It seems that local politicos have yet to venture in to Burger Heaven to bump up their party’s numbers in the restaurant’s burger poll. Kendra Stogrin, a server at the restaurant, said the bun-official poll is going down well at the downtown eatery. “They like that we do the burger poll,” she said about customers. “They enjoy it. They think it’s fun.” While the local politicians have been known to bring their posses to the restaurant to boost their party’s polling, Stogrin said that sometimes doesn’t happen until later in the campaign. Here are the results after more than one week on the campaign trail: Stephen Harper – 81 votes; Jack Layton – 56 votes; Michael Ignatieff – 25 votes; Elizabeth May – 20 votes; Gilles Duceppe – 13 votes; and undecided – 32 votes.

The City of New Westminster is giving a military surplus store more time before it determines whether or not to revoke its business licence. City council was set to hold a showcause hearing Monday, at which time it would consider cancelling the business licence for Westley Military Surplus at 623 Front St., a local business recently raided by police. The business sells used military supplies and equipment/supplies relating to camping and outdoor activities, but it has also been licensed under the Canada Firearms Program to sell non-prohibited ammunition. According to a city staff report filed at the meeting, police have various concerns about the business, including the sale of live ammunition to people whether or not they have the required documentation to possess or purchase ammunition; the business “is actively trafficking starter pistols and starter type Uzi machine guns”; and the company president provided “direction on several occasions to two different undercover police officers on how to convert starter pistols into functional firearms.” “During a search of the business on Feb. 25, 2011, a semi-automatic C-8 carbon assault rifle was seized along with some soft body armor,” said the report. “Both the assault rifle and the body armor are unlawful to own or possess.” City council could decide to suspend Westley Military Surplus Ltd.’s business licence for a specified amount of time, cancel the licence effective immediately

The B.C. police complaint commissioner has cancelled a public hearing and apologized to two New Westminster Police Service constables facing a review related to a 2009 police-involved shooting. Commissioner Stan Lowe informed Const. Josh Hooker, Const. Gerald Lau and New Westminster Chief Const. Dave Jones on April 1 that the public hearing had been cancelled in light of some new information provided recently by Jones. “It was information the commissioner had not considered previously, and it was material to the case,” said Rollie Woods,

deputy police complaint commissioner. “We came back to Victoria, and the commissioner immediately made the decision that he was going to cancel the public hearing.” A confidentiality provision in the Police Act prevents the commission or its staff from giving details about an incident, and Jones was not available to comment. Lowe also acknowledged policy changes made by New West police that “significantly reduce the likelihood of a similar occurrence.” Woods said it is somewhat unusual for the commissioner to apologize to police that have faced a review, but the unusual circumstances merited it.

“The commissioner knows that having a public hearing called and an officer being named as a respondent in that situation is bound to have an impact on them,” Woods said. “These are stressful situations, and, in hindsight, knowing this additional information, he felt it was appropriate to contact the officers and offer them a personal apology for putting them through that.” Lau and Hooker fired eight shots into a fleeing stolen vehicle after it rammed Hooker’s cruiser and began moving toward the officers in the McDonald’s drive-thru on McBride Boulevard in January 2009. The Vancouver Police Department conducted the investigation into the police-

involved shooting portion of the incident and determined there was sufficient evidence to establish that Hooker and Lay had committed misconduct. Lowe then reviewed the Vancouver police findings and ordered a public hearing probing an allegation of abuse of authority. New Westminster police spokesperson Sgt. Gary Weishaar said the news comes as a great relief to both constables, who were forced to make a tough decision in a highly dangerous situation. “Our organization is grateful for the commissioner acknowledging the fine work our police officers had done under great duress and that they acted appropriately,” he said.

A Vancouver developer is hoping an anti-harmonized sales tax bet will pay off when it comes to selling new condo units in New Westminster. Wanson Development announced Tuesday that the company would not be charging any HST on the 160 one- and two-bedroom condos at Eight West, a soon-to-be built fourstorey, mixed-use development at the old Canadian Tire site at 21

Eighth Ave. Bill Morrison, president of Pilothouse Real Estate and spokesman for the development, said Wanson is being forced to react to a curious trend in the housing market that has seen buyers flocking to old homes instead of new ones to skip paying the HST. “The HST has had a dramatic impact on the new home market. As a result, Wanson Development is taking a very public stand against the HST, and we’ve decided not to charge or collect

the HST here at Eight West,” he said. “The buyer’s perception is that it adds an enormous amount of cost. We’re finding in the marketplace right now that buyers are doing everything they can to avoid paying the HST, and that means paying even more for an older product than they would for a brand new product.” He pointed to a neighbouring 11-year-old property that he said is listing and selling at higher prices than Eight West’s units retail for. The decision to swallow the

HST was more about marketing the project than it was a political stand against the tax, Morrison said. “We’re not necessarily antiHST. We believe in democracy, and we believe in the June referendum, the HST will be voted out,” he said. “We’ve placed hundreds of thousands of dollars aside in case it isn’t, because in this situation, the developer, Wanson, will be paying the HST on behalf of the buyers.” Mayor Wayne Wright was on hand for the announcement, call-

ing it a “win-win-win” scenario for the developer, the city and prospective new homebuyers. Asked why he was supporting the development, Wright said it was long overdue for that site. “We’ve been waiting for this project for years and years and years. It’s in our bucket. We wanted this location to be done and to be done to this quality and standard,” he said. “I’m supporting the development in general, and I’m supporting people coming to New Westminster to have a good place to live.”

It was a different story in the May 2008 federal election, when NDP candidate Dawn Black beat Conservative candidate Yonah Martin by less than 1,500 votes. “I am not taking anything for granted. Every vote is important. I think it’s going to be a battle again,” Donnelly said. “Harper is looking for his majority. He is looking for 12 seats. He is targeting swing ridings like this one.” Liberal candidate Ken Lee and Green candidate Rebecca Helps, who also ran in the byelection, are once again seeking to become the riding’s next MP.

Focus on the HST The harmonized sales tax continues to be an election issue for some constituents in New WestminsterCoquitlam. NDP candidate Fin Donnelly issued a news release Tuesday saying things started to go downhill for Conservative candidate Diana Dilworth in the May 2008 byelection when she stated on CKNW that she would vote in favour of the HST if elected. “I can’t believe the Conservatives admit they are still supporting the HST. The byelection gave voters in my riding their first opportunity to vote on the tax, and they overwhelmingly rejected it,” he said. “Seventeen months later, voters across the province are still steaming over Harper’s tax hike, and the Conservatives just don’t get it.” Dilworth did not return calls to The Record by its deadline. Her campaign office said she was out door knocking. Donnelly said he continues to hear concerns

about the HST while door knocking. “When you get a chance to talk to people, it does come up under the broad issue of affordability,” he said. “It’s still an issue that people are not happy about.” Donnelly said he’s surprised Conservatives continue to support the HST even though many British Columbians oppose the tax. He said a Conservative official told CKNW Monday that “the HST is right for British Columbians,” which shows the Harper Conservatives remain out of touch. “This election is about who British Columbians trust to represent their interests in Ottawa,” said Donnelly. “The Harper Conservatives aren’t listening and haven’t learned their lesson. The New Democrats are the only party in B.C. that can beat the Conservatives and stop a Stephen Harper majority.”

Forseth returns Former member of Parliament Paul Forseth is hoping to return to Ottawa, but he’ll have to unseat three-term NDP MP Peter Julian to do so. Forseth, who served in the House of Commons from 1997 to 2006, is the Conservative candidate in Burnaby-New Westminster. Forseth was elected MP for New WestminsterCoquitlam-Burnaby in 1993 (defeating incumbent NDP MP Dawn Black) and 1997 as a Reform Party candidate, in 2000 as a Canadian Alliance candidate and in 2004 as a Conservative Party candidate. Black topped Forseth in the 2006 federal election. Julian has represented Burnaby-New Westminster since June 2004. He was reelected in 2006 and 2008. Other candidates vying in the riding are Liberal Garth Evans and the Green party’s Carrie McLaren.

campaigns, restrict donations from members of the public to modest sums and ban donations of any kind from corporations and trade unions. The bulk of any given candidate’s campaign money comes from the public purse, in the form of a $2 subsidy for every vote their party garnered in the previous election times the number of years that have passed since. The effect is that it is more in the interests of a candidate to curry favour

from voters than to do so from big business or labour. That will change if Harper is given an opportunity to put his plan into action. It is an idea with huge benefits for private interests and the parties that favour them, and absolutely nothing for ordinary Canadians. If there was one reason, and one reason only to place a vote designed to neutralize the Conservatives, this would, in our opinion, merit that vote.

What direction will NDP choose? IN THE HOUSE KEITH BALDREY

ill NDP members choose a leader based on who is best suited to get the party elected to government or who best represents their political philosophy or ideology? If the former is the basis for voting, Mike Farnworth should be the hands-down winner. If it’s the latter, then Adrian Dix may prove the victor. The latest Ipsos-Reid poll shows that Farnworth beats his rivals every which way when it comes to who stands the best chance of attracting voters to the NDP. The others aren’t even close to matching his popularity with the general public, or with people who voted NDP in the last election. He is also the only candidate who, when pitted head to head with Premier Christy Clark when it comes to who would make the best premier, offers a competitive contest. (The online poll was conducted March 31 to April 4. With a sample size of 700, the margin of error is plus or minus 3.7 per cent.) The poll is the latest one to show that Farnworth continues to best his rivals in general popularity. But will these polls influence the 28,000 or so party members when they begin voting for a new

leader next week? The question of winning power versus maintaining ideological positions has long vexed many NDP members. Some seem more comfortable in the atmosphere of Official Opposition rather than in government, which requires constant compromising. Farnworth is very much the most centrist candidate, which explains his broader appeal. Dix is a class warfare advocate, who unabashedly wants to push the party left because he feels that would motivate its core to get out and vote. Dix correctly notes more than a million voters simply don’t vote. Although I don’t think a majority of them necessarily adhere to socialist values, presumably a number of them are indeed disaffected NDP voters who may find Dix’s candidacy attractive. But the poll seems to suggest otherwise. On the questions of who would be most likely to motivate people to vote for the NDP, Farnworth comes out on top by a wide margin (25 per cent versus just eight per cent for Dix and four per cent for John Horgan). Dix, on the other hand, is the distinct choice among voters when asked who would be the least likely candidate to get people to vote for his party (19 per cent versus just nine per cent for Farnworth). Perhaps most telling, however, is how the candidates fare in a head-to-head matchup with Clark on the question of who would make the best premier.

What happened to courtesy? Dear Editor:

On this past Sunday, just after the noon hour, I witnessed one of the worst acts of service that I feel others living in New Westminster need to be aware of as someone could have been seriously hurt. I was on the Cumberland Street hill facing north at Eighth Avenue, waiting for the light to change. We all know how steep that hill is. One of the Royal City taxis was pulled over about two feet from the sidewalk waiting for his fare to get out. It was an elderly lady trying to get out from the backseat with her handbag, umbrella and her bag of groceries. As I watched, I could see she was struggling to get out with the items, with no assistance from the driver. Finally out, and the door closed and the driver, ◗NDP Page 7

without as much as check in his rear-view mirror, sped off down the hill, leaving the lady on the street trying to maintain her balance. Within seconds, the elderly lady fell to the ground. I and three other motorists exited our vehicles and were at her side to assist her. While the four of us checked her for injuries and then helped her to her feet, we all commented on the lack of service the cabbie gave to this lady. Why not pull right to the sidewalk? Why not get out of your cab to assist her out of the backseat? Why not wait to make sure that she was on her way to her home? It would have taken maybe three minutes out of your day to help her to the entrance sidewalk to her home and make sure she was OK. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor: We are new residents to New Westminster (my husband and myself), and imagine our surprise when the utility bill showed and we were charged the same amount for water, sewer and garbage as a household of four or six. The City of New Westminster recently delivered composting bins to all households in the city, and one must assume from that they are thinking sustainability. So if sustainability is important in the city, why then would the water not be metered? If water was metered, each household would be able to monitor their water use; therefore having a reason to conserve water, as they could control their usage and therefore their bill. Surrey, Richmond and a number of other communities have started metering their water and the cities have found huge savings in their water consumption and therefore their purchase of the water. Metering water is a win for the city, a win for the residents and a win for the environment. Brenda Southam, New Westminster

Enforce city dog bylaws Dear Editor: You recently ran a letter from Fanny Hsu regarding people not picking up after their dogs in Queen’s Park (Unleashed dogs an issue, Letters to the editor, The Record, March 19). She seemed like an intelligent person with some valid points to make, until the last paragraph of her letter. She thinks the parks should be providing plastic bags and paper towels for owners to pick up after their dogs? Does she also think that the park should be providing ashtrays for the smokers to pick up their cigarette butts? There are actually metal boxes in the park for people to leave plastic bags for

picking up after dogs. If people choose to take their dogs to the park, then it is their responsibility to bring bags to pick up after their dogs. There is a bylaw regarding people that don’t pick up after their dogs (and also a bylaw regarding smoking in the park). The bylaws should be enforced.

Job search is frustrating Dear Editor: I’m a new immigrant. I have been in Canada for just 10 months. Many friends of mine ask me: how about living in Canada? I really want to say to them: Canada – it’s not so easy to love you. Finding a job is the most important thing for immigrants, but it’s also the most difficult thing. Many immigrants have good education background and many years working experience in their country. Yet, with all their experience, we cannot get a job, even though we are junior professionals. What is the cause of this situation? Firstly, English is our second language. Learning any foreign language takes a long time and a great deal of effort. Secondly, almost all available work goes to those with local education and local experience. Yet, without local working experience, you can’t find a job. It’s a cycle that’s very frustrating for us! How do we solve this problem? I think the key way is to help immigrants get local working experience, which is related with their profession, while improving working English. Some might say, there is a lot of government funding. We must channel some of that funding directly into the workplace. Invest in the workplace by giving government funds directly to enterprises to help immigrants. This would be a win-win for both immigrants and enterprises. Lucy Gao, New Westminster

Clark has a wide lead over both Dix (44 per cent to 25 per cent for Dix) and Horgan (41 per cent versus 22 per cent). Farnworth trails Clark on this question as well, but the gap is sufficiently narrow (38 per cent for Clark to Farnworth’s 32 per cent) to suggest it would be a competitive contest between the two. Farnworth leads among general voters, NDP voters and even B.C. Liberal voters on every question. That’s why a number of B.C. Liberals have told reporters they are most worried about a potential victory by him on April 17, and why they are rubbing their hands with relish at

the prospect of a Dix win. Of course, all polls are simply snapshots of public opinion. That opinion can swiftly change. Farnworth’s personal popularity could sour with people once more scrutiny is paid to his leadership and his party’s positions. The NDP leadership race has received scant media attention, which means no bad publicity has come their way. And a Dix victory may indeed fire up the party faithful and motivate more voters on the left to come out and vote in numbers not seen previously. Finally, one must consider the move of longtime federal Conservative MP John Cummins to provin-

cial politics. If he breathes life into the moribund B.C. Conservative Party, he may take enough votes away from the B.C. Liberals to allow the NDP to win enough seats to form government even if its popular vote shrinks. A similar outcome occurred in the 1996 election, when Glen Clark won power with fewer votes than the B.C. Liberals because the B.C. Reform party took almost 10 per cent of the votes. Licence: Hearing delayed for two weeks ◗ continued from page 1

or not take any action. The city had invited the owner, Westley Baker, to appear before city council before it makes a decision about the business licence. Derek A. Birch, a solicitor hired by Baker regarding the proposed licence cancellation, expressed concern about the speed at which the city is moving to cancel the business licence of a 25-year member of the business community based on three letters from police. He requested a two-week delay in the hearing so more information can be obtained. Baker’s next appearance on the criminal charges is on Friday in Surrey provincial court. He’s being represented on those matters by lawyer Jack Harris, who told Birch last week that he has received no disclosure about the type of evidence facing his client. “We know the charges Mr. Baker is facing,” Birch said. “We don’t know the substance or any of the details of the allegations.” A staff report stated that following a fivemonth investigation into Westley’s Military Surplus, police recommended numerous firearms-related offences against Baker, including ammunition trafficking, weapons trafficking, possession for the purpose of trafficking firearms and counselling to make automatic firearms. Tom McCluskie, superintendent officer in charge of the Combined Forces Enforcement Unit Gang Task Force, said the region has experienced a dramatic increase in gang violence since 2007. He said police have “great concern” about the impact of the business owner’s “careless regard” for

distributing starter pistols. “During the course of this investigation, the gang task force learned that converted starter pistols have been recovered at various crime scenes in the Lower Mainland area, on Vancouver Island and now in Toronto,” he said in a letter to city council. “These recovered converted starter pistols are of the same make and model as ones purchased from Westley’s. Investigators believe that Mr. Baker’s careless distribution of firearms and ammunition has placed the safety of the citizens of New Westminster and the Lower Mainland at risk.” Birch said that proceeding with the hearing about the business licence under a “veneer of organized crime and murder” does not serve the interests of fairness. “I think we’d learn a lot more,” he said about delaying the hearing by a couple of weeks. “I think there is a lot in these (police) letters that will never be substantiated.” Birch said the city’s decision to consider revoking the business licence is based on the activities being considered in the courthouse. He believes it will be shown in court that blank-firing guns are not capable of firing real ammunition or being converted to fire real ammunition, as has been alleged by police. Birch said his information is that Westley Military Surplus is currently not selling starter pistols, blank firearms, body armor or anything like that. “All of that is gone,” he said. “It is a store full of clothes and old military memorabilia.” Council agreed to delay the show-cause hearing for two weeks.

New Westminster cop found guilty of assault BY ANDREW FLEMING REPORTER afleming@royalcityrecord.com

A New Westminster police officer has been convicted of assaulting a newspaper delivery man while off-duty and intoxicated. Vancouver Provincial Court judge Jodie Werier found Jeffrey Klassen guilty of one count of assault. In court on Tuesday, she said she found that Klassen had no justification to either jump on Firoz Khan or to detain him. Werier read out a 75-minute decision in which she said she didn’t believe Klassen’s testimony that he’d only consumed nine to 11 beers during an eight-hour drinking session on Jan. 21, 2009 with two other off-duty officers, West Vancouver Const. Griffin Gillan and Delta Const. Blair Tanino. Gillan previously pleaded guilty to assault and was sentenced to 21 days in jail, to be served in the community, followed by six months of probation. Tanino was not charged. Gillan left his friends at the Roxy on Granville Street and confronted Khan, who was delivering a stack of newspapers

to the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Burrard Street, at 2:30 a.m. He phoned his friends for assistance during his assault on Khan. Upon arriving in a taxi, Klassen jumped on Khan. “There was no justification for Klassen to have intervened at the time in the manner that he did,” said Werier. Werier acquitted Klassen of possession of stolen property for having Khan’s cellphone in his pocket. Klassen is due to be sentenced May 18. He is also currently being investigated under the Police Act, and his future as a police officer has yet to be decided. “At the conclusion of the Police Act investigation, a discipline proceeding will be initiated, at which time Const. Klassen’s employment with the New Westminster Police Service will be determined.,” said police spokesperson Sgt. Gary Weishaar. “Const. Klassen has been suspended from duty since the criminal charges were laid, and the suspension continues. The New Westminster police board will meet to review Const. An arts advisory task force continues to provide invaluable input into the planning of the Royal City’s future civic centre. Coun. Bill Harper, who is a member of the task force, said the group has been providing the city with valuable input about the needs of an art centre. The future civic centre on Columbia Street includes arts components such as a theatre, a gallery and the city’s museum. In addition to considering the ceramic and pottery program, he said the task force has considered a number of technical issues regarding the centre. “These artists are so tal-

ented,” said Coun. Betty McIntosh, who has also been attending the task force’s meetings. “They are so willing to give of their time and expertise.” McIntosh said the task force members have made sure the city knows that natural light will destroy artwork, so a gallery shouldn’t have windows. “If you have the UVA rays coming in, you destroy artwork,” she said. “The museum is the same, you have to have a very controlled environment.” Artists serving on the task force also provided input that saw a pottery/ceramic studio being removed from the plans because of concerns that dust and dirt could harm artifacts in other areas of

the civic centre. “It is basically called a dirty artwork form,” McIntosh said about pottery. “You’ve got dust, you’ve got water.” The task force cited concerns about the compatibility of this art form with the other uses in the civic centre, including the convention/banquet, theatre, museum and archives and art gallery spaces. Because of the concerns identified by the task force, city staff supported the idea of providing a pottery/ceramic program at an alternate venue outside of the multiuse civic facility. Most recently, the task force has been discussing the type of staffing that will be needed at the civic centre.

The kids sitting in the stairwell playing a beguiling duet on their guitars aren’t skipping class. Nor are those down the hallway, sprawled with their guitars against the lockers. They’re just part of the fun that is guitar class at New Westminster Secondary School – where a recent donation is making guitar music even more accessible for students. Peter Zaenker, the school’s guitar teacher, has been on a mission to offer more chances for the students who pack the school’s guitar classes – he has four classes this year, with students from all grades. “My goal is to give kids more opportunities,” he said. “There’s kids here I think could benefit from having better instruments.” He points out that some of his students don’t have their own instruments, and some may come from families where the purchase of a musical instrument just isn’t possible. Fundraising can be a challenge, he notes, especially because the guitar classes at NWSS aren’t performance-based – unlike choir and band, where regular public performances keep those programs in the public eye. So Zaenker was delighted to discover a charitable Adopt an Instrument program offered through the Music B.C. Charitable Foundation and SHORE 104.3 FM radio station. The program offers both donated, refurbished instruments and brand-new instruments to schools in need. Zaenker got to choose some donated instruments – from a storage room at SHORE FM, he claimed a host of acoustic guitars, plus a few electric guitars and a bass guitar. The donation also includes a variety of sheet music and guitar picks. The school will also receive 15 brand-new acoustic Epiphones from the Gibson guitar company. In total, his classes will see about 30 new instruments – which, he notes, will allow him to lend them to students who could benefit from having a bet-

There’s so much you can do with a guitar compared to other instruments,” he says, noting you can strum, or pick, or finger-pick. “I was interested in drums, but guitar got me because it was kind of more available, you can bring it somewhere.” Outside of school, he says, he plays around on his own but

just about anything. “I’ve tried many things, like electric guitar, and many different styles of playing,” he says. “I just like playing for the fun of it.” It’s that love of the instrument that Zaenker wants to be able to bring to even more students, now that he has more instruments to use. “It’s pretty amazing at this school how much music they have,” he says. And, he notes, he’s committed to staying at the school to help the guitar program continue to grow. “My goal is to create some kind of guitar ensemble here, which isn’t so often seen in schools,” he says. The Northwest Giants are going where few B.C. midget hockey teams have dared to tread. The Burnaby-based major midget hockey team earned the right to represent the B.C./Alberta Pacific region at the Telus Cup national midget hockey championships, following a 3-1 victory over the Red Deer Optimist Rebels at the Burnaby Winter Club Saturday. The Giants opened the best-of-three regional final series with a 7-2 win at home on Friday. The three-time defending B.C. major midget playoff champions then swept the Alberta league winners in two straight games to become just the second-ever team from Burnaby to make it to the national midget championships. The Burnaby Winter Club Travellers, which included National Hockey League great Cliff Ronning in the lineup, is the only B.C. team to capture the gold medal at the midget championships, winning a then-Air Canada Cup national title in 1982. The Travellers also won a bronze medal at the midget nationals in 1980. An earlier Northwest Giants team under head coach Grant Kerr made it to the Telus Cup as the Pacific region representative when championship tournament host Red Deer beat the B.C. team in the regional final series in 2007. But B.C. has been all but shut out by its Alberta counterparts when it

St. Thomas More Collegiate junior Kevin Vigna shot the daylights out of the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour prodigy series at Morgan Creek Golf Course last weekend. The 15-year-old Burnaby independent school student carded a two day, six-under-par 138 to win the boy’s 14-to-16 age division and post the best overall score among a full field of 78 young golfers at the South Surrey course

AA high school golf titles with STM, carded a four-under 68 on the par-72, 6,638-yard Morgan Creek course on the opening day, tying him with defending champion Kevin Kwon of Pitt Meadows for the lead. Vigna and Kwon played together in the final round and were still tied after the front nine. Kwon was one-up heading to the final hole after both teens birdied the par-5 17th. With Kwon on the green, and

Vigna on the fringe with a 15-yard uphill chip, it was crunch time for the Coquitlam golfer. “I knew I had to make a birdie,” Vigna said. “(Kwon) came up to me and said, ‘You got to chip it in to tie,’ in a nice way to boost me up. I said, ‘Yeah, I’ll try.’ Vigna holed out his birdie attempt to finish with a twounder-par 70. Kwon missed his downhill putt and wound up with a 71, one shot back. “I wanted to play off, but it was hard to see him three-putt,” Vigna

added. With the win, Vigna is eligible for the Future Collegiate World Tour national championships in Florida or a qualifying spot at the U.S. Junior sectionals. He also earned a chance to qualify for the Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego, California. Closer to home, Vigna has his eye on qualifying for the Canadian junior championships this season, and coming in the top 10 at the B.C. juvenile tournament. Vigna also has a goal of a top25 finish at the CN Futurelinks.

The Burnaby Winter Club Bruins will be in Winnipeg this Thursday for a second crack in as many years at a third Western Canada bantam hockey championship banner. The bantam AAA Bruins earned their second straight appearance at the westerns following a 6-3 win over the host Abbotsford Hawks at the recent provincials. The last time, the winter club competed for a western title in Winnipeg, the Bruins came away with the banner in 2007 against this year’s hosts, the Winnipeg Sharks. Last year, Burnaby hosted the championships, which was won by the Winnipeg Monarchs over the Calgary Bisons in a third period of overtime. Also taking part from Manitoba will be this year’s provincial champion Winnipeg Hawks. The two Manitoba teams will open the fiveteam Western championships on Thursday. Alberta will be represented by the AAA league runner-up and playoff champion SSAC Southgate Lions, which took the AAA provincial series 3-1 over last year’s western Canadian runner-up and overall points leader, Calgary Bisons. The Lions will face off against the Saskatchewan league champs Prince Albert Pirates. Prince Albert capped an impressive 42-2-1 regular season, downing the Saskatoon Maniacs in the prairie association’s totalpoint playoff final. BWC takes on the host Sharks in Thursday’s night game. The Bruins then play the Southgate Lions on Friday morning, followed by a game against the Hawks later in the evening. The B.C. champs face Prince Albert in their only game on Saturday. Senior named player of week Stony Brook University senior Jordan McBride was named the America East conference player of the week on April 4. The New Westminster attack scored a season-high seven goals for the No. 15ranked Seawolves to a 16-5 victory over the University of Maryland – Baltimore County in the varsity field lacrosse season opener for both teams on April 1. McBride, the active Division 1 goal-scoring

leader in the NCAA, scored five of his team’s first eight goals in the match. “I’ve been slumping a little bit, so I did my best to get involved early,” said McBride in a Stony Brook online press release. McBride currently leads the nation among active goal scorers with 153 tallies. Stony Brook held the Maryland school scoreless for the first three quarters. McBride counted back-

to-back markers in the third period to give the Seawolves their biggest lead of the game at 14-0. McBride sits second in the conference, behind New Westminster teammate Kevin Crowley, in goals per game, with 2.38 an outing.
