SURREY – A Surrey company is flying high over a high-tech breakthrough inspired by a shimmering blue butterfly. The idea, developed at Simon Fraser University’s campuses at Surrey and Burnaby, involves some really small stuff. Really small. We’re talking nanotechnology, 1,500 times thinner than a strand of human hair. Holes so small, air can’t pass through them. So small, they can trap a single wavelength of light. Inspired by the Blue Morpho Butterfly’s wings, the technology

is being used to develop unique anti-counterfeiting security features that can be applied to bank notes, legal documents, retail merchandise and other items like concert tickets, stock certificates, visas, passports and pharmaceuticals. Clint Landrock, of North

Vancouver, is an SFU applied sciences grad. He began researching nanoholes under the guidance of engineering science professor Bozena Kaminska, a Vancouver resident. They approached Doug Blakeway, CEO of Nanotech Security Corp. and SFU Venture Connection’s entrepreneur in residence, with their groundbreaking idea and the Surrey resident was “astounded” by its potential. “I love nanotechnology but I really have not seen a commercialization of it that can make you money in the near term,” Blakeway said. see NANOTECHNOLOGY, page 7 

SURREY – Surrey fire inspectors are trying to figure out what caused a blaze that destroyed a fifth wheel trailer at Peach Arch RV Park in South Surrey on Saturday afternoon. Nobody was injured in the fire, which happened at about 3 p.m. The 27-acre campground and recreational vehicle park is located at 14601 40th Avenue. Surrey’s chief fire prevention officer Ron Cross said inspectors were on site Monday, sifting through the wreckage for clues as to what caused the fire. He said they should know by today.

SURREY – A restaurant on Fraser Highway will be home to the first Freedom Biker Church location in Canada. Come Feb. 6, Sunday mornings at Davidson’s Pitt Stop in Fleetwood will be a gathering place for bikers who embrace the Bible. Chuck Pearce serves as pastor and co-founder of the Surrey church, an affiliate of the Freedom Biker Church established in 2006 in Angier, North Carolina. Pearce and the ninemember church leadership team here – including one man who spent some 40 years behind bars – are eager to reach out to bikers who want the guidance of God’s word, in a setting that looks nothing like a church.

Surrey twin recovering after tragic fire SURREY – Little Samantha Keddie remains in serious condition in hospital but is improving, Surrey RCMP say. “She still has a long road ahead of her,” Cpl. Drew Grainger said. The 20-month-old girl and her twin sister, Ava, suffered severe burns after a lamp caught bedding on fire near their crib. Ava died in B.C. Children’s Hospital in Vancouver four days after the Jan. 4 fire at Mainstreet apartments in Cedar Hills, where the girls shared a third-floor suite with their mom and three-year-old brother.

We are the foot soldiers taking it to the street.” The group secured Davidson’s for church meetings after striking out at a number of warehouse sites in Surrey and Langley. “Nobody wanted us,” Pearce said of the futile search for church space. “We made a number of offers but we had so many turn-downs, we couldn’t find a building where a landlord would rent space to a biker church.” Six years ago, Pearce was jailed in Quesnel on an outstanding warrant. “I sat there and looked up and basically said, ‘You know, God, if you’re there, I gotta change my life, it ain’t working the way I’m doing it.’ “I asked Him, ‘You get me out of this and I’ll do something for you – I’ll get my life cleaned up and I’ll do a ministry.’” The following day, he was released from jail. Months later, with the help of a good lawyer, Pearce

SURREY – An elderly woman is in critical condition after a car hit her in Whalley Sunday evening. The 79-year-old pedestrian had been crossing Whalley Blvd. at 102nd Avenue with a friend at about 6:30 p.m. when a Chevrolet Aveo hit her. Surrey RCMP Insp. Dave Attfield said it wasn’t clear if the woman and man were crossing with the signal. The road was wet, visibility was poor and both were wearing dark clothing. He wasn’t injured. Attfield said drugs or alcohol weren’t a factor. Police ask witnesses to call 604-599-0502.

SURREY – Mounties are still investigating last month’s brutal assault of a Surrey postal worker but have not made an arrest. They hope witnesses will come forward to help them identify a suspect who attacked the Whalley mailman. The 44-yearold Canada Post carrier was delivering mail outside an apartment building at 132nd Street and 105th Avenue on December 15 when he was jumped. The attacker or attackers took some mail from his bag but didn’t take his bag or keys. Police ask witnesses to the attack, which happened in broad daylight on a busy street, to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.

For a time, the 20-year Surreyite ran a company called Storm Riders, an acronym for Servant Trusting Our Risen Master. As a one-man show, he’d pull into motorcycle trade shows and other events with cross-adorned clothing and other merchandise, spreading God’s message. “I was alone in that booth but always surrounded by people, because so many people wanted to hear what it was all about,” Pearce said. “Everybody had a story to tell, and I realized that there are a lot of bikers

out there looking for a place to belong – a lot of hurting bikers, struggling with addictions, marital breakup, you name it. I befriended these people and developed a real network of friends. That’s when I realized I could make a difference.” Pearce and the Freedom Biker Church crew have a booth at the Vancouver Motorcycle Show in Abbotsford this weekend (see story at right), and they’re also invited to the inaugural Sturgis North biker rally and music festival in Salmon Arm this coming July. see BIKER CHURCH page 4 

SURREY – The next leader of the provincial NDP party won’t be an MLA from Surrey-Whalley. Bruce Ralston, who served as the party’s president from 1996 to 2001, has decided not to join the race for his party’s leadership. Instead, he’s endorsing NDP health critic Adrian Dix, MLA for Vancouver-Kingsway. Ralston said he believes Dix has the experience, intelligence and energy to make a good leader. The NDP will hold its leadership convention on April 17. Those in the running for leader are latecomer Dix, fellow MLAs Mike Farnworth, Harry Lali, Nicholas Simons, John Horgan, and marijuana activist Dana Larsen.

Burglars take credit cards in North Delta DELTA – Cops are looking for four thieves who burglarized a house in North Delta, stole the victim’s keys and credit cards and then went on a spending spree in Surrey on Sunday. Last May, after doing some research, Pearce and others with the local group flew to North Carolina to meet with founders of Freedom Biker Church, which counts seven chapters in the U.S. The group is online at www.freedombikerchurch.com. “The biker churches down south, it’s kind of like walking into a biker bar run by Jesus,” Pearce said. “Typically, it’s a band playing rock music but with different lyrics. The churches are always in warehouses, definitely not a church building, and it ain’t nothin’ like your mama’s church. It’s a church for bikers. They’re the real deal.” The trick is to earn acceptance and trust in the biker world – no easy task, Pearce admits, but doors are already opening for the Surrey church group. “Bikers will stick their finger in your chest and say, ‘You know what, just be real, don’t try to be something you’re not.’ These guys, they’d die for each other and in the biking world, there are certain habits and things done a certain way, and some of these guys absolutely endorse what we’re doing – not all of them, but we do have some great support for what we’re doing, that acceptance. They know that what we’re doing is working for a lot of people. We are genuine.” There is no back-of-the-jacket patch for this church, just a simple logo. “We are definitely not a club, we are a

church that welcomes all patches,” Pearce said. “We have to be sensitive to all that, because in the biker community, when you wear a patch it has huge significance, just like membership does. SURREY – Education Minister Margaret MacDiarmid dropped by recently to visit some schools. Surrey school officials took the opportunity to bend her ear about the lack of funding for education. Accompanied by school board chair Laurae McNally, MacDiarmid toured Dogwood Elementary and Frank Hurt Secondary schools last Monday in the city’s north end and later met with a group of leadership students and teachers. After the tour, trustees and senior staff sat down with the minister to talk about key education issues, specifically a critical lack of capital funding to build new schools in the rapidly growing school district, the largest in the province. McNally says MacDiarmid got the message. “I’ve been encouraged all along that

this minister understands our situation,” McNally said. “The minister and ministry staff clearly knows that we need a capital infusion desperately.” MacDiarmid promised officials at the meeting that her ministry plans to fight for an “ambitious” capital plan in the next provincial budget, although she conceded that funding decisions are ultimately made “higher up” at the treasury board. McNally also noted that MacDiarmid is currently a “caretaker” minister. She was re-appointed education minister after George Abbott resigned to run in the Liberal leadership race and now splits her duties between two ministries. “So we have to keep the pressure up,” McNally said. – Marisa Babic

is inspired by the way the butterfly – a large species indigenous to Central America, with a wingspan up to eight inches – gets its iridescent blue wings through nanostructures that reflect and refract light. Its wings absorb light and give off colour.

SURREY – Cleo Faus Jessica “Kip” Gaudry was senKERR Now Contributor tenced in Surrey Provincial Court Thursday afternoon to 18 months in jail for possession of child pornography. Judge Peder Gulbransen said he had to consider the former Delta bureaucrat’s prior record and the level of depravity of the images found in crafting what he called a “significant” sentence. Crown prosecutor James Lees told the court investigators found more than 10,000 still images and 364 videos on computers taken from Gaudry’s office and home in North Delta. Gulbransen described more than half of the photos and videos as “particularly disturbing” and involving very young children. Gaudry has a history of sexual offences involving minors. In 1995, he pleaded guilty to nine charges of sexual assault involving teenaged girls while district administrator for the community of Houston in west-central B.C. The assaults took place between 1986 and 1994. He was sentenced to threeand-a-half years in prison by a Prince George judge. Gaudry said he started accessing child pornography on the Internet just 18 months after serving his sentence. Gaudry was charged with possession of child pornography and accessing child

pornography after Delta police raided both his home and office at municipal hall in March 2009. Seven computers, two Blackberries, external hard drives and other storage devices were seized from his home. In his office at municipal hall, police also found two laptops, a desktop computer, flash drives, a camera and a cell phone. He pleaded guilty to the possession charge in November. The Crown stayed the second charge. Gaudry, 59, dressed in blue jeans and a leather jacket, appeared sombre throughout the proceedings and declined to address the court when given the chance. His lawyer told the court while some of the images were found on computers in his office at the time of the police raid, those computers were moved between his home and office and he never viewed or downloaded any photos or video while at work. Delta police were tipped off by an international child pornography investigation based in Belgium. Officers were forwarded a Delta IP address, which led them to Gaudry’s home. Gaudry’s jail term will be followed by three years probation during which he cannot consume alcohol or drugs, have contact with anyone under 18, or possess a computer or a cell phone with Internet access, among other conditions.

Residents irked, but trees axed for reason DELTA – Several trees were recently removed from land around Boundary Bay Airport in order to ensure the safety of both birds and planes. The Optimist, a sister paper to the Now, received several calls last week from people upset the airport had removed the trees, which had seen some eagle activity in the last year. Airport manager Mike Prosser said the airport has a wildlife management plan designed to improve aviation safety by reducing hazards to aircraft caused by wildlife. That includes the removal of trees. In this case, the trees were adjacent to the approach for one of the airport’s runways. Over the last year, large birds,

including eagles, were seen perching in the area. The trees’ proximity to the runway put both birds and planes at risk. Bev Day, executive director of the nearby Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (OWL), agreed the trees needed to come down. She said she observed a pair of eagles leaving the tree and flying directly over the runway. She said the tree removal would not be detrimental to the birds since they had not nested yet. Eagles typically nest around the end of February. “It would be no different if a big wind came and knocked it down,” she said. – Jessica Kerr

Internet’s anonymity fans flames of nastiness A lot is being said and written about the decline of civility in our political culture these days. It’s time we confront this Keith disturbing prob- BALDREY lem. An element of nastiness has always lurked beneath the surface of political debate, and people often say politics is a blood sport. True enough, but what is occurring these days is unprecedented. I’ve detected some smugness in Canadians’ response to what is commonly referred to as the “overheated political rhetoric” that is clouding U.S. politics. The vitriolic attacks that occur south of the border – where Sarah Palin and her Tea Party gang launch violence-laced verbal assaults on their opponents, who often succumb to temptation and respond in kind – could never happen here, we insist. But one doesn’t have to dig very deep in our own political culture to find rhetoric that is beyond “overheated” and inflammatory attacks that go well beyond what is acceptable in a fair and just society. Take, as just one example, the unprecedented verbal and written assaults on B.C.’s acting chief electoral office, Craig James. James had the temerity to make a technical ruling on the wording of the recall petition against B.C. Liberal MLA Ida Chong in her riding of Oak Bay-Gordon Head. His actions simply delayed, for a very short time, the start of the recall campaign. As a result, he has received almost 400 angry e-mails that he characterizes as “vile” and that include wishes that he meet a quick demise, as well as a handful of actual death threats – all for making the daring suggestion that people follow the law. anyone the chance to smear another without having to be held accountable for his or her actions. If I (or any other reporter or editor at this newspaper) were to libel someone, the consequences would be harsh. The aggrieved party would sue, and there’s a good chance the offending writer would pay a significant financial penalty. But on websites and blogs, people are allowed to post the most outrageous, libelous, threatening and inaccurate comments and because they do so under the cowardly cloak of anonymity (or pseudonyms) they face no consequences Yet, their comments hang in the air and get traded back and forth by like-minded individuals who will quickly accept anything said or written that neatly fits their preconceived views, no matter how much evidence shows those views to be wrong or inaccurate or based on hate or prejudice. Newspapers and other media outlets should return to the days of the rigid letters-to-the-editor policies that took steps to ensure all published comments were accurately signed. For now, they have adopted questionable standards for the sake of accumulating “hits” to their websites in order to impress

potential advertisers. Personally, I think Sarah Palin, the Tea Party and commentators like Glenn Beck are a menace. But that political movement is certainly entitled to participate in the political process – as long as its proponents don’t cross the line of decency, civility and accuracy. But don’t think for a moment the extremists who have poisoned political debate in the U.S. don’t also exist here. They can be found in Canada, on the left and right, and they are mostly on the Internet. If you don’t believe me, just ask Craig James. James, who now needs security for himself and his young family, revealed the nature of the attacks when asked about them by the media in the wake of the debate that was occurring in the U.S. after the Arizona shooting tragedy. Perhaps most revealing, the recall proponents were primarily outraged that James would choose to publicly talk about these hateful attacks in the middle of a recall campaign. Their response to the death threats sounded like an afterthought. James’ comments came this past week because a reporter asked him a question. But the fact he needed security was actually reported some weeks ago by the Globe and Mail. If you want more evidence of the lack of judgment and civility that exists among many Canadians, check out the comments thread that followed that story. More than 150 comments were posted. Almost none of them expressed any kind of sympathy at all for James, and in fact many said James deserved being threatened. Latest childish rebuke shows council is determined to resist mayor The Editor, Re: “Political dust-up continues over portraits at city hall,” the Now, Jan. 14. This investigation and subsequent rebuke by city council is just one more example of council’s campaign to undermine the efforts of the mayor as were the tactics employed by Councilor Lynne Sinclair at the time of the incident. Mayor Catherine Ferguson works hard to make White Rock a better place to live. Her efforts would be so much more effective if council would just work with her rather than constantly resisting, for whatever their ulterior motives might be.

Council passes buck The Editor, Re: “Political dust-up continues over portraits at city hall,” the Now, Jan. 14. It looks like another round of finger-pointing took place at City Hall and a White Rock council meeting broke out. This time, the “pointers” were the council members themselves, who conveniently ignored their participation in this summer’s “scandal” involving the removal of pictures of past mayors from those hallowed halls, and instead decided to take Mayor Catherine Ferguson to task for her seemingly One-Man Band mishandling of the situation. Now I ask you – does this council really want to pass the buck so badly on this issue that they need to be on record about it?

The piece would have been able to convey the same message but instead it came off as a rant and I almost discounted it. When papers start promoting specific agendas, they start falling into the realm of tabloids and propaganda. Please leave the emotion to columnists and letters to the editor.

Like them or not, rash of traffic laws in 2010 ensures a safer 2011 There are still a few out there who continue to disregard the law, their own safety, and their responsibility to others. But for the most part, the year-old law aimed at curbing the dangerous actions of compulsive talkers and texters among us has taken hold. It was a year ago last week that it became time to put down the cellphones and Blackberrys while driving – at least for those who weren’t intelligent enough to have already done so. The province started 2010 with

a ban on the use of all hand-held cellphones and portable devices used for games or texting while driving. Hands-free technology is still allowed – though rational voices immediately began calling for an extension to the ban, to include them. Studies have shown handsfree devices are actually just as dangerous as hand-held phones, because they pull our attention away from our driving And that is the real culprit in statistics that show using a cellphone while behind the wheel of

a car put you at equal risk of having an accident as driving while drunk. Speaking of which, the provincial government is to be applauded for two further measures it took in 2010 to help make roads a bit safer. Lowering the provincial impairment limit below the federal level – to .05 per cent blood-alcohol from .08 per cent – is an acknowledgment that the legal limit specified in the Criminal Code of Canada is not severe enough. You don’t have to be falling-down

drunk to be a deadly hazard to fellow motorists. And for those who choose speed, instead of alcohol, as their weapon of choice, the province has made it more painful for drivers who get caught speeding by more than 40 km/h over the speed limit. All in all, that amounts to a pretty strong year in favour of road safety. Not every new law deserves hearty applause, but this suite of 2010 traffic laws are worth a hardy pat on the back.

Islands as hot, lovable as sauces further south until you saw an island with the world’s only drive-up bubbling volcano. Voila! St. Lucia. But back to that zipline. I’d finished my dreamy break on St. Lucia with one regret. I wished I’d tried the volcano’s hot black mud bath. My remorse reminded me of Mark Twain’s quote, “You will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.” Even so, I’m having serious second thoughts about the Antigua Rainforest Canopy Tour, especially with the guide’s explanation, “There are a series of nine continuous ziplines crisscrossing this ravine which eventually bring you back here.” “Nine?!” Sweat drips down my face. I’m sure not all of it is caused from the tropical humidity. I’m holding up my hand like a cartoon cop. “I thought this was a zipline, as in, I zip across once and then I go back to the beach.” I can hear the beginning of a whine in my

voice. I’m not proud of it, but there it is. “Oh, no. The nine lines are all connected and get increasingly longer and higher.” He is saying this like it’s a good thing. “What’s the least amount I can do to get back here?” He tells me I can quit at five, though, he says, I should realize that the fifth one across the ravine is the highest and longest. I inform him that five ziplines will be fine. Other willing victims arrive from a cruise ship bus. I see a variety of ages eagerly stepping into their safety harnesses. I repeat my Twain-inspired resolution. And then I’m off. Suddenly, I’m back to being 10 years old, swinging on the Tarzan rope in my backyard. And then I’m remembering the teenage rush of the roller coaster. Something shifts… I am the Queen of the Zipline. I want it all now. By the time I’ve finished the ninth crossing, my heart is pumping hard, my shirt is pretty damp and my grin permanent.

Colleen Now contributor However, I’m also one of those people who feel compelled to collect experiences much like saner people collect stamps. Until my recent trip to St. Lucia and Antigua and Barbuda I had only a vague idea where these places were. I’d heard of weddings on St. Lucia, so I assumed it to be a postcard kind of place — but I’d never heard of Antigua and Barbuda. But I knew they were somewhere in the tropical Caribbean, so when the opportunity to visit came up, I jumped at the chance. After all, I live in British Columbia. It’s dark and it’s usually raining. I looked at my world map and saw islands curving down from Cuba like a chain of turquoise and emerald jewels all the way to South America. Near the lower third of those Blue Lagoon beauties, I found the two-island country of Antigua and Barbuda. If flying, you’d only have to go just a little

Let your swimwear do the work: This is the seemingly simple mantra from Swimco marketing specialist Alison Wandzura, who stresses it’s not the type of body the suit goes on, it’s the type of suit that goes on the body. “It’s not about putting yourself through cross-training to fit into a swimsuit — we always fall short of our own expectations,” Wandzura says. “People have to realize there are styles that work with what you’ve got.” We think swimsuits and automatically think exposure, she says. But with the right suit, the not-so-flattering bits are minimized and the assets get all the exposure, giving you the confidence to almost take it all off on the beach. My smile is about to get bigger. I’m enroute to meet Rosie McMaster of Susie’s Hot Sauce, and Rosie, it turns out, makes a roller coaster ride look tame. She opens her bungalow door, smiling. Rosie, like her house, is a veritable explosion of colour. The dining room has yellow pepper-coloured walls, chili-red jars, glittery paper poinsettias, silver garland in a basket, her open suitcase from her last chili contest trip and all her hot sauces lined up on the dining room table. Rosie talks like other people breathe. I learn that Susie was her dearly departed mother, who started Susie’s Hot Sauce. Rosie took over, expanding the now-50-year-old company from her mother’s original recipe to include a full range of new flavours. She has won awards at the Texas Fiery Food Show and travels to contests from Toronto to Germany. Between trips, she’s cooking up drums of peppers. I love hot sauce but I’ve found some are so hot, there’s no real taste. But Rosie has done her mama proud; these sauces have depth with a heat that doesn’t block the flavour. In between divine forkfuls of rum cake with mango hot sauce, I listen. Rosie has ideas for sauces, cakes, label designs, marketing plans, recipes, trips,

The 20th Michael BOOTH edition of the Sports Editor Surrey RCMP Senior Boys Basketball Classic came down to a catfight in Saturday’s final before the Enver Creek Cougars emerged with the championship banner thanks to a narrow 55-51 win over the Tamanawis Wildcats. The win marked the second time the Cougars have won the event while the fifth-place White Rock Christian Academy Warriors saw their winning streak end at three banners. “The guys were very excited to be playing in the final and for taking care of business and playing tough defensively all game,” said Cougars coach Rick Inrig. “We’ve been playing well all year and the biggest thing for us right now is just staying consistent. We need to keep focused on building our game up as we move toward the playoffs. We need to finish our league off and then do well from there.” The 10th-ranked Cougars opened the tourney with a 92-52 win over Fraser Heights followed by an 86-71 defeat of Southridge in their next outing. Enver then sneaked past nearby Fleetwood Park 68-66 in Friday’s semifinals. Parvez Jhaj led the Cougars with 17 points while Vikash Pillai helped out with 14. “We missed a bunch of foul shots down the stretch probably 10 of them in the last three and a half minutes,” Inrig said. “We just couldn’t hit anything in the last part of the fourth quarter for some reason and that’s not like us. They played us tough all game and those shots would have definitely helped us.” On the other side of the draw, the seventh-ranked Wildcats were making some noise of their own. Eagles take two of three on road golf report

One bad Michael BOOTH period is all that Sports Editor stood between the Surrey Eagles and an ideal road swing through Vancouver Island and the Sunshine coast in B.C. Hockey League play last weekend. After coughing up four goals in the first period of a 5-1 loss in Powell River Friday, the Eagles bounced back with a 2-1 overtime win over the Clippers in Nanaimo Saturday before cruising home with a 5-0 romp over the Capitals in Cowichan Sunday. Surrey is currently in third place in the BCHL’s Coastal Conference, one point back of the archrival Langley Chiefs, but the Birds have four games in hand. “We’ll take the four points out of six on the road, that’s a very good result,” said Eagles coach Matt Erhart. “We allowed two goals over the last eight-plus periods and that’s a real

positive. The best thing for us was the play of our penalty kill. We killed off 14 of 15 penalties and that’s something that had been plaguing us for the last six or seven games.” Surrey opened the weekend against the league-leading Kings in Powell River Friday night and before the game was 22 seconds old, the Eagles trailed 1-0. Powell River then bagged two more before the nine-minute mark, chasing Surrey goalie Karel StLaurent from the Eagles net. A late power-play goal pushed the Kings’ lead to 4-0 and the game was effectively over before the first intermission. Powell River scored the lone goal of the middle frame before Jeff Vanderlugt netted the only Surrey goal late in the third period. The following night in Nanaimo the Eagles had to work overtime to end the three game losing skid. After a scoreless first period, Brad

McGowan staked the Eagles to a 1-0 lead with an unassisted marker early in the second period. Nanaimo forced overtime with the only goal in the third before McGowan came through with the game winner on the only shot of the extra session. Surrey closed out the weekend swing in Cowichan Valley where back-up goalie Andrew Hunt blanked the Capitals 5-0. Surrey took advantage of some undisciplined play by the hosts to score two power-play goals in the first period. Dale Hunt completed his hat trick with two more goals in the second period. McGowan and Michael Stenerson also scored for Surrey. The Eagles will be back at the ferry terminal this week departing for games in Victoria (Friday) and Alberni Valley (Saturday) before returning home to face the Langley Chiefs Sunday (4 p.m.) at South Surrey Arena.

When he left the air and left life, Peter Alliss took over at the BBC with his unique witty demeanour. We lost out, as we only get to hear him guesting on the British Open because he decided to stay in England and not migrate to networks on this side of the Atlantic. For us the man, with the lash is Johnny Miller, who is not afraid to say exactly what’s on his mind and sorry if your feelings get in the way of his commentary. Joining that group is a man who has some fondness for Vancouver: Brandel Chamblee. Chamblee, the Golf Channel’s number one commentator, won only one once on the PGA Tour and that was here at the Air Canada Open. When asked what he liked about Vancouver and Surrey he said, “White Spot Triple O Hamburgers.” Hardly a ringing endorsement for tourism, but that was the way he called it. Connell Barrett recently had a great Q and A with Chamblee for Sports Illustrated in what appears to be from time to time an extended golf section inside their magazine. Connell said it best in describing the man: “Chamblee’s pointed candor, egghead humor, and allergy to clichés make him the most underrated TV commentator in golf, if not the best.”

Here is what Chamblee had to say when asked about his two major moments in 2010: “The shot of the year belonged to Phil Mickelson. His 6-iron on No. 13 at The Masters was perhaps the greatest shot in major history. That shot and scene had everything: It’s The Masters. Tiger’s in the picture. Lee Westwood, the best player in the world at that point, is leading. And the most gambling, charismatic player in the world has trees, pine needles and a downhill-sidehill lie over Rae’s Creek to a firm, nasty Augusta National green, from a spot where everyone else is laying up. And his caddie is trying to talk him out of it! And he pulls it off.

And finally what about Tiger’s new coach, Canadian Sean Foley? Will he be able to bring him back to those great moments in the beginning of career?

The year is 2040. Generation X is nearing or in retirement, while gen Y has risen to the senior ranks of corporations across North America and perhaps gen Z will be following in their footsteps in a very different world of work, as yet another generation enters the workforce. Virtual or remote work will become an accepted norm, ofﬁce spaces will shrink and be developed in regional hubs and the face of the workforce will be comprised of a network of individuals that spans the globe. Technology and communications will drastically evolve and alter how work

is performed, if Jillian Walker’s vision of the future comes true. “Virtual working and remote working is going to be huge,” says 25-year-old Walker, a bachelor of management in human resources student at the University of Lethbridge in Calgary. “The technology will automatically be awesome by the time we get to 2040, so we just have to think about how we adapt.” Facebook and Twitter will likely be relics of the past, replaced by other generations of social media -- something Walker sees as one of the deﬁning ways that employees communicate in the workforce of 2040. She took part in a competition of university students from across Canada last week called Focus2040 where she and other

students conducted a lot of research and just as much introspective thought about what the future will look like and why it matters now. “What I learned was the impact I have on other people. I had no idea I was able to recruit 200 people into a (Facebook) group in a week,” says Walker. “I’m not an HR expert. I just talked about the inﬂuence I have and the fact people . . . are inspired by the future.” The founder of the competition, Ezra Rosen, conspired with his colleagues at the Strategic Capability Network (SCN) to create a venue for budding HR students to think long term about how to plan now for the future workforce. “We needed to do something to make HR attractive to the brightest students in business school. The kinds of challenges most organizations are facing going into the future will align themselves with the types of people they have, so HR has become -- and will continue to become -- more important to the management of large organizations,” he says. When Rosen was in university during the 1960s, taking his MBA at UCLA, a professor assigned a project that made them predict what the world of management would look like in 1997. OK, some predictions panned out and others didn’t, but that’s not the point.

How will we work? “The accuracy wasn’t important,” says Rosen. “It was more starting to think about trends in society and ultimately the impact they would have, which really caused us to start thinking big picture. “Businesses tend to focus on the next quarter because of the pressures of the business analysts and investment community,” he says. “You need to be thinking long term.” By the time 2040 arrives, Walker will be 55 years old and imagines sustainability being a key theme throughout every facet of work, including how and where it’s done. Gender equity will be a given, she says, and the workforce will naturally be a more ﬂexible and yet interconnected web of smaller, more nimble organizations. “I don’t think we’re all going to be virtual in 30 years . . . but I don’t think it’s necessary to go into work,” says Walker. She juggled working and going to university full time and still volunteered for a variety of causes and organizations. Social responsibility will become a more critical factor in how employees decide what types of employers to pursue. “Immigration is going to skyrocket,” she says, pointing to forecasts by Statistics Canada that show the entire growth of the workforce in Canada will come from immigration in little more than a decade.

The life-cycle of a motor vehicle is long, complex, and inevitably involves the release of harmful smog-forming emissions into the planet’s atmosphere. The life of a vehicle on the road and the environmental impact it can have at the end of its life is especially pronounced when the vehicle in question is model year 1995 or older.

Vehicles of modelyear 1995 or older lack the latest technology for reducing airpolluting emissions. In fact, a 1995 or older vehicle produces up to 19 times more smog forming emissions than 2004 or newer vehicles.

Failure to remove fluids, such as gas, oil and coolants, could result in the contamination of our air, water and soil. Additionally, when recyclers reuse components of the vehicles that are safe to reclaim and do not contribute to the vehicle’s emissions, they reduce the

need to manufacture new parts. Therefore, it is important for owners to ensure their vehicles are properly disposed of in the end. Until March 31, 2011, drivers who own 1995 model year and older vehicles can do just that and get rewarded for it by participating in Retire Your Ride, Canada’s national vehicle recycling program. The

program has its own recycling Code of Practice that ensures the following steps are followed:

parts (except those related to emissions) are inspected, tested and prepared for resale.

❚ Draining of Fluids: On average, between 20 and 40 litres of fluid are removed from a vehicle and disposed of responsibly.

❚ Recycling and Recovery of Material: The empty body of the vehicle is crushed and shredded. Ferrous materials (such as iron) and non-ferrous materials (such as aluminum) are then separated and reused to make new
