Man in Motion needs your help Rick Hansen calls for relay volunteers BY DAVID MURPHY Special to the News
Twenty-five years ago, the Great Wall of China, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, did not have accessible ramps for disabled people. Today, it does. This is just one of the marks the Man in Motion tour left on the world, and it all comes down to Richmond resident Rick Hansen. “It symbolizes change,” Hansen said of the Great Wall’s upgrades at his headquarters next to the BCIT Aerospace building. Now Hansen wants to continue that change and inspire more people around the world in the 25th anniversary relay of Man in Motion. But now, it’s not just one man in motion. Instead of Hansen carrying the load, he’s asking volunteers with unique stories on how they have changed their communities to carry and pass on his specialized Canadian-minted medallion, like an Olympic Torch Relay. And it is easier getting the word out now than it was in China 25 years ago. Upon arriving in China in 1985, Hansen admits he found it hard and questioned whether to continue the tour because everything was so inaccessible. “There were no cell phones or Internet back then either, see Hansen page 4

BYLAWS
Noise police price is not music to taxpayers’ ears City counting $100,000 plus cost to deal with rising number of complaints between residents, businesses Bringing the City of Richmond’s noise pollution bylaw into this century may quiet down conflicts between businesses and residents. But it’s going to come at a price. The proposed updated bylaw — on which the public are set to be consulted this spring — was sparked after a spike over the last two years in Richmond in the number $

of serious noise complaints, directly related to the increased urbanization and growth of the city. A staff report placed before city council this week detailed how $100,000 is needed to bankroll the updated bylaw: with $60,000 going to counsel/consultants; $20,000 for replacement noise measuring equipment; $15,000 for staff training and another $5,000 for documentation. Also, city staff anticipate that the new bylaw may generate a small number of

additional prosecutions — at an average cost of $15,000 to $20,000 per prosecution. More money may also be needed to help Richmond Health Department enforce the new rules, should they come into force after the public consultation process. The proposed bylaw — which hasn’t been updated for 11 years — was approved for public consultation Monday by city council. The city will now enter into a public participation program this spring in an
effort to explain the intricacies of a new stricter noise bylaw and obtain feedback via open houses and online surveys. Staff also explained in the report that the “point of reception” for where the noise complaint should be measured, will be where the disturbance is being experienced, as opposed to the complainant’s property line. It has been my privilege to serve the constituents of Richmond for the past 30 months. I would like to focus on three important election issues: ! The economy. Our government has maintained a low-tax policy and will continue to do so once re-elected. Now that the worst of the global economic crisis is behind us, our next challenge will be reducing the deficit. The opposition parties propose expensive programs that will result in increased taxes and increased deficits. It’s important that a low-tax and responsiblespending party be elected. The Conservative Party is that party. ! Crime and Human Smuggling. Unlike the Liberals and NDP,
quote of the week
“If they truly understood where the funding came from . . . they might have made a different decision. But they said ‘no’ and that’s good enough for me.”

I support tough sentences for convicted criminals and taking action to prevent the abuse of our refugee system. While we must have compassion for those who are genuinely persecuted, the party elected must ensure that our country’s refugee process is not abused, especially by human smuggling groups that exploit Canada’s goodwill for their own benefit. The Conservative Party is that party. ! Working for Richmond. Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, I have worked to secure federal funding for over 20 infrastructure projects. Examples include improvements to the Richmond dike, flood protection, drinking water pipelines, sewage pump station upgrades, and road transportation projects (e.g. Nelson Road and Highway 99). These projects are prudent uses of taxpayer money that produce tangible returns — including jobs — for the people of Richmond. We need to elect a party that will invest federal money wisely right here in Richmond. The Conservative Party is that party. I am thankful for the opportunity you have given me to serve our community and our country.
Joe Peschisolido Liberal
I bring to Richmond my experience and knowledge, not only as a lawyer, but more importantly as an effective MP. Like any other Richmond resident, I feel strongly about the issues that affect our everyday lives as well as the issues that will affect our families in the future. On our families: A Liberal Government will provide a social safety net for Canadians. I support the Liberal national housing strategy which will commit $550 million over two years to provide affordable housing to Canadians. On our children: Investing in our future is important. Students and parents will benefit from the Liberal $1-billion Canadian Learning Passport.
On our taxes: Individuals as well as small and large businesses are our concern. I will fight for the return of the $29.6 million that the federal government profited with the sale of the Garden City Lands after the March 2010 Agreement. This was money that came from Richmond taxpayers. On the environment: The airline consortium’s 15 km jet fuel pipeline proposal across Richmond should be re-evaluated with a full environmental assessment. I also support the Liberal call to ban crude oil traffic along the British Columbia north coast as well as the Liberal policy to implement a cap and trade system to combat climate change. On the dignity of our residents: I will continue to ask for the resignation of CSIS Director, Richard Fadden, who questioned the loyalty of Canadians based on whether they are “first or second generation” or “long-standing Canadians.” On the arts: I understand the importance of the arts industry in Canada and support the Liberal policy which will double the Canada Council Arts Budget to $360 million over the next four years. I will listen to your concerns. I will be your voice for Richmond.
Peel away all the political positioning and rhetoric and this election is all about trust — or in the case of the Harper Conservatives, lack thereof. Canadians are taking note of the telltale signs of the Harper Government’s real agenda, and the nasty and secretive way in which he governs. Only a minority of Canadians trust the Stephen Harper Conservatives, and recent polls have identified that even fewer trust them on making decisions related to science and technology. Who would have thought Canada would have a 21st century government
that muzzled scientists? And now, a 2011 election campaign consisting of the Harper “bubble” that strictly limits media questions while screening and ejecting people from campaign events whose only crime was to be associated in some small way with other political parties or environmental organizations. Is this a sign of a functional democracy? Is this the Canada Canadians want to see? In B.C., this is a contest between the Harper Conservatives and the Jack Layton New Democrats. British Columbians, vote NDP to stop the Stephen Harper Conservatives
who have let us all down. They’ve shown they can’t be trusted on health care, pensions, the environment, energy policy, foreign policy or to help B.C. families through tough times all the while running up a massive national debt. They promised to not appoint a single unelected senator, but appointed more political senators than ever before. They turned their backs on their constituents and voted to impose the HST. British Columbians, trust Jack Layton’s NDP to get results for working families and to fix Ottawa.
Richmond’s environment has been my lifelong home of 29 years. I care about the land, air, water, and all of the living parts, including you, the reader of the Richmond News. As your representative, my voice will be yours. I will listen to the people of Richmond, and that will guide my decisions. As a candidate for the Green Party of Canada, I share common values as expressed in all of our policies, based on six fundamental principles. Ecological wisdom — to show respect for the natural world. I am a public school teacher in Richmond, lead eco-tours of the Garden City lands, and have a conservation biology degree from UBC.
Non-violence — to strive for a culture of peace. I am a co-operative citizen, volunteering my time to advocate for solutions to conflict without violence, and I march against war and jet fuel pipelines. Social justice — to ensure equitable distribution of resources and opportunities. I attend council meetings to provide a voice for the voiceless, the children who deserve better than the world we are presently leaving for them. Sustainability — to shift growth to new sectors that allow for the maintenance of biodiversity. I bring nature back to the city through stewardship and I help coordinate sustainability initiatives for the Richmond School
District. Participatory democracy — to express our views and participate directly in decisions. I have been a candidate in five Richmond elections to inspire the youth to get engaged and I encourage all of you to come to election debates, decide for yourself and vote! Respect for diversity — to honour and value ecological diversity. I take individual responsibility to lower my ecological footprint and with your support I will reduce Richmond’s ecological impacts while harnessing our multiculturalism to educate our effective practices to the world.

News Hansen: We want to inspire countries Continued from page 1 so it was hard spreading the word,” said Hansen. “But when I arrived at the Great Wall I was greeted by thousands of people.” And his presence had an impact. Shortly after his arrival, the China Disabled Persons’ Federation was established and the China Rehabilitation Research Center was built in 1986. For the anniversary, Hansen is set to retrace his tracks in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong when he leaves for Asia on Sunday. The Canadian tour will start in August in Nova Scotia and will conclude in Vancouver. Money raised will
fund spinal cord research. The tour rolls into Richmond May 20 and 21. “Richmond is one of the most accessible cities in the world,” said Hansen. But that’s not enough for him — he wants to reach places where getting around is still a hardship for many disabled people. “We want to grow and continue to expand in making the world more accessible,” said Hansen, who also hopes to find a cure for spinal cord injuries. Hansen, now 53, has asked for 7,000 volunteers to help in the 12,000-km trek across the Great White North. He won’t be the one traveling in the marathon, but is asking participants to be medal-
bearers, representing their community. The 7,000 people will be chosen from a contest online at rickhansenrelay. com, where volunteers list their communities, personal information and story. The original Man in Motion tour started in 1985 and ended in 1987. Hansen wheeled around the globe at a rate of two marathons per day — traveling a total of 40,598 km, or the circumference of the Earth. The tour raised $26 million and spawned Hansen’s Man in Motion Foundation, which has raised $200 million to date. This time, Hansen has set the goal at $250 million. “We want to inspire other countries to say, ‘what can we do.’” CHUNG CHOW/RICHMOND NEWS

Sprawl: Edging closer to commercial, industrial sites Continued from page 1 particular attention will be made by the city to engage the residents in two of last year’s most notable, long-running disputes — between Andrews Road residents and True World Foods in Steveston and between Caithcart Road residents and the Shark Club on Bridgeport. City council found out earlier this year that noise complaints fielded by
the health department for the last six months of 2010 skyrocketed compared to the same period in 2009. A total of 349 noise complaints were received during the six months, including a 25 per cent spike in construction-related issues; 33 per cent rise in residential neighbourhoods; 100 per cent increase regarding industrial noise and a 29 per cent hike in special events complaints.

The significant increase in noise complaints in Richmond is mainly due to the city’s burgeoning residential developments edging closer to commercial and industrial sites. As such, an up to date and more technically sensitive noise bylaw is required to deal with new issues. Harper chips at democracy
P
rime Minister Stephen Harper’s announced that, if his party forms a majority government following May’s federal election, he will quickly take steps to undermine democracy. Harper made his plan clear in comments to a news conference in New Brunswick Friday when he committed to end per-vote subsidies to political parties. What the prime minister means is that he would like to repeal some of the world’s most progressive election financing legislation and replace it, presumably, with a system more akin to that in the United States, which ensures wealthy individuals and organizations have a disproportionate influence on lawmakers. Currently, Canada’s regulations impose strict caps on the amount of money candidates can spend on election campaigns, and restricts donations from members of the public to modest sums, and ban donations of any kind from corporations and trade unions. The bulk of any given candidate’s campaign money comes from the public purse, in the form of a $2 subsidy for every vote their party garnered in the previous election times the number of years that have passed since. The effect is that it is more in the interests of a candidate to curry favour from voters than to do so from big business or labour. That will change if Harper is given an opportunity to put his plan into action. It is an idea with huge benefits for private interests and the parties that favour them, and absolutely nothing for ordinary Canadians. North Shore News editorial

Eco-consciousness sinking in The Editor, Garden City lands awareness has come a long way. Few now would want big buildings there. Many are glad to look out across the open-land park to the mountains. And it’s catching on that the sphagnum bog is a lung of the city. A remaining need is for more citizens with close-up knowledge of the “green space.” But the eco-conscious are wary of harming off-trail areas, and there are no trails on the Garden City lands. So how can one know the lands better? Try a free eco-tour with Michael Wolfe as your guide. Michael is a teacher and conservation biologist who knows the lands like an old friend. He’s leading a tour this Sunday, April 10. It’s easy to hike on the Garden City lands in April, before the green grows dense and tall. Michael will help you see what’s there. He’ll focus on native plants with values for food, warmth, and healing—and for biodiversity. With Michael’s insight, you’ll see why a large bog area is ideal for restoring the handiwork of the first agriculturist, nature. You’ll also see where there’s room for organic growing that joins forces with nature to meet food-security needs of our multi-culture community. Rain or shine, the April 10 eco-tour starts at 2:30 p.m. at the main entrance off Garden City Road, about 250 metres north of Westminster Highway. Wear boots, and bring an interest in conserving natural treasure. For more, visit GardenCityLands.ca. Jim Wright President, Garden City Lands Coalition Society

Theatre closure a true loss It’s a sad time for Richmond moviegoers — the Richmond Centre movie theatres have closed. After at least a decade of a rumoured closure, it has happened. There has been a movie theatre at Richmond Centre as long as I can remember. I remember driving out to Richmond (I grew up in Vancouver) for a special screening of Bambie when I was a little girl, and I remember making the trek to see Prince’s movie Purple Rain when I was a teenager. Since moving to Richmond in 1991, I’ve been to countless movies at Richmond Centre, and I will miss it for its location, its style and its modesty in comparison to the super movie complexes being built today. Richmond lost a pair of theatres that were in the Chapters mall about 10 or 12 years ago, and now we’re left with only Silvercity at Riverport as an option to watch films on the big screen. Regular readers of my column probably know I’m a huge movie fan. But one thing readers may not know is that I prefer to watch movies on the big screen; at home I just can’t seem to stay focused well enough to really enjoy a movie. I like the dark, the popcorn, the quiet in a theatre. At home, there
Tracy Sherlock ELEMENTARY, MY DEAR
are so many distractions competing for attention that it’s hard to actually sit down and watch a movie from beginning to end without at least pausing it to answer the phone, go to the fridge or fall asleep. I have nothing against Silvercity, except that it’s so far from my house. The movie-watching experience is great at Silvercity with its big screens, super-sized sound systems and tiered seating. There are so many screens at Silvercity that there tends to be an extensive and varied selection of films to choose from, which means there is always something to watch. But Richmond Centre is a five-minute drive from my house, while Silvercity takes a minimum of 15 minutes to get to at the best of times, and half an hour each way if traffic is heavy. At certain times of the day, I’d be faster to hop over to the Park Theatre or the Ridge Theatre in Vancouver than to drive all the way to Silvercity through the Steveston Highway and No. 5 Road
traffic jam. But then again, I recently read that those independent theatres in Vancouver may also be at risk of closing. In an article focused on the Hollywood Theatre on West Broadway, The Vancouver Sun reported that the Hollywood would probably be closing, and that the Ridge, the Dunbar and the Park are also at risk of closing. The Varsity is already gone and the Pantages is also closed. I hope something comes along to save these spaces; are we really ready for a world where the massive multiplex is the only place to go out and catch a flick? Movies just aren’t the same when you watch them on DVD on your TV, or, even worse, when you watch them on your computer screen. There’s something about gathering with other people to sit and enjoy the collective experience of being entertained together in a crowded auditorium. The laughter, the tears and the spontaneous applause are lacking when they’re experienced all alone in your living room. I will feel the loss of six movie screens at Richmond Centre for a long time to come. Comments and questions always welcome at tracy.sherlock@gmail. com.
Letters One MLA against pipeline The Editor, Re: “Councillors challenge MLAs to take stand on pipeline,” News, April 5. I just finished reading the above article by Alan Campbell. The story contains a great many quotes from Richmond city councillors on the issue of the proposed pipeline (as well as paraphrases of their comments) that create a very misleading impression of my position on this issue. Mr. Campbell didn’t contact me about my position on the jet fuel pipeline. I have taken a very strong stand against this project from the very beginning. In fact, I am publicly on record proclaim-

ing to the Richmond News my opposition to the fuel pipeline as early as May 2010. I have also taken extensive steps to draw the attention of our environment minister to this issue. Earlier this week, I succeeded in organizing a tour of the proposed site with Minister Terry Lake to ensure he is aware of what is at stake for the people of Richmond. This is an important issue for Richmond and we all share a responsibility to ensure the public is fully informed about it. Linda Reid MLA for Richmond East

Biennale beauty is in wallet of beholder The Editor, Re: “Richmond rejects keeping Biennale,” News, April 6. Thank you people of Richmond for shooting down the hare-brained scheme to purchase the Biennale art pieces. As Councillor Harold Steves rightly pointed out, it is taxpayers money, no matter where it came from. Evelina Halsey-Brandt, please do not push your taste of art down our throat. Halsey-Brandt can now purchase the magnificent piece/s of art out of her own money and display it inside her home, where she can admire it every waking hour of the day, and not subject the public to view what she considers to be works of art. At least the people of Richmond will be happy knowing that the

funds were from her pocket and not public funds, which could be put to better use. We elected the councillors thinking they would be wise, not foolish. However, recent events have shown that we were unwise in our selection. It is my opinion that, in future, any expenditure of large sums of money should first be approved by a two third majority of councillors and then by a majority of the people to ensure that public money is wisely spent. If the councillors feel there is money that needs to be spent, donate it to the food bank. Many needy people will be delighted with the generosity. Glen Heredia Richmond

The Editor, Re: “Poverty stats need re-check,” Letters, April 6. As I read this letter, a sense of unreality came over me. Mr. Yap taking credit for the increase in minimum wage? This reminds me of the apocryphal story of the guy who murdered his parents, and then plead for

ground. When I look around at Canada I see health care, education, equality for all people, opportunity for all people, roads, sewers and a wonderful natural world. All of these things are supported by tax dollars. None of these are a priority for corporate tax cuts. This election could easily have been avoided had Conservatives been willing to compromise and work with other parties. This is the idea of coalition, the idea of working together to find common ground for a common purpose. It is obvious that the Conservatives don’t understand the meaning of that. The Editor, While the Conservative party seems intent on redefining certain words and ideas, it is important that we Canadians remember real meaning. The first word that comes to mind is democracy. This is a concept that Canadians have died for in the past and people around the world are dying for right now. We are being asked to pay for it with our tax dollars, $300 million for this election. Keep in mind that the Conservatives considered $1 billion a reasonable price to pay for the G8/G20 meetings in Toronto to have Stephen Harper smiling beside other world leaders. When Conservatives say the word “tax” they follow by spitting on the

leniency in the court, on the grounds that he was an orphan! Come on, Mr. Yap, the government which you represent has, for nearly ten years, refused to increase the minimum wage until, at last, the new premier made it a requirement! Do not, under any circumstances, even try
to take any credit for the increase. This surely reinforces my opinion that too many politicians seek office only for their own agrandisement, and not for public service. And they wonder why the number of voters continue to diminish. T.R.(Terry) Murphy Richmond

There are many occasions in our life when if we just simply stopped and became still, we might make different choices rather than acting on impulse. Each time I write a column, the core of the content is KEEP IT always about being aware and conscious of your thoughts, regardless of the situation. As a matter of fact, we are awareness itself, but the personality in our beings takes over many times to run the show of life. When your life becomes chaotic, challenging or you’re in a place that is uncomfortable try stopping and do nothing. Be still and present with the feeling without pushing it away and be aware of what you notice. Stopping in your tracks from “doing” and having the courage to tell yourself the truth about what is really occurring in your life can provide very powerful insight. Sometimes the reason for not stopping is a way to avoid feeling something in our lives we would rather avoid. One way to discover what it is that you avoid is to ask yourself what it is you say no to. We all know what we say yes to in our life, but I would like to suggest that you take some quiet time and be totally honest with yourself and make a list of what feeling you resist when it shows up in your life. Perhaps it’s a feeling of loneliness, insecurity, lack of money, abandonment; not knowing what the future may hold or despair. Whatever it is, underneath all of these emotions, is our good friend fear. Once you
Lorraine Wilson
identify these situations it’s an invitation to allow yourself to be open and meet the emotion with awareness. Stop running away from what you have been avoiding and simply turn your attention inwards and be present 100 per cent, however SIMPLE uncomfortable it feels. When we surrender and stop trying to control a feeling or an outcome and simply rest in “what is” you may notice a shift occurs in a very natural way. We do not create the shift; it is the awareness that brings about the change. Stop turning your attention outside of yourself and turn your attention within to discover what is underneath the emotion. We have such a difficult time stopping and trusting life will unfold and all will be OK and that’s the mind driving such thought patterns that we believe to be true. Bring awareness to one situation in your life you are constantly trying to avoid and next time it shows up, be mindful to just let the feelings associated with this situation be fully present. Let go of the avoidance of meeting a deeply held emotion and let it move through you, discover what is here and has been present all along. Hand it over to this great life force that moves through all of us rather than letting your mind trying to figure it out and control an outcome and then discover what is always present, what is always here. B.C. legislation allows spouses and children to apply to vary a Will, if they think it does not provide them an adequate and fair portion of the Estate. The meaning of “spouse” goes beyond married couples, and includes couples in “marriage-like” relationships. Last month, reasons for judgment were released in the case of Mazur v. Berg. Ms. Mazur met Mr. Fennell in 2002, on Hornby Island and they were together there until Mr. Fennell died in June, 2008. His son (from a previous marriage), Mr. Berg, was Executor and sole beneficiary under the Will. Ms. Mazur sought to vary the Will but first had to prove that she and Mr. Fennell were in a marriage-like relationship. The Court held in her favour, commenting in part, that relationships differ tremendously and there is no “checklist” of characteristics that are found in all marriages. The Court, seemingly, in any case will consider numerous factors in determining whether a couple is in a marriage like relationship. Some couples do many things together, others do not. With some couples, finances are blended and in others, finances are kept separate. Mr. Fennell and Ms. Mazur shared their lives together, and the Court felt they did have a marriage like relationship, and so she was successful. She was awarded 55% of Mr. Fennell’s Estate as well.

Expect to see more daffodils around Richmond, as people pin the yellow springtime flower to jackets and sweaters to support cancer awareness for daffodil month. Three Richmond college students are sacrificing two weekends of their busy lives — a time when finals are looming and papers are due — to help raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society’s (CCS). “It was the perfect opportunity to go out and get some fresh air and get away from the books for a day,” said daffodil distributor Jaeda McPherson. She is volunteering with her two friends Sarah Smith and Ben Edelstein, outside Starbucks on Ackroyd and No. 3 roads with a tray loaded with daffodils. McPherson has a personal connection to cancer — her mother had breast cancer last year, but is now in remission. Money raised is going to programs that guide cancer patients after harsh radiation treatments and when they do beat the disease. “She’s really proud of me,” McPherson said about her mom. “Cancer harmed our family 100 per cent, but to take such a negative thing a turn it into a positive is something special.” According to the CCS, the daffodil, which is worn like a poppy, a la Remembrance Day, has been representing cancer awareness since the 1950s. The idea was that the “bright, cheerful flowers created an atmosphere that seemed to radiate hope and faith that cancer could be beaten.” Daffodils are by donation but people are encouraged to contribute a loonie or toonie to the fund. All money is going to the Canadian Cancer Society to raise money for cancer awareness and after treatment programs. However, McPherson is less concerned about money raised and more about getting the word out. “Everyone knows cancer exists, but they don’t know they can help in different ways,” said McPherson. “It’s not about the dollar sign, more about awareness.” Daffodil Day is April 27.

AUTO SHOW
Car makers focus on performance, environment PHOTO SUBMITTED
BY DAVID CHAO
Special to the News
The launch of the 2011 Vancouver International Auto Show — which took place March 29-April 3 and was held for the first time at the Vancouver Convention Center — was reflective of the current Canadian economy: subdued but cautiously optimistic. The manufacturers have reasons to be buoyant, thanks to healthy gains in sales fueled by new as well as significantly refreshed models. On one hand, the theme of some models was very much focused on horsepower and performance — to feed the adrenaline seekers. However, with the cost of gas lingering over $1.30 per liter, it was also timely for some manufacturers to introduce several gas-sipping models to satisfy the more environmentally-conscious buyers here in British Columbia. The contrast could not be more clearly illustrated by Toyota, with one of only 10 LFA Supercars for the Canadian market proudly on display, and at the same time introducing the up-sized version of the iconic Prius called the Prius V (for versatility). The “V” offers as much as 50 per cent more interior cargo space, improved handling and safety features, and backed by the same industry benchmark fuel efficiency as the original. Here are my personal highlights from some of the participating manufacturers:
The new Fiat 500 makes a colourful splash at the 2011 Vancouver International Auto Show. It is cute and stylish, and comes wellequipped with many standard features not usually found in such sub-compact cars.

General Motors
Much has already been written and talked about the allelectric Chevrolet Volt with a range of about 500 kms and expected to be available here in Canada from this summer. GM also introduced three other new Chevrolet models to watch out for in the near future such as the Orlando, a small SUV, the Sonic, a compact car, and the Camaro Convertible. The Buick Verano sedan is expected to shake up gains in market share in the ultra-competitive compact luxury segment.
Ford Motor
Following up on the highly successful Ford Fusion, the attention turned to the all-new Ford Focus, with its distinctive trapezoidal front grille and overall sporty compact design catching one’s eye. It relies on the same platform as the Ford Focus Electric, which can be expected to clock a top speed of 136 km/h. Ford plans to roll out several more all-electric vehicles by 2013.
Chrysler
Chrysler has been busy introducing several refreshed and significantly improved models of late including the beautiful 300, Charger, Jeep Grand Cherokee and so on, but the one that grabbed most of the attention was also the smallest: the Fiat 500. It’s “cute” and stylish at the same time and comes well equipped with many standard features not usually found in such sub-compact cars. With its sophisticated 1.4 L engine, you can expect the little Fiat to be miserly with fuel.
Toyota
Easily one of the stars of the show is the Lexus LFA Supercar, of which there are only 500 available worldwide and 10 here in Canada. Toyota also delivered in the hybrid side as expected, which includes the Lexus CT200h and the Prius V, which boasts far more useable interior space compared to the original Prius. The most notable announcement in the Nissan line of cars was the pricing for the Nissan Leaf (starting from $38,395). Although the price is considered high, it comes with an impressive array of standard features. The Nissan Leaf is the first mass produced all-electric vehicle that is currently available for purchase.
Honda
Making most of the news in the Honda camp is the imminent replacement of the highly successful Honda Civic model line. Providing an insight into the more aggressive and sporty see Jetta page 16

VW
In its desire to establish a stronger foothold in the Canadian market, Volkswagen showcased the all-new Jetta, which has gained a cleaner, more sophisticated look and a very attractive price to boot. The Jetta is offered in five trim levels, including the diesel engine TDI as well as the sporty GLI, which comes with a two-litre gas engine.
BMW
Making news at the BMW booth was
Mercedes
Improving on an already stunning design, the Mercedes CLS 63 AMG raised the pulse rate with its stunning silhouette which is matched with the performance and handling it deserves. Also getting the attention was the new SLK Roadster.
Jaguar/Land Rover
Spicing up the day were the beautiful beasts from Jaguar, particularly the XJ Supersport. Not to be out-done, however, the stylish all-new Range Rover Evoque crossover coupe also appeared in the show.

Aside from interest generated from the all-new Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai also introduced the Veloster hatchback coupe, with its eye-catching design meant to attract the younger crowd.
the 1 Series M Coupe, packing a powerful sport-tuned three- litre engine into a compact package. Also unveiled was the iconic and beautifully contoured BMW 650i with 3D Heads-up-display. Making just as much of the headlines was the Mini Cooper Countryman, a four-door “stretched” or “up-sized” version of the classic.

and get ahead in a course to make returning to school easier. For students in high school, the extra week in spring break this year proved to be very helpful. Hard working students got to take a break and socialize and students that may have been behind for whatever reason had a chance to catch up. In general, this year’s extended spring break seemed to aid a lot of people including teachers, students and parents. The extra week was the breath of fresh air needed to replenish and return to school, ready to finish of the rest of the year. Nafisah Baksh is a Grade 12 student at Steveston-London secondary.

The highly controversial two-week spring break for Richmond’s public schools has come to an end. Although there may be some negative aspects to having a longer spring break, many see a twoweek spring break as much needed and not just for the obvious reasons. A longer break allows high school students, as well as teachers, to relax and prepare to come back for the last couple of months of school, fully recharged. In addition, a longer break allows for more comfortable vacations and trips to be taken. Annual trips such as StevestonLondon’s geography trip and S-trip had much participation due to the fact that students could return

Capturing the life and times of amazing May Doug Welbanks writes about a woman who transformed him with her unwavering dedication to the poor in Downtown Eastside over the last few years of her life. “May had such a profound impact, not only on me, but many, many people, so I started looking for biographical information about her on the Internet,” said the 61-year-old. “I was surprised to find only a couple of references about her … one was a full-page obituary from Douglas Todd and a few highlights of her life were on the St. James’ Social Services website.” Welbanks, who was already a published author of five non-fiction books, decided to honour this “amazing woman, whose life story deserved to be told.” “A lot of people didn’t like religious do-gooders and so there might have been an interest not to see her story told,” he surmised. Welbanks was determined to revive the memories of a significant Canadian, one, he said, who contributed greatly to the country’s social safety net of human rights and social justice. Gutteridge died in relative obscurity in 2002 at the age of 84. “It took me three years to research, locate people and write the book,” he said, adding he spoke to more than 100 people while looking into her life of volunteer service to the poor and downtrodden. “However, by the time I started her two sons preferred to stay in the background and her husband, Arthur, had passed away.” Welbanks remembers an especially moving story that he believed summed up Gutteridge’s deep and unwavering faith for mankind, no matter what circumstances they were born into. In the late seventies, a 39-year-old alcoholic woman died, leaving behind five small children in the Downtown Eastside. Gutteridge knew what would happen to these young Aboriginal children should they

Richmondite Doug Welbanks spent three years researching the life of May Gutteridge, who inspired him to dedicate his life to helping the people of the Downtown Eastside.
ACUPUNCTURE AND WELLNESS CENTRE
In his youth, Doug Welbanks was an idealistic university student studying social work. As a parishioner at St. James’ Anglican Church, in the heart of Canada’s poorest postal code, the Richmond resident met the “incredibly dynamic and inspirational May Gutteridge.” “I actually met May in 1972 while studying at Simon Fraser University,” he said. “I had all these theories about the problems of the Downtown Eastside and May completely changed how I viewed the people who lived there. “May believed in treating everyone with the same respect and she didn’t just listen to the poor, addicted and the downtrodden, she was nice to them.” Welbanks ended up working for three years as a social worker for the St. James Social Service, where he saw first hand what this proper, yet tough, British woman was able to accomplish for the residents of the Downtown Eastside. Her selfless deeds on behalf of this poor neighbourhood were many. Gutteridge ran St. James Social Services Society for more than 30 years, expanding it into a major hostel (Vancouver’s first free standing hospice named after her, May’s Place), opened the first shelter for abused women, as well as an outreach agency with an annual taxpayer-supported budget in excess of $3 million. Fast forward to July 2008. Welbanks, by then the former director of debtor assistance who managed social services for poor B.C. families, had learned that Gutteridge had passed away six years earlier. Over nearly three decades, Welbanks had periodically met up with Gutteridge but lost touch with her

The RGSA Rangers capped off a very impressive season in the Metro Women’s Soccer League by winning the Third Division regular season title and capturing the Consolation Cup. The Rangers have only lost two games all season and they were not about to let the cup win get away from them. Although West Van dominated the first 10 minutes, it was all Richmond after that. Both teams had chances in the opening half and Richmond goalkeeper Katie Lawrence was forced to make a key save
off of a free kick to keep things even. The Rangers had several quality chances but were unable to put the ball in the back of the net. Richmond started the second half knowing that it needed to take control early and was rewarded with a goal in the first minute by Katie Govett. West Van had a late flurry, but the Rangers were able to hold on for the muchdeserved victory. It was a strong game from both teams. The way a final should be played.
Griffins have leading roles in all-star game
The provincial senior boys “AAA” basketball champions will be front and centre for tomorrow afternoon’s B.C. High School All-Star game at UBC’s War Memorial Gym. Four starters from the RC Palmer Griffins will be playing for a team that will
be appropriately guided by their head coach — Paul Eberhardt. The foursome includes Mike Zayas, Billy Cheng, Aaron Heran and provincial tournament MVP Vijay Dhillon. Team Eberhardt will be taking on Team Goulet with tip-off slated for 5:15 p.m.

It all began with a humble grass track at Minoru Park when they were approached by the Richmond recreation department to start a track and field team. Doug had just joined a medical practice in the suburban community of 25,000 and the couple’s first child — Jennifer — was born in 1961, followed by their son Rand three years later. “Little did we envisage that this fledgling club
of young athletes in 1961 would grow into one of the most successful clubs in Canada and gain a role in international athletics,” said Doug. “Not only have the club members succeeded in all levels of competition but they have contributed to the richness and diversity of our community by their post competitive careers” The Kajaks club has since grown and is regarded as a high profile and well known track and field club with many athletes who competed in the Olympics, such as Charmaine Crooks who ran for Canada in the 800 meters at the 1992 Summer Games in Barcelona and again four years later in Atlanta. In total, nearly 50 Olympic team selections have involved Kajak athletes and 72 medals have been won in international competitions. Members of the club have been instrumental as co-founders of the Achilles International Track and Field Society, The Vancouver Sun Run
and The Harry Jerome International Track Classic. Prior to the milestone anniversary, I had asked the Clements what kind of a moment is this for both of you? “Difficult to imagine 50 years have passed so quickly and so many people in the community have done so much to help our youth find their potential in their lives,” they said. The Clements‘ outstanding contribution to the city of Richmond was recognized when the Minoru oval was renamed Clement track. Now, the well-known track and field ambassadors hope to keep the momentum going for another 50 years. The Richmond Kajaks is both a recreational and high performance track club. The club website can be found at www.kajaks.org. Federal Investment in Richmond: A Report Card When I was first elected in 2008, I committed myself to ensuring that Richmond would get its fair share of financial support from Ottawa. With an election underway, I’d like to share my own “report card” on how we’ve done. After all, I’m asking for you to re-elect me and it’s only fair that you should know whether or not I’ve “delivered” for Richmond. The bottom line is that since April of 2009 there has been $26.5 Million in federal project funding in Richmond. The largest beneficiaries have included: • $1M for the Sea Island Hovercraft Base • $5.3M for a Rapid Bus Lane on Hwy 99 • $1.4M for Sewer Upgrades and Pump Station Construction • $2M for the Lulu Island Waterworks Program • $6.3M for the Nelson Road Interchange on Hwy 91 • $1M for a Seismic Upgrade for the Knight Street Bridge • $1M for Dike Trail Upgrades near the Olympic Oval • $1M for the Hamilton Community Centre Upgrade • $1.5M for the Steveston (Paramount) Wharf & Building Repairs
Many other local initiatives have also benefited from this government’s financial support, including the Lansdowne Road Extension, Kwantlen Library improvements, Steveston, South Arm and Hamilton Community Centres. Federal dollars have even helped the Richmond Lawn Bowling Facility. Can I take credit for all of this? Of course not; committed national, provincial, and local governments, public servants, business owners and community volunteers – to whom we all owe our thanks – have made important contributions. That being said, I am proud of the advocacy and project promotion work that my staff and I have undertaken. I hope that on May 2nd the Conservative government and I receive renewed mandates to continue this important work for Richmond.
