The next stage in the United Steelworkers’ private prosecution of Weyerhaeuser will play out in a New Westminster courtroom on Monday, March 28. On Thursday, Weyerhaeuser was summoned to appear before a provincial court judge in the steelworkers’ union’s private prosecution for the 2004 death of Lyle Hewer. Arguing for the union is prominent lawyer Glen Orris, while Weyerhaeuser has retained criminal lawyer Len Doust of McCarthy Tetrault to defend its interests. Judge Therese Alexander had issued process on March 2 in the private criminal prosecution case. The union alleges Weyerhaeuser was criminally negligent in Hewer’s death at the company’s now-closed Queensborough sawmill. “We expect that our union will either proceed on its own in the role of a private prosecutor or that the Crown counsel may step in to prosecute the criminal case,” says steelworkers’ union Western Canada director Stephen Hunt. “The testimony and evidence presented at those hearings convinced the judge that this case has merit that warrants a summons to be issued,” says Hunt. “In our view, it would be an injustice if the Crown were to step in and stay the charges at this point in time.” Hunt, reached in Winnipeg on Friday morning, added that the union is proceeding because it wants to ensure that what happened to Hewer never happens to another worker again. ◗Court Page 8

Carol Cheremkora and Sue Sayer may never have had the chance to be New Westminster’s May Queen, but they will forever be connected to the longstanding tradition. For the past nine years, Cheremkora has made the crown for the May Queen. Having capped off her crown-making career for the Royal City’s 140th May Queen in 2010, she’s now crowning Sue Sayer as her successor. “It’s been an honour for me to do the crowns,” Cheremkora said. “I wanted mine to end on a big one – the 140th.” New Westminster celebrated the 140th anniversary of the May Queen in 2010; a celebration that also occurred in the same year the Olympics came to Vancouver. New Westminster has the longest running May Day celebration in the British Commonwealth. “I have really enjoyed it. It’s been part of my life, May Day, all my life,” Cheremkora said. “You want to pass it on to someone who is going to enjoy it and love it as much as you do.” Sayer is excited about taking on the role as the May Queen crown maker in the Royal City and channeling her creative flair into something that’s so connected to the city’s heritage. “I am so glad we make them,” said Sayer, adding the city could easily order a crown online. “It’s a contribution from the community to do that. It’s a tradition we are carrying on.” Both women are thrilled to be part of the city’s May Day history, although neither got a chance to be May Queen. Brigette Mayer is grateful for the support she’s getting from the City of New Westminster to get healthier. The City of New Westminster launched its Biggest Loser challenge, also known as the Healthy Weight Loss Challenge, on Feb. 7. The 12-week program is intended to help residents be healthier by losing weight, eating healthier and exercising more. “I think it’s awesome, I think they are doing a great job promoting it, helping us along,” Mayer said. “We get that instant feedback every two weeks at weigh-in.” In addition to the weigh-ins, all participants received an information package about the Canada Food Guide and portion size. “They send out e-mails. They have got little mini challenges,” Mayer said. “The first one was getting out walking 30 minutes a day. That was
easy because we just got a dog.” Subsequent mini challenges focused on eating six servings of fruits and vegetables a day, and eating breakfast. Mayer, who was attending Weight Watchers meetings, thought the Biggest Loser challenge would provide a bit of an extra incentive to losing a few pounds. “Pretty well so far,” she said of her progress. “We had our first weigh-in – I was down five pounds in two weeks. I was pleased with that.” Mayer hasn’t set a specific weight loss goal but is using the challenge to help motivate her to exercise more and get healthier. “I’ve been watching my portion sizes and tying to eat more frequently, every three to four hours. They say it’s a good to keep your blood sugar levels up,” she said. “It’s really to help me focus on what I am eating, knowing that my next meal is not going to be six or seven hours away.” Mayer is one of 260 people who are participat-
ing in the Biggest Loser Challenge, which will conclude May 2. As of the most recent weigh-in, participants had lost 671.2 pounds. On March 6, the City of New Westminster held a Healthy Weight Loss rally that was attended by about 170 people. Trainers and participants in CBC’s Village on a Diet TV show also attended to provide some inspiration to participants of the local challenge. “It was really well attended. We were really, really pleased,” said Sandy Earle, the city’s active communities programmer. “They really enjoyed the event. They felt it was really motivating listening to these people talk. They spoke from the heart.” Earle would like to see New Westminster residents meet the goal set by Taylor, B.C. as part of its involvement in the Village on a Diet program. That community’s goal was to lose one ton. “That is completely doable for our group,” Earle said. “I think it would be awesome if New West could lose a ton.”

A New Westminster native and his young family survived the earthquake in Japan but are now on the move because of the risk of radiation from a nuclear power plant. New Westminster city councillor Bill Harper’s son Damion, daughter-in-law

Thousands of people have died, were injured or are missing after an 8.9 earthquake struck the northeast coast of Japan on March 11, triggering a tsunami and damage to some of the country’s nuclear power plants. “They have left Tokyo,” Harper told The Record Friday morning. “They are now in Kyoto. Probably today or tomorrow,
they go south. They are going to go to Hiroshima. They have friends there.” While the family is making plans day by day, Harper said it’s likely they will return to Canada. They had moved back to Japan from New Westminster when Risa was preparing to enter Grade 1. “Part of the problem is airline tickets have gone through the roof,” he said. “They have gone from $1,200 three or four days
ago to $6,000. They (airlines) are taking advantage of the situation.” Harper said some people are taking a ferry from Japan to South Korea, then taking a five-hour bus ride to Seoul and flying out of its airport. the nuclear power plant. “The people who are most susceptible to thyroid cancer are youngsters. That is the biggest disease that comes out of the radiation,” he said. “The other one is lymphoma. My son has already had lymphoma, not once, but twice. We are worried about him as well. We want to make sure he is completely out of any zone.” Harper said countries like France, Australia and China have taken steps to help their citizens leave Japan, but Canada’s federal government has done nothing other than to tell people to book a flight out of Japan. “They have been completely unrespon-
sive in the sense of trying to tell Canadians what the risk is, what they should do,” he said. “There are people there who can’t afford to pay the airfare.” Following the earthquakes, the Harper family had originally contemplated leaving Japan but decided to hang tight and monitor the situation. As the nuclear crisis worsened, the family decided to leave. An hour after the 8.9 earthquake struck the northeast coast of Japan on March 11, Harper was talking to his son via Skype, and he’s maintained regular contact since. “The technology is really good in Japan,” Harper said. “They took their laptops with them. We can Skype them any time they are awake.”

Sidewalks must be accessible

Re: Curbed in the city, The Record, March 12. My heart goes out to Basil Fitze and his predicament. As the saying goes, we are not free until all of us are free. Until the people of New Westminster insist that the sidewalks be accessible to all users, we do not deserve to be called good neighbours. The city passed a Pedestrian Charter in 2008. One of the actions called for by the charter was to ensure that all sidewalks in the city have accessible curb cuts. We are now in 2011, and our neighbours using wheelchairs and pushing baby strollers are being treated as second-class citizens. Talk to your councillor and the mayor about getting these curb cuts done this year. Also, a reminder to property owners to trim back hedges and overhanging trees and shrubs so that we can all use the full width of the sidewalks safely. Hope to see all

Union involvement a concern Dear Editor:
I find it interesting that David Black’s letter of March 16 (Where’s the real conflict here?, The Record, March 16) did not mention that he is a vicepresident of the COPE 378 union, the union which represents CUPE B.C. employees, including Lori Watt, whom he defends. That’s a fairly relevant piece of information considering the fact that Mr. Black holds an important position of trust and influence as an elected official in Ms. Watt’s union. I also find it puzzling that a COPE 378 vicepresident would be unaware of the extent and the purpose of CUPE’s country-wide campaign efforts against the bottled water industry. general public might easily be unaware of CUPE’s campaign efforts, but a public sector union leader would be very hardpressed not to know about these efforts. If by some strange chance Mr. Black is genuinely oblivious to CUPE’s extensive “public water” campaigning and perceived fears of competition from the private sector, then I would encourage him to visit CUPE’s website and become informed on the subject. There is ample information available there and elsewhere attesting to the extent of CUPE’s anti-bottled-water campaign efforts. These same anti-bottled-water and “public water” campaign efforts also place trustee Watt, as a CUPE employee, in a clear conflict of interest when she chooses to use her elected position on the New Westminster school board to pursue this agenda, an agenda which is in the obvious interest of her employer. Surely trustee Watt took the oath of office prescribed under Section 50 (1) of the School Act when she became a New Westminster school trustee? An oath that included a promise not to allow any private interest to influence her conduct in public matters. Patrick O’Connor, New Westminster
Conflict saga continues Dear Editor:
Re: Conflict issue is no joke, Letters to the editor, The Record, March 5. Mr. O’Connor did not read my letter very carefully when he states that I see conflict of interest as a joke and his efforts in that area a “whim” or “based on a flimsy pretext.” As I stated they are no longer a joke, and in fact I find them bullying, threatening, pompous, vindictive and an attempt to disenfranchise local voters and their elected trustee. Nevertheless, I took seriously his offer to examine his legal opinion on conflict of interest as offered by Blake, Cassels, etc. I was impressed not so much by the legal argument as by the sheer size and influence of this firm. They are truly multi-national and normally represent entities such as Suncor, Ford and Nestle. They may be the heaviest hitting corporate law firm in the country. They cannot be cheap, so I guess I’m additionally impressed when a private citizen hires them for an opinion of this nature and, I’m assuming here, uses them to launch a case in Supreme Court of British Columbia. I don’t know their fee structure, but a Law Society website states that a few hours of civil litigation can easily run up to thousands of dollars. So given that this decision is now resolved in O’Connor’s and Aquafina’s favour, at least in the short run, why continue to ride this rocking horse so furiously when it is such an expensive ride?
This whole legal crusade about a school board vote seems insanely overblown, like trying to run down a jaywalker with a tank. A further issue, and as a man who likes to preach from the high moral ground, Mr. O’Connor will agree with me, is that it is important that procedures appear to be above board, as well as that they really are. The difficulty here is that the American tentacle of this same firm offering the conflict of interest opinion in favour of the pro-bottle side, Blake, Cassels, etc. is also listed as Pepsi’s main corporate legal representative in 2009 (google Taking it Outside: Who represents America’s Biggest Companies). Unleashed dogs an issue
Dear Editor:
I just moved into New Westminster two years ago, and I soon fell in love with the beautiful Queen’s Park we have in our city. So I started exercising in the park every day, rain or shine. Every day, I jog around the park for two laps, and, while doing that, I also pay attention to what’s going on in the park. A few dog owners unleash their dogs outside the reserved area, where dogs can run freely on the grass field. I do not dislike dogs, and I do not have allergies to dogs; however, there are some children who are allergic to dogs. Moreover, letting the dogs run freely on the grass field can also put little toddlers in danger. Some dogs are huge and are hard to control when they see something fun. Perhaps squirrels and toddlers can be hurt by those dogs. Furthermore, I have also seen that some owners do not pick up after their dogs. Leaving behind dog’s excreta is a problem because it has lots of germs. However, it is also really unpleasant to see those excreta while walking in the beautiful park, and it also stinks! I can finally understand why my daughter is always so afraid to step on to the grass field, because she needs to watch very carefully so she won’t step on it. In addition, kids playing in the park do not always pay attention on what they are stepping on, but as a mother myself, I am very worried about kids getting dirty stuff all over their clothes and may be at risk of being sick. All in all, I hope that there can be a bigger reserved area for dogs to be unleashed because after all, dogs need exercise as much as we do. Also, the parks should be providing small plastic bag and paper towel for owners to pick up after their dogs, so everyone who visits the park can have a good time without concerns. “We’re continuing to go forward because if we are successful, this will serve as a deterrent for the future actions of employers who don’t put a premium on worker safety,” said Hunt. “We think Lyle died needlessly, and we want to send a message to employers that they have to take worker safety seriously.” Hunt said that even though more than six years have passed since Hewer’s death, the judge still found merit in Orris’ arguments. “I have to compliment the New Westminster police investigators for their thorough investigation and for our members, who still had to recollect what happened that day even though it was very difficult to relive that horrible incident.” The steelworkers are trying to find justice for Hewer, 55, who died on Nov. 17, 2004. Hewer was clearing the bottom of a large grinding machine called a hog. The hog converts wood waste to chips. The debris wedged above him came loose while he was working on it and smothered him. After Hewer’s death, Worksafe B.C. issued a report noting that mill managers determined that making the hog less dangerous, at a cost of $30,000, was too expensive. In 2007, Worksafe B.C. levied a fine of $297,000 against Weyerhaeuser Canada, citing the fact mill management ignored safety concerns and condoned a culture where “complacency in the face of danger became the norm.” While both Worksafe B.C. and New Westminster Police Service investigators recommended to Crown counsel that there was enough evidence for charges to be laid, Crown twice declined to move forward with the case in criminal court. But the steelworkers’ union still decided to move forward, announcing in March 2010 they were launching the private prosecution, a rarely seen legal manoeuvre that Orris admitted doesn’t happen very often because the courts want to safeguard against frivolous prosecutions. During three days of hearings in October and November 2010, 23 witnesses gave evidence before Alexander in New Westminster court. The steelworkers’ union’s case centres on a relatively new law that came into effect in 2004. The Westray amendments to the Criminal Code were inspired by the death of 26 Nova Scotia coal miners in 1992 and were designed to impose criminal penalties on corporations that fail to protect the health and safety of their employees. www.twitter.com/AlfieLau

Crowns: May Queen crown maker passes on tradition to new hands ◗ continued from page 1

Sayer remembers how her grandmother would dress her up to attend May Day in New Westminster. “Even though I grew up in Port Moody, it was a big deal,” said Sayer, whose father owned a business in New Westminster. “I was so jealous.” Cheremkora took over crown making duties in 2002, filling a role that that been filled by Natania Wardle from 1996 to 2001 and Heddy Herz from 1963 to 1995. Emma Peel had created the crowns for a number of years prior to 1963. Once the May Queen is selected, the crown maker has about three or four weeks to create the crown. It can take 35 to 40 hours to make the May Queen crown. “I finished the inside of the crown as much as the outside,” Cheremkora said. “It’s nice to have it finished. Everybody has their own way of doing it.” Making a May Queen crown is no simple feat. It’s a process that usually gets started the night the May Queen suite is selected, when measurements are taken of the May Queen’s head. “I would wait until the girl is chosen,” Cheremkora said. “I would see their demeanour and what they would look like. Sometimes I would go to their school and look at the May Queen photos of the past and see what they looked like.” Sometimes the design concept comes easily; other years it takes more time. “I have had a time when I couldn’t come up with a design until the week before,” Cheremkora recalled. “Then it would come to me. As soon as I knew what I wanted to do, it flew.” The crown-making process involves hours and hour of shaping a crown with metal and paper stem wire, covering it with white florist tape and using a hot glue gun to adorn the crown with flowers, beads or whatever decorative features are chosen. “She did an unbelievable

They are beautiful all round.” Cheremkora didn’t “have a clue” how to make a crown when she signed on for the job, but she’d done heirloom sewing and made hats for dolls at her former business, the 12th Street Doll Company. “You have your own style you put to it, your own legacy,” Cheremkora said. Most of Cheremkora’s crowns include fabric flowers and beads, but she added a bit of bling in the form of jewels for 2010. The crown also included rings in honour of the Olympics.
“The 140th had to have bling. It was the year of the Olympics,” she said. “Every year is different. I never did them the same.” In addition to the May Queen’s crown, the crown maker also has to make hairbands for girls in the May Queen Suite. “Those ones go together quite fast,” Cheremkora said. “I usually try to use some of the same flowers – it ties them together.” Cheremkora has passed on some helpful crownmaking hints to Sayer (don’t make them too tall or too heavy) but knows she’s leaving the tradition in good hands. “You have to have the passion, you have to have
that in order to be inspired to do it,” she said. “Sue has been part of the community. She knows the tradition – that is the important part.” When a friend informed the May Day committee that she knew of someone who may be willing to take on the volunteer position, another friend wasn’t about to let Sayer pass on the opportunity. “Are you crazy? Of course you want to do this,” her friend told her. “It ties you to the community. It’s a part of history.” Sayer feels privileged to be able to contribute to the city’s history by making crowns for the May Queen and knows its part of the May Queen’s big day.
“They are so excited,” Cheremkora said about the girls’ reactions to their
crowns. “The look on their faces – they know how much you have put into it.”

Creativity in bloom at studio New art studio offers hands-on art for kids and adults at River Market

Kimberly Chiem remembers a time when children’s lives weren’t programmed, when they were free to roam the neighbourhood, exploring and playing with their friends, discovering the world around them in their own individual ways. Today’s children have lost some of that freedom, she says – and, as a consequence, some of the creativity that used to be inherent in the very act of being a child. Chiem is doing her part to change that. In a bright, airy, high-ceilinged space on the second floor of River Market, Bloom Art Studio is reaching out to reconnect children – and adults, too – with the creative arts. Chiem opened the studio in February in a partnership with Pedagogy Toys, which just moved from its former Sapperton location to the Quay. Chiem met Pedagogy owner Karen Smecher in the fall, when she dropped in to the toy store. The two started talking, and, when Chiem mentioned her dream to open an art studio for kids, Smecher immediately suggested a partnership. At first, Chiem intended to take over a back room of the Sapperton shop. But, when the opportunity came up for Smecher to move to River Market, it seemed natural that Pedagogy could share the space with Bloom Art Studio. Now, a colourful modular wall separates the Pedagogy side from the studio side. “We love the vision here and the potential that’s here,” Chiem says with a smile. “We’re really wanting to be a part of it and to bring something to the community.” Chiem offers a varied schedule of classes for kids and adults, including a Creating Together class for preschoolers and their parents, as well as a number of programs for school-aged kids – hand sewing, book arts, expressive painting, mixed media, fibre arts and “crafterschool” among them. What’s most important to Chiem is not the finished works the participants end up with, but the process of creating them in the first place. “It’s really about the exploration, the joy of being in the moment and being mindful,” she says. “It’s all about the experience. It’s expressing yourself, it’s having what you’ve created witnessed. It’s validation, it’s self-esteem.” Chiem, who lives in New Westminster with her family, knows what of she speaks when it comes to the value of creativity in a person’s life. She grew up knitting and sewing from a young age, watching her mother – who in turn had learned from her mother and her grandmother. Chiem’s father was a draftsman, too, and his table full of inks and various pieces of equipment for creating lettering was a source of endless fascination for her. But, she says, she was never encouraged to consider the creative arts as a career. She took a communications degree at Simon Fraser University and went into marketing in an attempt to combine her creative side

Freemasons’ Lodge helps out Monarch Place AROUND TOWN

hen community members recently gathered to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Freemasons’ Lewis Lodge No. 57, they also helped out a worthy
cause. Lewis Lodge held a banquet on March 11 at the Westminster Club in recognition of its centennial anniversary. The event included a visit from the grand master of the Grand Lodge of B.C. and the Yukon, and a presentation about Freemasons by local historian Archie Miller. More than 100 people attended the event. A raffle of goods and services from local merchants raised $1,500 for Monarch Place,
a local transition house for women and children fleeing domestic violence.
Lasting legacy
The City of New Westminster’s 150th anniversary will leave a legacy for local students. The city has established a new bursary at Douglas College to help ease the cost of education for city residents and graduates of New Westminster Secondary School. The bursary, created to mark
the city’s 150th anniversary that was celebrated in 2009, will be awarded to New Westminster residents pursuing post-secondary studies at Douglas College. “We know that education is key to the health of a community,” said Hazel Postma, associate vicepresident, external relations, at Douglas College. “By choosing to support New Westminster residents, the city is demonstrating its commitment to
an educated populace.” “The city is proud of its long partnership with Douglas College,” said Mayor Wayne Wright. “We appreciate the benefits to residents and businesses that the college brings to the city.” In 2009 city council established the City of New Westminster 150th Anniversary Bursary with a pledge of $20,000. To date, $15,000 has been donated to the Douglas College Foundation, with
the remaining $5,000 scheduled for later this year. Douglas College President Scott McAlpine said the bursary demonstrates the close connections between the college and New Westminster that’s been developed over its 40 years in the city. The Residential Construction Performance Guide is the newest online resource available on the Homeowner Protection Office website at www.hpo.bc.ca. It explains how homes covered by home warranty insurance should perform. Every new home built for sale by a licensed residential builder in B.C. is protected by mandatory third-party home warranty insurance. It’s the strongest system of construction defect insurance in Canada. “For most consumers, buying a new home is one of the largest financial investments they will make. So it’s essential that homebuyers can make that investment with confidence, knowing that they will not be faced with additional expenses to repair defects after they move in,” said Tony Gioventu, executive director of the Condominium Home Owners’ Association and an advocate for consumer protection. This simple, practical guide is easy to use. It outlines more than 200 possible defects that are searchable online. This includes the most common defect claims that might be submitted under a home warranty insurance policy – from windows that malfunction, to driveway or interior concrete floors that have cracked, to siding that has buckled. Designed primarily for conventional low-rise, woodframe homes, the guide also provides some helpful guidelines for the common property of multi-unit buildings. Builders can also use the guide to help ensure that they deliver high performance homes.

Celebrating theatre

he New Westminster Public Library is celebrating the theatre in March. Sunday, March 27 is World Theatre Day, which was created in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute. Founded in 1948 by UNESCO, the institute “promotes the international exchange of knowledge and practice in theatre arts in order to consolidate peace and friendship between peoples.” In honour of the day, the library is hosting a special program From the Page to the Stage. It is presented by City Stage New West, who are dramatizing a new book by Ken McIntosh and Rod Drown, The New Westminster Frasers Baseball Club, about the young semi-pro baseball team that briefly launched New Westminster sports into international fame. Renee Bucciarelli and the authors of the book will conduct a lively discussion about
the process of transforming this wonderfully human and often hilarious story from a book into a play. Selections from both the book and the play-in-progress, Burning up the Infield: The 1974 Frasers, will be read, and audience feedback is encouraged. On Tuesday, March 29 at 7 p.m., the auditorium will come alive with the music of Cy Coleman. Applause Musical Society will introduce the life and work of the composer of this year’s performance by the Royal City Musical Theatre, The Will Rogers Follies. Coleman, a Songwriters Hall of Fame composer, has been a hit on Broadway since 1962, when his musical score for Wildcat launched the career of Lucille Ball. Nominated for 14 Tony Awards, he won three, and was the only composer to win consecutive Tonys for Best Score at the same time that the corresponding musicals won for Best Musical: for City of Angels and Will Rogers Follies. It’s surprising what lengths some high school teens will go for a moustache. The facial hair in question is that of New Westminster Hyacks head coach Ken Bowman, who coached the senior team to the gold medal at the B.C. high school field lacrosse tournament on March 11. The Hyack seniors defeated Charles Best Secondary 6-5 in the championship final at Best Turf in Coquitlam on Steven Ferdinandi’s last-minute, game-winning goal. “Our motivation was shaving our coach Ken Bowman’s moustache off,” said senior Hyacks goalie Rocky Bowman, no relation. “Definitely, when we come back from spring break, we’ll try to organize something for a fundraiser to a trip to the Denver Shootout.” The high-profile high school field lacrosse tournament will take place in June. The New West seniors won all four of their preliminary matches, including an earlier 11-7 win over Best in pool play. The Hyacks knocked off Claremont 2 in the Tier 1 semifinal 8-2. “We were all on the same page. We were passing pretty well,” said Rocky, who was named the MVP in the final game. “With five minutes left, we called timeout. We wanted to control the ball for the

Big stick defender Justin Goodwin was named the tournament MVP for the Hyacks. Jonathan Rachfall also
shone on the defence for the Hyacks. “I think the stereotypical quote is defence wins championships, and that’s what it come down to,” Rocky said. Quinn Mackay also had a strong season for the Hyacks, turning in multigoal games in all league games this year, Rocky added.
The New Westminster junior team came up short in its championship final, falling 16-6 to Claremont less than two hours after eking out a comeback win over Terry Fox. In the semifinals, the junior Hyacks trailed Fox 9-8 before finally outscoring the Port Coquitlam school 3-1 down the stretch.
The junior Hyacks were in tough in the 10-team division, but still topped their pool with a 4-0 record, including a 6-3 opening day win over pool runner-up Centennial. The Hyack juniors also edged Pitt Meadows 9-8, a team they hadn’t beaten all season, and Best 8-5 on the final day of roundrobin play on March 10.
Douglas College wrestler Daniel Swain won an individual title at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association championships. SwainpinnedMarylandBaltimore County opponent Daniel Carr to win the national title in the 149pound men’s weight class in Macon, Georgia March 12. The Burnaby resident and Douglas freshman wrestled in five matches, winning all but his semifinal bout by a fall. Swain finished this season with a spotless 10-0 record. “Daniel has a huge amount of confidence and wrestled like someone who expected to win,” said Douglas head coach Steve Rose in a college press release. “I think he has a great future. He also does mixed martial arts, and I think he’s got a bright future in both.” California Baptist University won the National Collegiate title, boasting two individual champions and a pair of runner-ups. The Burnaby Rebels can thank two of their Grade 11 players for putting them through to the final eight at the B.C. AAA high school boys’ basketball championships. Guard Manroop Clair and 6-3 forward Daniel Edwards combined for 48 points to help lead South to a come-from-behind 7872 win over Vancouver Island No. 2 Oak Bay Bays at the Langley Events Centre on Wednesday. Clair, the player of the game, led all scorers with 28 points, 11 of them coming in the turnaround final frame. Edwards added 20 points on eight-of-17 shooting, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots for the Rebels.
But the outcome was in doubt right up to the final seconds of the game. “We should have beaten them by about 20 (points),” said Clair after the game. “(Oak Bay) had more intensity than us from the get-go.” Oak Bay, behind 22-point efforts from guards Evan Woodson and Drake Downer, took repeated advantage of sloppy South defending to hold period leads into the fourth quarter. Fusion falls prey to Cougars The Vancouver Fusion lost a close quarter-final series to the Prince George Cougars in B.C. female midget AAA hockey playoffs last weekend. Prince George blanked the Fusion 1-0 in the final game of the best-of-three playoff series in an upset at the Port Moody rec centre last Sunday. In the opening game, New Westminster defender Sonia Sahota set up Fusion teammate Jessica Su in double overtime for the gamewinner in Vancouver’s 2-1 victory over the Cougars on March 11 at the Poirier Sports Centre. The Cougars came back to tie the series with a 2-1 win in Pitt Meadows on March 12. Prince George will take on league champion Thompson-Okanagan Rockets in the semifinals this weekend. New Westminster products Renee Lemieux and goalie Justina Mayr and the Fraser Valley Phantom will host the Kootenay Wildcats at Pitt Meadows Twin Arenas in the other best-of-three semifinal, running March 18 to 20.

Canadians female defender to UK The Burnaby Girls Canadians soccer club have lost the services of defender Kylla Sjoman to the new FA women’s Super League. Sjoman, who has dual Canadian/ Finish nationality, recently signed with the Doncaster Rovers Belles of the United Kingdom’s new super league. The versatile left-footer is a past Canadian national youth team player
from under-15 to -18, before earning an athletic scholarship at Arizona State University. At Arizona State, Sjoman captained the Sun Devils, where she was recognized by Soccer Buzz as a top-25 international recruit in 2005. The Burnaby Central grad also had a standout youth career with the Burnaby Girls Jazz Metro soccer team.

The Simon Fraser University will be hoping to be the not-too-congenial host when the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League playoffs faceoff in Burnaby next week. The defending B.C. champion Clan club team has won two of the last three championship titles, but a third is no sure thing, said SFU head coach Mark Coletta. “Both Okanagan College and Thompson Rivers University are definitely quality hockey teams and well coached,” said Coletta. TRU finished in first place in the regular season, edging SFU by a single point, with a 19-4-1 record. The Clan defeated
Thompson Rivers 2-1 in last year’s gold-medal final, after squeaking by Okanagan 3-2 in a shootout in the semifinals. SFU defeated the University of the Fraser Valley 3-0 in the 2008 final. The following season they were upset in the final 3-1 by the University of Victoria after winning the league title with a 15-1-0 record. SFU is scheduled to meet Okanagan in its opening playoff game at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The BCIHL playoffs will open with UVic against fifth-place Trinity Western University at the earlier time of 4:30 p.m. “It’s a good league, and anytime you can combine the school nature of it, it resonates with the players
and their families,” said Coletta, a St. Thomas More Collegiate grad and former Burnaby junior A hockey player, who won an NCAA Division III national title at Plattsburgh State in New York. SFU is led by last year’s MVP Paul Moscone, who finished second on the team in scoring. Jamie Laprise led the Clan with 14 goals and 35 points. “We play a pretty inyour-face style of hockey,” Coletta added. “We’re not about to trap. I give a lot of room for offensive creativity as long as they take care of our back end.” The playoffs continue through until Saturday, March 27. The B.C. final is scheduled for the Copeland centre at 6:30 p.m.
Clan lose close one at Mercer Simon Fraser University gave No. 3ranked Colorado State a scare before falling 13-11 at Mercer Stadium on Sunday. In a rematch of last season’s Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association quarterfinal, freshman attack Cory Koesdibyo scored a career-high seven points, including four goals, to lead the Clan club team. SFU trailed 4-1 after the opening quarter, but outscored Colorado State 10-9 the rest of the way, despite a run of 6-1 between the second and third periods.
Colton Dow tallied a hat trick for the Clan, while midfielder Eric Ransom and attack Calvin Craig both potted a pair of goals in multi-point performances. “We really felt that we were close to pulling out a win tonight, but we couldn’t be prouder of the effort,” said SFU co-head coach Jeff Cathrea in a club press release. “Colorado State is a top-5 team in the MCLA and to be in the game right down to the final whistle shows how hard the guys have continued to work.”

In my view, the resume is a targeted self marketing tool that highlights your key skills, abilities and experiences that relate to a particular company or position. Just like a product or Gregg Taylor service brochure, it needs to catch the attention of the reader right away and make it easy for them to find the pertinent information they’re seeking. This means having a Highlights of Qualifications and Skills section at the top of your resume, summarising your skills, training, and experiences that are most relevant to the employer. No matter how well you design your new resume, however, the resume has only a limited role in the job search process. The resume: 1) Won’t get you the job - at best it may get you an interview. 2) Won’t get the employer to pick up the phone - it provides reference material for the employer to review, but doesn’t mean they’ll call you. 3) Won’t walk down the hall and get itself on the appropriate person’s desk - the resume doesn’t take the place of proper phone and email follow-up and contact making. 4) Won’t get the employer to skip the interview process – you’ll eventually have to present yourself professionally in person.
