Wacky tales from the police beat Tom ZYTARUK Staff Reporter

S

urrey Mounties encountered a bounty of comic relief in 2010. Here are some of the highlights: Just last week, a guy called 911 in Guildford because his pet cat was attacking him. The fellow tried to fend off the onslaught of scratches by pushing the tabby into his toilet, but it kept springing out. Police found it dozing in its litter box — no need to alert the Emergency Response Team. Indeed, the Surrey RCMP dealt with several strange calls this year involving animals. They’ve had to round up cows that wandered into busy traffic in South Surrey and even tried to corral some peacocks. Five of the exotic birds had escaped from a breeder during the summer and were seen perching here and there in Newton. Police found them impossible to catch and left them to roam the streets and rooftops. In another case, a frightened mother called 911 to report a burglary in progress at her home in South Surrey. Somebody was trying to break down her door, she told the dispatcher. She and her children hid in the bathroom until police arrived to catch the masked offender — a fat old raccoon. Other people didn’t need animal sidekicks to commit amusing strangeness. This next case had no bears, but does bear some similarity to Goldilocks. Police introduced this fellow to some nice people after arresting him on suspicious of committing household chores. The guy had wandered into a few houses in Guildford. At one place he made coffee, and at another he folded

clothing. He was nabbed at a third house, as he was getting ready to take a shower. On Barnston Island, four joyriders found themselves in deep do-do even before they were busted. Police caught them after the stolen car they were in crashed into a big pile of manure. Speaking of do-do, if you’re planning on making a film with you and your

buddies dressed in camouflage and carrying all kinds of guns, you might want to warn your neighbours about it first. Four Surrey teenagers learned a hard lesson one Saturday afternoon when the Mounties paid them a visit, along with police dogs and even a helicopter. As it turned out, the guns were bogus and the boys had been filming for a school project.

And now for the blue stuff... Sometimes elements align in a news story so profoundly that naughty headline writers find their sum simply irresistible to ignore. This was one case. The Now newspaper drew some late-night exposure in

Nobody was hurt, but some pants were likely soiled. And then there was the biker who ended up being duped by his own cell phone after a road-rage spectacle in Bridgeview. A motorist became irate at the biker when he wouldn’t let him pass, and the biker responded by pulling his Harley alongside the car and stabbing at the guy’s roof. But when the biker

sped off, he accidentally dropped his cell phone on the road. The motorist with the stabbed roof picked up the phone and called police. As police were speaking with him at the scene, the phone rang. A cop answered, and told the biker to come back and pick up his cellular. He did, and was arrested for mischief and possessing a weapon for a dangerous

The woman, in her early 40’s and recently released from prison, was clinging to hope that she’d still be able to find a few gifts left on the shelves to help her celebrate Christmas and freedom with her family. Gilroy led the lady around the place, helping her find some fitting gifts. “She was happy to be there,” said Gilroy, adding that it was a heartwarming experience. “It showed me the real reason that we’re there, to be responsive to the community and give everybody hope that every person can get something for their children and have some kind of holiday no matter what their circumstances are,” she said. Gilroy says there were also fewer Adopt-A-Family sponsors this year. She praised all the volunteers for their dedication to the agency. “I feel fortunate to work with such a dedicated volunteer team. They put aside their own holiday tasks and obligations to make Christmas brighter for other families,” Gilroy said. mbabic@thenownewspaper.com

SURREY — A former top staffer with the Surrey school district was paid more than $600,000 in the previous academic year, a tidy sum that includes severance pay. Brian Bastien, an associate superintendent who earned an annual salary of $117,095, has received a total of $614,382.37. The information is contained in the school district’s public sector executive compensation report for 2009/2010, a document that also lists the compensation of other senior school district officials. All contracts exceeding $125,000 per year must be filed with the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association.

Aside from his pay for the year ending June 30, 2010, Bastien’s total compensation package includes vehicle allowance, unused vacation, retiring allowance and severance payout.

It was on Jan. 1, 1976 when Ray Gemmil drove “Guy Dominion,” a horse owned by Jim Richards and nine Vancouver Canucks hockey players of the day, to victory in the first-ever race and what was then known as Cloverdale Raceway. The nine pro hockey players were Gary “Suitcase” Smith, Andre Boudrias, Don Lever, John Gould, Ron Sedlbauer, Gerry O’Flaherty, Dennis Ververgaert, Chris Oldliefson and Gregg Boddy. To mark the anniversary on New Year’s Day, an added feature is a “guaranteed $10,000 win 4” contest presented by B.C. Lotto Corporation. Get lost, Bill, and take that leaf blower with you Another year has come and gone on the bullet train that is the passage of time in my life, and a new twelvemonth is on deck. There are a few things I’d like to see happen in 2011. Ted First and foremost, I want Bill Vander Zalm to go away, COLLEY this time for good. It’s nothing personal; in a one-on-one, The Shoe is very charming. It’s just one of those “enough already” situations. The guy had his shot at the Bigs, blew it and should have the good manners to stay gone. Recycled politicians are like retread hippies: it was fun back in the day, but the rest of us have moved on. Oh, and Bill? When you go, take Sarah Palin with you. Please. It might be fun, too, to see a couple of hardcore ideologues — let’s say, oh I don’t know, Kevin Falcon for the Liberals and Leonard Krog for the NDP — square off as party leaders in the next provincial election. Both have it in them to take this province to a lonely place and set folks on both sides

to disguise the truth. We’re at war. While we’re at it, maybe we reporter types could stop parrotting the official line altogether and start thinking for ourselves. I recently saw a headline about a “targeted” home invasion in Surrey. Is there another kind of home invasion? I mean, do home invaders actually drive around aimlessly looking for a likely place to take down? Maybe they do, I don’t know, but it seems to me most home invasions I’ve heard of involve a fair degree of specificity. Last, but definitely not least, I want my pal Henry’s sore elbow to get better. It breaks my heart to see him some days limping around and knowing he’s in pain. He never complains, but I know it’s bad. Hang in there, buddy, we’ll get it worked out. Well, I feel better now that I’ve got all that off my chest and I want to extend my best wishes to you all for a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. Hope you get what you want, too. of the political fence to pining for what went before. Moving away from politics and into more personal territory, I want someone to break into my neighbour’s garden shed and steal his goddam leaf blower. Nothing else, just the leaf blower. I’ve spent several days sitting in my house, listening to that high-pitched whine (the guy’s got a lot of leaves to blow) and fantasizing about loading a sock with a bar of soap and going to town on his melon. The thing is, the fantasies are becoming too real and I’m afraid I might actually snap one day and make them a reality. So please, someone, take the damn leaf blower and leave a rake in its place. My wife and I are shopping for a house in the Gulf Islands. There’s one we particularly like, but it’s overpriced by at least 50 large, and the owner, we’re told, has no interest in negotiating a realistic price. My New Year’s request of the Real Estate Fairy is this: Make her come to her senses. Hurt her if you have to, just get it done. I want Canadian media to stop calling our involvement in Afghanistan “the mission.” That’s just military/political newspeak intended

❚ VIEWPOINT ❚COLUMN

Ups and downs made 2010 a memorable year for me MyView

It’s New Year’s Eve of 2011. It only seemed like yesterday when I raised my champagne flute to welcome 2010 and now I’m Harvinder welcoming 2011. SANDHU Where has the year gone? The year went by so fast. The first quarter was the most exciting for my family as we enjoyed the Olympics. We Canadians of many colours and religions came together to celebrate our Winter Games. Besides reinforcing our Canadian behaviour — our polite, helpful manners — we also showed the world how united we were as a country, even though we are comprised of many different cultures and religions, all living in harmony. Our Canadian-ness was broadcast all over the world. Metro Vancouver got rave reviews. We impressed world visitors with a taste of our hospitality and beautiful scenery, all packaged in mild winter weather. What’s not to like about us?

The summer brought some sadness to our lives. We lost an elder, my childrens’ grandfather, who was much adored by his grandchildren. Seeing someone slowly slip into the afterlife was a profound experience for my family, especially the grownups. It brought to the forefront what is important in life. My journey to England was an eye-opener. I’m a history buff, so being right there at the castles and other historic landmarks was an exciting experience. My side trip to France was also great. I talked to many French people; they are a polite bunch, and my long conversation with the hotel night manager was illuminating. He shared how the French spoken here in Canada is more than 200 years old and that the French people and the language here had not evolved as it has in France. He did stress that he tries not to laugh when he hears such quaint French spoken, as it might offend the Quebecois visitors. His comments reminded me about South Asians who have been here for awhile — how those who have been here two or three

decades are behind in their thinking compared to newcomers. The French here are just the same as the South Asians; both are trying to preserve a way of life they left behind, not realizing, or too scared to acknowledge, that change is inevitable. People are really the same on the inside, no matter what they look like on the outside! Professionally, in my writing career, 2010 was my best year ever. Having a column run for more than a year in the largest distributed community newspaper in North America is a privilege to me. I’m blessed to have this opportunity, and doubly blessed to hear feedback from readers, good or bad. I appreciate and respect all of you who have taken the time to put your thoughts to paper. I look forward to writing in 2011 and hope to start more dialogues. Remember to celebrate tonight mindfully, get a designated driver to keep our roads safe. To all, a happy and prosperous 2011! Harvinder Sandhu’s column appears weekly in the Now.

Watch for Roses and Rotten Tomatoes in the Friday issue of the .

❚ A freighter full of rotten tomatoes to the spineless retailers who still insist on saying “Happy Holidays.” I am remembering these stores and boycotting them, as is everyone else I speak to. I starting doing this three years ago and now it’s catching on among many people parting with their hard-earned money. You had better remember that this is Canada, a country built on Christianity, and it will remain that way. This also goes for realtors and politicians. Just for the record, I’m offended when you tell me Happy Holidays and not Merry Christmas. To the people who refuse to say Merry Christmas, maybe you should work over Christmas and Boxing Day for straight wages and no overtime. Believe me, people are making their own “Naughty and Nice” list when it comes to shopping, buying a home and voting. ❚ Roses and hugs to the lads at Kal Tire on 72nd Avenue in Surrey. On a wet Christmas Eve, as they were shutting up shop after a busy week and anxious to spend the holidays and relax with their families, went out of their way to help a lady in distress, repair a flat tire and check all tires. Not only that, they sent me on my way with a cheerful, “Merry Christmas, ma’am, that will be no charge.” Now that is the true spirit of Christmas! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas, lads. ❚ A big bunch of roses to Breigh Way, Sarah Wolfe and Beth Scott, three Grade 5 students who, along with Emma Way, sold T-shirts with an original design by Breigh at Annieville Elementary craft fair and raised $350, which they used to buy and donate Christmas gifts to underprivileged kids through DeltaAssist. Way to go, girls. ❚ Many bouquets of roses and thanks to the church organization that delivered wishes and goodies to dialysis patients at Surrey Memorial Hospital. Sickness does not take holidays. Your kindness and thoughtfulness was very much appreciated.

A MESSAGE TO ALL RESIDENTS & BUSINESS OWNERS Do you have a storm drain on or in front of your property? It is important to keep it clear, especially during melting conditions. Blocked storm drains may result in excess accumulation of water along the road area, a situation that could become dangerous if it subsequently freezes. It also helps reduce the potential for flooding of adjacent properties depending on the extent of the blockage along with the amount of melting snow and rain fall. Here are my picks for the top 10 films of the year, with one honourable mention:

What’s On

‘Winter’s Bone’ wins with its chilling tale of Ozarks’ drug life

1. Winter’s Bone There are too many devastating moments to count Julie in director Debra Granik’s Winter’s Bone, a film that lays CRAWFORD bare the Ozarks’ drug culture in such detail that every moment rings as true as a documentary exposing the area’s extreme poverty. My vote for most poignant moment goes to the scene in which 17-year-old Ree Dolly (Jennifer Lawrence), fearing some crooked family member will come steal her siblings, teaches her little brother and sister how to shoot: “Just kneel down here like you’re praying.” Ree is on the hunt for her meth-cooking daddy, a journey that takes her from one scary moment to the next, to kin who are every bit as dangerous as strangers. Lawrence is jaw-droppingly authentic; supporting players uniformly great: Winter’s Bone leaves a chilling impression. 2. The Social Network The tagline for David Fincher’s film about a little website called Facebook should have read “with 500 million friends, how can a studio go wrong?” Talk about a made-in-heaven target audience. But I polled the last two clever people on the planet not on Facebook — my parents — and they loved the film, which says a lot. If you can entertain the uninitiated with two hours of computer code, ethical dilemmas and intellectual-property lawsuits, then you’re on to something. Credit goes to writer Aaron Sorkin, who creates a script that doesn’t pander (remembering that the guys who created “the Facebook” were Harvard geniuses, after all) and actor Jesse Eisenberg’s ability to spew said dialogue quickly, credibly and with conviction.

Lauren Sweetser in Winter’s Bone, a film that lays bare the Ozarks’ drug culture in such detail that every moment rings as true as a documentary about the area’s extreme poverty. by his drug-addled brother/trainer (a haunting Christian Bale) and his mother (Melissa Leo, fantastic), who is frequently accompanied by his Greek chorus of harpy sisters. It’s up to Micky and a new love (Amy Adams) to break free and take their shot. Knockout performances make this one memorable. 4. Never Let Me Go Mark Romanek adapts Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel into a picture-perfect postcard, with vistas lit like works of art. It would be lovely were the subtext not so creepy. The truth sneaks up on the audience slowly, as it does to Kathy, Ruth and Tommy (Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightly, Alex Garland), and all the other inhabitants of their cloistered English boarding school: this is no ordinary school, and the pupils are groomed with a single extraordinary purpose in mind. Against this horrormovie plot (which could have been hysterical in the wrong hands) is a simple love story between three young people, with the message that there is not a moment to waste.

3. The Fighter The sport of boxing is tailor-made for film: when all is said, it’s just one athlete who needs the fortitude of character for the inevitable mental and physical beatdown to come. So boxers almost always come with a great backstory. David O. Russell’s The Fighter is a great sports movie and a compelling family drama, about Micky Ward (played by Mark Wahlberg, who fought hard for the role), a fighter past his prime who must slough off his manipulative family if he ever wants a second shot at the top. He’s stymied

6. 127 Hours Danny Boyle’s film is a harrowing two hours and not for the faint, to be sure. But it’s a wonder, visually superb (despite the confined spaces) and with a riveting, terrifying, emotional core. The film tells the true story of Aron Ralston, the hiker who spent five days pinned

5. The Town Here’s hoping Ben Affleck can finally slough off some of the Hollywood ridicule he’s been forced to wear over the years, with The Town, his second directorial effort (after the equally impressive Gone Baby, Gone). The actor/director returns to his Boston roots once more to craft a thriller about life in a hard-knocks neighbourhood, where bank robbery is a family business. As usual, it comes down to one last heist before Doug, our good-guy-in-badcircumstances, can go straight; Jeremy Renner co-stars as the brother who can’t let Danny go. The story is nothing new, but the smart writing, fine performances and credible details make The Town a winner.

8. Please Give Director Catherine Holofcener taps into our upper-middle-class entitlement guilt with Please Give, which features frequent Holofcener collaborator Catherine Keener as Kate, owner of a high-end vintage furniture shop. Kate’s worried that she might be cheating the children of dead people out of their inheritance. We can all, regardless of age, relate to Kate’s middleaged restlessness to do something, thanks to Holofcener’s dry, bitterly funny but infinitely relatable script. 9. Honourable mention: Fair Game Another 2010 film designed to peeve while it pleased was Doug Liman’s Fair Game, starring Naomi Watts as covert CIA agent Valerie Plame, who was outed by Karl Rove and the Bush administration, apparently as payback for husband Joe Wilson’s (Sean Penn) assertion in a New York Times op-ed piece that there was no basis for the WMD hysteria, nor the subsequent invasion of Iraq. Liman wisely pares down a story with international implications to the plight of a woman trying to keep her family and her reputation intact.

7. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo This was the year of The Girl: all three novels in Stieg Larsson’s trilogy had bigscreen releases in 2010, before Hollywood tries its hand at it early next year. (David Fincher directs.) The first instalment, directed by Niels Arden Oplev, wins handsdown when it comes to rich and chilling details, from the harsh but beauteous landscape to the terrible violence that follows Lisbeth Salander around like a curse.

10. Shutter Island Martin Scorsese, working from Dennis Lehane’s expressive novel, crafts a psychological horror story that’s all about geographical isolation, day-glo colours, and a feeling of vertigo that just won’t go away. DiCaprio plays a U.S. Marshall sent to an asylum for the criminally insane to investigate the disappearance of a woman who seemingly vanished through the walls of her cell. You can’t say too much about the film without giving it all away except to say that nothing is as it seems, other than Scorsese’s knack for not making us want to throttle him when the inevitable twist (or two, or three) comes.

❚ WHAT’S ON

Sing in the new year with Westcoast ArtsScene

Here we are at the end of another year. This is where you are supposed to review the past year and make resolutions for the new year. Right. Melanie Just what we need MINTY — lists of what we could have done, should have done, didn’t do or had no interest in ever doing. Remember the highs and the lows. I could do that, but I won’t. That would mean reviewing all my files and picking out the best of 2010. Not going to happen. Nor will I make lists of ‘resolutions’ of how I can be a better person, get more accomplished, and make it to the ‘A’ list. You see, without a list, I can’t set myself up for failure or regrets. But honestly, I guess we just can’t look at the beginning of a new year without some suggestions. Here are mine; you can make your own. I really enjoyed being part of the cast of the panto Snow White, produced by Fraser Valley Gilbert & Sullivan Society. Many thanks to music director Dann Wilhelm (current prez of the society as well) for his encouragement. I do love to sing — I’m just not very good at it. Yet. If I were good, I would join a Sweet Adeline’s group. Well, good news for me and other women who love to sing and are looking for an outlet for their vocal skills. Westcoast

Harmony Chorus is again presenting three guest nights for interested women and prospective members. These are mini workshops on Jan. 12, 19 and 26, 6:45 p.m. start times at Parkland Fellowship Church, 160th Street and 96th Avenue. The workshops include breathing and barbershop sound, making sound and resonance, and performance aspects of barbershop. Visit www.westcoastsings.com for more information. This glee club for grown-ups may be just the thing to ring in your new year. White Rock Chamber Music program has its first concert of 2011 scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 8 at Pacific Carlton Retirement Residence, 15366 17th Ave., starting at 7:30 p.m. Featured musicians are pianist Caleb Robinson, Dolce String Quartet with violinist Jannie Chien, cellist Michaela Yoon and brothers Joseph and Jeffrey Liang, plus singer Colleen Blair. Everyone is welcome. Admission is $5, with proceeds to benefit Peninsula Arts Foundation with scholarships given to assist in musical training. I love the whole concept here: Good music, ambient surroundings and very affordable. I really would love to make it to one of these concerts in the new year. Program co-ordinators Ellen Neal and Sharon Jones have high praise for Caleb Robinson, who they declare is “absolutely spectacular.” Colleen Blair is another aspiring performer. Some of you may have

already seen her in Young People’s Opera Society’s productions of The King Who Wouldn’t Sing and The Faerie Queene. Both of these shows were at Surrey Arts Centre. That’s one of my favorite places on earth. I used to be a season ticket-holder to Ballet BC, but haven’t gone to one of their performances for many years; I plan to change that in 2011. Right now, the company has available mini-pack subscriptions that give you the opportunity to see the remainder of this season’s wonderful, vibrant collection of shows at a significant savings. As a mini-pack subscriber, you can attend VOLO (Feb. 17-19), The Alvin Ailey Dance Theater (March 18-19) and a 25thAnniversary Celebration (April 1416). I tell you, this company is going the extra distance to win us back. They are offering personal service, flexible ticket exchanges, have guaranteed seats, and discounts for those who bring along a guest. Apparently, audience services will be delighted to assist you. Absolutely delighted. Call 604-732-5003. Speak to Ashley Holm at extension 208 or Carol Byram at extension 221. Wow, that is personal. What do they say? “We have so much to share with you. Come experience something wonderful with Ballet BC!” This mini-series package is only available until Feb. 14. Happy New Year. melminty@telus.net

Winter holidays

Productive mid-winter activities for kids

Play, learn and act with these fun, stimulating activities Some Canadians can’t stand the winter. They’d prefer to stay cooped up indoors with their blankets, laptops, and remote controls. But a parent’s passivity — along with the winter blahs — often gets passed down to children as well. Avoid turning your little ones into vacant-eyed and uncommunicative teenagers. Play, learn, and act with these fun activities to stimulate young minds and expand their world: START A BUSINESS Play: Brainstorm ideas together for kid-friendly business start-ups. Some suggestions include: bake sales, dog-walking, pet-sitting, snow shoveling, or selling crafts. Have fun creating posters or flyers to promote the business. Learn: Your child will learn the value of money and hard work through this experience and will enjoy the quality time you spend with them in their business venture. Act: Invest in your child’s business and reward them with praise, regardless of whether the business succeeds or not. EXPLORE ETHNICITIES AND CULTURES Play: Have a multicultural week, where you participate in a different culture each day. Visit cultural niches in your

city, sample different foods, and learn simple phrases in different languages. Learn: You will be helping your child to become more open-minded and understanding of other cultures. Act: Visit an international children’s charity website and consider sponsoring a child of a different ethnicity. Your child will be able to develop a relationship with someone their own age halfway across the world. This will also help them to become more informed about other countries as they write to their new overseas friend. DEVELOP THE INNER ARTIST Play: Give your child a variety of art materials such as clay, markers, crayons, paint, stencils, or charcoal along with various types of paper and watch as their imaginations run wild. You can also teach them to use a camera and send them on photography assignments. Learn: Your child will express their creativity and develop confidence in their abilities. Act: Take your child to the local art gallery for ideas or encourage them to give their masterpiece to someone else to brighten their day. — News Canada

Steady job? Check. Moved out on your own? Check. Discovered who your true friends are? Check. Over the years, you’ve said goodbye to curfews, high school drama, and empty relationships. Now, as a single, working woman with a degree (or two) under your belt and a disposable income, you’re wondering how you can make this year more meaningful than the last. Here are some ideas: ❚ Learn a “fun” activity. Try Bollywood or tap dancing; learn to scrapbook or cook French cuisine. This activity should bring you joy, not stress. ❚ Develop a new skill. Learn a new language or instrument. Join a club to improve your public speaking abilities. It’s important to keep your mind and memory sharp, so keep learning new things. ❚ Take care of yourself. What girl hasn’t felt nervous walking alone at night? Or been stranded at the side of the road with a car that needs fixing? Today, there are many self-defense and auto mechanic courses that are catered towards women. You don’t have to be top of your class, but completing these courses will give you more confidence on the street and in life. ❚ Take care of someone else. Volunteer at a soup kitchen or a senior’s home. Cons i d e r s p o n s o r i n g a ch i l d . T h ro u g h

Sports Thousands of hockey fans turned out on a hot July day at Central City Plaza to help Surrey native Colin Fraser celebrate his day with the Stanley Cup. Fraser, a member of the victorious Chicago Blackhawks, brought the cup home to Surrey for a whirlwind day of activities. It was a bittersweet day for Fraser as he was traded to Edmonton in the offseason. The following day another Blackhawk, Troy ❚PHOTO/Sharon Doucette Brouwer, took the cup through the streets of his hometown of North Delta on the back of a Zamboni.

Looking back at 2010

Golfer Adam Svensson enjoyed a summer to remember thanks to six consecutive tournament wins. The Earl Marriott student’s streak included two provincial titles, one national championship and a world junior crown. ❚PHOTO/Sharon Doucette

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Changes loom in your ambitions, career, relations with VIPs, and your reputation. Chase success in these now, as December’s delays are past. Sunday’s wise: ponder your life direction. Pursue ambitions Monday/ Tuesday: good luck accompanies you, but so do a couple of pitfalls. A peer might fight against your rise, or your social inclinations (present or past) could mark you as unreliable, a lightweight or untrustworthy. On the plus side (and the plus is far stronger) your eagerness, as well as your contacts with administrations or government agencies, boost your prospects. Taurus April 20-May 20: Remain “above” prurient interests Sunday. Don’t invest. The weeks ahead emphasize gentle love, wisdom, compassion, far travel, intellectual pursuits, higher education, cultural or legal involvements and “big media.” December’s delays are over in these and other areas, so charge forward, especially Monday/Tuesday, when a new project might start in school, travel, a media campaign, etc. There’s a strong hint that this new venture involves a change and a “larger love!” (You might fall in love!) Work or career duties interfere with those love/travel things, so keep them apart. Gemini May 21-June 20: This week contains yes’s and no’s. The biggest “no” occurs Tuesday and Friday in investment, large money, power, clout and sexual areas. (Especially if these also involve legal, international, intellectual and cultural arenas.) The yes’s? In work, health, career Monday to Wednesday and Saturday: commitment equals eventual winning! If you have to choose between love, creativity and risk on one side and big money, clout, power, sexual magnetism on the other, choose love, creativity, risk: they control the environment right now. Your finances need change, but not expansion. You’re loved.

Cancer June 21-July 22: December’s delays are past, so you can confidently move forward, start projects, etc. The general accent lies now on relationships, opportunities and challenges, diplomacy and co-operation. This week contains beautiful “open doors” (especially to love and legal, international and intellectual relationships) and one major closed door (generally, to a “mature” relationship or to a practical, business-oriented agreement). If you recognize which is which, what’s open, what’s closed, you’ll save time, effort. Hint: “H,” “S” and “Y” have closed vibes. Breakthroughs Monday to Wednesday! Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Work, work and health issues, Leo. Ah, well, just plod through. The confusions and delays of December are gone. Sunday’s mildly romantic. A new work project might start Monday/ Tuesday – some great luck fills the security-homeinvestment-commitment area these days. It’s a great time to invest – but not in machinery, work tools, new employees, etc. Applies all week to Friday morning. Changing your work-home set-up might benefit you. (E.g., moving your office to your home.) Relationships are pleasant Wednesday noon to Friday. Secrets, sexy lures and good research doorways Saturday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Spend Sunday quietly at home. Romance is very complicated (and will stay so through mid-late 2012). Your romantic side suffers from conflicting motives, urges. Romance is trying to conquer itself, or reshape itself into something new. (For romance, you can read: sense of love, pleasure, self-indulgence, ego, creativity, risk, joy.) Where love is mature, seeks partnership, it succeeds (especially Monday/Tuesday and Friday night/Saturday). Where it “refuses to grow up,” it loses. (I think; everything’s complicated.) Work succeeds Wednesday noon to Friday. Don’t gamble nor invest this week.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: This entire decade (and half of next) life nudges you to change your abode. This will often peak in winter, as it did last week and does now. But there is also a problem around your home 2010-2012. You might be subject to a force larger than yourself. E.g., you might have to move due to expropriation, a legal ruling, the job market, etc. A change in abode can also merely mean a renovation, or a child moves away to school, etc. – natural, good things! Monday/Tuesday are excellent days to act on these nudges toward change, but not to attempt to overrule them. That won’t work. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: The delays and confusions of December are ended, so march ahead. Avoid major investments before Jan. 22. The grace and charm of your communications helps you capture love, especially Monday/Tuesday and Friday night/Saturday. But avoid gossip, revealing too much, or speech that is too sober or ambitious – these chase love away. The same advice, pro and con, applies to travel, general communications, and casual friendships. Watch what you tell “head office.” Chase money Sunday. Home, family co-operate and please you Wednesday eve to Friday. Discuss summer travel. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Chase money, buy and sell, seek a pay raise, more clients, etc. You can safely pursue new projects, as December’s delays are over. But don’t confuse chasing money with chasing your dreams. They are yet are not one and the same. They might directly conflict – e.g., I dream of living on a south sea island, but I can’t earn my living there; or both dreams and your money situation might change and evolve in a kind of tag-team wrestling match. To get your dream you change your job, and that in turn changes your dreams. Such choices arise Monday/ Tuesday (lucky!) and late week.

Jan. 2 - Jan. 9 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness ride a wave of success! Rest, catch your breath Sunday: contemplate future steps. Your energy soars Monday to Wednesday. Communications prove very lucky, especially on the social side. But in all this there might be the accurate realization that your social methods/goals have to change and, further complicating it, that your social desires are tied to your prestige and accomplishments. E.g., you can only join that new circle if your career rises a rung or two. You’ll succeed, you’ll climb that ladder. Chase money Thursday/Friday. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Optimism makes Sunday happy, but your energy and charisma temporarily ebb to a low point until Jan. 20. So stay in the background, rest, be charitable, deal with government and/or institutions, fulfil neglected obligations, seek spiritual enlightenment. These areas are emphasized Monday to Wednesday noon – a new project might begin, or you might perceive how these areas are in need of deep change (a long, deep change – now to 2024). Your legal situation or “world view” might be preventing such change. Think! Career and money face super luck Monday/Tuesday – start something! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: December’s delays are finished, so charge after your goals and wishes. Be ambitious Sunday; deal with higher-ups. Your luck soars Monday to Wednesday dawn, especially in legal, publishing, far travel, international, educational, media and cultural ventures, and particularly where these involve social/romantic wishes or career ambitions. Whatever happens, don’t be skeptical: love, embrace, start things! Realize your social goals are changing: promote this. Rest, retreat late Wednesday to Friday. Your charisma and energy soar in time for a New Year’s celebration. You’ll be feted! timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014

Winter will be here for a while, and with the snow and cold weather comes the need to make sure your tires are safe for driving. Here are some questions to ask yourself as you prepare for a couple more months of icy roads: ❚ Do I have a good set of four winter tires? ❚ Have I had my tire alignment checked? ❚ Am I monitoring my tire pressure regularly? ❚ Have my winter tires been stored in a cool, dry place? ❚ Have I ensured last year’s tires still have the traction I need, and if not, have I recycled those tires through a used-tires program collector? If you’ve answered yes to all of these questions, you’re ready to (slowly and safely) hit the road. Happy driving. — News Canada

Camry still the gold standard The Toyota Camry Hybrid pioneered the hybridization of the modern mid-sized sedan and it has already outlived a couple of its competitors. Its hybrid-drive system transforms one of our favourite family sedans into an eco-friendly, fuel-sipping people mover. Unlike the Prius, the Camry is not a ground-up hybrid design, so some compromises are inevitable. One is the hybrid battery pack, which takes away a chunk of trunk space. There’s still room for a couple of golf bags, so it’s not a big sacrifice. In both power output and price, Toyota has cleverly positioned the Camry Hybrid between the fourcylinder and V6 gas engine versions of the car. This may partially explain why it has already outlived both the Honda Accord Hybrid and the Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid. These two departed competitors also have another thing in common, motor-assist or mild hybrid systems. Current competitors, the Ford Fusion and Nissan Altima, are both full hybrids, enabling the vehicles to be driven in a pure electric mode without the gas engine. In the bigger picture, however,

hybrid vehicle sales are still a fraction of total vehicle sales. Plug-in hybrid and new full-electric vehicle technologies are on the horizon, so it will be interesting to see which technology will be the most popular with consumers. Camry Hybrid has already built a solid reputation for reliability and comes with some minor external styling changes and new interior features. A new-look front grille and bumper are the most prominent visual changes. To help owners make the most of the hybrid-drive system’s frugal use of fuel, there’s a new instantaneous fuel economy meter. In addition, there are some new convenience features such as power windows with driver’s auto up/down function, a satellite radio antenna with pre-wire USB connectivity and an available backup camera. Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive system is now in more than one million vehicles worldwide. In the Camry Hybrid, a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine is mated to an electric motor/generator and they can deliver a combined output that’s equivalent to 187-horsepower.

CAMRY HYBRID: Moon roof package ups price to $32K panel that indicates the Camry Hybrid is ready to move. Initial movement is typically by noiseless electrical

propulsion, which is a little strange at first. And it can also be a surprise to those who are standing in prox-

imity. THE SCORE In addition to offering outstanding fuel efficiency, the

Toyota Camry Hybrid has also earned a solid reputation for quality and long-term durability and is the

benchmark by which all competitors are judged. — David Chao and Bob McHug

Large Inventory of Vehicles to Choose From 123110

An advantage of the hybrid-drive system is that the hightorque qualities of the electric motor can be utilized at any time for a quick power surge. So it can provide engine response and acceleration that’s normally associated with a larger engine. My test Camry Hybrid came with the moon roof package, which upped the price to $32,400. A leather and navigation package that contains leather upholstery; a fourway power adjustable passenger seat; heated front seats; a backup camera and a DVD-based navigation system with a seven-inch LCD display screen are also available. THE LOOKS The new grille and front bumper allow a larger lower intake opening and larger projector beam headlights. It also includes a prominently positioned extra-large Toyota emblem on a front that blends nicely with an attractively sculptured hood. THE INSIDE Roomy and comfortable, the Camry Hybrid’s interior leaves a reviewer with little to complain about ... or get too excited about. There are lots of handy storage places, too, and the glove box is generously sized. The standard cloth upholstery fabric is treated with a Fraichir process, which contains a natural silk-based moisturizing component that gives it a supersoft feel. Longer front seat cushions that offer more thigh support would be nice. Rear set leg and head room is very good and the split rear seatback also folds down to reveal a small pass-through from the trunk. THE DRIVE Camry Hybrid has a push-button keyless ignition/start system. So the key/fob can stay in your pocket (or purse), which is very handy. Not hearing an engine fire up after depressing the

ignition button was an adjustment. You have to watch for a small ‘ready’ light on the instrument
