New park irks priest Pastor of Holy Spirit Church questions why dirt mound was placed in front of his home BY ANDREW FLEMING REPORTER afleming@royalcityrecord.com

While the new all-wheel park in Queensborough has fast become a rolling success with local skateboaders, BMXers, mountain bikers and inline skaters, not everyone is a fan. Rev. David P. Hughes of the neighbouring Holy Spirit Church certainly isn’t. He’s upset that the view from his home is now blocked by a large mound of earth constructed to help bikers catch air. “I’m not opposed to it on principle, I just don’t understand that since they had 12,000 square feet to build it, they had to build a big hill right in front of my house,” said Hughes. “Anybody who walks “Anybody who into my house says, ‘What in God’s name walks into my have they done?’ I simply don’t want to house says, see people looking ‘What in God’s into my window every name have they time I look out. I have a five-and-a-half-foot done?’” hedge fence, and it’s four feet higher than REV. DAVID HUGHES that.” Queensborough resident He says the artificial mound, the highest point in the park, was built only a few feet from his Lawrence Street home’s property line. “I just cannot understand a designer designing something that big in front of someone’s house. … Having witnessed various groups of people standing on top of this mound of earth looking at my house and just laughing, I believe that this has been done deliberately, to provoke. Is this anti-Catholic? I can’t prove that, of course, but you can’t help but wonder.” Dean Gibson, the city’s director of parks, culture and recreation, said the location of the mound was chosen to avoid cutting down trees or being too near utility poles.

“The area in question is part of the dirt track Upset: Rev. David Hughes of Holy Spirit Church isn’t happy about the portion for bikers,” Gibson explained. “Because mound of dirt from the new all-wheel park next to his house in Queensthe whole facility was built from the ground up borough. – we couldn’t dig down to build it – there’s a certain amount of distance necessary in order for riders to get the speed they need to get air on their bikes, and this particular area was chosen because it was at a gap in a row of trees and utility poles.” Gibson said that every effort was made to get feedback and input from local residents well before construction began on the park, part of a larger $5-million redevelopment project for Queensborough’s parks being led by Richard Findlay Landscape Architect Ltd. “(Hughes) only became aware of what we were doing when we hand-delivered letters to residents who had properties that bordered around the park itself, which was a standard courtesy letter to let residents know construction of the all-wheel park would be starting up in the next few days and that we’ll be making every effort to comply with noise bylaws,” said Gibson. “Unfortunately, that was the first that he

Hope is a good thing at Glenbrook City students have not forgotten the children of Haiti one year after the devastating earthquake BY ALFIE LAU REPORTER alau@royalcityrecord.com

Spreading the message of hope to the people of Haiti is what a group of students at Glenbrook Middle School hope to achieve on Tuesday, Feb. 1. Students in the school’s Free the Children club are hoping to assemble on a field at Terry Hughes Park and form the word “espwa,” which is the Creole word for hope. The students will be wearing red, green and yellow, the colours of the Haitian flag, and the students will learn more about Haitian culture on that day. The awareness campaign is all part of the school’s ongoing participation in We Day, the Free the Children event held each October in downtown Vancouver. Last year’s event saw such keynote speakers as Al Gore and the Rev. Jesse Jackson speak. Melissa Leong, a Grade 6 student at Glenbrook, attended last year’s We Day event and wants to make a difference this year. “I was very inspired when I attended We Day,” said Melissa. “Hearing Al Gore talk was pretty cool, and it was really cool to hear the other speakers tell us about their experiences.” As part of the school’s Free the Children club, Melissa said the group puts together a project each month, and January’s project focused on the people of Haiti, who are still recovering from a devastating earthquake last year. “We were thinking of all the children in Haiti who still need help and we wanted to do something,” said Melissa. “We are asking our classmates to take a stand in ensuring that the needs in Haiti are not forgotten.” The students will have their picture taken, and they hope to send it off to Haiti

Message of hope: Students at Glenbrook Middle School want to raise awareness about victims of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti by spelling out the Creole word for hope. Elizabeth Kerschbaumer, Melissa Leong and Caroline Olsen, seen here with sponsor teacher, Mounir Korsh, are participating in the effort, with some students painting their hands in support. to give hope to the survivors of the January 2010 quake. Melissa said fundraising is not part of the awareness campaign because most of the money doesn’t get to the actual people the group hopes to help. “We want to raise awareness, to make sure these people aren’t forgotten,” she said. Shirley Schweers is a part-time counsellor at Glenbrook and the leader of our Free the Children group. “We took the theme of Remember Haiti, and the kids came up with this idea,” said Schweers. “We need to spread the word that Haiti still needs help and they should

not give up hope.” Schweers said the school has been involved with We Day and Free the Children for almost three years, and the kids are looking forward to this October’s We Day. “The kids learn so much, and it’s great to see them get involved,” said Schweers. Free the Children is the world’s largest network of children helping children through education, with more than one million youth involved in education and development programs in 45 countries. The organization has inspired children to help and give a change for other children all over the world. For more info, go to www. freethechildren.com.

No price tag on city’s part of new arts centre Task force to look at needs of new performing arts centre BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

The City of New Westminster can’t put a price tag on its contribution to the Massey Performing Arts Centre just yet. Last summer, the city and the school district reached an agreement on Massey

Theatre, with the school district agreeing to provide a 650-seat theatre in the new high school and the city pledging to provide additional funding to expand it to create a performing arts centre. “We have made a commitment to contribute to the replacement of Massey Theatre,” said Blair Fryer, the city’s manager of communications. “That is for enhancements over the 650-seat theatre.” The provincial Neighbourhoods of Learning initiative allows schools to

include an additional 15 per cent in space for community services. The ministry of education has agreed to fund a 650-seat theatre as part of the school replacements. In addition to funding additional seats beyond what’s required for a school theater, the enhancements to be funded by the city will help elevate the theatre to the standard needed to serve as a regional performing arts theatre. Fryer said the exact number of seats to be included in the performing arts centre

hasn’t been determined, which is one of the items that would be considered by the new Massey Theatre Performing Arts Centre advisory task force. The task force will provide input on the design and technical performance specifications, and review and make recommendations for the final design concept. Its role is to represent the arts sector regarding the programming, design and technical ◗Arts Page 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Preserve our local schools ◗ continued from page 6

to overcrowding at Richard McBride Elementary. McBride is currently over official capacity. The addition of students from Hume Park, as well as school-aged children from the soon-to-be-developed Brewery District, will compound the problem. While the district’s plan to alleviate this pressure is to change the catchment of Victoria Hill students from McBride to the St. Mary’s school site, many parents may still decide to enrol their children in McBride’s Montessori program. Are we better off shutting down a small school to create overcrowding in another? The school board needs to accept responsibility for the declining enrolment levels and develop a plan to increase enrolment. Several points need to be considered. ◗ The placing of a moratorium on the inclusion of Hume Park’s closure as a school board agenda item. This will restore confidence in the parents of the neighbourhood and reduce the pressure to enrol their children out of catchment. ◗ An evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of locating a program of choice at Hume. Options could be an expansion of existing programs or new programs such as bilingualism, late immersion Montessori. An analysis of the impact of full-day kindergarten should be included. ◗ The provision of a thorough assessment of potential demographic pressures, including the impact of the Brewery District development on enrolment in the region and the possibility of future early learning programs for three- to four-year-olds. A proactive rather than reactive approach is needed in determining the future of Hume Park. This is particularly relevant since the creation of new schools and new catchment areas is currently underway in our district. The strengths of our neighbourhood schools need to be promoted, and these schools need to be protected. David Phelan, New Westminster

‘Vendetta’ will hurt B.C.

Dear Editor:

Something that not too many people know about is the most recent vendetta

of the Campbell Liberal government to kill and bury the Therapeutics Initiative, a public agency based at the University of British Columbia. This publicly funded $1 million-a-year facility saves the taxpayers $50 million annually in drug costs. Just one example is that of Vioxx, which was kept off the shelves in B.C. when the agency discovered a link to increased heart attacks. Further to this, its researchers have been credited with saving 500 lives by issuing timely warnings about such suspected medications. Regarding concerns about drug company clinical trials and safety, the Health Council of Canada, an independent national agency, in early December 2010, released a report emphasizing the limitation of pre-marketing testing and after-marketing surveillance even after drugs have been approved by Health Canada. Such problems with drugs are serious, placing Canadians’ health and lives at risk. So why would anyone want to shut down an agency that has proven its value over and over again, and enjoys international acclaim? The walls of the Therapeutics Initiative are full of letters of support from around the world. According to a Victoria Times Colonist editorial, a leading medical journal has referred to it as “the only source of critical assessment that is not political or partisan.” But, as inferred in the editorial, no good deed goes unpunished when the profits of the drug companies are involved. The Ministry of Health, to satisfy the drug industry, has put the boots to this public agency by terminating its funding and banning staff from future involvement. The Liberal government has set up a new assessment process with drug industry involvement and extensive influence – in a manner of speaking, putting the fox in charge of the chicken coop. The experts who ran Canada’s most successful review program are not wanted in B.C. However, interest in their employment and expertise has been expressed in Ottawa and Great Britain. They won’t be short of work. This despicable decision is but one more example of betrayal by this government of the people of this province in privatizing, selling off, giving away or otherwise destroying anything that is publicly owned. Tunisia: Will anything really change? ◗ continued from page 6

know I couldn’t have found it on an unmarked map. It wasn’t even a trendy oppressed place, like Chiapas or Tibet. No movie-star glamour for its plight. The question in Tunisia lately has been whether the revolt would have come to fruition without the images of Mohammed Bouazizi burning. It’s about whether media can cause people to act. In many ways, it’s the

flip side of the question, was the shooting in Tucson sparked by the media? But the truth about media, even social media, is that for most people, it remains entertainment, style, personal expression. That is to say, it is utterly meaningless. Changing your Twitter image to green did not free the Iranian people. No amount of editorializing by the western press will affect the outcome of the Tunisian

revolution. Facebook is not going to help send the Dalai Lama back home to Tibet. From the pundits to the politicians to the bloggers, without action, our support for change in Tunisia is so much empty air, flashing pixels forming meaningless constellations that affect nothing. Are you the biggest loser in the city? New Westminster residents are being challenged to lose weight – and win

BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

Royal City residents are getting a chance to be winners – by becoming losers. Having completed a successful corporate challenge for city employees in December 2010, the City of New Westminster is launching a Biggest Loser challenge for the community. Over the course of 12 weeks, 82 city employees lost 692 pounds. “We were completely taken aback,” said Sandy Earle, the city’s active communities programmer. “We were looking for 12 or 15 people to sign on. It snowballed.” The Biggest Loser city staff challenge started in September and ended the week before Christmas. One employee lost more than 40 pounds and many others shed some unwanted weight. “It is a lot of weight,” Earle said about the 692 pounds shed by city employees. “This is amazing for a 12-week period. One woman lost close to 35 pounds. She started

crying. She said, ‘I want you to know my doctor took me completely off my blood pressure medication.’” In fact, three employees reported that their blood pressure had dropped significantly over the course of the challenge. A key component to the program, said Earle, was the weight check-ins that took place every two weeks. “People were left to their own to do this,” she said. “Some used Weight Watchers. Some used calorie counters. Some people reported to me it was portion control. For a few others, they said, ‘I didn’t change my eating, I changed my activity.’” Based on the success of that corporate challenge, the city is launching a community challenge that will run from Feb. 7 to May 2. Earle is hoping that TV programs like The Biggest Loser and Village on a Diet will help get people interested. “We are really excited about it,” Earle said. “When you do something with the community, you never know if it is going to have 10 people or 300 people. We would really like to see it take off in the community.” Weigh-ins will be held every two weeks on various days and times at the

Chinese New Year a fixture in city’s history OUR PAST

ARCHIE & DALE MILLER

here are many historical accounts of celebrations surrounding the most important social event of the year for the Chinese people in New Westminster – Chinese New Year. These stories were often reported in the local press, sometimes with uncomplimentary statements about the events and the people.

Casey Dylan Preston

Usually, however, they noted the many festive features of the celebrations and described the broad extent of the many activities that all mixed together as the Chinese people welcomed their new year. Within our own personal family history are many stories of working closely with the Chinese, the First Nations and the Japanese within the fishing industry, especially the processing of salmon and herring products. Those who worked in this industry seemed to always share with other races and nationalities as they honoured their own customs and special days.

remembered that individual firecrackers were often very small, meant not to be separated but to be fired off as entire “strings” of explosions to create a maximum of noise to scare off evil spirits. These reminiscences emphasize that the Chinese were very interested in sharing their New Year customs and always encouraged other citizens to visit during this time of year. Our family stories are from the late 1800s and continue through to the 1980s, but they relate closely to the early Chinese New Year’s accounts from this city. Early city celebrations featured decorations of

In our family stories are tales of the feasting, fun and fireworks that were part of Chinese New Year festivities. These occurred in such venues as Chinatown in New Westminster, fishing plants and company towns on the coast, and Vancouver’s Chinatown. There are special memories of being given treats of candied fruit and other confections, often very different from those usually eaten but very good. Some members of the family remembered the excitement of being given fireworks to have fun with at a different time of year than Halloween. They also

flowers, lanterns and good luck sayings written on pieces of red paper. There were always fireworks, music, lots of smoke and noise. Visitors were warmly welcomed and entertained with an array of items including Chinese wine, tea, cakes, fruit, nuts, preserved ginger, candied delicacies, a feast that featured pork and chicken, and perhaps even more libations and a cigar. In the early city, while Chinatown may have seemed to some a strange and curious place, many citizens did venture in and thoroughly enjoyed themselves and indulged in some of the seemingly exot-

ic aspects of this colourful part of town. A final personal family memory is of the preserved candied ginger. For our Chinese friends – Happy New Year and good luck for the Year of the Rabbit.

Roadshow is in New Westminster Starting January 31st!

By: Terry Inkler

After a very successful show in Port Coquitlam and Delta, The Roadshow is now here in New Westminster, BC. So you had better search through your attics and garages, go through your lock boxes and jewellery, because you may be sitting on a small fortune and not even know it! Roadshow experts are here to examine all your antiques, collectibles, gold and silver.

wear anyways. Expert Elijah Gold explains, “We have noticed a substantial increase in the amount of precious metals such as gold and silver coming to the Roadshow, which makes sense considering how high it’s currently trading at. He added, “The Roadshow is great because it puts money in people’s pockets, especially during such hard times. Lots of items that are just sitting around collecting dust in basements and jewellery boxes can be exchanged for money, on the spot!”

During a show near Toronto, a woman came in with a jewellery box that she had just inherited from her late aunt. “I don’t wear jewellery,” explained Barbara Engles, “so it was an easy decision to come down to the Roadshow to sell it”. She was very excited when she was able to walk away with a cheque for over $2,100 for jewellery she was never going to

At another Roadshow event, a woman, named Mira Kovalchek, walked in with a tin full of hundreds of old coins that were given to her as a young child by her grandfather. She finally decided to come in to the Roadshow and see what he had given her. She was ecstatic to learn she had coins dating back to the late 1800’s, some of which were extremely rare. Roadshow consultant Perry Bruce

explains “We had uncovered an 1871 Queen Victoria 50 Cent piece, valued at over $2,000!! She had a nice assortment of coins that were not rare dates, but she was able to sell them for their silver content”. She explains, “I never would have thought that my old tin of coins was worth so much! I can finally afford to renovate my kitchen”. Perry Bruce

continued, “Canadian coins prior to 1967, and American coins prior to 1964 are all made with silver, and we have noticed a large increase of customers coming to the Roadshow with coins and cashing them in for their silver value”.

Experts at the Roadshow will evaluate and examine your items, FREE OF CHARGE, as well as educate you on them. The Roadshow sees hundreds of people during a one week event, and they have been travelling across Canada to different cities and towns, searching for your forgotten treasures. Trains, dolls, toys, old advertising signs, pocket watches, porcelain and bisque dolls, pretty much everything can be sold at the Roadshow. Any early edition Barbie’s are sought after by the Roadshow collectors, as well as a variety of Dinky Toys and Matchbox cars. Lionel Trains and a variety of tin toys can also fetch a

price, especially if they are in their original box or in mint condition. If a collector is looking for one of your collectibles, they often make offers to buy them.

A man brought in a 1950’s Marx Tin Toy Robot, in fairly good condition, still in its original box. We were able to locate a collector for that specific toy within minutes, and that gentleman went home with over $700 for his Toy Robot and a few other small toys. So whether you have an old toy car, a broken gold chain, or a Barbie sitting in the closet, bring it down to the Roadshow, we will take a look at it for FREE and it could put money in your pocket!

See you at the Roadshow!

Amazing rise of a skate champion BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

There was no bigger winner at last week’s Canadian figure skating championships than Burnaby’s Nam Nguyen. The Grade 7 Brentwood Park Elementary School student rocked the junior men’s division, winning his fifth national title in five years at the Skate Canada competition in Victoria last week. Nguyen, who stands just 4-9, won the junior men’s title on his second try – he was a bronze medallist last season. He garnered a huge junior score of 169.89 points, a respectable score for more than half of the competing senior male skaters at the nationals. In fact, Nguyen’s 114.67 score in the free skate would have placed him eighth amongst the competing seniors. When he was presented with his gold medal, Nguyen was dwarfed on the podium by his much older

Bruins win bronze at St. Albert tourney The Burnaby Winter Club Bruins were the consolation winners at the John Reid Memorial AAA bantam hockey tournament in St. Albert, Alta. The only loss for the Bruins was a 4-0 defeat to rival Kamloops Jardine Blazers in the tournament semifinal on Saturday. The Bruins defeated the Blazers 4-3 in a marathon

shootout in the final of the Burnaby Minor Christmas tournament earlier this month. Burnaby’s two goalies Nicholas McBride and Maniel Rana posted the top stats in the tourney. McBride led the way with a 0.956 save percentage and a one-goal-pergame average. Rana had a 0.931 save percentage,

while allowing 1.34 goals per game. Chris Seto led all scorers with 10 goals and 15 total points. Matthew Barzal was fifth overall with eight goals, including a tourney-best two gamewinning tallies, and four assists. Cameron Seto also finished in double-digit points, with 10, including four goals.

Burnaby defeated the SSAC Southgate Lions 31 with a three-goal opening period in the bronzemedal game on Sunday. Barzal, with the gamewinner, and Chris Seto both had a goal and one assist for the Bruins. Viktor Dombrovskiy also scored. In the crossover matchup, Burnaby doubled the Airdrie Xtreme 4-2.

Kevin Crowley was selected the first overall pick of the 2011 Major League field lacrosse collegiate draft last Saturday. Crowley, one of four seniors from Stony Brook University taken in the draft, was made the No. 1 selection by the Hamilton Nationals on Jan. 21. New Westminster colleague, Jordan McBride, was taken in the third round, 14th overall by the Rochester Rattlers. Crowley, a preseason first-team AllAmerican and player of the year by Lacrosse Magazine, is coming off one of the best seasons ever by a Stony Brook lacrosse player. “I am very excited and honoured to be selected by Hamilton, especially because I played with many of the players on their team this past summer with Team Canada,” Crowley said. Last year, Crowley was named the Enners Award winner as the nation’s top Division I men’s lacrosse player. He was also a Tewaaraton Award finalist. Crowley earned America East player of the year honours following a single-season

record 51 goals. The Stony Brook midfielder also led the NCAA Div. I, averaging more than 4.5 points per game. Crowley is also the only player in school history in the top five in both goals, 101, and assists, 75. He is just 26 points shy of the school’s all-time record of 201 career points. McBride, an honourable mention AllAmerican in his first two seasons, had a career-best 48 goals as a junior attack last year. McBride is Stony Brook’s all-time leading goal scorer and is the only player in school history to score 40 goals or more in three consecutive seasons. “Our Stony Brook team this year has big expectations for ourselves,” Crowley added. “All six starters on the offence are returning. We lost some impact players on the D end, but since the success our team had over this past season, we have brought in some good freshmen and transfers to fill those spots.” New Westminster Salmonbellie junior grad Jay Card, a senior attack at Hofstra University, went 11th overall to Long Island.

CAREER COACH

NEW WESTMINSTER

According to Richard deCharms, a researcher in the field of motivation, the primary human motivation is to be effective in producing changes in one's environment. I find this to be true. Most of the clients I meet with who feel they have no control Gregg Taylor over their circumstances, are also the ones who feel the most anger, anxiety or hopelessness. It’s important for us to feel that we have some command over our lives and our actions, to feel powerful rather than powerless. Unfortunately, we don’t always feel in command especially in times of change. There are four different ways that people respond to change: 1. Inactive: withdraw from change, hide, and do nothing 2. Reactive: react to changes that confront us, but there is little or no planning, vision, or choice involved – we didn’t see it coming 3. Proactive: involves being aware and choosing our response to change as we evaluate and research our options and make informed choices 4. Self-directed initiator: involves not only effectively managing change but also embracing and initiating change; viewing change as an opportunity for personal development and an opportunity to influence and actively shape the course of our lives These are our choices. We can avoid or react to change or we can manage it constructively. When our choice is to learn to manage change effectively we can become self-directed initiators of change. This enables us to take charge of our lives as much as we can, living in more productive and personally meaningful ways. If you have changes happening in your job or career, become a selfdirected initiator and start planning for your future. Call my office at 604-434-1177 for info. For help finding the work you love, call Transitions Career & Business Consultants, coordinators of The Transitions Program, a free 3 week career exploration program available to all unemployed people at 604-434-1177 or 604-681-2774.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Sunday/Monday highlight the problem (2010-2012) in a crucial relationship. You see another in terms of security, but they might see you as “fighting” their ambition. You’ll see clues to solving it Saturday. The solution has something to do with understanding, affection, and with secrets/ research, finances, sexual yearnings, commitment, intuition and dreams. Those secrets, finances, sexuality, et al, are emphasized midweek – they’re a source of ambition, success. If you can’t solve the relationship problem, you might “thoroughly” end the bond, now or later. Decide what’s best. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Chores and health issues arise Sunday/Monday – with problems attached. Solutions to these problems occur Friday/Saturday – the answer might lie deeper, in diagnosis, even surgery. (Metaphorically, too – i.e., cutting out a wasteful or “work-causing” situation.) Relationships confront you mid-week: exciting meetings, challenges and opportunities. You could meet your match in love! That’s important now, as January to June luckily support weddings, love (and far travel, legal solutions, publishing and intellectual pursuits). Depths, secrets, intimacy and funding go well Friday/ Saturday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Romance could hit a snag Sunday/Monday – it probably involves money or possessions – or difficulty “possessing” someone. For you, now to late 2012, romance and sensuality are firmly fused – study whether this will be a problem or a blessing. Creativity and speculation could face the same two-year snag, so be cautious with risk. Chores and health – the main themes of these few weeks – become important midweek. A new work project could begin. Work and health are tied strongly – and mostly beneficially – to finances, investments, research and sex. These four are lucky now to June.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: You have to recognize a basic truth: between now and October 2012, all your efforts to advance in the world (via career, marriage, business, carving out the land, etc.) will be either helped or opposed by another (or others). You will have to form a partnership of interests – your ambition, their security. Be warned: this/these others are hard-headed, skeptical, want proof, not sweet persuasion. So, give proof – of your loyalty, reliability, skills. Sunday/Monday point this out. If you meet a barrier, re-read this. By Saturday, the “right path” appears. Social joys midweek! Taurus April 20-May 20: Love, law, learning and travel – all are a little rocky Sunday/Monday. Be patient – solutions arrive in a small way Monday eve through Tuesday morning, and in a big way Friday/ Saturday. What does the solution look like? Ambition and hard work. Higher-ups, bosses and parents, judges and VIPs are impatient and temperamental to late February, so tread lightly, show good humour, don’t be querulous (especially Friday morning!). Your ambitions can be very successful this week, especially Tuesday eve onward, if you’re eager. Good friends, flirts and social delights arrive late week! Gemini May 21-June 20: Take care with investments, debt, sexual urges, deep health, surgery, commitments and “secrets” Sunday/Monday. If you must handle something in these zones, do so Monday eve through Tuesday morning. Avoid a legal fight all month; but if you’re in one, it intensifies mid-January to late February. Despite the trauma, litigation might solve a problem and make a wish come true! Stability, hope and anger are your allies. The same period might bring gentle love with a hotheaded, idealistic person – intimacy moves toward destiny. Tuesday to Friday emphasizes these themes. Grab opportunities.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: I’ve mentioned several times over recent years, and will this whole decade, that domestic, property and security changes loom. These are emphasized this year and next, and might, during this time, present a) a puzzle to you, or b) a deeply experienced opportunity. This Sunday/Monday holds a problem or critical choice here – one that moves smoothly forward Tuesday, and meets a solution late week. (The solution involves work or health.) Now to June, relocation, new partnerships are lucky. Romance, creativity and risk lure you midweek, and could be the doorway to new partnership! Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: You will generally say what you mean Sunday eve – but this day and Monday can raise a barrier to communication that has been around for a year and will last to late next year. It could simply be that communications become burdensome (e.g., more emails – or IT glitches at your job) or, that gossip is a problem factor. You can set up or initiate a long-lasting communications solution Friday/Saturday, one that enhances both your career and security. Home, family, property concerns – February’s main focus – flow well late Tuesday to Thursday. Romance, pleasure, beauty late week! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Both a money opening/opportunity and a money barrier arise Sunday/Monday. This “duo” exist now into October 2012 (and have, for awhile). During the entire phase, take care with expenses, spending, investing. The problem factor seems to involve wishes, or popularity or enjoyment – too much of these for your bank account, maybe? Mild money luck enters Thursday, for a month, and a solution to past and present money dilemmas is available late week. Casual friends, siblings, communications, errands, paperwork, curiosity fill midweek. They “are” the money solution, here forward.

Jan. 30 - Feb. 5 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness rise strongly Sunday to Tuesday midday – get out, ask favours, start important projects. If your project is monetary (or sensual) continue it through Thursday, as many “good starts” are available! Even Friday/Saturday continue to help – especially with money attached to career, property, and/or personal skills. Mid-January through February brings: a) the end of a money source, and/or b) the seeding of a new one, or c) money connected to property. Much can flow to you – don’t let it flow past/ away – save! Friends, errands, late week. Aquarius Jan.20-Feb.18: Rest, lie low, contemplate Sunday to Tuesday afternoon. You might spy a problem with communications, travel, intellectual, cultural or legal affairs Sunday/Monday. Keep the faith, because the rest of this week, especially Wednesday and Saturday, could brew the solution. (The solution lies in your own personality, your willingness to step forward and say, “This is me! And this is what I can do!” And that tendency, self-promotion, is highest and most successful this midweek, Tuesday-Thursday, and this month, February.) Chase money or spend (used items great) Friday/Saturday. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Your optimism and social desires rise Sunday to Tuesday afternoon. But you’re in an overall “recuperation mode” until Feb. 18, so don’t expect a lot. Be contemplative, restful, and gently private all week – especially Tuesday to Thursday, when weariness increases. (Great government, spiritual and health links midweek also.) You might notice a long-term problem (to October 2012) Monday, involving intimacy, sexuality, commitment, or focusing on your net worth, investments, debt. These dilemmas approach solutions Wednesday night and Saturday – or at least, show you how to “be safe.” timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
