Kid care costs on agenda City council looks at covering child-care expenses for politicos on city business BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com
Members of New Westminster city council could have some of their child-care costs covered. Council recently received a report about having the city cover costs for councillors needing child care while they attend business meetings and functions. The proposal would see councillors reimbursed for the actual cost of babysitting or child minding, to a maximum of $40 a day, while they’re attending an event or official function. Coun. Jaimie McEvoy proposed the idea, after attending conferences on the city’s behalf and finding he was one of the youngest people in the room. That got him to thinking that the city should take steps to make it easier for people to be in public office. “It wasn’t my intention to make it easier just for women,” he said. “It’s an expensive proposition if you have kids and you want to be on city council.” McEvoy said he has no children so he wouldn’t personally benefit from the policy. Coun. Jonathan Cote is the only current council member who has young children. “I didn’t tell him in advance,” McEvoy said about his proposal. “I didn’t want him to be on the hot seat.” ◗Child care Page 8

Burnaby’s Footlight Theatre was up for the same award for its production of The Sound of Music, which played at the Michael J. Fox Theatre in November. Also capturing an award for Royal City Musical Theatre’s Joseph production was New Westminster’s Chris Sinosich, who walked away with top honours for Outstanding Costume Design. A CLOSER LOOK: RESTAURANTS GET CREATIVE TO ENTICE CUSTOMERS
Local restaurants are hungry for business BY ALFIE LAU REPORTER alau@royalcityrecord.com
Everything from the lowly coupon to extended hours to special promotions is being used by local restaurateurs to try to keep their doors open. With the news that high-profile Vancouver restaurants such as A Kettle of Fish and The Corner Suite shut their doors just after Christmas, has the same fate befallen any Burnaby and New Westminster eateries? The short answer is: You don’t know because people shutting down their businesses don’t make it a point of advertising their failure. Notice of a closing will come with a hastily written note tacked on the door of a now dark restaurant or, in this day of social media, a tweet or Facebook notice thanking customers for their patronage. In New Westminster, the Orange Room closed down in November. In Burnaby, rumours of Golden Pita Foods near Lougheed Town Centre closing turned out to be untrue. Golden Pita is merely undergoing substantial renovations and is hoping to reopen by Friday (Feb. 4). For the survivors of the restaurant wars, January and February are historically tough months because people are partied out from the holidays, money’s tight and the weather is often too frightful for people to go out and enjoy themselves. But restaurant owners and managers still have to pay the bills, and this year, they’re doing more and more to try to woo customers in. “No question this is a tough time,” said Mike McKee, general manager of Moonrakers in uptown New Westminster. “We’ve been hit by the double whammy of the HST and the new liquor regulations. Between the two of them, it’s been tough sledding.” What that has forced McKee to do is offer more specials, such as half-price appetizers after 6 p.m. on select days and trying to educate customers on how the new drunk driving laws would affect them. “We’re trying to encourage people to eat if they don’t think they can have another drink,” said McKee. “And we’re trying to do more events to encourage people to come in.” Such events include showing all the NFL playoff games on the big screens, including the Jan. 16 10 a.m. Seattle SeahawksChicago Bears game. “There are a lot of Seahawk fans after their big win (against New Orleans on Jan. 8),” said McKee. Just across the border in Burnaby, Urban Peppers owner Keith Browne opened his eatery in September, almost at the worst possible time for a restaurant to open, but he’s tried several innovative approaches to getting more people in.
Larry Wright/THE RECORD
Packed Sabbath: Moonrakers general manager Mike McKee, left, with server Erin Van Zytveld, have had to do many innovative things to get customers spending more at the Uptown pub. This Sunday promises to be one of the busiest days of the year with Super Bowl XLV on deck. “I’ve got a karaoke machine, and we SwarmJam to sell their coupons, often offershow all the big sporting events,” he said. ing 50 per cent or more in savings. Other restaurants have used popular discount and sometimes it means doing group coupon sites such as Groupon and special orders. ... I had somebody come in
asking for a dosa in the morning, and he thought it might be a problem, but I have no problem making what my customers want.” Things are so dire in the restaurant industry that the B.C. Restaurant and Foodservices Association estimates as many as 2,400 of B.C.’s 12,000 restaurants could close their doors this year because of the HST. In a normal year, the association expects to see about 1,200 closures, with roughly the same number of new businesses opening. For McKee, the suggestion by politicos that the HST referendum be moved up from September to May or June would be welcomed. “I think getting closure, one way or the other, with the HST will be good because right now there’s uncertainty as to whether the HST is here to stay. Uncertainty makes people nervous. “I remember back to when the GST came in. People didn’t like it but they got acclimated to it. ... Right now with the HST, we’re in this sort of purgatory because people don’t know if it’s coming or going.”

Judging by the busy crowds at the 2011 Festival of Volunteers on Saturday, more than a few Royal City residents must have made New Year’s resolutions to find the time to volunteer. Hundreds of people stopped by the Royal City Centre on Jan. 29 to find out about volunteer opportunities in New Westminster and Metro Vancouver, and Stacy Ashton, executive director of Community Volunteer Connections, said many of the 45 non-profit groups managed to find some new recruits. “It was really good,” said Ashton. “We had a lot of organizations tell us they were really thrilled with how many people came out and signed u at their booths. Most reported they spoke to at least 100 different people.” Entertainment was also provided by amateur thespians from the Backroom Theatre Club, dancers from Wild West CanCan Dancers and Dazzling Divas, and music by Cal Donnelly. Local radio stations, 100.5 The Peak and 93.7 JRfm also broadcast live from the event. Two city councillors also engaged in a heated public debate at the event, although this time it wasn’t regarding any of the city’s usual hot topics

our taxes are being spent? Just look at the debate that city budgets always ignite. The debate over whether salary levels on reserves are as high as alleged by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation is really beside the point. One might compare band council and chief salaries to those of neighbouring municipal councils. But one could also make the case for a comparison to the executive and chairman of a national company who receive six-figure incomes.
The larger point, surely, is where millions of federal funds go to on an annual basis. We believe any Canadian should have the right to see an annual, audited statement. In the B.C. Liberal camp, that seems to be a common theme among candidates such as Christy Clark, George Abbott and Mike de Jong. But one candidate in particular seems to be taking the opposite approach. Kevin Falcon, in his quest to win the B.C. Liberal leadership, appears interested primarily in demonstrating that he views the business community as pretty well the only constituency worth wooing. Almost every day, Falcon’s camp issues a news release boasting of the latest CEO or business leader endorsing his candidacy. This week, his campaign took out a full-page ad in The Vancouver Sun (at the very least, a sign that his campaign is well-funded) that listed more than 100 business owners or CEOs who support his candidacy. This was followed up by the announcement that David Emerson, the highly respected
former federal cabinet minister and forestry executive, was also backing Falcon. And I’m sure there will be plenty more such announcements in the weeks leading up to the Feb. 26 vote. While garnering such support is impressive and advantageous in a leadership race, it does raise some interesting questions that may arise if Falcon were to actually become premier. Given that supporting business interests seem to a top priority for him, would a Falconled government therefore give shrift to other issues, such as the environment, social services or aboriginal relations? It’s no secret that Falcon is fairly right-wing, although I think the time he’s spent at the cabinet table has modified some of his views over the years. But he seems to think that if the business community is happy (i.e. profitable), then everything else will work itself out. But, of course, not everyone has that kind of faith in no-holdsbarred capitalism. We still have a welfare state, and environmental values rank high in this province. Simply embracing the business community as a top priority may not cut it with a lot of voters. Another potential problem for Falcon is that he has provided a lot of ammunition to critics who will examine the relationship between government and his supporters (you can be sure the NDP has clipped and saved that full-page ad).
NDP eyeing another coalition
Dear Editor:
Re: Enough with the trash talk by our leaders, Our View, The Record, Jan. 29. As a candidate, many ask for my reading about when there may be an election. When the opposition cannot find legitimate criticisms, they throw mud, hoping something will stick. By far the most incivility comes from the opposition – just watch Question Period on CPAC. They forget that the more mud they throw, the more ground they lose. The Conservatives are ready for an election, but the prime minister has emphatically said that the country does not want or need an election at this time and that the government will try to keep things steady for the international economic challenges that Canada faces. The Conservatives will ◗Falcon Page 7 not provoke an election. However, here are a few insights.
The NDP are now strongly posturing for another election and the coalition option. Yesterday, NDP leader Jack Layton told his caucus, “I’ve been touching base with our election teams on the ground. … Folks, we are ready.” (Globe and Mail, Jan. 28) Prior to the 2008 election, Layton planned a coalition with the Bloc Québécois before the votes were even counted. (How We Almost Gave the Tories the Boot, by Brian Topp, p.46) Layton was willing to make Bloc Québécois leader Gilles Duceppe the “driving force” in the coalition. (Toronto Star, Oct. 6, 2010) Layton did this in spite of Duceppe calling Canada “ruinous.” (General Council of Quebec, March 20, 2010) Last time, Jack Layton did not reveal his plan until after the election; that’s the track record. Now Layton says he is ready for an election, with a notion of a coalition with the Bloc Québécois. He did it before, so why would he not do it again? ◗Layton Page 7

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Layton is ready to strike ◗ continued from page 6
As the polls in general have not moved much, another election may likely yield a similar result as now. However, the backdrop NDP plan is probably to force an election regardless, as they are not gaining ground under present circumstances, so they reason recklessly that they have nothing to lose. It is a calculation for themselves, and not for the country. Canada will lose economically with the specter of an unstable coalition of the Liberals, the socialists and the separatists. Harassment? Get real
Dear Editor:
Re: New park irks priest, The Record, Jan. 29. NIMBYism is bad enough. When it comes from a group that gets a free ride when it comes to taxes, it’s even worse. When they start implying that they are somehow a target of harassment, it is
intolerable. But then again, maybe next to a church isn’t the best place for a kids’ playground. It’s kind of like putting a chicken coop next to a wolf den. Larry Kammel, New Westminster

Dear Editor:
I am in complete disbelief that a pastor would be making such statement that the placement of a skate park mound would be anti-Catholic. Really? This guy should give his head a shake and ask God to forgive him for being so ignorant. Society complains that young people are becoming obese, sitting inside on computers or getting into trouble, and he is complaining that kids are actually using the skate park? I highly doubt that they have nothing better to do than stare at his mug while they are outside having fun. This guy needs to find a hobby, quit being so paranoid and find a new cause to get angry about. There are far bigger issues out there than some kids hanging out in a skate park.

Falcon: Does he need broader appeal? ◗ continued from page 6
For example, a number of pharmaceutical companies are backing his candidacy. If his government were to make any changes to drug policies that end up benefiting those companies, how long do you think it will take for the NDP to cry foul and allege a conflict-ofinterest? He also has the support of optometrists and transportation companies. Again, any changes to government policy that affect those operations will be framed against whatever contributions those companies gave to his campaign. There is also the issue of government contracts and grants. If any of them go to any of his business sup-
porters, he may be inviting the kind of scrutiny that can dog his time in office. What is somewhat surprising about all this is that Falcon, of all the candidates, does not have to establish his credentials as a business-friendly politician. His reputation on that front is already well known. Instead, I would have thought Falcon would have wanted to soften and broaden his image to appeal to a wider base of voters. Of course, he may think that’s not necessary during the leadership campaign. And, to be fair, the membership of the B.C. Liberal party – who are the ones choosing the leader – are certainly pro-business in their outlook, so coming
across as the most businessfriendly candidate will not be a disadvantage in that community. But whoever wins the leadership race will immediately have to govern for all British Columbians – not just party members. And the winner will eventually have to face the electorate in an election. If Falcon does indeed prove victorious on Feb. 26, he will soon discover that support from the business community can only take him so far. In a general election, the winner will need the support of a lot more people than simply CEOs. Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global B.C.

Police seek information in Saturday morning stabbing
New Westminster Police Service is putting out a call for help in solving an early morning stabbing this past weekend. Police say they received a 911 call just before 7 a.m. on Saturday advising that a man was suffering from stab wounds at an apartment building in the unit block of 10th Street. After arriving at the building, police found a 31-year-old New Westminster resident with a small stab wound to his left hip. According to a press release from Sgt. Gary Weishaar, the victim described the
suspect as a black man who goes by the name of Sam, around 30 years old, wearing black clothes. The victim told police he did not know why Sam had stabbed him and refused to offer any more information. The victim was treated for non-lifethreatening injuries at Royal Columbian Hospital and later released. Anyone with information is asked to contact New Westminster Police Service at 604-525-5411. – Brent Richter
Child care: City considers policy ◗ continued from page 1
McEvoy said council members receive a stipend that’s intended to compensate them for costs of the job, such as transportation. He believes it’s unfair to expect council members with children to pay an additional cost for child care so they can do the job they were elected to do. A staff report said council has reviewed child-care expense reimbursements that are offered in other Lower Mainland municipalities and asked staff to develop a policy similar to what’s offered by the Corporation of Delta. The report stated the city could cover costs for events such as the annual conventions put on by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the Union of B.C. Municipalities and the Lower Mainland Local Government Association, as well as any other local government related conventions, conferences, courses or seminars that are approved by council in advance. It would also apply to “official functions,” which would be any function where municipal business is carried out or where municipal representation is required, including committees and boards outside the city. According to McEvoy, staff projected that the policy would cost the city less than $500 a year. It said it’s not intended to provide free daycare for council members, but to help cover expenses if they’re needed at official functions and must pay for babysitting. “What I see very clearly

Sad farewell to local teacher Dean Gebauer taught for 17 years in the city’s POWER program BY ALFIE LAU REPORTER alau@royalcityrecord.com
Dean Gebauer, a well-known and well-respected teacher in the New Westminster School District’s POWER program, passed away on Jan. 27. Gebauer was diagnosed with a brain tumour last August. Despite undergoing an aggressive form of treatment, he was told just after Christmas that the doctors couldn’t do anything more for him. Gebauer was able to go home and receive palliative care while surrounded by his wife, Suzanne, and his family. Gebauer was born in Vancouver and grew up in Maple Ridge. After graduating from Garibaldi Senior Secondary School, he earned his bachelor of arts degree at Simon Fraser University. He worked for the Hudson Bay Company, rising through the ranks to become a manager. His business career was very successful, but his true calling was teaching. Twenty years ago, Gebauer made a complete career change to become a high school teacher. Gebauer found his calling in the Royal City, where he taught for 17 years in the POWER program, an alternate program which he helped develop. Gebauer was very involved in advocacy with the New Westminster Teachers’ Union and the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, holding many local executive positions and the position of vice-president of the local chapter, a post he had held since mid-2007. Grant Osborne, president of the

Twenty-five years of helping others Senior peer counselling program at Century House marks its silver anniversary BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com
A dedicated group of local seniors is committed to giving hope to peers who may be going through a tough time. The senior peer counselling program at Century House recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. Through the program, a senior is matched with a peer counsellor who is trained to help them deal with issues such as loss of health, a home or a loved one. “There’s really no situation that is considered insignificant if anyone is considered in distress of any kind,” said Robin Macdonald, the program’s trainer-consultant. Joy Barkwill, who started working at Century House in the early 1980s, said she often saw people coming into the facility who were facing challenges in their lives, particularly related to issues around loss. On one particular occasion, she witnessed a senior help another woman who was on the verge of tears, upset about the recent death of her husband. “People with similar life experiences have great power,” she concluded after watching the grieving woman leave in much better spirits after chatting with one of her peers. When Century House launched the senior peer counselling program in 1985, it was one of the first programs of its kind in British Columbia. It took a bit of time for some seniors to be comfortable seeking help from their peers. “We had to earn that by doing good work and being trusted in our confidentiality,” said Beryl Petty, who was the program’s first supervisor-trainer. “It was about the two-year mark that one lady

We knew we had arrived when we heard comments like that.” Through the years, the program has adapted to meet the changing needs of seniors. That ranged from expanding ser-
vices from the one-on-one counselling to include group work and classes, and having the peer counsellors to support various groups at Century House. “When we found there was a need in a certain place, we would make a sug-
gestion,” said Dot Josey, a member of the program’s first class of volunteers. Barkwill believes that one of the key factors to the program’s success has been the ongoing education and weekly case ◗Peer counselling Page 14
Peer counselling program secures funding The future looks bright for the seniors’ peer counselling program, which has secured a threeyear funding commitment. Joy Barkwill, who worked at Century House when the program got underway in 1987, recalled meeting that year with Westminster Savings Credit about funding opportunities. She remembers getting a call 45 minutes after the meeting wrapped and learning Westminster Savings would fully fund the program for three years. “That was an amazing accom-
plishment,” she said. “It has never been that way since.” In the program’s early years, Century House volunteers worked at bingo halls or casinos to help raise funds for the program. “How much does this program cost? It’s been $10,000 a year from our funder,” said Robin Macdonald, the program’s trainer. “We raise $5,000 ourselves.” Nowadays, the sale of break open tickets and productions by the Golden Age Theatre at Century House help raise money
for the program. For a number of years, Fraser Health funded the program, but that ended in September 2009. While funding has been an ongoing challenge for the program, it’s recently received some good news on that front. Leslie Cole, the city’s current manager of seniors and youth services, said Family Services of Greater Vancouver helped secure a three-year funding commitment from the Carraresi Foundation. “It’s wonderful,” she said. “We can get this service going to
full capacity again. It will bring the Senior Peer Counselling back up to full operation. We had cut some hours to keep it going.” In addition to funding the peer counselling program, the foundation will also provide funding to restored two related programs at Century House that have been hit by funding cuts. Vital Connections is a counselling service that is staffed by a gerontological counsellor. It was started in 1997 in response to a gap in services for older adults who were experiencing distress
around age-related loss. Sharing Insights on Emotional Well-Being is a group program that provides a venue for open discussion about emotional health issues. Cole said the Carraresi Foundation has agreed to fund all three programs. Part of the funding arrangement includes a research component, which would see documentations about the programs published. “That’s great news and a great relief for the program,” she said. – Theresa McManus

Peer counselling: Volunteers have given 60,000 hours ◗ continued from page 11
management meetings for peer counsellors, which allows them to hone their skills and learn more about aging after completing their initial training. Volunteer training lasted 18 months when the program first began, but it’s since been reduced by half. Dot Josey, a member of the original graduating class of senior peer counsellors in 1987, has been active in the program for 25 years. As part of her training, she soon learned one of the first rules of seniors peer counselling: don’t give advice. Josey said the biggest reward of being a senior peer counsellor has been seeing a smile and getting a thank you from a client. Macdonald said peer counsellors may be overwhelmed when they first start volunteering, but they soon hit their stride. “We meet every Wednesday. For one hour there is teaching, for an hour there is
review of clients. It is very confidential,” Macdonald said, noting the first names of clients aren’t even shared with fellow counsellors. “We think confidentiality is probably the one gift we can give. Second, it is listening.” Macdonald noted that listening means sitting as a person wrestles with their feelings, rather than giving them the answers to their problems. She said a senior peer counsellor can be a “lifeline” to seniors in distress. Josey recalled coming into Century House one day after a particularly successful promotion of the program and being told she had a new client – but all the meeting rooms were being used. “There was absolutely no where to go quiet with a client. They got two chairs and they cleared a broom closet,” she said. “He didn’t seem to mind. This was a first experience for him and he was anxious to
get it over with.” Through its 25-year history, the senior peer counselling program has helped 1,200 people, and its volunteers have contributed 60,000 hours of their time. In addition to helping seniors who are experiencing a difficult time, the peer counsellors are also able to connect them with other community resources they may not be aware of – resources that could make a huge difference in a person’s life. Because the peer counsellors’ work can be emotionally draining, the volunteers have found ways to have fun and lighten the mood, whether it’s doing an Easter bonnet parade or holding a potluck meal. Seniors’ peer counselling wasn’t a wellknown concept when it was got underway in New Westminster in 1987 so Century House teamed up with students at the B.C Institute of Technology that year to produce a video that was distributed across
Canada. Organizers also spread the word about the program by making presentations at various conventions related to seniors and aging. Petty said one of the early decisions was to strike an advisory board, which would allow the program to connect to other community services. She said that board enabled the program to know what was happening in the community, and to ensure the community knew about the program. “That group really played some important roles for us in the community,” Barkwill agreed. “We came under some funding challenges. We also had some great accomplishments.” Petty credited the strong support of Century House and the City of New Westminster for helping to keep the program going for 25 years. www.twitter.com/TheresaMcManus

About KIDS
How to prepare kids for a visit to the doctor PARENTING TODAY KATHY LYNN
I
t’s time to take your preschooler to the doctor. It may be for a checkup, to handle some medical problem such as a pesky rash or sore throat, or it may be time for a vaccination. Although they have likely had a number of visits to the doctor when they were babies, they probably don’t remember them, so this may be the first time they’re truly aware of where they’re going. And they’re wondering what is going to happen. Buy or borrow a child’s doctor kit so that they can become familiar with some of the instruments the doctor may use. Let them play with the kit using a doll or stuffed toy
as the patient. While they play, you can explain to them what each instrument is for, how the doctor uses it and why. If you haven’t time for that, go online and find pictures to show them. Kids are naturally curious, and they will love to learn all about his or her doctor visit and how the doctor can find out all kinds of neat things. Go to the library and take a look at some books about visits to the doctor. If they’re also curious about how bodies work, find some books to answer their questions. Librarians are marvelous sources of information so simply ask them to help you find the books that will work for your child. If you are matter-of-fact about a trip to the doctor, your child will likely have the same response. For example, if your child is going to get a shot, be honest with them. Tell them that the doctor or nurse is going to be giving them a needle. Explain
the process and be honest. Tell them that it will pinch and that their arms might be a bit sore or itchy afterwards. But assure them that you know he can handle it. It would be nice to believe that you will be able to book an appointment that doesn’t interfere with meal or nap times, but let’s face it, that’s not going to happen. So how do you cope? On top of that, there will be waits in both the waiting room and again in the examination room. So come prepared. Before you leave the house, phone and ask how the day is going at the doctor’s office. If they tell you the doctor is running 30 minutes late, suggest to them that you will arrive later. If at all possible, make sure your child has some exercise before you arrive. Stop at a park on the way to your appointment to let them run off some of this energy. That way they can handle the wait to see the
doctor. Bring food if your appointment is going to interfere with a meal or snack time. Actually, bring food no matter when you need to be there. There is nothing like a snack to tone down the behaviour of an antsy child. Also bring toys or
books to entertain them while you wait. Even if you know there are toys at the office, it could be that other kids got there first, and there’s nothing to play with or nothing that interests them. It’s always better to have more than you need. If they’re at all concerned or tend to be ner-
vous with new people, bring their favourite lovey so they have something to soothe them and hold them as much as possible during the exam. With a little planning, a trip to the doctor can be simple and fun. Reach Kathy Lynn through her website, www. ParentingToday.ca

Filmmakers Nimisha Mukerji and Philip Lyall were recently invited by the Oprah Winfrey Network to attend the Sundance Festival and promote the launch of their documentary on Oprah’s new network in the spring. “I didn’t think we’d

We talked with her about our film and about reaching American audiences.” Nimisha noted that Oprah’s support will give a huge boost to Eva’s work promoting organ donation. “Oprah is passionate about the cause of organ donation, and having her support this film will make all the difference,” Nimisha said in the release. 65_RedRoses, as everyone likely knows by now, centres around New Westminster’s own Eva Markvoort, a former Miss New Westminster who
died in March last year after a lifelong fight against cystic fibrosis. The documentary looks at the life of the young woman who, at 23, needed a double lung transplant to live and who forged an online friendship with two American girls who also had cystic fibrosis. “Eva would have been so excited by this broadcast, and she would be even more thrilled to realize that this really will be the launch of the #4Eva movement for organ donation she dreamed of,” Philip said. The directors have been working with B.C. Transplant, Force Four Entertainment and Hello
Cool World to build a social media campaign around the film. Hello Cool World – known for social media campaigns such as the recent LACE campaign for the B.C. Cancer Agency– has also become the film’s distributor and is taking a “fair trade” approach to their work. “We’re putting our profits back into the #4Eva movement,” said Colette Gunson, the company’s director of distribution. “Our style of ‘fair trade’ distribution will be to give a fair return to filmmakers but use our share of the profit to sustain the movement.” In the works is a study

Burnaby turning ice dance central BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com
When Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers first starred in the 1937 musical Shall We Dance, who could have forseen what impact those three little words would have in the world of sport and entertainment. Shall We Dance has since been used as the title for a 1996 Japanese film about ballroom dancing. Decades before it coined a popular song by the award-winning team of Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein II from the musical The King and I, and most recently is the name of a current reality TV series in the Philippines. Now in Burnaby, it is arguably the best way to describe the growing success of ice dance teams in the city at the 8Rinks Centre of Excellence. Two Burnaby skaters, Nicole Orford and Zhao Kai Pang, won separate Skate Canada national ice dance titles as part of a growing number of successful pairings under former Olympians turned coaches Aaron Lowe and Megan Wing. Orford, an 18-year-old Moscrop Secondary grad, won the junior ice dance title with new partner Thomas Williams at the junior nationals in Victoria last week. Pang, along with longtime partner Madeline Edwards, shared a third national title together with a record-breaking novice ice dance title. The two successful pairings are not alone. Orford and Williams were pushed by training mates Larissa Van As and Troy Shindle of Burnaby, who placed eighth at the recent junior nationals. Pang, who is a current Grade 11 student at Moscrop, and Edwards had even more company at the top of the novice division. Runners-up Noa Bruser and Timothy Lum of Burnaby also train under Lowe and Wing, as do Shane Firus and Burnaby’s Caelen Dalmer. Lowe and Wing also coach Tarrah Harvey and Keith Gagnon, who finished fifth at this year’s senior nationals. Together the up-and-coming teams make a formidable argument for calling Burnaby the

dance. We just have to keep producing,” said Lowe. A common thread that seems to tie all the skaters together is
10-time Canadian championship medallists Lowe and Wing. Lowe believes that a measure of the ice dance teams’ success comes from being able to communicate just “what it takes to get to the top.” The other half comes from B.C. Centre of Excellence skating director Joanne McLeod, who helps with ice times and creating schedules that work for everyone, added Lowe. What results is a lot of give and take from both sides. “Just working together with the parents and skaters is instrumental in part to their success,” Lowe said. Orford wanted to remain in junior another year when her former partner aged up to senior last season. The match with Williams has worked well for both skaters, who have now won two Canadian dance titles and placed third in a junior Grand Prix assignment in England in four short months. “I guess winning (a national junior title) reinforces the belief that we’re capable of it. We just want more and to compete for it,” Orford said. “Next year when we’re seniors, we have so much work to cover to get there. We’re hoping to improve next year as well. We want to get our senior careers off on a good note.” Lowe also likes the initial pairing. “They both want it,” he said. “They both have a strong work ethic, they’re both very stylish and she’s very expressive. And they’re both super strong skaters with amazing speed, as well as great qualities and strengths as a team.” The dance duo will get an opportunity to test themselves on the world stage next month when they skate at the junior world championships from Feb. 28 to March 6 in South Korea. Pang and Edwards also have some work cut out for themselves when they step up to junior, despite setting a Canadian novice dance record with their winning 96.75-point score at the recent nationals. “We’re going to have to work on pushing on (getting faster) and ◗Skating Page 20
Former junior ’Bellie name Laker lax coach BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com
Former New Westminster junior allstar sniper John Wilson was named the new head coach of the Burnaby Lakers junior A lacrosse club Saturday. Wilson, a 1990 Western Lacrosse Association rook-
ie of the year, will coach alongside new assistant Stu Watson. "I'm very excited. It was a call out of the blue," said Wilson, who was an assistant with the senior Thunder in Langley two seasons ago. Wilson, a three-time junior all-star with New Westminster, scored 186
goals and 423 points in 105 junior A games in his career. Wilson also spent 15 seasons in the WLA with both Burnaby and Coquitlam, where he earned a second Mann Cup ring with the Adanacs in 2001. During his playing days, Wilson tallied 388 goals in league and play-
offs and amassed just eight points shy of 1,000 in his career. "We're looking for athleticism, fitness and discipline, and solid team defence," said Wilson. "We just have to get everyone buying into the system." Wilson hopes to rekindle the pride in the junior Lakers that brought five
Minto Cups to the city, including an unprecedented 11 straight appearances in the Canadian junior A final. "We want to get the franchise back to that level," said Wilson, who hopes to meet with returning players this week to ◗Coach Page 21
Rookie guard comes to bloom BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com
Spring has blossomed early for Simon Fraser University freshman guard Kia Van Laare. The New Westminster Secondary grad led the varsity women’s basketball team in scoring for a second straight game, netting 20 points in the Clan’s 7463 win over the Central Washington Wildcats at home on Jan. 27. Van Laare shot fivefor-seven from beyond the arc, while Nayo RaincockEkunwe added 19 points and 17 rebounds to help pace SFU to its second straight win in the NCAA Great Northwest conference. “We started the season as a very young team, it’s really been a learning process building on team play and focusing on improving our rebounding,” said Van Laare in an SFU media release. “Things have really been coming together for us. We’ve really been playing as a team and gaining momentum and confidence.” On Saturday, SFU led Northwest Nazarene by as many as 15 points, but eventually fell 78-70 to the Crusaders at home. The loss snapped the Clan’s two-game win streak. “We let them get back into the game after having a good start. We had a limited amount of players for tonight as well, and showed our youthfulness towards the end of the game,” said SFU head coach Bruce Langford in the release. Raincock-Ekunwe scored a game-high 27 points for the Clan. The Clan bounced out to a 21-6 lead early in the contest, but the Crusaders roared back to keep the contest close after that. Northwest Nazarene led 40-36 at halftime. In the second half, Van Laare gave SFU a brief lead at 56-55 with a clutch threepointer. After a seven-point Crusader run, RaincockEkunwe helped shave the deficit to just three points with a three-point play later in the game. SFU played with just seven players.

◗ HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
Young Hyacks showing big, big improvement BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com
The super young New Westminster Hyack girls are ready for the big stage. The honourable mention AAA girls’ basketball team gave notice that they’re not the pusharound they were at the start of the high school season, finishing runner-up at last weekend’s tournament in Maple Ridge. At the tourney, New Westminster upset No. 15ranked Gleneagle 63-58 behind a 32-point offering from team leader Ariana Sider. Junior shooting guard Meriam Ali chipped in with 15 points. Later in the tourney, Ali led the Hyacks with a team-high 24 points in a 7534 walloping over Walnut Grove. In the tournament final, the Hyacks were edged 7066 by their No. 9-ranked hosts. “We played the last minute to give ourselves a chance to win,” said head coach Doug Woodward,
who has shaped the seniorless side into a cohesive unit. “They’re getting to understand the system better. But we can still be a lot better.” New Westminster gave a further glimpse of their improvement to date with a positive outing against No. 10 Centennial Centaurs. Although the final score was 95-76 to the Centaurs, New Westminster was in it until the end. Leading 12-3 early in the first quarter, the Hyacks held the lead until the final minute of the first half. Centennial opened up a nine-point lead in the third quarter, but the Hyacks battled back to within a deuce on junior Natasha Lazecki’s third three-pointer of the game. The Hyacks scored 23 points in the third quarter to keep the contest close. But they exhausted their tank in the final frame. “Yes, I feel like we’re ready,” said Ali after the game. “But there’s still room for improvement, a lot of improvement. We just have to focus more on

defence.” Defence is something Woodward will have to quickly address with the playoffs looming close on the horizon. Centennial’s Shayna Litman and Cassandra Sparvier were difficult for the smaller Hyacks to stop, scoring game-high 31 and 24 points, respectively, many coming on secondchance opportunities. Sider led the Hyacks with 29 points, while Ali and Grade 11 forward Jettie McLaughlin, added 11 and 13 points piece. The prize awaiting the Burnaby/NewWestminster playoff champion is a No. 5 berth into the Crehan Cup tournament, where there are five berths into the provincials up for grabs, including two wild cards. “The way we play, we have a shot (at a Lower Mainland berth),” said Woodward. “It’s better, but I see so much. Everything we’re doing is for next year.” The high school district playoffs tip off the week of Feb. 15.

obviously improving our technique and presence on the ice,” Pang said. The former juvenile and pre-novice national champions will also be looking to earn an international assignment when they take the step up. “They’ve grown together physically and mentally. They’re friends both on and off the ice, and it just shows,” added Lowe. The championship aura that permeates the centre, augers well for the future of dance teams in Burnaby, who often train together in a group setting. “We sort of push each other and see what the others are doing and make improvements,” Pang added. “We motivate each other to keep pushing.” And that just might be the design of the Lowe/ Wing approach to coaching. Together Lowe and Wing pushed for 11 years to get to five world championships. It’s not a stretch to think that in another 11 years, a Burnaby skater might also reach that lofty goal.

SUDOKU Fun By The Numbers
Like puzzles? Then you'll love Sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your Sudoku savvy to the test!
SUDOKU
Fun By The Numbers
Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
