It’s one of the few times when Lori Watt was happy to hear that after 13 years as a CUPE employee, she still inhabits a “relatively low level” job. Watt has been accused by a local parent of being in a conflict of interest position with her day job as a CUPE employee and her elected position as a three-term New Westminster school trustee. Watt released the legal opinion from lawyer Jonathan Baker dated Feb. 4 that states: “In my opinion, a court would consider the relationship between your position as a school trustee and either CUPE or COPE to not result in a conflict. Any pecuniary interest would likely be considered by a court to be remote and insignificant.” Watt personally commissioned the legal opinion after local parent Patrick O’Connor got his own legal opinion stating Watt was in a conflict. O’Connor started circulating a legal opinion dated Jan. 24, 2011 from Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP partner Roy W. Millen about a perceived conflict-of-interest situation involving Watt. O’Connor asked for the opinion because he believes Watt, as an employee at CUPE B.C.’s Burnaby head office, is in a potential conflict because she has the ability to vote on two matters: the approval of a new collective agreement with CUPE Local 409 and a motion to ban bottled ◗Watt Page 3

Baker’s opinion differs from Millen’s in the conclusions because, as Baker states, “the assumed facts are different.” In particular, Baker said that Watt’s “employment with CUPE is relatively low level and in no way related to the collective bargaining agreement. Therefore in my opinion you are not in conflict of interest by virtue of that position under sections 55 or 56 of the Public School Act. “As a member of CUPE there is no direct or indirect relationship to collective bargaining with the school board. “You are not in a conflict over the bottled water issue.” Baker’s opinion is based on 15 facts and assumptions that Watt provided him. Watt was relieved with Baker’s opinion. “The reason I got the opinion in the first place is because a member of the public commissioned his own legal opinion,” said Watt. “I thought it was prudent that I get my own legal opinion. “I never believed myself to be in a conflict. The School Act’s pretty clear. I don’t believe I’m in a conflict.” Watt, said there was one thing in Baker’s opinion that made her smile. “It’s a bit of an ouch to hear that I’m just a low-level employee,” said the 13-year CUPE veteran. Watt said she hopes that with Baker’s opinion, the conflict-of-interest saga is now over. That doesn’t appear to be the case, because when O’Connor e-mailed his thoughts to the press on Monday afternoon. “I have now had an opportunity to review the legal opinion trustee Lori Watt received from Jonathan Baker and it seems to fall short of fully recognizing the issue,” writes O’Connor. “It also seems to me that Lori Watt may not have apprised Mr. Baker of all the facts, particularly those relating to candidate endorsement and to the full nature and extent of CUPE’s campaign efforts against the bottled water industry. O’Connor remains firm in his beliefs: “I am continuing the review Lori Watt’s legal opinion. But nothing has changed from my perspective. I have complete confidence in the legal opinion I received and the facts that it is based upon.” O’Connor’s legal opinion, dated Jan. 24, 2011, has Millen’s legal opinion that “Ms. Watt would be in a conflict of interest in respect of both matters due to her employment. ... If Ms. Watt votes on either matter, a court could remove her from office.” In the legal opinion, Millen bases his findings on six relevant facts that were provided to him by O’Connor, but he adds the footnote that “if any of these facts are inaccurate or change, please advise us promptly as our opinion may also change.”

River Market is hard at work trying to find the right tenants for its riverfront space. Julie Ramirez, community services manager for River Market, said 80 per cent of the space in the market is leased. Businesses now operating at the River Market are the Paddlewheeler Pub, Tiny, Great Wall Tea, Donald’s Market, the Vancouver Circus School, Pedagogy Toys and Bloom Art Studio. Make Incubator Kitchen and Orlando’s catering are expected to open soon and Crepe Des Amis is set to open in April. “Nothing that we can officially announce,” Ramirez said about other tenants. “We are in deep discussions with a number of potential tenants.” Ramirez said she couldn’t speculate when River Market would be 100 per cent

filled. “The big focus now is the lower level, primarily the food hall area,” she said. That area – also known as the ‘eat now’ area – will provide space for smaller-sized restaurants. “It’s right off the boardwalk,” Ramirez said. “We are referring to it as the food hall.” James Crosty, president of the Quayside Community Board, is pleased that new tenants are being announced for the market. In reference to the 80 per cent leased figure, he noted that Donald’s Market, the Vancouver Circus School, the Paddlewheeler Pub and the administration offices take up quite a bit of floor space in the building. “There is a certain amount of impatience that is starting to set in to the community. They want services,” he said. “Impatience is really the way to sum it up. People really want to get going there, they want to be part of it.” Crosty said Donald’s Market has been well received by local residents, but people want more services. He said 4,600

people live at the Quay and many of them want to be able to walk to local services. “It’s going to be a great space,” he said about the market. “That is what people want to have happen. It is never soon enough.” Lila Wood of the New Westminster Downtown Residents Association said many downtown residents love Donald’s Market, which is the market’s anchor tenant. They’re also looking forward to other retailers opening in the market. “It’s been empty for too long,” she said. “It is handy to have a nice place to shop downtown.” River Market has created a vision its called Food 360, which would include an independent grocery store focusing on local and organic foods, specialty food vendors, onsite food processors, restaurants, a cooking school, and food festivals. River Market will be taking part in the May 2011 multicultural festival that’s been hosted by the Downtown New Westminster Business Improvement Society since 2003.

Motoring with a new message

There’ll be no mistaking it when Const. Jackie Suchodolski is around New Westminster Secondary School, thanks to the slick new look of the community services school liaison van. New Westminster Police Service recently rebranded the van Suchodolski uses to visit schools in the city. The van has been shrinkwrapped with colourful decals depicting New Westminster police in action, including a motorcycle officer, K-9 unit and marine unit. “The motivation for the wrapping was to assist us in getting our message out to young people in the community. The van underscores our values of safety, service and dedication to the community,” said Sgt. Gary Weishaar in an e-mail to The Record. Weishaar added the van is pretty easy on the eyes as well. “It is colourful yet professional and respectful in its presentation. I like to call it our ‘Van-Gogh,’” Weishaar said, pun very much intended. Suchodolski said the redesigned van has been a hit with New West Secondary students, and she has plans to park it at various places around the school to “keep them guessing.” Suchodolski’s role as youth liaison officer is to bridge the gap between the police and youth. – By Brent Richter, reporter

Two classes at Lord Kelvin Elementary that had to be moved after staff reported “the faint smell of natural gas” are scheduled to return to their regular rooms by the end of this week. A memo dated Feb. 3 and circulated to parents stated that one class had to be moved to one of the school’s portables and another to the school library after staff reported the gas smell. “Maintenance staff subsequently linked the odour to a failed ignition component in the air handling unit,” said the memo sent by assistant superintendent Al Balanuik. “The odour that was detected is associated with an additive to natural gas intended to aid detection. It does not indicate unsafe exposure. … There was no gas leak, and carbon monoxide levels were safe.” Balanuik also indicated in the memo that air quality monitoring would continue, with an external firm, Chris Collette and Associates, in charge of measuring the air quality between Feb. 7 and 11. Balanuik said Terasen Gas officials also inspected the school to make sure there were no leaks.

A New Westminster-based animal welfare group is among those outraged over the slaughter of roughly 100 sled dogs in Whistler. The Vancouver Sun reported last week that Bob Fawcett, the employee of Outdoor Adventures Whistler responsible for the gruesome cull involving panicked dogs being shot and having their throats slit, had previously attempted to have some of the dogs adopted. This came as news to Cheryl Rogers, president of the Pacific Volunteer Education and Assistance Team for Animals (VEATA), a local charity that provides emergency or temporary housing for animals in need. She says that none of the similar animal rescue organizations she’s been in touch with since the story broke say they’d been asked for assistance before the April 2010 cull. “Sled dogs can be problematic, but there is a group in Creston called PAWS that does a lot with sled dogs,” said Rogers. “If somebody came to the rescue community and said ‘I have a 100 sled dogs, can you take them?,’ realistically, the answer would be no, but if someone had said ‘can you work with me and try and help these dogs over time’, we would have been able to save a number of them.” Fawcett reportedly approached the BC SPCA on two separate occasions asking for help in finding adoptive homes for some of the company’s dogs, but was told the animals were unadoptable.

Senior animal protection officer Eileen Drever confirmed she was contacted last spring by Fawcett, but can’t recall if it was in April or May, adding she was unaware the dogs would be put down otherwise. “[The employee] didn’t advise me he was going to kill any dogs. He was looking to find homes. I spoke to an animal behaviourist who is also a vet and she spoke with an expert in the [United] States who said [the sled dogs] weren’t adoptable,” said Drever. “If we had any indication they would have been executed we absolutely would have done something.” Rogers pointed out that Fawcett could have tried other rescue groups as well. “The SPCA aren’t the only ones that are out there,” she said. “There are certain rescue organizations that specialize in certain breeds of dogs, such as malamutes, and to the best of our knowledge none were approached.” Lynn Ray, a secretary and volunteer for PAWS, told The Record in an e-mail that she was unaware of any contact between her organization and Fawcett, who is believed to be in hiding after receiving death threats and was not available for comment. “Within the rescue community, because we’re small and independent and have a limited amount of available foster homes, how much we would have been able to help, I don’t know,” said Rogers. “But not even to be given a chance?” Rogers added she hopes the tragedy will result in stiffer legislation protecting animals from cruelty. - with files from The Vancouver Sun

society when it comes to gender stereotypes. But, here’s the point: If anyone is picked on for any reason to do with their identity – any discrimination on that basis is simply unacceptable. There was a time when Chinese

immigrants faced immense discrimination. There was a time when women were allowed to be paid much less than men for doing the same job. There was a time when gays and lesbians were openly discriminated against in the workforce and on the job. All of those obvious wrongs have been righted – but not without battles – some protracted ones. We hope the Senate passes the bill – it is the right thing to do.

Leadership races bring excitement IN THE HOUSE KEITH BALDREY

he B.C. Liberals have done the smart thing and changed the way of choosing their next leader to ensure all regions of this diverse province have a say in the matter. Unfortunately, it appears the NDP won’t be doing that and instead will be using the one member-one vote method, which was once trendy but which now can create more problems than it solves. The way of choosing political leaders has varied over the years. For decades, the preferred option was a delegated convention, which saw people – often committed party loyalists and activists – elected by fellow party members in their home ridings to attend a convention to vote for a new leader. I’ve had the good fortune to have attended several exciting – even historic – delegated leadership conventions over the years, and frankly they can be riveting events. I covered the 1983 Progressive Conservative convention in Ottawa, where Brian Mulroney defeated Joe Clark in an electrifying contest that captivated the nation (I was working for the old and now defunct

Columbian newspaper, based in New Westminster). On the last ballot, as it became apparent Clark was about to lose power, I noticed everyone had pretty much deserted him. He sat with a knot of supporters in the stands of the old civic arena. I went up and sat just behind him and watched the bedlam below as Mulroney took over his party. A year later, the B.C NDP met in the PNE Agrodome to pick a successor to Dave Barrett. It went five ballots, before an obscure Vancouver Island MLA – Bob Skelly – emerged the winner because two top candidates (Dave Vickers and Bill King) simply could not support each other, and so allowed an unexceptional candidate to sneak up the middle. I have particular fondness for that convention because I won the media pool (along with fellow Vancouver Sun reporter Tom Barrett), as we were the only ones to foresee the unlikely Skelly victory. But the greatest leadership convention in B.C. history may well have been the 1986 convention in Whistler, where Bill Vander Zalm was picked to succeed Bill Bennett as leader of the Social Credit party. There were 12 candidates in that race, which meant 12 hospitality tents, 12 open bars and 12 barbecues open for almost a week at the end of July. Vander Zalm was picked after several ballots in the sweltering convention centre, and the seeds of the

Civic centre rezoning under fire

Dear Editor:

Am I just seeing things? I thought the proposed New Westminster civic

centre had originated from the idea that a multiuse “civic” building; theatre, museum, convention center and liquor licence, were going to draw Metro Vancouver and beyond to New Westminster’s downtown. (Really?) The city was to act as the developer, but having no land, they needed to expropriate – any land developer’s wildest dream. The properties were bought at a steal (if the rezoning goes through) and assembled as a 0.8-acre parcel. We were told an 80,000-square-foot civic building, built with $35 million earmarked by the provincial government, was to sit on the land. However, the “council developers” realized, or it was suggested, they had a gold mine of a property, that had even more potential. So, the “council developers” got a private partner. After a review process of offers, voila, a developer – Uptown. We were told Uptown had made a juicy ◗Centre Page 7

proposal to the “council developers,” that incorporated a proposed 80,000-sq.-ft. civic centre and 100,000 sq. ft. of office plus some bonuses. “Council developers” realized, it was suggested, “the city owns a street dividing the parcel of land,” so they turned the street into more property for the project and then another, voila, one-acre parcel. Three months later, the plans and extra land are presented, and we have a 93,000-sq.-ft. civic centre and 130,000 sq. ft. of office. (A bonus of 30,000 sq. ft. for Uptown.) Some councillors were amazed that a proposed square box could look so good, but none of them at the time realized this modern and cutting-edge design ain’t no $35-million centre. Architecture of that nature requires great details and even greater amounts of money. That civic centre is closer to $45 million, baby! (That is soft, hard and outfitting costs, and, of course, LEED certification – gold, I hope.) The “council developers” realized they need some extra money. Maybe Uptown could help, but how? Rezoning! A rezoning which includes a 220-foot height limit, floorspace ratio of 7.0, plus amenity bonuses, and you can build whatever you want except maybe a nuclear plant and a few other industrial items. If this rezoning goes through, Uptown will potentially gain another 76,000 sq. ft. in building space, which would be in addition to the already extra 30,000 sq. ft. A minimum of five floors could be added to Uptown’s office space, and the bonus residential square footage could net a developer an additional $8 to 12 million from this rezoning. Was this the city’s plan all along?

Tories are twisting reality Dear Editor:

Re: It’s not ‘scare tactics,’ Letters to the editor, The Record, Feb. 12. It appears that Paul Forseth, the Conservative candidate for Burnaby-New Westminster, is getting into election mode. The Conservatives seem especially adept at spinning reality 180 degrees especially when they are engineering an election. Take Forseth’s recent claim that “the Conservatives neither want an election nor will provoke one. The focus is on ensuring that the economic recovery is maintained.” If they don’t want an election, they have to cooperate with other parties to achieve majority support, otherwise the government falls. The present incarnation of the Conservative Party finds this very difficult to do and has been trying to provoke an election for years. Harper is after that elusive majority and will not be satisfied until he gets it. With the Conservatives’ instrumental role in the introduction of the HST in B.C., $2 billion in taxes have been shifted from corporations to consumers. Their caving in on the Softwood Lumber Agreement has cost the country billions, and resulted in about 50,000 lost jobs. The deficit has jumped by 50 per cent since they took power, and they are still wanting to give huge reductions to already profitable corporations and the rich. These are just a few examples that have me wondering if Harper’s “focus” on the economy is necessarily a good thing.

Campbell was the first B.C. leader chosen by the one member-one vote system, and frankly it was a rather lifeless, limp affair. The NDP recently made the switch to the same system, and one has to wonder whether the party is having second thoughts. While there were certainly flaws with the delegated system (i.e.

the disastrous choice of Skelly), the fact is it was a system that could breath enormous energy and excitement into a political party. By contrast, the one member-one vote system focuses on the initial excitement of signing up members but doesn’t necessarily sustain that excitement (or even the commitment to the party of those who take part in mass sign-ups). As well, the system is open to manipulation, as one particular community or constituency can swamp everyone else through mass sign-ups. And the odds of fraud being committed may increase with so many people taking out membership forms.

By moving to a regional, weighted system – in which all party members do indeed get to cast a ballot, but in which that ballot is counted at the local (riding) level and not as part of a provincewide pool – the B.C. Liberals have taken a significant step away from the pure one member-one vote system, and have inched closer to the old delegate system. Hopefully, the NDP will eventually get to the same spot. The pendulum may be actually be swinging back to the old days, which in this case may be a rare bit of good news for our political system. Council has approved $175,000 to deconstruct the building at 801 Columbia St., which is across the street from the future civic centre site. A staff report noted that the building has been vacant since December, which has generated

some complaints from neighbours about the safety and security of the area. The City of New Westminster had purchased the Kyoto building at the foot of Eighth Street as a possible home for the civic centre. The city had launched expropriation proceedings to acquire the site, but was unable to reach an agreement with the former owner. – By Theresa McManus, reporter

Vancity helps out women

he Julien House Society’s New Westminster House recovery centre for women will be able continue sending its graduates for training thanks to a $10,000 grant from Vancity. Susan Hogarth, development assistant for the society, said the grant is used to send graduates from the program who have been clean for one year and want to work for the society for classes in first aid, counselling, small business management and fundraising at Vancouver Community College and the British Columbia Institute of Technology. The society was one of seven non-profit organizations to receive a grant from Vancity. The bank awards grants three times a year through its Shared Success program, which sends some Vancity profits to member organizations that work to reduce poverty, build community investment and combat climate change.

New members for BIA

The Downtown New Westminster Business Improvement Area (BIA) has kicked off 2011 with its annual general meeting and the election of five new board members on Wednesday night. New to the board are Michael Isman, Lisa Deacon, Vikas Kaushal, Ben Keil and Sev Morin. Board member William Shannon said the board will be meeting in the coming week to get to know one another and then hold executive and committee elections towards the end of the month. Shannon said the highlight of the evening was a presentation from Mayor Wayne Wright on development plans expected to move forward in downtown New West in 2011 including the Degelder building, civic centre and Trapp block, which has come out of two years of dormancy.

John Gray, Daniel McLaren and Travis Cote, the trio behind the new business, largely operate out of Gray’s home in New West and Wi-Fi enabled coffee shops, but they are hoping the mentions being generated by their innovative Mentionmap program, which provides a visual representation of Twitter account activity, will soon lead to bigger and better things. “It was just a fun project, something (McLaren) hacked together to amuse himself over a weekend in December 2009, but we found that in the past six months, some of the buzz, some of the traction that we’re getting through the tool is really quite thrilling,” said Gray after calling The Record from a Waves outlet in Vancouver. “I was just looking at our Google analytics, and we had almost 81,000 users in the past month check out Mentionmap. Considering we’re not doing any advertising or getting written up in TechCrunch or anything like that, it’s not bad for three humble little B.C. guys.” Mentionmap works a bit like an interactive flow chart or, as the name suggests, a map of who and what people mention. Simply plug

in a username – your own or someone like, say, @barackobama, @ ladygaga or even the highly followable @flematic – and you instantly get a free visual interface based on that person’s recent Twitter activity. “Basically, it’s a Flash-based application for digital graph visualizations,” said Gray, the self-described “business guy” who leaves the heavy lifting of creating code to his two more computer-savvy partners. Mentionmap loads each user’s last 100 tweets and shows the people and hashtags they talked about the most. The data is displayed using Constellation Framework, a graph visualization system where mentions become connections and discussions between multiple users emerge as clusters. The user-friendly interface also lets users drag the canvas in order to pan, zoom in and out, auto-centre and search. Users can also simply retrace their steps using the history bar. ◗App Page 14

The City of New Westminster’s future civic centre will provide “significant” employment benefits to the community. That’s the verdict of G.P. Rollo and Associates, which was hired by the city to identify and quantify the various economic benefits, both direct and spinoff, related to the proposed civic centre and office tower. The consultant estimates that the project will create 265 jobs in the planning and construction phase, and more jobs once the civic centre and office tower are operational. “The office component of the project is projected to bring approximately 525 new fulltime equivalent employment opportunities to the city, a 9.2 per cent increase to the downtown employment base and a two per cent increase to the city’s overall employment base,” said the consultant’s report. A city staff report accompanying the consultant’s assessment stated that the multi-use civic facility and office tower development may also play an integral role in the creation of an “activity precinct” that will continue to bring vitality to the area and add to the revitalization momentum

of the downtown. The report said the variety of programs, productions, educational activities and retail potential of the project will bring residents and visitors to the downtown. “Those who come to see an art display, a theatre performance, participate in a conference or attend a class will be more likely to explore the other activity clusters (e.g. River Market), creating a critical mass that will in turn bring more activity and business to the area,” said the staff report. Mayor Wayne Wright said the civic centre will become a focal point for the downtown. “We are using experts to give us the numbers,” he said. “We are going through them systematically. The biggest thing is this has to be a contributor to the social fabric, but it also has to be a contributor of revenues.” In addition to creating jobs, the consultant’s report indicated that employees of the civic centre, the restaurant that will be located in the building and the office building being built by a developer on top of the civic centre would provide “significant” ongoing employment-generating benefits in the community. People who attend conferences or theatre productions at the civic centre are also anticipated to contribute to the local economy. The consultant pointed out that conference centres can be key drivers of the community and provide a boon to the hospitality industry, suppliers and all the workers they employ. “Delegates often fill local hotel rooms during shoulder seasons and mid-week when other patronage is low,” said the consultant’s assessment. “Conferences tend to be booked well in advance, and are thus less susceptible to short-term economic fluctuation.” It’s estimated that conference delegates spend $355 to $398 daily, which includes the cost of accommodation and transportation. The consultant also reported that performing arts venues have a significant economic impact on their host communities. It noted that a typical theatre attendee is estimated to spend about $26 on items above the cost of admission, including gifts and souvenirs, parking, meals, refreshments, child care and miscellaneous retail items. Tej Kainth, Tourism New Westminster’s marketing and visitor centre coordinator, said people who are attending conferences often attend pre- and post-conferences, which would potentially extend the time they spend in the city. “The civic center has created a destination. It has created a hub,” she said. “This

hub is definitely going to branch out into other areas of the downtown corridor.” Kainth believes the civic centre will benefit existing businesses and will encourage more businesses to open. “It is going to help shape the future of the downtown as well. I think you are going to see a lot more businesses coming in. I would expect to see more restaurants, more entertainment-type businesses,” she said. “When people are on conventions, they are not only there to meet with colleagues, they are there to socialize.” Wright said there are numerous occasions when local groups have to hold larger events outside the city because New Westminster doesn’t have space large enough to host those gatherings. “We are limited here,” he said. “As we grow, these societies get bigger. They want to put on better events.” Kainth believes the conference space will have a “huge” impact on the downtown, as there are few convention centre spaces in Metro Vancouver, other than the convention centre in Vancouver and some hotel facilities in various cities. She said it would provide enough space to accommodate up to 500 people at a facility located beside SkyTrain. “The overall benefit to New Westminster is huge,” she said. “Downtown, and the Quay especially, will be benefiting.” Tourism New Westminster representatives are also thrilled that the city’s visitor information centre will be located on the main floor of the civic centre. “We are one of the tenants going in there. Our visitor centre will be year-round. In terms of visitor services, it will be beneficial,” Kainth said.

She proudly shows her art, which is actually many swirls of varying colours, and her mom says, “I really love looking at all the different colours in your picture.” Olivia grins. Ten-year-old Olivia is busy painting a picture. “What do you think, Mom? Can I be an artist?” And Mom replies, “Of course, darling. You can be whatever you want to be.” When our children are young, we encourage them to try anything that interests them and support them in all endeavours. They are busy little folk

involved in art, sports, science, literature, drama; the list goes on. It’s our role to let them experiment. They are trying out whatever interests them whether they have a real aptitude or not. And as long as we are supporting their interests, and not pushing them beyond endurance, are ensuring that they have balance in their lives, this is a fun, active and exciting time for children. Anything seems possible. Then they reach adolescence and it all changes. The developmental goals for teens are more focused on the reality that adulthood is now on the horizon and they need to know themselves well – this is the search for selfidentity. Teens still need parenting. As a matter of fact, they need more support and guidance as teens

than they do in their middle years. But it’s different. Letting go, allowing our teens increasing independence is not easy, but is essential if our teens are going to grow up to become capable young men and women. Helping them determine who they are, what they are good at, what they should be considering for their future is another challenge for parents. No longer is it helpful to tell Olivia that she can be what she wants to be. She is now ready to consider who she is and what that can really mean for her future. Royal City Musical Theatre is poking a little fun at itself for a fundraiser this weekend. The theatre company is presenting A Night of Twisted Broadway, a cabaret revue that spoofs the music, characters and plots of contemporary Broadway musicals. The fundraising benefit is set for Saturday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Massey Theatre. Director-choreographer Valerie Easton is leading a large cast of performers, many of whom are returning from previous Royal City Musical Theatre shows. Among those is Laura McNaught, who’s be taking the role is Ziegfield’s Favourite in the upcoming Royal City Musical Theatre production of The Will Rogers Follies. She was seen on stage at Christmastime in the Arts Club Theatre production of White Christmas. Easton noted that it’s not unusual to see

Royal City Musical Theatre alumni go on to professional theatre, and she added that supporting young, up-and-coming performers is part of the theatre company’s mission. “Royal City Musical Theatre has been in the community for 22 years,” she noted. “Our mandate is to really encourage young and emerging talent.” She pointed out that, though it’s a nonprofessional company, it produces shows of professional standard each year. “We find amazing people every year,” she said. But she admitted it’s getting tougher financially to produce large musical shows. “The Massey is a beautiful theatre,” she said, noting it’s of a size to accommodate large productions. “Large productions mean large budgets, and we need to fundraise. … A lot of grants and funding have sort of gone away.” That need for funding, of course, is a driving force behind this coming weekend’s performance. But, naturally, the company wants to entertain its audience too.

“It’s a night of comedy and fun,” Easton said. Easton noted the show will feature many favourite musical numbers – including a return of the children’s chorus from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, the Royal City Musical Theatre show from last year that grabbed an Ovation Award for outstanding community theatre production. “It’s poking fun at some of the shows we have done in the past,” she said with a laugh, noting that such favourite shows as South Pacific and The Sound of Music will be part of the twisted Broadway fun. David Berner, a former radio personality who’s now hosting a Shaw television show, will MC the event, and the Dennis Enns Trio will provide music. A silent auction will also be part of the evening’s festivities. Olympic glow still shines

The Olympics are never far from the hearts and minds of Mayor Wayne Wright and Dr. Bob McCormack. For Wright, the evidence is in his office, where one of the torches used to light the cauldron at Queen’s Park last February is prominently displayed. “The torch inspires me every day to work to the best of my ability,” said Wright. “I look at the torch, and it gives me the incentive to keep working. … Whenever things get tough, I think back to when the torch was here, and I think that was an experience of a lifetime.” McCormack is a New Westminster orthopedic surgeon who was the chief medical officer for the Canadian Olympic team last year, so his memories of last year are even more personal. “It was a great time, a tremendously worthwhile thing to do and maybe the most dramatic thing I’ve ever been involved in,” said McCormack just before he was to enter the operating room for a procedure. “I think the Games are a defining moment for Vancouver and for the region.” You can forgive McCormack for his enthusiasm, as his devotion to the Olympic movement has included stints as chief medical officer and now, a promotion to medical director for the Canadian Olympic Committee, meaning he’ll oversee the medical program and work with young doctors as they take over from him. “I’m biased because I’ve had a lifelong love affair with the Olympics,” said McCormack, a former long-distance runner who just missed qualifying for the 1976 Summer Olympics and would’ve been a member of the 1980 team if Western nations hadn’t boycot-

The Douglas College Royals lived up to great expectations at the B.C. Colleges’ Athletic Association provincial badminton championships. The defending national collegiate women moved on without dropping a single set in team and individual play, helping Douglas win a sixth straight provincial team title on Saturday at the David Lam Campus in Coquitlam. On Sunday, Canadian Colleges’ female player of the year and defending two-time national singles champion RuiLin Huang made short work of the competition in the qualifying round. Huang won all four of her singles matches, without giving up more than five points in any of the games played. However, Huang is not expected to have as easy a time at the nationals, hosted this year at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick. Huang will be up against an old nemesis from China, Sun Yang, now playing for the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. The two have met five times in the past, with Huang winning on four separate occasions. Huang will also be up against former junior Olympian Tracy Wong from Ontario. An unofficial coach’s code of conduct complaint against Burnaby South Secondary School basketball coaches will now be dealt with by the Burnaby School District. The complaint in question, emailed to B.C. High School Sports on Friday, named more than 20 student athletes who were or are currently enrolled at South, who were allegedly recruited through the South Burnaby Metro Club basketball system to play Rebels’ high school basketball. However, the school district is not recognizing the complaint as it was not processed according to

school district rules. “I think the important thing to know is there is no complaint,” acting communication manager Gillian Dusting told The Record Monday. “As far as we know, there is no complaint. But we will be talking about this internally.” The complaint in question was filed by Byrne Creek Secondary School head boys’ basketball coach and B.C. high school coach of the year Wayne Best. B.C. School Sports executive director Sue Keenan confirmed to The Record on Monday morning that she had received the complaint file. But hours after the story went public, Best was informed by Keenan that the complaint needed

to have been signed by the Byrne Creek principal to be considered official. All further communication on the issue has since been handled through the school district. “It’s been taken seriously and will be dealt with immediately,” added Dusting. “But it’s important to know that this is not condoned or signed off by the system.” But Best says he will stand by his complaint and see how it is dealt with by the school district. “Nothing in there is made up. It’s factual. It was not done with mal intent and not without trying to address it,” Best said, adding he has no plans to withdraw the complaint. “I didn’t make a mistake,” he

said. “I guess, we’ll just see where it all goes. We’ll see what happens from here.” Among those named in the complaint were some of South’s top players on the No. 1 provincially ranked AAA boys’ basketball team. Named in the complaint were South coaches Mike Bell, Randy Edwards, Jason Price and senior boys’ head coach Greg Matic, who led South to an eighth-place finish at the B.C. high school AAA provincial championships last season. NewWestminsterHyack pressure was too much for the Burnaby South Rebels in the high school girls’ basketball final Monday. The Hyacks soundly defeated South 76-45 at Massey Gym to earn the No. 1 district seeding into the upcoming Crehan Cup Lower Mainland championships. Hyack all-star Ariana Sider led all scorers with 37 points, including 11-of13 free throws. The two teams traded baskets early on but New Westminster quickly moved ahead, building a 15-6 advantage before closing the first quarter up by 14 points following a last-second three-pointer by junior forward Natasha Lazecki. Meriam Ali chipped in with a dozen points for New Westminster, while Lazecki and Grade 9 forward Amanda Zacharuk had eight points apiece for the district champions. Burnaby South all-stars Navjit Moore and Mona Saib netted eight and seven points, respectively. The Hyacks led 39-19 at half time. “We’ve learned to work together more,” said New Westminster all-star Jettie McLaughlin. “But I think we have a lot to learn, too, and going to Vancouver will help us learn.” Hyacks coach Doug Woodward believes the Hyacks have a good shot at one of four available berths into the provincial championships. “There is always an upset at the Lower Mainlands,” Woodward said. “If we get that quarter-final game versus North Shore No. 3, we’ll be in good shape for a berth.” South earned the No. 2 district berth. Burnaby Mountain defeated Bryne Creek 5242 for the No. 3 berth into the wild-card round. The Lower Mainland AAA championships begin this weekend at StevestonLondon. Quarter-final play starts on Monday.

Burnaby’s Emilio Ditrocchio is a co-headliner on the mixed martial arts card – Seeing Red II at the Red Robinson Show Theatre on Friday. The 21-year-old former Alpha Secondary School student will put his unbeaten record on the line against Rob “Wolverine” Woodcock in a West Coast featherweight title match in the co-main event at the Boulevard Casino in Coquitlam. “I’m feeling pretty good,” said Ditrocchio about his upcoming bout with Woodcock. “All my fights have been to ground, but I fought Muay Thai before, so I’m pretty confident wherever. (Woodcock) is a wrestler.” Ditrocchio is 4-0 going into Friday’s cage match, but believes this one will be his biggest test yet. He caught the fighting bug well before mixed martial arts had become a byword, dabbling in jiujitsu as more of a recreational pursuit when he was much younger. He had his first Muay Thai bout when he was 16, just to get some experience. “It’s only going uphill from now,” said Ditrocchio, who trains at Posener’s Pankration in East Vancouver. “I’m pretty young right now. I got a lot of time.”

One person close to Ditrocchio who knows something about commitment is his mother – Anna. Anna swam at a high level in her youth and her twin sister even made it to the Olympic Games. Now 56, Anna keeps fit exercising at the North Burnaby Boxing Club under coach Manny Sobral, who is promoting the 12bout card her son is fighting on. “As a mama, I’m scared to death,” said Anna, who has trained at NBBC going on seven years. “They say (MMA) is safer than boxing, but anything goes, that’s what worries me. But I’m here to support him.” Anna has no doubt also passed along good blood lines to her son. “North Burnaby is a fabulous facility. I like the intensity,” said Anna. “If I didn’t get the sweat, I don’t work out. Rob (NBBC coach Bortolazzo) tells me I keep up with the 25-yearolds.” West Coast title belts will also be on the line at lightweight and bantamweight at Seeing Red II. Muay Thai fans will also be treated to three bouts, featuring a West Coast middleweight title fight between Joe Halfar and Isak Van Borgondien. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the first fight scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tickets on sale at Ticketmaster or the Red Robinson theatre box office.

New Westminster Salmonbellie Jamie Floris was signed to a one-year pro contract with the National Lacrosse League Colorado Mammoth last week. The move filled a spot vacated by the release of five-year pro Nenad Gajic, the captain of last season’s Salmonbellies. Gajic had been slowed by injuries over the past three seasons, managing to play in just 18 games with the Mammoth since the 2009 season. Floris, who appeared in four games for Colorado in 2010, registered an assist in his first game this year with the club in an 11-6 loss to the Boston Blazers last Saturday.

U-14s looking to pip PoCo at provincials The under-14 New Westminster field lacrosse team has a Port Coquitlam hurdle to get over at this weekend’s B.C. Lacrosse provincial championships in Victoria. New West has met Port Coquitlam four times this season and is still looking for its first win against the as yet unbeaten Tri-City side. Two of the matchups resulted in similar 7-7 draws. In both tied contests against New Westminster, PoCo knotted the score in the final 10 seconds of the game. New Westminster finished in second place in the Pacific Coast league standings. They also won the Seattle Spaceneedle Shootout tournament in December.

Rookie tops in shootouts New Westminster rookie goaltender Matt Hewitt was named the first star for the Regina Pats in a 3-2 shootout win over the Medicine Hat Tigers in WHL play on Saturday. Hewitt stopped 32 shots in four periods of play, including overtime, before stopping three of four shooters in the penalty shootout in front of almost 4,000 fans at the Brandt Centre in Regina. Hewitt is currently undefeated in games going to a shootout. Hewitt leads the WHL

with six straight wins when the game has gone to a shootout. His shootout save percentage is 0.731. The 18-year-old goalie is currently 16th overall and third amongst rookies with a 0.900 save percentage in 24 league games.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins posted his 20th goal of the season and also added to his Western Hockey League-leading assists in back-to-back wins this weekend for the Red Deer Rebels.

Nugent-Hopkins’ thirdperiod goal stood up as the game-winner in a 3-0 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Saturday. Their toughest match came in the final round against Kwantlen’s Charlette Rosales and Michelle Simard. Liang and Ko swept the Kwantlen pair 21-10, 21-13. “Yeah, the ladies were expected to do what they did,” said Royals head coach Al Mawani. The men’s team received a little luck to also earn a berth to the nationals as the No. 2 doubles B.C. seed. Darren Hong and Rey Luo lost their opening match with eventual champions Pierre Tang and Chris Chung of Langara 21-10, 24-22. But later in the competition, the Langara duo helped out Douglas by defeating favoured Kwantlen in a three-set match. A win by Kwantlen would have eliminated the Royal twosome.

Hong and Luo then beat the Richmond duo 21-14, 21-16 to secure second place. “It gives us a second chance at the nationals,” Mawani said. The second-place seeding also sets the stage for a compelling men’s competition at the nationals, said Mawani. Last year, Hong along with then-teammate Alvin Lau won the provincial doubles title against Capilano but were eventually upset in the Canadian final by the then B.C. runner-up. This year, the shoe is on the other foot, said Mawani. “Maybe this is the time we’ll reverse it the other way. That’s the pattern we’re using this time around,” he said. The Douglas mixed doubles team of Darren Cho and Amy Leung failed to advance, finishing fourth in their group with a 2-3 overall record.
