The architectural team charged with designing the new civic centre continues to refine its designs for the project and ensure that the building won’t be a “misfit” on Columbia Street. Roger Hughes, a principal at Hughes Condon Marler Architects, gave council an overview of the latest concept for the civic centre on Monday. “The plans have become well developed,” he said. “The program has become quite refined in terms of area allocations.” The city’s portion of the civic centre, which will be located on Columbia Street between Eighth and Begbie streets, will include a theatre, convention space, art studios, an art gallery, a tourist information centre, the city’s museum and archives, the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame and a restaurant. The city has partnered with the Uptown Property Group, which will build an office tower of up to eight storeys above the civic centre. Terry Atherton, the city’s manager of civic buildings and properties, said the excavation and shoring (bracing of the sides of the excavation) of the three levels of parkade will begin in the summer, but the actual construction of the parkade foundation and concrete will take place later. A West End resident is grateful that the city has made it a little easier for parents to get their kids to school. Ingrid Tymm recently contacted city hall to raise concerns about the lack of accessibility of some sidewalks for children riding bicycles and parents pushing strollers. She was particularly concerned about the sidewalks on streets leading to Lord Tweedsmuir

Tymm, who has had some experience dealing with municipalities through her job, said she was pleasantly surprised with the speed at which city officials responded to her email and followed up with phone calls. “They were so personable in virtually every step in the game,” she said. “It was totally a fluke that I opened up the paper and there was this article.” New Westminster resident Basil Fitz recently told The Record that he was concerned about the condition of some of the city’s sidewalks and “curb letdowns” which allow people to move easily from sidewalks to the road. He expressed concern that the condition of some sidewalks and the lack of

curb letdowns creates challenges for people who are getting around in wheelchairs, or use mobility aids or strollers. Tymm said that improvements were made to the sidewalks in her neighbourhood soon after she contacted city hall. She said the changes make it much easier for parents to manoeuvre little ones in strollers and for younger children who are riding their bikes. “Lo and behold, here they are,” she said of the sidewalk improvements. “They put most of the curbs in.” Blair Fryer, the city’s manager of communications, said the City of New Westminster’s website has an online map that shows the locations of all of the curb letdowns in the

It just wouldn’t be an election in New Westminster without an election poll courtesy of longtime business Burger Heaven. If you’re “fed up” with the current state of affairs in Canada, the bun-official federal election burger poll is now on at Burger Heaven. The restaurant provided these descriptions of burgers in the bun-official poll: ◆ Harper Burger (Conservatives): With a conservative slice of cheese, this burger is on the right, front burner. Made with “lean to the right” Grade A Alberta beef, Alberta cheddar and served with a Conservative side of fries, this burger may come with a slice of humble pie a la mode. With hope of a majority government, you can expect a lot of Harp about this choice and don’t be surprised if this candidate takes control of the kitchen and cooks the burger himself. Lots of condiments to choose from - but could cost extra. ◆ Ignatieff Burger (Liberals): This burger is new to our menu, is a real mouthful and includes a slice of American cheese. The City of New Westminster’s arts commission will advise city council that it should be cautious about designating the city as the Poetry Capital of British Columbia. The City of New Westminster is looking into a request to declare the city as the Poetry Capital of British Columbia, a request made by a Don Benson and the newly formed Poetry New Westminster group. The group has asked city council to

endorse the proposal, noting poetry dates back 150 years in New Westminster, the city is home to a growing number of poets and regular poetry events, has become a destination for international touring poets, and is home to the first poet laureate in B.C. and the first poets laureate emerita and emeritus. “Don Benson sent a letter to council requesting that New Westminster be designated the Poetry Capital of B.C., then council referred that letter to the commission. The commission reviewed the letter and the idea,” said Joanne Edey-Nicoll, the

city’s assistant director of parks, culture and recreation. “There was quite a lot of discussion about it.” The arts commission members noted that there have been a lot of poetry groups and poets active in the city in the past few years. “They were cautious about self-designation,” Edey-Nicoll said. “That was the biggest thing for them. They did feel designating ourselves as something probably wasn’t a wise decision.” The commission didn’t support the request to designate New Westminster as

the Poetry Capital of B.C. “One of the other main points that the arts commission was focusing on was the recognition that there is all different forms of art in New Westminster,” Edey-Nicoll said. “They were reluctant to focus on one particular form. They see that the whole area of the arts in New Westminster is gaining more recognition. They were reluctant to focus too much on one art form.” It will recommend that council refer the matter to staff to explore ways to support poetry in the city, and ways to honour ◗Poetry Page 8

The 30-second video shows two almost-identical cereal boxes – one box featuring a photo of Premier Christy Clark, a second box (Campbell Crunch) featuring former premier Gordon Campbell. The woman asks, “Can something taste mean?” and then, “What’s that?” as her partner reaches into the cereal box and pulls out pulls a toy train, complete with a ‘B.C. Rail’ logo. “It’s a train giveaway,” he replies.

Will voters think it’s too cute? Will they think it makes light of a serious situation? “It’s got some humour, but it’s a serious ad to remind people of the negative policies that were implemented while Christy Clark was at the cabinet meeting,” said interim B.C. NDP leader Dawn Black, trying to cover all bases. Who knows how it will play with the voters? But what we do know is that it’s a welcome contrast to the usual hamhanded humourless ads that we have come to expect during elections.

Are teachers’ hopes out of line? IN THE HOUSE KEITH BALDREY

attended the 95th convention of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation last week and met a lot of enthusiastic, earnest, optimistic and dedicated teachers who all made a plausible case for being paid more money. They also made a solid case for improving learning conditions in their classrooms. Unfortunately for them (and their students), I don’t see much hope for either a salary increase or significant changes taking place in their classrooms. Faced with a large, lingering deficit, the provincial government will not sign a new collective agreement with the teachers’ federation that includes a wage increase, at least not for a year or two. If the government were to fold and give teachers a raise, the 300,000 other public sector union employees whose contracts expire next spring would rightly expect similar increases, thus increasing the deficit even more. The teachers’ federation has signalled it will be asking for a double-digit pay hike, which is somewhat silly given the current economic situation. No other profession is getting anywhere

close to double-digit wage increases, and the federation’s argument that its members should be paid what their counterparts are paid in Alberta and Ontario is irrelevant. The teachers’ federation also argues the government made an exception with the B.C. Nurses’ Union and gave its members a wage increase while insisting other unions stick to a zero-zero program. Yes, the nurses did get a wage increase, but they are in a unique position in which they hold considerable leverage over their employer. There is a shortage of nurses, and their skills are vitally needed. But there is no shortage of teachers, which greatly weakens the federation’s bargaining position when it comes to wages. However, the teachers’ union appears to have a much more reasonable argument to make when it comes to classroom learning conditions. Many teachers at the convention had poignant stories of trying to teach 30 kids, when as many as six to a dozen of them had various learning or behavioural disabilities. The government has understandably refused the teachers’ union’s attempts over the years to gain more formal control over classroom conditions, but this power struggle has allowed those conditions to deteriorate in many cases. The steady rise in the number of special needs students – coupled with cuts to teaching positions designed to

Daycare difficult for parents

I’m a frequent reader of your newspaper and have recently followed the trend of events in New Westminster. I have come to find out from a number of immi◗Teachers Page 7 grants whom I have interviewed that there is a lot

of difficulties faced by parents who newly arrive in New Westminster with the hope of securing a space for their children in a daycare. It takes an average of six months to one year, and it is almost impossible to get a place immediately. Not only that, when you get one, the prices are way too expensive compared to other cities like Surrey and Burnaby. Parents can no longer keep silent over this issue as the economy right now is really difficult and the subsidy amount allocated by the ministry for child care is still the same and has not yet been increased. Can parents please kindly suggest what can be done to improve this situation as it is a source of major concerns for both mothers and dads trying to get back to the workforce ? Or do we simply want to go on pretending that it does not really matter when we know it does? Amaka Osuagwu, New Westminster

My wife works for a Hong Kong-based airline, and they give a special fare to those people who want to leave Japan. Canadians who live in Japan made their choice. Why leave a nice country and the best city? Please do not blame the government, ask yourself what you can do for your country and not the other way. Patrick O’Connor seems to believe that since I am a member of a union, my opinion on the bottled water issue in New West schools is somehow suspect (Union involvement a concern, Letters, March 19, The Record). That might come as a surprise to the thousands and thousands of union mem-

Federation president Susan Lambert has told me that classroom composition and not wages is the number 1 issue “by far” with most teachers. Perhaps, then, the teachers’ federation should bargain their new contract accordingly and jettison the unrealistic wage demands in favour of pressuring the government to step up to the plate on classroom conditions. It’s an issue that will also garner more public support. While the B.C. Liberals keep pointing out that funding for the K-12 system keeps increasing on a per-pupil basis, the reality is that schools keep being closed and teachers

find their working conditions deteriorating. Parents are acutely aware of the situation and represent a powerful voting bloc come election time. Quite apart from giving teachers a big wage increase, the B.C. Liberals are on shakier ground if they ignore classroom working conditions. It was good to see Education Minister George Abbott become the first education minister in 10 years to attend a B.C. Teachers’ Federation convention. He was warmly greeted by union members who have had bitter battles with the B.C. Liberal government. Three of the last teachers’ contracts were imposed by the legislature after negotiations proved hopeless. Hopefully, the goodwill Abbott established there will translate

When it comes to decisions our locally elected school board makes, I certainly hope that they consider the views of the students, staff and of course the residents of New Westminster, rather than being swayed by the high-priced legal opinions Mr. O’Connor obtained from multinational companies with vested interests, as he did in this case. To try get back to the issue, some New Westminster students felt that it was in the interest of our common environment to try to remove disposable bottles from our schools. As the father of three young children, it will be actions like this that prevent the massive island of disposable plastic refuse in the ocean from growing as they grow up. If people aren’t concerned about the environment for those of us who have some influence over these issues now, hopefully they will be concerned for the children who have to inherit these problems in the future. I applaud the students for their concern and foresight. (P.S. In the interest of full disclosure, I’m also related to a New Westminster politician. Does this also somehow invalidate my views in the eyes of Mr. O’Connor and his corporate friends?)

Pageant this weekend

Six young women are vying to be crowned Miss New Westminster 2011 this weekend. Miss New Westminster and the ambassadors will represent New Westminster through the year at various Hyack and community functions, and will travel to other parades and festivals throughout the Pacific Northwest with the Hyack float. The Hyack Festival Association sponsors the event. This year’s contestants and their sponsors are: Kaylin Brown (New Westminster NewsLeader); Danae Dumontet (New Westminster Police Officers’ Association); Brooke Moore (Royal City Rotary); Brianna

The first half of the pageant took place on March 19 at Royal City Centre, where contestants gave a speech and presented a talent and a “frugal fashion show” for the crowd. Poetry: Arts council opposes request and recognize the development of poetry in the city. If council approves the recommendation, staff would find ways to identify what has transpired over the past few years and ways to recognize the emergence of poetry in New Westminster. “I think there is quite possibly many ways we can do that,” Edey-Nicoll said. The arts commission is an advisory committee to council, so council would ultimately have the final say on the request to designate New Westminster as the Poetry Capital of B.C. Similar sentiments were put forward by the Arts Council of New Westminster. In a letter to the arts and culture commission, arts council president Rick Carswell stated that the arts council’s duty is to support all of the arts in equal measure. “As such, we find it difficult to support a singling out (of) one art form or disci-

pline over another as to receive a ‘capital’ designation,” he wrote. “All of our membership group and affiliates deserve equal support and promotion.” The arts council’s letter also pointed out that New Westminster is home to several award-wining fiction writers and gifted visual and theatrical artists. and it would be unfair to ignore those disciplines. Benson, who was on a committee charged with selecting a new poet laureate and receives poetry submissions for a column from local poets, believes New Westminster has more poets per capita than any other city in B.C. He was the city’s second poet laureate and first poet laureate emeritus. Poetry New Westminster has now embarked on a survey to determine how many poets are currently active in the city. it will relate to buildings in the Columbia Street Historic District. The architects are considering a “masonry band” that wraps around the building and a glass screen on the front of the building. Hughes said the choice of materials is important because it’s envisioned that they will be used outside and inside the building. The design team is putting together its schematic design booklet, which will include possible materials for the building, and the costs associated with using those materials. It’s expected those designs will be brought back to council by the end of April. Coun. Jaimie McEvoy said some residents have told him they are concerned how the building will fit in with the Columbia Street Historic District. “I am encouraging an open mind,” he said about the design. “It is important to some of our citizens that they feel it is not a complete misfit to the surroundings.” Hughes believes the proposed design incorporates “classical proportions” that relate well with other buildings in the heritage district. Lisa Spitale, the city’s director of development services, said it’s envisioned that one material, whether its granite, sandstone, brick or masonry, would wrap around the outside of the building. Staff believe the “wrap” should be made of a warmer material and colour that creates more of a traditional feeling. “We want to see it warm,” she said. “It’s the warm element we like on the street.” Spitale said the material chosen will help to break up the massing of glass on the front of the building, and will also help to create a relationship with other build-

ings in the area. Coun. Jonathan Cote said the biggest challenge is to create something that fits into the historic district but still makes a statement. He suggested that the materials used for the band that wraps around the building could be something that’s relevant to the downtown’s history. In addition to appearance, Hughes said the materials chosen should be those that weather well and can stand up to the climate. While most people have one image of heritage – red brick buildings with arches, Hughes said New Westminster’s heritage buildings have used a variety of designs and materials. He said the civic centre should be iconic, have classical proportions and be in scale with the buildings around it. “There’s a broad range of materials on Columbia Street and a broad range of styles as well,” Hughes said. “We need to do something today that speaks to today.” Coun. Bill Harper wants the civic centre to be iconic in its design, so people can immediately recognize it as a building of significance in the city. “Heritage has to start somewhere,” said Coun. Lorrie Williams, noting that heritage buildings were modern when they were built. “I have not had that many phone calls or emails. Most people don’t expect us to build a heritage building. If we are going to spend this money, they want something to be proud of.” The City of New Westminster negotiated $35 million in gaming funds to build the multiuse civic facility in downtown New Westminster. Royal City man pleads guilty in murder plot firearms while prohibited and three counts of counselling to commit a murder. The murder was not carried out. The intended targets were Metro Vancouver residents Sandip Duhre (reportedly a former associate of the late gangster Bindy Johal), Andre Remekie and Dustin Meehan. All three men are known to police. Police said at the time of his arrest that Radjenovic

was the “central figure” attempting to facilitate the murders, including supplying the needed weapons. It was revealed in court Monday that the person counselled to commit the murders was a police agent. A date for Radjenovic’s sentencing hearing will be confirmed Thursday. In December 2006, Radjenovic was one of five men arrested in connection with the illegal distribution

of firearms, which police allege were ending up in the hands of gangsters across Canada. Radjenovic, who came to Canada from the former Yugoslavia in the mid1990s, was a star basketball player at Burnaby South Secondary School. In an interview with The Province in January 2001, Radjenovic said he had seen a lot of violence in his hometown of Okucani, in Croatia, during the civil

He said there are currently 2,032 curb letdowns. “The city constructs 50 new ramps each year by request,” he said. “It has to be prioritized.” Priority for new curb letdowns is given to pedestrian corridors, greenways, and school and civic facilities. The city annually budgets about $50,000 for these curb letdowns. “We do have a list of locations for curb letdown improvements,” said Eugene Wat, the city’s manager of infrastructure planning. “We also take into consideration requests from the community. They all get added into the mix.” Wat said the city usually knows in the first half of the year where new letdowns will be built. In addition to building about 50 new letdowns a year, he said all new

sidewalks that are built include letdowns. Wat said input from the city’s special services and access committee and community comments help flag areas in need of curb letdowns. “We did a wheelability project in 2008. That looked at the whole issue of accessibility and wheelability in the city,” Fryer said. “We are viewed as a leader in this area of accessibility.” Before the work was done in her neighbourhood, Tymm said there was a hodgepodge of curbs on sidewalks, which sometimes forced them to cross to the other side of the street to get to Lord Tweedsmuir. “I thought that was the most basic thing,” she said. “They should put it as a priority and get it done.” Tymm believes it’s little things like curbs that contribute to the communi-

ty’s overall wellness. The City of New Westminster has created maps identifying the safest routes for walking to school as part of its Active and Safe Routes to School Program. To date, maps have been created for all elementary schools and work is underway to create maps for the middle schools. In related news, a recent TransLink newsletter also indicates that New Westminster is a leader in terms of having accessible bus stops. While the total percentage of accessible bus stops in Metro Vancouver is 57.9 per cent, TransLink reports that 70.9 per cent of the bus stops in New Westminster are accessible. The City of New Westminster has repealed racist bylaws targeting Chinese Canadians. City staff spent eight months researching council minutes from 1860 to 1926 and found the city discriminated against the Chinese community regarding land and buildings, city regulations, employment opportunities and other areas. In September 2010, the City of New Westminster formally apologized for those actions. On Monday, council unanimously supported a “discrimination repeal bylaw” that rescinded bylaws involv-

ing racial discrimination that had been approved by New Westminster city council up until 1926. Those included banning contractors for public works from hiring Chinese labour, prohibiting the employment of Chinese labour for street-making in the city, excluding Chinese people from working on the branch railway, and inserting “white labour clauses” in all leases. While the city had apologized for its racist actions toward Chinese Canadians, Coun. Bob Osterman noted that the bylaws remained on the books and should be repealed. “I think it shows the good faith of the City of New Westminster to clean up the record and set it straight,” said Coun. Bill Harper.

Harper thanked Osterman for bringing forward the “undone business” as part of the Chinese reconciliation process. “It’s not easy looking into the city’s past, but I think it’s been a really valuable process for the city,” said Coun. Jonathan Cote. Coun. Jaimie McEvoy said it’s a step that means a great deal to people in the Chinese community who remember when those laws were in place. “We are owning up to the past, recognizing it,” he said. “We are willing to make amends.” Coun. Lorrie Williams said the bylaws are no longer in effect, but it’s a good symbolic gesture.

It sounds nightmarish – living in pain all day, every day. But chronic pain is the reality for close to 20 per cent of Canadians. Now, New Westminster residents will have a chance to learn about the affliction and what they can do about it at a workshop April 4. Pain B.C. has organized the event at Royal Columbian Hospital and invited renowned physiotherapist Neil Pearson to help bring about some understanding of chronic pain and the latest research on how to control it. “The estimates are that one in five Canadians are living with chronic pain of various kinds from all kinds of different particular diseases, whether it’s arthritis or fibromyalgia or other diseases. Sometimes it’s from a fall or vehicle accident from things that are not necessarily diagnosable,” said Maria Hudspith, Pain B.C.’s executive director. “(Pearson will) be explaining the neurophysiology of pain and then helping people to understand the things they can do to influence their own

experience of pain.” Pearson runs a painbased physiotherapy clinic in Penticton, where he also teaches therapeutic yoga and breathing techniques shown to reduce pain. Beyond his own practice, Pearson educates other health professionals on the latest in pain research. Cliché as it sounds, pain felt elsewhere in the body can by quite literally in someone’s head. “Certainly as the science of the brain moves forward, there’s increasing understanding of the connection between mind and body and how pain, over time, alters people’s central nervous systems,” Hudspith said. “Basically people’s wiring can become faulty. It’s like the body feels pain because something has happened and then it just keeps going on feeling pain even when the thing that initially started it is resolved.” Hudspith said studies have shown people’s pain symptoms decrease when they begin learning about the causes of pain. “Even just understanding what’s going on in their bodies and what they can

do has a tremendous impact on people’s confidence, people’s ability and consequently on their experience of pain,” she said. Hudspith said there is a dearth of pain-based training for most health-care professionals, citing a recent study that found, on average, veterinarians spend two to five times as much time studying pain management as nurses, doctors or physiotherapists. “It’s really quite startling to think that people come out of their university education as nurses or physicians or other healthcare providers with a deep understanding of that, but it’s just not the case,” she said. recent “bum” spiel helped raise some funds and awareness about colon cancer. The Royal City Curling Club teamed up with Surrey resident Debbie Imada on the March 19 event. Imada, a two-year colorectal cancer survivor, spearheaded the event as part of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, which is celebrated in Canada in March. “It went really well,” she said. “We had over 60 people come out. Everybody seemed to really enjoy themselves. We raised over $1,160.” While she’d been hoping to raise $2,000, Imada was pleased with the result and with the support from participants and businesses that donated raffle prizes. Imada was diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal

cancer when she was 43. In the following two years she underwent two surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation and dealt with side effects of chemotherapy that left her hands numb. Having had hemorrhoids after her son was born, Imada thought they had returned. Instead, doctors found a tumour. “People need to be aware,” said Imada, who lost a friend to colon cancer the same week of her fundraiser. “The screening is so simple and not being done. It is horrendous.” It’s estimated 22,500 Canadians (12,400 men and 10,100 women) will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer this year and 9,100 (5,000 men and 4,100 women) will die from it. The National Cancer Institute of Canada states that colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer and the second most common cause of death from cancer among men and women – second only to lung cancer. he New Westminster Chamber of Commerce and the Hyack Festival Association jointly hosted the 2011 Hyack / Chamber Gala Dinner and Auction on Saturday, March 12 at the Inn at the Quay. Hundreds of items generously donated by local businesses and individuals were up for bid at the Silent and Live Auctions and raffle prizes were won throughout the evening. SimonFraserUniversitychalked up its third B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League title in four years. The Clan club team defeated regular season champion Thompson Rivers University 5-2 in the provincial playoff final at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre on Sunday. Senior captain and game first star Paul Moscone led the Clan with back-to-back goals between the second and third periods, including the eventual game-winning tally midway through the final frame. Moscone’s second goal gave the defending BCIHL champs a 3-0 lead. The Clan advanced into the provincial intercollegiate final following a 5-1 win over the University of Victoria on Saturday. Bill Smith, with his first of two back-to-back goals in the final frame, scored the eventual gamewinning tally in the opening minute of the third period. Jaime Laprise and Emanuel Haider, with an empty-net tally, also scored in the four-goal period. Former Saskatoon Blades major junior forward Ben Van Lare, on an assist from first star Moscone, tied the game 1-1 for SFU with the only goal of the second period. SFU opened the provincial championship tournament with an 8-6 win over Okanagan College. Former Burnaby Express junior Colby Kulhanek led the Clan with a hat trick. First star James Isaacs had a goal and two helpers for the defending champs. SFU lost 3-0 to Thompson Rivers in the playdowns on Friday. UVic edged Trinity Western University 3-2 in overtime in the other playoff. It’s no coincidence we were not the most fatigued team, even with the extra game.” Coletta reiterated Moscone’s comments that Friday’s 3-0 loss to TRU was against the run of play. But manning up in the most important game of the season is something the team leaders are passing on to the newer players, he said. “I think we’re starting to build a tradition here,” Coletta said. “Now we know what it takes to win these kind of games.” SFU won last year’s championship final, edging the Kamloops club 2-1. The Clan were upset 3-1 in the 2008/09 final by the University of Victoria after winning its first B.C. intercollegiate title 3-0 over the University of the Fraser Valley a season earlier. With the team’s history of onice success, Clan general manager Jeff Dubois hopes to one day parlay that into the school’s varsity athletics program. “(Coletta and Dubois) have been working hard at this for a while. This is one step closer to that dream,” Moscone said.

Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club won both the junior and senior men’s national championship titles in Edmonton. The Simon Fraser University-based club was a runaway winner in both age groups, winning the junior title 49-32 over runner-up London-Western and 43-27 over Montreal in the senior division. A big reason for the club’s win at senior was a podium sweep in the

super-heavyweight category by champion Arjan Bhullar, runner-up and also junior national champion Sunny Dhinsa of W.J. Mouat Secondary, and third-place finisher Gurdeep Beesla. Burnaby Mountain also won the 66-kilogram and 74kg weight senior classes by Olympian Haislan Garcia and Matt Gentry, respectively. John Pineda of Burnaby placed third at 60kg. Manjot Sandhu also finished in third at 96kg. At the junior level,

Burnaby Mountain won seven medals, including Fido Sahota’s bronze at 74kg. Along with Dhinsa, Sukhan Chahal and Chamit Phulka both placed first in their respective 50kg and 96kg weight categories. Isaac Bernard, Brandon Richardson and Jasmit Phulka also placed among the top three in their divisions. The Burnaby Mountain junior and senior women’s teams both placed second in aggregate club standings.

Amanda Gerhart, at 59kg, and Hillary Greening, at 82kg, both won gold in the senior class. Stacie Anaka placed third at 63kg, while Miranda Dick and Ashlea McManus, and junior-aged Jenna McLatchy and junior champion Justina DiStasio all placed in the top six in their respective senior weight classes. DiStasio was the lone gold medalist among the junior women, winning at 72kg. Also medalling at the junior ranks was Gina

Carpenter, a runner-up at 55kg, and Michiko Araki, a bronze medallist at 44kg. Hiriko Araki, Nickie Brar, Bailey Halovorson, Ashley Verhaege and McLatchy all placed among the top six. In Greco-Roman wrestling, Dhinsa won a third individual medal, taking the senior 120kg division without a point scored against him. Dhinsa won the gold in the men’s super heavyweigh class with a 5-0 victory over Charles Thoms of Black Bear.

Middie named ﬁnalist for Lowe’s award New Westminster ’s Kevin Crowley was named a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior Class Award Monday. The Stony Brook University senior field lacrosse midfielder is one of 10 finalists shortlisted for the annual award that honours a student/athlete who makes a positive impact to their community. Crowley was a first team All-American last season. He currently boasts a 3.37 grade-point-average with a double major in business management and psychology. Crowley was named the State University of New York chancellor’s scholar athlete of the year in 2010, as well as the America East conference scholar/athlete for men’s lacrosse. Last week, Crowley set a Stony Brook University record for career points in a 17-9 loss to No. 10-ranked Cornell in non-conference NCAA Divison I field lacrosse March 22. Crowley scored two goals and added two assists to lift his career total to 202 points, breaking the old mark of 201 set by Jason Cappadoro in 2006. On Saturday, Crowley upped his new record with a five-point outing, including four more goals, in Stony Brook’s 13-6 win over Bryant.

Burnaby Laker forward Trevor Moore scored perhaps the most important goal for the Robert Morris University varsity field lacrosse program. Moore scored RMU’s game-winning goal in a 7-5 victory over No. 17-ranked Bucknell, the program’s first win over a nationallyranked opponent. Earlier in the month, Moore became the firstever Robert Morris player to surpass the 100-goal plateau. RMU teammate Corbyn Tao matched Moore’s 100goal record mark, following a season-high four goals in an 18-10 win over Bellarmine on March 19. The New Westminster Salmonbellie was later named the Northeast conference player of the week.

Current Canadian college national champions RuiLin Huang and Melody Liang, along with Douglas grad Alvin Lau, won two events apiece at the Glencoe club March 25 to 27. Huang won the women’s singles, easily defeating Canadian No. 5 Charmaine Reid of Ontario 21-9, 21-6. New Westminster teen Patrick Thornhill won a Silver Gloves provincial boxing title in Prince George on March 19. The 16-year-old Queensbourough Boxing Club fighter outpointed hometown favourite Joey McKerricher of Two Rivers Boxing Club to win the 152pound title in their threeround championship bout. Thornhill will now put his boxing skills to the test at the provincial Golden Gloves on April 15 and 16 at a venue to be announced. “It’s good, I worked really hard for the fight. It was a really good feeling,” said Thornhill, who was also named the best fighter at the tournament following the competiion. Express futures in Reid deal

The Coquitlam Express added a bit of sandpaper, a fluid first pass and a bevy of veteran presence Tuesday when the club announced the final pieces of a deal that took root more than three months ago. The club picked up defenceman Clinton Atkinson of New Westminster and forward Cody Michelle from the Salmon Arm SilverBacks in exchange for Brad Reid, a former assistant captain with the club, who left town in December. “When we gave up Brad, who was a quality kid, we had a couple of teams bidding, and this was the by far, in our minds, the best deal we could put together and from our standpoint we’re pretty happy with it,” Express general manager Darcy Rota said Tuesday. Atkinson is a 5-10 defenceman who put up close to a point-per-game average last season, posting 48 points, including three goals, in 57 contests. He suited up with the Western Hockey League’s Moose Jaw Warriors during the 2009 and 2010 campaigns and put up 18 points in 88 games. The 20-year-old saw limited action last year, and only played two games for the Tri-City Americans. “Clinton has got Western Hockey League experience in him, and when we made that trade for (Reid), he was a big part of what we’re looking in coming back next year — he’s a puck-moving defenceman with some skill and obviously he can run a power play for us. On top of that, he brings some veteran leadership as well,” said Express head coach Jon Calvano. Michelle, 19, made his B.C. Hockey League debut last season and finished the campaign with 11 goals and 28 points in 58 games. A 19-year-old righthanded shot, the Saskatchewan native is listed at six feet and weighing 173 pounds. “He brings that bigtime leadership aspect as well, Calvano said. “Prince Albert is probably the No. 1 major midget AAA program in the country.”

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins led the Red Deer Rebels to a hot start in Western Hockey League playoffs. The North Burnaby centre was named the game’s first star in Red Deer’s opening 5-3 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings in the first game of the WHL Eastern conference playoff last Friday. Nugent-Hopkins scored two goals, including the game-winning tally at 14.25 of the third period, in a four-point performance. He also potted the insurance marker a minute later to put the

home team up 1-0 in the best-ofseven series. On Saturday, Nugent-Hopkins tallied his third goal of the playoffs, opening the scoring midway through the first period in an eventual 5-1 win over Edmonton. The consensus No. 1 prospect from the WHL, Nugent-Hopkins, was also the go-to guy in a wild four-goal third period that saw Red Deer take a stranglehold in the series, winning 3-1 in Edmonton on Monday. Nugent-Hopkins took control in the latter half of the final period, setting up both the game-tying and game-winning tallies in an

eight-minute span. The 17-year-old was particularly brilliant on teammate Daulton Siwak’s game-winner in the final two minutes of play. LUSNEY, William (Bill)

October 10, 1916 - March 25, 2011

Bill died peacefully in Eagle Ridge Hospital at 7:25pm. Predeceased by his parents, Peter and Anastasia; brother, Steven; sisters, Evelyn, Anne (Rooney) and Jennie. He leaves his loving wife, Jacqueline of 64 years, younger brother John and several nieces and nephews. Bill had a very varied career. Born in Rivers, Manitoba, he left home at an early age to join the Royal American Shows. During the 2nd World War he enlisted in the 1st Battalion Midland Regiment, the Canadian Army (active) at Prince Rupert, BC. After discharge, he moved to Fort William, Ontario, becoming a bartender at the Adanac Hotel. Subsequently he became a restaurateur with a friend. In 1946, Bill married Jacqueline and moved to BC to operate a coffee shop in Surrey for a family friend. When this was sold in the early 50’s, Bill became a bartender for the Elks Club in New Westminster; a year or two stint as a clothier for Bickerton and Black in New Westminster and subsequently manager of the New Westminster Elks Club. During this time he also ran the Elks Gun Club in Coquitlam, belonged to the Business Men’s Club of BC, the Gyro Club of New Westminster, and he was a long time member of the Royal Canadian Legion, and a past member of the Perfection Lodge of the Masons. Along with a friend, Harry Marrison, they purchased 50 acres near Egmont, BC, during which time he had an accident on the property which forced his retirement. Bill was a gentle man, never uttering a derogatory word against anyone. He was very tired; his heart struggling very hard to the end. On his last day, he said he just wanted to sleep and pass on. We are very grateful for all the assistance from Veterans Affairs Canada; from the Fraser Health; and for the care and kindness he received from the doctors, nurses and care givers at Eagle Ridge Hospital. Rest in peace my darling! Family Owned
