SURREY – Staff and students at Adams Road Elementary are celebrating the New Year in a special way – the opening of their new school. The Cloverdale-area school named after Gertrude Adams, a Surrey newspaper reporter in the 1930s, opened on Monday. “It’s wonderful, everyone’s here and happy,” said principal Joanne Berka.
SURREY – A candlelight vigil was held Sunday night after the death Saturday of one of a pair of twin girls injured in a Surrey apartment fire on Jan. 4. The vigil was aimed at supporting the family of Ava Elizabeth Keddie, who died in B.C. Children’s Hospital in Vancouver early Saturday morning. The B.C. Coroner’s Service had advised police that Ava Keddie succumbed to her injuries shortly after midnight, Surrey RCMP Cpl. Drew Grainger said in a news release. Her twin sister Samantha was in critical but stable condition, RCMP said Saturday. On Thursday, Grainger had said the condition of the two girls had been upgraded to “serious but stable.” Both girls suffered burns to 30 per cent of their bodies. The two 20-montholds were rescued by their neighbours, brothers Simon and Matt Gallant, who live across the hall in the apartment building in the 9500block of 127th Avenue in the Cedar Hills neighbourhood. It is believed the fire broke out when a lamp fell on the bed, igniting the blankets in the bedroom where the girls were, said Surrey Deputy Fire Chief Jon Caviglia. – Postmedia News

“We got right to work.” Adams Road Elementary began operating as a school in September 2010 in portable classrooms on the grounds of Don Christian Elementary and one wing of the school. The two schools shared the gym and library. The new school, a twostorey building with green features, is a wireless campus with the latest technology that includes computers in every classroom and smart-boards. The school site features an all-weather playing field and play area, and the lucky students will also get to use the grass soccer field and baseball diamond at the adjacent park. The school has 262 students from kindergarten to Grade 7. For now, Adams Road Elementary has a couple of classrooms to spare, but as it’s located in rapidly growing east Cloverdale, an area that is attracting young families, those classrooms likely won’t be empty for long. The school was slated to host tours Monday night to celebrate the opening. mbabic@thenow newspaper.com

Couple found dead in hotel

RICHMOND – A Richmond man and woman were found dead in a local hotel room on Saturday night. The pair, both in their 50s, suffered some form of trauma, according to police; however, Richmond RCMP have said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the murders. Police are remaining tight-lipped about the identity of the couple and the location; however, media reports said staff at the Hampton Inn on Bridgeport Road confirmed that the bodies were found there. Next of kin have been notified but the names of the dead are being withheld at the request of the families. Their relationship has not been released. – Richmond News
LANGLEY – Firefighter Ron Dunkley has died two months after being struck by a train while on a trip to Washington State. The Langley City firefighter died on Tuesday evening just before 6 p.m., said deputy fire chief Pete Methot. Dunkley was surrounded by family and friends at the time. Dunkley was on a brief vacation to Seattle when he was walking near some train tracks on Nov. 6. He was hit and dragged by a train, and had been in a hospital ever since. “We’re going to miss this guy terribly,” Methot said. “He was sure a lot of fun to be around.” – Langley Advance
NEW WESTMINSTER – After 13 years in the Royal City, the last 10-and-a-half as the city’s top cop, Chief Const. Lorne Zapotichny has announced he’ll be retiring, effective Feb. 28. Zapotichny joined the New Westminster Police Service in February 1998 and was sworn in as Chief Constable in August 2000. Prior to coming to the Royal City, Zapotichny served for 30 years with the RCMP, including being officer-incharge of the 160-member Coquitlam/Port Coquitlam detachment. The New Westminster police board will announce a succession plan in the next month. – Royal City Record

‘Extreme measures’ not enough to escape capture LANGLEY – The shed was in a Marisa BABIC Staff Reporter rustic setting but the grow-op was a sophisticated set up. Surrey RCMP busted a marijuana grow operation in an outbuilding on rural property in the 23400-block of 16th Avenue in Langley Thursday. Police seized about 600 plants along with two shotguns and one rifle. Surrey RCMP Cpl. Drew Grainger said the drug squad also discovered a surprising level of sophistication used in the grow-op. “Extreme measures were taken to prevent the detection of this operation,” Grainger said Monday. A large natural gas-fed generator valued at between $80,000 and $100,000 and was allegedly fueled with stolen gas was used to run the operation. “It was fed by natural gas, which is something that’s unseen typically in marijuana grow operations, and the natural gas was bypassed... the operation was stealing natural gas to power the generator.” To absorb the noise of the generator and the pungent scent of marijuana, the suspects had installed several commercial-sized air conditioning units and specialized insulating and venting equipment. Police estimate the suspects invested about $300,000 into the operation. Four adult men have been arrested, ranging in age from mid-30s to 40s. Police are recommending charges of production of a controlled substance, possession for the purpose of trafficking along with weapons charges and others relating to the theft of natural gas. Weather delays library project SURREY – Wet and cold weather has delayed construction of the city’s flagship library in Whalley. Construction on the $30-million library designed by internationally renown architect Bing Thom started in the first week of March 2010. But despite the best efforts by the project team to meet the original March 31, 2011 deadline for “substantial completion of the project, the project schedule has slipped slightly,” says a city staff report. Funding for the project is split between the three levels of government with the $10-million grant from the feds, part of the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, subject to the project completion date of March 31, 2011. As a result, the city will be applying for a one-time extension of the deadline. The federal government has announced a one-time extension from March 31, 2011 to Oct. 31, 2011 to the construction deadline for projects under the economic stimulus program. – The Now

Historic items have new digs DELTA – Edgar Sandor GYARMATI Dunning wasn’t Now Contributor there in person but he was certainly there in spirit as a large crowd gathered Friday to celebrate the grand opening of the Delta Archives and Edgar Dunning Reading Room. Located on the ground floor of the former courthouse next to municipal hall in Ladner, the new facility provides state-of-the-art storage of Delta’s historic documents and photos. The climate-controlled environment will house municipal materials as well as those belonging to the Delta Museum and Archives Society. The facility was named in part to honour Dunning, one of the founding members of the museum society and its first president. The former Delta Optimist editor and publisher, regarded as Delta’s most trusted storyteller, passed away last fall so didn’t get the chance to see the opening of the facility that bears his name.
Family members as well as many dignitaries and civic and provincial officials were on hand for the grand opening on what would have been Dunning’s 101st birthday. Several council members, including Mayor Lois Jackson, got into the spirit by wearing costumes from yesteryear. Parks and recreation director Ken Kuntz, who doubled as master of ceremonies in a fancy suit with top hat, said a modern archives facility had long been talked about. The public archives was made a reality thanks to joint federal and provincial funding for “shovel ready” projects last year. The $675,000 project saw $450,000 come from the Provincial/Federal Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, while the remaining $225,000 was paid by Delta. B.C. Sport and Cultural Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux told the audience the project would serve the community for many years to come.
Jackson said the stimulus funding enabled Delta to build a “first-class facility that will house key documents vital to the preservation of Delta’s long, rich history.” Delta Museum and Archives Society president Claudette Hayward said the archives is a “tremendous collaboration” between Delta and her society. Hayward, who knew Dunning for 45 years, then presented an old book, recently donated by longtime resident Tony Wideski, which has the minutes of the very first meeting of Delta council held on Jan. 12, 1880, as well as meetings through to March 1887. Jackson read a few hand-written paragraphs on what transpired at that first meeting so long ago. Wideski told the Optimist he had the book in storage for over 40 years, having received it from someone who worked for the Optimist long ago. “It’s a long story,” he quipped when asked about the history of the book.

Saip said he supports Falcon’s position on the issues, including the candidate’s proposal to offer financial incentives for teachers recognized for their excellence in the classroom. “We’re working really hard in our district of finding new ways of doing things and being innovative and I like the idea that some-
one is willing to step outside the traditional restraints of education and challenge it,” said Saip. Falcon recently made a splash on his campaign trail by suggesting public school teachers be paid according to their teaching skills and not length of service. The Liberal leadership hopeful said he would push for a meritbased pay system if he becomes premier after his party’s Feb. 26 leadership vote. We have to continue to embrace new ideas and look forward rather than just doing things the way they have been done because that’s always been done that way.” Susan Lambert, president of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, said recently she was appalled by the Surrey-Cloverdale Liberal MLA’s proposal, noting the Liberal government has under-
mined the education system with inadequate funding for the past decade. First elected in 2001, Falcon was a former health minister and previously the transportation minister in Premier Gordon Campbell’s Liberal government. He was often the target for opponents of the Gateway Program projects, including the South Fraser Perimeter Road. When he was appointed minister of health two years ago, he wasn’t on the hot seat as Delta Hospital was a far less controver-
sial subject compared to earlier in the decade. He was on hand last January for the grand opening of the Delta Hospice Society’s 10-suite hospice residence and centre for supportive care. Saip said he believes Falcon has the ability to keep a coalition together and govern the province effectively. A member of the B.C. Liberals, Saip ran for the party’s nomination in the 1999 Delta South byelection, but was disqualified on a technicality.

Abbott’s tax policy would be bad for B.C. The candidates for the leadership of the B.C. Liberal party have offered a smorgasbord of policies, although Keith none of them BALDREY qualifies as a new “big” idea. But one of the promises put forth by one of the candidates has the potential of causing serious problems if it’s ever repeated. I’m referring to George Abbott’s promise to use the upcoming HST referendum to also determine the fate of the carbon tax. Setting tax policy via a referendum is a bad, bad idea. If you don’t believe me, check out what’s going on in places like California or Arizona. They are just two of many states that have used referendums to greatly hamper (or even eliminate) the abilities of state governments to raise taxes to meet rising demands for services. As a result, states are finding themselves slashing services in such areas as K-12 education, post-secondary education, municipal services and public sector wages. States are teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, and many have simply refused to pay creditors (i.e. individuals and companies contracted to do work on behalf of government). The financial mess south of the border has much to do with the recent recession, of course, but its roots extend back to the notorious Proposition 13 passed by California voters in the 1970s. That referendum enshrined in state law a requirement that any new tax had to have the support of two-thirds of the electorate in a referendum. In other words, it made it impossible for a state government to raise taxes because the bar was set too high. Other states have since passed

demand more and more things from government. One of Abbott’s leadership rivals, Christy Clark, has rightly called him on this idea. To his credit, Abbott appears to have the most extensive and thoughtful platform of any of the candidates. But if he ultimately wins the leadership, I hope he confines the tax-by-referendum idea to a onetime-only occurrence. ••• A lot of observers were quick to write off NDP MLA Harry Lali as a serious leadership candidate, but I think he has the potential to have a significant impact on the race and on the party’s future as well. While I don’t think he stands a good chance of actually winning the contest, Lali has signaled he’s prepared to play rough and engage in some serious hand-to-hand combat with people. As a veteran MLA and former cabinet minister, Lali cannot simply be ignored by the party’s hierarchy. In fact, Lali says he wants to take down what he considers to be the “establishment” of the party. Presumably, he’s referring to people like party president Moe Sihota, provincial secretary Jan O’Brien, B.C. Federation of Labour president Jim Sinclair, and those
in the NDP caucus who have been calling the shots for years. Again, I don’t think he’s going to necessarily be successful in his quest, but if he pushes the theme hard enough things could get very, very ugly indeed within the NDP. Rather than a so-called healing process, the leadership race may end up being an all-out war pitting faction against faction. And perhaps that’s just what the party needs. A lot of former allies in the party are now bitter enemies, and until they deal with their internal demons, they stand little chance of forming government. similar laws and the result is the financial meltdown we are seeing today. The people most hurt by this tax revolt are, naturally, the most vulnerable: the poor, the disabled and the young. Tax revolts are tinged with populism, of course, but they are the philosophical offspring of rightwing conservativism. Tax measures should be set by a government duly elected by the people. Of course, Abbott is not proposing anything like Proposition 13. But B.C. voters will now have two kicks at the anti-tax can, and that may set a precedent that may prove seductive to future politicians and governments. As demands for health care, education, higher wages and infrastructure continue to climb, more and more revenues have to be found – either through taxes or user-pay models, or spending cuts elsewhere. Many people simply can’t connect the dots when it comes to taxes and services. When there’s risks, parents need to be armed with information The Editor, Re: “Coptic churches on alert,” the Now, Jan. 7. As the mother of a child who attends the school downstairs at St. Mary’s Coptic church, I wish this information had come out a little sooner, so that as parents, we could have made informed decisions about our child’s attendance on Friday. I first heard about the situation while reading news online on Wednesday. I was concerned and spoke with the school, which had heard

nothing at all of the scare or precautions being taken. I emailed them the article I’d read. I also called the local RCMP non-emergency number for some information. The person I spoke with did not have any.
She put me on hold and came back to say there is an “awareness” of a threat but no details and that was that. I had explained that my child goes to school at the church, and that the school (which is not associated with the church) did not know anything about the situation and I was simply told that as a parent, I would need to make my own decision about sending my child to school on Friday. The school, having no other information either, advised they
would “remain alert” and that was that. Thankfully, nothing happened, and the immediate “awareness” can be put to rest. I don’t believe in living in fear, or fear mongering, but I do believe that if there is enough of a threat for police participation, either with warnings or an actual presence, that all the information available, which does not put further risk to the situation, should be given to those who might be in the vicinity. I am surprised that given the
need for “static security” that Saint Mary Coptic Church deacon Tony Sourial did not give the school the information so it could advise parents. I would like to think that if there was enough concern for a police presence, then the school would have been made aware so that parents of the students would be given enough information to make an informed decision about whether to send their children to school on that day.

The Editor, Re: “Get lost Bill, and take that leaf blower with you,” the Now, Dec. 31. Ted Colley’s column was a truly hilarious piece of good writing, which obviously was completely lost on letter writers Aren and Mary van Dyke, who chose to see it as “a vicious slant” of sorts. There was absolutely nil in that article to get even remotely upset about. In fact I thought Colley’s use of words was pretty elegant when referring to “recycled politicians” and Vander Zalm was not even worth recycling – as we all know! What is sad is this: people who become so outrageously fanatic about their religious beliefs that they cannot see the forest for the trees anymore and any kind of humour becomes blasphemy of some sort. It is called religious nitpicking. To me and hopefully many others who enjoy Colley’s sense of humour, it would be a sin to stop a worthy column like his because of some truly intolerant people who have lost all sense of humour. I suggest the Now’s New Year’s resolution should be to have more intelligent columnists like Ted Colley produce some much-needed smiles and grins in this rather miserable world. To the van Dykes, I suggest a New Year’s resolution for themselves. Perhaps something like “we shall no longer be intolerant, tunnel-visioned and inappropriately critical of others who are not fanatical Christians.”

With knives, cut to the high-carbon kind OnCooking
I have always said one of my favourite things about being a chef is that I get to play with knives. Although this may sound Chef very adventurDEZ ous in a James Bond fashion, knife skills and proper/safe cutting practices are a very serious subject in the kitchen. With some basic knowledge, you can start to overcome any cutting intimidation you may have. In this column I will focus on the tools themselves — knives. This is the first of three installments on cutting. My next column will focus on cutting boards, and the third will focus on cutting techniques. There are many choices when trying to decide on which knives to adorn the collection of cutting tools in your kitchen. The marketplace is saturated with everything from mail-order deals to high-end specialties. First and foremost, I have to stress that one usually gets what they pay for. Before you reach for your credit card when you see the full collection of ginsu knives for only $19.99 on TV, think about it realistically. How well are these knives manufactured? Once the

Remember, from this amount, a profit must be made as well. If you are looking to start a good-quality knife collection, you should purchase knives made from high-carbon stainless steel. The
high-carbon content in stainless steel is what ensures it is strong. This is very important for keeping a sharp edge. Any knife can be made from stainless steel, but unless it is has a high-carbon content as well, it will lose its sharpness very quickly in comparison. Start with a standard chef’s knife. Other than for bread cutting, this is the most versatile knife to have in the kitchen, and can be used for almost any application. It
offers a rounded top edge on the blade to facilitate a rocking motion to ease most cutting/slicing preparations. The next knife one should purchase is a quality serrated knife for bread cutting. The serrated edge will not only produce perfect slices of bread without squashing the loaf, it also helps in producing extremely thin cuts of fruits and vegetables. A paring knife should also be purchased, because a chef’s knife might be overkill for those small jobs. These are the three main knives that should grace the starting foundation of your knife collection. From this point on, you can proceed to adding other knives such as a carving knife, filet knife, cleaver, vegetable knife, etc. Most good-quality knives will offer a full tang, meaning the steel blade will run through the full length of the handle as well. This will offer more balance and control. Most importantly, ask questions and ask to handle the knives to ensure they offer a comfortable companionship with your unique hand. If a retail store is not informative about their products, and will not allow you to handle them, then take your business to one that will.
Dear Chef Dez, I am already assuming that you will not recommend buying those full sets of knives for a really low price from TV, but they must be good if they offer a lifetime guarantee that they will never need sharpening. How can they do this? Is there a catch? — Doris B., Burnaby Dear Doris, I am assuming the knives you are referring to are the same that I have seen. Although they are stainless steel, they offer a very low carbon content, which makes them very soft steel in comparison, and thus less expensive to manufacture. Since all of the edges on these knives are serrated, they will keep their sharpness for a longer period of time than a straight-edged knife, because the cutting is achieved by tearing at the food rather than slicing through it. They can offer a “lifetime guarantee” because they play on normal human behaviour. In Thursday’s semifinal round, Holy Cross punched their ticket to the championship game with an 83-27 win over Fleetwood Park as Jeanneine Yngreso collected 15 points. In the other semifinal, Lord Tweedsmuir knocked off defending champion Elgin Park 56-49 to nail down the second finals berth. When the Panthers and Crusaders hooked up in the title game for the Axe Division Saturday at Lord Tweedsmuir, Holy Cross used hard work to overcome the Cats’ noticeable height advantage. “Most teams who play us this year are going to have a size advantage over us so we have to compensate in
other ways,” Beauchamp said. “We have to play up-tempo and work hard to have success. We may not be the prettiest team to watch but we work hard and the girls bring a lot of passion to every game.” Yngreso led the Crusaders with 16 points in the title game, one more than teammate and tournament MVP Tessa Beauchamp. Holy Cross guard Jessica Viiladiego was named the tourney’s top defensive player while Lord Tweedsmuir’s Cara Bagry was honoured as the most inspirational. The Interior Division-leading Vees rallied to beat the Eagles 4-3 in the Okanagan city Friday night before using special teams to dump the Birds 5-1 at South Surrey Arena the following evening. “The shots were pretty even both nights but they found a way to make the most of their chances,” said Eagles coach Matt Erhart. “Penticton is a very good team and of all the teams in the league, if you turn the puck over or give them a little bit of space, they’ll take advantage of it. On the power play
they’re running two NHL draft picks (forwards Mark MacMillan and Brendan O’Donnell) off the one side and if you give them space or make the wrong read, it’s in the back of the net.” Friday in Penticton the Eagles led 3-2 after two periods before the Vees rallies with two unanswered goals in the final frame to pull out the win. Tyler Morley bagged one unassisted goal and set up another to lead the Eagles. Riley Sweeney and Jeff Vanderlugt also scored for Surrey. The two teams hooked up for a rematch in Surrey the next night and this time around the Vees put the game out of reach by the end of the second period. After killing off a five-minute Eagles power play early in the middle frame, Penticton then connected for three straight power-play goals of
their own to take a 3-1 lead. The Vees added two more goals in the third period to salt the game away. “It was just one of those games where the final score wasn’t really indicative of the game,” Erhart said. “We played really well early and had the lead but the difference was really in the second period where we got a five-minute power play and they got the momentum. Our big guns didn’t step up and they’re top guys did. They got the momentum from that penalty kill and the next thing we knew, we’re down 3-1.” Michael Stenerson scored the lone goal for Surrey on a second period power play. The Eagles hit the road this weekend for games in Powell River (Friday), Nanaimo (Saturday) and Cowichan Valley (Sunday).

Catholics Basketball Championships get underway at the Fleetwood school this week. “The tournament started here and Bob DeJulius, Bert LeChasseur and Frank Roberto were the initial driving forces to make it happen,” said Holy Cross athletic director Gianni Bittanti. “It’s held here every year and it’s always incredibly exciting for the school. You can feel the energy in the school and there’s always big crowds for our games. We have graduates come back to just sit in the stands and feel part of it. It’s a big week for our school.” Fresh off a win in the Surrey Firefighters Goodwill tourney, the Crusaders will be favoured in the senior girls tourney. On the boys’ side of the draw, St. Thomas More is the favourite but the Knights can expect to be challenged by Archbishop Carney, Holy Cross and Notre Dame. The tournament begins on Wednesday (Jan. 12) although Holy Cross does not begin play until play Thursday with the girls playing at 10:30 a.m. and the boys tipping off at noon. The championship finals are set for Saturday evening at 6 p.m. (girls final) and 7:30 p.m. (boys final).

How many people stand between you and your dream job? There are approximately five people standing between creative professionals and the job they want, a survey suggests. Six degrees of separation isn’t just a game to find connections to the actor Kevin Bacon; advertising and marketing executives say they meet with an average of six applicants before filling an open position in their departments, according to a survey by The Creative Group, a
staffing firm that specializes in creative, advertising, marketing and web professionals. Approximately 250 marketing and advertising executives were polled for the study. While the field is expected to increase its hiring in the next three months, it doesn’t mean companies will relax their standards, says Lara Dodo, a vicepresident with The Creative Group’s Canadian operations.
“Given the high calibre of talent currently available, employers are being prudent in their hiring and are weighing their options before extending an offer.” Creative Group offers some tips for job-seekers hoping to stand out among the crowd: * Do your due diligence - Know more than you have to about the job and company in order to define what specifically you can offer.
