Poetry capital of B.C.? Poets push for the title, but city’s manager of arts and culture, urges caution BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

Port Moody may be known as the City of the Arts and B.C. may be the Greatest Place on Earth, but a movement is underway to have New Westminster declared as the Poetry Capital of British Columbia. Poetry New Westminster, a newly formed society that includes poet laureate emeritus Don Benson and current poet laureate Candice James, is seeking to have New Westminster dubbed the Poetry Capital of British Columbia. The group has sought support for the designation from the Arts Council of New Westminster and will be asking city council to endorse the proposal. Benson said the idea came about because poetry has “exploded” in New Westminster in the past decade. “We were the first community in British Columbia to have a poet laureate and the first, later on, to have a poet laureate emeritus,” he said. “There are a number of groups that have sprung up around town.” Benson, who was on a committee charged with selecting a new poet laureate and receives poetry submissions for a column from local poets, believes New

Shiloh Sixth Avenue United Church is using its 100th anniversary as a chance to support its Hospitality Project. The Universal Gospel Choir, a Vancouverbased, multi-faith, multicultural community choir, will be performing a benefit concert at the church on Saturday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m. The concert is part of the 100th anniversary celebrations that the church will be holding this year. Bringing the Universal Gospel Choir to Shiloh Sixth Avenue United Church for a benefit concert for the Hospitality Project has been a dream of Shannon Tennant’s for the

past two years. “So much of the music that the choir sings is about the same themes of justice and hope and community that the Hospitality Project is based on that it seemed like a natural tie-in,” said Tennant, the church’s minister. “Besides, their music is amazing.” The Hospitality Project’s mission is to give people the dignity and the hope that comes from a helping hand and the opportunity to serve. Although the Hospitality Project has an advocate and triage receptionist who work Monday to Thursday helping people with their various needs, its busiest days are those the food bank is open. Riding the rails to help save youth Team rides SkyTrain to track down youth who need a hand BY JENNIFER MOREAU REPORTER jmoreau@royalcityrecord.com

Like many commuters, Natalie Harper boards the SkyTrain each morning, but for her, riding the train is her job. On a blustery afternoon, Harper and two colleagues – Greg MacCluskey and Chris Preston – board the westbound train at Production Way station. They wear black jackets, with the word “outreach” down the sleeve, toques pulled over their ears, and backpacks filled with items to help troubled teens – snacks, juice, toques, gloves, socks, resource guides, a list of shelters, a first aid kit and condoms. The trio is part of I-RAYL – Inter Regional At-Risk Youth Link, an award-winning group of youth outreach workers who “ride the rails” looking for lost and troubled teens. “We’re looking for those youth who are loitering, kind of looking for something that’s happening,” Harper says. I-RAYL helps kids, 19 and under, who are dealing with poverty, family problems, homelessness, mental illnesses and addiction. They may have dropped out of school or are trading sex for basic needs or drug habits. I-RAYL often connects the kids to other groups that help; like the Youth Hub and St. Leonard’s in Burnaby or the Purpose Society in New Westminster. The train hums along the Millennium Line, and the group gets off at Gilmore station. “The first thing we do is check out the platform,” Harper says. They are looking for kids left that don’t seem to be going anyplace in particular. Then they descend the escalator. “When we come down to the street level of the station, we look around,” Harper says. “We check out the bus loops.” There are five I-RAYL workers in total. They start their day in the New Westminster office of Pacific Community Resources, the organization the runs the program. They usually split the region in two, with Metrotown dividing east and west. They spend the day riding the lines, covering Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, New

Keeping kids on track: From left, Chris Preston, Greg MacCluskey and Natalie Harper, members of the I-RAYL team, an award-winning outreach program where youth workers ride the SkyTrain lines, looking for lost and troubled teens. Westminster and Richmond. Looking for at-risk youth is a bit like tracking wildlife. The team watches for tracks – tags or empty beer cans, for instance – that may indicate teens have been in the area. Numbers increase when the weather improves, and youth tend to travel all over the Lower Mainland. Some of the hot spots are around malls or SkyTrain stations that connect to main bus routes. Broadway station in Vancouver, Metrotown and Lougheed in Burnaby and Surrey Central are all main spots where youth congregate. New Westminster is not a particularly busy municipality for the team, but they do note changes when youth migrate. “Right now, we’re having more contact with youth at the Columbia Station,” MacCluskey notes.

Kids usually hang out at New Westminster station, but have moved to Columbia probably because of construction. In New Westminster, they often see teens coming from or going to Surrey. “So trends like that, we tend to notice,” MacCluskey says. But Gilmore is quiet on this Wednesday afternoon, so they return to the platform and head east. When the workers do come across teens, they figure out if they are at-risk by talking to them and analyzing non-verbal cues. They also keep an eye out for older people who may be hanging out with vulnerable kids for the wrong reasons, and they alert the police if necessary. The workers meet about 800 to 1,000 youth each month or about 30 to 50 kids a day. They’ve built relationships with a lot of the youth, so they can sometimes

spot missing teens. For example, they recently got a call about a teenager who hadn’t been home in four days, and they spotted him on the SkyTrain that night. “We made sure he was OK. People were quite worried about him. He said he was going home that night,” MacCluskey recalls. “We have a very good ongoing relationship with this kid.” The I-RAYL program started as a crime prevention pilot project in 2008, but secured ongoing Ministry of Children and Family Development funding last November. The initiative caught the eye of B.C.’s watchdog for children and youth, Mary Ellen TurpelLafond, who presented an excellence award to I-RAYL for innovative services. The work I-RAYL does sometimes goes beyond helping

youth. The workers are trained and equipped to deliver first aid, so if there is an emergency on the SkyTrain, they can be the first to respond. In fact, a couple of the workers were also awarded for helping an assault victim on the SkyTrain. Harper loves her job because it’s never the same day twice. “It’s definitely not your conventional office job,” she says, adding it’s the only program of its kind in Canada. “Youth today are very transient along the SkyTrain system,” Harper says. “(They) fall through the cracks because they’re not rooted in one community. I like to think we provide a bit of filler for that gap.” For more on I-RAYL, see Jennifer Moreau’s blog, Community Conversations, at www.burnabynow. com – click on the Opinion tab and follow the link under Blogs.

waiting to get into the food bank, the program’s other goals were to create a place for community and to partner with other community groups so they may be able to connect with people they may not otherwise be able to reach. A teacher from the New Westminster School District attends to support adults wanting to upgrade their education to grades 11 and 12, and New Westminster Family Place staff provides a children’s drop-in and family resource centre. “It was way more successful than we envisioned,” Karpoff said. “Right away, agencies started saying, ‘Can we come?’“ Community health nurses, dental hygienists and representatives from various agencies such as social services and the Immigrant Services Society are among the people who attend to provide information and direct people to resources they may want to access. “This is only part of it. We have a lot of people who come who are not going to the

food bank,” Karpoff said. “There are some people who just come to chat, have a coffee, use a phone.” In addition to giving people a chance to be part of something, the Hospitality Project has also helped by providing volunteer opportunities to its clients and other community members. The Hospitality Project is holding a draw for tickets to the benefit concert next week. Have your say on United Boulevard extension BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

TransLink is set to embark on Round 2 of its public consultation about the proposed United Boulevard extension. The City of New Westminster has helped TransLink develop a threephased communication and public consultation program that will get underway this weekend. “The whole consultation process has been designed in phases,” said Blair Fryer, the city’s manager of communications. “All of the options that were presented in the fall have been removed from the table. They are starting fresh.” Phase 1 of the process, which is to identify community concerns and ideas, will kick off with a workshop this Saturday. “The first of two phases of public meetings will be in workshop format to encourage dialogue and to solicit ideas from the community,” stated a March 7 staff report to council. “These meetings will be advertised on various media and participation will be open to the public at large.” All meetings will take place at the Sapperton

Pensioners Hall, which is located at 318 Keary St. The public is invited to share their transportation concerns at a workshop being held on Saturday, March 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. That will be followed by a workshop on Wednesday, March 16 from 6:30 to 9 p.m., when people will be able to share their ideas about solutions to transportation concerns. Phase 2, which will help to refine the concepts, includes two meetings: Wednesday, April 13 from 6:30 to 9 p.m.; and Saturday, April 30 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Fryer said the time between Phase 1 and Phase 2 meetings will give TransLink time to take the ideas presented in Phase 1 and turn them into concepts that people can consider in Phase 2. Phase 3 will identify the recommended solution and community mitigation strategy. That meeting will take place on Wednesday, May 11 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. “The new schedule allows more time for public engagement to discuss transportation and neighbourhood issues associated with the project,” stated a staff report. “The program objective is to arrive

at a recommended solution for UBE in May 2011. If a solution that meets both (the) city’s and TransLink’s requirements is identified, TransLink will then seek council’s endorsement to move forward with the project in accordance with federal funding timelines.” According to TransLink, improving the connectivity, mobility and accessibility of United Boulevard at Brunette Avenue (United Boulevard Extension) is important to creating a safe and reliable North Fraser Perimeter Road corridor for people and goods movement. TransLink held several stakeholder and public consultation meetings in late 2010, but the proposals on the table weren’t supported

by community members or city council. “We heard from residents, businesses and the broader public, as well as the City of New Westminster, about concerns for the options presented and impacts on the local neighbourhood,” said information posted on TransLink’s website. “These options did not meet public or city council approval.” TransLink has deemed the North Fraser Perimeter Road to be its “highest priority project” for the movement of goods. The federal government has made $65 million in funding available for the United Boulevard extension portion of this route because of safety and “reliability benefits” generated

by making improvements at the single lane Bailey Bridge and eliminating the at-grade rail and road conflicts.

United nay: Above, previous options for the extension that were rejected by the City.

Turning a blind eye to money laundering?

In fact, most of sure what these anonymous individthe concerns raised about the megauals were up to, it’s hard to believe casino are about how it may take away that none of those transactions were an from other gambling casinos in Lower attempt to hide dirty money. Mainland cities.

OUR VIEW

Criminal activity of one kind or another has been associated with casinos since their inception; that transactions of this nature take place at facilities in the Lower Mainland is hardly a surprise. What’s startling is that the province has done nothing about it. In the electronic age, large cash transactions are unnecessary. While it may not eliminate the practice entirely, changing the rules to require any customer buying chips in numbers above

a certain cap to use debit and present identification would certainly throw up a significant obstacle. And yet this move doesn’t seem ever to have been seriously entertained by those who oversee casinos. Our leaders in Victoria, and in the cities which have become dependent on such monies, are understandably thirsty for more gaming revenue, but they also purport to be tough on crime. Why not use simple, available technology to address both?

Governments rely on casino money IN THE HOUSE KEITH BALDREY

T

he debate over whether or not a giant casino should be built in downtown Vancouver has shone a bright light on a political reality that some people simply won’t accept. The fact is, governments at all levels have become so heavily dependent on gambling revenues that they now comprise the cornerstone of budgets, and therefore are directly linked to all kinds of public services, from health care to education to capital projects. There are currently 17 casinos in Metro Vancouver, with almost 500 gaming tables and 10,000 slot machines. They generate a lot of money. The provincial government collects more than $1 billion annually from the B.C. Lottery Corporation, which oversees gambling (including lotteries) in the province. About 20 per cent of that money over three years is earmarked for distribution to non-profit organizations and charities (one can certainly argue that the amount should be greater), and a smaller amount is put in a health-care spending account. The proposed casino attached

to the new B.C. Place would be three times the size of the existing Edgewater casino nearby. It would house 1,500 slot machine and 150 gaming tables and employ 2,000 people full-time. As many as 6,000 people are expected to visit the facility every day of the week, generating more than a half billion dollars annually in economic activity. Opponents of the casino claim it would be a stain on the neighbourhood (home to B.C. Place and Rogers Arena, which aren’t exactly calm, quiet places) and would attract criminal behaviour, including money-laundering and gang activity. Plus, it would be a noisy addendum to a sporting facility and would send all the wrong kinds of signals to young people attending a B.C. Lions or Vancouver Whitecaps game. Unfortunately for the opponents, however, is the fact that governments make the decision on whether or not casinos are established, and because the amount of money to be gained from their creation is so enormous and consistent, it’s almost impossible to say no. Municipal governments love having casinos within their borders, as they get a big slice of the revenue pie as well. The municipalities that have casinos get tens of millions of dollars in return, and that funds all kinds of projects and services that might not exist otherwise.

Enough with the politicking

Dear Editor:

The case for why bottled water (and other sugary, carbonated drinks) should be phased out in our schools, sooner rather than later, has already been succinctly made on numerous occasions. However, the alleged conflict of interest by Lori Watt, which is holding up what should be an environmental, not political issue, is just getting more bizarre by the day. Did no one think to check who actually represents water filtration plant workers? It’s not CUPE. It’s the Greater Vancouver Regional District Employee Union. In other words, Ms. Watt’s employer, CUPE B.C., has no vested interest in these plant jobs which would supposedly be benefited. Additionally, with our highly automated water

filtration system, compared to the extremely labourintensive jobs in waste management, there are far more people employed dealing with our waste than ensuring tap water is safe. Combine this with the fact most recycling in the region is handled by contracted out service providers, if there were some secret vested interest in protecting union jobs in this situation, encouraging tap water use and recycling would definitely not be the best strategy. More union jobs are benefited by everyone simply tossing all waste straight in the garbage; perhaps this push for recycling and tap water by Ms. Watt, CUPE and numerous others on all sides of the political spectrum is based on some higher ethics than bottom line accounting. With silly season approaching, Mr. O’Connor’s continued attack on this issue and other Voice ◗Let’s Page 7

Government must help dementia patients, families

Dear Editor:

B.C.’s new premier says that families will be the focus for her government. I would like to introduce Premier Clark to 70,000 families in our province who are on the dementia journey. I am writing not only as a person with Alzheimer’s disease, but as someone who was diagnosed in my 50s, urging our

new premier to continue the government’s commitment to improving the lives of people with dementia and their families. Baby boomers are finding themselves as the “sandwich generation,” working full-time jobs, caring for parents who are living with dementia, as well as supporting children who are still living at home. In some cases, the baby boomer is the one living with dementia, with approximately 10,000 people under the age of 65 currently diagnosed with the disease. There is no cure, and the journey ultimately leads to the need for total care. Family caregivers provide unimaginable amounts of time providing informal or unpaid care. Their journey can sometimes be lonely, isolating and is often frustrating. Support is needed for these families. Inaction will have an enormous impact not only on B.C. families, but on our health-care system. Action to turn the rising tide must happen now. Dementia needs to be on the political agenda, and we need all partners working together.

In fact, gaming has become so big in this province that without it, the provincial and municipal governments would undoubtedly raise taxes – income and/or property – or cut services, or both. That, combined with the realization that gaming revenues have a positive impact on everything from Little League baseball to parent advisory councils to arts groups, is a big reason why opposition to gaming has gradually diminished over the years. Those who insist on painting gambling as some sort of social evil that will ruin the youth of society are missing the larger point: it is an industry that is here to stay, and it will undoubtedly grow as governments use casinos as a convenient crutch to help ward off boosting taxes or cutting services.

NDP: Party shooting itself in the foot over social media passwords issue ◗ continued from page 6

5-YEAR TERM DEPOSIT

Frankly, as someone who will probably never visit the proposed new casino, I’d rather see the casino patrons spend their own money to help pay for health-care, sports teams and arts groups, rather than having the government reach into my pocketbook even further than they do right now. ◗ The furor within the NDP over its insistence that leadership candidates hand over their passwords to social media forums such as Facebook and Twitter may be resolved by the time you read this, but nevertheless the party has demonstrated its unerring ability to shoot itself in the foot. One candidate, Nicholas Simons, has balked at disclosing his passwords, arguing that not only would his privacy be violated, but so too would be the privacy of individuals he has com-

municated with on those social media sites. Simons is not an unknown commodity. He has been vetted already by the party’s candidate screening policy, and he has been elected twice. He represents the party as an MLA, and is delegated to perform various duties on behalf of the party. As a duly elected MLA, one presumes the party already has a fair degree of trust in him. As well, parliamentary convention dictates that all MLAs are to be presumed “honourable members” of the legislature. So why doesn’t the NDP treat him as such, and presume him to be an “honourable member”? Violating his privacy would seem to run counter to that. City lobbies for expansion to RCH

The City of New Westminster is urging the provincial government to move onto the next phase of planning for Royal Columbian Hospital expansion. On Monday night, Coun. Jaimie McEvoy proposed that the city ask the province to move forward with expansion of RCH. “It’s been in front of the government for months,” he said about the plan. The motion comes a week after

patients needed to be treated in the Tim Hortons outlet in RCH because the emergency department was full. Six stretchers and medical equipment were set up in the dining area for about three hours. “We can laugh about the Tim Hortons part of it – when you start looking provincewide, it is a problem the way people are being accommodated,” McEvoy said. RCH has submitted a concept expansion and renovation plan to

the provincial government that would address the need for space at RCH. Fraser Health worked with the Ministry of Health Services to finalize and submit the site concept plan for the redevelopment of Royal Columbian Hospital. A Fraser Health representative told The Record last summer that it was in the “business planning stage” and was considering a couple different scenarios. – By Theresa McManus

Benson: City has high percentage of poets ◗ continued from page 1

Westminster has more poets per capita than any other city in B.C. “It’s a matter of image,” said Benson, noting New Westminster was once known as the City of Champions. “We could justify that at the time. That’s gone by the wayside. Times have changed.” Benson said New Westminster city council would need to support designating New Westminster as the Poetry Capital of British Columbia in order for it to occur. “The word is out that both Victoria and Surrey want to be considered the same thing,” he said. “That is through the poetry grapevine.” The poetry community is alive and well in the Royal City, where groups like Slam Central, Poetic Justice and World Poetry Night Out meet regularly. Benson believes the time is right for New Westminster to claim its rightful place as the Poetry Capital of British Columbia. Coun. Jaimie McEvoy said he’s supportive of the

concept, but wants city staff to review the matter to see if there’s a basis for supporting the designation. “For me the issue is if you have a vibrant activity in the city, in this case it could be poetry, how do you recognize it in a way that gives inspiration,” he said. “You might not say Poetry Capital at the end of the day. You might come up with something else.” Whatever is decided, McEvoy said there’s no doubtthatNewWestminster has a vibrant poetry scene and history. “The poetry scene in New Westminster is fantastic and dates back 150 years,” he said. McEvoy raised the issue at Monday’s council meeting, but some council members hadn’t seen any of the correspondence on the matter so deferred the issue. “There is a bit of bravado,” he said about designating the city as the Poetry Capital of British Columbia. “That bravado is completely consistent with everything that goes on around us.” The Arts Council of New Westminster has been asked

to support Poetry New Westminster’s request for the city to be designated as the Poetry Capital of British Columbia. The board of directors will discuss the request at its next meeting. “I am a little bit cautious about it. I would like to have a fuller discussion. Around the table, I think we have different opinions,” said Rick Carswell, president of the Arts Council of New Westminster. “My concern is process. We have to have process. We are interested in the concept. We want to take a look at it.” GregMagirescu, thecity’s manager of arts and cultural development, offered his thoughts on the designation in a memo to city

council. He asked council to “carefully consider the full implication of such a selfappointed designation”. “In my opinion, unless we are legitimately awarded such a designation by a recognized third-party literary organization or professional entity, self-designation may subject us to scrutiny in the long run,” he wrote. Magirescu noted that it could easily be argued that several cities in Canada could claim the “poetry capital” title. He also suggested the city’s decision to give itself the Poetry Capital of B.C. could work against it in the future, when seeking grants from the federal government.

Welcoming the Navy? City wants to find ways to allow Navy ships to visit during Hyack Festival

The City of New Westminster wants to know what it would take to allow the Canadian Navy to sail into the Royal City. In 2010, the City of New Westminster granted Freedom of the City to HMCS Discovery in honour of the Navy’s centennial anniversary. The Navy used to visit New Westminster for events such as Hyack Festival but stopped a number of years ago because the mooring facilities were no longer in a condition able to accommodate the vessels. “We are in the process now of finding out what we would have to do to accommodate the ships,” said Mayor Wayne Wright. “They want to start bringing some of the warships back in.” Jim Lowrie, the city’s director of engineering, said the city is doing some due diligence to determine what would be necessary to berth the various sized vessels.

FREE HOME EVALUATIONS Remax Advantage Realty 102 - 321 6th St., N.W.

Longtime New Westminster resident Baj Puri has been a liaison between the city and the Navy. He is a past president of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corp and a past president of the Hyack Festival Association. “I had been bringing Navy ships for Hyack Festival for many years,” he said. “The last couple of years, no ships came.” Puri said that’s because the city’s wharf facilities aren’t at the standard needed and because Navy ships and their crews have been on duty in other parts of the world. “They have been discussing sending a ship. I am not too sure it will happen because we have no docks,” he said. “There is money involved – somebody has to pay to drive extra piles.” While the Navy is very interested in visiting New Westminster, Puri is doubtful it will happen for this year’s Hyack Festival. “I personally don’t think a ship would come this year because of this. The Navy liaison officer met me. We went and looked at the docks,” he said. “It is all dilapidated.” – Theresa McManus

Artists make a splash T

he new New West Artists group is off to a successful start. Hundreds of people from all over the Lower Mainland turned out at River Market over the weekend of Feb. 11 to 13 to enjoy the group’s launch exhibition. Andrea Fergusson, president of the group, noted in a press release that almost $4,000 worth of art work was sold by group members over the weekend – a huge accomplishment, especially when you consider that all the work for sale was offered at under $100 apiece. Andrea also reports that the group is continuing to grow rapidly, from 20 members in midJanuary to more than 80 members since its launch. The group’s next goal is to find a physical space in downtown New West that can encompass studio spaces for rent, an artist-run gallery, workshops, classes and possibly even a café. If you would like to donate – financially or in-kind – to help out the work of the group, or if you’re interested in renting a studio space, contact Andrea at 604-349-2902 or by e-mail at president@newwest artists.com. Check out the website at www. newwestartists.com for more.

More artists at work

Artists are at work everywhere in New West, apparently. I’ve just received word about another new artists’ group in the city. Uptown Artists is a new drop-in group that works out of Century House, welcoming anyone ages 50 and over. The group meets the first and third Thursdays of each month from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Spruce Room, and the only charge is a yearly membership to Century House. Memories of Morocco: Susanne Cruickshank with Market at Dusk, one of the acrylic works on display in her show The Road to Marrakech, underway at the Plaskett Gallery at Massey Theatre.

The road to Marrakech Artist’s impressions of Moroccan travel form new exhibition at Plaskett Gallery BY JULIE MACLELLAN REPORTER jmaclellan@royalcityrecord.com

Market at Dusk, she calls it, this acrylic painting that evokes the golden half-light falling over the tents of the Marrakech market square. To an outside observer, it’s a glimpse into an exotic world, transporting the viewer for just a moment to this unknown place half a world away. To Susanne Cruickshank, it’s a very vivid memory of an unsettling moment. The work is part of a new exhibition, The Road to Marrakech, underway at New Westminster’s Plaskett Gallery. It features work by Cruickshank, all inspired by a cruise last year to Morocco and the Canary Islands. She smiles and shrugs a little as she tells the story of Market at Dusk. She was innocently shopping in the market, browsing at a stall, when a vendor

became irate with her, yelling and growing increasingly agitated. Cruickshank tried her best to communicate, but the man grew more hostile and started pushing her. He had scissors, too, she remembers, and she wondered if he was coming after the strap of her camera. Another tourist intervened and called in an interpreter, who figured out that the man was accusing Cruickshank of having taken his picture. She hadn’t, as it turned out – but, while the interpreter was trying to calm the man down, he suggested Cruickshank clear out. She did, taking refuge in a spot overlooking the market, where she could have a drink and watch the scene below. It’s from that vantage point that Market at Dusk was born. Talk with Cruickshank about her work, and you’ll realize that each of her paintings was born in a similar way – from a moment that made her stop and take stock of where she was, absorbing the foreignness of the culture and the landscape. A work called Call to Prayer was born from the sounds of just that – the call to prayer at the mosques. Cruickshank recorded the sound, and its haunting beauty is

evoked in her painting. The building depicted is entirely fictional – but, for Cruickshank, the reality of her art is not about a true-to-life snapshot of a place. “You don’t want a painting of a photo,” she says. “You want an impression of where you’ve been.” She takes plenty of photos when she travels, largely to refresh her memory later, and she isn’t afraid to stop and sketch or even work in pastels when the moment carries her away. The exhibition reflects some of those pastel works – inspired by a stop in Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands, where the eerie beauty of its harsh red volcanic rock captivated Cruickshank. The area also inspired several large works in acrylic. “It gives the sense of breadth in Lanzarote,” she notes. “It gives the sense of expanse. It was just such a different landscape, it really inspired me to do this work.” Cruickshank notes that her palette and her techniques change according to the landscape that gave them birth. found her working with a palette of warm earth tones. A trip to the Netherlands plumbed the depths of green and blue for vast expanses of field and sky. For those works, too, she worked in encaustic – an ancient technique that mixes oil paints with beeswax and dammar varnish, which must be melted together and used while still hot. It is, she admits, not the most pleasant-smelling technique, but it provides a texture and luminosity that appeals to her. For the Road to Marrakech exhibition, her work is in acrylic, but with transfers and pumice and modelling clay mixed in to provide texture. “I’m really all about the surface,”

she says, pointing out how the modelling clay has added depth to some of the landscape work. Her love of texture, she says, is a carryover from her earliest days as an artist, when she worked in both drawing and clay. And she admits with a laugh that she doesn’t stick to one style for long. “I’m always changing,” she says. Or, as she puts it in an artist’s statement: “There is an experimental quality to my creative process, using mixed media, encaustic, collage, transfers and other techniques. The work changes to meet the requirements of each experience to be captured.” Cruickshank, who works from her

False Creek studio, has now turned her attention to a landscape closer to home: Granville Street. She’s been struck by the beauty of many of the old buildings and the “village” feel of the street – not to mention the colours of Vancouver and its rainy landscape. Later this year, she’ll be heading off on an Alaskan cruise with a friend, where she notes she’s likely to discover an entirely new palette. “It’s interesting how your work just changes with each experience that you have,” she says. ◗ The Road to Marrakech is underway at the Plaskett Gallery until April 18. The gallery is open during events at Massey Theatre or by appointment. E-mail info@ masseytheatre.com or call 604-517-5900

for free with a free guest pass, if you’re so inclined. The group focuses on emerging and experienced artists working on canvas or paper – whether that’s drawing, painting or pastels. “Drop in and enjoy the company and encouragement of other artists as you work on your own creations,” said Barbara Hilstad, the group’s interim chairperson, in an e-mail to The Record. “Century House also offers its members a place to display their work and a nice lunch menu.” (As to the latter, I can

testify to the quality of the lunch at Century House. I was there not too long ago as a guest, during another interview, and the lunch was delightful.) Interested? Drop in to Century House on any first or third Thursday and check out the group.

Ready to go: Hyack junior Natasha Lazecki, in white, will get lots of quality court time at the B.C. AAA girls’ basketball championships as New Westminster opens against South Kamloops today at 3:30 p.m. at Capilano University.

Royal men miss medal at college hoop provincials The upset-minded Douglas College Royals finished fourth at the B.C. Colleges’ Athletic Conference men’s provincial basketball championships. The Royals fell 95-80 to Capilano University in the bronze medal final at Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford Saturday. Kadeem Scott led Douglas with 19 points in the consolation final, while Aneetan Braich and Ameet Kaila both contributed 16-point outings. Michael Zayonc led all scorers with 21 points for Capilano.

The Royals upset fourth seed University of B.C. Okanagan 103-86 in the quarter-finals on Thursday. Drew Slaght scored a game-high 28 points for Douglas. Braich added a double-double, scoring 23 points and adding 10 rebounds. In the semifinals, eventual B.C. college champion Vancouver Island University defeated Douglas 102-78. Slaght again led the Royals with 19 points, including three three-pointers, while Scott, Braich and Garrett LingLee all hit for double figures.

For the second time this season, the Burnaby South Rebels had to play second fiddle to R.C. Palmer. South could not overcome a 26-12 first-quarter deficit to the Richmond champs and lost the Lower Mainland AAA high school boys’ basketball final 90-78 to the Palmer Griffins at Douglas College Saturday. Palmer came out on fire, jumping out to a 12-5 lead in the opening two minutes of play. The Griffins then rained a hail of three-pointers on their next four-offive baskets to take what turned out to be an insurmountable lead. “It was of the best starts we’ve ever had,” said winning Palmer coach Paul Eberhardt. Palmer got significant double-digit contributions from its starting six, including Lower Mainland MVP guard Billy Cheng, who led the Griffins with 15 of his team-high 23 points in the first half. Manroop Clair led all scorers with 33 points, but got into foul trouble in the second half and was forced to sit for an extended period before finally fouling out of the game. Clair, a second team tournament all-star, was South’s only bright spot in the first half with 20 points, including three treys and five-of-seven free throws. “We weren’t ready,” said South head coach Greg Matic. “We spent so much time talking about what we needed to do, but our bigs just weren’t ready to go.” First team all-star Ater Degal finished with 22 points for South, including two of his five threepointers and 12 points in a belated fourth-quarter comeback. Palmer beat South to the ball on offence and defence, creating turnovers and second-chance points that kept them in control of the scoreboard, despite the Rebels’ 12-9 advantage from beyond the arc. ◗ B.C. MAJOR MIDGET HOCKEY

First-place Northwest Giants to face Canadians in semifinal BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

The Northwest Giants will face the Greater Vancouver Canadians in a best-of-three B.C. major midget hockey semifinal, beginning Friday, March 11. A week earlier, the Giants locked up a fourth straight regular season title. The Burnaby-based Giants swept its final weekend series 8-0 and 8-2 over the last-place finishers Thompson Blazers in Langley. The Giants finished on top of the 11-team loop with an overall record of 29-4-7, eight points better

than the runner-up Cariboo Cougars. The Giants and Cougars earned first-round byes in the playoffs with their toptwo placing. Alex Kerfoot broke the single-season scoring record of former Giant Jordan Weal, who is now playing with the Regina Pats in the Western Hockey League. Kerfoot tallied 39 goals and 108 total points, breaking Weal’s old mark of 100 points set in the 2007/08 season. However, Kerfoot fell one marker short of breaking Ryan Nugent-Hopkin’s 40-goal single-season mark. Last weekend, the Valley

West Hawks swept its quarter-final series against the Northeast Chiefs. The Canadians eked out a 2-1 win over the South Island Thunderbirds in the pivotal third game in the other quarter-final. The Giants will host Greater Vancouver in the semifinals at the Burnaby Winter Club on Friday at 1 p.m. and again on Saturday at 2 p.m. If necesssary, a Game 3 will be played at Sunday. Game time is scheduled for 9:15 a.m. The Hawks will take on the Cougars in Prince George in the other semi. “We’re all healthy and chomping at the bit,” said Giants head coach Todd Harkins.

Palmer in both the second and third quarters, and held a three-point advantage in overall scoring in the final three periods, but the first-quarter deficit was just too large to make up. “In every aspect of the game (Palmer) was ready to go,” conceded Matic. “We’d score but we just couldn’t defend. … We have to take this as a huge lesson.

Introducing

“They are a physical team, we knew that. We knew what to expect. It shouldn’t have been a surprise to us, but it was.” The Vancouver College Fighting Irish defeated Charles Tupper 72-61 in the consolation final for the third and fourth Lower Mainland berths into the B.C. championships, which will be hosted at the Langley Events Centre, beginning Tuesday, March 15.

◗ BOX LACROSSE

WLA Salmonbellies sign Ontario righthander BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

The New Westminster Salmonbellies mean business this season. The Western Lacrosse Associationclubannounced the transfer of 30-yearold Ontario forward Jeff Zywicki to the senior A club on Monday. “Adding a quality veteran goal scorer like Jeff Zywicki to play alongside the likes of Alex Gajic, Kevin Crowley and Jordan McBride, quite frankly, makes our right side look very good,” said Salmonbellies president and general manager Dan Richardson in a club press

release. “We are very happy to bring a player like Jeff into our lineup. We really think he’s going to help our young snipers with their two-man game.” Last season, Zywicki scored nine playoff goals to help the Washington Stealth win the National Lacrosse League Champion’s Cup. Zywicki has scored 180 goals and garnered 362 points in 76 regular season pro career games. He has played just two games with the Stealth because of an injury this season. Zywicki will be a familiar face with many of the ‘Bellies, having played in the NLL and the summer pro field lacrosse league, as

well as on Canadian world box and field lacrosse national teams. In Canada’s gold-medal win at the world field lax championships over the United States in 2006, Zywicki scored a tournament record 28 goals and was named the best attackman, while also earning a spot on the all-world team. New Salmonbellies head coach Ken Thomas welcomed the 5-10 Ottawa native to the fold. “Jeff’s ability as a very skilled and intelligent player – and more importantly, as a leader of exceptional character – is an exciting addition to the club,” Thomas said.

I’m ready to help reduce our carbon footprint in new ways.

Badminton: Sweet victory, says coach ◗ continued from page 15

highlight, Mawani says that this year is right up there. “I’m very, very proud of the team,”

he said. “(2007) Melody’s first year, that’s got to be the highlight, but I’d say, this was No. 2. It was sweet.”

A family run business does make a difference Quality products, fair honest pricing and excellent service.
