❚SURREY/Putrid pile of fish waste dumped in middle of posh Fraser Heights neighbourhood
HOOK, LINE AND STINKER! Ted COLLEY Staff Reporter
SURREY – The stench rising from the steaming pile of fish waste is overpowering, the olfactory equivalent of a kick to the stomach. John Mayhew is disgusted. The pile was dumped just 60 metres from his Fraser Heights home near 154th Street and 110th Avenue, once an access route to the 152nd Street on-ramp to Highway 1. Now the access is closed and the last couple of hundred metres of 110th serve as a temporary stockpile of material for the Gateway project.
JOHN MAYHEW/ “We’re lucky the wind’s blowing the other way, otherwise...”
Sometime over the weekend, the road end also served as an illegal dumpsite. The smell at Mayhew’s front door is unpleasant, but not too bad. “We’re lucky the wind’s blowing the other way, otherwise...” he explains as he puts on his shoes. “It was dumped here the night before last (Saturday night), I believe,” as he walked Monday morning to the spot where the reeking pile sat. “There are trucks in and out of here all the time. Sometimes they work at night, so people wouldn’t necessarily notice.” The fish waste was dumped right up against the concrete barrier blocking off the road. It’s a good three or four
How bad does this big pile of rotting fish waste smell? Well, when ‘Now’ photographer Ted Colley asked John Mayhew to stand near metres long, three wide and a metre-and-a-half deep. The pile is full of crab shells and sea urchin remains suspended in an amorphous matrix of rotting tissue.
Reddish-brown liquid ran from the base across the road into a ditch. Asked to stand near the pile for a photo, Mayhew groaned. “Let’s get this done before you get photos of

me vomitting.” Mayhew thinks the mess was left by a trucking contractor intent on maximizing his profit by avoiding dump fees. “Let’s say he gets paid $3,000 to haul it away and
the dumping fee is $2,000. By doing this he puts $3,000 in his pocket, not $1,000.” The site is located on road allowance owned by the provincial highway ministry, so Mainroad
Lower Mainland Contracting, the road maintenance contractor, will carry out the clean up. Mainroad’s Al Rogers said the mess would be cleaned up Monday afternoon.

Jakob’s all smiles after surgery
As four-year-old recovers in Chicago, his thoughts turn to something a little more age-appropriate – a pyjama party
J
udging by his beaming smile, it’s Marisa BABIC hard to believe that four-year-old Staff Reporter Jakob Temple underwent a complicated 7.5-hour surgery to repair his faulty liver only a couple of days earlier. His mom, Jen Temple, is elated over her son’s rapid recovery. “He’s doing great,” she said in a telephone interview from her son’s bedside in a Chicago hospital. “We’ve still got a road ahead of us,” she added, “but the biggest hurdle was that he got through the surgery and he passed through the surgery with flying colours.” About a year ago, Jakob was diagnosed with a rare medical condition called portal vein thrombosis, which means he’s missing one of the main veins to his liver. The portal vein carries blood from key abdominal organs to the liver, which purifies the blood. To compensate, Jakob’s body performed the job through a network of smaller veins but as he grew older, the increasing pressure on them collapsed the veins, causing his liver and spleen to swell up. His mother lived in constant fear that a hard knock could rupture an organ and so Jakob was usually left on the sidelines, unable to play with his pals and schoolmates. As portal vein thrombosis is a rare condition, few surgeons are able to perform the complex procedure. The B.C. Ministry of Health agreed to pay for the surgery in an American hospital, and after months of waiting, Jakob had the surgery at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago on Jan. 24. Jen said waiting for the hours to tick away while her youngest was under the surgeon’s knife was almost unbearable. “It was the longest day and the most emotionally charged day in my life,” she said. The surgeon snipped a piece of Jakob’s jugular vein from the left side of his neck and inserted it into his liver to create the portal vein he was missing. “When everything heals, Jakob’s liver will be restored to a normal healthy one,” she said. Temple said her son is still in pain but making amazingly fast progress. “He was walking by himself today, like holding our hands because he’s still a little wobbly, but he’s walking. He’s so proud of himself,” Jen said Thursday. “It took a couple of days to get some smiles but we were finally able to get a smile from him, and that was nice.” Doctors are keeping a close eye on their young patient and he’s slowing being weaned off painkillers, although he’ll be taking blood thinners for some time to prevent blood clots.
“We’re still not out of the woods yet,” Jen said. If Jakob continues to make good progress, he’s expected to leave the hospital any day but he’ll have to remain in the city for another month where doctors will monitor him for complications. Last fall, family friends staged a fundraiser to help the Temples pay for accommodations in the Windy City while Jakob recovers. The event raised $17,000 and Temple once again expressed her deepest gratitude to everyone who made a donation. The money is paying for rent for
a small apartment near the hospital and other living expenses. To add to the family’s joy, the entire Temple family is set to celebrate Jakob’s fifth birthday on Friday. Jen’s 17-year-old daughter Justine and seven-yearold Jaidin will fly down to join their mother and father, Jerrod, for the festivities. “Jakob wants to have a pyjama party. He’s so excited. He misses his brother and sister so much,” Jen said. mbabic@thenownewspaper.com

$92K for children’s festival
Hospital drive reaches $15M
SURREY – Police are trying to determine if there’s any truth to rumours the driver of a car involved in a fatal pedestrian collision Thursday night was texting when the accident happened. The death occurred around 10:50 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 27 at 80th Avenue and 122A Street. Police say the driver was eastbound on 80th when she lost control of the car and hit a woman standing on the corner. The Toyota then collided with a telephone pole. Mother of two Harpreet Kaur Mann, 37, was walking home from work when she was hit and killed. – The Now
SURREY – Organizers of Surrey Children’s Festival will have an extra $92,000 to invest in the event over the next two years. The funding was announced Friday by those with the Canada Arts Presentation Fund and the Department of Canadian Heritage. “This outstanding festival has done a great job of developing audiences for the arts in the Surrey area,” said Nina Grewal, Minister of Canadian heritage and Official Languages and MP for Fleetwood-Port Kells. The 2011 edition of the City of Surrey-organized festival will happen May 26-28, featuring three days of kid-friendly music, theatre, dance and more at venues in Bear Creek Park. – The Now
SURREY – More than 10,600 donors have helped to make Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation’s largest fundraising effort a success. The Emergency Centre Campaign raised enough pledges to reach the foundation’s $15-million goal. “I can’t say enough about the community’s support,” says campaign chair Chris Midmore. “By the time all pledges have been fully paid, we may very well have surpassed our ambitious target.” The Emergency Centre Campaign is in support of a new emergency department and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), both of which are key elements of the Critical Care Tower project. – The Now

This project will see the bridge widened to accommodate a 4 metre shoulder bus lane on the east side of the structure. During construction there will be a speed limit reduction along this corridor to 60 kilometres per hour on the approaches and exits of this structure. In addition, there will be slight changes in the alignment of the highway in this area to allow for construction activities. Once implemented, the speed limit reduction is anticipated to be in effect 24 hours a day until project completion.

SURREY – The business world has been good to Sam Bhatnagar. He’s just 23 and a successful marketing director with World Financial Group, a U.S.-based financial services company. Bhatnagar and his family came to Canada from Kenya, where his parents owned a thriving business. “They didn’t have to move, they were doing well there,” Bhatnagar said. “They did it for their children.” He said Kenya is a wonderful country, but offered limited opportunity for him and his younger brother, so the family pulled up stakes and came here. Like many immigrants, their financial circumstances changed dramatically. Bhatnagar’s father, a business owner and university lecturer in Kenya, had to take a job in a call centre to earn a living and his mother went to work in a local produce market. Bhatnagar had to help with the family finances, too. He worked at a couple of jobs and took a general studies diploma at Kwantlen. Then he was introduced to World Financial Group. “We were very ambitious. I knew there was something for me out there. I just had to find it.

SURREY – A young Tom ZYTARUK Surrey girl testifying Staff Reporter against her alleged abuser Kyle Berkson in Surrey provincial court today described the “rape” in detail but admitted under cross examination that it’s possible “she might be wrong” that it was Berkson who assaulted her. Berkson, 36, is on trial, charged with breaking and entering with intent to commit sexual assault with a weapon, invitation to sexual touching, sexual interference and making threats. He’s accused of sneaking into the girl’s Guildford home in the dead of night and sexually assaulting her in her bedroom. There is a publication ban prohibiting the publication of any information that could identify the 10-year-old girl. She was nine when the crime is alleged to have happened. She told the court she was sleeping in bed, on her back, when she was woken by a man sitting on top of her. She said she could “kind of” see his face, and that he had hair like Elvis. “I think it was Kyle Berkson,” she testified. “It sounded like him and kind of looked like him.” She identified Berkson in the prisoner’s box. Crown prosecutor Annette Jung asked the girl if she knew what sex was, and she replied, “It’s a boy and a girl trying for a baby.” As he was leaving, she said, “he told me
to be quiet, stay there five minutes or he and his buddy would start shooting.” The girl testified that after four minutes had passed, she went to her grandma’s bedroom, which was next to hers, “and told her I got raped.” Her wrist was also bleeding. Her grandma testified in Surrey provincial court Wednesday that after the assault the girl “grew up instantly into an angry teenager.” The court heard Berkson had visited the home “many times” before. During cross-examination on Friday, defence lawyer David Gable asked the girl if it’s possible she’d had a nightmare, and the attack was imagined. She replied that wasn’t the case. Berkson listened from the prisoner’s dock, with his hair cropped close and wearing a red prisoner shirt, facing the girl as she testified. Gable questioned her about the identity of her alleged attacker. “The first thing I thought was Kyle Berkson,” she told the court. “I might be wrong but I’m pretty sure it was Kyle.” Gable asked how she knew about rape. “I saw on the news about people getting raped,” she replied. Asked where she’d heard the word “humping,” the girl replied, “I’m not sure... I just know words.” The trial continues. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

McNeil graduated from Seaquam Secondary in North Delta in 2008 and later attended classes at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey. Ontario-based publicist Susan McLennan worked for several years to help bring McNeil’s song and message to a wider audience. “Her whole mission was about bringing hope to parents and kids, and she really did that through her song and unbelievably positive attitude,” McLennan told the Now Monday. “She was really determined to bring attention to childhood cancer, specifically.” McNeil “defied the odds and lived several years longer than most doctors thought possible,” McLennan said. “It’s nice to know that she had a lovely evening out before she died, with family and friends,” McLennan added. “Her parents live in North Delta, and they’re such good people. It’s not easy for parents to see their child battle so publicly with a disease like that, but they really supported her.” A video for “The Will to Survive,” along with details about McNeil and her mission, is online at www.willtosurvive.org. Added her parents: “We are so grateful for the many (people) who have reached out to let us know how much her song meant to them. And we are so glad she was, and is, our daughter.” An event to celebrate McNeil’s life is in the planning stages, McLennan said. tzillich@thenownewspaper.com

DELTA – Megan Tom ZILLICH McNeil gave hope to Staff Reporter kids and parents dealing with cancer before an aggressive form of the disease finally claimed her life Friday. The North Deltan’s song, “The Will to Survive,” became a rallying cry for those stricken with cancer, leading to international media attention over the past couple of years. McNeil, 20, died Friday in the company of family and friends. “Our daughter was a hero,” her parents, Susanne and Dave McNeil, said in a statement issued Saturday. “She taught us the meaning of bravery and inspired us every MEGAN McNEIL day with her own will to survive. She wrote her song as a gift to anyone who needed to be picked up on a very bad day. And when you are a family fighting childhood cancer, there are a lot of very bad days.” “The Will to Survive,” recorded by noted music producer Garth Richardson, raised money for The James Fund and B.C. Childhood Cancer Parents Association. Donations are made to the organizations through downloads of the song via iTunes and amazon.com. When McNeil was 16, doctors detected a stage-four tumour in her abdomen after she suffered a sports-related injury.

CEOs not only ones who vote, Mr. Falcon For the most part, the candidates for the leadership of our two political parties like to boast they are all about Keith reaching out to BALDREY disaffected voters and widening their party’s base of support. In the B.C. Liberal camp, that seems to be a common theme among candidates such as Christy Clark, George Abbott and Mike de Jong. But one candidate in particular seems to be taking the opposite approach. Kevin Falcon, in his quest to win the B.C. Liberal leadership, appears interested primarily in demonstrating that he views the business community as pretty well the only constituency worth wooing. Almost every day, Falcon’s camp issues a news release boasting of the latest CEO or business leader endorsing his candidacy. This week, his campaign took out a full-page ad in The Vancouver Sun (at the very least, a sign that his campaign is well-funded) that listed more than 100 business owners or CEOs who support his candidacy. This was followed up by the announcement that David Emerson, the highly-respected former federal cabinet minister and forestry executive, was also backing Falcon. And I’m sure there will be plenty more such announcements in the weeks leading up to the Feb. 26 vote. While garnering such support is impressive and advantageous in a leadership race, it does raise some interesting questions that may arise if Falcon were to actually become premier. Given that supporting business interests seem to a top priority for him, would a Falcon-led government therefore give short shrift to other issues, such as the environ-

He also has the support of optometrists and transportation companies. Again, any changes to government policy that affect those operations will be framed against whatever contributions those companies gave to his campaign. There is also the issue of government contracts and grants. If any of them go to any of his business supporters, he may be inviting the kind of scrutiny that can dog his time in office. What is somewhat surprising about all this is that Falcon, of all the candidates, does not have to establish his credentials as a business-friendly politician. His reputation on that front is already well known. Instead, I would have thought Falcon would have wanted to soften and broaden his image to appeal to a wider base of voters. Of course, he may think that’s not necessary during the leadership campaign. And, to be fair, the membership of the B.C. Liberal party – who are the ones choosing the leader – are certainly pro-business in their outlook, so coming across as the most business-friendly candidate will not be a disadvantage in that community.
But whoever wins the leadership race will immediately have to govern for all British Columbians – not just party members. And the winner will eventually have to face the electorate in an election. If Falcon does indeed prove victorious on Feb. 26, he will soon discover that support from the business community can only take him so far. In a general election, the winner will need the support of a lot more people than simply CEOs. Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global BC Keith.Baldrey@globalnews.ca

ment, social services or aboriginal relations? It’s no secret that Falcon is fairly right-wing, although I think the time he’s spent at the cabinet table has modified some of his views over the years. But he seems to think that if the business community is happy (i.e. profitable), then everything else will work itself out. But of course, not everyone has that kind of faith in no-holdsbarred capitalism. We still have a welfare state, and environmental values rank high in this province. Simply embracing the business community as a top priority may not cut it with a lot of voters. Another potential problem for Falcon is that he has provided a lot of ammunition to critics who will examine the relationship between government and his supporters (you can be sure the NDP has clipped and saved that fullpage ad). For example, a number of pharmaceutical companies are backing his candidacy. If his government were to make any changes to drug policies that end up benefitting those companies, how long do you think it will take for the NDP to cry foul and allege a conflict-ofinterest?

Testing is a way of life The Editor, Re: “Principals in Surrey mum on FSA tests,” the Now, Jan. 21. I believe in testing students. As a parent, I would like to know how my children are doing in their studies compared
to the required curriculum. Testing is a way of life. I have not yet heard of a school that does not give exams. We are not very good in preparing our children for the harsh reality of life. These exams should be used to determine our children’s chances in being accepted to a reputable school in the future. They should be a follow-up of how they are doing in grades 4, 7 and 10. There should be a database to keep track of the children and if they are failing we should have a task force to investigate why and what can we do to help them.

then, the DAC has been on a downward spiral. A community’s passion and vibrancy can be determined by its commitment to the arts. The Liberal government does not understand that the DAC is not a luxury or a frill; it enriches our community, promotes social well-being, and strengthens our economies. British Columbia has the lowest per capita funding for the arts in all of Canada, and according to the Liberal government’s own report, for every $1 invested; there is a $1.36 return. Hopefully, the municipality and DAC will be able to find a way to provide a meaningful solution to keep the arts, vis-

The Editor, Re: “Arts council ‘not dead,’ just homeless in Delta,” the Now, Jan. 27. As a former director of the Delta Arts Council (DAC) and chair of the Delta Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission, I am deeply saddened and upset by the recent decision to place the Delta Arts Council and its volunteers out in the street. While the arts council and Delta are attempting to reconcile a new delivery of arts, let us not forget that the real termination notice was slapped on the DAC in late 2009, when the B.C. Liberal government slashed the DAC’s annual B.C. Lottery grant subsidy of $50,000. Since

A kiss for you, Montréal Proud cultural heartbeat of Quebec’s largest city makes Vancouver seem boring began at 9 a.m. — waaaaay before most Montréalers are up and about on a snowy Saturday. We drove in a toasty-warm car to and through the city’s most dynamic neighbourhoods, yet Roy and most others subscribe to what she calls a “BMW” way of getting around here — bicycle, Metro (subway) or walking. Most likely, it’s how these people stay fit and trim after ingesting all that wonderful (but fattening) smoked meat, poutine and cream cheese-coated bagels. I certainly want Roy on my Trivial Pursuit team, especially for a game based on all things Montréal — its history, architecture, arts and culture. Old Montreal is where the history is, naturally, where the awesome, heart-pounding beauty of Notre-Dame Basilica is enough to make me become religious — a must-see! Myriad ground-level galleries give nearby St. Paul Street artistic flair, but Roy says the real cultural heart of Montréal is the Plateau Mont-Royal district, home to a great number of artists of all kinds. For a real taste of Montréal, Roy says, buy

a ticket on the #55 bus and ride north on St. Laurent from the St. Laurence River waterfront, jumping off here and there to shop, dine and otherwise enjoy the adventure, ending in Little Italy five or six hours later. Ironically, in a city so devoted to great food at non-chain places, this unofficial #55 bus “tour” begins and ends near McDonald’s restaurants. We stayed at Hotel Opus Montréal, not far from the blocks-wide grounds of Quartier des Spectacles. The district plays host to a number of the city’s big events, including the massive Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, a yearly magnet for some 2.5 million people (June 25 to July 4, 2011, all details at montrealjazzfest.com). Not surprisingly, winter is also festival time in Montréal, where a riverfront event called Igloofest attracts tens of thousands of electronic music fans over three weekends in January. “People thought it was a crazy idea at first,” festival co-founder Nicolas Cournoyer told me, “but there is a solidarity

uch like the “boot” Tom ZILLICH of Italy and that Staff reporter semi-phallic thing they call Lake Michigan, the island city of Montréal takes shape as a set of big, pouty lips — which is perfect, because I’d like to give it a great big kiss. Montréal is magnificent for so many reasons, but its cultural heartbeat is what made me fall in love with the city on a recent trip there, my first ever. OK, the cranium-numbing cold of January doesn’t make it the best of months to visit, but really, Montréal is a year-round hot spot for head-spinning artistic creativity, community spirit and a kind of slow-motion way of life that puts emphasis on things that really matter. “In Montréal,” said Ruby Roy, a guide who works with the city’s tourism office, “our first religion is hockey, our second is eating, third is cycling, fourth is dancing and the fifth one I can’t talk about.” Chatty and energetic, Roy talked plenty about the city during a six-hour tour that

I also had to resign myself to my husband lovingly caring for me while being “Mr. Mom” to the kids and looking after the house. It was a foreign feeling to give up my daily routine and simply lie in bed (or sit up when I could muster it). I felt vulnerable, exposed and weak. What I discovered was my house did not explode, the kids were looked after and my company continued to run, with the help of others. Also, the “mommy friends” I have at my son’s school were wonderful. As I write this, I still have pneumonia and am just able to move around my house without getting winded. I know I am on the upswing and am looking forward to being healthy again. What I’ve learned about the word “help” is that it doesn’t denote weakness. In fact, asking for help can make a person stronger. It strengthens communities, it strengthens friendships and it strengthens families. I’m getting stronger because of the people who surround me. Who knew asking for help could be so empowering? Follow Kelley on Twitter: http:// twitter.com/empoweringmoms.

the way I was. I had to ask for help. I had to ask a friend to run an Enterprising Moms meeting (my company) for me that night, which was a “first” for me in four years. She agreed without hesitation and ran the meeting seamlessly. I thought the worst of it was over. However, when Saturday arrived, my body was completely fatigued. My husband, who was very concerned for me because he had never seen me so sick, took me to the hospital. Upon arrival at the emergency, I collapsed in the waiting room and was rushed to a bed. As it turned out, I had a bad case of pneumonia with the flu. I was ordered to strict bed rest for the next two to four weeks. In my mind, I was still thinking, “Yeah, right, by tomorrow I’ll be fine.” Only, I wasn’t. And so, I had to ask for more help. I had to ask my parents and my parents-in-law to babysit when my husband was working. I had to ask other parents to pick up my son, or host play dates.

H-E-L-P doesn’t have to be a four-letter word. In our household, “I can do it myself” is a phrase we regularly hear uttered by my five-year-old Kelley SCARSBROOK daughter. For the most part, I am proud she is so independent; however, at times it can be a bit infuriating. I always wondered why it’s so hard for her to ask for help — that is, until I needed help two weeks ago. It started on a Sunday night, when I developed a high fever and a dry cough. I shook it off as a 24-hour kind of thing, and went about my routine the next day. However, a couple of days later I discovered my dry cough was starting to rattle in my chest. Then came the migraines. I went to the doctor on Thursday morning and was advised to stay in bed. But as the “hard-headed” woman I am, it was a difficult pill to swallow. By the afternoon, though, I realized with horror that I just couldn’t keep going

A brief history of B.C.’s independent schools ❚ The first privately run school in British Columbia, open to the public, was founded in 1858. ❚ Prior to 1977, independent schools were unregulated and received no grants. From the early 1950s, schools were able to receive government-approved textbooks free of charge. ❚ From 1977 on access to partial funding was provided to qualifying schools only. ❚ From 1977 to 1989, schools that did not qualify for funding were unregulated. ❚ Since 1989, following the Report of the Sullivan Royal Commission on Education, an updated Independent School Act (ISA) requires the regulation of all independent schools, funded and non-funded. ❚ The Office of the Inspector of Independent Schools is responsible for the administration of the ISA, classification and funding of independent schools, home schooling, as well as certification of B.C. educational programs offered by authorities of offshore schools. ❚ The office functions as the regulatory agency of government. ❚ EARLYBIRD RV SHOW
Travels with Miranda - Full Time RVing with Rae Crothers Life for many people follows a similar path - go to school, get a job, buy a house and hope to retire while you’ve still got a few good years left to enjoy. Rae Crothers was one person who didn’t buy into this myth and at the age of 29 decided that life on the open road was the life for her. She took a leave of absence from her job and purchased a 31” long Glendale Royal Classic class “C” RV that she named Miranda. It didn’t take long for Rae to determine that this was a permanent decision. Within her first year of RVing she quit her job, went into business for herself and headed west. “I love this
life!” says Rae, “How else could I possibly see all of North America and still sleep in my own bed every night with my trusty feline co-pilots (Tabitha and Neelix) by my side?”
Now after several years, and kilometers, Crothers has become an expert on RVing, providing a wealth of information on everything from RV renos and repairs to finances and
laws governing RVers. She shares all of this along with her experiences living in RV parks throughout BC and the Yukon on her blog “Travels with Miranda”. More than 1000
people visit her site each week, adding their own anecdotes to her blog posts and sharing tips and information learned through their own experiences.
Recently Rae added the title of author to her long list of accomplishments with the release of “Full Time RVing in Canada”, an e-book she co-authored with Will Imanse. The book is a guide for RVers who are considering the full time lifestyle to help determine if it’s the right choice and when to do it. You can learn more about the book and Rae’s adventures on the road at the “This Old RV” Seminar Stage during the Earlybird RV Show and Sale. See page 19 for complete seminar schedule.

Go Canada! RV Enthusiasts Pick Their Favourite Destinations There’s no shortage of incredible outdoor destinations throughout Canada. Each province and territory has its own natural beauty to discover from the coastal beaches on Vancouver Island, through the Canadian Rockies and Prairies all the way to the stunning Atlantic coast. Go RVing Canada put the vote to Canadians to determine the Top 11 RV Spots in Canada and commemorate each province’s top RV destination. The winning regions were selected by hundreds of submissions received from Canadian travelers through Go RVing Canada’s Top 100 Spots to RV in Canada Centennial Contest. Western Canada’s top destinations included Kluane Lake in the Yukon, Alberta’s Banff National Park, and Pacific Rim National Park on Vancouver Island. Kluane National Park and Reserve is a land of precipitous mountains, immense icefields and lush valleys that provides a host of outdoor activities. The Park is also home to Mount Logan (5959 m/19,545 ft), Canada’s highest peak. Half a day’s drive from Vancouver, Banff National Park is Canada’s first national park and the world’s third. Spanning 6,641 square kilometres (2,564 square miles) of valleys, mountains, glaciers, forests, meadows and rivers, Banff National Park is one of the world’s premier destination spots.

Preparing Your RV For The Spring As you begin to make vacation plans this summer it will be important to ensure that your RV is in top shape before embarking on your exciting RV adventures. Below are some suggested guidelines to ensure your RV will be ready to roll when the summer season arrives: Begin with a thorough exterior inspection. Examine the outside, including the body and roof, for any cracks or separation and look inside for stains on the ceiling- sure signs of roof leaks. Look beneath the coach and/or or tow vehicle for signs of fuel or other fluid leaks.
In the kitchen, clean fronts of cabinets, appliances, window sill tracks, the outside of the trash can, chair arms and legs, the vent hood and counters.
Check the air pressure in all tires for proper inflation.
In the living area, vacuum any furniture with fabric. Use a damp microfibre cloth on leather furniture. If the cloth leaves moisture, wipe dry with another microfibre cloth.
Clean the tail lights, turn signals, headlights, marker lights on the sides, side-view mirrors, and windshield.
Test your RV’s gas stove, hot water heater and furnace. Be sure that your propane tank is filled to the proper amount.
Check all lighting systems inside and out (turn signals and brake, four-way, backup, and running lights) to be sure they work properly.
Test the refrigerator, air conditioner and auxiliary generator to be sure they run properly.
Give the interior its best cleaning. An RV that’s been stored all winter needs to be aired out. Vacuum the carpet and clean the floors and other surfaces as needed. Begin in the room at the rear of the RV, clean around that room, and work forward. In each area, collect trash, clean glass and mirrors, and dust. Read and understand the directions for proper use of the fire extinguisher
Drain and flush the freshwater tank. Add 1/4 cup of household bleach for each 15 gallons of capacity. Then fill the tank almost to capacity, leaving room for sloshing. Drive or tow the coach to mix the bleach. Run the hot water to get the bleach through the water heater. Then drain the freshwater tank. Refill, along with 1/4 of baking soda per 15 gallons. Drive or tow to mix the water, run the hot water, then drain and refill with fresh water.
Pack a basic tool kit, including flat wrenches of assorted sizes, flat and Phillips head screwdrivers, a socket set, pliers, a spark plug socket wrench, good-quality jumper cables, a flashlight with spare batteries, and an inexpensive electric test light or voltmeter to diagnose electrical difficulties. Be prepared on the road with a few critical items, such as drive belts for engine accessories, fuel, electrical wire and crimp-on terminals, 12-volt fuses for both coach and chassis systems, duct tape and electrical tape, a hydraulic jack with the capacity to lift your rig, clean rags, flares, and reflective warning signs. By following these simple steps you’ll ensure a safe and memorable summer vacation. Three Key Travel Tips for a Successful RV Vacation The lure of the open road, the promise of quality family time and the call of Mother Nature are some of the main reasons people are drawn to RV’ing. Right now there is no better time to buy that RV and hit the open road. You won’t find a more cost efficient holiday than packing the family into the RV for a cross-country exploration or spur-of-the-moment weekend jaunt. We recommend the following top three tips for making your RV vacation an enjoyable one:
1) Map Your RV Travel Destinations — The
freedom of the open road is a large part of the RV lifestyle — the ability to go wherever you want, whenever you want. While exploring that freedom it’s always a good idea to have a solid travel plan in place. If you know where you’re heading, you can determine the route that will offer the most interesting sights. If you’re not sure where to go check out RV books and travel guides, contact tourism boards in states or provinces you’ll be passing through, and search the
• Cell phone and charger • Important contact information, including family members, doctors, insurance agents, etc.
Internet. Make sure to bring the correct road maps. A GPS system is also a good idea, especially if you’re new to RV travel.
It’s always a good idea to leave a copy of your itinerary and contact information with a family member or friend, in case you need to be located in an emergency.
2) Your Traveling First-Aid Kit Whether it’s a medical emergency or patching up a scrape or cut, a “must have” tool for any level of RV traveler is a fully stocked RV first-aid kit. Your RV first-aid kit should include the following basic medical supplies: • • • • • •
3) RV Camping with Kids and Pets — If your
Bandages Ointment Over-the-counter pain reliever Insect repellant Scissors An emergency supply of must-have medications
Plus the following extras for your RV: • Flashlight and extra batteries • Paper and pens • A camera in case you have to take photos of an accident site.
*2 for 1 Every Evening after 9:30 (with purchase of 2 beverages)
RV travel includes children, you’ll want to set aside time for outdoor activities, as even the roomiest RV can be confining for kids. Give each child his or her own space in the RV (no matter how small) for toys, games and personal stuff. If you plan to bring the family pet, check beforehand to confirm that pets are allowed at the RV campground.
What is for sure – there’s never been a better time to take up the RV life. Whether you’re a weekend traveler, or full-time RV’er, there is a vast wilderness landscape out there waiting to be explored and appreciated.

Later, we drove close to Roy’s home in the Little Italy district for a late-afternoon look at the fabulously chaotic JeanTalon farmer’s market, which makes Granville Island look like a corner store. The following after-
noon, as my wife enjoyed a nap back at the hotel, I strolled kitty-corner to the Factory sports bar, at the corner of St. Laurent and Sherbrooke. It was quiet in there, maybe three or four guys watching NFL playoff action on TV. One of them, seated at the end of
the bar having dinner, welcomed some friends and soon headed for the door with them. Before exiting, he stopped, bent down and held something in his hand. “Excuse me, sir, is this your cellphone?” he asked me as I looked in his direction. Why yes, it was. The man looked familiar to me and, several minutes after he left the bar, his identity was confirmed by the waitress; it was P.K. Subban, a rising-star defenceman with Montréal Canadiens and two-time gold-medal winner with Team Canada at the World Junior Championships. Thanks, P.K. For finding my phone, I could kiss you, too, along with the wonderful city you call home during hockey season. tzillich@ thenownewspaper.com

See the Canadiens play
I’m a diehard Canucks fan who loathes the Habs (sorry, Mr. Booth), but it was still a thrill to be at Bell Centre for a hockey game — especially an “Original Six” meeting of Montréal and Boston Bruins. The arena is LOUD, the vibe electric. Get friendly with a scalper. Don’t bother visiting the old Forum building, little more than a shopping mall with Pepsi sponsorship.

This shot attempt by Merritt’s Blaine Bokenfohr (14) didn’t stand much of a chance against Surrey goalie Karel St-Laurent Friday as ❚PHOTO/submitted by Garrett James the Eagles’ netminder stopped all 25 Centennials’ shots en route to a 4-0 shutout win.

Fast, fit Eagles add three more wins
The highMichael BOOTH flying Surrey Sports Editor Eagles solidified their grip on second place in the B.C. Hockey League’s Coastal Conference with three more wins last weekend. The Birds took both ends of a home-and-home set with the Merritt Centennials - 4-0 at South Surrey Arena Friday and 7-2 in Merritt Saturday - before wrapping up the weekend with an impressive 5-1 romp over the Cowichan Valley Capitals in South Surrey Saturday. Surrey has now won five games in a row and enjoys a five-point lead over Langley in the race for second place with four games in hand. “We have to win all our games now,” said Eagles forward and BCHL scoring leader Brad McGowan. “We can’t even let the games go into overtime because we don’t want to give points away to anybody.” Defenceman Mitch Jones added, “Maybe 15 or 20 games back we really set our mind on finishing second and now we’re getting closer and closer. We’ve put ourselves in
a position where we control our own destiny and it’s up to us to win the games if we want to end up in second.” The Eagles’ run of January success flies in the face of the team’s second half record in the past several seasons. Surrey had developed a reputation for teams that started the season well but faded in the second half of the season. “I think the guys are all in a little better shape this year,” McGowan said. “We’ve been working out a lot more and going to spin classes and now we’re not getting tired in these (three games in three nights). You can see how all that work has helped us and lately it seems like we’re the better team late in the game.” Helping out the cause is outstanding play by the Eagles’ defence and goaltending. In the last eight games, Surrey has allowed a total of nine goals with two shutouts while posting a record of seven wins and one loss. “We’ve taken a lot of pride in that lately,” Jones said of the team’s strong defensive play. “As a group we’ve really stepped

it up in he last couple of weeks. At the beginning of the year we knew we had some skill back there but as a group we’ve taken it upon ourselves to play strong defensively. Also Karel (St-Laurent) and Andrew (Hunt) have done a great job in goal for us; we have a really good goaltending tandem to help us out back there.” The Eagles’ improved fitness and defensive proficiency was on display Sunday when the Birds rocked Cowichan 5-1. Despite playing their third game in as many nights, Surrey showed considerable jump while outshooting the Capitals 5030 and keeping the visiting shooters safely to the outside all evening. Daniel Gentzler led the Eagles with three goals while McGowan chipped in with three helpers. Jeff Vanderlugt and Brandon Morley scored the other Surrey goals. Surrey began the weekend with the home-and-home series with the Centennials. St-Laurent turned aside 25 Merritt shots to post the shutout on home ice Friday night while Vanderlugt scored once and set up two others. Beau Orser Linden Saip and Robert Lindores
also scored for Surrey. The two teams headed up the Coquihalla Saturday for a rematch that turned out to be more of the same. Surrey scored four goals in the first period and added three more in the second before Merritt struck for two meaningless tallies in the final 22 minutes. Steve Koshey led all Surrey point getters with three assists while fellow blueliner Jones scored twice. McGowan, Morley, Orser, Vanderlugt also Gentzler scored goals for Surrey. “We really took care of them in both games,” McGowan said. “In the first game we outshot them by a lot and their goalie played pretty good but eventually the pucks started to go in. In Merritt we played a great game and we were all over them right off the hop.” Surrey has a short week before embarking on another threegames-in-three-nights beginning Wednesday with the E xpress in Coquitlam. Surrey hosts leagueleading Powell River Kings Thursday before welcoming the Victoria Grizzlies to town Friday. Game time each night is 7 p.m.

Cancer treatments left her deaf in one ear and with such acute TESSA BEAUCHAMP double vision she needed to wear an eye patch just to play. Beauchamp was still wearing the eye patch when she was cut from the U-17 team last summer but her vision has since improved to the point where it is no longer necessary. This year Beauchamp and the rest of the Crusaders are ranked second in the province and recently won the Surrey Firefighters Goodwill Classic and the B.C. Catholic championships. Beauchamp was named the MVP of the Firefighters tourney. The provincial body announced the honour last week and Beauchamp will pick up the prize in person at the 45th Annual Sport BC Athlete of the Year Awards in Richmond on Feb. 24.

Holy Cross basMichael BOOTH ketball player Tessa Sports Editor Beauchamp’s inspirational battle with cancer has been recognized by Sport B.C. in the form of the Harry Jerome Comeback Award for 2010. Past winners of the award include Emily Brydon (2003, alpine skiing), Silken Laumann (1992, rowing) and Harry Jerome (athletics). “I had no clue about the award so it was a big surprise,” Beauchamp said. “When my mom explained what the award was for I couldn’t believe that I had won it. How did that happen? It’s crazy - for them to think of me as being even close to the people who have won it before is just crazy. People like Harry Jerome and all those amazing athletes are just incredible.” She then added, “It’s nice to have good news happening instead of all the bad news of the past year.” The Harry Jerome award recognizes a B.C. amateur athlete who demonstrated great perseverance in the face of adversity. Beauchamp, 17, certainly fits that description having overcome severe burns as a toddler and then a cancerous brain tumour as a teenager. One of the top basketball players in

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
