Water wait? New Westminster Secondary School students and Marie-Claire Massicotte, left, and Hannah Crisp want bottled water sales banned at their school. The Grade 11 students had petitioned the school board to implement an immediate ban but superintendent John Woudzia recommended that the phasing out of bottled water won’t take place until after the new high school is built.

Students lose water fight? Recommendation: It’s status quo until three new schools are built in the city BY ALFIE LAU REPORTER alau@royalcityrecord.com

It’s a saga that’s gone on for 13 months and John Woudzia’s Tuesday report on bottled water in the school district doesn’t look like it will end the controversy. Woudzia’s four-page report, set to be voted on at Tuesday’s regular school board

meeting at the high school (after Record print deadlines), states that the district will continue making water available, both free and for payment, in its facilities. In addition, the district will look at phasing out bottled water, but only after the district completes its three current capital projects. In addition, the district would look at the implications of phasing out sweetened and caffeinated drinks as a first step in the district’s beverage waste-reduction initiative. Woudzia said he received more than 80 pieces of feedback from students, parents

and staff in the district and he spent quite some time putting together his recommendations. “The two things that I kept coming back to were choice, or the provision of options … for both tap and bottled water, and of timing, short-term versus long-term, with the district waiting until after the capital projects were completed (before) starting the phasing out of bottled water contracts.” What that means for current students at New Westminster Secondary School is that bottled water will continue to be available ◗Water Page 9

A New Westminster Police Service rookie constable is being praised following a “textbook” takedown and de-escalation in a potentially deadly incident, last week. Const. Andrew Corazza, an eight-month rookie, was facing a suspect brandishing a knife last Wednesday and was within moments of having to decide whether to use deadly force. According to police, the incident began when a man came to the front lobby of the police station around 10:45 p.m., asking for help. The man, 44, said he was experiencing emotional health issues and requested to be taken to Royal Columbian Hospital. Corazza was assigned to take the man to the hospital but things turned strange when they arrived. Sgt. Gary Weishaar said the man, after exiting the police cruiser in the hospital parking lot, stepped away from Corazza and then pulled out a large knife he had concealed in his clothing. Corazza jumped back, putting space between himself and the armed man, something officers are trained to do, unholstered his sidearm, called for backup and tried to resolve the situation. “Our police officer took out his sidearm and started giving

Uptown: Where cows once roamed

N

ew Westminster’s Uptown may now be a commercial and residential hub in the city, but it was once home to a dairy and the Hollywood Sanitarium. The history of a small section of Uptown New Westminster is the inspiration behind a new display that was unveiled this week. Uptown Property Group, owner of Westminster Centre and some surrounding buildings in the area, hired A Sense of History Research Services to provide a report about a Sixth Avenue site that was home to two heritage houses that were to be moved as part of the site’s redevelopment. “We didn’t want that information to get lost,” said Bart Slotman, vice president of the Uptown Property Group. “There were some really interesting stories that came out of that.” The History of Westminster Centre and Surrounding Area report, done by Archie and Dale Miller in 2009, has THERESA MCMANUS been forwarded to the New Westminster Public Library and the New Westminster Museum and Archives. It’s also inspired the new display in Westminster Centre. “We thought it is too interesting to be sitting on the shelf,” Slotman said of the stories contained in the report. “It grew out of that research about the two houses.” The report, and the subsequent display, highlight various aspects of the neighbourhood’s history. In the 1890s, the entire block where Westminster Centre is now located was home to an estate owned by Charles G. Major. In addition to building a beautiful home, Major also imported exotic species of trees for his estate and had many holly bushes planted there as well. The History of Westminster Centre and Surrounding Area report notes that the estate was later purchased by other owners, including Dr. James G. McKay who had been the superintendent of the Essondale Mental Hospital in Coquitlam. He started the Hollywood Sanitarium in 1919. The report states that the institution HERITAGE HAPPENINGS changed hands a Heritage Week: From Feb. 21 to number of times and 27 the city celebrates its history by was enlarged and holding a colouring contest for sturemodeled to meet the dents. It closed in 1975 and the building made way for commercial development. According to the Millers’ report, the period from 1941 to 1955 was a major period of growth for the business sector for upper Sixth Street. Woodward’s set up

The second London Drugs store was also located in the 700 block of Columbia Street.” Slotman said Westminster Centre felt the images contained in the History of Westminster Centre and Surrounding Area report needed to be told in a way that they reached out to the community. The panels, which include multiple photos, will be located on the wall in the corridor between London Drugs and Save-On Foods. Both companies have a his-

Kudos: Officer holds fire when faced with danger commands to drop the knife. He did it repeated times and the suspect kept coming forward,” Weishaar said. “Fortunately, just at the decision-making time when the officer had to decide whether to use deadly force or not, the suspect was within 15 feet and dropped the knife.” Corazza and other officers were then able to handcuff and arrest the man. He now faces charges of assault with a weapon and possession of a dangerous weapon. Weishaar said Corazza’s actions that night led to the best possible outcome in a dangerous situation. “It’s something that could have become very tragic. There’s no doubt

about it. We could have had and officer that was gravely injured and/or a suspect that was shot by a police officer,” he said. Weishaar said similar incidents are all too common and the public doesn’t always hear about them when they turn out right, but Corazza’s actions were by the book and ended the situation safely. “It’s certainly a situation that all of us police officers have to face eventually,” Wieshaar said. “We’re certainly proud of Andrew and everybody is here. It’s not too often that you’re in less than one year’s service and you have this big decision to make.” New West resident Neil Holloway

was parked outside Royal Columbian at the time of the incident and has plenty of accolades for Corazza. “I thought he was very professional the whole time he was there. He handled the situation very admirably. The guy did a tremendous job. I mean, my adrenaline was flowing and I was sitting 40 feet away in my car. I can imagine what was going through his mind,” Holloway said. Weishaar is also crediting the training Corazza received at the Justice Institute of B.C., here in New West, saying “there is no better training in all of Canada.” The suspect is identified as James Wayne Templeton. He remains in custody pending a bail hearing.

back remains the elephant in the corner. And can anyone take a budget seriously that doesn’t delve into potential HST outcomes? What is in the budget includes a high level of debt, much of it associated with capital projects brought on in the name of economic stimulation. Most notable, however, is about $2.5 billion in “wiggle room” or “flexible funding” for the new Liberal leader to allocate over the next three years.

That amounts to a significant slush fund for the yet-unnamed leader. Of course this “holding” budget may yet turn out to share features of past February budgets that later proved light on fiscal reality and were revised into wholly new “updates” six months later. For that, and for news on where about $1 billion of taxpayer funding is headed in the next year, stay tuned not to the legislature but to the Liberal leadership race.

Can Christy Clark be stopped? IN THE HOUSE KEITH BALDREY

C

an Christy Clark be stopped from winning the B.C. Liberal party leader-

ship? That question must weigh heavy on the minds of her three opponents as the campaign heads into its final week. She is the perceived frontrunner in the race (even the other candidates agree on that) and if her campaign’s own polling is accurate, she is tantalizingly close to becoming the next premier of B.C. She claims to have more than 40 per cent support when all ridings are counted. That translates to more than 3,400 “points” in the party’s weighted electoral system, which would put her about 850 points short of a majority victory (there are 8,500 points – 100 per riding – so a majority win is 4,251 points). If there is no first-count winner, of course, then the second choices of those who voted for candidates who are dropped from the ballot are then counted. If, say, Mike de Jong finishes last on the first count, those who voted for him would have their second choices redistributed among the other candidates.

Presumably, Clark would pick up at least some of that support, which would push her even closer to victory. And that’s when things will become very interesting. After this second count, the third-place candidate would drop off the ballot. That means it’s likely that either George Abbott or Kevin Falcon would drop, and their pool of voters would have their second choices redistributed. Presumably, this would be a much larger number than voted for de Jong, which in turn increases the chances that Clark will get some support from this group. Despite their clashes in the campaign, it’s easy to see a lot of Abbott supporters naturally making Clark their second choice. After all, there is not a wide philosophical gap between the two candidates. On paper, it’s easy to say there’s no way Falcon supporters would list Clark as their second choice. The two candidates, after all, are polar opposites and represent the most conservative and liberal bases of the party. But since we’re talking about potentially thousands of voters, it’s not difficult to imagine a small percentage of Falcon supporters actually listing Clark as an attractive second option. That, combined with the secondchoice support she gets from de Jong, should push her over the top.

Bottled water not about politics Dear Editor:

Re: Battle of opinions continues, The Record, Feb. 16 My mother was once chastised after an address to the teachers’ federation for saying the biggest problem with the education system is all the adults. Watching this debate continue over what should be an environmental issue, not a partisan issue, I think she was right. I’m not a member of a union, I’m not a member of Voice. I really have no interest in this tit for tat in the media. What I do care about is getting bottled water out of the schools. The waste of plastic, of energy in manufacturing and shipping these bottles of a substance that comes out of our taps clean and crisp for less than pennies a glass. The billion dollars we spent upgrading our water ◗Clark Page 7 filtration system gives us some of the cleanest water

in the world. Even the students, who are probably even more oblivious to the partisan posturing going on in the lead up to silly season, are calling on the school board to do the right thing and eliminate bottled water from the schools. If there are problems with the pipes, that’s a health and safety issue – fix it. Here at SFU, filters have been installed at water dispensers across campus for students to fill reusable water bottles. Even in China, they’re ahead of us with filtered cold and hot water dispensers installed in the lobby of pretty much any commercial building. Enough with the politics, go fight your ideological debates over some other issue. This is a non-partisan environmental issue, do what’s right for the kids and the planet we’re leaving them, this isn’t about your egos. Matthew Laird, New Westminster

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Bottled water creates waste Dear Editor:

Re: Battle of opinions continues, The Record, Feb. 16 Poor Lori Watt, New Westminster school trustee – under attack for voting, as part of a majority of trustees, against bottled water in schools. It is alleged that Ms. Watt is in a conflict of interest because her low level day job is with CUPE, which opposes putting bottled water in schools. Ms. Watt’s persecutors have the legal opinion of a lawyer about that conflict bit, and Ms. Watt has a legal opinion counter to that legal opinion, but the attackers battle on for justice, the Canadian way, and poor little Nestle, the corporation that wants to sell the schools bottled water. Never mind that Nestle looms as the world’s biggest food company, operating in 86 countries with employees that number about three times the population of New Westminster. This tempest in a landfill-clogging plastic bottle well may be good news for all lawyers as it threatens to broaden the basis for claims of conflict of interest in the work of all public officials. If a school trustee who happens to work for CUPE, but does not participate in CUPE policy, who votes against bottled water, is accused of conflict of interest,

who might be next? What about a prime minister who orders tax cuts for big businesses that happen to contribute to his election campaigns? This water business also needs closer examination. Check out the Internet, and you’ll find, on balance, that bottled water and tap water seem to be even on safety concerns, rules and inspections. The biggest difference is cost: At the conservative price of $1 a bottle, you would pay about $1,780 for a cubic meter of water. For tap water, about 30 cents. In 2008, Nestle advertised that its bottled water “is the most environmentally responsible product in the world” and that most of the plastic bottles are recycled. After criticism by environmental groups, the company dropped both claims (today, only about two out of 10 plastic water bottles are recycled). Still, parents have the option of buying bottled water for the children to take to school. While I am, of course, deeply concerned by the possibility that I am doomed because I trust tap water, I hope the status of Ms. Watt is soon established so our world can get back to more important issues such as why Justin Bieber did not win a Grammy. Tony Eberts, New Westminster

Clark: Front runner so far ◗ continued from page 6

Well, maybe. Clark’s polling may be overstating stating her support, and it may well be true that very few people supporting other candidates end up making their second-best choice. But her front-runner status is why we are seeing, in the last weeks of the campaign, an attempt to forge a not-so-subtle ABC (Anyone But Clark) front in the party. Abbott and Falcon will likely try to send messages to each other’s supporters (and to de Jong’s as well) to make them the second choice, and not Clark. But the unique electoral system the party is using will make it more difficult for the ABC movement to

pick up steam. The main impediment is the fact that everyone votes once and sits back and watches candidates drop, and the secondchoices get redistributed (and, in certain scenarios, third choices as well, but I’m not going to get into the intricacies of that). So there’s no chance for a dropped candidate to turn to his supporters and lead them over to another candidate, as can happen at delegated conventions. That sort of thing can build momentum for the candidate getting that kind of push, but it won’t happen here. But there is one aspect of this electoral system that may be the great equalizer and may be Abbott and/or Falcon’s

best way of beating Clark: the vital need for the winning candidate to identify supporters, and then getting them to actually vote. Clark can be tracking high in the polls, but if her team does not identify its supporters and get them to vote in sufficient numbers, the stage will be set for Abbott or Falcon to leapfrog her on the third count. But I’m not betting against her (or on her either; the second-choice element makes things too unpredictable). In any event, the winner will be announced at 6:30 p.m. this Saturday (tune into Global as we’ll be covering it live). Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global B.C.

Man charged with trying to break in and steal vehicles

A New Westminster man has been charged with attempting to steal cars after a citizen called police and reported a man breaking into several vehicles on the weekend. Police received a call around 10 p.m. Sunday, informing them of a man making his way around the 600 block of Queens Avenue, breaking into cars. Police attended the scene, set up surveillance and spotted the man exiting a vehicle, opening the trunk and inspecting its contents. Police then moved in on the

man, who had started to walk away, and arrested him without incident. In a news release, Sgt. Gary Weishaar said the vehicle had its steering column removed and another nearby vehicle showed signs of forced entry. Police have now charged Ryan Alan Skeith, 34, of no fixed address with two counts attempt theft of auto, and two counts of mischief to auto. Skeith, who is known to police, remains in custody pending his next court appearance Feb. 28. – Brent Richter, staff reporter

as long as they are still in the old building that has been scheduled to be rebuilt for the better part of a decade. Hannah Crisp is an NWSS student who’s part of the school’s environment club. Crisp had petitioned Woudzia and the board to ban bottled water at the school as soon as possible. “I don’t really agree with the recommendations,” said Hannah on Tuesday morning after hearing about Woudzia’s three recommendations. “This is what we have been trying to avoid.” Hannah said the students had met with Woudzia recently and presented their case, saying that getting rid of bottled water was a separate issue from the new high school project. “If we never get a high school, does that mean we never get rid of bottled water?”

she said. “We’ve been waiting (for some time) for a new high school and it hasn’t happened.” Woudzia said the rationale for delaying the banning of bottled water is so that modern water fountains and bottle refill stations can be incorporated into the design of the new schools. “This preference was expressed by a multitude of respondents, including those who support the consumption of tap water and/or the use of stainless steel water containers,” said Woudzia. Hannah said she hasn’t given up and hopes that trustees would listen to students’ concerns before casting their votes. “We’re going to show a short YouTube video that shows the story of water bottles and why we want them gone,” she said. “We’re still hoping the trustees will vote to ban bottled water immediately.”

Conflict: O’Connor says he will take his battle to the B.C. Supreme Court ◗ continued from page 5

have received nothing, as of (this morning) that leads me to believe we need a third legal opinion.” Ewen said that while the bottled water issue is on the open agenda for Tuesday night’s meeting, conflict of interest isn’t on the open agenda for tomorrow night’s meeting. However, the board also holds its closed meeting prior to and after the open meeting and Ewen couldn’t confirm or deny what is on that agenda. As for O’Connor, even if the school district doesn’t get

its own legal opinion, he’ll continue soldiering on. “I don’t agree with (Ewen’s) assessment,” said O’Connor in a Monday morning interview. “There are still some questions that need to be answered.” Asked why he hasn’t directly contacted any of the trustees on this matter, O’Connor said his previous dealings with Watt have led him to believe there’s no point in bringing it up verbally or through a phone call. Instead, O’Connor said: “I’m bringing it (forward) in a written form,” he said.

“That way, all the trustees get it at the same time.” As for how far he’s willing to take the issue, O’Connor leaves little doubt he’s giving up any time soon. “As I have previously stated,” writes O’Connor. “I am prepared to secure and commit the necessary resources needed to make an application to the Supreme Court of British Columbia if that is what is required to bring this matter to a proper resolution.” For continuing coverage of this story, look for updates on www.royalcityrecord.com.

City writer gets the scoop on lacrosse Barbara Adamski’s quest to set the record straight led to a fascinating Master’s thesis on the history of lacrosse BY ANDREW FLEMING REPORTER afleming@royalcityrecord.com

When local writer Barbara Adamski pitched an idea for a story about the Salmonbellies and the city’s passionate box lacrosse scene to The Walrus magazine a few years ago, she didn’t expect it would lead to pursuing a Master’s degree on the history of the sport. The self-described “lacrosse mom,” who enjoys the rough-and-tumble game from the safety of the stands rather than from on the floor, said she made the decision after coming across a veritable mountain of misinformation about one of Canada’s official national sports while researching the article. Take, for example, the common misconception that lacrosse is the official national sport instead of hockey, a quirk of Canadian history that can be traced to a Montreal dentist and lacrosse enthusiast named William George Beers, who apparently wanted this to be the case so badly it eventually became accepted as fact. Beers wrote an early book about the game entitled Lacrosse: The National Game of Canada, published shortly after Confederation, and it turns out that most Canadians were willing to simply take his word on it. “Beers was a huge advocate for the game and really wanted it to be the national sport,” said Adamski. “He was saying it was the official national sport, but that was never on the record. So there’s a whole controversy about that. It only became the official summer sport after somebody was researching it and realized ‘hey, it’s not even on the books.’” In fact, it was only in 1994 that Kamloops MP Nelson Riis introduced a private member’s bill nominating the Barb Adamski more obvious and widely embraced candidate – hockey – to be the national sport that the issue even came up in Parliament. A compromise was eventually reached by naming hockey the official winter sport and lacrosse the summer counterpart, even though box (indoor) lacrosse has largely usurped field lacrosse in popularity. Adamski eventually found so many “all over the map” discrepancies about the game that she turned her research into a Master of Arts thesis in Integrated Studies, which, among other things, also debunked the widely accepted story of how the game got its name. Jean de Brébeuf, a French Jesuit missionary, is credited with christening the sport after supposedly noting a similarity between the stick used by players, with its distinctive wooden shaft and twisted bark webbing, and a Shepherd’s crook, a crosier carried by bishops. The problem with this, as Adamski discovered, is that there is nothing to actually confirm he ever actually made said observation, which led her to getting in touch with researchers at both Library and Archives Canada and The Canadian Encyclopedia. “I said ‘I don’t mean to be antagonistic or anything but I really need to know what’s going on here,” she said. “We began corresponding through e-mail and ended up talking quite a bit over the phone. It got to the point where the two of us actually went to original copies of Brébeuf’s diaries from the 1600s. I printed them out from

Lacrosse examination: Barbara Adamski’s research on the Salmonbellies for a story led to pursuing a MA. Above, the 1902 provincial championship team. At right, Paul Parnell, New Westminster’s 1965 Athlete of the Year, in action against the Victoria Shamrocks. Canadiana.org and they’re all in the original French. I’m talking to Laura (Bonikowsky, an editor at The Canadian Encyclopedia) on the phone and we’re going through it all and we realize that he doesn’t actually say that. ... It’s just become part of the mythology around lacrosse.” Instead, “crosse” is simply a French word for stick. “It might not be in Quebecois, but in France French, a hockey stick would be a ‘crosse de hockey.’ It’s very basic.” Her research was often complicated by supposed experts on the subject turning out to be anything but. The CBC digital archives, for example, also perpetuate the myth, while none other than the Canadian Lacrosse Association claim on a “Did You Know?” section on their website that “the earliest European record of Lacrosse dates back to 1863, when the French missionary Jean de Brébeuf wrote of seeing Native people playing a game with sticks and a ball. He called it ‘la crosse’ because the sticks reminded him of the Bishop’s crozier.” Yet another problem with this is, by 1863, it would have been over two hundred years since Brébeuf had been tortured to death by Iroquois – a group who, it should be noted, already had a perfectly good word of their own for the violent game, Tewaarathon, meaning “little brother of war.” (Or at least this is what experts say the word means; it’s tough to be sure.) Adamski added that her research into lacrosse’s origins, which also delved into a possible Viking connection via Newfoundland, is far from the final say on the matter. “I don’t think there is any true authority on the subject,” she said. “I think the more you delve into it, the more you realize it’s just a big can of worms.”

Blenz prez drops in for a meet up and drink AROUND TOWN

THERESA MCMANUS

T

he Metro Vancouver Professionals group has good things to say about New Westminster. The group is holding a meetup on Wednesday, Feb. 23 (today) at Drink Urban Lounge on Columbia Street. “As B.C.’s original Capital City, New Westminster was once a bustling and vibrant hub for pioneers and gold-miners alike. Fast-forward a few generations, and it looks like a major resurgence is happening right before our eyes,” stated a brochure about the meetup. “Being one of the region’s

fastest-growing cities of the new millennium, both new families and business professionals are flocking to New Westminster to work, play and stay. Adding in the Royal City’s historic charm and architecture, and you have yourself and irresistible backdrop for many new entertainment and culinary offerings, including its latest gem, Drink Urban Lounge.” George Moen, president of Blenz Coffee, is scheduled to attend the Metro Vancouver Professionals gathering. Metro Vancouver Professionals meet on the last Wednesday of every month. Each gathering features a guest speaker.

Flag-waving MP

Burnaby-New Westminster MP Peter Julian is calling on the federal government to designate Feb. 15 as Flag Day. Two years ago, Julian

tabled a private member’s bill in the House of Commons that would designate every Feb. 15 as Flag Day. He’s urging the government to start talks with the provinces and territories to designate Feb. 15 as Flag Day. “This is an idea whose time has come,” he said in a press release. “I strongly believe that once the federal government sits down with the provinces and territories after taking the pulse of our nation, we will quickly find a way to accommodate our National Flag Day holiday. I don’t believe there are any serious roadblocks to this idea and my hope is that this will happen by 2015, the 50th anniversary of our Canadian flag.” According to Julian, Parliament declared Feb. 15 as National Flag Day in 1996 to commemorate the day in 1965 when the current Canadian flag was first

raised all over Parliament Hill in Ottawa. He said the day isn’t a legal holiday, and Canada is one of the few counties in the world without a national flag day.

A SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO THE RECORD

Balance is key to family fitness

Are your child’s eyes ready for Learning?

A CHALLENGE BECOMES A MOTIVATION

Did you know: Stan Karras and his daughters do dual family and exercise time during martial arts classes.

• 80% of Learning is through your child’s eyes • 1 of 5 school children have a visual disorder

PHOTO: SUBMITTED

When one family underwent a home-building project to put in a bar downstairs, they never thought they would be renovating their life. But that’s what the Karras family found, after a bar project turned on the taps of lifestyle choices that led to more balance and better fitness. Stan Karras, 43, said things got a bit comfortable when he and his wife had two daughters, now six and eight years old, and they settled into the frenetic life of parenthood. “We’re not different than 95 per cent of families out there,” Karras said, adding they all used to lead a more active life. “You get involved in so many things, and just get exhausted. We ended up pulling them out of everything.” But last fall, as Karras and his wife surveyed the room where they were putting a bar, the pair realized they would have to put the exercise equipment they had into storage to make way for additional seating. The irony of the situation was unsettling. “As I put it away, something struck me as being fundamentally wrong with taking something down that’s healthy

for you to create room for something that’s not necessarily good for you,” he said. “I wondered what kind of example that was setting for the kids.” He dropped by Fitness Town to see what type of equipment he could get that might fit in with the new design. While there, one of the staffers told him about a family fitness challenge they were holding. “At first I signed up thinking I was never going to do it, but I wanted to be polite,” he chuckles, describing how the idea grew on him. “One day, I said, ‘To heck with it, I’m going to do this.’” When he approached the other members of his family, he realized that he not only had cheerleaders but team members as well. “I slowly got the kids involved, and they just jumped all over it. They thought it was a blast,” he said. “Children, all they want to do is hang out and play. Fitness is not work to them, it’s something that’s fun. You’re hanging out with your dad, you’re hanging out with your mom.” They incorporated exercise into their lives every day: taking the dog for a walk, going swimming

and taking taekwondo — all family activities they could do together. “We weren’t working out very hard, but we were doing something every day,” he said. They also embraced healthy cooking, experimenting with recipes and incorporating more salads into meals. He began documenting their progress on a blog called Fit Forties Father (www. fitfortiesfather.blogspot.com), and extended family and friends began cheering the foursome on. “It was a little bit embarrassing, because I don’t really like attention, but the kids loved it. They would help me write things out,” he said. At the end of the day, Karras lost 12 pounds and won the challenge — meaning $5,000 in fitness equipment to keep them moving. The family increased their energy levels, and Karras said the real prize is being able to enjoy the pace of their new life. “We’ve limited the kids to two extra curricular activities. That will keep them involved, that will give them good family time and it won’t burn us out,” he said. “It’s all in moderation and learning a healthy lifestyle.”

Prime of life your guide to mature living

Planning tips for a financially secure retirement By: Sarah Twomey When people think about retirement planning, they tend to only focus on retirement savings and RRSPs.

This is not surprising because it’s hard to imagine what life might be like in 20 or 30 years. But there’s more to retirement planning than just saving money. For example, some new retirees are caught off guard when they realize that they are no longer covered by their group insurance coverage. One way to avoid these types of surprises is by thinking about what your values and lifestyle may be at that stage of your life, then finding the financial tools that will help you make it happen.

Disability insurance

Typically, disability insurance is not required in retirement because your income is savings and/or pension-based. However, it may be useful for those people who decide to take partial retirement and work part time.

Life insurance

Most retirees don’t require basic life insurance because the children have grown, they are likely debt-free and have some savings. However, there are life insurance products that are ideal for estate and tax planning as protection for inheritance amounts.

Converting group life insurance

New retirees may have the option of converting their group life insurance into permanent individual coverage. This option is usually available during the first 30 days following the end of employment, before the retiree turns 65. While this is an ideal solution because an insurability evaluation isn’t necessary, the policy premiums may be expensive because they are based on the new retiree’s age.

Health insurance

Health and accident insurance becomes increasingly important during retirement. Some provinces have implemented public drug insurance plans, but then may include a large annual deductible or may only be available to low-income participants. By contrast, there are a wide variety of private supplemental health insurance providers. Since each policy offering is different, it’s important to do your research. Now more than ever, planning ahead will ensure that you have a happy and financially secure retirement. Also, some of these options may offer a beneficial tax treatment. Take the time to get the facts by speaking with your financial advisor. - News Canada

SAFER makes rent more affordable for B.C. seniors Make your rent more affordable

The Province of British Columbia provides SAFER subsidies to more than 15,000 senior households renting apartments in the private market across BC.

ARE YOU ELIGIBLE? You may be eligible for SAFER if you meet all of the following conditions:

- You are 60 or older. - You have lived in British Columbia for the full 12 months immediately preceding your application.

- You and your spouse (with whom you are living) meet one of the following citizenship requirements: Canadian citizen(s); or authorized to take up permanent residence in Canada; or Convention refugee(s).

- You pay more than 30 per cent of your gross (before tax) monthly

household income towards the rent for your home, including the cost of pad rental for a manufactured home (trailer) that you own and occupy.

If you are eligible, SAFER may subsidize part of the rent that is over 30 per cent of your income. To find out more about SAFER, including application forms, visit www.bchousing.org or call 604-433-2218 from Metro Vancouver or 1-800-257-7756 from elsewhere in B.C.

When the company Bonita was working for in 2007 had to downsize, e_b e_bT `UWZbVRWS]c Sa[db \SR^bR was given a lay-off notice. Thankfully, she had a few cushions to help tide her over: severance pay; employment assistance; and her RRSPs. She had also recently started to receive a monthly rent subsidy through Shelter Aid For Elderly Renters (SAFER). The provincial government program helps make rents affordable for B.C. seniors with low to moderate incomes. SAFER provides monthly cash payments for eligible seniors age 60 or over who pay rent for their homes. Because SAFER subsidies are calculated to give the most assistance to people with the least income, Bonita saw her subsidy increase when her other sources of income decreased. “For three years I had CPP, plus some money from dog and house sitting and acting as an extra in the movies while I looked for part-time work,” she said. “The SAFER subsidy made my rent more affordable and meant I didn’t have to move from my apartment.” Bonita is now employed at Walmart where she began as a greeter and is currently a cashier. BC Housing provides SAFER subsidies to more than 15,000 senior households renting apartments in the private market, including singles, couples and people sharing a unit.

your guide to mature living

Seniors take control of their immunity Once we reach 60, special attention is needed to keep our immune system working properly, health specialists say. By paying avid attention to nutrition, seniors can go a long way towards keeping infections away. On the other hand, neglected nutrition may make contact with the harmful germs much worse. “As we age, it becomes harder for the immune system to fight off even just cold and flu viruses,” says Sherry Torkos, pharmacist and author of the Canadian Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine. “Immunology is a broad field of study and researchers continue to explore reasons our immune systems weaken. Some think the body becomes less able to produce the cells that fight off illness. Others point to the fact that seniors often eat less, which deprives

the body of the nutrients needed to keep their immune systems strong. It is a fact that many older people are undernourished, and this lack of important vitamins and minerals could be the reason for vulnerability to chronic illness and disease.”

Immune-building tips

Many seniors are pro-active when it comes to maintaining the best possible health, so take a look at some of their every day measures: • Pay attention to food. Although there isn’t one food that will provide an instant boost to your immune system, developing the habit of eating a balanced, healthy diet with antioxidant-rich fresh fruit and vegetables, lean proteins and fibre will support good health.

• Consider dietary supplements to complement your diet. Many seniors can benefit from taking daily vitamins and minerals. There are also specific supplements for supporting immune health. It contains extracts from American ginseng and reishi mushroom, both of which are clinically proven to strengthen the immune system. • Establish a regular sleeping pattern. A full eight hours rejuvenates the mind, replenishes the body and provides energy for a positive attitude and an active lifestyle. • Nurture your social life. Loneliness and depression pose serious challenges to the immune system. Seniors who are active, productive, mentally stimulated and socially engaged enjoy better health and longevity. - News Canada

Eva’s legacy continues to spread joy THE LIVELY CITY JULIE MACLELLAN

W

ow, you’re off sick for a day or two, and the arts world goes crazy! And I mean that in a good way. I’m just catching up to my e-mails and messages about all things artsrelated, and I had to stop to take a moment to follow up on the long-awaited 65 Red Roses benefit concert. The benefit concert for Cystic Fibrosis Canada was held at Massey Theatre on Friday night and was, from my seat in the audience, a resounding success on all levels. All the musical artists involved – Dave Vertesi, the Zolas, Hannah Georgas and Dan Mangan – donated their time for the evening, and Massey Theatre provided the venue for free. It was all in honour of a wonderful cause: raising money and awareness

in the fight against cystic fibrosis, in memory of New Westminster’s own Eva Markvoort. The concert raised more than $37,000 for cystic fibrosis research. It was clear that each and every one of the artists involved took the cause seriously, as they offered up passionate and inspired sets that got the audience hooked right from the beginning of the evening – and didn’t let go until long after the final rousing strains of Mangan’s Robots got the entire place singing together. (And I do mean the entire place. If you’re not still singing: ‘Robots need love too, they want to be loved by you,’ then clearly, you weren’t there.) Not surprisingly, it was Mangan (recently voted the “sexiest man in music” by readers of The Georgia Straight) who got the crowd the most revved up - witness the stampede of teenage girls (and a not inconsiderable few outside that age and gender bracket) who flocked to the stage for his performance. My newsroom colleague Andrew Fleming played ball hockey with Mangan the following day at a Vancouver Food

Bank fundraiser held on Granville Street and asked him about it. “It was absolutely amazing, I’m really glad I was there for it,” Mangan said. “It was a pretty intense atmosphere. It wasn’t even a year ago (that Eva died), and you could tell things are still pretty raw for a lot of people.” It was, undeniably, a poignant night. The event was hosted by filmmaker Philip Lyall - one-half of the duo (with Nimisha Mukerji) who put together the 65 Red Roses documentary about Eva – and actor Rachel Aberle, both of whom were good friends of Eva’s and who spoke lovingly (and often humorously) about her throughout the night. Eva’s mom, Janet Brine, was also on hand to talk about her daughter and introduce a video of Eva herself, talking about the fight against cystic fibrosis and her hope that CF would come to stand for “Cure Found.” Filmmaker Stuart Gillies, a friend of Eva and her family, was there to introduce the whimsical and sweet short film he made in Eva’s memory, A Wish Where The Wind Once

Blew. The evening was also used to help launch the #4eva social media campaign to help raise awareness of the need for organ donation – search the hashtag #4eva on Twitter to follow all the conversation about it. Raising awareness of organ donation is, of course, one of the motivations of all the work now being done in Eva’s name – with the overriding goal of researching towards an eventual cure for cystic fibrosis. You can follow all the efforts at Eva’s blog, 65redroses.livejournal.com. Kudos to everyone involved for a beautiful evening.

Great bargains on city art

Another short note of thanks and kudos to another fine group of Royal City folks: the New West Artists group. Though, alas, by Saturday morning I was already succumbing to illness that took me out for the weekend, I did manage to make a quick visit down to River Market to visit the new group’s launch exhi-

bition, which was on all weekend on the market’s second floor. It was fairly early on Saturday morning, and there was already a buzz about the place, with plenty of browsers and buyers enjoying the wide variety of work by the group – all of which was for sale for under $100. It’s clear that there’s an enormous amount of artistic talent in our fair city, and I look forward to seeing more from this passionate group of local artists. Oh, and an added note: While I was at River Market, I also popped in to Great Wall Tea, which

City wants artifacts Council wants archaeological items preserved

BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

The City of New Westminster wants any historical artifacts that may be unearthed at the civic centre site to be salvaged. The city’s community heritage commission expressed a need for the city to be aware of the possibility that artifacts having archaeological or historical significancemaybeexposed during construction of the civic centre and noted that these items would need to be salvaged. “The site has been redeveloped in recent times,” said Coun. Jaimie McEvoy.

“There may not be anything there.” McEvoy said it’s important to be aware of the potential. “You never know – we might find something interesting.” Julie Schueck, the city’s heritage planner, said the motion approved by council is meant to ensure that contractors working on the site know the city is interested in any artifacts that may be found during excavation of the Columbia Street site. “We don’t know if anything is there. Considering how old that area is, there is always the potential for something,” she said. “It could be anything – old bottles, a horseshoe.” Schueck notes that when a portion of Columbia Square was excavated, crews dug up some old

foundation brickwork. Council also authorized staff to enter into consultation with the developer of the Plaza 88 project to ensure that any artifacts or items of archaeological or historical significance that are discovered at the Blackie Street site are retained. “There was some initial confusion that the work going on on Blackie Street was city property, when it is not,” Schueck said. “I think they dug up some wood. That sparked some interest.” According to Schueck, a provincial policy deals with any pre-1846 items, but nothing is in place for artifacts dated after 1846. Schueck and museum staff will be working on a city policy regarding post1846 archeological finds from downtown sites.

New West medals in field BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

New Westminster beat the previously unbeatable to win the B.C. under-14 youth field lacrosse provincials in Victoria last Sunday. The Warlocks teens defeated the Adanacs 10-4 in the u-14 goldmedal final, just hours after upsetting Pacific Coast league winner Port Coquitlam 9-6 in a crossover matchup early Sunday. Pac Rim contributed the only blemish to New Westminster’s record at the provincials, tying the Warlocks 7-7 in a first-round game on Friday. New Westminster won medals in three of the four age groups at the provincials. The Warlocks gave it their best shot at u-16, winning the first of two silvers for the New West club. New Westminster was undefeated in group play and met the Pacific Coast league champion Adanacs in the divisional final, falling 15-11 to

the Coquitlam club. New Westminster made a big push in the final three minutes to close, narrowing the deficit to 11-10. Kyle Madden, middie Jeremy Wilson and big stick Nathan Stewart were the standouts for the New Westminster side. Tyler Barrett earned the team’s Fair Play award. “(The Adanacs) were the best team in the province all year. But we came close,” said u-16 Fair Play coach Jamie Stewart. “We got it to a one-goal game, but it didn’t happen.” The first-place u-19 Warlocks were unlucky to not come away with the gold in their division. New Westminster was less than a minute away from winning gold before a stunning comeback by Victoria stole the first-place medals in extra time. Playing with two men in the penalty box, New Westminster was enjoying a seemingly comfortable three-goal lead with just 40 seconds left to play when Victoria mounted

its sudden comeback, eventually winning 15-14 in overtime. “The players were disappointed and the coaches were disappointed,” said coach Dirk Rachfall. New Westminster had earlier defeated the Capital City club 16-10 in round-robin play. Reid Mydske was New West’s u19 Fair Play winner. The u-12 Warlocks just missed a spot in the final four, finishing with a 1-2 record. New Westminster lost 4-3 to eventual fourth-place finisher Delta in its provincial opener. Noall Degife won the Fair Play award, while Jonathan Rachfall was named u-12 Fair Play coach. “We’re a very strong lacrosse organization,” added Stewart. “All the way from the oldest kids from u-19s to u-16 and u-14, we’re strong, strong, strong.” The Tier 2 provincials will be held this weekend at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex-West. Final day action goes Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Burnaby South Rebels left little doubt who the best AAA boys’ basketball team in the district is. The Rebels struck early and often, putting league runner-up Byrne Creek in trouble from the opening tipoff in an eventual 85-45 victory at South in the Burnaby/New Westminster district hoop final Friday. The New Westminster Hyacks shook off a slow start and cruised to a 7046 win over the Burnaby Central Wildcats to pick up the final available Lower Mainland berth. Central opened with on an 11-1 run but New Westminster quickly got its legs beneath them to finish the quarter leading 18-16. After an evenly played second quarter, the Hyacks took over the latter half, outscoring the Wildcats 3916. “It was a struggle. We definitely had a letdown after the (earlier semifinal loss to Byrne Creek),” said New Westminster head coach John Doughty. Masood Wali led all scorers with 21 points, including four treys, while post Dylan Johnson contributed 16 points to the win. Central guard Miguel Alina replied with 20 points for the ‘Cats. The Hyacks will face Kitsilano on road Wednesday in their firstround matchup. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m. In the championship final, the No. 1-ranked Rebels led Byrne Creek 178 after the first 10 minutes and by 16 points at the half. But the crushing blow

came in the third quarter when South overwhelmed the visiting Bulldogs 32-13. “We didn’t execute,” were the only words Byrne Creek senior Paul Mallari could find to describe the outcome. South showed clear dominance everywhere on the court, forcing Byrne Creek guards into repeated turnovers off the dribble. “You can’t beat (South) with ratball basketball,” said Byrne Creek head coach Wayne Best. “It just won’t happen.” South started its senior class, but later put Byrne Creek in trouble with 10 points off the bench in the first quarter. The Rebels got balanced scoring from eight players in the opening half, while the Bulldogs managed just four baskets from three separate players in the same allotted time. Then in the third quarter, the Rebel juggernaut got going behind a 15-point contribution, including a pair of three-pointers and five-for-five free throws, from Grade 11 post Nic Irvine. Irvine led all scorers with 24 points. Daniel Edwards pitched in with 19 points and Jok Malek added 14, including a handful of breakaway dunks that excited the capacity crowd at South. South also made the Bulldogs pay at the foul line, netting 20-of-23 free throws in the second half alone. Kennedy George led Byrne Creek with 11 points. South head coach Greg Matic said the Rebel players really responded well ◗Hoops Page 24

Team B.C. wins first Games hockey gold medal in decades BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

Team B.C. won its first gold medal in more than 30 years in boys’ hockey at the Canada Winter Games. B.C., including Northwest Giants major midget players Sam Reinhart and Jackson Houck, helped the provincial under-16 squad capture its first-ever gold

at the Halifax Games Feb. 18. B.C. last won a gold medal using a team of junior B players back in 1979. B.C. defeated the previously unbeaten Quebec team 7-4 in the championship final. Nic Petan of Delta tallied the eventual game-winning goal with his fourth point of the night, giving B.C. a 5-4 lead with just five minutes left in the game.

B.C. team captain Curtis Lazar tallied a pair of markers in the championship game, to lead all scorers at the Games with 12 goals and 17 total points. Petan was third in overall scoring, while Reinhart finished in a tie for fourth with four goals, including the 4-2 goal in the championship final, and 11 points. A day after the game, the

Hockey Hall of Fame announced Petan’s stick used to score the game-winner, Lazar’s helmet and Houck’s pant shells will be put on display at the Toronto hockey shrine. B.C. had a slow start to the competition, finishing third in Pool A with a 1-2 record behind both Quebec and Ontario. The B.C. boys opened the Games with a 5-4 overtime loss

to Quebec. They then tumbled to a 5-1 defeat against Ontario on Feb. 14. But it was a different story in the championship rounds. B.C. doubled Manitoba 4-2 in the quarter-finals. They then avenged their loss in pool play to Ontario, winning 5-2 in the semifinals on Feb. 17. Alberta beat Ontario 5-3 to steal the bronze medal.

Hyack girls move Steelers into playoffs on hot streak on in Crehan Cup BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR

It appears the Grandview Steelers are peaking for the playoffs. The junior B Steelers stole a 4-3 win over the firstplace Richmond Sockeyes following a shootout in their final regular season Pacific International Junior Hockey League game Sunday at Burnaby Winter Club. The win was Grandview’s sixth in seven games. The only defeat in that span came in a shootout against North Delta. Kentaro Tanaka scored the shootout winner after assisting on all three Grandview goals during regulation play. Backup David Banka was sensational in goal for the home club, stopping 44 shots, including all five attempts in the penalty shootout. Cody Rowand got the Steelers on the board first with a nifty tip-in off a Chris Busto shot in the opening period. Tanaka broke up a Richmond break and sprung Marko Gordic free for Grandview’s 2-0 goal early in the middle frame. Nicholas Gushue gave

Earlier, the Steelers locked up third place in the Tom Shaw conference with a 6-3 win in Squamish over the last-place Wolf Pack on Saturday. Tanaka again led the way with a first-star, fourpoint night, including a

goal. Busto and team captain Curtis Rocchetti both had three-point outings. Busto contributed a pair of goals, while Rocchetti potted his 19th goal of the season. Banka again got the win in goal, making 32 stops. Grandview opened its first-round playoff against the Delta Ice Hawks Tuesday (after Record

deadlines). The Steelers are at home to Delta tonight (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. Game 4 will be back at the winter club on Sunday at 4 p.m. “We have to be up for the task, get solid goaltending and take care of our own end,” said assistant Steelers coach John McDade.

The New Westminster Salmonbellies are one win away from a berth into the B.C. high school AAA girls’ basketball championships. The unranked Hyack girls upset No. 12 Carson Graham 45-41 at the Crehan Cup Lower Mainland championships at StevestonLondon Secondary on Monday. Shooting guard Meriam Ali stepped up with 17 points, including three big, third-quarter three-pointers to lead the Hyack attack. “I think we’re feeling stoked. I’m psyched,” said Ali after the first-round upset. “I had a lot of pressure on me and I overcame it. I feel I can do anything right now.” And so do the Hyacks as a group. Playing with a height disadvantage, New Westminster scrapped for every point in the low-scoring affair. After trailing the entire first quarter, New Westminster took the lead on back-to-back treys from point guard Ariana Sider and never relinquished it.

But there were some nervous moments in the final 10 minutes. Carson Graham tied the game 37-37 early in the period, but the Hyacks fought back with a 6-0 run sparked by Jettie McLaughlin’s midrange jumper. The North Shore No. 3 seed pressed again to equalize in the final minutes, but the ball control of Sider and Ali’s two free throws in the dying seconds sealed the upset. “I think at the end, they could tell we were scared,” Ali admitted. “We were nervous as hell,” agreed Hyacks head coach Doug Woodward. “But it was always our plan to run them. We really didn’t play all that well.” But New Westminster played well enough, receiving timely contributions from Sider, with 13 points, and McLaughlin, with 11. The Hyack girls will meet No. 7-ranked Handsworth in the Mainland semifinal at Argyle Secondary on Thursday. Game time is 8:15 p.m. “It isn’t going to be easy,” Woodward added. “If we don’t press, we’re going to have a tough time.”

TRUTH IN ''EMPLOYMENT'' ADVERTISING Postmedia Community Publishing makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment. If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711, Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
