STRANGER DANGER

District issues warning after new incident Girls accosted by four men BY BRENT RICHTER REPORTER brichter@royalcityrecord.com

School District No. 40 is again warning parents about another stranger danger incident near a New Westminster school. According to a March 17 letter to parents from assistant superintendent Al Balanuik, the latest incident happened Wednesday afternoon outside John Robson Elementary School. Balanuik said two Grade 2 girls were sitting on a bench near the duck pond around 5:30 p.m. when four strange men approached. Two of the men then put their hands on the shoulders of the girls. Balanuik said the girls responded by pushing the men’s hands away and running screaming to the home of one of the girls. The girls described the first man as having light brown hair and wearing black pants, a black coat and blue and red hat. The second man who allegedly touched one of the girls is described has having brown skin and black hair, First reported @ wearing baggy RoyalCityRecord.com blue sweat pants and a red sweat shirt. The girls didn’t provide a description of the other men in the group. This latest incident has little in common with several other stranger contact incidents over the last three months, which have typically involved reports of an older man approaching young boys. Some of those incidents have, after investigation, proven to be misunderstandings and there are discrepancies in descriptions of the suspect and vehicles involved. As in every other letter to parents from SD40, Balanuik reminds parents to review safety tips with their kids including: Always travelling in numbers, reporting any suspicious incidents to trusted adults and immediately fleeing any situation that feels dangerous. Anyone with information on this or any other incident is asked to call New Westminster Police Service at 604-525-5411.

City ‘terrorist’ back in Canada BY BRENT RICHTER REPORTER brichter@royalcityrecord.com

A New Westminster man convicted of terrorism charges in the United States has been deported back to the Lower Mainland. Alfred Heinz Reumayr, 61, was ordered out of the United States by an immigration judge and escorted from Los Angeles to Vancouver International Airport by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers following the end of his prison term. Upon arrival in B.C., ICE officers turned Reumayr over to local RCMP. RCMP Sgt. Rob Vermeulen said other than meeting Reumayr at the airport, the RCMP has no further interest in

Reumayr. “We are aware that he is back in Canada. We are aware that he was charged and convicted in the U.S. and we are not aware of any pending charges against him in Canada,” he said. Mark Jette, Reumayr’s former lawyer who fought his client’s extradition to the U.S. declined to comment on Reumayr’s return. Reumayr pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting terrorism transcending national boundaries in March 2008. According to court documents, Reumayr planned to purchase $10,000 in oil futures and then bomb the Trans-Alaska Pipeline on New Year’s Day, 2000, causing a spike in oil prices and allowing him to make a quick

profit. The documents suggest Reumayr estimated he would make $20 million if the bombing was successful in disrupting oil supply to the West Coast. Reumayr conspired with a former Green Beret and explosives expert, Jim Paxton, whom he had met while serving time in a Texas prison for a previous conviction mail fraud. Paxton then turned informant and provided testimony and taped conversations of Reumayr discussing the plan. Reumayr lost an extradition fight in the courts in 2006 and was sentenced to 13 years less time served in 2008. According to ICE spokesperson Lori Haley, Reumayer is barred from entering the U.S. for 20 years.

City shoots for track to be ready for summer BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

The City of New Westminster is hoping to complete the new-and-improved Mercer Stadium track project by the summer. Work on the project was originally set to be complete by March 31, as required by a federal grant that provided one-third of the project’s funding. After the first layer of synthetic surfacing was installed, the poor weather arrived, delaying installation of the second and third layers. “We are very, very close,” said Dean Gibson, the city’s director of parks, culture

and recreation. “For the track surfacing itself we have three layers of synthetic surface to put down. We have one layer down that went down last fall.” New Westminster is the first project on the contractor’s to-do list once the weather is suitable for installation of the synthetic surfaces. “We are ready to go,” Gibson said. ‘We just need the weather to cooperate.” According to Gibson, the work will take about four to six weeks to completion. It’s expected the project would be completed by the summer. New Westminster city council has

approved a staff recommendation asking that the timeline to complete the project under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program be extended until Sept. 1, 2011. The city will accept full responsibility for any costs incurred beyond Oct. 31. “They put the offer on the table of extending the program,” Gibson said about the federal government. “That offer came to our community.” A staff report states that additional work was discovered to address unforeseen site conditions. As a result, council increased the budget by $175,000 to allow the project to proceed as planned, and directed staff

to seek additional funds to offset the city’s contributions. According to a staff report, the city has been awarded an additional $58,333 from the federal government, which represents one-third of the city’s $175,000 contribution. “It’s never expected, it’s always hoped for,” Gibson said about the additional funds. Gibson said the federal contribution will help lighten the city’s direct expenses for the project. The current budget for the Mercer Stadium track reconstruction is $2,085,000.

Witness helps lead cops to suspect in truck theft BY BRENT RICHTER REPORTER brichter@royalcityrecord.com

A New Westminster man found himself in the unenviable position of watching his truck being driven off by an unknown person Monday night. But, thanks to a quick response from New Westminster Police Service and the help of witnesses, the truck is now back with its rightful owner and a man is facing several charges. Police received a 911 call around 10:30 p.m. Monday night reporting the pickup had just been stolen from the 600-block of 12th Street and that the owner’s son was following the alleged thief. After informing police of the direction the truck was travelling in, the son lost sight of his father’s truck. Dispatch radioed officers on patrol, including Const. Tim Callaghan, who was near the 100-block of Eighth Avenue. Callaghan saw the truck speed by but did

not pursue. He radioed fellow officers and began a search of the side streets north of Eighth Avenue. Meanwhile, a local resident in the Sinclair Street area observed a green pickup truck parked on the wrong side of the street and did not recognize it as a vehicle owned by nearby residents. The keen eyewitness saw a man exit the vehicle and toss something on the ground while walking away. Believing that the vehicle was stolen, the witness phoned 911 just as Callaghan drove into the area searching for the suspect. The witness flagged Callaghan down and pointed out the direction of the suspect. Callaghan immediately located the accused and arrested him without incident. Arrested is a 23-year-old Chilliwack man. Police are recommending charges of theft over $5,000, possession of stolen property and driving while prohibited.

Four slashed at party

Four Surrey men were treated for nonlife threatening injuries after being slashed at a New Westminster party early Saturday morning, according to New Westminster Police Service. In a release, Sgt. Gary Weishaar said police were called to private party at a commercial building in the 700-block of Carnarvon Street around 1:30 a.m. Weishaar said suspects in the slashing

had left the scene before police arrived. The four victims, all in their mid-20s, were taken to Royal Columbian Hospital for treatment. The party had about 200 people in attendance. The investigation is ongoing, and no suspect descriptions are available at this time. – Brent Richter

After decades at its Carnarvon Street location, the New Westminster health unit is packing its syringes and stethoscopes and moving uptown. Fraser Health aims to finish moving to the new location at unit 218 in Royal City Centre by May 2. Carolyn King, manager of the health unit, said staff are looking forward to the move and she expects the new location will work better for everyone. “We are very excited to be moving to Royal City Centre,” she said. “The central location with parking and good access to public transit will be great for clients, staff and visitors. Being located in a busy shopping centre will make it easy for people to combine their visit with other errands, including shopping and medical appointments. This will be especially convenient for new moms and families with young children.” Fraser Health has had plans to move the health unit since June of last year when a steering committee undertook an evaluation of space needs for the unit. The new location is technically no larger than the current one at 1,760 sq. m, but the entire facility is now located on one floor,

which Fraser Health says will streamline administration and allow for better use of space. The new facility will have more space for client services. Home health will increase from one clinic room to three, which will allow for more appointments for home care nursing and wound care clients. Public health will increase from three to four clinic rooms, which will mean more room for group/peer sessions, including breastfeeding support groups. The move and renovations of the new location come with an approximately $1.5million price tag. Services offered at the health unit include services or information on immunization, communicable disease control, maternal and pregnancy health, early childhood development, speech therapy, audiology and nutrition. Home care, occupational therapy and physiotherapy services are also run out of the unit. The unit also serves as the home base for environmental health officers who oversee inspections of restaurants, pools and hot tubs, and businesses that provide personal services like salons, barber shops and tattoo parlours. Fraser Health plans to advertise in advance of the move. The phone and fax numbers for the unit will remain the same.

IN MY OPINION

Just what is Nestle afraid of?

Dear Editor:

In her opinion piece (Board made right call on bottled water) in the March 19 Record, Lisa Chao attacks statements made in a letter about the bottled water in school issue, purportedly written by me. She is wrong in two ways: I did not make the statements in question, and in any case my opinion does not, as she claims, “need to be corrected.” In a free society, everyone is entitled to express an opinion. A critic also is free to say that another’s opinion is wrong, but pronouncing that a correction is needed is high-handed and out of order. But the real issue here is not covered in niggling over opinions. It lies in the question of why Nestle, a huge, multinational food company, is so obsessed over continuing to peddle plastic-encased water in a school in the little city of New Westminster. Why has it sponsored a campaign to have school trustee

Lori Watt declared in conflict of interest in supporting a student initiative to get bottled water out of the school? My letter challenged the claim by Neil Powell, president of Voice New Westminster, that “the health and well-being of New Westminster students and staff were being placed on the backburner by those pushing a special agenda to have bottled water banned.” What special agenda, other than the practical move of reducing school costs and landfill rubbish – as sought by the students themselves? By “health and well-being” is he implying that tap water is unsafe? I suggest that Nestle, the world’s biggest food company with its fingers in the pie of 86 countries around the globe, fears that settling our little issue on the grounds of common sense, unnecessary cost and environmental considerations might set a precedent that could affect a large part of the startlingly

Saving us from a threat?

Dear Editor:

Congratulations to the Nestle-Voice Coalition for beating back at the last minute the threat of promoting tap water in our schools.

Those special interests responsible were about to upset the status quo. If successful there was the potential for chaos. I can only hope you will stay together as a formidable force in the coming election. I envision your candidates in corporate colours with the Nestle bottled water logo front and centre standing true and strong. Just think, if successful, your example could be a template for corporations and like-minded citizens groups to join together to rid this land of these progressive rabblerousers. involved and change it – wouldn’t every responsible citizen? Today he is a citizen, trying to hold an elected trustee to account. To date he has taken necessary steps to present his case and is prepared to take it to Supreme Court. I find it unacceptable that Mr. O’Connor is vilified by his critics for soliciting funds from Nestle – with no mention of his efforts to find funding from his friends and businesses throughout the city. I am sure the critics will be silent as we watch with interest where Ms. Watt gets her money to fund her legal costs, should her suit reach the Supreme Court – labour, perhaps? But all the above muddies the water, whether from the tap or the bottle. Who cares about any of it. What we care about is if she is, or is not, in conflict. To date, the Voice trustees have been correct in each instance where they have charged conflict of interest among their fellow trustees and, indeed, have been proved right. Therefore, these precedent-setting results go

a long way to support the proposition that Mr. O’Connor is, in all likelihood, correct in his assertion and that the matter merits investigation. One would think for clarity, Ms. Watt would have embraced Mr. O’Connor in his quest to prove the trustees operate without conflict or coercion … but, sadly, this is not the case. The optics of her actions appear more to make the case that Ms. Watt “doth protest too much”! In typical New West style, the supporters of the labour slate are again trying to use the Voice mantra from three years ago to try to divert attention from the real issue – that of conflict of interest. They continue to bring up Voice when, for all practical purposes, Voice is really a non-entity and has been since the day after the election. Their legacies are the Voice trustees and a lone president and precious little else. That said, trying to portray O’Connor’s association with the Voice group as negative might prove a grave miscalculation in the end. I remind those in opposition to

them that they garnered slightly less than 50 per cent of the vote. Mr. Cook , if I am not mistaken, was the top voted trustee of all the candidates. The attempts to discredit Voice are an affront to nearly 50 per cent of the population who supported the party’s candidates. So let’s ride the crest of wave and stay focused on the issue at hand that O’Connor represents – conflict of interest. Sadly the provincial government has no measures in place to determine the issue themselves so it needs to go to court. Given this void in governance, I say let the courts adjudicate the matter. I am certain that all the other issues that are desperately being brought forth by O’Connor’s detractors will garner plenty of space in the papers as the November election approaches. As I have opined before, with respect to politics in New Westminster, we are better off with successful candidates that are “A voice, not an echo.” Ted Eddy is a New Westminster resident.

◗ MURDER TRIAL

Undercover cop takes stand

Police used 60 scenarios during a six-month undercover operation to convince accused killer Gary Johnston that he was becoming part of a criminal organization. An explosion and a fictional kidnapping and murder were among the situations in which Johnston was involved, the RCMP officer who designed the scenarios testified Monday. The officer, who was the “cover person” for the operation, cannot be identified due to a publication ban. Johnston is on trial, charged with second-degree murder in the March 13, 1998 stabbing death of 42-yearold Victor Fraser, a New Westminster trucker. Prosecutors allege that Johnston killed Fraser after he walked in on Johnston stealing from the Surrey house belonging to Fraser’s sister, Jeanie. The undercover operation took

Unlocking the wisdom from within

SketchaJournal creator wants to help people use both sides of their brain to make better decisions BY JULIE MACLELLAN REPORTER jmaclellan@royalcityrecord.com

D

iane Doyle still has that first journal she started when she was eight years old. Her mom had given each of the children a school exercise book, cut in half horizontally (there were, after all, seven kids in her family) – and told them to write about their day. Doyle, with a smile, reads out the first couple paragraphs from that treasured old orange notebook. It’s about how everyone says they hate school, and she says it too – but how really, she likes it. It was her first realization that you could be your real self in a journal in a way that you couldn’t – or wouldn’t – in real life. “That’s the thing about writing it down. You can be true to yourself, you don’t have to worry about what other people say,” she says. The Queensborough resident is the author of a new book, How to Journal for Hope and Happiness, and the creator of the SketchaJournal – a journal that combines space for writing and drawing. She also offers workshops in journalling, and registration for her new courses is starting soon. She’s hoping that, through the book and the courses, she can help other people to understand just how profound the benefits of keeping a journal can be. It’s a mission that began for her about three years ago, when her father had a stroke. That triggered a few things for Doyle, she recalls. First was a renewed interest in how the brain works and the difference between the right and left brain – the creative, emotional, big-picture functions of the right and the logical, analytical functions of the left. Second was the whole issue of life transitions and how to cope with change, loss and grief. Her father did pull through, but,

It brought up questions for Doyle of how she would cope with his loss, and it reminded her of the fact that journalling had helped her when, in 2006, she had miscarried a baby girl at four-and-a-half months. Third was her sense of purpose. She had been working for the Association of Neighbourhood Houses of B.C. and had lost some of her enthusiasm for it. Those three things coalesced for her into one new idea. “I came home and told my husband I

was going to write a blank book,” she says with a laugh. That “blank book” was the SketchaJournal. Unlike traditional journals, the SketchaJournal offers a combination of lined and blank pages – one part for drawing and sketching, the other for writing. Doyle decided to take a one-year sabbatical from her job to focus on the SketchaJournal, her book and the associated workshops. During that time, she discovered she was pregnant – she and husband Don are now the happy parents of a threemonth-old girl – and she found herself balancing parenthood with her new vocation. She’s just about to go back to her job while Don takes some parental leave, and she’ll continue to focus on her journalling mission outside of work hours. She’s hoping that more people will come to understand the benefits of journalling – and, in particular, SketchaJournalling. Doyle admits that many people find the whole idea of drawing and writing intimidating up front. “People right away put a wall and say they’re not artists,” she says. “The idea is to help people develop both sides of their brain,” she adds, pointing out that everyone has a natural inclination towards one side or the other – and more often, people understand the left-brain

functions better. “The school system really trains the left side of the brain.” Bringing both sides of the brain to play in daily life is a huge benefit, she says. “In doing so they’ll be stronger in their decision-making, wiser, more confident,” she says. Doyle notes that “journalling” doesn’t mean keeping a diary. While a diary is usually a recounting of the day’s events, a journal is a more practical tool that can be used to help guide decision-making, offer insight into your own thoughts and emotions and, in the process, create change in your life. It can apply in just about any situation, Doyle says, but in her workshops she tends to focus on certain areas. One of those is times of major change – a course she calls Transitions through Change, Loss and Grief. “People go through loss all the time, people go through change all the time,” she says. Journalling can help those coping with a major loss or grief – the death of a loved one, for instance – by helping them to see how they have coped with loss and change in the past and by using those same coping skills to move forward. New Westminster resident is stepping into the spotlight for the next Applause! Musicals in Concert production. Greg Delmage takes on the leading role of Leadville Johnny in the concert production of The Unsinkable Molly Brown, which runs for four performances at CBC Studio 700 from March 24 to 26. Applause! presents rare, shelved and forgotten musicals, all performed “on book”– actors have scripts and scores in hand. The Unsinkable Molly Brown is a rags-to-riches story that’s based on the life of Margaret Tobin Brown, a socialite from Denver who was born in Hannibal, Missouri and

moved to pursue her goal: to marry a rich man. The musical takes the audience on a journey to 23 locations, from the Rocky Mountains to fancy European salons to, of course, the Titanic – where Brown became one of the most famous survivors. The musical features book by Richard Morris and music and lyrics by Meredith Willson – the American composer best known for the hit Broadway musical The Music Man. The Unsinkable Molly Brown was his second musical and opened on Broadway in 1960 before being made into a motion picture starring Debbie Reynolds in 1964. The Applause! concert is semi-staged with a full cast and chorus, who work with minimal production and technical elements and a one-week rehearsal period featuring 30 hours of rehearsal. It’s directed by Ryan Mooney, with music direction by Angus Kellett. You can catch it at CBC

Studio 700, 700 Hamilton St. in Vancouver, on March 24, 25 and 26 at 8 p.m., or March 26 at 2 p.m. See www.applausemusicals. com. Order tickets at www.brownpapertickets. com or call 1-800-838-3006.

help people who are looking for a new meaning in their life – whether they are at a career crossroad, recently retired or otherwise questioning what they want out of life. A third major focus for Doyle – and the subject of her new book – is the Journey to the Christian Heart, which she’ll be offering as a mini-Lenten retreat at St. Peter’s Church on March 25. Her program offers five steps – which she summarizes as meditate, contemplate, activate, liberate, celebrate – towards renewed faith and hope. Doyle says journalling can benefit anyone, at any stage in life – helping to bring them clarity, to better understand their own

thoughts and feelings, to make wise decisions, to heal past hurts, to move to the future in a positive way. It’s all those benefits of journalling that she wants to bring to people. “It can be used for anything, personal or business,” she says. “It’s not just writing about your day, it’s helping you move forward. … It helps a person be authentic and true to themselves.” How to Journal for Hope and Happiness can be found at four Christian bookstores in the Lower Mainland: St. Andrew’s, Blessing Christian Book Store, Joyful Noise Book Store and Holy Family Book Store. SketchaJournals can be ordered online at www.SketchaJournal.com.

Should New West be Poetry Capital of B.C.?

BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

The City of New Westminster is looking into a request to declare the city as the Poetry Capital of British Columbia. PoetryNewWestminster, a newly formed society that includes poet laureate emeritus Don Benson and current poet laureate Candice James, is seeking to have New Westminster dubbed the Poetry Capital of British Columbia. The group has asked city council to endorse the proposal, noting poetry dates back 150 years in New Westminster, the city is home to a growing number of poets and regular poetry events, has become a destination for international touring poets, and is home to the first poet laureate in B.C. and the first poets laureate emerita and emeritus. “We were the first capital of British Columbia,” said a letter from Don Benson to city council. “We were ahead of all other cities then, and rightfully should be breaking new but familiar ground by becoming the first Poetry Capital.” New Westminster city council has referred the request to the city’s arts commission. “I think it’s an interesting idea that has been proposed by some people who are familiar with the poetry

scene in New Westminster,” said Dean Gibson, the city’s director of parks, culture and recreation. “I think it will require some thoughtful consideration.” Gibson said staff will explore the issue and report their findings to the arts commission. “We haven’t really gone down this road before,” said Gibson of a request to give the city an official designation. “It is new territory for us. We want to be thoughtful and take appropriate measures.” Coun. Bill Harper said the designation is something that city staff needs to explore before council can support the designation. “I think it’s something the city has to look at carefully. It depends how you do it. If you are calling yourself the Poetry Capital, you are branding your city,” he said. “We are already in a series of discussions about how to brand our city properly for economic development purposes.” Coun. Betty McIntosh is impressed with the calibre of poets in New Westminster but isn’t necessarily sold on the idea of designating the city as the Poetry Capital of British Columbia. “We have some amazing people with some wonderful talent,” she said. “You can’t focus on one small group.”

The Arts Council of New Westminster had been asked to endorse the proposal to designate the City of New Westminster as the Poetry Capital of B.C. At its recent meeting, the board of directors voted against supporting the request. Alison Kirkley, a member of the arts council’s board of directors, said the arts council supports poetry, but it also represents other art groups including theatre, visual arts, painting and photography. She said there was some discomfort about singling out one particular group of the arts community. Benson believes New Westminster has more poets per capita than any other city in B.C. Poetry New Westminster has now embarked on a survey to determine how many poets are currently in the city. For more information about the survey, contact Don Benson at donbenson@telus.net.

She’s close to shopping and transit, which makes it easy to get around. And, as a long-term tenant, her rent is kept at a reasonable amount. Siblings must work as a team to help mom and dad ary is one of seven children. When her widowed mother was showing signs of Alzheimer’s, Mary and her brothers and sisters all had a different understanding of the illness, and different suggestions for how to proceed. The family wasn’t moving ahead and there were conflicts among the siblings.

“Any family that has cared for a senior loved one knows that problems working with siblings can lead to family strife,” said Paul Tjosvold, owner of Home Instead Senior Care. “Making decisions together, dividing the workload and teamwork are the keys to overcoming family conflict.”

Family caregivers who care for aging parents encounter situations like this all the time. Caregiver stress, life-and-death medical crises, financial problems and property disputes become part of the saga of a family’s caregiving story. As a result, relationships suffer.

Along with the study, Home Instead Senior Care has launched the “50-50 rule,” a public education campaign to help families provide the best care for senior parents. The rule refers to the average age (50) when siblings are caring for their parents, as well as the need to share responsibility on a 50-50 basis.

The new study of siblings who act as family caregivers, conducted for the Home Instead Senior Care, sheds new light on sibling dynamics in these situations.

A guide offering a variety of additional tips and resources to help adult siblings work as a team to share the care of their parents is available at www.solvingfamilyconflict.com.

Top five sibling caregiver hot buttons In family caregiving, certain situations are hot button triggers and can make the life of caregiving siblings more difficult and lead to family conflict. The “50-50 rule” from Home Instead Senior Care pinpoints five triggers: 1. Illness: A senior loved one who becomes ill or faces declining health can leave a family with difficult issues. Who provides the additional care? Is there a team approach or does one sibling bear the brunt of the caregiving? Family member opinions differ and the changing needs of a senior can worsen the situation. 2. Money: Money matters often complicate life for seniors and their adult children. The recent economic downturn has impacted the savings of many older adults. Families can be forced to make

tough caregiving decisions when concerning their loved one’s finances. 3. Inheritance: The temptation of a family inheritance can influence one’s decisions. If one sibling is encouraging a parent to spend the siblings’ inheritance and another is coaxing that parent to save the money, trouble is sure to ensue.

4. Distance: Siblings who live in the same town or city as their parents may be stuck with most of the caregiver work. 5. Stress: Adult caregivers who start a new job, are raising children or caring for their own spouse can become overwhelmed when elderly family members need help. — Information courtesy Home Instead Senior Care

n upcoming anniversary and a question on a recent cemetery tour have spurred us to review our files on some Masonic information and dates. The question had to do with the Masonic symbols that might be found in a cemetery or on a building. Lewis Lodge No. 57, which meets in the Masonic Temple on Agnes Street in New Westminster, is celebrating 100 years as a Masonic lodge. The Masons formed their first lodge in New Westminster in the early 1860s, and there will undoubtedly be celebrations to mark that start and the 150th anniversary of that group in late 2011 and into 2012. Lewis Lodge traces its beginnings to the early years of the 1900s. The earliest Masonic group met in the Hicks Hotel, in a large room

located on an upper floor. This building was located on the river side of what today would be the 500 block of Columbia Street. After many years at that location, the Masons moved to a building of their own at the corner of Lorne Street at Columbia. After a few years, a fire destroyed that structure, which was rebuilt on the same site, but then it burned down once again in the 1898 Great Fire of the city. Again the building was rebuilt, but the Masons moved to an interim site or two until their new home was erected on Agnes Street where local Masonic and affiliated groups meet to this day. A Masonic cemetery was established in Sapperton in 1871/72 next to the Church of England burial ground that was readied in 1869. In terms of symbolism, the gate probably was marked with a Masonic symbol of some kind leading into the cemetery for those “of the Craft” and their families. Watch this column for other Masonic presentations and tours in 2011/12.

Public speakers compete AROUND TOWN

THERESA MCMANUS

T

illicum Toastmasters in New Westminster is getting set to host Round 2 of the 2011 Toastmasters International Speech Contest. Julian Worker, vicepresident of public relations for Tillicum Toastmasters, notes that this round of the contest is for Area 80, which covers New Westminster, Burnaby and part of Richmond. Everyone is invited to attend and see some of the best local speakers and evaluators from this part of the Lower Mainland. Viktor Chui will be representing Tillicum in the evaluator’s contest on March 28. He is thrilled to be taking part. “I will be doing my best to make as good an impression as possible,” he said. “I have learnt a lot already in the club contest and hope to do well in the area contest.”

The speakers and evaluators from clubs in Area 80 will be at Tillicum hoping to progress even further in the world’s largest speech contest, which covers 113 countries globally. Winners on March 28 could end up as one of the nine contenders who make it to the final round in August, which is held in Las Vegas and the winner will be crowned the Toastmasters World Champion of Public Speaking. Tillicum Toastmasters meets at 1630 Edinburgh St. on most Mondays between 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. Its website is http:// tillicum.freetoasthost.ws.

Family time

New Westminster Family Place is inviting local families to visit its latest drop-in in the Royal City. Family Place is launching its Friday morning drop-in program at 1170 Eighth Ave. on April 1. The drop-in will run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. “It’s a little bit of a bigger site,” said executive director Marjorie Staal. “We are hoping folks from the West End will come in and see the place. It’s

a West End focus, but it also encompasses the area around Moody Park.” An early childhood educator will staff the drop-in, which includes playtime and snack time. The new space, located at the corner of Eighth Avenue and 12th Street, was previously the home of former MLA Chuck Puchmayr’s constituency office.

Valuable feline

A very special New Westminster kitty was a winner in the most recent round of voting in Bissell’s Most Valuable Pet Contest. Kristin Schumacher’s cat Clover, who was injured at a young age, is among thousands of pets who have been submitted for a chance to be featured on Bissell’s pet product packaging, earn $10,000 to donate to the pet cause of their choice, and win a $500 shopping spree. “Move over, here comes Clover. Don’t feel sorry for Clover, she doesn’t think there is a thing wrong with her,” said her profile on the contest’s website. “She is happy to cuddle and share her cat hair with anyone. She was injured at a young age, and we don’t

know how, and has a heart of gold.” Now 12 years old, Clover beat out assorted pets during voting period number 9. While Clover has secured its place in the competition, pet parents still have until March 29, to submit their pet for a chance at the grand prize. Enter at http://bissell. promo.eprize.com/ mvpcontest for a chance at the grand prize. “Since 2008, more than 150,000 pets were entered into the MVP contest, which is now in its fourth year,” said an e-mail from Bissell. “The contest contributes to Bissell’s pet-loving community outreach, as well as the company’s longstanding partnership with PetFinder.com, aiming to find caring homes for abandoned animals across the United States and Canada.” Do you have an item for Around Town? Giants sweep Cougars for third title

South coach ready to pass the torch

Must await the winner of Alberta playoff final

BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

The Northwest Giants will get a third consecutive crack at a berth into the Telus Cup. The B.C. major midget hockey league regular season champs swept a best-of-three championship series against the visiting Cariboo Cougars at the Burnaby Winter Club Saturday. The Giants took the opening game 4-3 on Friday. On Saturday, the Giants jumped on the league runner-up early, putting the pressure on the Cougars, while building up a 5-1 advantage heading into the final period. “I think the turning point of the series was in the third period (on Friday),” said first-year Giants head coach Todd Harkins. “I told them ‘if we continue that same way today we’ll have success.’” That moment in question Friday came when the Burnaby-based Giants held off a Cariboo comeback in the final period. League scoring champ Alex Kerfoot got the gamewinning goal, his fourth point of the game. Linemate Sam Reinhart scored the Giants’ first three goals. Cam Marks assisted on a pair of Giants’ markers, including Kerfoot’s game-winner. On Saturday, Kerfoot and Reinhart also played a big part in the win, scoring two goals and adding a pair of assists apiece. Reinhart got the eventual game-winner with the

Scott Patterson and Alex Roberts also scored late power play goals in the runaway second period. “I think we just did the little things – get pucks in, get them to take penalties, move our feet and keep moving,” said Giants captain Mitch Fyffe of New Westminster. “We just came out hard. The only club from this province to win a midget national title was the Burnaby Winter Club Travellers in 1982. Two other teams, the 1980 BWC Travellers and then the host North Kamloops Lions in 1996, also garnered a bronze medal at the national midget championships. The Northwest Giants must await the winner of the Alberta Midget Hockey League final between defending champion Red Deer Optimist Rebels and the Leduc Chrysler Oil Kings. That best-of-seven series is currently tied 1-1.

Burnaby South Rebels Greg Matic is ready to step down as head coach of the former No. 1 ranked high school boys’ basketball team. Matic, who led the Rebels to back-to-back topeight placings at the B.C. AAA high school championships following a seventh-place finish Saturday, said it was time to step aside after 12 seasons as a high school basketball coach, including the last six seasons as head coach of the senior boys’ team. “I want to stay involved in some capacity, I just think it’s time for someone else to step forward,” Matic said after South’s 7066 loss to Pitt Meadows on Saturday. “I think the torch needs to be passed on, but I want to make sure the program stays strong.” Matic cited the work commitment and time away from his family as reasons for his decision. “It takes an immense amount of work to reach this level. You are playing against the best kids and the best coaches, you need to be prepared. Every team’s goal is to play in the provincials,” he said. The foundation of the Burnaby South program appears solid, with Rebel teams also winning the ◗Coach Page 24

Rebel rally falls one point short at AAA provincials BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

The Burnaby South Rebels found out first-hand just how hard being No. 1 really is. The No. 1-ranked high school team in the province for most of the season finished seventh following a 70-66 loss to the Pitt Meadows Marauders at the B.C. AAA boys’ basketball championships at the Langley Events Centre Saturday. Although not its best performance at the show, South showed the mettle that made it

the top-ranked school for all but a few weeks during the regular season in a last-quarter charge against the Marauders that fell a few points short. Trailing by 14 points heading into the fourth quarter against the No. 5 Fraser Valley seed, South outscored Pitt 17-7 in the final frame, coming to within a single point of the lead with less than a minute left on a putback by 6-5 post Nick Irvine. “We worked hard, this was our goal, to win a championship. We didn’t accomplish it,” said Rebel guard Ater Degal, who fin-

ished with a team-high 16 points despite playing all tournament with a painful finger injury. “Today, we just couldn’t come together as a team,” said the Grade 11 guard, who led the Rebels in tournament scoring with 83 total points. “I think that’s why we didn’t get to the finals. It’s the little things that get you there.” Those little things were strikingly apparent in Friday’s 7568 victory over the former No. 2-ranked Kelowna Owls that earned South a place in the final seven.

Degal and third team tournament all-star Daniel Edwards led the Rebels with 22 and 21 points, respectively against the Owls. Edwards also finished with his second of three tournament double-doubles, hauling in 11 boards while helping to hold Kelowna’s 6-11, 250-pound post Braxston Bunce to just six points. But while 10 South players hit the scoresheet in the final game against Pitt, only Degal and Edwards hit in double figures. On the flipside, second team all-star Malcolm Williams was Pitt’s best player, potting 27

points, 17 of them coming in the first period and a half. But despite the disappointment, the Rebels will always have the memory of that final five minutes of the fourth quarter against Pitt Meadows that might have been. Senior forward Jok Malek started it off going coast-to-coast to bring the deficit to 67-57 midway through the final frame. A minute later, Malek finished off a three-point play to shave more points off the lead. ◗South Page 25

New West in tough at Tier 2 provincials The New Westminster Royals have garnered just one point through Day 2 at the provincial Tier 2 midget hockey championships in Salmon Arm this week. The Royals opened with a 3-3 tie with Williams Lake on Sunday. Marco Ballarin counted a pair of goals for the New West club, which finished in a three-way tie with Surrey and Langley in the Pacific Coast final four playoffs. Oliver Colbourne also scored for the Queen’s Park club, deflecting in a slap shot off the stick of teammate Brandon Newman. Michael Little, with a pair of assists, and Ryland Davidson, also

picked up points in the draw. On Monday, Port Alberni jumped out to a 3-0 lead and skated to a 4-1 victory over New Westminster. Davidson cut the deficit to 3-1 with the only goal of the middle frame. Newman and Colbourne drew the helpers for the Royals. New Westminster played Surrey Tuesday (after Record deadlines). Surrey advanced to the B.C.s on the strength of a 3-2 win over the Royals. New Westminster also earned a provincial berth with its 5-0 scoreline against Langley in the playdowns. The top two teams in each pool will then crossover in the semifinals today (Wednesday).

boys’ bantam, juvenile and junior district boys’ basketball banners this season, including the Grade 10 team that garnered a seventh-place finish at this year’s junior provincial championships. Matic led the South varsity boys to a 35-5 record this season, including championship wins at the HSBC Classic and Western Canada tournaments. “It’s always sad, when you reflect on the thrill of the first time we made (the provincials), and then think we should have done so much better,” said Matic. “I just hope the kids learn from this and become better for it. I told them, ‘I love the fact that you are good basketball players, but I really want that you become good people from that accomplishment.’”

The medal games will be played later today. In Tier 1 peewee action, the Burnaby Winter Club currently leads a six-team ladder at the provincial championships in Prince George. The winter club drew 5-5 with Langley, in what was reported as the “game of the competition to date” on Tuesday. Despite the draw, Burnaby remained the only unbeaten team in a tough group that included Langley, North Shore Winter Club and Kelowna. The provincial championship final game is scheduled to get underway today (Wednesday).

Seventh place: Jok Malek, centre, helped lead an attempted fourth-quarter Burnaby South comeback that fell short against Pitt Meadows at the B.C. high school boys’ basketball championships on Saturday.

South: Palmer wins first-ever B.C. title ◗ continued from page 23

Manroop Clair, with a steal, and Irvine, with his first of two putbacks in the dying minutes, also aided the attempted comeback. But South couldn’t get a clear look at the bucket after that. Burnaby South first went to the provincials under head coach Greg Matic in 2007, but did not place. The Rebels finished eighth at last year’s show, following a sixpoint loss to Charles Tupper. “Mentally, we weren’t quite ready,” said Matic after the game. “It takes a lot of years and hard work to reach this level. You have to be prepared. “But, to be playing on Saturday, it’s a huge accomplishment. It shows we’ve done something. Our character showed yesterday (Friday) and in the fourth quarter (against Pitt).”

The Rebels were off their game in Thursday’s second-round matchup against eventual fourth-place-finisher W.J. Mouat. South trailed 20-7 after the opening quarter and went on to lose 75-68 to the Fraser Valley champs. But Degal chose to look on the bright side, pointing out that aside from Alpha Secondary’s seventh-place finish in 2004, none of the other 10 Burnaby schools that have qualified for the B.C.s in the past 20 years have placed in the final eight. “We accomplished a lot, but we just couldn’t get it accomplished at the provincials. But that’s life,” said Degal. R.C. Palmer, who claimed the No. 1 mantle from South for three short weeks during the month of December, won its first B.C. title, defeating Vancouver College 71-63 in the championship final. Terry Fox beat Mouat for third place.

Local footballer scores in TO loss Burnaby native Gianluca Zavarise hit the scoresheet Saturday in the Vancouver Whitecaps Major League Soccer debut at Empire Field. Zavarise’s assist came on Toronto FC’s second goal, a rocket from 25 yards out by Maicon Santos, in Vancouver’s 4-2 win. Zavarise, signed by

Toronto on March 11, came on as a substitute in the 69th minute. The Whitecaps got the dream result they were looking for, as they thrilled the 23,000-plus in attendance with a scoring display not seen in recent Whitecaps history. Two goals from newly signed French striker Eric

Hassli, in the 15th and 72nd minutes, bookended markers from Terry Dunfield and Atiba Harris. “It was an incredible day,” said Dunfield, who celebrated his goal by leaping into the stands to be mobbed by friends and family. alau@royalcityrecord.com www.twitter.com/AlfieLau

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
