1 Surrey celebrates 2010 Olympics The biggest Surrey story in 2010 was the city’s 13-day Olympic party in Holland Park. Council approved spending $3.5 million on a celebration to remember to mark the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. More than 50 musical acts graced two stages at the free blowout, including top names like Blue Rodeo, Randy Bachman, Jully Black and 54-40 to name but a few. The Mounties brought the world renowned RCMP Musical Ride to town for two shows daily under the Holland Park big top. It was the biggest single hit of the event with fans lining up early to score free tickets for the show. When the smoke cleared and it was all over, an estimated quar-

ter-million people made it down to Holland Park over the 13 days, prompting Mayor Dianne Watts to call the party a huge success. The Holland Park blowout was preceded by a two-day torch relay through Surrey, White Rock and North Delta. On Feb. 8, the torch arrived in Surrey where 175 people were ready to carry the Olympic symbol through the city’s neighbourhoods with Olympic gold medalist Daniel Igali running the last leg to light the cauldron in Holland Park. The torch made its way into White Rock on Feb. 9 and then on to North Delta later that day on its journey to its ultimate destination in downtown Vancouver. – Ted Colley

Hiebert ‘should give it back’

SURREY – Outrage is growTed COLLEY Staff Reporter ing over Conservative MP Russ Hiebert’s free spending ways. Hiebert (South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale) racked up a total of $637,093 in expenses during the 2008-09 federal fiscal year, the largest amount among B.C. MPs and second highest in all of Canada. The national average was $432,728. The totals include amounts spent to operate MPs’ offices in Ottawa and at home and pay staff, advertising, printing and travel. Hiebert said his expenses were higher because he uses taxpayer money to fly his wife and two small daughters back and forth between Ottawa and his home riding. Hiebert spent $214,360 on out-of-riding travel in 2008-09. “The reason my expenses were near the top that year is because, as the parents of two young girls, my wife Andrea and I are committed to keeping our family

together,” the MP wrote in an email. “That means we travel together the weeks Parliament is in session.” Hiebert went on to say his spending was within parliamentary guidelines for such things, an assertion confirmed by the Speaker’s office in Ottawa. Even so, the Now spoke to several constituents who weren’t pleased to hear their MP was spending so much money. “I think it’s terrible. I make less than $40,000 a year and I don’t think I should be paying all that so he can drag his family around the country,” said Don Jerrison of White Rock. “Those guys are already paid too much anyway. He should give it back.” Jerrison isn’t alone in his protest of Hiebert’s spending habits. Jay Fettinger is president of the White Rock & South Surrey Chamber of Commerce and founder of the Fettinger Investment Group.

see HIEBERT page 3 #

ast year was a tough one financially for many Canadians as our country was caught up in a global recession. While many of us cut back our spending, feared for our jobs and held on desperately waiting for an end to the downturn, Conservative MP Russ Hiebert piled up roughly four times his annual salary in expenses – $637,093 for the year. Most of that, $422,733, went to paying for office space and staff, office equipment, printing and other costs associated with the job. A little more than one-third of the total, however, went to the cost of travel between his riding (South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale) and Ottawa for Hiebert and his wife and two children. Hiebert appears puzzled that anyone would be offended at him spending $214,360 ferrying himself and his family back and forth. He wants to keep his family together and if that’s what it costs well, that’s what it costs. We agree with the many Canadians who have responded to Hiebert’s high roller spending with outrage. Spending that kind of money during a recession is a slap in the face to ordinary Canadians. Hiebert’s party campaigned on promises to reduce government spending and eliminate waste in Ottawa. When the Conservatives were in opposition, they relentlessly attacked the Liberals for their “sense of entitlement.” Hiebert defends his spending by saying it meets the rules set out for such things. It’s true, he’s broken no rules, but while obeying the letter of the law, he has abandoned the spirit of the Conservative Party of Canada in opposition. His new mantra is: I’m entitled, the money’s there, I’m taking it, deal with it. Mr. Hiebert, you don’t want to be separated from your family. Fair enough. But do you really expect the Canadian taxpayer to pick up this kind of tab year after year? Maybe this isn’t the job for you.

2 Russ racks up the expenses One of 2010’s biggest stories was the revelation that local Conservative MP Russ Hiebert racked up expenses totalling $637,000 the in previous fiscal year. Hiebert’s expense claim was second highest in the land and a whopping 50 per cent more than the national average of $432,000. The numbers stirred outrage among many voters, although the South Surrey-White RockCloverdale politician had his supporters, too. Hiebert defended his spending by noting he has a young family he likes to keep together. More than $214,000 of his 2008-09 expenses, he said, were spent on airline tickets flying his wife and children back and forth between

his riding and Ottawa. Parliamentary rules allow MPs to shuttle their families back and forth on the public tab although even Hiebert admitted most don’t do so. Hiebert also argued it was unfair to compare his expenses to those of MPs in Central Canada who don’t have to pay as much to travel as those in B.C. “It’s a lot of money,” Hiebert replied, “but that’s the cost of democracy in a country a large as Canada.” The uproar from angry taxpayers continued despite his attempt to justify his expenses and a few days later, a surprised and chastened Hiebert said he would reduce future claims. – Ted Colley

3 Laura Szendrei murdered in park Laura Szendrei’s murder hit North Delta like a hammer. Sharing their border with Surrey – which has had more than its share of high-profile crimes over the years – North Deltans used to feel somewhat impervious to the type of crime that sometimes plagues the other side of Scott Road. But their illusion shattered on Sept. 25, when Laura Szendrei, a popular 15-year-old Burnsview student, was viciously beaten in broad daylight while walking through Mackie Park. She died in hospital the following day, leaving a community to grieve and parents fearing for the safety of their own schoolchildren as the killer was, and still remains, at large. Waves of police investigators swept through the streets, parks and alleys neighbouring Mackie

Park, searching for clues and canvassing residents for tips. Public forums were held, Mayor Lois Jackson had the park cleared of concealing brush, and the media descended on North Delta en masse. More than 55 Delta police officers, with the help of other police departments, have sifted through hundreds of tips but have yet to reveal a significant break in this unsolved murder. – Tom Zytaruk

5 Fury over HST hits home The HST uproar of 2010 made itself felt locally as voters voiced their displeasure with the tax. Led by former premier Bill Vander Zalm, the anti-HST bandwagon rolled into our part of the world where thousands lined up to sign a petition supporting a referendum on the tax. In White Rock, long a safe seat for ever popular Liberal MLA Gordon Hogg, hundreds jammed the Star of the Sea hall for an anti-HST rally and to put their names to the petition, more than enough to meet the requirement for a referendum. Two months later, Hogg, who had defended the tax, found himself on a list of Liberal MLAs targetted in a recall campaign launched by the anti-HST crowd.

Much of the anger over the HST was caused by the public’s belief that Gordon Campbell and the Liberals lied during the last provincial election when they said they would not implement the tax, only to embrace it just weeks after being returned to power. The successful referendum campaign, coupled with the government’s announcement the vote wouldn’t come for nearly a year, made itself felt in Surrey. Merchants worried about its effect on their bottom lines and the city was expecting a spike in building activity during the first half of the year before the tax, which applies to new construction, went into effect. – Ted Colley

MUKHTIAR

Two big political birds were knocked down in 2010, but not with the same stone. It was the controversial Harmonized Sales Tax that cooked Premier Gordon Campbell’s goose. The 34th premier of B.C. resigned in November, after his popularity plummeted to nine per cent in opinion polls. “When public debate becomes focused on one person, instead of what is in the best interest of British Columbians, we have lost sight about what is important,” Campbell said in his resignation speech on Nov. 3. “When that happens, it’s time for a change.” His successor will be chosen in February. Surrey-Cloverdale MLA Kevin Falcon is one of five candidates seeking his job.

A life-long political and one-time mayor of Vancouver, Campbell became leader of the B.C. Liberal Party in 1993 and led the party to victory in 2001 to the present. One month later, opposition NDP leader Carole James resigned. It wasn’t a controversial tax that knocked her off her perch, though – it was party infighting. She resigned at the behest of 13 of the 34 MLAs in her caucus. Her replacement will be selected in April. Like Campbell, James was no political neophyte. She’d been leader of B.C.’s NDP party since 2003, when it had only two MLAs and was still reeling from an historic whumping at the polls. – Ted Colley

6 Border guard on trial for sex crimes Nobody likes abuse of power except, of course, those who are doing so. And when they get caught, it makes for big news. One of the guilty, former Surrey border guard Daniel Greenhalgh, made numerous headlines this past fall when his breach of trust and multiple sex assault trial was heard in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster. The jury deliberated for less than four hours before finding Greenhalgh guilty of three counts of sexual assault and one count of breach of trust. He’d illegally strip-searched four young women, sexually assaulting three of them, at the Peace Arch border crossing in 2007. The court heard Greenhalgh threatened the

women with detention or a criminal record to get them to strip then touched their privates as they stood in their underwear. The assaults took place in a construction zone and men’s public washroom near the Peace Arch border crossing. The former Canadian border guard will be sentenced Feb. 11. – Tom Zytaruk

8 Watts’ controversial crash

7 Panghali murder trial The Mukhtiar Panghali murder trial was as compelling as it was horrific. The former Surrey schoolteacher was tried in New Westminster late in 2010 for second-degree murder and interfering with a dead body, in connection with the 2006 strangulation of his pregnant wife Manjit Panghali, also a Surrey schoolteacher. Crown prosecutor Dennis Murray alleged that Panghali killed his wife, staged her disappearance and then burned her body on a remote beach in Delta. Panghali had reported his wife as missing 26 hours after she failed to return from a prenatal yoga class in South Surrey – a class he mistakenly thought was in Whalley. The Crown charged that he planted her abandoned

car in that neighbourhood, to put police off his trail. Panghali’s defence lawyer, Michael Tammen, maintained that the Crown’s case was founded exclusively on circumstantial evidence and no concrete proof. Did he do it? Justice Heather Holmes has to decide. She is expected to deliver her verdict on Jan. 14. – Tom Zytaruk

Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts was injured in a car accident on April 23 when another driver ran a red light at 128th Street and 24th Avenue. Watts and husband, Brian, were returning home from a civic event around 11 p.m. when the collision occurred. Both were taken to hospital and later released. Watts suffered a cracked rib and internal injuries, while her husband was shaken up. Shawnene Redekopp, 55 at the time of the incident, was driving the other vehicle and suffered more serious injuries. She was taken to Vancouver General Hospital, where surgeons removed her damaged spleen and treated her for a swollen pancreas, broken ribs, a broken

collarbone and fluid in her lungs, her husband, Les, told the Now. Police said Watts was driving the couple’s Cadillac SUV eastbound on 24th Avenue when it collided with Redekopp’s sedan after it entered the intersection on a red light. Redekopp was driving north on 128th Street. Her car wound up on the sidewalk in front of Crescent Park Elementary school. Les Redekopp questioned how police could be so sure about who was at fault so quickly after the crash. He contended that, since his wife was hit broadside by Watts’ car, it was more likely the mayor ran the light. The police determined it was Redekopp who failed to stop. – Ted Colley

9 Shooting at Sikh temple A simmering feud between a Surrey radio station and two local businessmen led to a shooting outside the Guru Nanak Gurdwara. The violence erupted around noon on Aug. 28 following a wedding at the Scott Road temple that was attended by about 1,000 guests. Contractor Harjit Singh Atwal, 54, was shot in the thigh in the temple’s parking lot. After the shooting, Surrey RCMP visited the offices of Radio India in Newton looking for managing director Maninder Gill but he wasn’t there. Gill, 47, later turned himself in to police. Gill, who has no criminal record, was charged with discharging a firearm with intent to wound or disfigure, aggravated assault and a string of related firearms offences. After a date in Surrey provincial court, Gill was released on

$200,000 bail. Atwal had reportedly been feuding with the Punjabi-language radio station over an alleged defamation and had recently filed a lawsuit against it. About three weeks later, things took a bizarre twist. Gill’s house in swanky Panorama Ridge was sprayed with bullets on Sept. 20. According to police, the house was struck by at least eight bullets. No one was hurt. “It sounded like machine gun fire,” said one neighbour at the time. In a further twist, Atwal last month filed a claim in B.C. Supreme Court alleging that Surrey Coun. Tom Gill, who is also Maninder Gill’s nephew, had defamed him in comments he made to a reporter during an interview about the temple shooting. – Marisa Babic

10 White Rock’s water woes Water, water everywhere but there wasn’t a drop to drink in White Rock during the fading days of summer – at least not from the city’s official water source. Fraser Health officials issued a boil water advisory on Aug. 20 after authorities discovered lowlevel E. coli contamination in the supply, a move that had residents boiling tap water and emptying store shelves of bottled water. The contamination was discovered during routine testing that’s conducted monthly. Some strains of E. coli can cause severe abdominal cramps and in rare cases, kidney failure. Unlike the rest of the Metro Vancouver, White Rock’s water is supplied through EPCOR, a private company. The water comes from a groundwater source called the Sunnyside Uplands aquifer, and is supplied by six wells that range in depth from 200 to 500 feet. After extensive investigation, an EPCOR official said that an examination of the six wells and three reservoirs revealed that a

reservoir at Merklin Street was the source of the contamination. Following a series of stringent tests, Fraser Health lifted the boil water advisory on Sept. 1. No reports of illness related to the water contamination were reported. – Marisa Babic

❚ NEWS ❚YEAR IN REVIEW

Watts is our pick for Newsmaker of 2010

T

he Now’s Newsmaker of the Year just missed the podium in a competition to choose the world’s best mayor. Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts finished fourth in the international City Mayors Foundation World Mayor competition. Citizens around the world are invited to vote online for their favourite mayor. Those who chose Watts praised her for guiding the transformation of Surrey into a vibrant, progressive city. Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Luis Ebrard Casaubon topped the list. Watts presided over several momentous events and announcements during 2010 the most widely praised of those being the huge city-sponsored party at Surrey’s Olympic celebration site in Holland Park. The city put up $3.5 million to stage the events. City residents were presented with 13 days of free entertainment and live broadcasts on oversized television screens of Olympic action. The party’s highlight was undoubtedly the RCMP Musical Ride, but headliner musical acts like Blue Rodeo, Randy Bachman and 54-40 drew huge crowds of their own. Holland Park was also the site of Surrey’s own Olympic cauldron, lit by gold medalist Daniel Igali who carried the torch on its final leg through the city.

It was quite an exciting year for Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts. The Olympic celebrations were rivaled only by Surrey’s massive Canada Day party and Fusion Festival, also staged in Holland Park. Watts also presided over the city’s huge investment in a renewed Whalley as construction began on a new $36-million library and the announcement of a new $50-million city hall scheduled for completion in 2013. Both projects are intended to bolster

the city’s push to revitalize Whalley and create City Centre – Surrey’s downtown – and to attract more private investment there. In December, city council approved borrowing $200 million over five years – placing Surrey in debt for the first time in 25 years – for these and other projects to be built throughout the city. Watts also took on the owner of a Whalley porn theatre and forced him

to close the doors, joined other Metro Vancouver mayors in opposing a TransLink plan to use property taxes to fund mammoth transit projects and joined the council majority in approving one secondary suite in every Surrey single-family dwelling. It was also Watts’ year to be shaken up, first in an Easter earthquake while visiting Anaheim, California in April. Watts and her daughters escaped injury when the Magnitude 7.2 quake struck. Later the same month, the mayor was again rattled when she collided with another driver in a South Surrey intersection. Watts sustained a cracked rib and internal injuries, while the other driver was hospitalized with more serious injuries. Investigators concluded the other driver ran a red light. Still in April, the mayor became embroiled in yet another Vaisakhi parade controversy over Sikh separatism and the following month saw Surrey’s Electrical Fire Safety Inspection program – designed to rid the city of grow-ops – struck down by a B.C. Court of Appeals panel because it violates residents’ Charter rights. Finally, in November Watts announced she would not run for the leadership of the B.C. Liberals despite polling which suggested she could win it in a walk if she tried. – Ted Colley

All residents and business owners are responsible under City By-Laws to treat/clear any accumulated snow and or ice from sidewalks located adjacent to their property as soon as possible to ensure the safety of pedestrians. When clearing sidewalks of snow please do not push snow onto the street as snow ploughs may end up pushing the snow onto the sidewalk area. This may also present a hazard to motorists or cause vehicle access issues. It’s usually best to shovel the snow towards or onto your property if possible.

Let’s shake up democracy a bit with some radical ideas Our political system is a sort of stew. It’s made up of all sorts of ingredients, thrown in by kings and prime ministers and radicals. Basically, anything that didn’t stick in the craw of the powerful has been allowed to Matthew CLAXTON stay in the pot. The first ingredient was monarchy, a.k.a. hereditary dictatorship, like they have in North Korea. Then things like the Magna Carta were added, and Henry VIII and Oliver Cromwell added some more meat to the stock, and finally we sort of slid awkwardly into democracy. So our system is contingent. We’ve made it up as we went along. So why not remake it? Here are a few not terribly serious ideas for government reform. Perfect gender parity. Our Parliament and our provincial legislatures have a lot more Y chromosomes than the population at large. In Canada, women make up a very small majority of the population (thanks to women’s longer lifespans), but men still dominate politics. Why don’t we split it right down the middle? Cut the number of ridings in half. Each will elect two members, a man and a woman. To make things more interesting, we’ll split up the

ferent from our elected leaders, exactly? And on the plus side, it will reduce political parties to lobbying groups. Voting requirements. I’m not particularly nostalgic for the days when only white male property owners could vote. But are all voting requirements created equal? For example, we could have everyone answer this simple question: “Governments can give me both lower taxes and higher levels of services, Y/N.” Anyone who votes yes is banned from voting until they complete a math course. We could also base it on being useful to your community. Only those who do 100 hours of charity work can vote. This would, of course, include some 12-year-olds. But I’d rather have a 12-year-old who did that much charity work allowed to vote than a 70-year-old Scrooge. As I said, I’m not actually serious. But are any of these ideas that much weirder than picking one guy and believing that he can somehow represent everyone, including the people who voted against him? Is it weirder than having parties that act the same, 90 per cent of the time, but insist that their opponents are evil baby-eaters? Are they weirder than democracy as we know it? Matthew Claxton is a reporter with the Langley Advance, a sister paper to the Now.

voting too: in even-numbered elections, men vote for male candidates and women vote for female candidates. In odd-numbered elections, women only vote for male candidates, men vote for women. Inverted pyramid. The provinces are the children of the federal government, and the cities are the children of the provinces. Often the abused, red-headed stepchildren, if you listen to politicians at the lower levels complaining. So why not reverse that? We’ll give the big powers to draft criminal and business laws to the towns and cities, and the federal government will be reduced to handling borders and running the mint. Sure, every city would have a radically different economy, quality of life, and social structure. But we might as well have some say in how our little corner of the world is run. Lottocracy. When the ancient Greek city states wanted a new dog catcher, they didn’t vote for him. They drew lots. If you picked the wrong-coloured pebble, it was your job. Why not do the same for our Parliament? Toss in the names of everyone eligible to run. Select 300 to 500 random Canadians. Get them to sit down and hash out issues, with experts to give them as much data as possible. Will some of them be stupid, irrational, or bigoted? Well yes, but how will that be any dif-

Build Surrey debt a sound investment for future in Metro Vancouver over the next 20 years will happen south of the Fraser. Surrey can be well positioned to be the leader in economic development, job growth and prosperity in the region. By creating jobs and investment locally, we also have the added benefit of reducing the stress on our transportation infrastructure as more and more residents south of the Fraser can work locally. I, for one, think this is a sound investment in our future.

Surrey should have cash before starting projects The Editor, Re: “Surrey residents not convinced that $200M debt is a good idea,” the Now, Dec. 14. You need to spend money to make money – this works in some cases, but on these projects it is not a money-maker. The city should have the money in hand before starting any of these projects. The interest will add an enormous amount to the debt. I wonder why the governments always think spending more than they have is a good thing? They do sound like great projects but not good enough to put our great city into such high debt. Get the money first, like most of the population. And then work on the projects.

Charging drivers for air? What’s next, I wonder... The Editor, I was out of the country for a few months and after arriving back I discovered that two of the tires on my vehicle were in need of a puff or two of air. I proceeded to a local gas sta-

tion (I’ve long since stopped referring to them as “service” stations) only to be confronted with a coin box attached to the air supply unit and into which I was expected to deposit a loonie. Being of a somewhat thrifty nature, I went to another gas station only to be met with the same type of coin box. I continued my search until I finally came across an air supply unit that required only 50 cents. At that point, I swallowed my notion of thrift and out of necessity, purchased some air. Is it only me, or is there something intrinsically not quite right about charging for air? What commodity of nature’s bounty will we be expected to pay for next, I wonder?

Compassion enables victims to forgive and live again The Editor, Re: “Victims of crime: we’re ‘snubbed again’ while convicts get Christmas goodie bags,” the Now, Dec. 21. I read your story with interest and sadness. I have great empathy for the spokesman for Families Against Crime and Trauma. I, too, was a victim of crime and trauma. Today, I only relate to change – what can we do to bring about change? That is because I went through a process of reconciliation that brought me face to face, eye to eye, with my offender, where I was given the ability to speak my mind, and speak about what happened to me. The process opened up my mind, my senses, so that I could finally understand why I became a victim and why they were the offender, and to finally forgive the person who offended. Without humanity and compassion – even for those people who offend, to give them human dignity and a way out of the depth of their fall – we as a human species will fail.

Compassion changes people. This small act doesn’t mean that what this person did was right, or acceptable, just that they might one day know what they did was wrong, and take responsibility for what they did and become functioning, giving, caring people who can exist within our society. I would hope and pray that the day these offenders are released, or while they were imprisoned they will learn values, will know the difference between good and evil, between compassion and revenge and become productive citizens.

The Editor, Re: “Surrey residents not convinced that $200M debt is a good idea,” the Now, Dec. 14. There has been some opposition – and I believe misconception – to the idea of borrowing money to help pay for the Build Surrey program. While this is an ambitious multi-year plan, the investment today will have massive benefits in years to come. Firstly, from the budget that was presented at council, the city is planning to borrow $53 million, not $200 million, for the Build Surrey project although it has the ability to borrow considerably more. Secondly, this project is not just for downtown Surrey, but for a comprehensive infrastructure plan, which includes all areas of Surrey and a wide variety of projects from parks and community centres to the library and City Hall. The City of Surrey is in a unique position to grow from a bedroom suburb of Vancouver into a vibrant metropolitan core in the region. Infrastructure development in Surrey’s downtown and throughout the entire city will provide a catalyst for economic growth, private sector investment and an enhanced quality of life for all Surrey residents. Yes, the Build Surrey program is a huge undertaking, but it includes every community in Surrey and is going to ensure that the infrastructure that the city needs is developed in the near future, in today’s dollars and not 10 or 15 years down the road when these facilities and infrastructure will cost millions more. I think the mayor and council are showing leadership and vision of what Surrey can become. By investing now, we are ensuring growth and prosperity in the city. The funding formula includes secondary suites revenue, parking revenue, gaming revenue and a variety of other sources, including the Surrey Development Corp., which means funding this program is not going to require an increase in property taxes. As a resident and business owner, that makes sense to me. About 70 per cent of the growth

Care home costs go up but the service doesn’t

The Editor, My mother is a resident in a Fraser Health Authority-funded care home. In January, the FHA has decided that my mother should pay another $102 more per month for her care than she did in 2010. My mother receives a total of $1,807.78 per month from CPP, OAP, pension from my deceased father and a small annuity from the income from her sold home. This increase now makes the amount she pays to the care home (FHA) $1,602.26, leaving her $205.52 per month to pay for her prescription drugs, averaging $60 per month, and incidentals, leaving her in a position of having to do without some required necessity of life. I am not necessarily criticizing the care home, but I have seen no increase of the staffing of the floors or otherwise increased service. In fact, I see the staff suffering because they care so much about the residents and they are trying so hard to see to their needs. This leaves me to wonder who benefits from these increases in rates that mother pays.

But most exciting of all, live lava splattered around this vent, activity not seen since 1982! Its glow can still be seen at night!” Road closures prevent us from proceeding down Chain of Craters Road to the Pu’u o’o cone, its lava flowing continuously for more than 27 years. We recalled marching across endless day-old lava fields there not so long ago. Brilliant iridescent rainbows shimmered on the new, shiny-black lava. Guides had shown us Pele’s tears, cooled, jet-black lava droplets and Pele’s hair, spun volcanic glass strands strewn across acrid, pahoehoe lava. Awestruck, we’d later picnicked on a ledge above crimson lava dripping into the crashing turquoise Pacific surf below, spitting white steam plumes into the air. Our last hike of the day crosses bleak landscapes along Devastation Trail, where Kilauea Iki’s searing lava fountains reduced a thriving native ohi’a forest to stark charcoal skeletons in 1959. Still wondering what had awakened Madame Pele this time, we leave her smoky rift zones and ebony wastelands behind.

In lush contrast, luxuriant rainforest achirp with flitting red and yellow honeycreepers surrounds Thurston Lava Tube, another worthwhile stop. Along the paved trail, we’re dwarfed by oversized philodendrons, towering ohia trees strung with trailing vines and gigantic tree ferns. Over a small hill and down stone steps, we enter the mammoth tunnel winding beneath aged lava fields. Visualizing scarlet lava rivers running to the ocean through this 500-year-old channel, we happily splash through cool puddles created by the seeping moisture! Before heading back to Kona, we detour to Volcano Winery outside the park. With sips of Volcano Blush, we toast Kilauea whose volcanic activity thrills multitudes of curious travelers like us every year.

Leaving Kona at dawn, my Chris MILLIKAN family and I set off to explore Now contributor natural wonders in Volcanoes National Park. Hiking and sightseeing throughout Hawaii’s diverse wilderness, we reacquaint ourselves with Kilauea, the Big Island’s active volcano. About halfway there, a brief pit stop at Punalu’u provides an unexpected delight. As we watch, green turtles graze in the shallows, others bask along the unusual black sand beach. At the bakeshop down the road, robust local coffees and fresh malasada doughnuts filled with warm papaya cream make welcome breakfasts. At the visitor center just inside the park, we bone up on volcano facts and up-to-date tips on flow happenings. Illustrated exhibits identify a surprising number of native plants and animals thriving in the volcanic barrens. Rangers offer guided interpretive hikes and supply us with detailed maps. Opting for the self-guided Sulphur Banks hike, one Ranger nods, “Depending on how much you linger, connecting trails will loop you back here in less than an hour.” Starting at the nearby Volcano Art Center, an easy paved trail leads us from dense foliage and out onto boardwalks zigzagging through the treeless Sulfur Banks. Here, seeping sulfuric gasses enshroud the landscape in these mystical coppery-red surroundings. Up ahead, we marvel at hundreds of tiny purple orchids growing amid thickets of feathery red blossoms. Returning to the car past stunted trees growing atop the crater, we’re ever alert to occasional steep drop-offs along this winding trail. Encircling Kilauea’s enormous “drive through” summit, Crater Rim Drive offers spectacular vantage points all along its 17-kilometres. We visit the Jaggar Museum and investigate Kilauea’s most current volcanic activity. Honking nene geese, Hawaii’s endangered state bird, escort us along the lava-rock pathway and up to the door. Inside this museum, must-see exhibits explain how volcanoes are studied and monitored, with equipment used by scientists past and present, working seismographs, climate maps and charred gear from scientists who got too close to molten lava! Murals dramatically depict ancient Hawaiians amid blistering eruptions. On a previous visit, we’d teetered along this massive caldera’s craggy lip and watched white tropicbirds float on thermals deep inside the volcano’s heart. Though crusted over since 1967, its boiling lava lake had once inspired Mark Twain to hike this same rim, high above legendary volcano goddess Pele’s home. As they’ve done for centuries, kahuna priests still place flower offerings on Pele’s doorstep, hoping to appease her blazing wrath.

❚ LIVING ❚FOOD

Trained chef warms to the wonders of slow-cooked fare When a slow Gwen RICHARDS cooker first Postmedia News entered Eric Akis’s kitchen — in the hands of his wife, who said she would be using it — the trained chef was less than impressed. The appliance was a symbol of outdated recipes, food cooked too long and dishes that involved frozen meatballs, a can of soup poured on top and abandonment for hours and hours. “I was in the, ‘Who would use a slow cooker?’ crowd for a while,” he says. The fact his latest cookbook focuses solely on delicious dishes made in a slow cooker — and tasty accompaniments — shows he’s had a serious change of heart. Everyone Can Cook Slow Cooker Meals (Whitecap, $24.95) offers updated and contemporary versions of recipes Akis had once been exposed to, along with ‘slow cooking 101’ information and safety tips. There’s still pork in mushroom sauce, but it bears no resemblance to its predecessor now that Akis has

updated it to use shiitake and portobello mushrooms. Getting to this point took a little prodding from outside sources. About five years ago, a grocery chain Akis develops recipes for told him their customers were looking for slow cooker recipes, as were readers of Victoria Times-Colonist, for which Akis is a columnist. Akis got down to work, pulling out the maligned appliance and creating a beef chili. One whiff after lifting the lid practically converted him. The book has a clean look and modern design, reflecting Akis’s aim to update how people approach slow cooking. Older recipes call for foods to cook between 10 and 12 hours, causing them to lose flavour. Modern recipes have shorter cooking times, taking advantage of new technology that allows programmable cookers to kick over to the keep-warm function when the cooking is done. ❚PHOTO/Ted Rhodes, Calgary Herald

Author and cook Eric Akis now cherishes his slow cooker, but this was not always the case.

Root vegetable soup with blue cheese Makes: 6 servings 4 3/4 cups (1.125 L) chicken or vegetable stock 2 tablespoons (25 mL) all-purpose flour 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 medium leek, white and pale green part only, cut in half lengthwise, washed and thinly sliced 1 medium parsnip, peeled, halved lengthwise and sliced 1 medium carrot, peeled, halved lengthwise and sliced 1 medium yam, peeled and cubed 1 tablespoons (15 mL) peeled, chopped fresh ginger 1 teaspoon (5 mL) ground cumin 1/4 teaspoon (1 mL) ground coriander pinch cayenne pepper pinch ground nutmeg salt and pepper to taste 1/4 pound (125 g) blue cheese, crumbled (See cook’s note) 2 tablespoons (25 mL) chopped fresh parsley Method: Place the stock and flour in your slow cooker and whisk until the flour is completely dissolved. Mix in the garlic, leek, parsnip, carrot, yam, ginger, cumin, coriander, cayenne and nutmeg. Cover and cook on the low setting for 6 hours, or until the vegetables are very tender. Puree the contents of the slow cooker with an immersion blender. (You could also puree the soup in a food processor or blender.) Thin the soup with a bit more stock if you find it too thick. Cover and cook for 10 minutes more, or until the soup is piping hot. Season the soup with salt and white pepper. Top bowls of the soup with crumbled blue cheese and chopped parsley. Cook’s note: Akis suggests that if you find

blue cheese too strong, consider using a soft goat cheese instead. Preparation time: 20 minutes. Slow cooker time: Six hours. Busy families looking for a mid-week fix for the time crunch can take advantage of dishes like the Sweet-and-Sour Pork with Ginger and Pineapple, which doesn’t require the additional step of browning the meat first. Those entertaining should try the lamb shanks braised with wine, citrus and spice. As Akis points out, you can start it in the morning, greet guests with cocktails and then just quickly finish off the dish and one or two sides for a complete meal. In fact, many of the recipes include suggestions for accompaniments, keying to those in the chapter on side dishes. Akis’s original impetus for his book series — now numbering six — came out of one reader’s comment that he had great recipes but could he “do something everyone can cook.” “People can forget how easy it can be if you’re willing to try and aren’t scared to fail a few times,” he says. Slow cooking, he adds, is easier than other methods, especially when it comes to the clean up. Outside of browning meat in some of the recipes, almost nothing is used besides the pot itself. Adding fresh ingredients at the end of the cooking also makes dishes come alive. The quick addition of arugula, pesto and a bit of goat cheese to romano beans cooked with tomatoes, for example, makes the meal more contemporary, Akis says. Having people using only a handful of recipes from a cookbook is not what he considers success, he adds. Every page should be stained from having it out on the counter and being used. “I want the book to get dirty,” he says.

Brie and tomatoes perk up sandwich Julian ARMSTRONG Postmedia News

Paninis with Tomatoes, Brie Cheese and Roquette Lettuce Serves 4

One of the best-looking vegetarian cookbooks to appear in recent times is Le Grand Livre de la Cuisine Vegetarienne, by Igor Brotto and Olivier Guiriec (Les Editions de l’Homme, $39.95), both teachers at Institut de tourisme et d’hotellerie du Quebec. Beautiful photographs in this French-language book are mouthwatering, and most of the 277 recipes are straightforward and varied. Once you have prepared the sundried tomatoes, useful for other dishes, too, this sandwich meal is easy to prepare in short order. 1/3 cup (75 mL) tomato pesto (recipe below) 1 red bell pepper, in strips 2 tablespoons (30 mL) olive oil 1 clove garlic 4 panini rolls, halved

5 ounces (150 g) brie cheese, sliced Salt and freshly ground pepper 1 cup (250 mL) roquette lettuce leaves Tomato pesto: Soak 8 ounces (240 g) sun-dried tomatoes in warm water, then drain and mash. Cook 2 cloves garlic and 4 anchovy filets in 2 tablespoons (30 mL) olive oil until golden, then add a handful of soft bread crumbs and cook another minute. Add tomatoes and use food processor to puree mixture. With motor running, pour in remaining oil little by little. Mixture may be refrigerated and used as a condiment on meat, fish or grilled vegetables. Grill or saute red pepper strips in oil until softened and add to olive oil along with garlic. Cut panini rolls in two. Spread with tomato pesto, and top with sliced brie and peppers. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Add lettuce. Heat gently and serve. – Montreal Gazette

❚ LIVING ❚FASHION

Style advice is only a click away

Want to know if Joanne LAUCIUS your fashion choices Postmedia News for that hot date/your sister’s garden wedding/the first day of school are hitting all the right notes? Topper A or B in case it gets chilly at the prom? Keep or donate? Should I buy these red tasselled peep-toe shoes? Don’t rely on your friends’ advice on these and other potentially volatile fashion dilemmas, when thousands of strangers are ready to tell you what they think before you head out on that date or to the cash register with a purchase you might regret. Take Fashism.com, a website cofounder Brooke Moreland calls “crowd sourcing with a fashion purpose.” The idea came to her in 2008. “I was shopping with my husband. I wasn’t sure about this vest I was about to buy. He would just say, ‘It’s good, let’s go.’ But I like to agonize and ask people’s opinions,” she says. So Moreland, who has a background in television editing, and her partner Ashley Granata, who used to work for Style.com, called a software developer about creating a website where people could post their fashion dilemmas and ask complete strangers what they think. “We want to provide good, constructive criticism,” she says. That means honest, not brutal. Moreland says users are good at poli-

cing each other, but unnecessarily cruel remarks get taken down from the site. Each “look” gets a percentage approval rating. The red tasselled peep-toes, for example, got a 34 per cent approval. In other words, two-thirds of users said, “Don’t even go there.” Meanwhile in Austin, Texas, marketing director Bob Perez and his wife, Martha, a software developer, teamed up with Anand Venkatrao, a Baylor University student and his sister, Gitanjali, who had experience with Guess in Los Angeles, to develop Love It or Lose It, an iPhone application that costs 99 cents at the Apple Store. “The idea came from my wife. She loves fashion. At the time, she didn’t have an iPhone, and said, ‘What would happen if you could take a picture of your fashion and send it to all your friends?’” says Bob Perez. “If you send to five people, you’ll get five different e-mails. We sort of supercharged that process.” Perez describes Love It or Lose It as “an instant fashion poll.” The app has exceeded his expectations, but he declines to divulge numbers. When Moreland first launched Fashism a year ago, she walked around New York, snapping photos and asking people to comment. Then the site attracted attention in the mainstream media, driving traffic onto it. It now

SUSTAINABLE REGION INITIATIVE ...

has about 10,000 registered users who provide photos, and more unregistered users who provide comment. “The average number of comments is 20. That’s insanely high for a social media site,” says Moreland.

BROOKE MORELAND/ “We want to provide good, constructive criticism.” An iPhone app for Fashism is in the works. Meanwhile, opinions are being sought on more than clothes; users ask for comments on hairstyles, shoes and glasses. One recent user asked about whether it was wise to buy a sleeveless colour-blocked dress at full price when fall is just around the corner. One commentator gave the dress the thumbs-up for looks, but nixed covering it up with a cardigan: “You could definitely wear it into the fall, but anything over it would muck up the lines. You need to be prepared to suffer for fashion and wear it as it was intended or skip it.” Fashism attracts about 80,000 visitors a month and has partnered with fashion brands and stores for giveaways according to a frequent-user points system, says Moreland. “It makes me feel good that we’re on to something.”

Not sure if those sunglasses go with a certain feather boa? You might want to check with the people reading Fashism.com or those linked to the iPhone app Love It or Lose It.

Pocket Cash, by Jim Marshall, Chronicle Books, 160 pages, $22.95. The clever title of this book in no way reflects the value of the photographs it contains because so many of these images are priceless. Jim Marshall had a collection of pictures of Johnny Cash from three decades to draw on, but for this book he focused on the mid-’60s to the mid-’70s. This was a turbulent era for Cash that saw him battling addiction and ultimately winning, then marrying the love of his life, June Carter.

In this second novel featuring Pike as the main character instead of his supporting role in Crais’ Elvis Cole novels, the ex-soldier is faced with the murder of a former squad member. For Pike the debt to his friend extends beyond the grave and the only path to take is the one that will lead to full retribution for the victims.

Start new year with a quick dip at Polar Bear Swim Amy Reid

Now Contributor

With New Year’s on the horizon, another annual event creeps near. It’s the annual polar bear swim and it’s not for the faint of heart. Hosted by the White Rock Lions Club, this year marks the event’s 41st anniversary. Don Miller, swim chairman of the event, said last year, they had about 350 people. They have seen up to 600 people in a given year. “It’s for the adventurous types,” he said. They see people from various places: Some from Langley, Surrey, White Rock and even people from the United States who are up visiting family. Miller said polar bear swims in general are popular. “In Vancouver at English Bay they get about 1,000 to 1,500 people.” The local nudist groups also have one: The Skinnydipper Recreation Club and the Surrey United Naturists host their “polar bare plunge” at 1 p.m. on New Year’s Day at Crescent Rock Beach in South Surrey. Visit club.skinnydipper. ca for more information. At the White Rock event, you will see people of all ages. Some people come dressed in sweat pants, some come in costume and some come in more traditional beach attire – bathing suits. So just how cold is it? “We’ve had good years, we’ve had windy years, even snow some years. But we’re hoping

Many people get dressed up for the annual Polar Bear Swim in White Rock, such as these people in 2007. for the rain,” Miller said, which would make it a bit warmer. Even so, it’s bound to be cold. The polar bear swim takes place at the rock,

just east of the pier. There is no cost to register. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the swim begins at noon.

“It doesn’t last long though,” Miller said. “People dissipate pretty quickly. They hurry to get home to their bath tub or hot tub.”

Be safe during New Year’s Eve festivities places,” she said, as there are concerns with date rape drugs and other toxins being put into drinks. Also be careful with cash and credit cards. “Alcohol tends to alter rational thinking and wallets can be easily lifted or dropped. There are criminals who wait all year for this evening when it is guaranteed that there will be a large selection of theft targets.” For that same reason, she said to never leave purses unattended. “Consider keeping money in a money belt.” It’s also important to consider your trans-

New Year’s Eve is a time for celebration. But with every celebration, comes the need to practise responsibility and to plan ahead. Julia Everett, community policing co-ordinator for the White Rock RCMP, provided some safety tips to keep in mind when embarking on your night out. While it might be obvious, it needs to be said: Avoid drinking too much alcohol because it can leave you vulnerable, as your

judgment may be impaired. She also said to stay away from hot spots, such as clubs and bars, at closing time when there is more likelihood of trouble. “Travel in groups for safety,” she said, and avoid isolated areas. “Be aware of your surroundings, don’t let cellphones or portable music devices distract you.” But she said it is important to always carry a cellphone in case of an emergency. Everett said people should never leave their drinks unattended. “Especially in public

portation options ahead of time, she said. “Assign a designated driver, or plan on taking a cab or transit. If necessary stay overnight at the party.” Pay extra attention to other drivers, especially at intersections, as there’s more of a chance that they may have been drinking. And if fireworks are part of the plan, ensure all individuals shooting them off are sober and observe safe handling. “As well, make sure the inebriated guests aren’t too close to the show. It’s recommend to always check with the local authority regarding the prevailing laws before using fireworks.” While there are many concerns to think about, don’t forget to enjoy the night.

New Year’s Resolutions

Why smokers need to try, try and try again

Quitting smoking successfully on a first attempt is one of the biggest myths that exists around giving up nicotine addiction, according to Canadian nurses experienced in smoking cessation interventions. For this reason, this new year, make a resolution to quit smoking, but do not think you have to do it all by yourself.

Smokers become ashamed “ that they are unable to

overcome their addiction, when addiction to nicotine is one of the hardest substance use dependencies to break.

Amanda Saunders

“Relapse is really quite common. “Smokers, loved ones of smokers, and health-care professionals need to understand that it takes between five and seven quit attempts for most smokers before one sticks,” says Karen Beaumont, a registered nurse with the Neepawa Health Unit in Manitoba and a participant in the National Smoking Cessation (SC) Initiative by the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario

Registered nurses advise smokers that they can break the addiction – for good. It may take a number of attempts to successfully quit smoking, but persistence is the key. (RNAO). The National SC Initiative is an expanded version of the RNAO’s successful Ontario-based SC program, which fosters the development of nurse “SC champions”

through workshops in smoking cessation best practices provided by experienced nurse facilitators. “We need to be there for smokers the first time they quit, and the 10th time they

quit and tell them over and over again that each time they are one step closer to being successful,” says Beaumont. It’s important to rid ourselves of the notion of failure around quitting smoking, and that smokers should be able to give up the addiction all on their own, adds Amanda Saunders, a health promotion nurse with Central Health in Gander, Nfld. “Smokers become ashamed that they are unable to overcome their addiction, when addiction to nicotine is one of the hardest substance use dependencies to break.” Smokers need a large number of supports in order to break the addiction, including resources like smokershelpline. ca and nicotine replacement therapies, says Saunders. Family members, in particular, need to be nonjudgmental supports during relapses and understand that se ver al attempts are merely part of the long-term process of quitting, she adds. Quitting smoking is not a single event but a process that involves a change in lifestyle, values, social circles, thinking and feeling patterns and coping skills. More information on these topics is available online at www.tobaccofreernao.ca.

Culinary resolutions for 2011 OnCooking

Ah, the start of a fresh year. What better time is there to make a pact with oneself to start anew? In the position Chef of a culinary DEZ instructor, I encounter many situations with people wanting to improve areas of the culinary arts within their home kitchens and lifestyles. If you are undecided about making a resolution, contemplate making one focusing on the culinary aspect in your life. The most common culinary

resolution would be one of dietetic boundaries. Many people have the aspiration to start the new year with a promise of either losing weight or getting in better physical shape. The change in what you consume on a daily basis will obviously influence your success, or lack thereof. Try making a resolution to yourself to investigate low-fat, low-carbohydrate, and/or high-protein cooking. This promise will involve educating yourself in these areas, and putting the acquired information into practice. Go to the library, research the internet, buy a cookbook and take a cooking class.

Maybe a more suited resolution would be to revamp the state of your pantry and the food supply in your kitchen. Perhaps you have always wanted to have a pantry that is more focused on your favourite cuisines. For example, someone who loves Italian and Greek cuisine would stock their pantry with varying types of olives, capers, tomatoes, grape leaves, olive oils, balsamic vinegars, etc. The refrigerator and freezer can also be co-ordinated to contain the perishables of the same cuisine. Motivation to focus more on cooking certain cuisines will start with having the ingredients at your fingertips. One can

even take this to the extreme in organization by creating labels and segregating areas in your pantry for different food groupings. The simplest of all culinary resolutions, however, would be to blow dust off your cookbooks and start making some new dishes. Whether it is of small or large proportions, we all have collections of cookbooks... with many of them going unused. Make it a goal in your home to open up a cookbook once or twice a week, and try a new recipe. If you choose to do this, make sure you are setting yourself up for success. Decide on and investigate the recipe prior to the date you plan on making it. Purchase the ingredients ahead of time, and ensure that you have the basic equipment and utensils necessary to successfully complete the task

at hand. This will help eliminate any stress that you may encounter during preparation. “Attitude is everything.” This is the best advice I can give you. Whatever you approach in life, from making a resolution, making new friends or making a new recipe, proceed in a positive fashion. You will always find what you are searching for. If you look for the positives in something or someone, you will always find them. The same applies if you are seeking out negatives. Be aware of what you are looking for and your experience will always be more rewarding. Send your food/cooking questions to dez@chefdez.com or P.O. Box 2674, Abbotsford, B.C., V2T 6R4. Detoxing has become a popular practice and if we could just take a tea or herbal supplement, we would all be free of bacteria, yeast, toxins and have perfect immune systems. But it is not that easy. First you have to decide which area to detox. Systems of elimination are the intestines, lungs, skin/lymph and organs such as liver and kidney. A live/dried blood analysis can help you determine your weak points. Heavy metals, accumulated waste matter leading to bowel inflammation, or toxic storage in the fatty tissue of the liver all lead to toxicity and a weakened immune system. Colon Hydrotherapy is a safe and effective way to remove accumulated toxic waste matter from the intestines. Chlorophyll infusions will eliminate bacterial conditions and infuse the intestines with Vitamin K to promote healing of inflamed tissue. Acupoint injection therapies using homeopathic products will stimulate and drain the lymphatic system. Infrared Sauna sessions will detox through the lymph and skin. Key supplements such as algaes, green concentrates, antioxidants, insoluble fibre and herbs will support the chosen detox therapies.

GORDON BROWN R.D. DENTURIST

Peter Slobin

Gordon Brown Denturist

Q How long do dentures last? A

I need hearing aids but have heard some negative comments about them. Are they worth trying?

This is a very common question, and the answer depends on many things. If the dentures are worn in your pocket, they will probably last forever, however dentures are and were meant to be worn in the mouth.

Yes, hearing aids are definitely worth trying. The numerous benefits to your quality of life almost always outweigh the few imperfections of hearing aids. Often, people with negative reactions have older hearing aids that use outdated technology, or they may be among a small minority of people whose hearing loss is less treatable with hearing aids. Also remember that it is human nature to focus on what is not working well, even though these same people may be appreciating many advantages from their hearing aids.

The best thing denture wearers can do if their denture is more than 3 years old and it has not been looked at by a dental professional, is to call our office. I’d be happy to see you and give you some complimentary advice. Don’t wait until you feel like something is wrong - that’s how irreversible damage to the structure that supports the denture can occur, and that is exactly what we would like to prevent. Call us today for your complimentary consultation.

The fact is that overall satisfaction with hearing aids has significantly improved over the years as technology has advanced, and the vast majority of people are quietly enjoying the new life experiences hearing aids bring.

CLARKE, Dr. Daphne Angela 1924 - 2010

Daphne died on Wednesday, December 8 at Surrey Memorial Hospital. Daphne was predeceased by her parents, her sister Dorothy Brugman (Herman). Her sole surviving relative is her nephew, Dennis Brugman, his wife Joyce and their daughter Maureen (Mo). She leaves to mourn her passing a wide circle of friends and former colleagues from the Delta School District, where Daphne served as a school psychologist (PhD, 1974, University of Oregon). Daphne will be particularly missed by her special friends, Dr. Patricia Crehan, Dorothy and Merle Gardner and Vivian Corse. Her beloved dog “Truffles” has been adopted by a close friend of Patricia’s and is reportedly bonding very well with his new “Doggy Mum.” In accordance with Daphne’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Instead, there will be a gathering of her friends and colleagues at Daphne’s home sometime in January 2011 to share stories and memories. Daphne made clear that she wanted this get-together to be “a cheerful and happy occasion.” In the event of inclement weather, the gathering wold be re-schedule. Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

❚AUTOMOTIVE ❚MONEY

Top five insurance myths

With every New Vehicle purchased from DECEMBER 1ST to DECEMBER 31ST…

Not necessarily. Insurers look at things like repair costs, theft frequency and its previous claims history when determining a car’s rate—not the number of doors. ❚ Parking tickets will affect your insurance rate.

❚ Car colour affects your premium. False. It doesn’t matter if your car is blue, red, silver, white, or black, your rate for that make and model will be the same. ❚ Two-doors cost more to insure than four-doors.

RECEIVE FREE OIL CHANGES FOR LIFE!*

Parking tickets do not count against your insurance, but unpaid fines might affect your ability to renew your licence or licence plate. In extreme cases, it could even result in a licence suspension. ❚ Getting a speeding ticket means your rates will go up. It depends. Your first minor speeding ticket (typically under 45 km/h over the limit) may not affect your insurance rate. But get two or three and you’ll likely pay more. Any faster, like a major speeding ticket and your rates go up for sure. ❚ The rate you pay is the same no matter which insurer you have coverage with. Auto insurance premiums across insurance companies are not the same. In fact, each insurer’s car insurance rates are so unique to them that it’s pretty safe to say that no two are alike. www.newscanada.com

❚AUTOMOTIVE ❚SAFETY

Keep your distance from other drivers

In a recent Michelin survey, more than 18 per cent of Canadians said that they do not trust other drivers. Some people may feel they have completely mastered the art of win-

ter driving, but beware. No one is safe from dangerous weather and road conditions. Whether the road is wet, icy or snow-covered, responsible drivers drive defensively, slow

down, and leave even more space than usual between their vehicle and the one ahead. For more details and plenty of other tips on how to adopt simple, effective driving tech-

niques on the road this winter, make a full stop at the Michelin Winter Driving Academy at www.michelinwintercentre.com. www.newscanada. com
