Is Abbott your man?

A love story

B.C. Liberal leadership hopeful George Abbott stopped by the News with some local allies to discuss Richmond’s influence on the party race.

Valerie Berg was about to leave a Single Mingle when Paul Kallio caught up to her. She didn’t feel a spark for him — until she was being rushed to hospital.

A visitor views a projection from the video The Last Riot, a new exhibit at the Richmond Art Gallery by Russian artist collective AES+F. The piece, which was one of the sensations of the 2007 Venice Biennale, is now part of the Vancouver Biennale and will be on display throughout Richmond’s Winter Festival of the Arts.

Anti-bullying flashmob video a surprise Internet hit Richmond woman came up with idea to get 300 students to do an ‘impromptu’ dance with crucial message acampbell@richmond-news.com

A Richmondite is behind an amazing anti-bullying flashmob video that went viral on the Internet within a couple of days of going live. The video — showing 300 Grade 3 to 12 students in a mall, ripping off their jackets to reveal pink anti-bullying T-shirts for an apparent impromptu dance routine — was the idea of Vancouver school principal Mette Hamaguchi. After being posted on YouTube last weekend, the performance at the Oakridge Centre by students from Hamaguchi’s David Lloyd George elementary and nearby Sir Winston Churchill secondary attracted almost 50,000 hits $

by Wednesday. On Thursday at press time, the number hit nearly 100,000. The video has also been posted on celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton’s website and the Ellen Degeneres Show — whose presenter is a high profile anti-bullying advocate — has been bombarded by emails requesting she highlight the video with the antibullying Pink Shirt Day coming up on Feb. 23. “When you start this thing from a grass roots level, you don’t really expect it to go much farther than the two schools,” said Steveston’s Hamaguchi, wife of Seafair Minor Hockey Association’s executive director Ken Hamaguchi. “We’re absolutely overwhelmed by the reaction and we’ve been

getting emails from around the world. “We did not expect it to have the effect that it now seems to be having.” Hamaguchi sheepishly admitted the flashmob — when a large group of people perform a choreographed routine in a public place in an off-the-cuff manner — was her idea. “I did come up with the idea, but the whole thing was definitely a team effort,” she said. “We were at a family function and we got talking about all the negativity with things going viral on social media. I then thought it would be a good idea to do a positive message using social media for a change. “So I said ‘let’s do a flashmob

Students create a flashmob at Oakridge centre with an anti-bullying message.

And when she asked the dance teacher at the neighbouring Churchhill secondary to help with choreography, it was decided that

B.C. Liberal leadership hopeful George Abbott on Richmond’s role in the party race BY A LAN CAMPBELL

acampbell@richmond-news.com

“What day is it? Is it Monday?” Suffice to say, George Abbott is reaching for the finishing line after a grueling 83 days into his campaign to lead the B.C. Liberal Party. Abbott — accompanied by his Richmond wingman and woman, former MLAs Greg Halsey-Brandt and Olga Ilich — stopped by the News office for a quick interview this week, en route to a luncheon in the city centre with members of the Canadian Low Income Seniors Affordable Housing Society. “It’s going very well. At least I think so,” Abbott said of his bid to win the leadership race. “We’re now about 80 days or so into I think and still another (15) days to go. But it’s good

to have the goal line in sight, as it’s been an extremely long campaign. “Even the federal campaign is only about 28 days and most days I’m not even sure what day it is.” Abbott admitted that the last few months have been “the most intense political experience of my career. If I became premier, I think it would be much more controlled.” The long-serving Shuswap MLA — who was health minister for four years and education minister briefly last year before bowing out to enter the leadership race — revealed he’s been in Richmond several times during his campaign, more so than many other ridings. “We’ve done a survey and some voter polling and I think we’re competitive in Richmond,” he said of the support he feels he has in the city.

Popular rugby ref died doing what he loved BY E VE E DMONDS

eedmonds@richmond-news.com

Dicky Evans died living his passion, said his friend and colleague, Grant Smith. The one thing he wanted to do in retirement was travel; ironically, it was traveling that killed him, said Grant. Richard Evans, known to his friends as Dicky, died while boating in New Zealand earlier this week. The Richmond rugby coach and avid soccer player was vacationing with is wife who has family in the area, according to the online New Zealand

media outlet, nzherald.co.nz. Police there said Evans, 63, was killed when he was thrown from a powerboat, which collided with a buoy in Tauranga harbour Monday afternoon. “It’s really sad,” said Smith who’s known Evans for 40 years as both a friend and colleague at the Vancouver Police Department. “Dicky was a really unique individual. He was a Welshman with a great sense of humour. I used to tell him, he must be able to sing, because Welshman can’t play rugby,” said Smith. But Evans loved his rugby. Gary Stewart, secretary with

the Richmond Rugby Football Club, said Evans will be sorely missed in the rugby world. “He was a rugby ref when I played in the ’70s and ’80s. He was a highly likeable guy — and it’s hard to be liked when you’re a rugby ref.” Stewart said quite often his team would actually request Evans referee their games. Evans leaves behind a wife and two sons, in their 30s. A service will be held in New Zealand, where his wife has family, and another service will be held in B.C., although Stewart wasn’t sure when that would be.

“I’m not sure (about the other candidates), but I think Kevin (Falcon) and Christy (Clark) have both got strong support here.” Much has been made in the last few weeks of the thousands of party members being signed up by Abbott’s leadership rivals in areas with a high South Asian population, such as Surrey, perhaps in a last ditch effort to win votes. The same, however, cannot be said for the Asian vote in Richmond, according to Abbott. “I would suspect that the Asian vote is less predictable in Richmond than the South Asian vote in Surrey. I’m certainly not aware of any huge sign ups in Richmond,” he said. “I think it seems to be much more fragmented, whereas the South Asian vote can be brought together more quickly for various reasons.” see Ilich page 6

Soccer treasurer awaits sentence

Debbie Judd, the woman at the centre of Richmond’s biggest ever soccer scandal, will be in court May 6. It is expected she will plead guilty and be sentenced on that date. Judd was charged with theft, fraud and six counts of using a forged document after $180,000 went missing from the Richmond Youth Soccer Association’s bank account back in 2003. At the time, Judd was RYSA’s treasurer and former chair. It took six years before charges were laid and another two before a final decision will be rendered. Judd has been charged with theft over $5,000, fraud over $5,000 and six counts of using a forged document.

DISABILITY

Family grateful for Variety’s help BY MICHELLE HOPKINS

mhopkins@richmond-news.com

Thirteen-year-old Osmund Chan is quite the ham. Like most teenage boys, the LondonSecondary student likes to impress. Osmund shows off prowess as he pushes himself from the floor to the couch. Not that remarkable? It is if you have cerebral palsy, an incurable condition that affects muscle movements due to brain damage. The young teen has worked hard to accomplish that feat. His mother, Cindy Chan, credits, in part, Variety — The Children’s Charity, for helping Osmund be a little more mobile and independent. Thanks to the annual Variety of Hearts Telethon — which raises money for children who have special needs and non-profits which help them and their families — Osmund can get out on a sunny day and ride his trike just like the able-bodied children on his block. “Because of Variety, Osmund was given a trike in 2007,” said Chan, who is a stay-at-home mom. “These specially equipped trikes costs thousands of dollars. “It would be a financial hardship for us if we had to pay for that besides all the other costs associated with his condition.”

Chan is determined that Osmund will be as independent as possible. To that end, Osmund has learned to hold up his head and nod yes or no to questions posed to him. Meanwhile, Chan said that the trike couldn’t have come at a better time. Osmund had been enrolled in the therapeutic equestrian program, which he looked forward to each week. However, because he was getting too heavy for the volunteers to hold up, Osmund couldn’t attend the program anymore. “Osmund used to love going there but at least with the trike, he can go out and get some other form of exercise that he enjoys,” said Chan of her only child. “When he’s out on his trike he smiles and waves to all the other kids.” More recently, Osmund was given a specialized stroller, one that costs

$4,000 — again thanks to the generosity of British Columbians who support the Variety Show of Hearts Telethon. “The government doesn’t cover the cost of this stroller,” said Chan. “This stroller means more freedom for Osmund because it’s light, fits in any car and anybody can take him out in it. “These two pieces of equipment allow Osmund to be out there having fun and interacting with people.” The 45th Annual Variety Show of Hearts Telethon is aired on Global Television on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 12 and 13. The show begins at 7 p.m. and runs until 6 p.m. Sunday. For more information or to donated to the Variety Sow of Hearts, call 310-KIDS or visit www.variety.bc.ca. Cindy Chan looks lovingly at her son, Osmund, as he rides a specially equipped tricycle he received, thanks to help from Variety.

Charity allowed extra time to pay back loan to city A non-profit organization which borrowed $25,000 from the City of Richmond’s emergency hardship fund has been given an extra six months to pay it back. The Richmond Centre for Disability (RCD) borrowed the cash last year after it ran into serious financial difficulty due to provincial grants drying up. But RCD’s board secretary, Frances Clark,

wrote to the city last month pleading for more time to repay the interest-free loan, citing “serious cash-flow challenges,” brought about by a delay in federal funding sources. Clark added in her letter that the organization was considering laying off staff in order to meet its repayment obligations. A report before city council this week presented three options in terms of getting

the money back. The city could demand the money back; defer the loan for six months with three per cent interest added each month or hold back $25,000 from RCD’s annual $110,000 operating fund it gets from the city. City council decided to defer the loan for six months, with the three per cent interest added each month until the loan is repaid. — Alan Campbell, Richmond News

Continued from page 3 One of the burning issues in Richmond and across the province over the last year was school districts facing massive cash deficits in their budgets, not least Richmond’s $5 million shortfall, resulting in painful cuts to staff and resources. Abbott admits there are many challenges still being faced by school districts across B.C. and it’s something that would be high on his agenda, should he win the party leadership race. “Over the course of the last decade, the student numbers have dropped by 56,000,” he said. “From a government perspective, every year we’ve bumped up the funding. But it still does represent a challenge and there is still continuing discussion. “My priority there would be to work with all the partners in the school system. But I do recognize that the funding is one of the challenges facing school districts.” Halsey-Brandt — who nailed his colours to Raymond Chan’s mast when

Former MLAs Olga Ilich and Greg Halsey-Brandt flank the man they hope will fly the flag for the B.C. Liberals, George Abbott. Chan ran unsuccessfully against Alice Wong in the last federal election — said he’s backing Abbott after he warmed to his problemsolving nature while working alongside him during the first Campbell government. “I liked the way he approached problems and I guess I’m closer to his way of thinking than any of the other candidates,” HalseyBrandt said. “I think it’s very important for a good relationship between municipalities and the province and I think George would help that.” Ilich, who worked with

Abbott in Victoria from 2005 to 2009, considers Abbott as possessing several traits worthy of leading the party and the province. “One of the most important things for a premier to have is an ability to consult with people and listen to the experts,” she said. “He’s has to work with a lot of very difficult portfolios and has done so without any major problems. He’s a very inclusive person and is consensus building.” The B.C. Liberal Party leadership race will be decided Feb. 26 by an inparty membership vote.

City mulls new noise bylaw

DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL

in 2009. A total of 349 noise complaints were received during the six months, including a 25 per cent spike in construction-related issues; 33 per cent rise on residential neighbours; 100 per cent increase on industrial noise and a 29 per cent hike in special event complaints. According to the report, the significant increase in noise complaints in Richmond is mainly due to the city’s burgeoning urban sprawl edging closer to commercial and industrial sites. As such, an up to date and more technically sensitive noise bylaw is required to deal with new issues. An acoustic consultant was hired last year by the city to come up with possible changes, that have now been inserted into the proposed revised bylaw. These include: World Health Organization guidelines; a more accurate reading of “continuous sound” to make it easier to enforce; a “point of reception,” where the sound disturbance is measured from a prescribed distance; low frequency sound;

and sound characteristics, including penalties for tones and impulsiveness. The report’s author, city bylaw manager Wayne Mercer, said the proposed bylaw “will be stricter,” adding that a significant public participation program is required to educate people and businesses to the possible changes ahead. This will take the form of published notices in the media, open houses, online surveys and workshops.

Alzheimer’s Foundation International on Tour

This important organization is travelling the world to find what various countries are doing to treat their populations suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s diseases, in order to gather resources and share them. Recently, the AFI came to Israel, to study a new computer game (called Savyon) developed by researchers. The game requires patients to build a circle with three pieces. It is designed to maintain and improve memory in Alzheimer’s patients. It will not cure the disease but will slow its progression. An organization called Melabev operates ten day care centres across Israel, offering day patients treatments in a variety of languages, to allow for afflicted persons who tend to revert to their mother tongue. Eric Hall, President of the AFI, calls Alzheimer’s and dementia “crises” given the rate of growth of numbers of afflicted persons. In countries where life expectancy is high (such as Canada), it could reach the pandemic stage, so all research being attempted in the world now is significant.

The City of Richmond is going to the people to press its ear to the ground on the new proposed noise pollution bylaw. The frailties and inability of the city’s current noise regulation bylaw — which was last updated 11 years ago — to deal with modern noise pollutions and a rapidly growing Richmond rose to the surface last year. On several occasions, Richmond Public Health and the city were asked to look into serious noise complaints, directly related to the increased urbanization of Richmond. The city will now enter into a public participation program this spring in an effort to explain the intricacies of a new stricter noise bylaw and will obtain feedback via open houses and online surveys. Most notable among last year’s issues were the longrunning disputes between Andrews Road residents and True World Foods in Steveston and between

Caithcart Road residents and the Shark Club in Bridgeport. Both groups of residents were represented at this week’s meeting, expressing their ongoing concern about noise issues. During the meeting, the acoustic consultant, hired by the city last year to examine the problems, demonstrated the differences in decibels from certain sound sources and the effect of a powerful base beat. After the meeting, Coun Greg Halsey-Brandt told the News that he believes a big part of the problem is when a larger noise source goes head to head with a residential area. “If you have a noisy area next to a moderately noisy area, then there’s not much of a problem,” he said. “But when you have something like the Andrews Road area next to the Shark Club, there’s a big difference.” Indeed, a report placed before city council this week revealed that noise complaints fielded by the health department for the last six months of 2010 skyrocketed compared to the same period

Harry Jerome’s life story captured on film World renowned sprinter struggled with media scrutiny, racism in 1960s BY MICHELLE HOPKINS

mhopkins@richmond-news.com

Dr. Doug Clement vividly remembers the first time he met one of the province’s most remarkable athletes, sprinter Harry Jerome. The year was 1959. A world-class runner himself, Clement had just graduated from medical school and Jerome had just graduated from high school, when they met in a tuxedo shop. “Both of us were getting suits for our graduation ceremonies and somehow we started talking about track and field,” said Clement, whom the Minoru track is named after. The two young men had more in common than they realized at the time, and their lives soon intertwined. “After Jerome graduated from the

University of Oregon he came back to Vancouver and trained with our club, the Richmond Kajaks, during the early days, around 1962,” said Clement. “He ended up teaching high school in Richmond.” (Jerome taught math and sciences at Richmond secondary from 1964 to 1965.) Clement will be at Richmond City Hall on Thursday, Feb. 17, for the showing of the documentary movie about Jerome’s private and public life, titled Mighty Jerome. “I will be introducing the film and I will talk during the proceedings as well,” said Clement, who is also featured in the film. “The film is an accurate portrayal of his life and the racism he endured during those times,” said Clement. “I think viewers will take away

from the film its historical significance. “I also think it will show young people just how much progress we’ve made in five decades.” At one point, Jerome was celebrated as the fastest man on the planet, holding seven different world records, including simultaneous world records in both the 100-yard and 100 metres races. But life for the young black man in B.C. in the early sixties was anything but easy, says Clement. “When Harry was winning he was cheered,” said Clement. “At 19, Jerome broke the 100 metres world record at the Pan Am Games and won a gold at the Commonwealth Games, but when he injured himself at the Rome Olympics see Film page 9

Dr. Doug Clement, who is also an acclaimed runner, met the young Harry Jerome just after the sprinter graduated from high school.

“Harry was shy and many in the media took that as arrogance.” The 84-minute film explores the turbulent life and career of the record-setting icon through rare footage capturing Jerome racing. “CBC covered a lot of Harry’s races so we have quite a bit of footage. Viewers gets a real sense of the man himself,” Jacob said. “There’s also an interview with his high school track coach, John Minichiello, his good friend Paul Wynn, his ex-wife Wendy and daughter Debbie.” The movie is more of a human interest story, Jacob said, adding he will be in Richmond for the screening of the film, where he will take part in a Q & A. “We restaged certain sequences of his life such as when Harry and Wendy met at the University of Oregon, the racism they endured as a bi-racial couple, to when they had their daughter Debbie in 1963, through to an interview with Debbie herself.” In honour of Black History month, DOXA Documentary Film Festival’s movie Mighty Jerome plays on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Richmond City Hall Chambers, 6911 No. 3 Rd. in 1960, the media jumped all over him calling him a quitter … he faced an antagonistic media throughout his career.” Jerome retired in 1969, after a decadelong career spent dodging negative press. As an Afro-Canadian, award-winning producer Selwyn Jacob could relate to Jerome. Like Jerome, Jacob loved track and field and was an educator before becoming a filmmaker in the mid-eighties. He had long been fascinated by Harry Jerome’s life. “Track and field was huge in Trinidad and we always had world class athletes from around the world come to compete,” said Jacob. “One day, we heard there was a Canadian coming and it was an anomaly back in the sixties… we had never heard of a world-class sprinter who came from Canada. “It was Harry and when I immigrated to Canada in 1968 I became even more curious about him.” In 1997, he became a filmmaker and vowed to one day to feature Jerome in a documentary. “I felt that Harry deserved a film about him outside of athletics as well as his successes as an athlete,” said Jacob. “Harry was represented unfairly as an athlete in the press and this film was an opportunity to right a wrong.” The National Film Board optioned a book about Jerome by author Fil Fraser titled Running Uphill. They hired Jacob and director Charles Officer to tell Jerome’s story of triumph, tragedy, controversy and racial discrimination in a documentary. In April 2009, Jacob began working on the production with Officer. In one scene it shows footage of Jerome in 1962 in Perth, Australia, for the Commonwealth Games. It was there that he suffered a full torn quadricep. Doctors told him he would never run again. “Right away, the press jumped on him and one reporter wrote that he was incapable of running on the world stage,” said Jacob. Jerome made a stunning comeback from that severely torn quad muscle to win a medal two years later in Tokyo. “In the movie we interview nine of his closest friends who all said Harry was a good and caring person,” added Jacob. “When the press slammed him, it evoked strong emotions for him.

The news that B.C. Ferries CEO David Hahn is touting major fare hikes barely two months after eliminating its fuel “rebates” and increasing prices has angered travellers and sparked another round of comments about the depth of the feather bed on which Hahn reclines to do his job. But while it is always tempting to mock public figureheads who earn extremely high salaries, it is important to remember that the empire Hahn is responsible for has always received direct government subsidy. Hahn’s gloomy predictions last week of fare increases for the four years from 2012 to 2016 in the range of 20 per cent on major routes, 50 per cent on minor ones and more than 100 per cent on northern routes will only come true if our provincial government chooses not to increase its subsidy. That subsidy of $92 million has not been increased since 2003, although additional subsidies for the northern routes were added in 2008. The federal government also contributes to funding those particular routes: last year, that was $27 million. Shaking down Hahn and other top ferry executives might feel good to taxpayers, but clearly the dollar amounts needed to fund the present levels of service are much more than are going to be found in any cost-cutting review. Without subsidy increases, the alternatives are only fare increases or less service. Hahn was right to run these distress flags up his ship’s flagpole. It’s up to our future political leaders to revisit this debate, not shoot the messenger. — North Shore News editorial

The Editor, Re: “Chinese contribution ignored: Society,” News, Feb. 4. As a third generation Canadian, Anglo, visible white minority living in Richmond, I am offended by the context of this article. It seems whenever a particular interest group decides to whine loudly enough, there is front page media coverage regarding how the group involved feels slighted by either Canadian history or non-immigrant Canadians or not having had enough thanks or apologies for decades past events. I am tired, sick and tired, of hearing this garbage from ethnic groups who seem to have an exaggerated sense of what their contribution has been to Canada. My ancestors came to this great country as poor immigrants. They struggled to make homes for their families, they adopted the Canadian lifestyle and ways, they worked long and hard at their chosen employments and yes ... they contributed HUGELY to the infrastructure and building of this province through their hard work and dedication to their new country. The descendants of hundreds of thousands of European/U.K. immigrants have not complained because their grandparents or great grandparents have not been heaped with recognition. In those early days of immigration it was simply expected that you contributed to the growth of your chosen new country. Canada was built by millions of people, of all backgrounds, their hard work and their efforts towards making Canada the wonderful free and desirable country it is today. No single group need childishly complain to the rest of the Canadian population that they haven’t been recognized enough for their efforts. We are team players here in Canada and I would appreciate not having to read any more bellyaching articles from these special interest groups . J.E. Hillier Richmond

Cycling lanes would add sanity Cyclists are not entirely sane. Sure, green transport, zero emissions, healthy lifestyle, fresh air, blah blah blah. If you’re only a driver, not a cyclist of any description, try to imagine willingly getting up in the morning, sitting atop a narrow metal frame that balances on two wheels, and rolling out into traffic. Drivers are protected by a shell of metal and safety glass, augmented by crumple zones, air bags, seat belts, traction control, and anti-lock power brakes. Cyclists have hand brakes, helmets made of foam and plastic, and gloves designed to keep the skin on our hands in the event of a crash. And yet, on the last Saturday in January, I got up and put on several layers of spandex and rain gear and pedalled my way around half of Langley. I don’t even have the excuse of using it for commuting, I did this because I needed the exercise, and I had been craving a good long bike ride for a couple of months. Along the way, I passed a few other riders, barely glimpsed through the rain beaded on my glasses: another spandex-clad lunatic like myself (although he was going noticeably faster) and a few of the Mexican farmworkers who can be seen in all weather, running errands or visiting friends around the community. I also ran into a couple of members of the Greater

Matthew Claxton PAINFUL TRUTH

Langley Cycling Coalition, out cleaning up garbage along Zero Avenue. The club has adopted the street, to demonstrate its importance to cyclists not only in Langley, but from around the Lower Mainland. On a nice weekend, you can see dozens of them zipping by there every hour. Their passage will be interrupted every now and again by a large dump truck whipping by, or a goon in a sports car who screams barely audible curses. I’ve never personally had things thrown at me from moving cars, but it’s not unheard of. After I got home, while I waited for the feeling to return to my toes, I thought about the argument against more bike lanes that you often hear from drivers these days. Cyclists are reckless. They’re crazy. They weave in and out of traffic. They jump on and off of sidewalks. They cause car accidents and ride off. So why give cyclists better bike lanes? Surely they’ll just abuse them. Some cyclists are reckless. But as with drivers, it’s a small minority giving a large majority a bad reputation.

Think about it this way: as a driver in Vancouver, Surrey, Richmond, Langley, if you drive through the downtown areas, you will see cyclists. Those who obey the rules of the road quickly slip from your memory. It’s the lunatics that cut across your path that you remember. But it’s the same with drivers. You don’t remember the hundreds or thousands of cars you pass on your drive to work. You remember that idiot texting while steering a minivan with his knees, or the woman who cut across three lanes without signalling. The other reason why drivers see more reckless cyclists than they should is simple: it’s too dangerous for the sane riders. If it’s reckless to ride, the only riders will be reckless. If on my bike, I will go far out of my way around certain roads, as I have no wish to be rendered two-dimensional under the wheels of a cube van. But as a driver on those same roads, I regularly see people doing things on bikes that make me wince. If we get more bike lanes, more marked roads and separated paths, and secure bike parking, we’ll get more riders, increasing the pool that drivers see who are sane. Relatively sane, of course. We’re still cyclists. Anyone up for a threehour ride in the rain? Matthew Claxton is a reporter with News’s sister paper the Langley Advance.

Preserving and promoting any ethnic group’s participation in B.C.’s history is accomplished by working together, sharing stories, pictures, historical events, etc., not by demands, veiled political threats and pitting one ethnic group against another. Last year the Richmond Museum mounted a wonderful exhibit on Steveston’s Hong Wo store and the important part it played in the history of Steveston and the fishing industry. Many in the Chinese community work with their local museum and archives to assist in the preservation of their family’s part in local history. By working with museums, archives, educational groups, etc., the interesting and exciting histories of all ethnic groups can become part of the school’s curriculum to improve and include more British Columbia history. The B.C. Historical Federation and other historical groups have been working closely with the History Education Network at UBC, an organization devoted to promoting — and improving — history teaching and learning by bringing together the multiple and varied constituencies involved in history education. There is much we can do collectively to ensure B.C.’s history includes all its residents, ethnic groups, pioneers, etc., who are equally part of our province’s history. Mr. Chu is invited to participate with the many groups and historical societies to be part of the solution to ensure B.C.’s history is as complete as possible by working together with a positive approach. The Editor, Re: “Chinese Contribution Ignored: Society,” News, Feb. 4. Richmond school trustee Chak Au took a more teamwork approach of doing more to include what Chinese and other minority groups have done for the province. Bill Chu is shair of the Canadians for Reconciliation, which expresses its concerns that Asians’ role in history should be better recognized in the school curriculum. Mr. Chu’s confrontational approach is to force Richmond MLAs to demand more recognition for their Chinese constituents and to “force” each of the NDP and Liberal party leadership candidates to sign and pledge more acknowledgement of Chinese history and undoubtedly issue a recap in the media of who signed and pledged and who didn’t. The majority of Richmond’s Chinese residents have been in British Columbia less than 10 to 15 years — hardly a concern about the participation in history by the current Chinese community. It hardly justifies the demands put upon Richmond’s MLAs. What about the many other groups from India, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, the Netherlands, etc.? They are also part of Richmond’s and B.C.’s history and should be recognized. The British Columbia Historical Federation has worked with many ethnic groups and has published numerous articles in the British Columbia History journal about the early Chinese businessmen, settlers, merchants, miners, etc. The Chinese Canadian Historical Society, in Vancouver, is a member of the BCHF and has contributed stories and histories of the Chinese in B.C.

Honour your heart by listening to warning signs The Editor, We invite people from Richmond to recognize and become involved in the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Heart Month this February. Heart disease and stroke are two of the three leading causes of death for Canadians, cutting the lives of Canadians short. But you can save lives this Heart Month, by: ❚ Donating online: heartandstroke.bc.ca;

❚ Giving generously when a canvasser comes to your door or contacts you online; ❚ Learning about the preventable risk factors for heart disease and stroke. Visit heartandstroke.bc.ca for more information. Since 1955, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation have facilitated: ❚ Research on the development and use of the implantable pacemaker;

❚ Clot-busting drugs that can erase the effects of a stroke after it’s happened; ❚ Pioneering the artificial heart for transplant patients; ❚ Developing and updating guidelines for resuscitation (CPR); ❚ Public awareness of stroke signs and heart attack warning signals: Signs of a heart attack ❚ Chest pain or discomfort ❚ Pain in arm, neck, jaw or back ❚ Sweating

❚ Nausea ❚ Difficult breathing Signs of a Stroke ❚ Weakness, numbness ❚ Trouble speaking ❚ Vision problems ❚ Severe headache ❚ Dizziness To date, the Heart and Stroke Foundation has funded $1 billion in support of Canadian research, with more than $100 million going to B.C. researchers. The results of many years

of diligence, determination and perseverance on the part of world-class researchers and scientists are coming back to our communities. With your help, we are continuing to learn more about heart disease and stroke and moving closer to a future with generations free of heart disease and stroke. B. Fremantle prison houses a dark history BY MIKE GRENBY Postmedia News

FREMANTLE, Australia — You don’t often get to tour a maximum-security prison that captures Australia’s convict history and yet still housed offenders less than 20 years ago. Getting up close and personal with the hangman’s noose leaves an indelible impression — fortunately now only in the mind and not on the neck. The first convicts, originally from England, arrived in 1850 as a labour force to build the infrastructure for the Swan

River Colony based in nearby Perth, here in Western Australia. One of their first projects was the Convict Establishment, later called Fremantle Prison and used as a maximumsecurity prison until 1991. Prisoners who attempted to escape were flogged and locked in solitary confinement on a diet of bread and water. There were 12 punishment cells and six windowless “dark” cells. Stays in solitary were between one and six months. After 1886, solitary sentences were restricted to a maximum of 28 days. Continued on page 16

Difficult convicts were often sentenced up to 100 lashes. Flogging instruments included the cat-o’nine-tails, a whip with nine knotted strands or cords, and the birch, a bundle of long birch twigs bound together by cord. The last flogging with the cat-o’nine-tails occurred in 1943 when a prisoner received 25 lashes. A prisoner received 12 strokes of the birch in 1962. Corporal punishment and hard labour were finally abolished in 1993, two years after Fremantle Prison shut down. Tried and convicted for murder, serial killer Eric Edgar Cooke was hanged at Fremantle Prison in 1964, the last man to face capital punishment in Western Australia. The prison is now a popular, award-winning tourist attraction, offering several tours: Doing Time,

Great Escapes, Tunnels and Torchlight. The trap door beneath the hangman’s noose still drops, activated by a lever on the platform nearby. With a population of only 25,000, historic Fremantle nevertheless has a lively cafe nightlife as well as beaches which, along with others up and down the coast, have had their share of Australia’s shark attacks and fatalities — some occurring close to shore. However, Australia averages only one shark fatality a year (usually on par with the U.S.) compared to, in 2005 for example, three deaths from bee stings. Still, according to the W.A. department of fisheries, “most of the 100 or more shark species that occur in W.A. waters are capable of injuring humans and all species, no matter how small, should be left alone.” W.A. fronts the Indian Ocean and accounts for more than one-third of Australia’s total 34,000kilometre coastline. It’s closer to Bali in Indonesia

than to Australia’s major centres such as Sydney on the east coast. Perth, a city of 1.7 million, is on the Swan River, a 15-minute drive from a string of sand-and-surf ocean beaches. Perth is slower and quieter than its east-coast sisters. But both the city and the state are enjoying an economic and population boom, thanks to growth in the mining sector. Wineries also abound, both in the Swan Valley near Perth and in the Margaret River region in the state’s far southwest corner. I started my visit to Australia’s west coast at the two-bedroom Roselyn Cottage, (www.cattonhall. com.au) on six hectares in the Perth Hills. Either Trevor Pexton, 69, or his wife Felicity, 65, welcome you with a warm and fragrant loaf of freshly baked bread to go with the plate of cheese, ham, pickles, olives and fruit - and a bottle of champagne. You prepare your breakfast when you want it and that will include a fresh loaf of bread baked daily.

The Pextons no longer serve meals the way they did when they ran a farmstay program on their 20hectare racehorse breeding property, so you can cook for yourself or dine at the award-winning Loose Box restaurant (loosebox.com. au) in nearby Mundaring village. Chef-owner Alan Fabregues flies in the butter and par-baked/ frozen baguettes from France. The day after I arrived, Felicity asked: “Would you like to join our Happy Wanderers bushwalking group?” So off we went - most of the folks ranging in age from their 60s to their 80s, yet fitter than many people far younger. Several walkers had brought along gauze fly nets, but I made do with the Australian salute: regularly waving my hand across the front of my face to scatter the flies, which, at least, don’t bite. Trauma: Group works hard to makes dogs’ lives better “Chaining is illegal in Richmond although penning isn’t,” says Savkovic, “and both are harmful to the dog and to the people who have to witness this cruelty.” Marion Hewko is the Canadian representative and contact for Dogs Deserve Better (DDB), an international organization dedicated to educating the public about the cruelty to chained and penned dogs. In addition to advocacy work through local shelters, Hewko and other area representatives for the organization work to help owners understand how awful life is for a dog on a chain. Hewko works to form a relationship with owners of dogs who are reported to be living life on a chain or always penned in a yard. She says that so many people don’t realize the emotional and physical trauma they are causing their dog, and Dogs Deserve Better helps owners understand the need to bring the dog into the family and “break the chain” of isolation and abuse. But a handful of representatives can’t

address the issue of chained and penned dogs alone. DDB depends on neighbours, friends and family, or passersby to report a chained or penned dog in distress. In Richmond, you can call the Richmond Animal Shelter at 604-275-2036. If you see an incident of a chained dog, write down as much information as you can about the address and conditions. If you have a cellphone or camera, take a video to document the situation so that an animal control officer or a representative from DDB can get in contact with the owner and ultimately help the dog. While we may not be able to help those sled dogs now that they are gone, we can certainly make every effort to help every dog in distress in Richmond. If you want to do more to help chained or penned dogs, visit the Dogs Deserve Better website at www.dogsdeservebetter.com. The New Year that Mazda5 buyers are already celebrating is 2012. Yes, Mazda has skipped the 2011 model year entirely and early buyers of the new 2012 edition of its Mazda5 get what amounts to a bonus year as a current-year vehicle. Mazda has had the smaller six-seat passenger van market to itself in recent years, which is a little surprising as they are very popular in Europe. Any direct competition, remember the Nissan Access, has disappeared as cross-utility vehicles in various forms have been the centre of attention for its auto maker rivals. That said, while it looks and acts like a small minivan, Mazda5 is actually classified as a compact car/ wagon, and it’s based on the Mazda3 platform. This also means that it conforms to the higher regulatory safety requirements of a car — it’s a subtle yet important difference. In addition to its obvious advantages of having a smaller vehicle when it comes to parking and general use in a busy urban setting, the Mazda5 offers excellent fuel economy. Powered by a new 2.5litre, four-cylinder engine that produces 157 horsepower (replacing a 153-h.p., 2.3-litre). A new 6-speed manual transmission is standard and a 5-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission is optional ($1,200). The 2012 Mazda5 is offered in two trim levels, GS and GT. The base retail price is $21,795 and for that you get a well equipped van with climate control air conditioning, power windows, locks and mirrors and a tilt and telescopic steering

wheel with audio controls. There’s an optional Convenience Package that includes Bluetooth handsfree connectivity, cruise control, trip computer, leather wrapped steering wheel and anti-theft alarm system for $845. The top-line Mazda5 GT adds 17-inch alloy wheels, a body package with side sill extensions, fog lights, heated front seats with lumbar support on the driver side, heated side mirrors, an audio upgrade and Xenon headlights for $24,395. A luxury package upgrade for the GT includes power moonroof, leather seats and a fold-out second-row table for another $1,790. Mazda5 is a smart and affordable transportation idea with appeal beyond young family minivan buyers, as it’s also popular with mature buyers. And there’s a growing pool of these empty nesters and early retirees.

The looks

The feedback that Mazda received from current Mazda5 owners (going into the 2012 redesign) was very clear — don’t change the basic concept, don’t make it bigger and keep the rear sliding doors. While its basic shape and dimensions are unchanged the new styling theme was inspired by its nagare design culture, which means “flow” in Japanese. It’s most evident along the side panels, where swirling body creases have a sculpted by the wind appearance that adds to an overall sense of motion. The dual sliding side doors are designed to provide an ultra-light user feel with a very easy (single finger) movement. Up font, it now sports the happyface first seen on the new see Engine page 23

Engine: Better performance, fuel efficiency Continued from page 22 Mazda3. At the back, it has a more-sculpted fascia with revised tail lights that wrap into the side panel and partially hide the hinge slot for the sliding door. The styling changes apparently do improve the overall aerodynamic efficiency (drag coefficient of 0.30) of Mazda5, which also translates into less drag and optimal lift characteristics at highway speeds.

The inside

Inside it remains as spacious as before and comes with three rows of flexible seating for six. The seating is tiered (theatre style) to give all occupants better forward vision. The third row is designed as an occasional use seating position that flows flat when not in use. The seats configured for two, three, four, five or six passengers, or up to 857-litres of cargo space. A low profile fuel tank and a compact multi-link rear suspension allow good leg-

room for those sitting in the second and third rows.

Safety

In addition to a standard electronic stability control system the Mazda5 comes with dual front and side airbags for first row passengers and side air curtains that protect occupants in all three rows of seats. The 2012 Mazda5 also comes with brake override a system that prioritizes the brake application over the gas pedal. If both pedals are accidentally pressed at the same time, the brakes will stop the vehicle.

The drive

You really have to drive the Mazda5 to get a full appreciation of the finer points of this great little vehicle. It certainly provides a more entertaining and enjoyable driving experience when compared to a conventional minivan. It starts with a great driving position that’s more car-like and an instrument panel directly in front, yet you’re seated higher. Taller

than average drivers may have an issue with legroom. Driver sight lines are generally very good with special thanks to a large back window and big side mirrors, although a backup camera would still be helpful. The front seats are bucket style with manual adjustments and excellent side support to hold you firmly in place if you test the surprisingly capable handling limits of the Mazda5. A highlight of the new Mazda5 is undoubtedly the new MRZ 2.5-litre engine that offers higher performance yet better fuel efficiency than the previous see Mazda5 page 24

The low to mid range torque provided is excellent and it peeks at 163 ft.-lb. and 4,000 r.p.m. It gives the new Mazda5 a linear, competent feel on acceleration and a more relaxed driving experience. My test Mazda5 came with the five-speed electronically controlled automatic, which also provides manual shift control. This transmission features Mazda’s Active lb. adaptive Shift protocol first used on the RX-8 sports car. Partthrottle downshifts can be made with a quick nudge of the gas pedal and when the car is braked aggressively the transmission also downshifts to also provide engine braking and a quicker exit from a bend. While the new Mazda5 uses the same suspension system as the previous generation with minor teaks, the spring rates have been increased to improve straight-line stability at highway speeds. Lorraine Wilson KEEP IT SIMPLE

than that. Perhaps you have lost your job, you’re sick, you’ve lost a loved one and you’re grieving. These situations are very real, but the mind can also play a role in this by producing thoughts that make us believe something in our life is real, when it is just an illusion. So what to do? Notice the difference between reality and illusion and then accept that we cannot argue with reality — it’s futile to try to do so; it is what it is. We can’t change the fact that someone we loved has died,

we can’t change the fact that we are suffering with an illness of some kind, but what we can do is make a choice of how we will be with that reality and love ourselves in this place. When we become mindful about what is occurring in our life and accept the reality of our situation, the suffering created from resisting it appears to subside. Remember, what you resist persists and what you embrace you erase. I am not suggesting that any of us like the feeling of loss and pain, but acknowledging that it is present and letting it ‘be’ is an option. My experience has been that when we speak the truth about our reality, it begins to have less power because we have consciously acknowledged what is.

We can also contemplate our reality by asking the question “is it true?” When you are mindful and aware, you may be shocked to discover a situation in your life is simply an illusion. Be mindful, meet everything as it arises, let go of time frames about when it should change or disappear. Lorraine facilitates mindfulness meetings every Tuesday. How do you consciously meet the reality of your life? Do you tell the truth to yourself about your reality or do you resist it? Are you willing to be open to the reality of your life 100 per cent and notice what it triggers in your being? Each day the landscape of our life changes and we find ourselves in a new place of reality. More often than not we tend to resist the aspects of the realities of life that are unpleasant to deal with, and as a result, we find ourselves in a place of suffering. So what is reality, really? Let’s keep it simple: if it’s raining, it’s raining. If your car has broken down, the reality is your car isn’t working. Or in this moment, your reality may be somewhat deeper

VALENTINE’S DAY

Relationships really do matter It is the season of love. In the grocery store I am accosted by pink and purple hearts and roses. But beyond all the consumerism, Valentine’s Day is an important holiday. It gives us reason to pause, to look up from the crises of our everyday lives, and to think about the quality of our relationships.

Sarah Dakin BABY STEPS

Research has shown that one of the best indicators of happiness is not money or

house size, but the quality of our connections to other people. Loving relationships are important, but they are also hard. Our continent’s divorce rate speaks to the pain and failure in which many relationships end. In our fast-paced society, rushing and trying to do too much encourages us to build

up psychological armour. This protects us from the emotional bumps and bruises we face each day, but it also makes it hard to let others into our lives. “How are you?” a friend asks, and we reply with “Fine thanks, and you?” but then we rush off, missing a chance to really connect. see Love page 27

Continued from page 26 But when we do take off our armour and open up, it is easy to get hurt. I often feel like my husband and I are two cats thrown in a burlap sack and tossed in a ditch. As we struggle to keep our heads above water, we end up scratching each other. It is hard for me to remember that he is not trying to be hurtful. I remind myself of what I call the Subaru effect. Have you ever had the experience where you bought a new car, and suddenly you start seeing that type of car everywhere? A few years ago when my husband and I bought a Subaru and I found myself say to everyone “did you just see that — ANOTHER Subaru!” I was amazed. Where did all these Subarus come from? I knew the types of cars on the road had not changed overnight, but my perspective sure had. That “Subaru effect” is really important to keep in mind when we are dealing with other people. When I

am feeling like my husband is a jerk, I see all the things he does that annoy me. On the other hand, when I am feeling positive about him, I start seeing all the great stuff he is doing. His behaviour is always a mix of great things and annoying things, but what changes is the lens through which I am filtering what I see. If he puts laundry on and I am happy with him, I think “how great, he is doing laundry. What a kind and considerate man.” If I am angry at him, I think, “there he goes, overloading the dryer again, and it makes the clothes all wrinkly — he never listens!” He could even bring me flowers when I am really angry at him, and all I would think is “Not roses again! He has no imagination!” Obviously, those two different ways of seeing him, lead to different actions. In the first case, I might give him a kiss on the cheek. In the second, I might glower at him angrily. What a difference my internal thoughts

have on how we interact. We need to actively focus on the positive and see others in the best light possible. As you bump up against the people in your life in the inevitable little conflicts all relationships entail, remember to give them the MRI (Most Respectful Interpretation). She is not ignoring you, she is just tired and overwhelmed. He did not mean to cut you off, he just didn’t see you. Actively look for and acknowledge the positives in your relationships. A little appreciation and compassion can work wonders. You may or may not be participating in swapping chocolates or Valentines cards this week, but you can participate in Valentine’s Day’s true meaning of loving kindness. We could all use a little more love and connection in our lives. Sarah Dakin is a Richmond mother of three who sometimes forgets what a wonderful man she married. LOVE STORY

Singles event was a night to remember “I always had a list of what I wanted in a guy,” she said. “When I was rushed to the hospital and I saw how Paul showed such concern and care for me, it was like someone hit me with a brick … I realized he was the one for me.” Meanwhile, both agree that meeting at Single’s Mingle in Steveston was similar to attending a cocktail party. “It was a great way to meet because it wasn’t uncomfortable and either one of us could leave if we wanted too,” said Berg. “There was no pressure and both of us went without any preconceived notions.” Kallio agrees: “It was so much easier attending that event than computer dating,” he said, and Berg quickly added: “And it’s not like going to a bar where you don’t know whether they are married or not.” Dating when you are in your forties or fifties is a far cry from when you date in your twenties, both said. For Kallio, a father of two teens, dating after 20 years out of the game, was weird. Berg, who was only married briefly in her twenties, was tired of the “game.” “I’ve been single for 17 years and in that time I’ve only had one serious relationship, which lasted five years,” she said. “I thought I really knew what I wanted in a man and I was wrong … Paul is so much more.”

V

alerie Berg had tried everything to meet her “prince charming.” The attractive 49-year-old tried speed dating, Internet dating, It’s Just Lunch, as well as letting friends set her up. The single mother of a 20-year-old son was done with dating. “I hadn’t felt a spark for someone in a long time, to the point where I could see myself with the person for the rest of my life,” said Berg. However, on the urging of her sister, she attended the Single’s Mingle soiree in Steveston last June. June Miller created Single’s Mingle in Steveston in April. As a single herself, Miller wanted to create a fun and comfortable monthly event for singles to meet other singles — ages 40 to 60. “I wasn’t looking to meet anyone, but it did cross my mind that if it did happen it would be nice,” said Berg, who is a realtor in White Rock. As the night worn on, Berg enjoyed getting to meet some of the 50 attendees, but as far as making a love connection — nothing, until she was heading to the door to leave. Paul Kallio noticed Berg earlier but had been nervous about approaching her. But when the 53-year-old Air Canada pilot saw that she was leaving, his friend urged him to go say hello. “When I saw Valerie, I felt like I was 20 again. I saw her eyes, and I immediately felt a spark,” said Kallio. He went over and introduced himself and they chatted for a few minutes. Berg admits she didn’t feel any spark initially, but she liked him enough to give him her business card. “I told her I’d give her a call if I was

going to sell my house,” he said with a grin. “My buddies told me to wait 48 hours to call her.” Kallio first heard about Single’s Mingle when he bumped into an old colleague who told him about the event. “I have been separated for three and a half years and I had tried Plenty of Fish (Internet dating) and E-Harmony without making a real connection with anyone,” he

said. “I felt I had nothing to lose, so I went with a few friends.” Kallio and Berg’s first date lasted seven hours. Although Berg had reservations at first — he lived more than an hour’s drive from her and had younger children than her — she realized that they had a lot in common. And it wasn’t until nearly three months of dating that Berg realized she was deeply in love with Kallio.

Kirsten Degenhardt & Keiran Flaherty

The Sweet Spot, Steveston STORY BY MICHELLE HOPKINS • PHOTO BY CHUNG CHOW

Thanks to a Catholic cleric called Valentine and Pope Gelasius I, who in 500 AD declared Feb. 14th Valentine’s Day, that date has long been associated with love and romance. Typically, it’s a day when lovers declare their undying love with flowers and chocolates.

How would you like to surprise your special Valentine with some decadent Bittersweet Chocolate Mousse Hearts that you created yourself? The News asked partners in life and business, pastry chef Kirsten Degenhardt and executive chef Keiran

Flaherty for the recipe.

Sweet Spot in Steveston.

Their love story is one that blossomed in a kitchen. In 2008, Flaherty was the executive chef at The Opus Hotel, an acclaimed chic boutique hotel downtown, when Degenhardt was hired as the pastry chef. Today, the two own and operate The

Both come with years of experience in some of most renowned kitchens in the country; most notably she at the world class Windsor Arms Hotel, Toronto, and he at Vancouver’s award-winning West Restaurant. Here is the recipe.

BITTERSWEET CHOCOLATE MOUSSE HEARTS INGREDIENTS: 235 grams (8.29 ounces) dark chocolate (64 per cent) 1 whole egg 4 egg yolks 95 grams (3.35 ounces) sugar 340 ml (1 ½ cup) whipping cream

METHOD: Melt chocolate over a double boiler until warm. Whip the cream until soft peaks form. Using an electric mixer with a whisk attachment, whip the egg and egg yolks until thick and pale yellow. In a small pot, combine sugar with a couple of tablespoons of water. Over high heat, cook the sugar until it reaches 118 C on a candy thermometer. Remove from heat. Slowly and carefully, while the machine is still running, drizzle the hot sugar syrup down the inside of the bowl into the eggs. Let the machine continue to whip on high speed until the bowl feels slightly cool to the touch. Remove the bowl from the mixer and add the chocolate, folding quickly so the chocolate does not set. Fold in the whipped cream gently so as not to deflate the air, and pour into glasses or moulds — preferably hearts. Chill at least four hours before enjoying! P.S. If you would rather purchase these mousse hearts, The Sweet Spot in Steveston will only have them available for sale on Monday, Feb. 14, but there will be boxed chocolates and truffles for the weekend as well. For more information, call the Sweet Spot at 604-271-8865 or visit, www.thesweetspotbakery.ca.

I had the opportunity to interview Deborra Hope an established Global news anchor who shared with me her passion for running. With a busy schedule balancing work and family life, she manages the time to fit in her workout every morning. “I run in the mornings with my golden retriever and I call it jogging, she laughs. “The pace can get quite slow when I meet with my friends and the talking begins.” The key to running for Hope is to keep fit. Racing isn’t part of her life, but rather the enjoyment of being out there. Her training takes her into the Port Moody area and she runs daily from 2025 up to 45 minutes. I asked her what she

thinks about while she is running. “On a great day — if it’s just me and the pup, I just love to look around while I run (taking care not to trip on a rock or a tree stump!) — it’s so beautiful. Often

Deborra Hope

I’m with my friends - and can we talk! Other days I’m thinking about work - or where our next family vacation may take place. There’s always something going on! “On weekends, my husband Roger often comes with me. It’s great for us to catch up on our busy weekdays. He’s a news cameraman, so he’s constantly driv-

ing all over the south coast and shooting stories. It’s nice for him to unwind with a jog through the woods as well.” Sometimes her group has encountered bears and wearing a bell has become necessary along their route. Hope caught the running bug at 18 when she attended UBC and has continued with her fitness, even when on holidays. “When my husband I are on vacation we do long walks up to one hour,” she added. When asked about any running idols she may have, Hope said she was inspired by a 72-year-old woman runner who was once on her show. Hope is host of the Early News on Global Television. Richmond resident Christine Blanchette is an avid runner who has competed in a number of highprofile events including the Boston Marathon. She also writes her own blog -- christineblanchette.wordpress. com.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Mysteries continue, for one more week. Seek the truth beneath appearances. Dig deep. (Someone acts sweet but can’t or won’t do what they seem to promise. Applies all week.) Rest, plan and meditate Sunday. Visit a psychic, pastor or other counsellor. Your energy, charisma and effectiveness surge Monday/Tuesday. Monday holds refusals despite your luck, but you might vault over them. Tuesday favours you, especially in two areas: friendship, and depths. (So again, dig deep.) Chase money or a sensual bond Wednesday (good) and Thursday (goals might be elusive). Talk, travel Friday/ Saturday. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Relationships are accented, but don’t fall in love or propose this week. (Don’t worry – if such seems imminent, there’s still lots of time.) Wishes come true Sunday – happiness, friends, light romance and popularity paint your future with golden strokes! But retreat this night through Tuesday: you need a short but deep rest: seek quietude, plan, contemplate. You’ll spy the inner workings of love Tuesday. Your energy, charisma and effectiveness surge upward Wednesday/Thursday – strike early Wednesday, in legal, travel, intellectual areas. Chase and conserve money Friday/Saturday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: This is your last week of work – Friday begins a month of fresh breezes, exciting meetings, new horizons and opportunities. (Opportunities are unusually important this winter/ spring – seizing them can change your life.) Until Friday afternoon, complete chores, especially the obligations that “show up” Wednesday/Thursday – if neglected they will weigh you down later, just when you should be rising. Earlier, chase practical and prestige goals Sunday – success accompanies the ambitious! Wishes, optimism and social joys mark Monday/Tuesday. All week, DON’T begin a new love.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The romantic theme continues, but DO NOT begin a love affair or new relationship this week. Other themes, creativity, speculation, beauty, pleasure and teaching, are fine. Generally, you are (or your subconscious is) putting on the brakes a bit in all these areas, preparing for a subsequent surge. Sunday’s splendid – intellectual, travel, love and communication projects succeed. Exercise your ambitions Monday (dilemmas of choice) and Tuesday (success via creative effort). Social delights, flirtations, wish fulfillment arrive midweek! Retreat Friday/Saturday: plan the work that looms. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Your “hibernation” period continues, so rest deeply – until Friday, when a month of romance, pleasure, speculation, risk and adventure starts! Neither make nor accept any partnership proposals this week (nor persuasive pitches for commitment of any kind). Sunday offers superb financial, investment, research, diagnostic and intimate opportunities. Sit down with a loved one for a deep, exploratory talk. Gentle wisdom enters Monday/Tuesday. Be ambitious mid-week, especially first thing Wednesday morning. (Avoid selfdeception.) Friday/Saturday bring social delights and bright optimism! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: If a new wish or life goal comes to you this week, don’t invest a lot of faith in it; your destiny is very likely going to detour around this one. Sunday’s filled with opportunities (or opposition if you push others too hard) – exciting meetings or openings “synch” with your intuition. It’s a good time to answer “yes” on a whim. Life’s depths and mysteries rise to the surface Monday/Tuesday: DON’T invest, commit, nor seek intimacy Monday – Tuesday, these succeed. Gentle love, understanding, cultural stuff Wednesday/Thursday. Friday begins a month of domestic matters.

Aries March 21 - April 19: Travel, call during an active, friendly Sunday. But this night, settle into home – and there, through Monday/Tuesday, tackle some difficult questions around relationships, marriage and life’s opportunities. (Are there any left for you? Yes, many, but they’re all connected to ambition, career, until late 2012.) Tuesday’s better; a “secret” friend or stranger might help. Romance, creativity, pleasure and beauty whisk you to adventure midweek! (Don’t start a love relationship this week, though. It’s doomed long term.) Plunge into chores Friday/Saturday. Chase fun, friends, all week. Taurus April 20-May 20: The accent lies on ambition, career, dealings with VIPs, bosses and parents. Take a quiet, behind-the-scenes approach. Confidential discussions, private planning, quietly lining up allies, contacting/applying to government or institutions – all these contain a quiet but lucky “change.” Chase money or shop Sunday, but NOT for techie items. Monday (barriers) and Tuesday (success) bring errands, communications, paperwork, details. Midweek accents home, and a choice between ambition and relaxation. Romance calls Friday/ Saturday. All week, avoid over-exertion, physical and intellectual. Gemini May 21-June 20: DON’T fall in love, propose, or chase a new romance this week. You’ve started to achieve success in group and social situations – and this will continue for four months of solid, heart-warming growth. If you’re single, this might well yield a new love. But not this week. You shine Sunday: start new projects, ask favours, show your talents. Your intuition is superb, so just do, rather than over-think. Quit by suppertime. Money, purchases and possessions fill Monday (barriers, waste) and Tuesday (success – buy high-tech). Communicate, travel midweek. Home, rest Friday/Saturday.

Feb. 13 - Feb. 19 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Continue to seek money, new clients, to buy and sell, until Friday.Your personality has grown more gracious and alluring the past week or so, and this helps you with ambitions this week. You’re slowly changing, and slowly but seriously climbing, carving out a new “position” this decade. Tackle chores Sunday – you accomplish much! Relationships contain opportunity and opposition Monday, but success and good feelings Tuesday. Finances, investigation, intimacy, lifestyle choices are blessed Wednesday, “iffy” Thursday. Wisdom, gentle love come Friday/ Saturday. A busy month begins. Aquarius Jan.20-Feb.18:Yourenergy,effectiveness and charisma continue at a peak...sexual magnetism drips from you too. (Hmm, not sure of that image.) You might attract amorous attention, but DON’T begin a love affair now (nor ever with anyone you first meet this week). Sunday’s romantic, creative, pleasurable and beautiful – you’ll win at games or love! Tackle chores Monday (results uncertain) and Tuesday (good results). Relationships, opportunities, exciting meetings fill Wednesday (lucky morning!) and Thursday (be diplomatic, not evasive). Friday’s financial, and begins a month of money efforts. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Continue to lie low, rest, contemplate and plan. Refresh your spirit. Friday begins a month of fresh energy, rising charisma and effectiveness – but rest until then. Sunday’s splendid at home or in nature – a great day to enhance your security, deal with family members, garden, etc. Romance, creativity and beauty touch you lightly Monday/Tuesday, but the best that comes from this is friendship. It’s not quite time, Pisces. Tackle chores and health concerns Wednesday/Thursday. Wednesday morning’s efforts can open a lucky career door. Exciting meetings, opportunities occur Friday/Saturday. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
