DELTA – Farmers hurt by flooding have a few hurdles to clear before they’ll see a dime of emergency provincial aid. Fraser Valley farmers experienced massive crop losses in the fall due to torrential rainfall that began in early September. Longtime farmer Peter Guichon mused that it was likely the worst period of rain experienced locally in 80 years, rotting potatoes and other crops and bogging down equipment. In addition to crop insurance farmers take out, local growers were also hoping to use the provincial AgriStability Program. Farmers also wanted the province to initiate a joint federal/provincial AgriRecovery Program as well. However, until now all farmers had to rely on to pay bills and somehow get by is whatever crop insurance they had, said civic

councillor and Ladner farmer Ian Paton, also a director of the Delta Farmers’ Institute. “I’ve been through this myself and suppliers are usually pretty good about saying, ‘I know things have been tough, I know you owe us a bunch of money, but you have to get things wrapped up by Christmas,’” Paton said. He added farmers often face large expenses. “It may not be uncommon to have a fertilizer bill from a fertilizer company for $75,000 or $100,000 that has to be cleaned up by Christmas. “You may owe $50,000 to your fuel company for diesel, all these different things.” Paton said farmers are likely starting their new year with a pile of unpaid bills. “It’s going to be a tough go. Then guys have to have money to buy seed for the upcoming year,” he said. The federal/provincial recovery program will likely be even further

down the road, explained Paton, because farmers will be required to show all the payments they received from crop insurance, the provincial recovery program as well as prove their losses. Paton and members of the DFI recently met with Ben Stewart, appointed minister of agriculture in October, who visited in Delta. Based on that conversation, Paton said he wasn’t encouraged aid money for farmers will come sooner rather than later. The massive crop losses in Delta have also impacted programs undertaken by the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust. According to a recent newsletter by the trust, the rains saturated the soil and overwhelmed drainage systems, turning the farm fields of Delta into “a slurry of silt, clay and water.” By the end of October, over 1,800 acres of potatoes were left in the field, along with bean, silage corn, grain and cole crops, notes the trust.

Jordan Welch, an organizer with the Langley-Surrey chapter of Operation Red Nose, says the program broke a record for the number of rides given to local holiday merrymakers over the nine-day campaign that was capped off on New Year’s Eve. Welch said volunteer drivers brought 1,086 partiers safely home. “The demand was definitely up this year,” said Welch, who has been a volunteer driver with the program for seven years. “Everybody was wanting to be far more careful this year – not willing to take chances.” Welch attributes the higher demand for rides to B.C.’s strict anti-drinking driving laws that were introduced last year, which call for heavy fines and driving bans for blowing over the limit.

Taser used after stabbing

Partiers kept noses clean

Depositor beats thief

SURREY – A Newton man was Tasered by police outside of his house after another man who’d been visiting him was stabbed in the gut. Surrey RCMP Cpl. Drew Grainger said the stabbing victim, a 36-year-old Surrey man, suffered from a minor wound. He said investigators are still trying to figure out what brought on the assault. Grainger said the victim wandered out of the house and flagged down a motorist, who took him to hospital. It happened at about 7:50 a.m., in the 12800-block of 64th Avenue. Mounties surrounded the house and the suspect, a 56-year-old Surrey man, was Tasered, treated by paramedics and then taken to RCMP cells. Grainger said the suspect wouldn’t show his hands to police and had been fidgeting about his waist area. – Tom Zytaruk

SURREY – Surrey Mounties spent a typical New Year’s Eve on patrol, responding to 350 calls. The detachment receives roughly 250 to 280 calls on an average Friday night. Cpl. Drew Grainger said double the usual number of cops worked the New Year’s Eve shift. Though they were kept busy, he said, they encountered “nothing really out of the normal.” Grainger said the feedback he’s getting from police on the street is that, when it comes to drunk driving or driving while under the influence of narcotics, the officers “are seeing less than in previous years.” He attributes this to new legislation that grants patrolling cops more roadside power when dealing with drivers who are suspected of being intoxicated. – Tom Zytaruk

LANGLEY – A brave credit union customer chased down a bank robber and took back a bundle of stolen money in Langley. The thief walked in and demanded cash from a teller at Coast Capital Savings branch in the 6200 block of 200th Street Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. The teller, who had a customer making a deposit at her till, handed over a stack of bills, and the thief ran out the door. But the customer gave chase. He caught up to the suspect a short distance away, and there was a brief struggle from which the customer emerged the winner, and took the cash back to the credit union. Police, who arrived at the bank in response to the robbery, then used a tracking dog to find the suspect and arrested him about an hour after the theft. – Langley Advance

The 41st annual swim, hosted by the White Rock Lions, drew thousands of spectators who took in the splashy spectacle from the boardwalk. Swim organizer Don Miller said Monday there were 485 registered swimmers “a little bit better than the last couple of years,” and about 30 to 40 renegades who dove in informally. “It was a real good year,” Miller said. Miller said the glorious sunshine helped to bring out the visitors and estimates that between 2,500 to 3,000 people came out to watch the swimmers. “It was just all along the boardwalk, it was really great,” he said. Miller said the oldest registered swimmer was 71 and the youngest was four. Visitors came from as far away as South Africa, Switzerland and Australia. The event is a fundraiser for St. John Ambulance and the Semiahmoo Peninsula Marine Group. Organizers are still tallying up the donations. mbabic@thenownewspaper.com

Woman and son escape New Year’s Eve house fire SURREY – Surrey firefighters Tom ZYTARUK fought two house fires over the week- Staff Reporter end. The first was on New Year’s Eve, at about 7:30 p.m. It was a two-alarm fire, in the 14200-block of 84A Avenue. A woman and her son escaped unharmed but the rear of the house was badly damaged. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Surrey fire prevention chief Ron Cross said Monday. The second fire happened on Saturday at 4 p.m., in the 15500-block of 87A Avenue. A North Delta teacher gave birth to British Columbia’s first baby of 2011. Cayden Wilcott, was born one minute past midnight on New Year’s Day at B.C. Women’s Hospital and Health Centre. “We’re just super-excited parents,” said Jennifer Wilcott, holding her sixpound baby boy on New Year’s Day, alongside proud father Casey Wilcott. Jennifer Wilcott, a teacher at Hellings Elementary in Delta, went into labour at four p.m. Friday. “It’s awesome and we’re pretty tired. What can I say,” said Casey Wilcott, a Telus employee. The baby and his mother were both doing well as they met with the media on Saturday in their room at B.C. Women’s Hospital. “We’re definitely exhausted but I think that is going to be our lives from now on,” added Jennifer Wilcott about her first child. Their baby was due Jan. 10, so the Wilcotts had never considered the prospect of having the first British Columbian baby in the new year. “It wasn’t until I went into labour on New Year’s Eve. And then it entered my mind. I wasn’t expecting it or hoping for it. “It just sort of happened.” – Postmedia News

The threat of fines or losing their driver’s licence apparently prompted many partiers to call Operation Red Nose for the first time. “A couple of the ones that I gave rides to did mention that it was their first time using it because of the drinking-driving laws, they weren’t willing to take a chance,” Welch said. And as police forces throughout the region traditionally step up their antidrinking driving enforcement campaign over the holidays, no doubt many of Operation Red Nose’s clients were happy to be in the back seat instead of behind the wheel. “We did go through several road blocks,” he noted.

Operation Red Nose clients ranged from young to old, but drivers have been noticing that more young people are using the service. “We have seen a trend over the last couple of years where more younger people seem to be using it,” said Welch, who dropped by bars and clubs to help promote the campaign to the younger set. The rides are by donation. Although some clients end up fishing for change in their pockets once they reach their driveway, “most people are generous,” he said. They’re also grateful and generally very well behaved, too. Welch doesn’t have a final figure yet but the proceeds raised locally will support Langley Gymnastics, a program for Surrey and Langley kids. mbabic@thenownewspaper.com

Vander Zalm makes bad, bad move with book Former B.C. premier Bill Vander Zalm enjoyed a political resurrection this past year, with his successful cam- Keith paign against BALDREY the harmonized sales tax. He can be credited with helping to force Gordon Campbell from office, and there has been talk of re-starting his political career. Not so fast. He may have finally have bit off more than he can chew with his attack on former conflict commissioner Ted Hughes’ reputation. As a result, we may eventually witness a fascinating courtroom showdown between two of the most pivotal players on the political scene in the last two decades. At issue is Vander Zalm’s selfpublished autobiography, entitled For the People. Hughes is suing Vander Zalm for libel for his characterization, in the book, of Hughes’ investigation into whether the then-premier was in a conflict of interest over mixing government business with his ownership of the Fantasy Gardens theme park. Hughes, of course, concluded Vander Zalm was indeed in a conflict of interest and his damning report led Vander Zalm to resign the premiership in disgrace. But as his autobiography made clear, Vander Zalm has never really accepted Hughes’ findings. His book served as a score-settling vehicle on a number of fronts, not the least of which was getting back at Hughes (and, to be clear, at journalists such as myself). However, Hughes’ statement of claim filed in court zeroes in on almost a dozen references in Vander Zalm’s book that allegedly paint Hughes as being “self-interested, biased and politically partisan” in the course of his Fantasy Gardens inquiry (which Vander Zalm actually disputes ever

questioned or argued against. Former NDP premier Glen Clark tried to dump him, but Hughes refused to go, and Clark backed down in the face of public opinion siding with Hughes. Since then, Hughes has been given special assignments by several governments, including his damning review of how this province’s child protection policies are inadequate. Again, no one has ever questioned his judgment or conclusions. But now Vander Zalm has decided to take him on. Bad move. The former premier has demonstrated a penchant for revisionist history (his book reads as if he was simply a hapless victim of various conspiracies, and the only thing he ever did wrong was being too trusting.) Last fall, he went on CKNW radio and accused me of lying because I pointed out that, as premier, he had hired a numerologist who was a self-described racist, and a speechwriter who believed in an international banking conspiracy. Vander Zalm claimed he never even heard of either man, even though his association with them was well-documented at the time. Maybe he genuinely can’t remember the past. But Ted

Hughes may well force him to remember it, with painful accuracy. Mutual acquaintances tell me Hughes isn’t interested in settling out of court and is interested primarily in clearing the air and protecting his reputation. In his own court-filed response to Hughes’ statement of claim, Vander Zalm offers the novel defence that he never intended to make money off his autobiography. It will therefore be deeply ironic if, in fact, he actually loses a small fortune for losing a lawsuit over his life story. Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global News. As someone who was deeply immersed in the whole Fantasy Gardens issue, and who has known both Hughes and Vander Zalm for more than 20 years, I will boldly make a prediction here: Vander Zalm appears to be in deep, deep trouble. Ted Hughes is arguably the highest respected B.C. civil servant in recent history. His reputation as a fair, ethical and no-nonsense adjudicator is well-earned and cannot be questioned. A testament to his high regard was revealed in the immediate aftermath of the Bud Smith tapes scandal in the late 1980s. Smith was forced to step down as attorney general, and Hughes was his deputy minister at the time. Hughes held an extraordinary news conference and pronounced that he — not any politician — was now in charge of the criminal justice system. Rather than being questioned, the universal reaction to his statement was one of relief. At the time, Hughes was seen as a white knight, riding to the rescue of the integrity of the impartiality of the justice system, which had been bruised by the scandal. He soon became the province’s first conflict of interest commissioner, whose findings were never

Colley’s column crosses the line into blasphemy

The Editor, Re: “Get lost, Bill, and take that leaf blower with you,” the Now, Dec. 31. We strongly object to the vicious slant of the article by columnist Ted Colley. More people on this planet profess to be Christians than any other religion and Colley’s misuse of God’s name is plain wrong. What he considers to be humour, we consider to be blasphemy. Make a New Year’s resolution to remove Colley’s intolerant column from your paper.

Cash going to prisoners is misplaced sympathy The Editor, Re: “Victims of crime: we’re ‘snubbed again’ while convicts get Christmas goodie bags,” the Now, Dec. 21. Thank you for bringing attention to this sad situation. I completely agree with David Toner that the gifts should be going to victims’ families. In my opinion, compassionate individuals should clearly have the

right to help prisoners. I’m glad the Salvation Army is helping convicts and I don’t mind my donations to them being put toward that, but any court or government revenue going to prisoners instead of their victims is misplaced sympathy at best and injustice at worst.

The Editor, As a long-time resident in Tynehead, I’m often surprised by Surrey’s apparent lack of foresight when it comes to the planning of road improvements. I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen newly paved roads being dug up within months, and then left criss-crossed with patches. Current activity on 88th Avenue is another example. A notice of construction on 160th Street says to expect delays until Feb. 28, with intermittent stoppages between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. This coincides with the ongoing widening of 96th Avenue, Fraser Highway and Highway 1, so traffic will be simultaneously obstructed on every eastbound corridor leading out of Tynehead and Fleetwood. Why does the city not stagger these projects so that at least one eastbound route is left unobstructed? In the case of Fraser Highway, newly paved lanes remained closed for many months because old telephone poles were left standing in the middle of the lanes. The same thing is now happening on 96th Avenue. Is it not simple common sense that unused telephone poles should be removed before paving the added lanes?

Award Program Heritage Week 2011 February 21 – 27 THREE AND FOUR-YEAR-OLDS INVITED! Three and four-year-old children and their parents/caregivers are invited to visit a Surrey School District elementary school for the Ready, Set, Learn program.

The City of Surrey's Heritage Advisory Commission is inviting the public to nominate individuals or groups for the Annual Friends of Heritage Awards. Surrey City Council will present the awards at a Council meeting to be held in February 2011.

Ready, Set, Learn is a program designed to provide children and families with an opportunity to engage in a series of play-based learning activities within the school setting. Three and four-year-olds and their families are invited to attend one of the Ready, Set, Learn events held at schools throughout the district from January through early May.

The purpose of the Heritage Awards is to honour those individuals or groups in our community that have furthered the identification, preservation, and promotion of Surrey’s Heritage.

Parents/caregivers will receive helpful tips to support their child’s learning and development, as well as information about the early learning programs offered by the school district and the community resources available to families. It is a great way for you to get to know your future school and meet the principal, staff and students.

Toopy — that’s me!

On TV and elsewhere, Frank Meschkuleit is the voice of one very popular mouse “It’s quite a phenomenon, that little show. I’m delighted to have been a part of it.” His work doing the Toopy voice for the TV series ended two years ago, with reruns available to entertain young’uns for years to come. “We might do (new episodes for TV) down the road, because it’s so popular, but we did three seasons of it and the turnover of the two-to-six audience is pretty brisk, especially at the older end of it. That’s when they go, ‘Holy smokes, it’s Spider-Man!” In Vancouver last month, Meschkuleit spent a couple of days recording the mouse’s voice for Toopy and Binno and the Marshmallow Moon, which finds the friends on some kind of musical quest. Along the way, they encounter Blue Cat Blues Band, a Loud Mouth Crooner Fish, some Rock ‘n’ Roll Sheep, a pair of Love-struck Dragons and many other zany characters. “For that young audience, there aren’t many plot twists,” Meschkuleit said with a Toopy-ish laugh. When reached by the Now, Meschkuleit was driving home from Montreal after working on Life on the Block, another animated show from

Spectrum Entertainment. This one, however, is more of a PG-rated effort, with Meschkuleit playing an ultra-frugal divorced dad who inherits an apartment building full of zany tenants. Dabney, his main character, is a mix of Homer Simpson and Cliff Claven, of Cheers fame. Look for the show on TV next fall. Wherever life takes him, Meschkuleit will always be happy to be Toopy when called upon. “I worked on The Santa Clause 2 with Tim Allen years ago,” he said, “and kids on the set — visitors, strangers, anyone allowed to be there — would always ask him to do, ‘To infinity and beyond!’ and he’d do the Buzz Lightyear quote without missing a beat. So he never missed an opportunity to do a character he’d done in the past. I thought that was the right attitude, the way it should be done.”

When people learn Frank Tom ZILLICH Meschkuleit is the voice Staff reporter of Toopy, TV’s hyper and hugely popular mouse, it’s the parents who get most excited. “The parents always want to me to do the voice, so I do and they usually say something to their child like, ‘Oh, Jimmy, isn’t that wonderful?’ And the kid can’t really understand it at all — like, ‘Where’s your giant ears and little white buddy?’ It’s tough for them to grasp the whole concept of the voice-over thing.” Meschkuleit, a Torontonian, did three seasons of Toopy and Binoo for Treehouse TV, plus a staged production for the nation’s shopping malls and, now, the new Marshmallow Moon touring show that opens on a Surrey stage this Thursday evening (Jan. 6). For the uninitiated, Toopy is the ultra-talkative mouse, the larger pal of mute cat Binoo. Together, they’ve been a huge hit with preschool kids in recent years — to the tune of more than 500,000 DVDs sold in Canada alone. “I mean, Anne Murray doesn’t do those kind of numbers,” Meschkuleit told the Now.

our voices we are effectively showing our children that we are losing control. When our children have lost control, they need us to show them the way back. We use a time-out method, which allows us to take some time apart, regroup and come back to discuss the situation when tempers have cooled down. It gives us a chance to think about the outcome we want to achieve with a rational head and to communicate our thoughts better to our children. 4. Less boob-tube time, and more imagination time. Instead of parking the children in front of the television/Wii or computer, we make sure they are getting more time to create, be outside or simply playing with their toys. Too much technology has been robbing our children of using their brain to come up with their own fun. 5. Date night. This has been a goal we have maintained throughout our 14 years of marriage. Each month, we schedule a night just for the two of us. If we can’t get outside of the house for a dinner or a movie, we bring it to our home — one of us cooks an elaborate meal and rents a great movie and we have our evening when the kids go to bed. Here are five goals my husband and I have implemented in our lives that I believe every parent should make for the year ahead: 1. Catch our children doing something right and applaud them for it. Too often we see them doing something wrong, and reprimand them for it. When they do it right, we often take it for granted. Instead, we have made a point to show them that we recognize and appreciate it when they do something right, and give them kudos. 2. Make time for more time. We can give all the presents in the world to our children, but the greatest will always be our time. We set one-on-one time aside every day with our children, which includes hearing about their day over the dinner table, going for a walk or reading a book together. 3. Stop yelling. It’s a really easy thing to say but hard to carry out. When we raise

SURREY – Time flies when you’re having fun — just ask the Surrey firefighters. In 2001, the firefighters were looking to create an event that would help young people in the city and at the same time, raise the profile of the firefighters’ charity activities. The result of their efforts was a brand new senior girls hoops tournament — the Surrey Firefighters Goodwill Basketball Classic. Organized by a crew of firefighters and volunteers headed by tournament director Nancy Innes, the tourney tips off for the 10th time this week. While the novelty has worn off, the Goodwill tourney has evolved into one of the biggest high school sporting events of the year for girls in Surrey. “We had pretty big hopes for the tournament and we wanted it to be a true city tournament,” recalled Todd Schierling, a Surrey firefighter who helped get the tournament off the ground 10 years ago. “I remember it was us (Surrey firefighters), Big Kahuna Sports and the staff at Fleetwood Park Secondary who were kind of the three founders of the tournament. The tournament is kind of mirrored after what the RCMP does for the boys and we wanted to do something similar for the girls. Sharon Staples (Fleetwood Park phys-ed teacher) wanted a citywide tournament for the girls and we went with it.” From the beginning, the tournament was about more than basketball. Where most tournaments hand out trophies to the top players and teams, the silverware at the Goodwill Classic is secondary. Instead, the firefighters have used the event as a means of rewarding the best young people in the city who just happen to play basketball in their spare time.

Playing on a high school team helps, but the real qualifications required involve the teens’ efforts in the community and in the classroom. Over the past decade, the event has distributed more than $60,000 in bursaries to more than 120 Surrey students. “We got together and thought about what we could do to promote senior girls basketball as well as create goodwill and raise some money for bursaries,” Schierling said. “We wanted to reward the students who exhibit volunteerism in our community and decided to make that our theme. We’re pretty proud that we can support students who want to further their education and stay in school.” The success of the basketball tourney has in turn served as the format for a Surrey firefighters-sponsored wrestling tournament for high school kids in Surrey.

Despite its popularity among the senior girls hoopsters in the city, tournament organizers have tweaked the format over the years. Delta schools took part in several events in the early years and a travelling team from Australia lost to Elgin Park in one memorable final.

We’re pretty proud that we can support students who want to further their education and stay in school.” The biggest change to the event came three years ago when the pool of teams was divided into two groups depending on strength and experience. The top teams now compete in the Axe Division while less experienced sides battle for the Ladder Division title.

“We went to two separate divisions because we wanted it to be competitive for everybody,” Schierling said. “We realized that, particularly with Elgin Park but other teams too, that they were much stronger than some of the other teams. It really didn’t make much sense to have them play teams they were going to beat by a lopsided score; it wouldn’t be much fun for anyone. So we created two divisions, the Axe for the stronger teams and the Ladder for the rest. It’s worked out really well because we get two really competitive finals each year and all of the teams have something to play for.” The surest sign that the tournament is underway is the aroma of grilling smokies wafting through the host school. Captains Bob McAuley and Tim Baillie cook up a storm on the big barbecue every year, raising between $500 and $1,000 for the tournament. However, none of these golfers will play in the opener in Maui this week, as it is just for winners. But many who have qualified to be there are not. Phil Mickelson never golfs this early in the season; however, others like Louis Oosthuizen, Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer and Rory McIlroy will not be there. The reason: these players have decided not to join the PGA Tour and the rules limit the number of official starts they can have on the tour. That being the case, they want to hang to them until later in the season when they may need them for ranking. These guys are all independent contractors and the PGA should get out of their way and let them play. Graeme McDowell — a major winner — is showing up, as he has decided to join the tour and can have any number of starts he wants. It shouldn’t matter: when you’re among the elite you should be able to play on any tour in the world. Hard to believe the season has started already. Canadians to put on your list when checking daily scores are Chris Baryla of Vernon, Stephen Ames and Mike Weir, of course, and Matt McQuillan of Ontario, Graham DeLaet, who had a great first year, and David Hearn, who is coming out of the Nationwide Tour. Unless injured, one thing we can be sure of is that all six will be in Vancouver at Shaughnessy for the RBC Canadian Open. July 18-24 are the dates and it’s great to have it back in our area. I don’t know about you, but I still miss the Air Canada Open and even though the Canadian Open and the Air Canada never brought in the Woods or the Micklesons of the world, we always got to see some great golf.
