Where to go when there’s ‘nothin’ to do’ BY MICHELLE HOPKINS

mhopkins@richmond-news.com

Movie nights, winter walks are just a few ways to keep kids busy

After all the Christmas gifts have been unwrapped and played with over and over again the inevitable happens … Soon, the kids come to you and utter four words parents everywhere dread to hear: “There’s nothing to do.” The News did a little digging around to find ways to entertain your children this holiday season. Many of the activities cost little or no money.

At Home

❚ Check your newspaper for local Christmas light displays and get in the car and have your kids spot the displays. ❚ Tap into your children’s creative side: Have your kids make their own Christmas displays by forging for holly berries, pine cones and whatever else they can find in nature. All you need to supply is a little glue and guidance. ❚ Involved your kids in planning a meal. They can choose the menu, go out with you to buy the groceries, help prepare the food and set the table ❚ Have your kids clean out their toy box. Bundle up the good stuff they don’t play with anymore and give it to charity. ❚ If it’s raining, have a movie day. Rent a couple of good children’s movies, make some popcorn and snuggle together with blankets.

Around Richmond

❚ If you need to get out of the house, head to Minoru Arenas, 7551 Minoru Gate now through to Jan. 3 to experience Winter Wonderland. One of the rinks has been festooned with lights, snow banks and trees. Bring your family and enjoy an old fashioned skate on what looks like an outdoor pond. For more information, as well as times, visit www.

CHUNG CHOW/RICHMOND NEWS

A little bit of the outdoors has been recreated inside the Minoru Arena for Winter Wonderland, on until Jan. 3

richmond.ca/arenas or call 604718-8465. ❚ Take a walk in the bog at Richmond Nature Park, 11851 Westminster Hwy. Sun, Dec. 26 where nature walks will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Join the staff for an introduction to the bog (the lungs of the planet) and they will show you the wonder of this special place. No registration required. After the walk, visit the Nature House’s live animals, from 3-3:30 p.m. These creatures are ambassadors to the wildlife community of the bog. This is free and for all ages. ❚ Go bowling at the Zone Bowling Centre, 150-14200 Entertainment Blvd. The Zone is open daily from 9 a.m. to midnight throughout the holidays except Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Christmas Day, Dec. 25 from 2 to 10 p.m. Call 604-271-2695 or

visit www.zbowl.com ❚ Grab your bathing suit and goggles and head to Watermania, 14300 Entertainment Blvd. Watermania has two water slides, two large whirlpools and a wave pool with interactive water play features. It’s open everyday except for Christmas Day and Boxing Day. For information, call 604448-5353 or visit www.richmond. ca/parksrec/poos/watermainia. htm.

Further afield

❚ Head into downtown Vancouver for a free outdoor skate at the Robson Square Ice Rink. The domed rink is open every day until Feb. 28, weather permitting. Hours of operation are between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and on Fridays and Saturdays the rink is open until 11 p.m. While you are downtown,

enjoy all the sights and sounds of the city. (Skate and helmet rentals are free for children 12 and under). ❚ Go window-shopping for nostalgic Christmas displays. The animated window displays from the old Woodward’s store downtown will be in six locations this year: Woodward’s building at Hastings and Abbott, Bentall One at Burrard and Pender, Bentall Three at Burrard and Dunsmuir, BC Ferries at Burrard and Cordova and the Vancouver Christmas Market at Cambie and Georgia. There is also a Walking Tour to visit all six grand displays, which harken back to days gone by. Get bundled up, grab a warm eggnog, hot chocolate or coffee for the parents and enjoy. For a look at the walking tour map, visit: www.christmas.canadaplace.ca/ woodwards_windows.

You may not know Jay Chou, but in Asian circles he is a superstar. The Chinese singing sensation is often referred to as the “Asian” Michael Jackson. While Chou is in Richmond, the people responsible for keeping his swooning female fans at a safe distance is Michael Lok and 100 of his past and present students from Lok’s Hapkido School. Last night, Chou was in town for his Vancouver Rogers Arena concert, part of his North American tour. When big name Asian stars come into town, Richmond’s Lok’s Hapkido School students often provide some of the personal security. “You may not know Jay now, but come Jan. 14 when the Green Hornet opens, people will definitely know him,” said Lok. The movie stars Seth Rogen, Cameron Diaz and Chou as Kato, the Hornet’s sidekick. The part was originally brought to life by Bruce Lee in the ’60s hit television series by the same name. For more than a decade now, Lok has been providing concert security for top Chinese performers. “Our focus is the safety and well-being of usually one or two subjects only,” added Lok. “It gives my students a real-life scenario to offer

our service, and the students are excited to meet popular artists from overseas.” Lok and his students often supply security detail to and from the airport, as well as to and from the hotel and any other activity a star wishes to do. “If they want to go shopping or out for dinner, we tag along,” added Lok. For Chou, Lok was asked to make available 100 personnel for five days of round-the-clock surveillance. “That is not uncommon, many stars ask for the same,” said Lok. Lok comes armed with a number of credentials, including Korean certified master instructor belt 7th Dan certification (the highest rank in Canada) and 1985 Canadian Heavy Weight Sparring champion. Lok is also licensed as a security guard by the B.C. Justice Institute. “Military security guards in Korea are trained in Hapkido,” he added. Hapkido is a Korean martial art, and combines techniques from karate, aikido and judo. Everyone involved in the security detail, including volunteers and paid staff, are insured and bonded. In the end, Lok said in all the years he has been offering security detail, never has there been an issue of danger to either superstar or fans. “The artists I protect are greeted with love and happiness from their fans, they don’t pose a threat to the society.”

DISABILITIES

Guide dog opens a new world for blind man Christmas came early this year for Mark Hicks, after he was presented with a new “pair of beautiful brown eyes.” After years of finding his way around town with the help of a white cane, Hicks now has new “eyes” to help him in the shape of his very first guide dog. Hicks is now the owner of a yellow Labrador retriever named Leamy, given to him by BC Guide Dog Services of Ladner. “Liberating,” was the first word Hicks’ said when asked what it’s like for him to have a guide dog. He’s been blind for nearly 10 years, a too-common outcome for people who have juvenile diabetes. “Now Leamy and I walk so fast I can feel the breeze on my face again, and I feel wonderful! I feel empowered,” Hicks said. “I no longer have to struggle to get groceries, or wait for someone to drive me for a haircut. “Leamy and I can just go, whenever and wherever we want to!” Hicks, of Richmond, was diagnosed when he was three, and in his mid20s he began to notice spots before his eyes. Total blindness set in over

the next two years, and Hicks’ world became a lot smaller as it got darker. A ramp manager for Purolator at Vancouver International Airport, Hicks’ declining eyesight made being on the tarmac with moving planes much too dangerous for him, so he transferred indoors to the human resources department. Eventually, his blindness made office work too hard to do, too, and Hicks went on a disability pension. He trained hard to become skilled at using his cane and was proud of his achievement. Still, just getting to the local pharmacy for his medicine was slow going, sometimes even painful. If a car was parked across a sidewalk, for instance, he wouldn’t know it was there until he crashed into it. The effect Leamy has on Hicks’s outlook is so profound that he’s beginning to think about new possibilities that once seemed out of reach. “We can travel anywhere in the Lower Mainland that TransLink will take us,” he said. “And I’m starting to dream about some of the things Leamy and I can do together now, things that were too scary to tackle before.” Hicks explained that, even on familiar routes, his cane wasn’t very good at telling him in which direction

he was going, where the button for the elevator was, or if there was ice on the ground in front of him. Leamy does all of this and Hicks wonders if he could go back to college next year, or maybe even move out on his own in a few months, once he and Leamy have more experience together. Hicks’s wait to get Leamy was a nail-biting two years, a typical wait time for many people on BC Guide Dog Service’s list; some have to wait even longer for a good match. Making a good match for energy and temperament (even walking gait matters) is critical to the success of the team, who will work together for up to eight years. It takes nearly two years to train a guide or autism support dog, and the course is challenging: nearly 40 per cent of the dogs do not complete the training. Moreover, the full program, from planning the breeding right through to aftercare for teams, costs about $37,000. The funds are raised completely through donations and grants, and the recipients are only charged a symbolic $1 for their dog. If you would like to help, BC Guide Dog Services, visit www.bcguidedog. com for more information.

Recycle your Styrofoam

12034957

Over the Christmas holidays, the City of Richmond is asking people to remember changes to the garbage, blue box and green can collection, as well as special Styrofoam and tree disposals. Garbage, blue box and green can collection for single-family dwellings will be collected one day later in Richmond for the week of Dec. 27 to 31, due to the Christmas statutory holidays, and Jan. 3 and 7 due to New Year’s holidays. Regular collection will resume the week of Jan. 10. For more information and the 2011 collection schedule, visit www.richmond.ca (City Services > Recycling & Garbage > Collection Schedule). There is a short-term collection event at the recycling depot for moulded packing Styrofoam from Dec. 29 to Jan. 9. The depot is closed on Mondays, Tuesdays, Dec. 25, 26 and Jan. 1. The Styrofoam will be reused for insulation or landscaping material. In order to reuse Styrofoam, it must be clean and in good condition, with no tape, paper, paint, or any other foreign objects attached. Styrofoam chips will not be accepted. The city is asking people not to put Styrofoam in your blue box or cart, as it is not recyclable.

Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. This annual fundraising initiative is sponsored by Richmond Firefighters’ Society, City of Richmond, Richmond Fire-Rescue, Fraser Richmond Soil and Fibre and Steveston Harbour Authority. Every penny donated will go to Richmond Firefighters’ Society’s charities. Residents of single-family dwellings can leave their Christmas tree at the curbside for collection on their garbage and recycling collection day. However, the city asks that you cut and bundle the tree into the three-foot by two-foot size limit.

Pioneer geeks fondly remembered

Who were Richmond’s industrial pioneers? Were they the “geeks” of yesterday upon which today’s high-tech industry is built? The Cutting Edge: A History of Technology and Richmond, a new exhibition about Richmond’s hi-tech companies and the industrial pioneers who have led them, opened earlier this month and will run at the Richmond Museum at the Richmond Cultural Centre until June next year. Featured in the exhibit is an array of objects on loan from some of Richmond’s most notable high-tech companies. From satellite dishes, to a WWII aircraft engine and automated YVR kiosk, there is

All of us wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a healthy, happy new year.

Frances Clark says the city will benefit from the initiative to set a global standard for disabled accessibility.

❚ Assist with collection of baseline data; ❚ Co-ordinate input, marketing and messaging to partner organizations; ❚ Assist with the funding and recruitment of an accessibility analyst to be based at RCD; ❚ Roll out project outcomes to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities; ❚ Put up $13,000 towards the initiative. “The (GAI), if successful, will empower people living with disabilities in Richmond to make informed decisions and leverage in their consumer power to help increase accessibility,” wrote the city’s cultural diversity coordinator, Alan Hill, in his report to council. “This initiative will also inform businesses, providing them with the information and tools to become more accessible and increase their understanding of the economic benefits of accessible venues … ” Hill also warned of the city’s ageing population, which will need, in years to come, more accessibility to a whole range of facilities and services. Clark certainly seems to think Richmond being one of the first to jump on GAI bandwagon will have a positive impact on the city. “The fact that we’re keeping the focus on Richmond will create greater pride and will encourage people to do better. That will have an indirect benefit on accessibility,” she said. “I think we have recognized that people with disabilities have dollars to spend as well and that’s why there are conferences and different events getting hosted here.”

Richmond can only benefit from being a global leader in a new Rick Hansen Foundation initiative. That’s the view of the Richmond’s most vocal disability advocate Frances Clark after city council endorsed the foundation’s plan for a global five-star accessibility rating. “The idea that Rick (Hansen) has is to have a global system whereby the standards (of accessibility for disabled people in a city) are accessible online and can be viewed in a way that everyone understands,” said Clark, Richmond Centre for Disability (RCD) secretary and founder. “The hotel industry has a great star system and people with disabilities know what to expect before they book up. It’s a good clean system.” Clark, who says the best disabled access she’s experienced thus far is in Las Vegas, said she thinks Richmond would get a three or four-star stamp if the foundation rated her city today. “I think we’d rate very well, not quite as well as Vegas, as I don’t think our hotels offer quite the same amenities as Vegas,” she said. “But we do host many events here in Richmond for people with disabilities, so that must tell you something about what we have here. “The sidewalks, curb access, ramps and access to public buildings in Richmond are all of a pretty good standard and that goes a long way to making us appealing. Steveston is very accessible as well down at the harbour and not all harbours have that.” The City of Richmond now looks set to become one of the foundation’s early bird partners in pioneering the rating system as part of the Global Accessibility Initiative (GAI). As such, the city would: ❚ Assist with testing and evaluating the project’s assessment tool;

Help is around the corner

F

or most people, Christmas is a frantic time. Time to shop for friends and family, then hunt for deals on Boxing Day. Time to hit the grocery store, maybe the liquor store, to get the ingredients for that perfect holiday feast. For others, unfortunately, it’s time to take advantage of the massive holiday shopping spree. Police everywhere are issuing their usual holiday warnings: lock your car, keep presents in the trunk, watch out for suspicious characters. No matter how careful everyone is, of course, someone’s Christmas memories will be tainted. They’ll remember the broken window, the missing presents, the ransacked car, the police report. We could rant and condemn thieves who cause such pain. But in the spirit of the season, instead we’ll ask them to make a change. No one grows up thinking they’ll spend the holiday season breaking and entering, trading stolen goods for a few dollars or a quick fix. It’s a demeaning, miserable existence, the result of very bad choices, some they made for themselves and some made for them, often at a young age. The good news is that, at this time of year, people are more willing than ever to help when a life needs to be turned around. Our communities are filled with organizations that reach out a helping hand, from government agencies to nonprofits like the Salvation Army’s shelters, to local churches, to food banks. Even the RCMP can help point someone in need of a new direction towards help. Lives have momentum, and turning one fuelled by drugs and crime must feel like trying to turn an ocean liner with a canoe paddle. But others have done it. There are those who know how to chart the course, how to steer through the sharp rocks. This Christmas, if you need help, please ask. If you are asked for help, please give. — Langley Advance editorial

CHOICE WORDS

Enough of happy holidays

The Editor, Enough already of Happy Holidays! I have had it with the “holiday cards,” “holiday concerts,” “holiday parties,” etc. What’s next? Holiday cake and holiday carols? Why are we so afraid to use the “C” word (Christmas)? We can call Hanukkah and Diwali by their names and no one is offended and nobody objects. So why can’t we call Christmas, Christmas? Are we somehow ashamed to be Christian? Shame on us! It is interesting to note that it is mostly the Chinese businesses and malls (such as Aberdeen Centre) that have no problem wishing us a Merry Christmas in their ads, so obviously the Chinese community doesn’t have an issue with Christmas and is not offended by it. Have any of us actually asked those of other religious persuasions if they are offended by Christmas or object to it being referred to as such? I believe this weak-kneed, ambiguous and saccharin “Happy Holidays” is of our own making, for some unfounded reason, and needs to be dumped forthwith. Merry Christmas, everyone! Here is what I wish 2011 to bring Well, it’s the holidays again. Another year gone, a new one about to begin. In the public dreams and wishes category, here are my hopes for this holiday season and the New Year. Here’s one wish that I know will come true: I hope for a new premier for B.C. We know Gordon Campbell is leaving, but who will fill his shoes? Not only will the Liberals have a new leader, but the NPD will have someone new at the helm as well. By this time next year, the political landscape in British Columbia will likely be very different than what it is today, especially since there is the possibility that legislation will be changed to hold an election to give the new premier a mandate from the voters. It’s anyone’s guess who will be leading this province next year, and change keeps things interesting. I hope for a quieter year on Lower Mainland streets: we appear to be in the midst of another gang war and it’s heating up. After a west side shooting injured 10 people, the police are ramping up their anti-gang efforts, but it still feels like a bit of a risk to be on Vancouver streets after dark.

Tracy Sherlock ELEMENTARY, MY DEAR

Let’s hope things settle down in 2011. Somewhat selfishly, I hope for a good year for newspapers. They’ve been kicked around a bit lately, and they deserve a bit of a breather. The Internet and the economy have dealt dual blows to this business and while the Internet adds a dynamic new dimension to journalism, it also lures many of newspapers traditional advertisers away. To quote social media commentator Clay Shirky, newspapers produce 85 per cent of news stories and do much of media’s “heavy lifting” covering beats and breaking stories, which other media then use as the basis for their newscasts and commentary. Newspapers play a significant role in keeping Canada’s democracy healthy; for that reason alone I hope 2011 is good to newspapers. As we move into the long stretch between New Year’s Day and Easter, I will reiterate my wish for a holiday in February. Alberta, Saskatchewan and

Ontario have a holiday in February, and I think British Columbia needs a mid-winter holiday as well. In 2011, Easter’s not until April 24, so it’s nearly four months between long weekends. Ouch. This year was a pretty amazing year for health discoveries: targeted cancer treatments, MS liberation treatment and face transplants revolutionize medicine. I wish for a cure for cancer for 2011, although I know it’s a tall order. Nonetheless, I’m quite confident that researchers will move closer to a cure in 2011 than ever before, and it couldn’t come a moment too soon. I would wish for peace on Earth, but I know it’s a pipe dream. I would, however, like to see a year in which war does not play a significant role. I know we’re still committed to Afghanistan, but I hope we begin to see some progress towards a peaceful, stable future in this troubled land. Further, I hope it’s a year without any terrorist acts or the breakout of a new war. All the best to you and yours for the holidays and 2011. accepting electronic payment is sufficiently computerized to adjust their systems so that when the customer indicates they are using cash, it would be input just as either credit or debit is currently identified and the rounding applied at that time. Of course, should all levels of government drop all sales taxes and levies so there are not longer the cent here and their addons, prices could be set to a five cent scheme and rounding would not be an issue. Ferry boss escapes supposed ‘tough times’

The Editor, They’re obviously not “challenging” times for everyone. It’s time for the taxpayers of B.C. to wake up and hold their provincial MLAs accountable for what’s happening at BC Ferries Corporation. David Hahn came to BC Ferries in 2003, but as B.C. taxpayers (that actually pay his salary) we had no right to know how much we paid him. Only recent changes to the free-

dom-of-information laws finally gave us that right. We first learned Mr Hahn’s base salary was $494,923 in 2009. In 2010, his base salary rose to $519,231. Factoring in bonuses and incentives, his salary was pushed over $1 million. They’re obviously not “challenging” times for everyone. Nancy M Forhan Richmond

15 easy steps to managing, reducing stress CAREGIVER CORNER

Whether you are a caregiver or not, we all live with stress. Sometimes stress is stress and sometimes it is not so good. Good stress might be exercising, challenging ourselves intellectually, or having a good laugh. The notso-good stress can affect our physical and mental health. We can reduce the stress we have by using a variety of strategies and lifestyle changes.

As you read through the list pick out one or two that appeal to you as a starting point. 1. Read and journal. We often tell our clients to make a small project out of stress. The pay off is amazing. Read about stress. Keep a journal of your feelings. This helps create an awareness in you. Only takes 15 minutes a day. 2. Prioritize tasks. Do the “must dos” first. 3. Stop. Make a “stop doing”

list. 4. Slow down. Use relaxation techniques that work for you: yoga, meditation, massage, deep breathing (it’s free), soothing music, and the best one of all is to linger in a bathtub of bubbles. 5. Eat nutritious food: lots of veggies and fruit — you know the drill. 6. Get enough rest. 7. Talk about what is bothering you — with friends, professionals, relatives, support groups. Spread around your burdens so you don’t burn out your friends, and remember to share some cheer too. 8. Take one day at a time. 9. List some activities that will bring you some joy and

make a date to do them. 10. “Just do it.” Physical exercise is the best thing you can do for yourself, for your health. 11. Set realistic goals. No one expects you to be perfect except you. 12. Get respite. Ask for relief from caregiving tasks from professionals, relatives, friends or volunteers. 13. Make a list. When someone offers help, be prepared with a list and take them up on it: “Could you have tea with Joe while I go for a pedicure,” “Could you phone my mom Monday evenings for 15 minutes while I’m out playing bridge.” 14. Schedule. When people want to visit over the holi-

Immigration Consulting Dr. Richard Chau, DMD, MD, FRCD(C) Certified Specialist in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

days, let them know the best times for you and the person in your care. Also schedule time for you to attend to your health needs and visits. 15. Count your blessings. Take a few moments to make a list of things for which you are thankful. This holiday season the very best gift for a caregiver is to care as much for yourself as you care for others. When you do you will have made a break through. Meet you at the “corner” next time and Happy New Year!

The perfect commuter car TOYOTA

The 2011 Toyota Yaris is nimble, thrifty and the price is right

It can be tough at the top. Not too long after Toyota was declared the biggest car company in the world, the global car market went in the dumper. In recent months and closer to home, Toyota, the darling of every auto consumer reliability and quality survey, has been hit with a barrage of safety recalls and grilled by governments for its conduct. If this has rocked the trust that the Canadian consumer has in the Toyota brand, so far it hasn’t shown up in the most accurate of all quality measurements— resale value. In the most recent Canadian Black Book annual Retained Value Awards, Toyota and Lexus models took top spot in seven of seventeen categories. The winner in the subcompact segment, the Toyota Yaris, is the focus of this review. Yaris is also the lowest-priced new Toyota that you can buy and has a start price of just $13,995 for a three-door hatchback version call the Yaris CE. Moving up the model line, there’s a five-door hatchback version of Yaris that comes in both LE and RS trim levels and has a start price of $14,905. In addition, there’s also a fourdoor sedan edition of the Yaris with a start price of $14,990. My test Yaris was a fourdoor sedan with an automatic transmission ($1,000) and it also came with a Convenience Package ($1,600) that includes air conditioning, power windows, power mirrors, power door locks, keyless entry and bunch of other stuff. It also bumped the full price to $17,350. Something to keep in mind before you get carried away with Yaris options is

The Looks

A stretched body with a trunk gives the Yaris sedan a more conservative look than the Yaris hatchback. The sedan is significantly longer, by 475 mm (18.7 inches), its wheelbase is also longer (by 90 mm) and it’s a little lower (65 mm). Although they look the same from a front view, the overall design doesn’t have the same perkiness as the hatchback and the longer wheelbase also gives it a wider turn circle. Of course it has redeeming qualities on the inside; more passenger and cargo space.

The Inside

The stretched outer dimensions of the sedan give its rear-seat occupants considerably more leg room. While there’s a little less headroom, most users won’t even notice a difference, as the well-designed passenger cabin still has a roomy feel. The driver seating position is upright and the centre-dash position instrument panel allows better forward sightlines, especially for parking. While there’s sound design and economic see Safety page 20

Special to the News

that its larger sibling the Toyota Corolla has a start price of just $15,460. Then again, while the Corolla offers more ‘car’ for the money, perhaps you want less ‘car’ and the best possible fuel economy. And when it comes to fuel economy Yaris is best of the best, as it’s in a class full of super fuel misers. A combined city/highway fuel efficiency rating of just 6.3L/100 km for a Yaris with a manual transmission and 6.3L/100 km with an automatic has allowed it claim the federal ecoENERGY award in the subcompact class for five years straight.

Continued from page 17 logic behind the unique instrument panel placement, the traditional location in front of the driver is still my preferred position. The steering wheel had a tilt adjustment but no telescopic feature. On both ends of the dash were handy built-in cup holders that tumbled out when needed. Console storage bins on either side of the centre stack are another clever, user-friendly idea.

It also comes with a Brake Assist system on RS. On the passive-protection side, front seat-mounted side airbags and side curtain airbags (front and rear) are an option and standard on RS. not a Yaris strong point. It’s especially noticeable at higher speeds, but it depends on the road surface . . . and audio volume. The four-speed automatic in my test Yaris worked well. It came with a gated lever that could also be shifted through its gears manually, but it’s more likely to used by drivers in

engine braking or passing situations.

The Score

The Toyota Yaris is an inexpensive car to buy, it’s cheap to run, super reliable, nimble to drive, easy to park and it’s likely to have a high resale value if you ever want to sell it ... a perfect commuter car!

The ladies of the Textiles Arts Guild of Richmond were busily working away, as they do quite often, at the Richmond Cultural Centre. Freda Hopper is holding up one of the many baby quilts the ladies create for various non-profits in our community. The Rotary Hospice House recently nominated this hard-working group of volunteers Volunteer Group of the Year.

The scarves were handed to the Salvation Army’s Capt. Mary Smith.

On a cold Sunday afternoon, the Association of South Asian Professionals of British Columbia held their second Blankets for the Homeless Event at Oppenheimer Park in Vancouver. Fifteen members and their families, including Richmond’s Harvey Kooner, took part in distributing 400 blankets and dozens of pillows to the less fortunate. By raising awareness, ASAP hopes others will join in to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the approximately 2,300 homeless people in Vancouver.

Elizabeth Specht of Volunteer Richmond and Mike McCoy of Touchstone were two of more than 150 guests who attended the Giving the Gift of Christmas event at the River Green Story Centre. The event raised $18,000 for the Richmond Christmas Fund. The fund brightens the holidays for many less fortunate families by providing food and gifts.

Steveston-London secondary students spent two weeks competing in an in-school food drive rivalry, pitting class against class for a good cause. Some classes even canvassed the surrounding neighbourhoods for extra donations. In the end, the students raised $1,000 and an entire busload full of food. The Richmond Food Bank Society, which helps people such as low income earners, those who have been laid off work, or people with chronic illness and disabilities and living on a fixed income, came to pick up the donations. Suffice to say, they were very impressed. The winning class received a pizza lunch for collecting more than 1,000 points worth of food and money.

In November, Gudrun Fromagerie in Steveston celebrated its second anniversary. Gudrun owner Patrick Tubajon and fellow Steveston business owners Nicola Gillam of Violet Hill and Angela Reddy of Lacquer Beauty Bar enjoyed the party with about 50 other revelers. There were free appetizers and drinks as well as a birthday cake.

Travel BELIZE

Paddle your way through paradise Kayaking to Great Blue Hole, a perfectly circular sink hole, is one of many wonders in this tiny nation BY J IM COCHRANE Postmedia News

Hanging upside down in our overturned sea kayak, we were desperately trying to remember our guide’s recent instructions — “Pull the ‘Oh s-t’ tab and if you can’t find it, punch out your spray skirt with your knees.” This was the part that I secretly feared when my wife, Kathryn, and I planned our trip to Belize. It was clear from the information on the Island Expeditions website that we would be tipping our kayaks, escaping and eventually getting back in as part of our trip, but being in my 70s, sporting a hip replacement and having never kayaked before, I was a bit apprehensive. But, under the watchful eyes of the staff, we were successful in righting our kayak and climbing safely back in. Whew. This was the second part of a trip that we had booked with Island Expeditions in March of this year. For the first leg we spent three days at Birds Eye View Lodge, located on the shores of the Crooked Tree Lagoon in Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary in northern Belize. From our balcony the lagoon looked to

be blanketed with thousands of birds. And a trip on the water in a small boat brought us within camera range of many varieties of birds. The Jabiru stork is just one of over 250 resident and migrating bird species commonly seen around the lodge. We saw 27 varieties in two days there. This is truly a birdwatcher’s paradise, with birders from all over the world coming to Crooked Tree nature reserve. The next day we boated 20 km upriver to the Lamanai Mayan site, spotting lots of birds and animals along the way. Our outstanding guides were able to spot some tiny creatures such as a Jesus Christ lizard (they run across the top of the water) to turtles, crocodiles and many birds as we cruised along at about 35 km/h. Also along the river were locals fishing from everything from outboard powered craft to dugout canoes. There are 21 Mayan sites throughout Belize, and one of our day trips was a visit to the Altun Ha ruins. This is where the famous Jade Head — “the Jewel of Belize” — was found in 1968 by David Pendergast of the Royal Ontario Museum. The head, 14.9 cm high and weighing 4.42 kg, was kept for several years in Ontario, but has been back in Belize for some time, and

Snorkelling: Discover fish, corals and conches Continued from page 26 We spent a week on Lighthouse reef, living in standup tents with wooden floors, a coal oil lamp, and a regular bed. The accommodations were basic — an outdoor toilet, sun-heated water for showers — but comfortable, with minimal effect on the environment. Island Expeditions has an arrangement with the Belize Audubon Society, which is in charge of the 2.6-sq.-km. area on and around the Caye. The highlight is the red-footed booby and magnificent frigate bird nesting areas, the reason for establishing the nature reserve in the first place. Dive boats come ashore on the opposite side of the island to our camp, register with the Audubon Society to go to the Great Blue Hole, a large underwater sinkhole, have lunch on the beach and head to the nesting viewing stand. There were 10 travellers in our group: two other Canadian couples and four American ladies. We were the oldest, but we soon became friends with our fel-

low adventurers. The staff were very knowledgeable and personable local Belizeans with one New Zealander, team leader Jamie Sharp, who has been working from Canada for about seven years. On our second day of this leg of the trip, the whole group kayaked over 11 km to the Great Blue Hole. After a kilometre and a half, Kathryn and I lagged behind the group, so one of the staff in an accompanying motor boat picked up our rope and towed us to the front of the gang, as they did for some of the others as well. The Great Blue Hole, a heritage site made famous by marine scientist Jacques Cousteau, is a perfectly circular limestone sinkhole about 145 metres deep. It is surrounded by a reef, which we snorkelled around. This is a popular spot for recreational scuba divers, who go down to see remaining stalactites and stalagmites. But some of them reported that it is quite dark and there was not much else to see. Our group snorkelled around the surrounding reefs

On our way back from this outing, our kayaks were outfitted with sails. The sailing was a little tricky at first, but much easier than having to paddle the whole distance back. We snorkelled every day at various places, sometimes right off shore at Half Moon Caye where there were many very colourful corals, sponges, conch and fish, and we preferred snorkelling over the shallower reefs that gave

us a closer view of them all. With staff also in the water and in a nearby boat, we felt very comfortable. One day, several of us went fishing, and although I took my own little spinning rod along, I soon switched to the “native” way of towing a hand line wound around a piece of cork and baited with smaller fish, conch and shrimp. Although I was unlucky, our group did catch quite a few barracuda, which were delicious, and several other

large fish, including an 11kg grouper and a very large tarpon, which was thrown back “because they are too bony.” The fish were cooked by the chef, who had previously worked with a cruise line. It was a little embarrassing to be beaten by the four American ladies in our group, who outfished me. They were quite happy to joke that they were just getting even for our Olympic hockey teams’ victories over their squads.

We booked the Island Expeditions tours through AMA Travel, flying with Continental Airlines first to Houston, Texas, and then on to Belize City. Air Canada also flies to Houston. Some people we met in Belize told us it was much cheaper to fly to Cancun, Mexico, and then take the bus to Belize. Others rented a car in Cancun and then drove to Belize. Island Expeditions, a Vancouver-based company that markets and operates Belize Vacations and Mexico Vacations in Central America, is in its third decade of leading adventure trips in Belize. This camp runs from November to the end of May. We also know that a great adventure is created from having first-class equipment, delicious meals and small groups, and you can be confident that your participation in an IEC trip generates funds to protect the wild places we depend on. Sports Canadians off to Calgary for Mac’s tournament

The Greater Vancouver Canadians head for Calgary on Christmas Day with some much-needed momentum after feasting on the last place team in the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League. The Canadians rolled to 10-2 and 9-4 victories over the Thompson Blazers in Chase last weekend — marking the first time since the end of October they had managed to sweep a weekend series. Now they will look for more success in what will be a much stiffer challenge at the 33rd annual Mac’s Tournament which gets underway on Boxing Day. Greater Vancouver will open play against the Tisdale Trojans. Its round-robin schedule is highlighted with a game against former champion Russia Severstal on Dec. 28. The Calgary Royals and Leduc Oil Kings round out the schedule. The top eight teams will advance to the quarter-finals, with the championship game slated for the Scotia Bank Saddledome on New Year’s Day. The wins over the Blazers saw Brodyn Nielsen and Richmond’s Carter Popoff each net hat tricks in game one. Taylor Foote, Robert Johnson, Bruce Eviston and Arwin Atwal also scored. Trevor Lima chipped in with four assists, while Jeremy Gossard and Macoy Erkamps each had a pair of helpers. Nolan Kinney paced the attack in game two with three goals. Malcolm Glaholt and Gossard added a pair and one assist each. Jason Fram and Popoff rounded out the scoring as the Canadians opened up a 5-0 lead after 20 minutes and cruised to victory. The Canadians will begin the new year in third place (16-6-4), five points back of the front-running Vancouver NW Giants.

Skating club looking for online votes in national contest The Connaught Skating Club needs your help to potentially win a national contest. The Richmond-based club has entered the “Show it Off for Skate Canada” contest. It is one of over 50 submissions vying for the chance to win a one-day seminar with skating legend Kurt Browning. Skate Canada asked member clubs and schools to use photos and video to demon-

strate how they have embraced and showcased the new Skate Canada logo, which was unveiled in June. Second prize is to have a national team athlete skate at a club’s year end carnival, a Sony HD Rink Side Video Pack and Skate Canada gifts cards. A jury of judges, appointed by Skate Canada, will select the grand prize winning club based on a pre-determined set of

qualifications, including impact, innovation and impressions. The jury will also select the winning club for the national team appearance. The jury is made up of Skate Canada CEO William Thompson, Skate Canada President Benoît Lavoie and World Champion Jeff Buttle. The Sony HD Rinkside Video Pack prize will be awarded to the entry that

receives the most votes and is the ultimate fan favourite. Ten Skate Canada gift cards worth $250 each will be awarded by random draw. Only Skate Canada member clubs and school could enter the contest but voting is opening to everyone. To view and vote for Connaught’s entry visit: www.showitoffforskatecanada.ca/gallery.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Be ambitious – show talents, display support for others, work hard, protect projects, but launch new ideas, ventures Thursday onward, not before. Sunday will be chore-filled. Relationships loom in importance Monday/Tuesday, but friction is more prevalent than harmony. Realize this is not your decade to win wars – battles maybe, not wars. (On the other hand, you can hop on an elevator of accomplishment if you co-operate.) Deep changes, finances, intimacy and health factors head for a successful conclusion Wednesday to Friday. Delays end! Saturday’s gentle, happy and wise! Taurus April 20-May 20: Wider understanding, compassion, love, far travel, legal matters, advertising, statistics, insurance, religion, concepts, higher education – these come to the fore. Life feels more serene. Still, there are numerous problems Sunday to Wednesday morning – in these very areas. These are complex, subtle problems, in which solutions and causes seem to mingle. Your best approach, unless you have a clear idea, is to sit and wait it out. Recent delays end by Thursday, so you can march forth in relationships, love, negotiations and contracts this day forward. Friday morning’s lucky for these! Gemini May 21-June 20: Mysteries, secrets, psychological depths, intimacy, sexual yearnings, subconscious promptings, large finances, investments and debt, lifestyle changes and commitments – these fill your days over the weeks ahead. Don’t start anything (especially in these areas) before Thursday. You would get caught in an eternal circling around a problem. But Thursday onward promises success. (However, realize this is not a big investment year, with the exception of investment in your own career/ business.) Health matters are significant for several weeks. Enlist a doctor, if needed. Relationships please Saturday.

Cancer June 21-July 22: The accent lies on relationships, agreements, negotiations, relocation, opportunities, dealings with the public, and love. This area has become the prime one of your life, and will remain so to at least 2024. You’ve already discovered that others are more stubborn, yet more attractive than they were last decade, and that you must change to accommodate them. Another hint of this arrives Sunday. The choice is love or alienation: nothing in-between. Arguments might arise to midweek (Wednesday). Be diplomatic! Romance, exciting meetings arise Wednesday to Friday. Woo someone! Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Start no important projects, buy nothing significant, before Dec. 30. An old flame might appear this week or next, but it’s almost too late, sort of “life’s afterthought.” Your home continues to be sweet, affectionate. The end of this month and early January will favour re-decorating or purchasing property. “Vaguely” schedule that now, put aside the time. Happiness and social delights visit Sunday/ Monday. You might receive a loving message. A prospective relationship offers good romance, bad marriage. Leave commitment decisions for 2011. A month of work and health issues begins Tuesday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Sweet love and a winning streak fill the weeks ahead! If single, you’ll definitely be attracted to someone. An “instant wedding” could occur. However, realize two things: one, anyone first met (or affair begun) Sunday through Wednesday will always contain jealousy or resentment; and two, in general, loves begun between 2004 and next March (2011) will tend toward unpredictable surprises and sudden changes. Take care with money Monday/ Tuesday. Friends, travel and communications veer toward success Thursday/Friday. Home, family, or an intimate crowd please you most Friday eve, Saturday.

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Delays end Thursday. Don’t start anything before then. This week and the next few nudge you into domestic surroundings and a restful stance. Various problems arise Sunday to Wednesday. You might decide to end a relationship. This is complex, with pluses and minuses. If you feel a calm, quiet disappointment about this situation, that’s your answer. Sunday provides one more clue that this decade focuses on a deep, major change of home. That might be a change of address, or other change. It’s necessary, so flow with it. Chase money Thursday through Friday morning: your luck’s high! Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Don’t start any projects or relationships before Thursday. Communications, travel, casual friendships, paperwork and details fill this week and the next few – they will transform this entire decade. Shorter-term, problems and flaws become apparent in these Sunday to Wednesday, connected to work issues or more private, secret shortcomings. Well, work with a good heart. By Wednesday p.m. your energy and charisma rise, and you’re headed toward success, harmony, even love, by Friday daytime! Friday night and Saturday are easy, sensual, good for spending and wooing (not necessarily linked). Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: The weeks ahead feature money, earnings, spending, selling, possessions and rote learning. A major change rolls slowly through this zone all this decade and half of next. You can build a castle of money! Sunday holds a clue, probably involving your career, ambitions or status. You’re happy Monday to Wednesday, but you face problems and barriers in money and social wishes: be patient. Though you’re tired Thursday/Friday, luck accompanies government or school applications, spiritual and charity efforts. Your energy and charisma rise in time for a New Year’s party! Recent delays end.

Dec. 26 - Jan. 1 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Your energy, charisma and confidence surge – for a few weeks. But don’t start anything before Thursday. Until then, handle two concerns: one, you must decide between ending or investing further (more time/effort) in a particular ambition or career direction. If you can’t decide, wait until Thursday/Friday, when you’ll get a lucky glimpse of your future, and how to get there. The second concern is more important, and centres on Sunday: your entire “self” is changing: what you want, and want to be. Think this through Sunday, ponder, take your thoughts seriously. All is good! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Continue to lie low, rest and contemplate for the few weeks ahead. You’ll deal with government agencies, institutions or charitable agencies. Be spiritual. Plan for the future – but don’t make any plans before Thursday. Sunday to Wednesday contains a few subtle hints that your inner world needs transformation. Perhaps your inner anger doesn’t “fit” your larger sense of right and wrong. What’s out of kilter? Be ambitious Thursday through Friday morning – your efforts could end with a stroke of luck! Your social side and optimism emerge just in time for New Years! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Wishes come true, flirtations invite you and your popularity rises – this week and the next couple. Plans and optimism hover around money and possessions. However, proceed cautiously before Thursday – start nothing, not even a relationship. And realize your hopes and your “net worth” are not in agreement – and “net worth” has the final say. Your hopes need a revision, as Sunday will show (subtly or not). When your view turns unselfish, turns to wider topics such as real love, true luck and success enter – Thursday into Friday morning. Saturday’s ambition is achievable! timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
