One GRAND deed
Surrey woman finds honesty can be found in the unlikeliest of places – like under the hood
Doris Seelig wasn’t expecting a pleasant surprise when she received a repair quote from Newton Auto-Care, but that’s exactly what she got.
Tom ZYTARUK Staff Reporter
W
hen an auto mechanic tells you he has a surprise for you, it’s usually bad news. But not this time. Newton senior Doris Seelig, 70, found out recently that some businesses still live up to their name, and that the folks at Newton Auto-Care really do care. She’d called the garage last week after her Chrsyler Concorde went on the blink, and they came to pick it up at her house. Sometime later, she got a call from the shop, telling her what had to be done and when she could pick the car up. When she got to the garage, manager
Ken Payne presented her with a $600 bill for parts and labour. “He said, ‘Well, I’ve got another surprise for you, and I said, ‘Oh my God, it’s going to cost even more now,’” she recalled. That’s when he put a white letter envelope in her hand, containing $1,000 in cash. Mechanic Kelly Hunt had found it while he was working on Seelig’s Chrysler, and told his boss. “I had to get at the fuel pump,” Hunt explained. “In order to drop the fuel tank down, you gotta remove the back seat. Once I removed the back seat, that’s when I found the envelope.” Seelig had been missing that cash since July. It was one month’s pension that she’d
saved to go on a trip to Oregon with her Clover Loafers seniors group. She thought somebody had stolen it out of her camper. “It was terrible. I never thought that it would come back, never,” she recalled. So how did it get inside her car seat? Seelig figures she’d likely put the envelope on the seat during a shopping trip, threw a blanket over it, and it slipped down. See PHOTO, thenownewspaper.com She was so grateful, she called the Now. “He didn’t have to tell his boss,” she said of Hunt. “He could’ve just kept working on the motor. He didn’t have to tell anyone.”
❚PHOTO/Beau Simpson
For Hunt, her expression was reward enough. “She was just in shock,” he said. “She couldn’t believe it – she couldn’t believe she found the money after all this time.” Seelig says she’s saving the $1,000 for her next vacation. “The Washington coast is very nice,” she giggled. Indeed, lesser men might have been tempted to pocket the cash. But not Hunt. “Y’know, it’s karma, man,” he offered. “It’s just one of those things, that if you screw around like that it’s going to come back and haunt you at the end of the day.” He ended up being right about that karma thing. Seelig bought him a case of beer, for his honesty. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com
❚PEOPLE/Marlyn Graziano takes helm at the ‘Now’
Now’s new publisher returns to where she started her journalism career
MARLYN GRAZIANO
SURREY – The Now is proud to welcome Marlyn Graziano as its new publisher. The appointment was announced Thursday by Craig Barnard, senior vice-president of Postmedia Community Publishing Group. Graziano replaces former publisher Gary Hollick, who is pursuing other opportunities. Graziano is a former editor of the Now. She left the paper in 2000 and took on the corporate role of editorial director for the community pub-
lishing group, a role she will retain. Prior to her role as editor at the Now, Graziano was reporter and editor at the South Delta Today, North Delta Optimist and White Rock-South Surrey Sounder. “I am so excited to be back where I started my journalism career, covering school board in Surrey in the 1990s,” Graziano said. “Through the ensuing years, I spent many hours covering council in Surrey, White Rock and Delta. While much has changed in the last
20 years, it’s interesting to see that many issues remain the same. “People want to know what is going on in their community, they want to feel they are being consulted and they want to be part of the process. Community newspapers are instrumental in keeping people connected with the communities, and I am proud to be back as part of the Now team.” For the past 10 years, Graziano has worked closely with editorial and sales teams throughout the com-
munity publishing group to develop new publications and new approaches to delivering news on multiple platforms. She has been instrumental in leading the community publishing group’s Digital First strategy. Graziano and her husband Dave Londry have raised their family in Surrey’s Fraser Heights neighbourhood, where they have lived since moving to B.C. from Ontario in 1989. – The Now

❚BUSINESS/Antique mall will soon be history itself
Closure in Cloverdale
With only a day to digest the shocking news, reporter Marisa Babic talks to shoppers and vendors about how the much-beloved antique mall’s closing will change the face of the community forever
❚BRIEFLY
Three arrested for murder of Surrey mom SURREY – Police have made three arrests in the 2007 murder of Amanpreet Kaur Bahia, a Surrey mother of three. The victim’s husband, Baljinder Singh Bahia, 41, was arrested, along with Tanpreet Kaur Athwal, 42, of Surrey, and Eduard Viktorovitch Baranec, 33, of Burnaby. The arrests were made Friday. Amanpreet Bahia, 33, was found dead at about 11:20 a.m. on Feb. 7, 2007 in the basement of the family’s home in Newton. She was discovered by family members returning from an outing lying in a pool of blood, one of her young daughters sitting with her body. Two of the girls were at home at the time while the oldest was at school. The three people taken into custody to face charges of first-degree murder and were to appear in Surrey provincial court Monday.
Shakeout happens Wednesday at 10 a.m.
The closure of Cloverdale Antique Mall will change the historic community’s identity, its co-owner said.
Marisa BABIC
Staff Reporter
SURREY – Cloverdale Antique Mall’s catchy slogan is “thousands of items, millions of memories.” But soon B.C.’s largest antique mall itself will be nothing more than a memory. Co-owner Tim Garrett says skyrocketing rent is forcing him to close the highly popular mall that has been drawing customers locally and from as far away as Vancouver Island and Washington state for a dozen years. On Friday afternoon, the mall was busy with collectors strolling through its many booths hoping to spot a treasure and as well as casual browsers who drop by the mall from time to time just to enjoy a nostalgic trip down memory lane. The word “sad” was on the lips of many visitors after they learned about the mall’s fate. “The word has gotten out,” Garret said, in noting the mass of people wandering the aisles. In an interview with the Now, Garrett said the antique business is still strong and has largely been unscathed by the recession. Garrett and his business partner were hoping for many more good years ahead but the rent rise has left those dreams in ruins. He’s been in negotiations over the rent hike with the landlord since October, but they have failed to reach a satisfactory agreement.
Garrett declined to identify the figure publicly but said the rent rise is “significant.” “Our business is strong and it’s been strong because we focus on getting the right inventory at the right prices,” he said. “Our financial situation is reasonable for what we are paying now but as soon as you add the extra dollars it’s no longer reasonable.” Garrett’s lease is officially up at the end of February and there will be discounts for shoppers. The landlord may have already lined up a new tenant, he noted, at least there’s plenty of interest for the large space in Cloverdale Square Village. With a slight note of disdain in his voice, Garrett mused that the new tenant might well be a giant retailer selling “products from China by the bucket-load.” The mall’s closure will place about 10 employees out of work and the 40 permanent vendors will have to pack up their wares. Mike Harrison is a staffer and a vendor. He has a “guy’s type space” upstairs. Harrison, who has been associated with the mall for four years, said he’ll miss a job he loves dearly and the joys of sourcing finds for his booth. “I won’t be having the thrill of the hunt and getting a paycheque to do it,” he said. Another vendor and her partner were busy wrapping up some of the
wares in their booth. “We’re sad to see it go,” she said. Ron, a customer who didn’t want to give his last name, has been visiting the Cloverdale Antique Mall since it was opened in 1999. A few years later, Bill Reid and his business partner sold the place to Garrett and his business associate. Ron, who was carrying a couple of cast iron candleholders, paused to talk to Garrett and express his dismay over the news. “I’m absolutely sad,” he said. Ron was buying four rustic, castiron candleholders to glam up his patio and Garrett offered him a 20 per cent discount off his purchase. The candleholders match a set of eight urns he had purchased earlier. Though he’s a serious collector, Ron said sometimes he and his wife just like to come for a stroll in the antique mall. “I’m going to miss this store and the people,” he said wistfully. In decades past, Cloverdale’s main street was lined with antique stores. When the antique mall opened, some of the shopkeepers moved into the mall. Today, there are just a couple of antique stores left on the main street. Now with the closure of the Cloverdale Antique Mall, the town’s identity is in transformation. “The identity of Cloverdale will have changed,” Garrett said of the historic town famous for its antique stores and the rodeo. mbabic@thenownewspaper.com

The Great British Columbian Shakeout, billed as the largest earthquake drill in B.C. history, is designed to educate the public on how to protect themselves during a large shaker in the Cascadia Region, which sits on a geological fault line. The date was chosen because Jan. 26 it marks the anniversary of the last magnitude-9 earthquake in British Columbia in 1700, which shook the entire province, Washington, Oregon and California.

Local MPs take stab at Bloc’s proposal to ban Sikh kirpans SURREY – Local Tom ZYTARUK Members of Parliament Staff Reporter think the Bloc Quebecois’ call to ban Sikh religious knives from Canada’s House of Commons is a pretty dull idea. The separatist party suggested last week that Kirpans should not be allowed in the Parliament buildings in Ottawa after security guards denied a representative of the World Sikh Organization and three other Sikhs entry into Quebec’s national assembly because they were wearing Kirpans. The small ceremonial daggers are religious symbols all baptized Sikhs are required to wear. They represent the power truth has to cut through falsehood. “Wearing the Kirpan represents one of the fundamental commandments of baptized Sikhs, who must wear one at all times,” said Sukh Dhaliwal, Liberal MP for Newton-North Delta. “The ironic part of this whole debate is the fact that the Kirpan is considered an instrument of ‘ahimsa’ or non-violence. The principle of ahimsa is to actively prevent conflict. “The Parti Quebecois and Bloc Quebecois have little respect for the religious freedoms guaranteed to all Canadians by the Charter, and what is worse is the manner in which they have politicized such an intrinsic right.
“I am also very disappointed,” Dhaliwal said, “by the lack of a response that has been offered on the issue by the Conservative government. For a party that has supposedly tried to reach out to minority communities across the country, their silence has demonstrated the calculated politics behind such engagement.” The Now sought comment from Russ Hiebert, Conservative MP for South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale, on the issue but he did not return our phone calls. See LETTERS, page 9 Dona Cadman, Conservative MP for Surrey North, had this to say: “If a man was dressed in a kilt and had his knife in his sock, we would not think anything of it. Why is a Kirpan different?” Her Conservative colleague Nina Grewal, MP for Fleetwood-Port Kells, said the Bloc is being hypocritical because its members joined MPs of other stripes in passing a resolution the New Democrats presented in April 2006 to officially recognize the five articles of Sikh faith, with the Kirpan being one of them. “They’re making a lot of huff-and-puff about this thing,” Grewal said of the Bloc. “I have always supported religious freedom.” tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

All residents and business owners are responsible under City By-Laws to treat/clear any accumulated snow and or ice from sidewalks located adjacent to their property as soon as possible to ensure the safety of pedestrians. When clearing sidewalks of snow please do not push snow onto the street as snow ploughs may end up pushing the snow onto the sidewalk area. This may also present a hazard to motorists or cause vehicle access issues. It’s usually best to shovel the snow towards or onto your property if possible.

SURREY – A woman has died in a house fire in South Surrey Thursday evening. The fire, which was called in shortly after 9 p.m., was in the 3000-block of 184th Street. The house was an older home on an acreage, said John Caviglia, Surrey deputy fire chief. When firefighters arrived, two occupants of the house, who had been in the basement, said there might still be another person inside upstairs. The fire was centered in the upper part of the house, Caviglia said, and had burned through the roof in one corner.
“Fire services did everything they could but for one adult, it was unfortunately too late,” Caviglia said. That person was found dead inside the building. The deceased woman has been identified as Kelly Marie Axelson, 48. In spite of the fact the fire was well established when crews arrived, they managed to put it out fairly quickly. The two surviving occupants were uninjured. Surrey RCMP Cpl. Drew Grainger said the investigation into the fire is ongoing. – Carolyn Cooke

Surrey RCMP’s new spokesman an award-winning police officer SURREY – The new Tom ZYTARUK spokesman for the Staff Reporter Surrey RCMP’s says it can be “unnerving” to be surrounded by a small sea of camera guys and reporters when big crime news breaks in the city. But Cpl. Drew Grainger can handle it – he’s been in some pretty wild situations. He’s worked general duty, been a member of the specialized Emergency Response Team, been on bike patrol and used to be in charge of the foot beat in Whalley, where he logged countless hours walking the city centre’s meaner streets. As team leader he played a big role in making it difficult for pushers to peddle their drugs in the downtown core. In 2009, Grainger won the Surrey Board of Trade’s Police Officer of the Year Award, after being nominated by his peers. He’s also worked in South Surrey. In 2007, he and his crew received an award at the B.C. Crime Prevention Symposium for Project Blueline. Created in an effort to curb liquor and drug offences, theft and vandalism along 152nd Street by “positively connecting with local young people, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights, Project Blueline enjoyed so much success the provincial government took notice. “I love Surrey,” Grainger says. “I am so proud of the work we have here and the work that gets done here, and I’m proud to be the face of the detachment to talk about, or to convey our message, about the work that we’re doing.” tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

Potential leadership match-ups intriguing As our two main political parties continue to move towards electing new leaders, it’s worth noting that each Keith of them face BALDREY remarkably similar options when it comes to picking a new face. For example, either party can opt to walk along a more rigid ideological path. Kevin Falcon represents the most right-wing option for the B.C. Liberals, while the NDP’s Adrian Dix is a mirror image of him, albeit on the leftwing side of the spectrum. And both parties are fielding candidates that appear to have a more populist streak to them. Christy Clark of the B.C. Liberals and John Horgan from the NDP seem to fit this bill. Finally, both parties are fielding strong, centrist candidates: the NDP’s Mike Farnworth and the B.C. Liberals’ George Abbott and Mike de Jong are probably closer to each other when it comes to policies than they are with some of their own rivals in their own parties. And each party is eyeing the other one, wondering what kind of scenario will develop after they make their choices. Judging from what many people are saying in both parties, I suspect each party is hoping the other one opts for the most ideological candidate. The B.C. Liberals seem to relish the prospect of running against Dix, whose close association with the class warfare tactics of the former Glen Clark government gives his opponents lots of ammunition to fire back at him. Likewise, New Democrats would love to square off against Falcon, who they consider to be too right-wing for many middle-ofthe-road voters who may consider voting for either party.

ers think they are leftists. As such, Farnworth could appeal to a lot of soft B.C. Liberals who may be tired of their party but who don’t want to embrace a jarringly different kind of philosophy. Abbott is the same kind of candidate. He could easily appeal to soft NDP voters who are uneasy about the New Democrats’ reputation on economic issues. Since the B.C. Liberals choose their leader first, it will be interesting to see if that choice has a direct bearing on the views of NDP members. Will it provide them with a guide to the better choice, or will it simply confuse things even further? For example, if Clark wins, NDPers have to ask themselves which of their candidates would fare best against her. Would Dix or, say, Farnworth stand the best chance? Or if Abbott wins, is the NDP better off to go with an ideologue (Dix) or a moderate like Farnworth? Imagine a Falcon victory coupled with a Dix win: that would create a lively but polarizing choice for voters – right versus left, with no prisoners being taken. Of course, many NDP members won’t take any of this into con-
sideration when they mark their ballots. Winning elections is not the motivation for many of them – ensuring the party rigidly sticks to an ideological path is more important. Nevertheless, the potential match-ups are intriguing. Will it be an ideologue versus a moderate, or a populist versus an ideologue, or a moderate versus a populist? Both parties face the same array of choices. Whatever the outcome, it’s going to be fascinating to watch. Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global BC Keith.Baldrey@globalnews.ca

Of course, any problems the general public may have with either candidate don’t necessarily cut much ice with the party members who will be choosing the leaders. In fact, Dix may hold an advantage over his rivals precisely because he is the most left-wing candidate, given that a major chunk of the party membership likely shares his philosophical views. Both parties seem to be less sure about the so-called populist candidates. Some New Democrats think Clark would be an inviting target, while others I talk to are nervous about her charisma and communications skills. Horgan is the candidate who may puzzle the B.C. Liberals the most, at least for now. He’s relatively unknown and doesn’t have a lot of baggage from the past. But it is the middle-of-the-road candidates who seem to have both sides equally nervous. Farnworth, Abbott and, to a lesser degree, de Jong, are the types of leaders who can poach voters from other parties. Not everyone who votes for the B.C. Liberals consider themselves right-wing, just as not all NDP vot-

All Canadians should decry ban of kirpans in Quebec
“If we want the best from the professionals in our society why would we be so resistant to heeding their advice?” Delta schools do well on the tests, but if parents want to know how suitable a neighbourhood school may be for their child, they would do far better to talk to other parents, phone the principal and visit the school. Real estate companies may want numbers, but then they have no vested interest in the actual validity of those numbers. Teachers and parents resist the tests mostly because they know that false impressions about schools, whether positive or negative, are being circulated by the media based on FSA results. Recent initiatives from the ministry about “learning for the

21st century” and “personalized learning” have been well received in Delta, but could quickly be suffocated in an atmosphere of standardized testing and ranking of schools. As far as possible, schools in Delta treat students as individuals and try to provide the very best for each student, no matter who they are or what background they come from. One can only hope that candidates for leadership of the parties will approach the issue with an open mind instead of the slavish dogmatism we have seen in the past. Let’s work together and find a better way to do things. If we want the best from the professionals in our society why would we be so resistant to heeding their advice?

The Editor, Our society wishes to express concern that Quebec’s National Assembly would, in this day and age, still think it necessary or sensible to ban Sikhs entering the National Assembly building wearing their kirpans. The finest security agencies in the world found the carrying of a kirpan to be acceptable during the intense security blanket of last year’s Olympic Games. Our nation’s Supreme Court ruled in 2006 that it was not a weapon and that barring it is a violation of Charter rights. We urge Quebec’s National Assembly to reconsider its decision, and all citizens of Canada to decry this violation of our fundamental rights and freedoms.

Editorial cartoon in ‘Now’ called Harper’s number The Editor, Re.: Editorial cartoon, the Now, Jan. 21. Thanks to Ingrid Rice for her editorial cartoon showing Stephen Harper getting away with
a false start. In December, Harper categorically denied his party would be calling an election any time soon. Technically true to his word, the Conservatives instead will be precipitating an election by introducing a “poison pill” in the February budget when they will propose to discontinue the per-vote funding of political parties. This will likely goad the other parties into a nonconfidence vote. Per-vote funding started in 2003 as an alternative to party financing by big business and trade unions, i.e., to level the playing field. The $2 per vote adds up to a small portion of the federal budget, it goes to the voter’s party of choice, and it encourages more Canadians to vote. Ending it will take us back to greater government control by special interests and further away from a system that is free, fair and democratic. Something that actually does need to be changed is the exemption for political ads, like the ones the Conservatives started last Thursday, from the Canadian Code of Advertising Standards’ “truth in advertising” requirements. I can think of few things more harmful to a fair election than attack ads full of untruths about political opponents, yet there is no law against this.

The Editor, Re: “Principals in Surrey mum on FSA tests,” the Now, Jan. 21. It is heartening, though entirely unsurprising, to read the call from the B.C. principals’ association to scrap the FSA tests for grades 4-7. In their original form, the tests had some utility, but it’s high time the ministry produced a better way to assess elementary schools – one that does not result in inaccurate rankings.

I need hearing aids but have heard some negative comments about them. Are they worth trying? Yes, hearing aids are definitely worth trying. The numerous benefits to your quality of life almost always outweigh the few imperfections of hearing aids. Often, people with negative reactions have older hearing aids that use outdated technology, or they may be among a small minority of people whose hearing loss is less treatable with hearing aids. Also remember that it is human nature to focus on what is not working well, even though these same people may be appreciating many advantages from their hearing aids. The fact is that overall satisfaction with hearing aids has significantly improved over the years as technology has advanced, and the vast majority of people are quietly enjoying the new life experiences hearing aids bring.

This is a popular question, especially at this time of year with new year’s resolutions. A cleanse, also referred to as a detox, is a supplement and dietary intervention to assist with the body’s elimination of waste products (detoxificaiton). Most people think of cleanse as something you do for a few weeks at a time and perhaps a few times a year. This may temporarily relieve your symptoms of fatigue, bloating, constipation, and headaches but these symptoms often return after the cleanse is completed.
If you are feeling toxic and experience fatigue, bowel issues or chronic pain, consider consulting a naturopathic physician to determine your nutritional needs and ways to reduce these stressors on your body. We can formulate a detox program, involving diet, nutrition and perhaps colon hydrotherapy, to get you feeling good now and a maintenance plan towards feeling great for the long term.

What is a Cleanse?
The body usually does a pretty good job of detoxification on a daily basis when optimal nutrition is available and when the body is not overwhelmed by dietary, environmental and emotional stressors.

Q How long do dentures last? A
Q A
This is a very common question, and the answer depends on many things. If the dentures are worn in your pocket, they will probably last forever, however dentures are and were meant to be worn in the mouth.
The best thing denture wearers can do if their denture is more than 3 years old and it has not been looked at by a dental professional, is to call our office. I’d be happy to see you and give you some complimentary advice. Don’t wait until you feel like something is wrong - that’s how irreversible damage to the structure that supports the denture can occur, and that is exactly what we would like to prevent. Call us today for your complimentary consultation.

Does eliminating fats in my diet help to lose weight? No!! Fats are hugely important to our diet.Your brain’s fuel is made up of fats. Unlike your body whose fuel is based in sugars, the brain’s fuel is fat. A variety of fats are hugely importants to a variety of neural functions, ie., from nerve transmission to cell membrane integrity, etc. In addition, fats provide the basis for the liver to make over 80% of your needed cholesterols. Monounsaturated fats increase the good cholesterols and lower the bad cholesterols. From the cholesterol your liver also makes your bile which is important to break down fats in the small intestine. From this line up the liver also makes your steroid hormones. Various fats are also used as transport systems for vitamins and minerals from the gut to into the body and then throughout the body. Good fats include monounsaturated fats (walnuts, almonds, pistachios, avocados, olive oil) and polyunsaturated fats (salmon & other fish oils, krill, safflower and sunflower oils (these are your omega 3 fats). Other good sources are: coconut oil, hemp seed oil, flax seed oil, seeds, algae, leafy greens, are all very good fats for the body. BUT, if you eat bad fats, they will aid the creation of those extra pounds you want to get rid of. Trans fats and saturated fats are not good for us and do put on weight: Fast food fats, junk food fats, margarines, cookies, shortening, cakes, doughnuts, potato chips, etc. Have fun eating good fats and getting rid of your bad fat!!

I get pain frequently. Headaches, joint stiffness, numbness what can I do?
Most pain or myofascial pain is related to trigger points in the muscles. Trigger points, or small contractions knots in the muscle, result in pain and will lead to symptoms such as headaches, neck and jaw pain, back pain, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, fibromyalgia, tendonitis, bursitis, arthritis and other myofascial pain conditions. By releasing trigger points in the body, muscles become strong and relaxed, circulation is restored and the tissue is once again flooded with oxygen and nutrients. Dr. Rod is trained in Trigger Point Therapy for Myofascial Pain by Dr. Hal Blatman, Clinical Director of the Blatman Pain Clinic in Cincinnati, OH. Dr. Blatman is Board Certified in Pain Management, an Orthopedic Surgeon at Bethesda Hospital and also President of the American Holistic Practitioners Association. He was trained by Dr. Janet Travell, MD, founder of Trigger Point Therapy and physician to John F. Kennedy. Injections are used that are safe and holistic unlike cortisone that cause numerous side effects.

Antlers abound in design-contest suites Richmond (Karen Wong). Similar themes emerged in the suites — but certainly not by design. “We noticed all the antlers, yes — it seems to be a bit of a trend,” said Woolley. “I think five of the six (contestants) had antlers somewhere in their suites, even on a bookshelf or somewhere.… The interesting thing is, they were reluctant to blog (during the design stage) because they didn’t want to give anything away, so they were pretty surprised by what the others came up with.” In all of the completed suites, bathrooms are fairly standard, and kitchens are graced with appliances of the familiar stainless-steel variety. But other living areas are distinctive. Scott used chain to hang a whimsical glass-bottom ceiling fixture with plastic gold fish, while Wong put emphasis on multiple images of Euro cities and other travel destinations, all framed by two brightyellow strips of paint. Meloche’s cozy living area is graced by an arched silver light weighted by a huge chunk of marble and tree trunks cut into a coffee table and matching sides. The competition judges are Kari Henshaw, founder of Insight Design Group, Sarah Bancroft, editor of Vitamin Daily, and Matthew Budgeon, a film and TV production designer. Winners of the grand prize and “fan favourite” vote will be announced Feb. 28. Follow the contest online at www.bestyoungdesigner.com.

Animals with antlers, birds Tom ZILLICH and tree branches are trends Staff reporter in the home-decoration world, judging by entries in the B.C.’s Best Designer contest happening in South Surrey. Six condos in the “Arc” building at Morgan Crossing served as templates for six young designers involved in the challenge, with prizes of $2,000 cash and a trip to New York up for grabs. The general public can win prizes, too, by visiting the homes, picking a favourite suite and entering the “fan favourite” draw for a TV and iPad computer. A three-judge panel will select the grand-prize winner. By design, each of the finalists is under age 30, each given budgets of between $10,000 and $12,000 to furnish and decorate a suite. “We really wanted to give younger designers a chance to showcase their work,” said Bryan Woolley, who organized the competition. “They went to work in mid-December, and we didn’t put a lot of conditions on what they could do — basically, just what they’d do for a client.” Doors to the completed suites opened Jan. 16, with voting continuing until Feb. 20 at 15775 Croydon Ave., next to Thrifty Foods. The finalists include four Vancouver-based designers (Britt McMaster, Daniel Meloche, Jennifer Scott and Penelope Sloan), one from Burnaby (Joanna Kado) and another from

Highway 99 Northbound Shoulder Bus Lane The Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure is starting a bridge widening project on Highway 99 northbound at the Serpentine River Bridge. These improvements are part of the Shoulder Bus Lane Project currently underway on Highway 99 that will increase transit capacity, reliability and efficiency for Highway 99. This project will see the bridge widened to accommodate a 4 metre shoulder bus lane on the east side of the structure. During construction there will be a speed limit reduction along this corridor to 60 kilometres per hour on the approaches and exits of this structure. In addition, there will be slight changes in the alignment of the highway in this area to allow for construction activities. Once implemented, the speed limit reduction is anticipated to be in effect 24 hours a day until project completion.
Glass cutting boards don’t cut it As part two of a series of three columns on cutting, this one will focus on cutting boards. (If you missed my previous column on knives, please email me at dez@ chefdez.com and I will be Chef more than happy to send DEZ it to you. The next column will focus on cutting techniques.) Almost every household has some type of cutting board to offer a place for chopping or slicing, in order to protect their kitchen countertops. With so many cutting boards to choose from, hopefully I can help shed some light on this subject by discussing the pros and cons of the three main types available: glass, plastic and wood. One of my biggest pet peeves is a glass cutting board, and I take every opportunity to advise anyone I can of the reasons. Tempered glass cutting boards are made to offer a surface that is easily sanitized by hand or by putting them in the dishwasher, and offer a surface that will never deteriorate. However, because this cutting surface is so hard, it will dull even the best kitchen knife faster than any other cutting board. They usually depict an attractive photo or print under the surface of the glass, which makes them desirable to have out and ready to use, but I would highly recommend using them only as a serving platter and nothing else. Plastic cutting boards, on the other hand, offer a softer surface that won’t damage knives and can still be placed in

the dishwasher for cleaning. The plastic surface can also be subjected to sanitizing cleansers, like bleach, without damaging the board itself. However, recent studies have revealed that over time, bacteria can build up in the scores from knives on the surface that even sanitizing will not remove completely. When deep scores have been made in a cutting board, it is recommended to resurface the board. Plastic boards are very difficult to resurface, and it is much easier to purchase a new one. Wooden cutting boards have been suspected of holding bacteria, and many households have switched to plastic for this very reason. But wood offers natural antiseptic qualities. The wood also can naturally re-seal small scores from cutting. A food-grade mineral oil should be used on a regular basis to help stop the wood from drying out and cracking. I prefer to use plastic cutting boards for meat or seafood, as I can sanitize them in the dishwasher — until they get well used that is. Wooden cutting boards offer a cutting surface for all other applications such as fruits, vegetables, etc. I do not own a glass cutting board. As a natural cleanser, I often sprinkle a cutting board liberally with salt and rub the surface with the cut sides of a halved lemon. The salt acts as an abrasive; the lemon offers a natural acid and also a fresh clean scent. Send your food/cooking questions to dez@chefdez.com.
This work is planned to begin mid January and should be completed by spring 2011. For more information please contact Project Manager David Mintak at 604 660-8211 or by e-mail at David.Mintak@gov.bc.ca

hen I was Jane CASSIE seven Now contributor years old, a harmless garter snake crossed my path and put me into panic mode. Now, half a century later, I still get the heebie-jeebies whenever I think of one. So after hearing that a one-eyed eel (close enough to a snake) may be lurking about in the nearby riverbed, I freeze in my tracks. My husband and I are visiting Palau, an archipelago of 500-or-so lush islands that sprawl over the North Pacific. And as well as checking out the amazing treasures that thrive beneath the waves, we explore a few above the pristine surface — the Ngardmau Waterfall being one of them. As legend has it, the curtain of water that plummets 30 metres (100 feet) was created by this slimy creature. After falling into an endless sleep, he magically transformed into the river and his head became the waterfall. Whether fact or fiction, snake or eel, my skin begins to crawl after listening to this mythical tidbit. “Fear not,” Jayvan reassures with a cheeky smile. “The only slithery thing you’ll cross today is the path.” We’d been prepped on what to bring on this hour-long trek that bisects Babeldaob’s jungle: bug repellent, comfy shoes, bathing suit. How tricky could it be? The walking sticks that our Palauan guide, Jayvan, doled out should have been my first clue. Thank heavens for this trusty crutch. Like a third leg, it guides me down 375 stairs that cleave through the tangled flora. It serves as my staff while navigating streams, protruding roots and mucky mud holes. It also acts as my supporter when taking a breather, which happens regularly. But it’s not
One hungry croc as seen from the deck of Jungle River Boat cruiser. my rapid respirations that stop me in my tracks, it’s the sheer beauty. Towering mahoganies, leafy papayas and feathery palms mesh with 1,200 plant species in this undisturbed Micronesian rainforest. The flourishing
array serves as a canopy on my route and cloaks the terrain, forever rolling. In the distance, spilling out of Mother Nature’s plush overcoat, is our eventual destination point, Palau’s largest waterfall. And from these peek-a-boo views, it looks more serene than serpent-like. But after yesterday’s jungle boat cruise, there’s one thing we know: This tropical wonderland is home to the living. Prior to launching off on this reality ride, my husband’s T-shirt became a popular hangout for a friendly fruit bat. While dining on the sumptuous Palauan buffet, we JANE CASSIE shared our picnic table with a curious, wide-eyed monkey. And when plying the lush mangrove-flanked tributary, we were greeted by a jawgaping crocodile. Yes, he was hungry — but fortunately not for our photographing fingers! “No worries,” Jayvan says, taking me out of my dream state. “Aside from a few harmless snakes, Palau is peoplefriendly.” I make like his shadow, after giving this comment some serious thought, and heed closely to his heels. Accompanied by a cacophony of bird song, we cross tracks that take us to both the past and future. Railway ties, now choked by overgrowing flora, were used by the Japanese during the Second World War when they mined the area for aluminum. Paralleling these rusty relics is a new gleaming monorail that will soon whisk non-hikers from the trailhead to the falls. And, by 2012, a zipline will provide adventure seekers with

Within minutes, we’re safely across and beneath the fabulous falls. We silently watch this spectacle of nature — unblemished, untarnished, unspoiled and,

I smiled weakly as she led me to my bedroom and asked if I would stay there for five minutes. I didn’t have the strength to ask her what she was going to do, so just nodded and sat down on the bed quietly and waited. I could hear my daughter rustling around in her bedroom and some whispering with my husband. To her word, five minutes later, she came back into my bedroom and took me by the hand. “Mommy, I’d like to take you to a very special place,” she said. Upon entering her bedroom, she grandly gestured around the room and said, “Welcome to Bonjour Spa!” My jaw dropped. The room was dark, lit only in flame-less candles. There was soft jazz playing on a small stereo tucked in #17858 the corner.

I could feel myself relaxing. “You know,” my daughter said matter-of-factly, “this spa is a very busy one. We have a long wait time.” She motioned over to the
Barbies and dolls laid out in a row beside the bed. “They have been waiting for hours.” I suppressed a laugh and nodded seriously. “Thank you for fitting me in,” I replied appreciatively. After she was done rubbing in the lotion, she handed me her princess cup. “Please have some water,” she said smiling. I took some sips of water
from her princess cup and thanked her for the session. She leaned over, kissed my cheek and gave me a huge hug. “How much do I owe you?” I asked as I got up from the bed. “Mommy, for you it’s always free,” she said giggling. As I kissed her head and tucked her into bed, I felt like the luckiest mom in the world. It turns out it wasn’t the “me” time that I
needed that day, but rather, to feel appreciated. The Bonjour Spa should exist in every mom’s home, to have whenever her day gets a bit harried. But be forewarned, the spots do fill up quickly. Eagles leapfrog Chiefs into second place
The Surrey Michael BOOTH Eagles moved Sports Editor into sole possession of second place in the B.C. Hockey League’s Coastal Conference with wins in two of three weekend games. Surrey was trimmed 2-1 by the Grizzlies in Victoria Friday night before bouncing back to double up the Alberni Valley Bulldogs 4-2 in Port Alberni Saturday night. The Eagles then dispatched the Langley Chiefs 3-1 on home ice Sunday to overtake the Chiefs for second place in the standings. “It was a good weekend for us and even in the game we lost, we still played very well,” said Eagles coach Matt Erhart. “Going back to our last five games, we’ve only allowed six goals in that time. So we’ve definitely tightened things up defensively and at the same time we’re obviously getting good goaltending.” The high point of the weekend for the Eagles was renewing acquaintances with archrival Langley Sunday. Surrey currently
has four games in hand on the Chiefs and Sunday’s win allowed the Eagles to pass their rivals into second place in the standings without expending that four-game cushion. Surrey got off to a quick start, outshooting Langley 16-10 in the first period and 32-21 over two frames while building a 2-0 lead. The Eagles made it 3-0 midway through the final frame before the Chiefs spoiled Surrey goalie Karel St-Laurent’s shutout bid with their lone goal of the evening. Brad McGowan led the Eagles with a pair of goals while StLaurent stopped 32 Langley shots to earn second star honours. Dale Hunt scored the other Surrey goal. “We hadn’t played them in about a month so it was almost refreshing to play them again,” Erhart said. “It’s always a pretty intense game when we play them and this was even more so because both teams wanted second place. We managed to score one goal in each period and played pretty solid defensively and that was enough.”
Saturday night in Port Alberni the Eagles needed three powerplay goals to subdue the Bulldogs 4-2. A fast start once again worked in Surrey’s favour as the Eagles out-shot the Bulldogs 22-11 in the first period, scoring twice. Alberni Valley battled back to tie the game in the second period before Surrey pulled away for good with two more power-play markers over the final 21 minutes of regulation time. Defenceman Mitch Jones scored a pair of goals with the man advantage to pace the Eagles’ attack. Hunt and Richard Vanderhoek provided the Eagles’ first period goals. “The game was tied at one point but I thought we controlled the play for at least 80 per cent of the time,” Erhart said. “They scored on a four-minute power play to start the second period and that seemed to give them some momentum but we stuck with it. Our best players were our best players this weekend and we needed that.” Surrey started the weekend in Victoria Friday night where the
Grizzlies used some puck luck to pull out a win. Surrey led 1-0 after the first period on a Hayden Trupp goal set up by McGowan. In the second period the bounces went Victoria’s way as the Grizzlies tied the contest on a shot that deflected off two Surrey defenders. The Grizzlies then took the lead for good late in the middle frame on a goal the Eagles would like to forget about. “The game-winning goal was one of those once-a-year ones that you can only shake your head at,” Erhart said. “The puck was behind the net and two guys went for it. The puck bounced up in the air and then rolled down the goalie’s back and into the net. It wasn’t even a real shot but what can you do?” Surrey is back in action with another three games this weekend. After playing a home-and-home set with the Merritt Centennials (in Surrey Friday; in Merritt Saturday), the Eagles wrap up the week at home against Cowichan Sunday. Game time Sunday is 4 p.m. at South Surrey Arena.
❚Rams coach hit with suspension Former South Surrey Big Kahuna Rams coach Chris Butschler has been suspended for two years after an investigation by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport. In a CCES press release issued Monday, the organization stated Butscher “committed an anti-doping rule violation for tampering when he refused to allow anti-doping personnel access to his players during an unannounced in-competition doping control session.” The release added Butschler waived his right to a hearing, and accepted a two-year period of ineligibility from sport. Butschler resigned as coach of the Rams following the 2010 B.C. Junior Football Conference season.

The Sharks kick off play this weekend in the premier league and coach David Benoit admits he’s cautiously optimistic, despite not being able to play any preseason games due to closed fields in Surrey. Most of the veteran Sharks will be seeing action for the first time since last spring, owing to the club’s fall schedule being contested by a team of younger players. “We use the fall season as a developmental tool,” Benoit said. “We treat it as an under-24 team so those guys can get a chance to play against good competition. That’s also the age bracket — from 20 to 24 — that we tend to lose as a club. “We want to create a place where these guys make some friends, work hard together and hopefully stick around to keep playing down the
road.” Bayside opens the schedule on the road against Cowichan on Vancouver Island. Benoit admits it will be a stiff test given Cowichan’s reputation for gritty resistance on their home turf. “Cowichan is a good, hard-working team that plays old-fashioned hard-knocks rugby,” Benoit said. “I did some checking and when they play at home, the average game is decided by five to seven points but they don’t do as well on the road because they don’t seem to travel well. “They’re going to come out hard and I’m sure they’ve targeted this game thinking a win will help them reach the second round of the premier league.” Closer to home, the Beavers and the Brit Lions will kick off first division play against each other at Sullivan Heights field Saturday.

Usually the captains bring in a couple of speakers to inspire the team. It will be interesting to see who these two are inspired by. Don’t expect any fireworks with these two. The Orlando Golf Show is on this week and it won’t be long before we find out what is new for this year and next. Word is that most of the major manufacturers have major announcements in the areas of drivers. RBC, the sponsor of the Canadian Open, does a lot of business in the U.S. and by the announcements over the past year they are attempting to corner a huge portion of the golf market by signing up some well-known pros. Carrying RBC sponsorship are Jim Furyk, Ernie Els, Matt Kuchar along with Mike Weir, Stephen Ames, Fred Couples, Anthony Kim, Luke Donald and LPGA player Morgan Pressel. How can they lose? That’s like covering every number in roulette. Rumour has it there are more to come.
And finally – in case you have been missing Jim Thorpe on the Champions Tour — he’s back. Where’s he been? Jail. Back taxes and not paying them will do that to you in the States. His early release is contingent on paying back $2 million. Better he do that playing golf. 012511
IN THE NORTH SURREY AUTO MALL www.jptoyota-surrey.com
The work with Ames led to a stable of pros under Foley’s tutelage. PGA luminaries such as Hunter Mahan, Justin Rose and Sean O’Hair are all students. You don’t have to tell Foley that the world is watching, and if Tiger doesn’t return to form the pressure will be on to go back to his original coach, Butch Harmon. According to Foley, this is on the top of his bucket list professionally and he feels fortunate to be part of it.
Nice to see that Greenacres started a Twitter campaign to attempt to get Tiger to play at the Canadian Open at Shaughnessy.
WESTERN CANADA’S LARGEST TOYOTA DEALERSHIP

Foley’s career really started during a Canadian Open when he used the time to talk to many of the pros who were participating. That led to a teaching assignment at a junior event sponsored by Stephen Ames and that led to him taking on Ames as a fulltime client. Years from now when he writes his bio, especially if Tiger regains his form, he can give a great deal of the credit to Stephen Ames.
Two well-known pros who go about the business in a quiet, almost boring manner are the new captains of the next Ryder Cup Teams. Jose Marie Olazabal will lead Europe and Davis Love will lead the U.S.

Sean Foley the Canadian golf coach from Scarborough, Ont., is now firmly in Tiger’s camp. We won’t have to wait long to see if Tiger’s winter regime and training with Foley has paid off. Both Tiger and Phil Mickelson will make their PGA debut at the Farmers Insurance tournament at Torrey Pines this week. It’s a course that Tiger is quite comfortable at, having won there in 2008.

From here. To career.
“Executives are paying extra attention to application materials to avoid costly hiring mistakes -- something no company can afford,” said Robert Hosking, executive director of OfficeTeam. “To improve their chances of passing the initial screening process, job seekers should craft resumes that are accurate, clear and error-free.” OfficeTeam has some tips for catching a hiring manager’s attention and keeping it for those all-important seven minutes: • Be specific and concise about your achievements and highlight them up front. • Don’t send out generic resumes. Tailor the content to each individual job and company. As much as possible, repeat the words used in the job description -- many companies use software that scans for keywords. • Ask someone else to review your resume and summarize its key points. If they can’t pick out the most important information in two minutes or less, some editing is required. And make sure it is sent out without spelling and grammatical errors. THE SCRAPPER
Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
