◗ ACCIDENT
Teen hit by car BY ALFIE LAU REPORTER alau@royalcityrecord.com
A 17-year-old Burnaby girl learned late Friday night that pedestrians can never win in accidents with moving cars. At around 11 p.m. on Friday, the girl was leaving a party with some friends on the Burnaby side of 10th Avenue near Sixth Street when she saw a friend across the street in New Westminster. “When she ran across to see her friend, she was hit by an eastbound vehicle,” said New Westminster Police Service Sgt. Gary Weishaar. “She ran across a red light, and the motorist didn’t have a chance to stop.” The girl was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital, where she was treated for injuries that included a fractured bone in her shoulder and numerous abrasions. www.twitter.com/AlfieLau

City eyeing a three per cent tax hike BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com
The City of New Westminster has trimmed the proposed 2011 tax increase from 4.87 to 2.98 per cent. When staff reported to council about the 2011 general fund operating budget in December, they proposed a tax rate increase of 4.87 per cent. Since that time, staff is exploring ways to reduce the increase. “In order to get it down from where we were on Dec. 6, we had suggested some options,” said Gary Holowatiuk, the city’s director of finance and information technology. “We noted the budget risks in accepting those options to get the tax rate down.”

this year to see if some of these new initiatives can be done within base budgets.” Holowatiuk suspects some of these initiatives won’t be able to be done within their department’s current base budgets. In addition to the base budgets put forward by city departments, council also considered a number of service enhancements for new, high-priority initiatives. These included additional staffing and consultants for the development services department to address the increased workload and work on various studies, additional staffing in engineering services to address increased workload and backlog, a youth firefighting program, software for ◗Taxes Page 4

A CLOSER LOOK: BREWERY DISTRICT IS THE EQUIVALENT OF RCH – BUT PAYS TAXES
‘This is the proverbial game changer’ Developer says New West will get an immediate tax injection of $970,000 BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com
The Brewery District is expected to pay $8 million in taxes when the development is fully complete. Construction of the first building at the former Labatt Brewery site is now underway, and businesses are expected to move in this summer. The Wesgroup believes the development will have a tremendous economic impact on New Westminster. “The Brewery District is the equivalent to the Royal Columbian Hospital but pays taxes,” said John Conicella, the company’s vice-president of development strategy and business development. “Not only does it pay taxes, but it pays a lot of taxes.” Conicella said Royal Columbian Hospital has about 2,200 full-time equivalent jobs but pays no taxes because it’s a hospital. He said the Brewery District will pay about $8.3 million in taxes when it’s fully built out, including $5.1 million to the municipality. “You are getting another Royal Columbian Hospital from jobs, but you are getting a huge tax base,” he said. ◗ CIVIC CENTRE
Open house on Thursday
The City of New Westminster will hold a public hearing on Feb. 21 regarding the rezoning of land for the new civic centre. In order for the project to proceed as proposed, the zoning bylaw for the properties at 731 to 777 Columbia St. must be amended. The amendment is needed for floor space, building height and parking garage setbacks from surrounding streets. The project will also require a liquor primary licence. “The proposed civic centre and office tower is an exciting and challenging project which will alter the appearance of
Columbia Street by providing an iconic building and adding new uses to make the downtown and the city a more complete place,” said a city staff report. The civic centre will include conference space, a theatre, an art gallery, museum/ archives, various arts functions and public spaces. It will also include a six- to eightstorey office tower. An open house about the multi-use civic facility is being held on Thursday, Jan. 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Westminster Club, on the seventh floor of 713 Columbia St. www.twitter.com/TheresaMcManus

the library’s telephone mail and e-mail notification systems, and additional staffing for the parks department, which has 11 new amenities to maintain. Holowatiuk said departments will attempt to provide these services within their base budgets. They’ll report to the chief administrative office and human resources director about staffing needs as the year progresses. He noted the city has “a bit of a surplus” from the past year, in part from development fees paid to the city very late in 2010. “One of the drivers of that surplus this year was the fact that one or two developers, maybe more, came in right at the end of the year on Dec. 30,” said Holowatiuk. “I suspect a big piece of that was because of the new DCC (development cost charge) rates coming in on Jan. 1. It might not have been the only reason.” The city’s coffers

received $1 to $2 million from developers in the final days of 2010. The city will provide an overview of the draft 2011 to 2015 plan at the Feb. 14 council meeting, at which time people can ask questions or comment on the budget. “I think it’s reasonable,” said Coun. Bill Harper of the 2.98 per cent tax increase. “We have always been very modest here. If you look around, there are some cities that have five per cent increases this year.”
Coun. Betty McIntosh was the lone councillor to oppose the increase. “It could have been less, definitely,” said McIntosh. “From last year there was $1.8 million surplus. That equates to four per cent.” McIntosh added that she informed staff in December that she wanted to see a tax increase of no more than two per cent in 2011 and felt that was an achievable target based on the work city workers did in reducing the proposed tax increase from 4.87 to down to 2.7 per cent.

Trustees set to debate fate of tiny school BY ALFIE LAU REPORTER alau@royalcityrecord.com
What’s the future of a school that has only 26 students? That’s what New Westminster school trustees debated on Tuesday night (after Record deadlines) when the issue of Hume Park Elementary came back on the open agenda. According to a report put forth by secretary-treasurer Brian Sommerfeldt, the trustees had to decide whether to restart the process of closing the school, an issue they deferred from an Oct. 26, 2010 meeting. At issue is whether the district wants to begin a 45day consultation period to find out the pros and cons of closing the school that had only 26 students registered on Sept. 30, 2010. Liberals’ George Abbott and Mike de Jong are probably closer to each other when it comes to policies than they are with some of their own rivals in their own parties. And each party is eyeing the other one, wondering what kind of scenario will develop after they make their choices. Judging from what many people are saying in both parties,
I suspect each party is hoping the other one opts for the most ideological candidate. The B.C. Liberals seem to relish the prospect of running against Dix, whose close association with the class warfare tactics of the former Glen Clark government gives his opponents lots of ammunition to fire back at him. Likewise, New Democrats would love to square off against Falcon, who they consider to be too right-wing for many middleof-the-road voters who may consider voting for either party. Of course, any problems the general public may have with either candidate don’t necessarily cut much ice with the party members who will be choosing the leaders. In fact, Dix may hold an advantage over his rivals precisely because he is the most left-wing candidate, given that a major chunk of the party membership likely shares his philosophical views. Both parties seem to be less sure about the so-called populist candidates. Some New Democrats think Clark would be an inviting target, while others I talk to are nervous about her charisma and communications skills. Horgan is the candidate who may puzzle the B.C. Liberals the most, at least for now. He’s relatively unknown and doesn’t have a lot of baggage from the past. But it is the middle-of-theroad candidates who seem to have both sides equally nervous. Farnworth, Abbott and, to a lesser ◗Leaders Page 7

Re: It’s time to find civility again, In the House, by Keith Baldrey, Jan. 22, The Record. Keith Baldrey is quite right to condemn the nasty, uncivil messages sent to B.C.’s acting chief electoral officer, Craig James, just because he briefly delayed the recall campaign. On a national level, however, every Canadian should be repulsed by re-emergence of that ploy of the Stephen Harper government: the attack ads that appear whenever the smell of a federal election is in the air. Apparently Mr. Harper believes that widely distributed, arrogant messages insulting opposition party leaders can take the place of campaigning with truth and dignity on issues of importance to the people he is supposed to represent. Your ballot holds the key to telling Mr. Harper that he has it wrong.
As a new resident of downtown New West, I am appalled at how irresponsible many dog owners are in regards to scooping the poop when walking their pets. In other areas of the Lower Mainland, it was owners of large breeds that tended to leave waste behind; here, it is every size of dog, judging by the disgusting messes left lying around. Waste is not only left on the precious little grass there is, but on sidewalks and even in the dog parks as well. Yesterday, there was a pile in front of our courthouse! Others leave plastic bags with the contents on the street. What is wrong with pet owners here? Do these “animal lovers” not realize that they may be endangering the health of other dogs? My puppy contracted two different parasites, most likely contracted

from a quake in decades, experts say the odds of eventually getting hit with a big one are considerable. According to Natural Resources Canada, an earthquake occurs in southwest B.C. almost every day, although most are too small to be felt. If we’ve added to your anxiety a bit, well, that’s not a bad thing. Today was the Great British Columbian ShakeOut, and if it includes getting shaken up figuratively to do something – better now than getting shaken up literally later and having no plan to fall back on.

Fundraiser a big success
Dear Editor:
It is important for us to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to The Record newspaper for their generous and continuous support of events. The Record staff goes above and beyond to assist local fundraisers to help people in need and this time “the tiniest of them all.” Jan. 14 was a lovely event at the River Market, a fundraiser for Royal Columbian Hospital neonatal unit, and the venue showed well. Thank you, Mark, your family members and Julie Ramirez. Vancouver Circus School performed for the community for their first charity fundraiser partnership with Vancouver Raw Food School. Thank you to the local Johnson family: Travis, Aaron and Mom, Nigel and staff, and the circus volunteers of all ages who showed us such diverse, incredible performances. The space presented a well-decorated plan, thanks to our local designer Greta Fogstrom and lovely plant decor from city hall. Mystery balloons sold well and offered fun prizes, thanks to the committee consisting of Coun. Betty McIntosh and husband
Ken, Marge Ashdown and husband John. John, thanks for loaning us your wife and for assisting in any area that we needed support. Thanks to Great Wall Tea Company, Paddlewheeler Pub, Paddlewheeler Boat Tours, Tiny, Old Spaghetti Factory and many others for balloon prizes. Eric from Donald’s Market is a dream, and we thank him for his generosity of ingredient donations to prepare healthy, organic foods for the guests and his commitment to bet prices, quality and service. Local Pacific Breeze Winery donated wine sampling and prizes, and beautiful Suzanna served the guests award-winning tastes. Thanks so much, Pacific Breeze, for all of your community support, and continue to win awards. Clive Langton, from Raw B.C., did a great job of helping us promote this charity fundraiser and assisting throughout the evening. The band volunteered their time, and Janice Grant of Dance with Me Studio provided our guest dancers. You were gracious and more, and we thank you for such beautiful expression. Thank you, Mayor Wayne Wright, Mayor Richard Stewart and Mayor Greg Moore for supporting the hospital. We appreciate you taking the time from your busy schedules to be there. Thank you to the local city councillors who attended: Jonathan Cote, Bill Harper, Betty McIntosh and Lorrie Williams. We feel blessed to have supporters, volunteers and community patrons to come out and to support special causes such as the neonatal unit at Royal Columbian Hospital. We can’t thank you enough. Many of our young volunteers are involved in holistic nutrition, raw foods and a healthy journey in life, and it sure shows. Thanks again.

degree, De Jong, are the types of leaders who can poach voters from other parties. Not everyone who votes for the B.C. Liberals considers themselves right-wing, just as not all NDP voters think they are leftists. As such, Farnworth could appeal to a lot of soft B.C. Liberals who may be tired of their party but who don’t want to embrace a jarringly different kind of philosophy. Abbott is the same kind of candidate. He could easily appeal to soft NDP voters who are uneasy about the New Democrats’ reputation on economic issues. Since the B.C. Liberals choose their leader first, it
will be interesting to see if that choice has a direct bearing on the views of NDP members. Will it provide them with a guide to the better choice, or will it simply confuse things even further? For example, if Clark wins, NDPers have to ask themselves which of their candidates would fare best against her. Would Dix or, say, Farnworth stand the best chance? Of if Abbott wins, is the NDP better off to go with an ideologue (Dix) or a moderate like Farnworth? Imagine a Falcon victory coupled with a Dix win: that would create a lively but polarizing choice for voters – right versus left, with no prisoners being
taken. Of course, many NDP members won’t take any of this into consideration when they mark their ballots. Winning elections is not the motivation for many of them – ensuring the party rigidly sticks to an ideological path is more important. Nevertheless, the potential match-ups are intriguing. Will it be an ideologue versus a moderate, or a populist versus an ideologue, or a moderate versus a populist? Both parties face the same array of choices. Whatever the outcome, it’s going to be fascinating to watch. Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global B.C.

A Maple Ridge teen who has spent far more time in New Westminster than she would have liked is on a mission to help out other visitors to the Royal City. Miranda Tymoschuk, 14, was born with one leg shorter than the other, a condition that has required nine painful surgeries at Royal Columbian Hospital over the years. She knows firsthand how important it is to have family close by when in hospital. “Unfortunately, it is not always possible for parents to stay with their children without having to worry about how much it will cost,” said the Grade 9 student. “Parking is expensive, the parents have to buy all of their meals, transportation to and from the hospital and many other things end up adding up to a lot of money. Sometimes people are flown in with nothing but the clothes on their backs.” On Jan. 28, she will present $1,600 to the hospital that she has raised through bake sales, bottle drives and donations made through her website, www.payitforward fund.ca. Tymoschuk, whose father passed away when she was just five years old, says she is grateful for financial assistance that enabled her mother to be by her side and wants to repay the kindness by helping others. “When I was in the hospital for a few of my surgeries, my mom had taken some time off work to be with me,” she said. “This meant that she wasn’t making any money, but having to spend a whole lot. When I got out of the hospital, I decided to pay it forward and help out other families. Seeing the people and how grateful they are is just wonderful.” Tymoschuk suffers from a condition

Local resident appealing assessment Crosty said, and there haven’t been any major changes to the neighbourhood to improve the values. His taxes were about $1,700 for 2010, he said, and he’s estimating they could be as high as $2,600 for 2011. That’s too much for a condo, Crosty said. “It’s not like it’s going to be too detrimental to me,” he explained, but added he’s more concerned about seniors on fixed incomes. People over 65 can apply for deferrals on their taxes, he said, but this just pushes the amount owing to the end of their lifetime, when they and their families need it most. He’s asking that anyone in New Westminster who received an assessment increase of 30 per cent or more in the 2011 assessment roll contact him about appealing the assessments as a group. He can be reached at crostyca@ gmail.com. The City of New Westminster is currently looking at property tax rates for 2011. New West is proposing a 2.98 per cent increase – down from an initial 4.87 per cent. (See related story on page 1.) While New Westminster’s residential property assessments went up by 9.11 per cent overall, some homeowners saw a much higher increase. James Crosty, a citizen advocate in New Westminster, saw the assessed value of his condo increase by 52 per cent, he said. He’s helping neighbours and other members of the community band together to appeal their assessments. Crosty lives at 31 Reliance Ct., in the west Quay neighbourhood of New Westminster, and he said some of the other people in his building saw increases of 30 and 35 per cent this year. “It’s insane,” he said. “We don’t know why.” One of his neighbours called city hall to find out the reason, he said, and was told it had to do with her waterfront view of the Fraser River. But Crosty pointed out the city doesn’t actually set the assessment rates each year; B.C. Assessment is a provincial government corporation. The building is 20 years old,

Meal made of lost gospels afleming@royalcityrecord.com
Douglas College creative writing instructor Rick Maddocks has made a name for himself through writing both fiction and music, so it seemed a logical progression for him to tackle a project that would combine the two passions. Best known as the frontman of local atmospheric roots band The Beige, Maddocks has collaborated with a handful of other local indie musicians and theatre types to compose The Meal, a (sort of) musical based on the biblical Last Supper, which will be making its premiere at this year’s PuSh Festival in Vancouver. “I think that a lot of people’s warning lights go on when they hear the words ‘musical’ or ‘Christianity,’ but this is really more of a song cycle,” said Maddocks. “I wouldn’t characterize it as a musical, but

there is no dialogue.” The performance imagines what might have transpired immediately before and after the world’s most famous awkward dinner party. Maddocks, who describes himself as a “free agent” rather than a Christian, said he has always been interested in religion and the idea for The Meal came to him after studying the so-called Gnostic Gospels, the teachings of Christ supposedly written by apostles that nonetheless didn’t make the final edit of the Bible. The lost gospels have recently gained renewed attention after being featured in the Dan Brown bestseller The Da Vinci Code. “I was approached by the PuSh Festival and offered a commission to create a project that stepped outside of the bounds of what I usually do,” said Maddocks, whose critically acclaimed short story collection Sputnik Diner was nominated for the Danuta Gleed Literary Award. “The Gnostic Gospels always seemed intriguing to me, but I didn’t really know a whole lot about them, so I basically just did a whole lot of reading and research. It was really a discovery process and an investigation. There are so many controversial ideas that came out

of the Gnostic Gospels such as the Gospel of Judas and the Gospel of Mary Magdalene and all these other writings that weren’t allowed into the Bible.” Given the subject matter, it likely won’t come as a surprise that the style of music is also gospel. “The idea kind of percolated during a time I was getting into ’70s gospel funk, but I wanted to try something that wasn’t just imitating established gospel music, which would be kind of foolish of me to do because I don’t come from that tradition.” So instead of a full gospel choir backing things up, The Meal instead features a backing band and a four-person cast made up of local chanteuse Jody Glenham as Mary Magdalene, Nautical Miles lead singer Corbin Murdoch as Judas, The Abramson Singers’ Lucien Durey as John, and Maddocks himself stepping into the sandals of Thomas. Card contest ending BY JANAYA FULLER-EVANS REPORTER
jfuller-evans@royalcityrecord.com
Is that a Starfish in your pocket? It’s down to three choices in TransLink’s smart card naming contest: Starfish, Compass and TPass. The company is asking Metro Vancouverites to vote on their favourite name. Voting goes until Jan. 28. Those who wish to do so can vote at www.trans link.ca or on TransLink’s Facebook page. Mail-in votes are also acceptable, according to TransLink. The three finalists were selected from the more than 56,000 entries received in the naming contest in October and November, with 14,000 unique names in all. Each faced extensive market research, focus groups and legal and trademark searches before being brought forward to a public vote, according to a press release. “It is important that the public chooses a smart card name that resonates with them; after all, beginning in 2013, it’s going to be a card they carry for all their transportation needs,” said Ian Jarvis, TransLink CEO, in the release. “The smart card system has the poten-
tial to be used for much more than transportation in the future, which is why everyone – not just transit customers – should vote for the name that they want to see on their card.” Once the votes are tallied on Jan. 28, TransLink plans to create a card that resonates with the chosen name. The final name, and the contest winner, is to be announced at the end of March. The card and system are expected to be introduced by 2013. The Smart Card would replace cash, passes and FareSaver tickets and allow TransLink to charge riders based on distance travelled, rather than the current boundary system. The faregate turnstiles

Overweight and obesity Being overweight or obese simply means you have too much total body fat. A person is Dr. Panchi Peng, considered TCMD obese when his or her weight is 20 per cent or more above normal weight for that individual’s height and age. The most common measure of obesity is the Body Mass Index (or BMI). A person is considered overweight if his or her BMI is between 25 and 29.9; a person is considered obese if his or her BMI is over 30. “Morbid obesity”, a lifethreatening condition, is a term which implies one or more of the following four situations: Obesity occurs when a person consumes more calories than he or she uses. For many people this boils down to simply eating too much and not being
active enough. But there are other factors that also play a role in obesity. These may include: age, gender, genetics, environmental factors, psychological factors, certain illnesses, and certain medications. However, the most common causes of obesity are overeating (often with a poor diet) and lack of physical activity. Chinese acupuncture is a very effective therapy among many weight loss treatments. Our body has many acupuncture points
which can be stimulated with acupuncture needles. This will naturally decrease appetite and increase energy levels if done regularly – provided, of course, that the patient also makes an effort to improve his or her lifestyle and diet. Dr. Panshi Peng is a licensed practitioner of acupuncture and Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine; His office is located at the corner of Joyce and Kingsway. Phone: (604) 436-0660

Over 1,000 local cyclists at Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition (VACC) agree: cycling works. If you are passionate about the environment and love to cycle, VACC wants you to get involved. And we have a New Westminster chapter just for you! Every month, New West cyclists gather at the New Westminster Public Library to identify ways to make New West more bikefriendly and develop strategies to advocate for cycling. VACC’s mission is two-fold: advocate for better biking conditions and educate to develop the skills and confidence to bike in an urban setting.

we put our time where our passions are, and VACC volunteers are no exception to the rule. Recent New West chapter successes include a 2010 update of the New Westminster Bicycle Map, input into the New West leg of the Central Valley Greenway, and improved cyclist access to Queensborough Bridge. Currently on the agenda for VACC – New West are getting better cyclist signage in the area around Queensborough Bridge, and making sure cyclists are part of the discussion as New Westminster updates its City Master Transportation Plan and TransLink develops its Transportation Plans. In early June, VACC organizes Bike to Work Week. In 2010, 7,285 riders hit the roads for VACC’s fourth annual Bike to Work Week, up from 2,700 in 2007! The 2010 bike commuters logged 173,776 km of riding and prevented a whopping 32,651 kilograms of car-related carbon dioxide from going up in smoke.

But the fun doesn’t stop in October. By popular demand, we now enjoy a Royal City Winter Market November to May on the second Saturday of the month at the Holy Trinity Cathedral.
And come out to the RCFM Annual General Meeting on Saturday February 5 at 5:30 to 9:30 PM at Holy Trinity Cathedral (514 Carnarvon Street). The Burnaby building that houses the Community Centred College for the Retired reminded me a bit of a prairie schoolhouse when I first drove by. And what an appropriate image that turned out to be! Sid Cumbers, Vice President of the College, has been teaching at the College since he was 63 years old. Sid’s story may be familiar to many new retirees: “My wife kicked me out of the house! Not really, but she wanted me to find something to do.” An idle life doesn’t suit anyone very well, so when Sid saw an advertisement in the local paper seeking instructors, he was ready to get involved. “Do you remember the Commodore 64?” says Sid. That was my first computer, when I Water-colour class at the Community Centred College for the Retired. was 12! Well, Sid knew how to use one, so Sid’s encountered? “Clowning. New dance pair wins Canadian junior title BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com
Burnaby’s Nicole Orford skated her way to a junior dance title at the Skate Canada junior national championships in Victoria Jan. 20. Orford and partner Thomas Williams, the Western Challenge junior dance champions in Mississauga, Ont. in December, outdid themselves in the provincial capital, garnering more than 130 total points to easily outdistance the 15-pair field. The Burnaby Centre of Excellence pair led after the short dance with a 54.50 score. They then scored nearly 76 points in the free dance portion to post a personal-best score, nearly 10 points better than their winning total at the Canadian Challenge. “We knew they could get a big score,” said Aaron Lowe, coach of the team with former skate partner Megan Wing in a Postmedia News report. “The potential was there, if they laid everything down, if they were smooth, and if they attacked it like they did tonight.” “I don’t think it could have gone much better,” added the Albertaborn Williams, 19, who moved west in May to skate with the 18-year-old Burnaby resident.

◗ WOMENS CURLING
The two Kellys play out another Scotties thriller
BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com
To put a new spin on an old song – two out of three ain’t good. That was the tune Kelly Law’s Royal City Curling Club rink was humming after a disappointing 5-3 loss to defending champion Kelly Scott of Kelowna at the B.C. Scotties women’s curling championships Sunday. The two skips met each other in last year’s provincial final with Scott again coming out on top. At this year’s provincial, the Law rink of third Jody Maskiewich, second Shannon Aleksic and lead Kristen Recksiedler had defeated the three-time titlist two times earlier leading up to the final in Cloverdale. In round-robin play, Law
skipped her way to a 9-3 win in Draw 3, with three in the fifth and a whopping five in the final eighth end. The New Westminster foursome also defeated Scott 9-2 to advance to the B.C. final. In that game, Law scored three in the third, fifth and seventh ends. But the final had a different outcome. In a closely played final and Scott leading 4-3 in the final end, Law had a chance to force an extra end with a draw to the four-foot circle, but left her shot a little heavy, allowing the Kelowna champs to steal one and a fourth overall B.C. title. The Scott rink will now advance to the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Prince Edward Island Feb. 19 to 27 . Law’s only defeat at the

provincial was a 9-5 loss to Kristy Lewis of Richmond. RCCC’s Adina Tasaka was equally unfortunate, losing out in a playoff tiebreaker with Lewis, who both finished the roundrobin with similar 5-4 records. Leading 4-3 following a three-end sixth, Lewis replied with a deuce in the seventh and a steal of one in the eighth to win 6-5. Earlier in the competition, Tasaka defeated Lewis 7-4 on the strength of a three-end seventh. The Tasaka rink, including third Darah Provencal, second Heather Beatty and lead Jennifer Armstrong, also handed Scott her only other loss at the provincials. The Tasaka foursome edged the Kelowna crew 65, taking the see-saw match with a single in the 10th.

Clan women snap long losing streak BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com
Freshman guard Kia Van Laare shot down Simon Fraser University’s nine-game losing streak. Van Laare came off the bench to score a team-high 21 points to lead the Clan women’s basketball team to an 82-71 road victory over the University of AlaskaFairbanks on Saturday. The New Westminster Secondary grad found her range, potting 15 points – all five three-pointers – in the second half, helping the Clan keep a double-digit lead over the Nanooks for the entire second half. The win improves the Clan’s record to 4-9 and 1-7 in Great Northwest conference play. “Kia has been incredibly proficient in practice, but was struggling in games, and normally in most situations, we would have cut her off from the shooting the three and tell her to try other things. But in this case, we have been telling her to try and shoot early, and if she gets in a rhythm then she can keep at it,” said SFU head coach Bruce Langford in a Clan press release. SFU came out on fire,

shooting a sizzling 63 per cent in the opening 20 minutes. The Clan finished the game shooting 31-for-58 from the field, including nine-for-22 from threepoint land. Carla Wyman added 15 points for the Clan, while Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe and Kristina Collins added 14 and 10 points, respectively. On Thursday, SFU dropped a 65-52 decision to the No. 15-ranked University of AlaskaAnchorage in the state’s largest city. Wyman led the Clan with 12 points. Van Laare added 11 points, including three treys. Raincock-Ekunwe, the leading scorer in the conference with 20.7 points per game and 12 rebounds per outing, was held to just 10 points and nine boards. The Clan women are at home to Central Washington on Jan. 27 and to Northwest Nazarene on Saturday.

◗ FIGURE SKATING
Fourth national title for pre-teen champ BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com
Rack up a fourth Canadian title for Burnaby’s biggest little figure skater. Brentwood Park Elementary School Grade 7 student Nam Nguyen won a fourth national skating title with a dominating performance in the junior men’s category at the Skate Canada junior nationals in Victoria last week. Nguyen, all four-foot nine of him, captured the junior title with a spectacular free dance that garnered a whopping 114.67 score en route to a convincing 169.89 total points. Nguyen led after the compulsory short skate by less than a point over runner-up Shaquille Davis. Nguyen’s final score easily bettered the 18-yearold Ontario skater by more than 24 total points. Nguyen also bested bronze medallist Peter O’Brien, who is four years his senior. On the medal podium both of the medallists towered over the dimunitive
12-year-old, who won’t be old enough to compete internationally on the junior Grand Prix circuit until next season. “Winning the junior title feels amazing to me,” said Nguyen. “But winning over older guys, I’m used to it.” Because of his age, Nguyen will also not be able to represent Canada at the world junior championships later this season. But that has not stopped Nguyen from making a remarkable record run at Canada’s various national titles in the past four years. Last year, Nguyen won a bronze in his debut at the junior national championships. He holds the record as the youngest skater to win three consecutive national championship titles. Nguyen won his first juvenile men’s title as an eight-year-old. A year later, he took the gold medal in pre-novice at the nationals. As a 10-yearold, Nguyen then won the Canadian novice men’s
title. With this weekend’s win, Nguyen is believed to be Canada’s youngestever junior men’s skating champion. But Nguyen is not the youngest-ever junior Canadian champion. Former Olympic silver medallist and 1973 world women’s figure skating champion Karen Magnussen holds that honour, winning a Canadian junior girls’ title at the tender age of 11. In the junior women’s competition, Kitty Qian of Burnaby improved on her ninth-place finish at the Canadian Challenge last month to place runner-up at the nationals in Victoria. Qian was in fourth place after the short skate but put down a blistering free skate, topping all other skaters with an 81.51 score. Roxanne Rheault of Quebec managed to hold off Qian and take the junior women’s gold medal with a 123.66 total. Qian garnered 121.29 total points following her two programs.

Social media presence should be professional
Thanks to Facebook (an outlet which was clearly made for you), your 350 online friends know more about your life than some of your ‘real’ friends: your baby’s milestones, your dog Sparky’s recurring rash and, let’s not forget your chronic basement leakage. But when it comes to advancing your career – particularly, finding your next job – cute status
updates don’t cut it. To get ahead professionally, you need a strategic, professional social media presence, says Sherrie Madia, a social media expert and director of communications at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. “It’s an interesting concept and an interesting time for job seekers,” says Madia, who recently co-authored The Social Media Survival Guide. “There’s a lot of panic and nervousness out there, but there’s a lot of good feelings as well because we have more opportunity now than ever before, truly.” Thanks to social media, job seekers can draw hiring managers to them, through profiles on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and, of course, good old-fashioned personal websites. “Now, we can be focused on really planting the seeds in the right places,” she says. “Rather The Shortest than job candidates seeking employers, (employers) can also be Path To Your seeking us.” Business Career In fact, it’s commonplace for employers to check out prospective

employees online, so having a strong digital presence isn’t just about catching the eye of a hiring manager online - it’s also about ensuring that you’re representing yourself well in the event they’re checking up on you. For that reason, the first step to crafting a solid social media presence is researching your current digital footprint, says Madia. Start by searching for your name on one of the search engines. For many job seekers, this exercise is “a little bit of shock and awe,” she admits. “Often candidates are surprised that: a) they do have a presence; and b) what that presence consists of.” Not surprisingly, step two is deleting anything that might be the least bit unprofessional (perhaps revealing Facebook photos you’ve been tagged in) or a poor representation of who you are. Not everything can be removed, but do what you can, says Madia. If you’re a person without an online presence, it’s time to build one. Before you set yourself up with a social media account, keep in mind that you need to start what you finish. Recruiters will raise an eyebrow at incomplete profiles.
