Year-old flame still burns bright Memories of torch reignited BY A LAN CAMPBELL

Chinese contribution ignored: Society Asians’ role in history should be better recognized in curriculum — trustee BY A LAN CAMPBELL
acampbell@richmond-news.com
The Chinese contribution to the building of B.C. should be properly recognized in the education system. That’s the view of the Canadians for Reconciliation Society, which hosted a press conference in Richmond yesterday (Thursday) to highlight what it brands a “vacuum” in B.C. history. The society — which chose Richmond for the event due to its high Chinese population — is sending to each of the $

provincial NDP and Liberal party leadership candidates a document to sign and pledge to affect more acknowledgement of Chinese history, should they win their respective races. Richmond school trustee Chak Au is one of the society’s supporters who believes, B.C. schools could be doing more to include what the Chinese and other minority groups have done for the province. “It’s always good for students to have a deeper understanding of the history and the contributions made by the different groups,” said Au.
“I really think it’s better for fostering a mutual respect and I’d like to see more programs in the curriculum in recognition of what these groups contributed to the country and province. “This is all from a perspective of Canadian history, as our nation was built by different groups at different times and is still being developed.” Au added that he thinks, “It’s good for students to understand this process and therefore make our society more inclusive.” “It would be great to see (the leadership candidates) taking a stand on this,” he said.

Bill Chu, chair of the Vancouver-based society, said the organization wants to make serious suggestions to all the party leadership candidates. “We will be sending (the pledge) to all the candidates today for them to sign and make a promise. That’s the measure of people power and it will be interesting who signs it and who does not,” Chu said. “In the case of Richmond, more than half the city is Chinese or Asian and that’s one of the reasons we’ve decided to hold this event here.” see Chu page 3

Peek-a-boo into a new year. Emma, 4, makes an incense prayer for the Lunar New Year at the Lingyen Mountain Temple.
The big hand had just ticked a few seconds passed 4:30 p.m. on a cold, sunny late winter’s afternoon when a glow emerged from the black of the Massey Tunnel and lit a fuse under a city. It’s almost a year to the day when the Olympic flame arrived in Richmond from Delta, igniting a passion never seen before in the city. Tens of thousands of star-struck people lined the streets of the Olympic Torch route, creating an atmosphere that will live long in the minds of Richmondites. Many can remember where they were on that route and can vividly recall their emotions as they waited and waited and then finally caught their first glimpse of the flame. That unforgettable day is etched into the memory of Bob Mukai — a senior and lifelong Steveston resident, who was one of the lucky few to bear the torch in his home town. “I was nervous that morning for sure, because I was wondering how I could carry it for 300 metres and not drop it,” said Mukai, who uses a wheelchair. “I had been practicing a lot before that day, but I was still worried. When I saw the torch coming towards me, I thought, ‘Oh wow, my time’s coming.’ “I remember thinking ‘I can’t flub this one, I can’t mess it up,’ as there were thousands of people there.” see page 3 for full story

I remember having tear in my eye: Mukai Torchbearers, mayor recall special memories of one year ago
BY A LAN C AMPBELL

R
emembering the actual moment he was handed the Olympic Torch by fellow Steveston senior and former classmate Jim Kojima, Bob Mukai said he tried his best to slow it all down and soak it all up. “For me, it was a very historical moment,” he said. “My grandfather had immigrated to Steveston and my father grew up here, as did I. “It was a very emotional moment when I actually carried it for that 300 metres. “I remember having a tear in my eye because my father wasn’t there to see it, he passed away a couple of years before. But it was still a very special moment.” Mukai’s buddy, Kojima, similarly recalls dealing with nerves and excitement on the day the torch arrived in Richmond. “I knew my family, including grandchildren, would be at the start of my run … I was also being interviewed by Shaw (TV) prior to my run and I did not know what to expect,” Kojima said. “As I got close by bus to where I was running, there was a large sign, saying ‘GO GRANDPA GO’ held up by my grandchildren, which made me a little nervous, but excited to know my family and friends were there. “When it was lit, I seemed to get more energy and started to run rather quickly and it took me a lot less than three minutes. At the end of my run, my high school classmate, Robert Mukai, was waiting for me to light his torch. This was very special.” Standing with Kojima and Mukai that special day was their

Thousands of people lined the length of Williams Road, below, to greet the Olympic torch. Above left, Bob Mukai and his wife, Ruth, moments after he carried the torch, while, above right, Mayor Malcolm Brodie has fond memories of the day the Olympic flame arrived in his city. Go to www.richmond-news.com for a look at more photos from the torch relay. friend, Coun. Bill McNulty. One word, for McNulty, captures the Olympic Torch relay day in Richmond, “euphoria.” “I remember that whole day having a feeling of euphoria that this mystical athletic endeavour was coming to our city,” he said. “I think it was then that it really kicked in that the Olympic Games had arrived in our city. I can remember this intense feeling of national pride. This was our finest hour.” To be the mayor of a city the
size of Richmond is one thing. It’s quite another to be the mayor of a city that jumped onto the Olympic bandwagon with both feet and produced the biggest turn out to greet the torch than any other on the Canada-wide run. “There was a great crowd of people and everyone was dressed in Canadian gear, and I had a few moments to talk to the torchbearers,” said Brodie, who was “Johnny on the spot” when the flame passed through the tunnel and stopped briefly at No. 5 Road
and Steveston Highway. “I remember telling (the torchbearers) how very proud we were all feeling at that time. “At that moment there was a reality that it was finally actually happening, the biggest sporting event in the world was here. “And when I saw the crowds of people already there, I knew that Richmond would turn out in big numbers that night.” Later that night, as Rick Hansen rolled into Minoru Arena with the flame aglow, en route to lighting the community cauldron, Brodie remembers looking out from the stage at the thousands of people who’d squeezed in to witness a small piece of history being made. “It was a very positive experience. It was right up there (with the best),” he said. “It was a great thrill, as we had hoped that Richmond would engage in the Games and that proved to be the case that night.”
Chu: We need to bridge massive gap in B.C. history Continued from page 1 “Also, with such a high population of Chinese in Richmond, we believe it’s incumbent upon our Richmond MLAs to demand more recognition for their Chinese constituents. “More needs to be done to rec-
ognize Chinese history here in B.C. and Canada. At high school here, there’s not a whole lot of talk about Chinese history or what they have done here.” The Chinese have been here “since day one of B.C.,” he added. “We need to address that massive
gap in the understanding of who we are, we simply can’t allow it to continue.” Chu said the society will be asking every leadership candidate for an undertaking to lead, promote and support the passage of motions to the effect that the history of
the Chinese Canadians in B.C. be acknowledged. “This could be achieved in the form of learning outcomes in the education system,” Chu said. “We will let people know who signs the agreement and who doesn’t.” 02045843

PUBLIC ART
Make your Biennale mark Now is your chance to decide whether the City of Richmond should spend up to $650,000 on keeping one of the Biennale public artworks. The public online survey opened up on Thursday with two questions; one asking you to agree or not to the city spending the money from the public art reserve and a second asking you which one of five the city should keep, with a “none of the above” option. You will have until Feb. 18 to make your mark. The controversial Lenin/Miss Mao piece at Alderbridge and Elmbridge ways is valued at $700,000, Wind Waves at Garry Point has
a $400,000 price tag and Water #10 on the middle arm dyke at Cambie Road could cost around $600,000. The city is stressing, however, that the $650,000 in the public art pot is not tax dollars and, instead, is funds accumulated from developers’ contributions in lieu of installing public art. According to the city, funds in the reserve may only be used to support public art projects in the city. The survey can be found at www.richmond.ca/publicart. Printed copies (English and Chinese) can be found in the Richmond Cultural Centre, 7700 Minoru Gate and city hall, 6911 No. 3 Rd. Feedback from the public will be compiled and included in a report to council this spring.

Beneficiaries of Estates sometimes complain that the Executor of the Estate does not communicate, so they don’t know the status of the Estate and their inheritance. What the beneficiaries can do here, is bring a claim against the Executor under Section 99 of the B.C. Trustee Act, and force the Executor to “pass his Accounts” before a Supreme Court Registrar. In the case of Bernhard v. Wist (reasons released this week), the children of the deceased brought such proceedings against the Executor. The Estate is not large (about $430,000) but the Executor did not provide an accounting for over a year. The Court in a lengthy and careful review of the facts, passed the Executor’s accounts, but reduced his fee and the parties were told to resolve other issues between them. It isn’t that the Executor did a bad job, but it appears relations between the Executor and the beneficiaries soured and the accounting which still should have been provided, was not.

RCMP issue kids’ bus safety warning
Guaranteed for 5 years against breakage
Every year children are injured or killed in school bus related incidents. And Richmond RCMP’s road safety unit has been focusing on school bus safety in an effort to make the community a safer place. Some of the incidents are as a result of a collision between the school bus and another vehicle, while many others are injured or killed as they fail to clear the area around the bus and are struck by oncoming traffic. “Parents can keep their children safe by

raising their awareness of potential hazards while riding a school bus,” Cpl. Sherrdean Turley, of Richmond RCMP, said. “Drivers can make a concerned effort at making school bus safety a priority by obeying the rules of the road.” Follow these tips for children’s safety: ❚ Wear bright colored clothing. ❚ Move away from the bus when exiting. ❚ Stay away from the bus wheels. ❚ If crossing the street, look both ways and cross when traffic is stopped.

Thursday marked a new beginning. It was the Chinese New Year, the start of the The Year of the Rabbit. Millions, if not billions, of people around the world celebrated around dinner tables, at temples and on the streets in festive, colourful parades. The Lunar New Year brought a feeling of optimism and renewal into Richmond and other communities across the Lower Mainland. And there is something very important about that. In this part of the world where we’re often accused of lacking a culture, we, as Canadians, have become adept at adopting others, which in itself has become ours. We know what Kung Hei Fat Choi means, or what the little red envelopes bring, and many of us, even those who don’t believe in horoscopes, know under which animal year we were born. For more evidence of our cultural fusion, just take a look at your mail this month, you may see a new Canada Post stamp that commemorates the new year with a white rabbit hopping across a red background amid swirls of gold. Bunnies on stamps may seem trivial, but in fact it speaks to the way traditions have been embraced and celebrated. As in any other society, cultural tensions do arise. Pretending otherwise would not serve anyone. But the more we respect and revel in each others festivities, even if it is just eating a moon cake or a mandarin, or giving away a Hong Bao (red packet), the richer we are for it. Happy New Year, Kung Hei Fat Choi.

The Editor, Re: “Property tax rise to go ahead despite surplus,” News, Jan. 26. I have been pondering the article on city hall and comments made by Coun. Ken Johnston regarding our property tax rise. It mentioned the $16 million accumulated surplus and the $159 million reserve, what I didn’t see was the councilman asking about the city borrowing $60 million toward some quite irresponsible spending or how much interest the accumulative money is earning against what the taxpayers will be paying on the interest on that $60 million. I have yet to see how much the “Olympic” lights cost us to keep on, or how much the maintenance cost is for the boulevards down the middle of No. 3 Road, or frankly, any other ridiculous costs this council keeps sucking out of the taxpayer. What I will remember when it comes time to vote is who said no to more garbage they call art and who wanted to ensure their own political longevity by getting their term increased. It is time to shorten the terms of the people who think that they know what is best for the people (nanny state) and start retaining people who will take care of the taxpayers money, quit assuming that taxpayer money is theirs to do with as they please with no regard to the taxpayer. As for not getting my vote in the next election, I would like Mr. Johnston to understand that, just because he thinks that 2.95 is not a big percentage, I can assure him that, as it is more than double my pension increase, it is a lot to me. I hope the taxpayers in Richmond don’t develop amnesia at the next election, and give pause before marking their X beside the elitists on the council. R. Costain Richmond

We’re brimming with possibilities It’s been almost one year since Richmond helped host the 2010 Olmypic Winter Games, but our community still continues to benefit from the many legacies left behind by the Games. One of the many benefits has been a more vibrant arts and cultural scene and an expanded calendar of community events that help make Richmond a livelier and more enjoyable place to live and to visit. The first Richmond Winter Festival was held in 2007 at city hall. Our intention was to create a new free, family-oriented seasonal celebration for our community that showcased Richmond’s sports, arts and cultural groups. At the same time, Winterfest served as our annual countdown to the 2010 Games. Five years later, Winterfest Weekend has grown to become one of our largest and most popular annual festivals. This year, Winterfest Weekend returns to the Richmond Olympic Oval on Feb. 12 and 13, and will feature main stage entertainment throughout the day, free public skating and ice sport demonstrations, interactive sport activities, special cultural presentations, art displays and sales, children’s activities and more. It will also give the community a chance to check out the new post-Games Richmond Olympic Oval. If you have not been in the oval since the Games ended, you will be surprised by all the many different sport,
Coun. Bill McNulty CITY SCENE
recreation, fitness and cultural activities that are now taking place there. It is truly a venue that offers something for everyone. Winterfest Weekend also became the seed for the six-week long Richmond Winter Festival of the Arts. The Festival of the Arts showcases all the great shows, performances, exhibits and other arts and cultural events that happen in Richmond during the winter season. With new events like the popular Richmond Children’s Festival and the Minoru Chapel Opera series, along with the regular seasonal offerings at the Gateway Theatre, Richmond Arts Gallery and others, the Richmond calendar has never been fuller. The third annual Richmond Winter Festival of the Arts runs from Feb. 1 to March 15. To find out more details about both Winterfest Weekend and the Richmond Winter Festival of the Arts, visit www.richmondwinterfestival.ca While winter will be a busy season, this summer is also going to be an exciting time, particularly in Steveston. While our plans for a major Tall Ships festival this summer have been scaled back, there’s still going to be plenty of excite-
ment along the Steveston waterfront. On the weekend of June 3 to 7 we are still expecting visits from four to five tall ships, including the very popular Lady Washington (seen in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies) and the Hawaiian Chieftain. The ships will be docked at our new berths being built at Garry Point. We are hoping to work with local community groups and other partners to create a smaller mini-festival with entertainment and family activities to complement the visit by these ships. We are also exploring the possibility of having other tall ships visit throughout the summer, along with reinstituting the Richmond Maritime Festival, which had been cancelled for this year, in August. Many of our community partners in Steveston are planning events to coincide with the tall ships visits, as well as hosting their own events, including, of course, the Steveston Salmon Festival, one of the oldest and largest Canada Day celebrations in the nation. It will be an exciting summer season in Steveston as we continue to build toward our overall goal of making Richmond a centre for major events in the region. We proved during the Olympics we can stage great events. Over the next few years, we will continue to build upon that success and I invite you to join us along the way. It’s going to be a lot of fun.

The Editor, Richmond is a unique community. It is one of the healthiest and most culturally diverse communities in Canada. Richmond’s Highway to Heaven (aka No. 5 Road), is home to more than twenty places of worship representing different faiths. In this context, organizations like Richmond Multicultural Concerns Society (RMCS) have been doing a commendable job in promoting intercultural harmony. Its latest project, Inter-Faith Bridging, is another example of RMCS’ commitment to robust multiculturalism. In co-operation with Embrace BC, City of Richmond and various other community partners, RMCS launched the Inter-Faith Bridging project last year. As part of this project, a num-

A 40-something actor portraying an 18-year-old in the early 1800s might appear a bit ambitious. Not so, said Vancouver actor Robert Moloney. He portrays Pip in Charles Dickens’ tale of love, loyalty and hope — Great Expectations, on now at the Gateway Theatre. “That wasn’t the toughest part. My role is emotionally challenging because I open up to all of Pip’s heartache throughout his life,” he said. “It’s also physically demanding because I only leave the stage three times for quick costume changes.” Nor was the English brogue that difficult for Moloney to master. “I just finished shooting a television series called K-9 for six months
in Australia, where I had to learn to speak with an accent,” he said. “I also spent time listening to tapes and watching English movies, set in that time period.” The News sat down with the affable actor with striking blue eyes, to chat about his role in the play, which opened last night on the Main Stage. Pip is a young orphaned boy being brought up by his cruel sister Mrs. Joe. “His sister never let’s Pip forget he’s a burden,” said Moloney. Thankfully, the young man has a kindly uncle who is a blacksmith, and who takes Pip under his wing. “Pip, at 18, has a real sense of wonder,” Moloney said. “I focus on his enthusiasm, naivety, as well as his fear.” Meanwhile, fate intervenes when

Pip is “forced” to go play at the mansion of the wealthy eccentric, Miss Havisham. It is there, over time, that Pip falls in love with her adopted daughter Estella. “Without giving too much away, he falls in love with her despite the fact that he is a commoner and she’s a lady,” he said. “But Pip dreams of becoming a gentleman and tries to woo her.” Moloney is reviving his role; one that received raved reviews when Great Expectations premiered at the Persephone Theatre in Saskatoon last October. Moloney was honoured and thrilled by the audience response. “We received standing ovations every night during the two-week run,” said the young-looking actor of film, television and stage. see Pip on page 11

Pip: A roller-coaster life story

Robert Moloney portrays Pip in Great Expectations, playing at the Gateway Theatre until Feb. 19. is set during England’s Industrial Revolution, Moloney spent countless hours researching the era. “London was the epicentre of the industrial revolution and it was moving full steam ahead,” said Moloney. “London at the

“We have quite an ensemble cast, 13 in all … everyone is back for this production.” When he was approached last year for the role of Pip, Moloney was instantly attracted. “I was intrigued by Pip’s journey, what his character goes through,” he said, adding that in all his years acting, he has never performed in a Dickens’ piece. “Pip’s life is a roller-coaster, a remarkable life, really, and the play spans more than three decades of his life.” What he most enjoys about Pip “is that he’s able to see his mistakes and own up to them and correct them.” Even more interesting for the graduate of the prestigious Studio 58 program, was the opportunity to delve into a Dickens play. “Charles Dickens had a keen sense for people and their suffering,” he said. “He also had an acute sense of society and what created society’s suffering.” As Great Expectations
coal made it pitch black during the day,” he said. “That time period offered him a rich palate from which to write stories.” He added Great Expectations has all the makings of a great play. “I honestly believe this play has everything people who love theatre come for,” said Moloney. “There’s terrific acting, a great epic story and it’s a very personal story as well. In the end, Moloney said he couldn’t decide if the play is a confession or a cautionary tale. “Perhaps, it’s a little of both,” he said. Great Expectations is adapted by U.B.C. graduate Errol Durbach, in coproduction with Blackbird Theatre Company. It runs at the Gateway Theatre until Feb. 19. FIRST STEPS TO A NEW YEAR WITH FENG SHUI
02045359
BY MICHELLE HOPKINS With the beginning of a new year, many people will bring out their brooms, pull out their cleaning supplies and give the house an early spring cleaning. Houses will also be festooned with flowers and colourful lanterns, while kitchens all over Richmond will be abuzz with activity as cooks bake cakes to serve on New Year’s Day. It’s all about welcoming the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Rabbit, with a little feng shui. The Chinese New Year is filled with symbols, many of which are still commonly practised here in Canada. “The Chinese believe that a clean house and new clothing bring good luck for the New Year,” said Henry Beh, executive director of the Richmond Chinese Community Society (RCCS). Beh’s family — wife Glenda and sons Albert, 32, and Stephen, 29 — along with relatives and friends will gather at the dining room table to enjoy a New Year’s Day (Feb. 3) feast, which will culminate with Glenda’s Tarot root and turnip cakes. “Glenda also makes a delicious brown sugar and a sticky rice cake (called Nian Gao),” adds Beh. “This cake is traditionally eaten on New Year’s Day.”

He went on to say that buying new clothing is still a custom practised in China, however, he believes it has waned a bit in Canada. “We don’t normally buy new clothes but we will wear something red on New Year’s to symbolize good luck, good health and prosperity,” Beh said. Another long-held custom from the old country, one that Beh holds dear, is to hand out red packets (called hong bao) to family and friends to bring forth much luck for the New Year. “I place $5, $10 or $20 in each envelope and hand them out to the younger single relatives, friends and to my volunteers and staff at RCCS,” Beh said. Although he tries to keep up the rituals he grew up with, times have changed, Beh said. Beh grew up in Malaysia. He clearly remembers how, every year just prior to the eve of Chinese New Year, his mother would make him sweep the floors and paint the front door. “The house had to look like it was new,” he said fondly. “I also helped clean the ceiling fans and the windows.” His sons, however, get off easy, Beh said with a laugh. He said he has been a little slack when it comes to them practising feng shui in their Richmond home.

Predictions for 2011
Below is the second half of the Chinese horoscopes for 2011. The first six signs were featured in last week’s Chinese New Year section in the Richmond News. Predictions for the various signs, in the Year of the Rabbit, are by Sherman Tai. Dog: 1910, 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006 In the year of the Rabbit, the Dog’s luck is good. However, because the Dog tends to focus on love interests, the Dog may lack motivation and drive, missing out on good career and financial opportunities. This is a year that the Dog can come out strong, just not as confident. The Dog needs to be careful about gambling, investing and trading stocks, as greed can cause financial loss and even loss of reputation. A key to success for the Dog this year is having good harmony and relationship with colleagues, being able to cooperate well and work as a team to achieve positive results. Relationships for the Dog tend to be more heated this year, so avoid arguments that are truly unnecessary. The Dog should try to control his/her anger. Monkey: 1908, 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956,
1968, 1980, 1992, 2004 It could be a tough year for the Monkey. He/she will need confidence and wisdom, in order to make this a happier and more prosperous year. At the same time, there has to be risk in order to have success and so with strength, knowledge and skills, new opportunities may arise. This is a year where keeping the status quo is not as good idea. It is crucial to keep improving skills and make positive changes, or else risk losing key success opportunities. The single female Monkey may have many suitors. For the Monkey in a long-term relationship, this is a good year to get married. The male Monkey needs to be careful of being overly involved with women to the point that career and reputation is negatively affected. Horse: 1906, 1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002 The year of the Rabbit is a good one for the Horse. Career,
money and relationship are all expected to be good. The business owner should consider increasing his manpower and not be too conservative, because this is a year to move forward, expand and reap profits. The Horse should have a good chance at finding love this year; however, what’s real or not may be difficult to determine, so take the time to get to know the person well before you jump into something more permanent. However, the Horse may have issues prioritizing love and career. Furthermore, the Horse may have too high of expectations, leading to risk taking, turning good luck into bad luck. The Horse’s financial picture looks good and returns should be better than previous years. However, as far as investing in stocks, the Horse must not be too trusting of the advice of others but rather trust his own intuition. Goat: 1907, 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003 The Goat’s luck in the year of the Rabbit is expected to be better than last year’s and considerably more stable as well. Things tend to start off slow and there may appear to be obstacles, but with determination, the Goat may be able to reap financial rewards. If the Goat takes the chance to go abroad to
work, then he may be able to meet a good mentor, which will help improve his luck in all of life’s challenges and opportunities. The Goat’s financial luck this year is one of initial challenges, which are subsequently overcome. The opportunities to find love are good this year. However, the Goat must take the time and make an effort in order for love to bloom. Rooster: 1909, 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005 The key factor in the Rooster’s success or failure this year is timing, the ability to see opportunities when they arise. However, the Rooster should not try to rush to make up for it, but rather, be patient and wait until the next opportunity comes. If the Rooster is able to be flexible in relationships with both clients and colleagues, there may be opportunities for a promotion, a change of career or to branch out and become an entrepreneur. For the entrepreneur Rooster, there will seem to be a string of obstacles and fierce competition at the beginning of the year. But if the Rooster is able to make changes and consider expanding to other areas rather than being too conservative, and is able to make use of the talents of employees, by the end of the year, there can be good returns.
Love can be good for the single rooster this year. The single male Rooster will easily meet someone abroad and if it is the right person, he should work hard to pursue her. The single female Rooster should beware of those charming rogues, otherwise, she might lose more than her heart. Pig: 1911, 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007 Luck for the Pig in the year of the Rabbit is stable and increasing. Though there may be some initial obstacles, they can be overcome with hard work, adaptability, and perseverance. Because of the position of stars, the Pig can have someone who can help them through problems this year. As long as the Pig is hard working, this can be a good year. The key to greater success this year is the Pig’s ability to utilize connections and not be afraid to ask for help. Though the Pig may be lucky in his investments, avoid borrowing money to invest in stocks or real estate; otherwise the Pig could lose money. Remember, money does not come to those who are impulsive. The opportunities for love are a little more disappointing this year for the Pig. There tends to be a lot of fake people and false intentions with the opposite sex – the message here is beware.

Golden Corn Fish Slices, a delicious symbol of bounty Richmond’s Colin Foo is one busy man. The philanthropist/actor/ singer/artist is always on the go and can be seen in movies, television series and commercials on a regular basis. Foo was recently cast as a monk in the television series V, and as a goofy Chinese waiter in Brent Butt’s television comedy Hiccups. He also portrayed a lunatic who goes after Halle Berry in the movie called Frankie and Alice. But when Foo is not on the set, he’s in the kitchen. The News asked the accomplished cook to provide a recipe for a traditional dish that he serves during the Chinese New Year. “This dish is very symbolic for Chinese New Year,” Foo said. “The golden corn signifies wealth and gold, and the fish signifies good harvest and plentiful bounty.”
Golden Corn Fish Slices Ingredients:
454 grams (1 pound) white fish sliced (halibut or cod are good choices) 250 ml (1 cup) of can whole kernel golden corn 250 ml (1 cup) of sliced, drained straw mushrooms. 250 ml (1 cup) of shredded carrots 15 ml (1 T) spoon of chopped spring onions 2.5 ml (½ tsp) chopped garlic 2.5 ml (½ tsp) chopped ginger Several sprigs of fresh cilantro for garnishing Two egg whites, lightly beaten. 60 ml (4 T) of vegetable cooking oil. Dash of Chinese cooking wine
Sauce:
5 ml (1 tsp) of tapioca powder or corn starch
5 ml (1 tsp) oyster sauce. 15 ml (1 T) of light soya sauce Dash of white pepper and salt Mix all the above ingredients in a mixing bowl. Then add 1 cup of chicken broth and mix well.
Method:
Heat the wok on medium heat and add the cooking oil. Add carrots and sliced straw mushrooms, and give it a good stir. Put the sliced fish in and give it another stir. Add the cooking wine to get rid of any fishy flavour, and then quickly add the golden corn and chopped spring onions. Bring the heat up to high and add the seasoning mixture. Bring the entire mixture to a boil for a minute or two — no longer. (Cooking fish for too long makes it rubbery.) Pour the egg whites in and stir. Shut off the heat and serve the dish on a nice platter and garnish with sprigs of cilantro.

“ON THE ROAD AGAIN” PAYMENT PLAN
DODGE
Chrysler is back from the brink Firm recovers from financial woes to launch new, revamped models Special to the News
Chrysler appears to have recovered from its crippling financial woes and, with a helping hand from Italian auto giant Fiat, looks ready to soar again with a newlook winged emblem. It also brings an end the new product famine at Chrysler and Dodge dealers, as they are about to feast on eight new or revamped models. The pent up energy in the now youthful engineering and marketing teams was also plainly evident as they burst out of the gate with what must be a record amount of new product reveals at the same time. In the Dodge line extensive revisions have been made to Journey (a popular seven-passenger CUV), the Grand Caravan (the minivan that started it all), Avenger (a mid-sized sedan), Charger (and upmarket performance sedan) and Challenger (a high-powered sport coupe). There’s also a new Dodge Durango, which is now based on the Mercedes ML platform (instead of a truck chassis). And Chrysler gets a new Town & Country (luxury minivan) and a new 200, which takes the place of the current Sebring. A lot of attention was paid to suggestions and critiques from current customers. While the exterior styling changes are not dramatically different, the interiors are not just completely new, they reflect the new thinking behind them, which puts a much higher emphasis on quality and the occupants environment. “We’ve essentially remade these vehicles from the ground up,” said Ralph Gilles, a designer who is now president and CEO of the Dodge Car brand at Chrysler. “We’re powering them with new, fuel-efficient powertrains and new driving dynamics that are tuned to thrill customers who really love to drive. We’ve also taken a giant leap in improved interior quality. Our customers will have to get inside and behind the wheel to experi-
ence the changes. When they do, they’ll be able to see the passion that went into designing and engineering these new products.” A healthy Chrysler is also important to Canada as it’s still the second largest maker of vehicles built in Canada. The current Dodge Grand Caravan is the big ticket; it accounts for about 70 per cent of all minivan sales in Canada and it’s the number three top-selling vehicle in Canada. The Chrysler Town & Country pulls in about another five per cent of minivan sales. The 2011 Grand Caravan has more power, is more fuel efficient, has an allnew interior, improved safety features and $2,550 in added features. Its base price goes up by $550, which means there’s a net increase in value of $2,000. A new 3.6-litre Pentastar V-6 engine is mated to a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transaxle. It replaces all three of the previous minivan engines (the 3.3-litre, 3.8-litre and 4.0litre V-6 engines are gone) and it can also be found in the other new 20111 Dodge products. The new Pentastar engine can provide 283 horsepower and more 260 lb.-ft. of torque without a fuel economy sacrifice. Chief engineer, Chrysler Town & Country and Grand Caravan, Olabisi (Bisi) Boyle is also a soccer mom ... and proud of it. “The two most important and complicated challenges, from an engineering perspective, that my team faced were improving the vehicle’s handling and making the Stow-n-Go second row seating system more comfortable and easier to use,” said Boyle. Improved stability in a straight line and through corners was achieved by lowering the suspension and stiffening the spring dampening. A combination of changes to the steering column mount, improved suspension bushings, changes to the steering (reduced lock-tolock steering wheel rotation) plus wider, wider low
rolling resistance tires all contributed to its more agile and better handling feel. The Stow-n-Go second row seats are a Chrysler exclusive feature. The size of the storage box could not be increased, so a clever solution was to pivot the head restraints higher and allow a taller seatback. A new single action foldaway mechanism also makes
it an easier task to stow them under the floor. The Dodge Grand Caravan and its gang of seven other new 2011 vehicles have already arrived at your local Dodge and Chrysler dealerships.

Nowadays, it seems everyone is on more of a time constraint with work and family commitments but that doesn’t mean that you still can’t achieve your fitness goals with efficient and effective workouts. The first step is to workout in a circuit fashion by performing 2-4 exercises in succession with minimal rest in between each exercise. This will help to increase overall workout intensity, elevate your
metabolism, and strengthen your cardiovascular system all at the same time. The second step is to use compound exercises (exercises that use multiple muscle groups) as this better increases caloric expenditure, strength, and muscle mass versus isolation exercises that use only one muscle group at a time. Overall, the key to getting in shape is to not only work hard but also work smart by getting more done in less time. Make every minute count and you’ll be surprised at what kind of results you could achieve.

Bradley praised for play at San Diego lacrosse tourney
Richmond’s Quinton Bradley was among five players from the Burnaby Mountain Selects field lacrosse program selected to play in an all-star game at last month’s Adrenaline Challenge in San Diego, CA. Bradley, a defender with the Selects’ senior team, suited up in the Adrenaline Elite Division all-star game. He was joined by teammate Tyler Buchan (Burnaby). Three members of the Selects’ Sophomore team — Kyran Clarke (Port Coquitlam), Riley Glemnitz (Pit Meadows) and Aaron Madaisky (Surrey) participated in the South Swell High School Division allstar tilt. The McNair secondary student not only got to suit up with the tournament’s top players, he also got the attention of Inside Lacrosse (ESPN affiliate) assistant editor Geoff Shannon who took in the all-star game.
“Unfamiliarity and fatigue can be an issue with tournament all-star games, as it was with this one, but there was still some interesting talent in Sunday’s bestof-the-best contest,” said Shannon. “Bradley showed nice skill as a defenseman/ LSM.” The Selects Senior team also included Richmond’s Wade Galbraith (Burnett) and Tyler Nett (Hugh Boyd), while Brad Hofmann (McMath), Evan Hunt (McMath) and Jonah Sahota (McMath), suited up for the Sophomore squad. More than 80 teams across four divisions descended on the Del Mar Polo Fields to contend for what is largely regarded as the western region club lacrosse championship. The Selects combined to post an impressive record of 8-2 (.800) in a tournament field of top club teams from Alberta, Arizona, British
Columbia, California, Idaho, Missouri, Nevada, Texas, Utah and Washington. The Senior Selects went 4-1 (.800), reaching the Adrenaline Elite Division Semi-Finals, while the Sophomore Selects posted a 4-1 (.800) record in the South Swell High School Division. The BMS Seniors used five games to outscore their opponents by a narrow margin of 30-29, going undefeated in the tournament’s round robin with wins over QC Elite (6-5), Golden Gate U18 (7-4) and L.A. Lazers Pink (7-4). Entering the eight-team playoff round as the fifth seed, the Selects would upset fourth seeded Seattle Starz (8-4). They would then fall short of their attempt to become the first Canadian team to reach an elite division championship game at a major Adrenaline tournament, losing to Brady’s Bunch (12-2) in the

Sports Hockey scores big for food bank
Minor hockey associations scored big during their recent Boston Pizza Food Bank Week. The city’s three associations — Seafair, Richmond Minor and Richmond Ravens Female — recently teamed up to give boost to the inventory at the Richmond Food Bank. When all was said and done, 4,185 food items were collected, along with $5,137,50 in cash donations. “We set a goal of a toonie and two cans of food per player,” explained Seafair executive and event organizer Ken Hamaguchi. “With (a combined) 1,500 players among us, we far surpassed those expectations. “When we gave the results to the Richmond Food Bank, they were ecstatic. They said we definitely made their top 10 list of fundraisers.” The top team from each of the three associations — 4-C1 Breakers (Seafair), Midget A2 Blues (Richmond Minor) and Novice White (Richmond Ravens) won a team party at Boston Pizza. The Breakers’ total included Rajan Leung collecting 200 cans a food alone, by

soliciting local grocery stores, while teammate Tanner Blair went around his neighbourhood and came up with 105 cans and $53 in cash. Logan Nelson (160 cans), Jack Spare (88 cans) and Mattias Hohlweg also led the efforts. “Hockey players are very dependent upon the city of Richmond and our business and community sponsors for their financial support,” added Hamaguchi. “It was nice to see the three hockey association give back to the community.”

Obituaries
DUNFEE EDWARD JOHN (TED) Mar. 24, 1953 – Jan. 27, 2011 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dearly loved son; father, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend. Ted will be lovingly remembered by sons, Sasha and Satori, devoted mother, Enid, brother Don (Karen), sister Patricia Tesan (Ric), niece Erin Tesan, nephews Bryan Tesan, Adam and Evan Dunfee, aunts, uncles fourteen cousins and many friends around the globe. His beloved father, Donald R. Dunfee, and lifelong friend Gary Coull predeceased Ted. Ted was born in Calgary, Alberta. He lived in Trinidad for three years before moving to Vancouver. He attended Trafalgar Elementary School, Prince of Wales High School and Brentwood College for grades ten to twelve. It was at Brentwood he developed his indomitable independent spirit and his love of language. The seeds of his journalistic career were sown in the classrooms, fields and auditorium of Brentwood. He always felt privileged to have studied under the tutelage of such fine teachers. Ted attended the University of Victoria briefly, then enrolled at the wellregarded Langara College Journalism Program, from which he graduated. Upon graduation he toured the Middle East and Europe with Gary Coull and an ever changing cast of characters. He returned to Canada in order to finance his next adventure. In 1978 he arrived in Hong Kong to once again join Gary Coull. He immediately found work with Hong Kong Morning Herald, later moving to the South China Morning Post and the Hong Kong Tourism Association. He remained in Hong Kong for seven years, becoming reasonably fluent in Cantonese. Some assignments took him to Bangkok, a city he came to regard as home. He joined Asia Week Magazine so that he could be based in Bangkok. He became fluent in Thai. He married, and fathered two sons. Within two months of the birth of his second son he was struck by encephalitis. He was treated with a drug that engendered a stroke. He was three months in a coma, guarded at all times by one or both of his parents. Upon repatriation he endured a tortuous rehabilitation, first at the UBC Hospital, then, in turn, G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre and the George Pearson Centre. During this time his goal was to live on his own. He overcame many obstacles and managed to live in his own apartment in Richmond for seventeen years. Throughout this time a retinue of dedicated caregivers aided him. As Ted was unable to care for his boys, he was forever grateful to Pat and Ric who raised them as though they were their own, but always respecting the fact that they are Ted’s boys. The family would also like to give special thanks to Mike who supported Ted so well in his final weeks. Ted will be missed, but his legacy of great writing and hilarious adventures will live on. A celebration of Ted’s life will take place at the Richmond Funeral Home, 8420 Cambie Road, Richmond, B.C., at 2:00 PM on Monday, February 7, 2011. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Family Support Institute 227 – 6th Street, New Westminster, B.C. V3L 3A5 On-line condolences can be sent to www.richmond-funeral.ca

Cancer June 21-July 22: The emphasis lies on mysteries, sex, intimacy, research, large finances, lifestyle, crucial health matters, commitment – anything that can change your life deeply (usually another person is involved). This month, these changes tend to work through your ambitions, career, or status situations. E.g., a “status” wedding changes your life and finances. Or a career opportunity demands a commitment (of $?) from you, and will change your life. (Your career is marked by splendid luck this winter/spring.) Charge ahead SundayWednesday (a happy day!). Retreat, rest, plan Friday eve, Saturday. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Relationships, relocation, dealings with the public, fame, negotiations, litigation, agreements, opportunities and opposition – these fill February. This week, especially Sunday to Tuesday, emphasizes the source of this winter/spring’s good luck: legal, loving, intellectual, international and cultural scenes. Work, health and your duties or ambitions might interfere – these are heading for a deep change and “rebirth.” (It centres on Wednesday, but could occur anytime in February.) Chase your ambitions Wednesday, but avoid conflict, aggression Thursday. Joy, friends, Friday/Saturday! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Work’s essential – get it done. Your efforts, duties (and perhaps health) are tied up with an influence of deep change this month, especially this Sunday to Tuesday. This can manifest as: a sexual affair with a co-worker, investment in your job or tools/machinery, or changes brought about by your job or health – all are agents of change – beneficial change. Money goes better than romance right now. A gentle love floats in Wednesday, but irritation dissipates affection Thursday. (DON’T invest or make big changes this day.) Be ambitious Friday eve, Saturday – success accompanies you!

Aries March 21 - April 19: Lie low, rest Sunday morning. This afternoon to Tuesday your energy and charisma surge – a bit of big luck could come, maybe involving home, relationships or money. (However, don’t push authorities.) Chase money Wednesday to Friday noon – but take care with purchases. Your hopes and your money resources (earnings level, savings) are in conflict – find reality. You might sense, or be offered, a career or status “partnership.” It’s subtle, you have to be intuitive or watch clues. Friday eve, Saturday bring errands, casual friends, curiosity and variety – read, write, talk. Taurus April 20-May 20: The emphasis lies on ambition, career, prestige relationships, your reputation and status. Elements of fantasy/deception, creative ideas and impatient bosses crowd this zone. If you deal with government, large corporations, institutions or charitable agencies, “impatient bosses” will be less of a factor. Be willing, quick to respond – and keep your sense of humour (especially Thursday!). Use Sunday eve through Tuesday for research and planning – get plenty of rest. Your energy surges Wednesday to Friday: display your skills, work hard. Excellent purchases Friday eve, Saturday. Gemini May 21-June 20: The accent lies on gentle love, compassion, broad vision, law, higher education, publishing, far travel and cultural rituals. February 5/6’s sober, realistic love wish is almost sure to come true. But a “sweet confection” love wish, involving beauty, and perhaps involving a Libra or Taurus, is less likely to come true. (Some “destiny” lies in wait for this one – either a wipe-out, or a deep rebirth.) In other ways, Sunday to Tuesday brings wish fulfillment, social delights and happiness. Rest, lie low Wednesday/Thursday. You shine, succeed and attract others, Friday eve, Saturday!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The emphasis is on romance, creativity, beauty, luck, risk, pleasure, charming kids, sports/games. You’re riding a winning streak – recognize and use it, seize on openings, issue invitations, respond, speak what’s in your heart, etc. Take a chance! The source of your January-to-June luck is highlighted Sunday afternoon through Tuesday: relationships, relocation, negotiation, agreements and contracts, litigation, co-operation. Clue: everything in the first sentence will aid these; but security, property, family will “fight” them. These, security, property, etc., are about to transform. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Be gentle on the home front – spend energy on renovations, repairs, rather than causing family friction. Think back and ahead: decide who should stay in your life, who should leave. Your choices will affect your health and your duties, for good or ill. Your work will expand for the next four months – clues arrive Sunday to Tuesday. Quiet discussions and administrative contacts benefit your efforts, but more adventurous communications (especially of love or competition) will erect barriers to work success – take heed Thursday. Mysteries, intimacy and finances succeed Friday eve, Saturday. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Romance, creativity and a risk-taking mood steal upon you Sunday afternoon to Tuesday – take that risk! But realize money and confidence aid romance/creativity more than wishful thinking does. You might have some puzzles to work out around these: romance, pleasure, money and work.Work definitely faces you Wednesday (success) and Thursday (when work interferes with romance’s communications, or might be dangerous – practise safety). Exciting meetings (and some a bit more stable, boring, with other generations) arrive Friday eve/Saturday: love’s possible! All month, money’s lucky.
Looking For a New Set of Wheels? • Search for your new vehicle by model, type or price. • Check out dealer specials. • Compare your vehicle and get factory specs by model.
All of this and more at:
driving.ca Feb. 6 - Feb. 12 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Chase money, buy/ sell, seek lucrative clients – but most importantly (as Sunday to Tuesday might whisper to you) pursue the connection between security and money: e.g., buy or sell real estate, start a retirement fund, put away funds for your children’s education, purchase insurance, spend on new business premises or to expand your territory. Ending unprofitable or stale situations is also a wise move financially. Romance and pleasure call Wednesday (successfully) and Thursday (not – beware “wasted money”). Tackle chores Friday eve, Saturday: you’re ambitious, productive! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness are at a peak! Start important projects, seek favours, call in markers, show yourself in person. You’re very communicative, curious and travel-prone this month – these are emphasized Sunday to Tuesday. A Libra and a Gemini are attracted – the Libran is very serious. A Leo wants to spar – and join. Attend to domestic matters, family and security, property and “territory” Wednesday to Friday afternoon. Don’t be overbearing Thursday p.m. Romance, creative surges and the urge to take a big chance arrive Friday eve, Saturday – yes, plunge in! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Rest, lie low, contemplate, plan. Be charitable, spiritual. Attend to obligations, committee and administrative chores. (Do taxes?) You will want to be free of these in two weeks when your energy and money luck will soar upward. Let much of your planning involve finances. Money, earnings and possession are highlighted Sunday p.m. through Tuesday – let realism rule fantasy and wishful thinking. Your wishes, however, do have a destined road ahead – something is wiped out or born this week; it changes your future. Careful with money Thursday. Deep rest, good family Saturday. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
