Tim Hortons doubles as an ER BY BRENT RICHTER REPORTER brichter@royalcityrecord.com

With an overflowing emergency room and surrounding hallways, staff at Royal Columbian Hospital turned to the adjacent Tim Hortons cafeteria as a space to treat patients Monday night. David Plug, director of public affairs for Fraser Health, said the RCH’s emergency ward was experiencing a busier than normal night and set up six stretchers with medical equipment and privacy screens in the dining area for three hours. “The doctors and nurses had to deal with congestion and prepare for potentially more so they went to a non-clinical

area,” Plug said. “We do have plans so that if there is a significant accident or emergency, the emergency department can expand into non-clinical areas. This was an unusual one. This is not a designated overflow area for day-to-day use.” Plug said the impromptu treatment area was only used by four patients for a total time of one-and-a-half hours. He said some patients commented that it was a better environment for treatment than an open area or hallway where there is more noise and less privacy. “Ideally we’d like to have them in the emergency department,” he said. “This was the next-best option.” Plug said the dining area had been

cleaned before patients were transferred there and no infectious diseases were present. Asked if the patients were put-off about being treated in the same place they might order a double-double, Plug said the response from patients was not entirely positive. “Certainly, opposed to a corridor or other non-clinical area, it got some more attention and comments,” he said. “The situation is not ideal, but we thank them for their patience and understanding and our doctors and nurses worked really hard to make sure they got safe and appropriate care,” he said. room has been endemic over the years, prompting frustration from ER doctors and staff. Fraser Health has been working on the conceptual phase of an expansion and redevelopment for the hospital but Plug said it is too soon to suggest a timeline for the project. “We hope to get it to a level of detail where we can submit it and get approval from the government to proceed. That would be a big improvement for health care in our region,” he said. “It is our topmost priority but it is dependent upon the completion of the proposal and government approvals.” Plug said he hopes the appointment

Firefighters contain West End house fire BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

Pat Tracy/THE RECORD

House saved: Firefighters confer after crews contained a fire that started early Tuesday morning in a house on Hamilton Street in the West End.

New Westminster firefighters managed to extinguish an attic fire before it spread to the rest of the house. Fire crews attended a house fire on Hamilton Street about 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 1. The fire started in the attic. “The cause is suspected electrical,” said fire inspector Brent Joel. “It had some very old knob and tube wiring in there.” John Hatch, the fire department’s division chief of public safety and fire prevention, said a neighbour happened to be walking by and noticed smoke coming out of the roof. He said the home’s occupant was

alarmed by the fire, but wasn’t injured. Joel said witnesses banged on the door and alerted the occupant to the fire. He said the house can’t be occupied at this time because there’s a hole in the roof and the home’s electrical will need to be checked. “It was a matter of probably minutes away from entering the house,” Joel said. “There are some brown spots in the wall in the dining room.” Hatch said there was smoke coming out of the east side of the “well-built older home” when firefighters arrived. They got on the roof, opened up the area where the fire was burning and extinguished the fire. “The guys did a good job with stopping it in the attic,” he said.

◗ CITY HALL

Planning roads and transit Transportation engineer will prepare plan for city’s roads, transit, cycle routes and greenways

BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

The City of New Westminster is taking steps to fill an integral position in the engineering department. Jerry Behl, who has been working for the City of Kelowna as a traffic and transportation engineer, has been hired as the city’s new transportation engineer. He will start with the City of New Westminster on April 4. “We have an excellent individual joining us from the City of Kelowna. Very experienced in sustainability transportation,” said Jim Lowrie, the city’s director of engineering. “We

are looking forward to him joining us.” The transportation engineer’s position had previously been filled by Catherine Mohoruk, who took a position as the City of Coquitlam’s transportation planning manager. “It’s a senior transportation engineering position, responsible for long-range planning, all modes,” Lowrie said of the position. “The person will be key in preparing our new master transportation plan that we are trying to start this year. It’s a large multimodal plan that will involve a significant amount of public consultation.” The transportation engineer’s job posting stated that New Westminster’s transportation system consists of a complex network of traditional grid street, SkyTrain lines, bus routes, pedestrian and cycling corridors, recreational greenways,

major transport routes and railways. The transportation engineering will be responsible for all aspects of urban transportation planning, traffic impact studies, travel demand management, neighbourhood traffic calming, road safety improvements, functional intersection and road designs, demand forecasting and budgeting. “Duties include developing longrange transportation plans and policies; conducting investigations and studies, reviewing land developing applications, addressing technical issues, planning corridors and overseeing the work of technical staff and consultants,” said the posting. “In addition, you will be required to manage special projects and liaise with council, committees, community groups, general public and outside agencies.” www.twitter.com/TheresaMcManus

Hospital: ‘We’ve clearly reached a breaking point’ ◗ continued from page 1

of a new health minister will lead to some new direction from the province on the proposed project. New Westminster MLA and interim provincial New Democrat Party leader Dawn Black said the incident highlights Premierdesignate Christy Clark’s need to live up campaign promises of putting families first, and rethink health care spending in the province. “Having patients at the Royal Columbian Hospital treated at Tim Hortons shows the degree to which our health care has declined under 10 years of B.C. Liberals. And now (Clark) wants to bring in changes that could result in a further $750 million cut,” Black said in a press release. “Ms. Clark has talked a good line on putting families first; now it’s time for her to show she meant it. It’s incumbent upon her to tell patients who rely on Royal Columbian what action she intends to take.” Meanwhile, NDP health critic and SurreyGreeen Timbers MLA Sue Hammell linked the Tim Hortons incident to Clark’s previous decisions in the B.C. Liberal cabinet. “Thisisanewlow, caused by systemic problems due to repeated mistakes and broken promises by the B.C. Liberals,” Hammell said. “This goes back to the closure of St. Mary’s Hospital, which resulted in patients being diverted to Royal Columbian. And it goes back to the B.C. Liberals’ 2001 broken election promise to create 5,000 additional long-term care spaces.” Peter Julian, New Democrat member of

Parliament for BurnabyNew Westminster, said overcrowding incidents like Monday night’s were both predictable and preventable. “We said seven years ago when they moved to close St. Mary’s Hospital that it would put an untenable amount of pressure

onto our health-care system in New Westminster, and I think we’ve clearly reached a breaking point when a Tim Hortons has to be used as part of the emergency ward,” he said. “At what point do we start to invest the funds that need to be invested into our health-care system rather

than throwing our money away on corporate tax cuts at the federal and provincial level?” New WestminsterCoquitlam MP Fin Donnelly raised the issue in Parliament during question period Tuesday, calling it “absurd.” www.twitter.com/BrentRichter

Parents warned about another luring attempt

Another warning has been sent to New Westminster parents about a possible man or men attempting to lure or follow schoolaged boys. According to a Feb. 28 letter to parents from Al Balanuik, assistant superintendent, a 12-year-old boy was riding his bicycle to Glenbrook Middle School when he noticed he was being followed by a vehicle. The boy reported that the vehicle would stop when he stopped, then continue to follow him. The boy described the vehicle as a “long white truck.” Descriptions from other recent cases of possible stranger contacts or followings describe vehicles as grey, black and red. The boy was not able to describe the driver. This is the sixth letter warning of similar

incidents sent to parents since January. New Westminster Police Service says some of the incidents have been shown to be misunderstandings and it is not yet clear if the other reported incidents are related. An officer has been assigned to oversee all reported cases of attempted child luring or following. Anyone with information related to Monday’s incident is asked to call the police at 604-525-5411. Parents are also being reminded to review safety recommendations for kids including: walking to school with friends, reporting suspicious incidents immediately and getting away from any situation that seems dangerous as fast as possible. – Brent Richter

private health care probably don’t like the optics of this one, although there is something to be said for being able to request a drink without having to pull that little cord and wait for an overworked nurse to show up. The New Democrats, smarting from the fact that the B.C. Liberals have chosen the popular Christy Clark as B.C.’s next premier – they were surely hoping it would have been the polarizing Kevin Falcon – have been all over this issue.

“Harper’s doughnut shop medicare shows lack of leadership on health,” one press release trumpeted. They’re right, of course. We need to fund our hospitals adequately, or we’ll be facing more scenarios like this – and not just at Royal Columbian – in the future. And while this situation is so bizarre it could provide enough jokes for a standup routine, the truth is it’s better for all of us if the only kidneys in our chili are of the bean variety.

Clark’s appeal is widespread IN THE HOUSE KEITH BALDREY

T

he B.C. Liberal party’s decision to adopt a weighted voting system for choosing their next leader was supposed to help candidates such as George Abbott, but the system showed the wide appeal of Christy Clark more than anything. Clark won the leadership by a narrow margin – 52 per cent versus 48 per cent – over Kevin Falcon, but a riding-by-riding analysis of the vote shows her victory was not quite as narrow as that result would indicate. The weighted voting system assigned every riding 100 points, which meant all ridings counted the same no matter how many party members voted in the riding. The 223 members in Vancouver-Hastings had as much clout as the 3,210 members in Surrey-Newton. One thing that is quickly apparent from look at a ridingby-riding breakdown is how well Clark did in NDP territory. On the final count, Clark won every NDP-held riding except two. In many cases, her lead over Falcon was substantial enough to give her almost twice

the points from the riding as went to Falcon. She took almost 59 per cent of the points in NDP ridings, compared to Falcon’s 42 per cent. That accounted for almost half of her overall point total. She also beat Falcon in the suburbs of Metro Vancouver (eight ridings to six on the final count), the Interior and North (12 to eight), Vancouver (eight to three), Surrey (five to three) and Vancouver Island (12 to two). She even narrowly took more ridings than Falcon in the Fraser Valley and the Okanagan. Clark also bested Falcon in ridings that saw large sign-ups of members. In ridings with more than 1,000 voters, she came out on top by a margin of seven to five over Falcon. Clark’s victory got an early push from the supporters of Mike de Jong, almost half of whom picked her as their second choice. On the final count, she got second-choice support from about one-third of those who backed George Abbott. In other words, Clark’s support was fairly widespread (though not necessarily that deep) and not confined to one particular area of the province. There were only a couple of areas (the west side of Vancouver, the odd pocket in the Interior) where she failed to attract much support. The breadth of her support may bode well for her when she

Questions about Nestle’s stand

Dear Editor:

Re: Free choice is paramount, Letters to the editor, The Record, Feb. 26. While Nestle Waters Canada may be right in challenging some of the online figures I mentioned in my Feb. 23 letter in The Record about bottled water vs. tap water, I detect a bit of statistical manipulation in the company’s response that more than 75 per cent of plastic beverage bottles were recycled last year. My information is that only about 20 per cent of plastic water bottles are being recycled, with the rest adding to waste disposal problems. But by tossing in the figures for water bottles with all other beverage bottles, Nestle ensures that any meaningful comparison of reports becomes impossible. Further, in his Feb. 26 letter in The Record, John Challinor II, Nestle Waters Canada director of ◗Clark Page 7 corporate affairs, states that the company does not

sell its bottled water in vending machines to school boards. I never claimed that it did. Still, the students who tried to turf remarkably profitable bottled water out of their school should be pleased that it took action by one of the company’s big guns to reach a compromise that favours Nestle. And when the school is replaced in a few years, the school board has ruled, the bottled water deal will end. It’s heartwarming to note that at no time does Mr. Challinor mention any pecuniary interest in the issue, saying that the company is acting solely on behalf of the right of school board staff and students to consume the beverage of their choice in school board facilities, unencumbered by misinformed environmental activists, elected officials and trade unionists. The wording of that suggests that Nestle would accept consumption of bottled water, pumpkin juice or even beer, just as long as there is an alternative to that dangerously non-profit tap water. ◗Water Page 7

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Water is a serious concern ◗ continued from page 6

Mr. Challinor also reports that according to some independent research, bottled water has the smallest carbon footprint of any bottled beverage. Surely finding that water is environmentally friendly – whether delivered by pipe, bottle, truck, rainfall or as ice cubes – should be expected. With our climate, we should be thankful. Tony Eberts, New Westminster

Uptown history fascinating Dear Editor:

Re: Uptown: Where cows once roamed, The Record, Feb. 23. I was fascinated to read of the new display in the Westminster Centre celebrating the history of Hollywood hospital. This is a unique example of a commercial developer taking the time and effort to commemorate the historical importance of a city landmark. Kudos to Bart Slotman and the Uptown Property Group. I plan to enjoy the displays for years to come. Marvin Lemke, New Westminster

Don’t tell us how to live

Dear Editor:

Re: Trustees failed both students and the planet, Our View, The Record, Feb. 26. Whether you are a “green” follower or not, the government shouldn’t be dictating what people can and can’t drink. We are talking about water. People can make up their own mind.

These students have done a good job and showed lots of enthusiasm, but their sights are set too far. They should be free to express their opinions, but they shouldn’t be forcing their views on everyone else. They should focus on promoting recycling, not hating on some big evil corporation as it seems to be. What next, let’s ban lead pencils? Then paper? You have to draw a line somewhere. We don’t need to be told how to live our lives. Tyler Rebalkin, by e-mail

Market is full of promise

Dear Editor:

Re: Market was disappointing, The Record, Letters to the editor, Feb. 26. Rome wasn’t built in a day! The new owners of River Market have put a lot of time, energy and money into getting the market where it is today. The residents of New Westminster are ecstatic with how everything is coming along and welcome Donald’s Market with open arms. Donald’s products are of high quality, we appreciate the variety and the staff is pleasant and welcoming. If you think the current prices in Donald’s are exorbitant, perhaps you should revisit prices at Whole Foods, Choices, Granville Island Market and Lonsdale Market. Most of us are in no way disappointed with the outcome. We have faith in the new owners and look forward to more growth in the near future. Amanda Nordman, New Westminster

Clark: Can she unite the Liberals? ◗ continued from page 6

gets around to calling a general election. Clark’s victory explodes the myth that, among B.C. Liberal voters, she was strong only in urban or suburban regions. ◗ Christy Clark’s main message during her successful campaign was her desire to bring real change to the B.C. Liberal government. So how does that translate into changes at the cabinet table? Because she had the support of only one MLA – Harry Bloy – Clark doesn’t really owe many people any favours. But the political reality of keeping her coalition party together means she must keep key supporters of rival Kevin Falcon in the fold. So don’t expect cabinet

stalwarts such as Falcon, Rich Coleman, Pat Bell, Shirley Bond, Barry Penner or George Abbott to form an exodus from the head table. But I’m not so sure certain others – notably Kevin Krueger and perhaps Iain Black, Murray Coell, Ida Chong, Randy Hawes, and even Colin Hansen – should feel totally secure in their posts. To demonstrate real change, Clark is going to have to bring in some new faces. And that means some current ministers have to pay the ultimate price. Her real challenge, however, is dealing with two independent MLAs – Bill Bennett and Blair Lekstrom – who left the B.C. Liberal caucus on unhappy terms. Clark has been criticized as being a threat to party

unity and of being the kind of leader who could wreck the so-called free enterprise coalition. Bringing Bennett and Lekstrom back into caucus – perhaps not cabinet – would go a long way to show that maintaining party unity is indeed something she is capable of. The night of her leadership win, all the MLAs joined her on the stage in a show of at least public unity. Watching from the floor was Bennett – who seems ready to rejoin his colleagues. But he has to be invited back first – and the new premier might want to think about asking her caucus to do just that. Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global B.C.

◗ HOMELESSNESS

Locals weather the cold snap BY BRENT RICHTER REPORTER brichter@royalcityrecord.com

Despite record cold temperatures on Thursday night, New Westminster’s homeless population seems to have weathered the night OK. Police, hospitals and New Westminster’s emergency weather shelter are all reporting a steady night with no need for extra services. Salvation Army Capt. Dave Macpherson, who runs the shelter, said about 12 people came in from the cold for the night, much fewer than expected and part of a trend that has worse weather yet fewer shelter visits than previous years. “We’ve been open more nights than last year already. Last year we were only open about 25 times. This year, we’ve already been open well

more than that,” he said. “We’re getting about 10 to 12 people per night. It’s actually a little light. We can take up to 40 people, and we would typically show around 20.” Macpherson ventures several guesses as to why, including a dry cold being more tolerable than a damp cold, but he said he suspects there are more people finding their way into affordable housing in the area. What’s more, he said, he sees more affordable housing with supports like addiction and mental health care in the Royal City than he used to. “All over the Lower Mainland there is a need for more affordable housing with supports,” he said. “To its credit, New Westminster is, I think, ahead of most areas in the Lower Mainland in this regard and working very hard to provide as many facilities as they can, I think.”

The Fraser Health Authority reported no admissions to Royal Columbian Hospital as a result of Thursday’s cold. Insp. Phil Eastwood, in the New Westminster Police Service administrative division, said no officers on patrol Thursday night reported any homeless-related issues or weatherrelated calls for service. As for actual numbers of people without a home in New West, the 2008 Metro Vancouver Homeless Count put New West’s homeless population at 124. Macpherson said that number likely falls far short of the actual number of people without a steady place live. “You can probably double that to have a real reflection of homelessness in your community. A lot of folks just ◗Homeless Page 10

Parking meter time shortened

Twenty parking meters near Royal Columbian Hospital will soon be restricted to two-hour time limits. Council has approved a change to the parking meters, which have had a 10-hour time limit. Staff recommended the two-hour time limit in order to increase turnover at parking meters around the medical buildings and the Royal Columbian Hospital. According to a staff report, there are 87 parking meters in Sapperton that have 10-hour parking restriction, including some on East Columbia, Keary and Sherbrooke streets. There are also 86 more on-street parking

stalls in Sapperton with a maximum two-hour (or less) time limit. Coun. Betty McIntosh wants the city to communicate the changes to Royal Columbian Hospital because some of its employees use the onstreet parking. She said there is space available in the parking lot near the hospital and it’s cheaper than parking all day at the on-street parking. Council has also approved a staff recommendation to have staff monitor the Sapperton pay station project for six months to see if the new meters help address parking demands adjacent to Sapperton Park.

In October, council asked staff to review and report on the feasibility of providing parking on the south and west lanes around Sapperton Park. A staff report notes that the current laneway is less than five metres wide, so it’s not wide enough to provide parking. In order to provide parking, the pavement would need to be widened by about 2.5 metres, which would cost about $30,000. The city will be installing the first automated, centralized pay station on East Columbia, between Sherbrooke and Braid streets. – Theresa McManus

illicum Toastmasters in New Westminster is lending its voice to an international con-

test. “Tillicum Toastmasters joins more than 12,500 Toastmasters clubs from around the world, which are participating in the 2011 Toastmasters International Speech Contest during March,” said an e-mail from Julian Worker, the group’s vice-president of public relations. “It is the world’s largest speech contest, with more than 30,000 presenters in 113 countries vying to become the next world champion of public speaking. The contest is free and open to the public.” The International Speech Contest begins at the local club level in March and then proceeds through the area, division, district and final levels. Tillicum Toastmasters will kick off the process on Monday, March 7, when a winner will be chosen from New Westminster to represent Tillicum Toastmasters in the next round. “This was my second time entering a Toastmasters speech contest and I was really happy with how it turned out,” said Mariam Larson, the 2010 Tillicum Toastmaster’s speech contest winner. “Every time I try something new at Toastmasters, I learn something new – and have fun doing it.” Tillicum Toastmasters meets at 1630 Edinburgh St. on most Mondays between 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. More information is available at http://tillicum.freetoasthost.ws/

Experts help city take it off Celebrity trainers from CBC’s Village on a Diet series will be in the city for a rally this weekend BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

Some of the celebrity trainers from CBC’s Village On A Diet television series will be visiting the Royal City this weekend. They’ll be visiting New Westminster on Sunday, March 6 as part of the Healthy Weight Loss Challenge, which started Feb. 7. The 260 participants have already lost nearly 500 pounds. “The rally is designed to inspire and motivate participants as they continue on their journey to health and wellness,” said Sandy Earle, New Westminster’s active communities programmer. “While we’ll be celebrating the success of the 260 Healthy Weight Loss Challenge participants, the event is open to anyone who wants to make some healthy changes

in their life.” The one-hour rally will get underway on March 6 at 1 p.m. at Queen’s Park Arenex. Guests will include: celebrity trainers Mike Veinot and Garfield Wilson and participants from CBC’s Village On A Diet; registered dietician Lauren Williams from the Eating for Energy team; Mayor Wayne Wright, who participated in the City of New Westminster’s staff weight loss challenge in 2010; and local fitness instructors and physiotherapists, who will answer questions from rally participants. “Our Healthy Weight Loss Challenge has caught the attention of the producers of CBC’s Village On A Diet who were impressed with this local initiative,” Earle said. “This is a great opportunity for our community to show their support for participants and get motivated to tackle their own wellness goals. Everyone is invited.” Having completed a successful Biggest Loser corporate challenge for city employees in December 2010, the City of New Westminster launched a community challenge. Over the course of 12 weeks, 82 city

employees lost 692 pounds. In addition to weight check-ins every two weeks, all participants in the challenge received a package of information about losing weight sensibly, eating properly and increasing activity. Mini-challenges are offered between weigh-ins to help people stay focused and motivated and to allow them to win draw prizes. “We are very excited about this,” Earle said about the rally. “We are hoping to get a really good turnout.” The rally will be “short and sweet” as it starts at 1 p.m. and must wrap by 2 p.m. “I think it is going to be great. I am going to be looking forward to seeing these trainers in action,” Earle said. “They are going to share their two cents worth.” The Healthy Weight Loss Challenge is also known as the Biggest Loser Challenge. Out of respect for the fact that the Biggest Loser and Village on a Diet are shown on different television networks, promotional materials for this rally featuring Village on a Diet trainers have referred to it as the Healthy Weight Loss Challenge. www.twitter.com/TheresaMcManus

NWSS makes its mark at jazz festival THE LIVELY CITY JULIE MACLELLAN

T

hose overachieving teenagers are at it again. New Westminster Secondary School students came home from the recent Envision Jazz Festival with a host of awards. The school’s senior jazz choir captured first place, competing against eight other senior secondary school jazz choirs from around the Lower Mainland with three numbers: Send In The Clowns, Don’t Be On the Outside, and Storm. The choir is led by teacher Kelly Proznick, who gathers the students for rehearsals at 7:30 a.m., three mornings a week. “I never leave a rehearsal with that group frustrated,” Kelly wrote in an e-mail to The Record. “I always leave rehearsals feeling like we got something done, raised our standards and made some good music together. They

all are so dedicated and focused, and so much fun to work with.” Choir members Jesse deCoste and Cora Balas received senior jazz soloist awards as well. NWSS students received several other awards at the festival as well. Tristan Popowich and Billy Lee, both Grade 10 students, were awarded scholarships to summer jazz programs. Grade 11 student Kazumasa Takasugi was chosen as the best senior trumpet player, while Grade 11 student William Chernoff received the best senior bass player award. Grade 12 student Nebyu Yohannes was named the best senior trombonist and best overall musician of the festival, earning a $1,000 scholarship to the Capilano University jazz program. Congratulations to the students and teachers. I must say, the more I learn about the music program at NWSS, the more convinced I am I really wish I could go back to high school! In fact, come to think of it, maybe I’ll try going undercover. The fact that I’m far more than

twice the age of all the other students wouldn’t give me away, would it? (Thanks to Karen Zukas-Quinn for keeping me informed about all those fabulous local teens. I love good-news e-mails!)

Musical backers

The Moonrakers Pub gave a welcome helping hand to New Westminster Secondary School’s musical theatre efforts. The pub raised $800 for the school with a recent fundraising luncheon in support of the NWSS production of Grease, which ran at Massey Theatre this past weekend to packed houses and great acclaim. On Thursday, Feb. 17, Moonrakers hosted a musical luncheon – donating $5 from every lunch sold to the school, and entertaining customers with performances by some cast members. Kudos to everyone involved in the project – seeing businesses support the arts is always a wonderful thing.

Students get inventive CLASS ACT

T

ALFIE LAU

here are a bunch of budding MacGyvers in the New Westminster Homelearners’ Program. According to teacher Jodie Haraga, the Grade 3 and 4 group of students are making something out of nothing. During class, the students “took apart” small electronic appliances that no longer work and then created robots that can be auctioned off for charity. The project was a means to motivate students to read for information and write informative and descriptive texts in class. On Wednesday, Feb. 23, during the lunch hour, the robots were auctioned off and the proceeds donated to a local charity. “We scoured local newspapers in search of various non-profit organizations in New Westminster who would benefit from this,” writes Haraga. “After researching

several charities, the class voted to designate the New Westminster Firefighters (Charitable Society) as our choice.” (For those people who don’t remember MacGyver, the character played by Richard Dean Anderson was the star of a 1980s and ’90s show shot in Vancouver. He was able to escape danger and mayhem by transforming ordinary items into extraordinary items, weapons or explosives. MacGyver could turn a toaster into a robot and have enough left to create a car, too.)

New Westminster district parents’ advisory council e-mailed to say that local fundraising has resulted in five new Smart Boards in the district’s future. “The John Robson PAC has recently raised funds and made a motion at their February meeting to purchase three more Smart Boards for their school,” writes Johansen. “The F.W. Howay PAC recently passed a motion at their February meeting to purchase two more Smart Boards for their school.” That fundraising comes on the heels of a November 2010 announcement that Westminster Shrine Club No. 8 has recently pledged $4,650 towards the purchase of Smart Boards in the district. “The best way to describe Smart Boards is that they are an interactive white board that uses touch detection for user input,” writes Johansen. “Students are able to use the Smart Board to engage in ‘handson’ learning in all subjects by moving pictures, objects and numbers around on the smart board to solve problems.” Do you have a good-news item from local schools? Around Town: European adventure for local ballet aficionados ◗ continued from page 11

their feet when they really like a performance – and there was a lot of foot stomping taking place at the performances. New Westminster native Reid Anderson, who has been the artistic director of the Stuttgart Ballet since 1996, invited his former teacher to attend. In addition to sessions held during the day that were attended by dance experts from around the world, the event featured performances by five of the world’s greatest ballet companies. “At first I said, I couldn’t make it,” said Kirkwood. “He said, ‘You have to be here, you will never see

anything like this again.’” Kirkwood agreed to attend and travelled to Germany with Susan Anderson (Reid’s sister and Kirkwood’s former student) and Lynette Lattimer (a former student with whom Anderson danced when he was growing up). “When we were coming back, I said to Lynette, ‘can you believe I almost missed this?’” Kirkwood recalled. “She said, ‘Reid wouldn’t have let you do that.’” The celebration included jam-packed days that included information sessions attended by experts from around the world. Karen Kain, artistic director of the National Ballet of

Canada, was one of those in attendance. “They gathered about 60 artistic directors of ballet companies from around the world,” said Kirkwood. During one of those sessions, a man from Poland voiced concern about his country’s inability to attract male dancers. Kirkwood offered some thoughts on ways of attracting more boys to dancing. “Our Royal City Youth Ballet is going on 25 years soon. We had no boys to begin with,” she said. You know they are out there. There is that stigma some people have that boys shouldn’t dance.” Evenings included per-

formances by ballet companies from the Netherlands, Australia, China, Canada and the United States. Lesley Telford, who trained with Kirkwood, is now a soloist for the Netherlands Dans Theater, performed at the celebration. “It was so inspiring,” Kirkwood said about the world-class performances. In addition to performances by large ballet companies, the celebration also included performances by smaller companies. “Somebody was performing at all times,” Kirkwood said. “It wasn’t just ballet. There was a lot of wonderful contemporary work.”

Despite his busy schedule, Anderson made time each day for his guests from Canada. “We rendezvoused at a restaurant twice a day,” Kirkwood said. “It was very important to him that we were there.” Kirkwood visits Anderson in Germany every couple of years, having last visited two years ago for her former student’s 60th birthday. Kirkwood was also thrilled to have the opportunity to watch some of the classes underway at the Stuttgart ballet school

Called off: The final day of the Tier 2 youth field lacrosse provincial championships at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex-West was postponed due to snow on Saturday.

Douglas misses men’s final and spot at volley nationals Douglas College won a bronze medal in men’s volleyball at the B.C. Colleges’ provincial championships in Kelowna Saturday. The Douglas Royals came back to defeat Vancouver Island University in a marathon 3-2 consolation final 15-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-18, 15-9. It was the first medal for the Douglas men’s volleyball program in recent memory. Defence played a key factor in the win for Douglas. The Royals outdigged the Mariners and registered twice as many blocks in the backand-fourth contest. Burnaby freshman libero Jordan Or had a team and career-high 23 of the Royals’ 52 digs in the final. Outside hitter Matt Lieuwen was named the Royals’ player of the game, registering a team-high 13 kills. Brendan Patterson also had 13 kills along with seven digs. Burnaby North grad Jeff Taylor chipped in with eight kills for Douglas.

The No 2-seeded Royals were upset 3-0 by eventual runner-up Columbia Bible College in their semifinal on Friday. Both teams finished the regular season with identical 9-5 records. Host University of B.C. Okanagan defeated CBC 3-1 in the men’s championship final. Both finalists will advance to the Canadian Colleges’ Athletic Association national championships. “Obviously we’re very disappointed, given we’d beaten them the last three games we played,” said Douglas head coach Brad Hudson. “We knew it might come down to who had the better day, and that’s what happened.” Taylor led Douglas in kills with a game-high 15 winners in the 25-21, 25-18, 26-24 loss to CBC. Lieuwen added 10 kills for the Royals. But the loss was a costly one for the Royals, eliminating Douglas from the national picture. “I think we all knew we were capable of getting to the nationals,” Hudson said. “We know we are right there with the top teams. New West coach to help Junior A Burnaby Lakers

New Westminster Secondary School instructor Ken Bowman will be helping out as an assistant coach with the junior A Burnaby Lakers this season. Bowman, who runs the field lacrosse program at the high school, will be working under new head coach John Wilson and assistant Stuart Watson. “It’s not a full-time commitment,” said Bowman. “(John) has tons of experience and needs to share it. … What we’re hoping for is if we can see positive things at the junior level, kids will want to come to play.”

He also topped all players in total offensive statistics, including blocks, kills and aces. Taylor, a 6-6 outside hitter, was second in overall service aces with 23. In women’s play, Alicia Catalano of Burnaby registered three kills, two service aces, four digs, two blocks and six block assists for the thirdplace Capilano University Blues at the provincials. Capilano defeated the University of the Fraser Valley 3-1 for the bronze medal. Host UBC Okanagan defeated Vancouver Island University 3-2 in the women’s final. The second-year middle hitter from St. Thomas More had six kills and five stuff blocks in the semifinal win. The CCAA men’s volleyball championships will be hosted in Sherbrooke, Que. The women’s nationals will be played in Saint John, N.B. Both nationals will run from March 10 to 12.

◗ CURLING do you have the best

Royal City rink comes up short at senior provincials Four-time provincial senior women’s champion, Kathy Smiley, will have to wait at least one more year for a shot at a fifth B.C. title. The Royal City Curling Club skip finished with a 3-4 record and out of the playdowns at the B.C. senior curling championships in Kamloops last week. The Smiley rink of third Keri Miller, second Rita Imai and lead Linda Brunn

opened the provincial tournament with a two straight wins. But the Royal City foursome struggled the rest of the way, dropping four of its next five draws, including three close games by a total of just four rocks. Smiley fell 7-5 in 10 ends to eventual champion Lynne Noble of Qualicum in Draw 4. She then lost a narrow 65, 11-ender to Kerry Park’s

Christine Jurgenson before again falling 6-5, this time to B.C. finalist Karen Miller of Vancouver in her final match of the round robin. Later, Noble defeated Miller in the provincial final, scoring two rocks in the fourth, sixth and eighth ends to take a 7-4 decision on Saturday. The Canadian senior curling championships will take place in Digby, N.S. from March 19 to 26.

Junior post Kamila Wojciechowski added 19 points and 16 rebounds. “It was definitely not how we envisioned the season unfolding,” said STM head coach Jen Farano. “We were literally two points away from going to the provincials.” With the loss of Der to a recent knee injury, Hughes and Wojciechowksi carried much of the scoring load for the Knights at the Lower Mainland championships. In four games, Hughes scored 110 points,

while averaging almost five steals and nine rebounds a game. Wojciechowski recorded four straight double-doubles, scoring a total of 68 points and 69 assists, including 22 points and 22 boards in STM’s opening 74-44 win over St. Thomas Aquinas. Top-ranked York House fell to No. 2 Britannia 81-71 in the championship final. York House trailed 17-4 in the early going, shooting just one of 20 from the floor to start, while the East Vancouver school was hot all game long, hitting on 58 per cent of its shots. Burnaby guard Alisha Roberts scored 35 points for York House in the final. The AA provincials will be held in Kamloops from March 9 to 12.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
