BOAT SHOW: Special section starts on page 19 ❚SURREY/Old SET slate is reunited – and it feels so good

HUNT HANGS WITH ‘FRIENDS’ AGAIN SURREY – And Ted COLLEY then there was one. Staff Reporter Coun. Bob Bose is the lone holdout on Surrey city council as colleague Marvin Hunt confirmed Monday he has joined Mayor Dianne Watts’ Surrey First civic slate. Surrey First now has eight of nine council seats with Bose holding the sole remaining spot for the left-wing Surrey Civic Coalition. Hunt agreed he’s moved a long way from 2005 when Watts was first elected mayor and he was a senior member of the Surrey Electors Team slate that dominated council then. “It’s absolutely true, a long way. I think it was just watching council work-

MARVIN HUNT

DIANNE WATTS

ing together to get things accomplished without acrimony. It’s all been very good for the city and its residents.” Most members of Surrey First once belonged to SET, including Watts her-

self, and Hunt said that played a part in his decision to move. “You reach a point where you say, ‘Why am I not with my friends?’ I helped most of those people get elected.” Beset by internal strife and Watts’ landslide 2005 victory over its mayoral candidate, incumbent Doug McCallum, SET eventually bowed out of Surrey civic politics after several of its elected councillors defected to Surrey First in 2007. That left Hunt, a councillor since 1987 and a SET member since 1990, with no slate to back him. He was reelected as an independent in 2008. Hunt expects the upcoming campaign

in November will be a somewhat easier road now that he’s part of a machine once again. “Will it be less stressful? I have a sneaking suspicion it will be so,” Hunt said. There has been similar activity over on school board, a newly minted slate called Surrey First Education now holds all but two seats. Two SCC trustees, Terry Allen and Laurie Larsen, defected to SFE last month, joining with former SET trustees in the new slate modelled after Surrey First. One of the remaining places belongs to board chair Laurae McNally and the other to the SCC’s Ijaz Chatha. tcolley@thenownewspaper.com

❚ NEWS ❚IN COURT/Ron Bencze charged with molestation of child

TV reporter will make plea on Feb. 28 over sex charges

SURREY – A lot of Tom ZYTARUK reporters were there. Staff Reporter But Ron Bencze wasn’t among them. The Global TV journalist was expected to appear in Surrey provincial court on Monday, on charges he sexually molested a child under 16 years old. The 44-year-old Surrey resident is charged with one count of sexual assault, two counts of sexual interference and two counts of invitation to sexual

touching. He was released on bail on Jan. 18, one day after his arrest. According to his conditions of release, police say, he is not to contact his alleged victim or “any other young persons.” The alleged victim’s name, gender and other identifying information are shielded by a publication ban. Bencze didn’t appear in court Monday, nor did his lawyer Richard Peck, who sent a representative from his law firm in

his stead to set an arraignment hearing for Feb. 28. It’s during arraignment hearings that the court learns whether the accused intends to plead guilty or not guilty. It is not yet known how Bencze will plead, but Global TV news director Ian Haysom said a few weeks ago that the reporter indicated he will “vigorously” defend himself against the charges. Bencze has in the meantime been suspended from his job, with pay.

After Monday’s brief hearing, Crown prosecutor Jennifer Lopes said the police investigation is still active. “They’re interviewing a lot of children he may have had contact with in past years,” she told the Now. Bencze has been a television reporter with Global BC since 2004 and before that worked as a crime reporter with radio News 1130. He is married and has three children. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

❚POLITICS/Local MPs weigh in on provincial leadership races

❚EDUCATION

WHO ARE THEY BACKING?

Report card is out – and is dismissed Ted COLLEY Staff Reporter

FALCON

CADIEUX

HAYER

SURREY – All Tom but two of our nine ZYTARUK local Members of the Staff Reporter Legislative Assembly have decided whom they are supporting for leader of their respective parties, when they are chosen over the next few months. One standout pattern is that both sides appear to like NDP leadership candidate Adrian Dix, but for opposite reasons. The New Democrats and Liberals are both electing new leaders after Premier Gordon Campbell resigned last November over a lack of personal support in opinion polls, and Carole James resigned a month after that as a result of infighting in the NDP caucus. The Liberals will elect a new leader on Feb. 26 and the NDP will chose their new leader on April 17. Running for leader of the B.C. Liberals are MLAs George Abbott (Shuswap), Mike de Jong (Abbotsford West), Kevin Falcon (Surrey-Cloverdale), Moira Stilwell (Vancouver-Langara), former Liberal MLA and broadcaster Christy Clark, and Parksville Mayor Ed Mayne. Among those running for the leadership of the NDP are MLAs Harry Lali (Fraser-Nicola), Mike Farnsworth (Port Coquitlam), Adrian Dix (VancouverKingsway), John Horgan (Juan de Fuca), Nicholas Simons (Powell River and Sunshine Coast) and pot activist Dana Larsen. Falcon couldn’t be reached for comment, but who he’s supporting, of course, is a foregone conclusion. Also supporting Falcon’s bid for Liberal leadership is

HOGG

RALSTON

Surrey-Panorama MLA Stephanie Cadieux and Surrey-Tynehead MLA Dave Hayer. “He’s proven himself as a leader of our time,” Cadieux offered. “He has a good understanding of what it’s going to take to lead the next generation.” Referring to Falcon as “our own and local boy,” Hayer said he considers Falcon to have been one of the best provincial ministers of transportation in B.C.’s history. Meanwhile, Surrey-White Rock MLA Gordon Hogg is firmly in his “good friend” George Abbott’s camp. Hogg has known Abbott from “way back” and emceed his announcement he’d be running for Liberal leader. “I believe that he provides us with a good opportunity to win the next election,” Hogg said. He noted that NDP spokesman David Schreck has said “the person they feared the most” is George Abbott, among the candidates in the Liberal race. Asked which NDP leader they’d like to see their party square off against in the next general election, Hogg picked Dix, as he’s embroiled in internal party squabbles. Farnworth and Lali complained after Dix’s campaign did a masssigning of new members, followed by a stack of cash. They raised questions if the membership fees were paid by the new members, or the Dix campaign itself. NDP party officials have since ruled the memberships valid. “If they had Adrian Dix, that would work well for us,” Hogg said. For Hayer, it would either be

BAINS

HAMMELL

Dix or Lali. “They’re so far out in wonderland,” he said, adding he doesn’t think anybody in B.C. would vote for either of them. Cadieux declined to play. “I’m not going to pick a favourite there,” she said. “Beyond our leadership race, I’m not paying attention.” Bruce Ralston, NDP MLA for Surrey-Whalley, is a Dix supporter. As for what Liberal leader he’d rather square off against, he said any candidate will do. “They’re all implicated in the Gordon Campbell regime,” he charged, having presiding over the highest rate of child poverty and the lowest rate of economic growth in over a decade. Point in fact, Mayne did not serve in Campbell’s government. Harry Bains, NDP MLA for Surrey-Newton, is also a Dix fan, saying he represents a “balanced” approach between the interests of business and labour. “He’s one of the sharpest political minds I have come across,” he said. As for the Liberal race, he says, “none of them have any credibility with me. They sat around the same cabinet table as Gordon Campbell.” Surrey-Green Timbers MLA Sue Hammell is also supporting Dix. “His commitment to a work ethic is just phenomenal. I think he’ll make an outstanding leader.” For the Liberals, she’d pick Stilwell for her party to run against, or de Jong. “Kevin Falcon would be an opponent he (Dix) would absolutely defeat,” she offered. Jagrup Brar, NDP MLA for Surrey-Fleetwood, said he’s still consulting with his constituents as

BRAR

GENTNER

to who they think would make the best NDP leader. On the Liberal race, he said, “it doesn’t matter – they’re all the same. They all broke their promise not to sell B.C. Rail.” “I don’t think it matters who wins that race,” he said. “It’s about the B.C. Liberal party, and what they’ve done over the last 10 years.” Guy Gentner, the NDP MLA for Delta North, refused to comment on the Liberal race but waxed poetic on his own political party’s contest. “Change is in the wind and sometimes, as Churchill once said, ‘Kites fly highest against the wind, not with it.’ I will be looking for a new approach and vision. With a one member, one vote leadership convention, each New Democrat has the franchise to decide what direction B.C. should go,” Gentner said. “I will give all the candidates the opportunity to depict their visions for change before exercising my franchise. “Much is at stake. Keeping an open mind with which direction is offered, tempered with the need of unity within the party and all sectors of the province will ultimately sway my support. I’m looking forward to the discourse that embraces a new beginning.” Gentner will be among those listening to the NDP candidates’ pitch Saturday afternoon, at 2 p.m., when five of the six leadership candidates will attend a leadership Q&A at the Gecko Grill in North Delta, hosted by the Delta North NDP Constituency Association. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

SURREY – The Fraser Institute has released its controversial report card on schools for the 2009/2010 year and once again it’s being dismissed as irrelevant by educators and administrators alike. “Is it out again?” asked Surrey school board chair Laurae McNally Monday. “I just don’t pay that much attention to it.” The report uses results in the province’s Foundation Skills Assessment testing of reading, writing and math skills to rate school performance. The Fraser Institute promotes its reports as tools that help parents decide which school is right for their children. See HOW WE FARED, thenownewspaper.com Private schools invariably top the charts and this year is no exception. In fact, the elementary school in Bountiful, the polygamist community in eastern B.C., scored a perfect 10 on the report card this year. McNally said the data used to generate the Fraser Institute reports are too limited to give a realistic picture of a given school. “It’s a snapshot of one day in the life of a school. Every school is different. They may have a lot of ESL kids or they might be in a neighbourhood that is a bit needy. I say to parents, get involved. “Go into the school, visit with the principal, talk to the teachers, talk to people in the neighbourhood. That’s how you find out about a school.”

Convicted murderer Panghali a ‘sick, twisted and evil monster’ SURREY – Had he Tom ZYTARUK not cheaped out by using Staff Reporter his wife’s cellphone after killing her, or snuck out in the dead of night to a local store and then lied about it later, Cloverdale resident Mukhtiar Singh Panghali might have got away with murder. But for those two mistakes, the former Surrey school teacher is now waiting until March 17 to find out when he’ll be eligible for parole, after being found guilty Friday of murdering his wife Manjit Panghali and burning her body to conceal his crime. Justice Heather Holmes found Panghali, 38, guilty of second-degree murder and interfering with a dead body, in the

Oct. 18, 2006 strangulation of Manjit Panghali, 31. His trial was heard in B.C. Supreme Court, in New Westminster, over November and December. Panghali did not display much emotion as Holmes announced the verdict, after delivering a synopsis of her 57-page judgment. See PHOTOS, thenownewspaper.com But relatives of the victim erupted in tears, exclaiming, “It’s over!” Manjit’s eldest sister, Jasmine Bhambra, was not surprised by her former brotherin-law’s seemingly calm response to the verdict.

“He’s always been emotionless,” she told reporters outside the courthouse. “He just doesn’t care.” Bhambra said her family’s relieved that this part of their four-year nightmare is over, but added their suffering is nothing compared to the “pain and horror” her sister endured as she was being killed by her husband, who Bhambra described as a “sick, twisted and evil monster.” Manjit Panghali was a part-time teacher at North Ridge Elementary school while her husband taught physics at Princess Margaret Secondary school, also in Surrey. She was four months pregnant when she died, and the couple’s daughter Maya was three years old.

Conviction ‘long time coming’ DELTA – The Delta police weighed in on the Mukhtiar Singh Panghali murder conviction Friday, hoping it might bring some solace to the victim’s heartbroken family. Outside the courthouse Friday, Delta Police Chief Jim Cessford said the murder conviction “has been a long time coming, and today were are witness to an appropriate outcome. It is my hope that the outcome today will give some solace and closure knowing the person responsible has been held accountable for his incomprehensible actions.”

Surrey student earns award for high-tech answer to Alzheimer’s

SURREY – A Surrey Marisa BABIC Staff Reporter high school student has designed a novel device aimed at helping people in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia to lead independent lives. Sarah Gordon, a student at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary school, has won a $2,000 scholarship from the British Columbia Innovation Council for her winning theoretical design. Gordon, 17, says she’s pleased she won the award. “I was honestly very surprised because my idea was so different in comparison to other applicants at the school,” she said. When her teacher told her she came

up with the best project at the Cloverdale school, she says ran her idea past a director at the B.C. Alzheimer’s Society. The director agreed that it was promising and offered suggestions for a few tweaks. Gordon, a volunteer at Zion Manor seniors centre, said he got her inspiration for the device after seeing the frustration some of the facility’s residents face. Gordon’s gadget combines a Bluetooth device with a 360-degree camera and a computer with a scanner able to read barcodes up to a distance of 10 metres. According to her slick Power-Point presentation, the client wears a Bluetooth that has a directional scanner attached to it. At a verbal prompt, a scan is made of a

bar code located on an object in front of the person. The Bluetooth technology is then used to transfer the data to a computer, which would in turn relay information. A level one response would name the object, for example, “plate cupboard.” “A further verbal request for additional information might describe the objects or give a definition of their use.” The device could also be programmed to warn the wearer of potential danger, such as a hot stove. “While it would only be of use to patients in the earlier stages of dementia and Alzheimer’s, I feel like it would be worthwhile for the people to be able to

live independently for as long as possible,” she said. “The design of this project is theoretical and may seem far-fetched, but realistically, all of the technology has been created and is being developed for other uses. All it would take to make this device a possibility is for someone to take the time to apply the already existing technology and combine them to create a new device.” Gordon, who plans to major in biology at university, noted competitions such as the one hosted by the British Columbia Innovation Council encourage students to “think outside of the box making science come to life.” mbabic@thenownewspaper.com

They’ll be digging deep in Delta to heat some schools in the district. Pipes for geothermal systems will be buried under playing fields at 11 schools as part of a $6.9-million, 35-project deal involving Terasen Gas and B.C.’s Public Sector Energy Conservation Agreement fund. Delta school district has been pushing to make the projects happen in order to reduce energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. “This means we can use more money for education and other important things,” said Dale Saip, school board chair. In a so-called geo-exchange system, water is pumped through buried pipes to heat or cool a building, depending on the season.

A media event was held Monday at Pinewood Elementary, one of four schools in North Delta to have a geoexchange system installed sometime over the next two years. The other schools are Delview Secondary, North Delta Secondary and Richardson Elementary, along with six schools in South Delta and the board office. Other schools will have high-efficiency boiler upgrades done, including Annieville, Chalmers and Health elementaries. In Surrey, solar air-heating projects are planned at four secondary schools, including Queen Elizabeth, Semiahmoo, Fleetwood Park and Elgin Park. — Tom Zillich

Sabres rattle over anti-gang funding

Sandhu said. Cadman agrees: “I have heard great reports from this project and would hate to see it end.” In response, the NDP candidate slammed the Tory government for spending billions of dollars on new prisons but putting an end to funding that’s designed to help youths stay out of gangs. “They’re speaking out of both sides of their mouth,” Sandhu charged. But that’s not so, Cadman counters. “This is an NDP ploy which candidates/MPs are bringing up to rattle sabres,” the MP charged. Sandhu shot back. “When is Dona Cadman going to start speaking up for North Surrey?” tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

SURREY – The federal Tom NDP candidate for Surrey ZYTARUK Staff Reporter North is calling on Tory MP Dona Cadman to fight to save a Surrey youth gang prevention program that will run out of funding by the end of March. The Youth Gang Prevention Fund is a transfer payment program through which the Surrey school district has received $888,000 to help prevent school children from joining criminal youth gangs. Jasbir Sandhu, who’ll be running against Cadman next election under the NDP banner, called on the MP to ensure the funding doesn’t lapse. “Eliminating funding to these youth gang prevention programs would be a huge mistake in the fight against crime,”

Crews ‘digging at’ cause of fire SURREY – Surrey fire investigators are still trying to determine what started that huge fire at Bridgeview’s Mackenzie Sawmill on Jan. 25. The fire, in the 11700-block of 130th Street, put some 120 employees out of work. This was the second time the mill caught fire in the past few months. Sparks from a welder’s torch started a fire in a chip truck full of sawdust on Nov. 12, shutting down the mill.

HST anger dissipates but bridge talk heats up To almost no one’s surprise, the attempt to recall B.C. Liberal MLA Ida Chong ended in complete failure. But Keith will that defeat BALDREY discourage other recall efforts from even beginning? The massive defeat of recall proponents in Chong’s riding of Oak Bay-Gordon Head gives no cause for hope for those trying to launch recall campaigns against two other B.C. Liberal MLAs – Don McRae from Comox Valley and Terry Lake from KamloopsNorth Thompson. It’s not as though the attempt to recall Chong failed by a squeaker. It wasn’t even close. More than 15,000 people needed to sign the recall petition for it to succeed and, instead, fewer than 9,000 people signed. In fact, it appears the recall effort stalled with a few weeks to go to gather signatures. The campaign’s own figures indicate fewer than 1,000 people signed the petition in the last few weeks, suggesting that rather than gaining steam, the petition experienced the precise opposite. Faced with rejection by the voters, the recall proponents and the Fight HST crowd have opted to cling to delusional fantasies. They’ve been trying to pass off their failure as some sort of spectacular success. They offer the lame argument that without the recall campaign, the HST issue would have been ignored by the public. This is patently absurd, of course: the fact there is an upcoming referendum on the HST guarantees it will remain front and centre with the electorate. In fact, the recall campaign itself attracted scant media interest anyway. If the public was engaged with the HST issue these past few weeks, it wasn’t because of the recall efforts in Oak Bay-Gordon

❚POLITICS

CEO David Hahn that another big round of fare hikes looms has brought back talk of an issue that never seems to disappear: building a bridge between the Mainland and Vancouver Island. To which I say: put a sock in it. There is not going to be a bridge built, period. Not now, not ever – no matter how much ferry fares continue to climb. The reasons are numerous. First and foremost is the ridiculous expense, with one government estimate pegged at a staggering $12 billion (which would include a one-way toll of $260 to $800; ferry fares may be expensive, but they are a long way from approaching a return fare of more than $500 to $1,600). Why is the cost estimate so high? Well, the main problem is the extremely deep waters of the Strait of Georgia, which is much deeper than almost anywhere else in the world a bridge is located. That $12-billion cost, by the way, is equivalent to 60 years’ worth of the current level of tax subsidies currently received by BC Ferries. All proposals for such a bridge suggest it would span the shortest distance – somewhere around Nanaimo, to Delta, with poten-

tial of connecting to some Gulf Islands. This means the main population hub on the Island – the capital region – would not be serviced unless people were willing to travel the 90 minutes over the often-dangerous Malahat Pass. Finally, the problem with B.C. Ferries is not getting people back and forth between Nanaimo and Vancouver – that route actually makes money. Rather, it is the dozens of small, island runs that lose money every time they leave shore that are the problems. No $12-billion bridge is going to fix those. Head. And the recall organizers have offered up all kinds of excuses for why they did so poorly. It rained too much during the recall campaign. There were too many apartment buildings they couldn’t gain access to. The Christmas holidays got in the way. There were too many civil servants living in the riding. And too many people had moved out of the riding. But after brushing aside all these whiny complaints, a central truth emerged: there simply wasn’t anywhere near the kind of anger among the citizens of Oak Bay that is required to recall their MLA. Yes, there is still likely considerable opposition to the HST. But the emotional, visceral anger attached to that tax appears to be ebbing. The reason for that apparently diminished anger appears to be an obvious one: Gordon Campbell will soon be gone as premier. The moment he said he was leaving office was when widespread dissatisfaction with his government started to lessen. And that was also the moment any recall campaign became dead in the water. ••• The bolt-from-the-blue announcement by BC Ferries

Bad memories of Hunt The Editor, Re: “Hunt joins Watts’ Surrey First team,” the Now, Feb. 4. Marvin Hunt? I remember when he was a sidekick of George Puil on the Greater Vancouver Regional District when we experienced a lost cause that we thought that we had won concerning contracting our water system to some multinational contractors. We thought that we won, but we found out later that we actually lost as the GVRD let the contract out as they intended and the media said nothing. Now we have to pay for a court case with the contractor concerning breach of contract. And to think that we almost moved to Surrey.

Hank Pierce, Vancouver

The Editor, Re: “Poor judgment and worse manners behind wheel,” the Now, Feb 4. I read Ted Colley’s column and I could not agree with him more. I will tell you of an incident that I witnessed many years ago. I actually saw an ambulance attendant (the passenger) get out of his ambulance and grab a woman out of her car and drive it out of the way because she refused to move. The driver of the ambulance sat behind her for at least one minute, siren blaring and horn honking, before they decided to take action. The driver later said that she did not move because she was stopped at a red light and she was told never to go through a red light for any reason. She could not pull over as she was in a left turn lane with a medium beside her. All she needed to do was to go into the intersection as traffic was stopped in all directions. I really enjoy Ted’s columns. Keep up the good work.

Peter Heigh, Surrey

Report the facts on Falcon The Editor, Re: “CEOs not only ones who vote, Mr. Falcon,” the Now, Feb. 1.

It would appear that columnist Keith Baldrey showed little journalistic integrity in his article. He mistakenly assumes that the www.falcon2020.ca website is “Falcon’s Camp.” In fact, the website and movement is controlled independently by Ryan Beedie. This is privately funded and, while supporting Kevin Falcon, acts independently of his official campaign. As well, Falcon 20/20 paid for the one-page advertisement in the Sun. Most of the press releases come from Falcon 20/20 with very few coming from Falcon’s official camp. Implying that it’s Kevin who is doing all this is a lie. The real questions are: Do people feel that a strong economy provides more government revenue for funding initiatives or not? If so, who is the best leader to ensure B.C. has a strong economy? It looks like a significant number of businessmen, people who employ thousands of British Columbians and are successful contributors to the B.C. economy believe Falcon is the best choice for leadership. I imagine that writing about that won’t troll as many hits to an article though. Still, having some journalistic integrity would be refreshing. Asking you to update your article with proper facts may be too much to ask.

Letters

The Editor, I recently had the terrifying, and yet invigorating experience of spending two weeks as a patient of Peace Arch Hospital. I was touched and am eternally grateful for the incredible care and attention I received while under its thoroughly professional and consistently compassionate care. Ever single person treated me with sensitivity and care and a genuine empathy and compassion. This was for me unexpected in a world where everyone is a critic, and hospital staff get way more than their share of the flak. I salute them all. They gave me the tools and the care I needed to heal and return to the world a whole person able to resume a normal life. I want to emphasize here how all of the staff acted together as a team with a common goal – the health and well-being of the patient. They are a dedicated bunch of professionals making modern medicine work for their community. This I feel is a complex and overwhelming task even at the best of times. Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart, for helping me postpone my inevitable appointment with the pine box, and allowing me to breathe the fresh air of White Rock again. I will never forget any of you.

SURREY – Gossip is nasty, everyone agrees. Pick any office and most of the people in it would deny ever spreading malicious rumours or tantalizing tidbits about their workmates, but most of these same people are all ears when it comes to the latest dirt. Workplace experts say gossip falls under the large umbrella of bullying, an insidious and corrosive influence that can undermine employee morale and hurt the company’s bottom line. The Surrey Board of Trade is joining the 4th annual anti-bullying day campaign, Pink Shirt Day 2011. See PHOTO, thenownewspaper.com

“We are creating awareness in the workplace about bullying,” said Anita Huberman, CEO of the Surrey Board of Trade. Huberman says it’s hard to judge just how much of this type of behaviour happens. “In terms of bullying in the workplace we hear so little about it but it’s there,” she said. She notes that workplace bullying can take many forms, though rarely the physical type that so often happens in schoolyards. Social isolation, verbal aggression and over-monitoring of work can constitute bullying. “It’s very subtle but it’s still a form of bullying,” she said. And it’s not always necessarily the boss or another person in a position of power who is the culprit. “It could be the coworker to co-worker level where they’re gossiping behind each other’s backs and compromising the productivity of the workplace,” she said. Anyone interested in joining the campaign can buy a pink shirt at London Drugs or online at www. pinkshirtday.ca. All proceeds benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs. mbabic@thenow newspaper.com

Girls’ hair cut for Wigs for Kids charity With a goal in mind, Tom ZILLICH Surrey preteens Alexa and Staff reporter Olivia Mortimer began growing their hair two years ago. On Jan. 30 at a Richmond salon, it was time to have it cut and donated to a charitable cause. A Wigs for Kids B.C. event drew families from around Metro Vancouver who showed their support for children dealing with hair loss due to cancer and other illnesses. The Mortimer girls got involved to honour their grandfather, whose life was cut short by cancer. “I’m proud of them,” said their mom, Suzanne Carter. “They heard of other children donating their hair and they thought it was a great idea. It was something that would be easy for them to do and they knew it would help children who were going through a challenging situation.” The haircut-a-thon raised $12,700 for the cause and collected 62 feet of hair. Wigs for Kids B.C. chair Bev Friesen siad raising funds to help pay for human-hair wigs is necessary because no programs are in place to help families pay the cost, which can range from $1,000 to $3,000. “Having a wig that looks like the real thing is necessary for children with hair loss to begin to feel like themselves again,” Friesen said. “With a wig, kids can feel good about returning to school and resuming normal activities. Their baldness is one question they don’t have to answer.” Carter said the girls’ gesture to remember their grandfather was important, but their effort was also a good way to teach them it’s important to help others. “There are a lot of people out there who are dealing with challenges and it’s nice, when you have the opportunity, to give.” The Jan. 30 event was dedicated to the memory of Megan McNeil, the late North Delta musician and former spokesperson for Wigs for Kids B.C. The organization’s next fundraiser is its annual live and silent auction event, set for March 26. For info, visit www.wigsforkids.com.

Now that you are informed about how to start your knife collection and which cutting boards to use, it is time to focus on the act of cutting itself. Nothing is better than having a per-

sonal one-on-one lesson on cutting, but I will try to do my best in written form to communicate some basic tips to get you started. When holding a chef’s knife, it is important to have it balanced properly in your hand to reduce fatigue and improve control. To find this balance point, carefully place approximately the middle of the flat-side surface of the knife’s blade on your extended index finger, a couple of inches over a cutting board. Slowly move the knife so that your finger travels up or down the knife’s blade, to find the position on the knife where it is completely balanced by your one finger. At that point,

place your thumb of your same hand on the opposite side of the blade and wrap your remaining fingers around the handle. On a good-quality knife, this balance point will be approximately on the first inch of where the blade extends from the handle. This is usually because the knife has a full tang, and the weight of this full tang in the handle offsets the weight of the remaining steel in the knife’s extended blade. It may at first seem awkward to grasp the base of the blade in your hand, but after regular practice, it will become comfortable. Holding the knife in other fashions, such as having the index finger extended on the top of the knife when cut-

ting, will reduce the amount of control one has, and also increase the chance of injury. If you find these instructions on holding a chef’s knife are unclear, I recommend searching the internet to get a visual of this technique. Placement of the opposite hand (the one holding the food) is also just as vital to prevent injury. One should grasp the product in a claw-type fashion, with the finger tips bent inward and the thumb tucked behind them. Having the finger tips bent in toward the palm of the hand will get them out of harm’s way of the knife blade, thus reducing the risk of injury.

Dear Pam, After starting the cut, it is important to watch where the top edge of your serrated knife is as it moves along the loaf. Don’t watch the part of the knife closest to the handle, as it will follow the same even path simultaneously as the top edge.

Vancouver International Boat Show Debuts At New Venue

False Creek Yacht Club – See Boats On The Water

Back after a one-year Olympic Games hiatus, the Vancouver International Boat Show runs February 9-13, 2011, bringing consumers the newest boats and boat accessories and hottest deals in the history of the Show. Western Canada’s premier boat show is making its debut at the new Vancouver Convention Centre – giving boaters and boat enthusiasts a spectacular view of Stanley Park, the ocean and surrounding mountains – plus plenty of parking and easy access via transit.

The False Creek Yacht Club hosts the newest and biggest boats on-water. This year, the Yacht Club will be home to a variety of luxury yachts, sailboats and powerboats, many new to the Show and even new to Canada and North America. The in-water venue is the place to view these luxurious boats in their natural setting and get upclose with some of the largest and finest boats on the water. Free shuttle buses run continuously between the two venues.

2011 Show Features

2011 In-Water features

• The Seminar Series offers a variety of presentations each day from some of the most experienced boaters and marine authors including avid adventurer and author Catherine Dook, twice nominated for The Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humor.

• The 2008 65’ Marquis yacht from Blackfish Marine is the best of the best of midsize luxury yachts. The attention to detail and style are remarkable but mostly you’ll notice its magnificent size.

• The most fashionable boat of the season. Designed by renowned Vancouver fashion designer, Jason Dussault – the Centurion ENZO with custom wrap, custom interior and custom metal work is on display and up for auction. Partial proceeds benefit Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and the Children’s Wish Foundation. Join Dussault and former Canucks star goaltender Kirk McLean for the official unveiling on opening day – February 9th, 1:00pm at the Breakwater Marine Booth #1350.

• Fraser Yacht Sales Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 50 DS and the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 409 are two extraordinary new boats. Shown in-water for the first time in Canada, the 50 DS will include the 360 Docking System that allows the boat to go forward, back pivot and even sideways. Hot off its prestigious selection as 2011 European yacht of the year, the 409 will be on-hand showing the Vancouver audience why it was selected as the European favourite.

• A wealth of FREE resources and unbiased experts are on hand at the Discover Boating Centre to answer every boating question and help boat show visitors navigate their way to getting out on the water.

• Specialty Yacht Sales delivers the Hunter e36, 39 and the 50ac – all three exhibiting enhanced features that help them qualify as some of the most innovative sailboats in the industry. While the 50ac also delivers incredible size, all three boats are designed for easy handling, value for money spent and high quality.

• Kids will love the Nautical Play Centre located in the Kids Zone! There are friendly, energetic staff and lots of fun things for kids to do, including paddleboat rides. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Booth #1455.

• The Bavaria 36 sailboat makes its North American debut at the Show thanks to Yacht Sales West. This boat’s style and movement can be attributed to the first time partnership with BMW and the boat’s world famous boat designer Bruce Farr.

• At 16, Zac Sunderland set a world record as the youngest person to sail solo around the globe. Hear his stories of perilous storms, threatening pirates, and the friends he made during 13 months at sea. February 12 & 13 at 1:00pm. Seminar Stage.

• The biggest sailboat at the Show is the new Beneteau Oceanis 50, shown by Westerly Yacht Sales. The ergonomic ease of detailed design makes this boat a pleasure to operate and enjoy.

We settle into our chic suite and make use of the chef-envy kitchen, spa-style bath and heavenly bed. Just steps away is the fitness room, 24/7 latte lounge and that soothing hot tub. I could easily stay cocooned here for the entire stay. “Check out the gondola,” Brent says with kid-like glee. An outdoor centre, retail and the nosh Rockford Wok/Bar/Grill snuggle together on the lodge’s lower level; steps away, hording the limelight, is the eightpassenger speedster that will whisk us skyward. The Stoker quad that links to the top of this escalator will take us higher — to a heavenly 2,225 metres, where the Monashees and Selkirks are just about touchable. And The Ripper, another fast foursome, ascends 500 vertical metres in another direction to service more powder junkies. My head spins. Flurries fall. And the fear factor sets in. “I’ll go,” I finally say to Brent, “but not without a lesson.” The following morning, Nitzan Nzuella comes to the rescue. The

Israel-born expert with level-four credentials has skied in more places than I’ve visited. “I’ll gear the lesson totally to your ability,” she says, assuredly. “This mountain’s so big, you’ll be blown away.” Although I’m not totally comforted by these words, it’s clear she’s pumped, like others who work in this wonderland. Countless downhill options fan out before us from this picturesque plateau: Evergreen glades, challenging chutes, barren bowels. All are cloaked in an epic dump and, like today’s lift lines, are uncluttered, serene. “Just lean forward and bend your knees,” she explains, when sensing my apprehension about the thighdeep cloaking. “And tense your core.” Easy for her to say. Although this mom of a sixmonth-old has a belly tighter than a drum, mine has been slacking off for decades. And I have no recollection of this much snow! Ever! Maybe I should have opted for the lower-level dog sledding or Nordic trails. Better yet, a massage table. Too late now. At least there’s The Last Spike if I chicken out. This 15.2-kilometre trail frequently intersects the steeper pitches and assures an easier descent. But to my surprise, after following Nzuella’s lead, I don’t need this escape route — at least not yet. The untracked terrain is lighter than goose down and, thanks to her tips, I rediscover that familiar bobbing rhythm. Over the next two days, we scroll down cruisers like Critical Path and Chopper, exclaim yee-haws on Snow Rodeo and Wooly Bully and ease onto that cat track whenever our thighs burn out. When it’s time to refuel, Mackenzie Outpost and Mid Mountain Lodge are just a glide away. And soothing my well-used quads at the end of each day is that inviting hot tub. ❚ Revelstoke Mountain Resort is online at www.revelstokemountainresort.com, or call 1-866-373-4754.

Hitting the slopes in colour at Revelstoke Mountain Resort.

2 DAYS ONLY

Announce the relocation of their office to the convenient Sat, Feb. 12 new 9 am-4 pm location: Sun, Feb 13 9 am-4 pm LE

So stoked to ski Kootenays We’re on Jane CASSIE Highway 1, just Now contributor west of Revelstoke, and everything’s white — the road ahead, the shoulders beside, my husband’s knuckles. Kamikaze flakes hit the windshield like a hailing fusillade, then spiral chaotically into a tunneling vortex. Though we’re creeping ever so slowly, it feels like we’re flying faster than Alice did down the rabbit hole. “What some people will do for a little powder,” I say to Brent, who is the driving force behind this Kootenay ski trip. “OK, lots of powder!” I clarify, after hearing the record snowfall. My mountain man is psyched about the slopes. I, on the other hand, would be happy hanging around the hot tub. Eighty centimetres in the past three days is more that my quads can handle. Although Revelstoke Mountain Resort is the newest kid on North America’s ski block, this four-year old has already earned brownie badges — highest lift-serviced vertical, only village to offer lift, cat, heli and backcountry skiing, one-stop shopping, greatest annual snowfall. And there’s more. Eventually, it’ll have a total of 20 chairs and more than 100 runs. Golf greens will drape the valley floor. Hotels, housing and retail will hug up to a pedestrian village. And the activity-packed hamlet of Revelstoke will forever remain at its doorstep. World class? That’s what they’re aiming for. There’s a definite buzz about the pending development, and with this three-day snowfall, the hype has escalated. “It’s been years since we’ve had dump like this!” the check-in receptionist says excitedly. “And they’re calling for another 10 overnight.” It’s even more reason to cozy up in this posh Nelsen Lodge, I think to myself. Gleaming granite, sleek slate, polished wood. Nels Nelsen, the 1920s record-holding ski jumper, and lodge’s namesake, would be proud.

Surrey Eagles goalie Karel St-Laurent turned aside this drive, but the league-leading Powell River Kings scored on three other chances ❚PHOTO/Damon James – BCHL in a 3-0 win in B.C. Hockey League play at South Surrey Arena Thursday night.

❚JUNIOR A HOCKEY

Eagles’ win streak snapped at six “Everybody goes through it and we did win four of the six games. Losing the last two may be a good thing in way, better than losing Wednesday and Thursday and winning Friday. Winning the last game might mask the two losses but now we have a break of almost a week and those two losses are going to sit with us because we play both those teams again next weekend.” Against Victoria Friday, the Eagles created numerous scoring chances while outshooting the Grizzlies 41-24 on the evening. Victoria goalie Matt Ginn proved to be the difference as turned aside all but one of those Surrey shots to beat the Eagles for the second time in three weeks. “We were probably unlucky not to be up 3-0 after the first period,” Erhart said. “We outshot them 208 and we were all over them with quality chances but their goalie made some huge saves. They’re a good team with three lines and we’ve done a good job of shutting them down but their goalie

has been the first star the last two times we’ve played them.” Richard Vanderhoek scored the lone Eagles goal late in the second period. Thursday night at South Surrey Arena the Eagles squared off against one of the best junior A teams in the country in the Powell River Kings. After a slow start in which Surrey fell behind 1-0 in the opening frame, the Eagles played better in the final two periods but, thanks to the Kings defence and goaltender Michael Garteig, the Birds came away empty handed. Powell River made Surrey pay for taking penalties as the Kings scored power play markers in the second and third periods to salt the game away. “To be honest in the first period we weren’t that good and they took it to us,” Erhart said. “We played much better in the second period and had a ton of good scoring chances but I don’t know what it is but it seems their goalie is in our heads. We made him look

good and he made the saves he had to make.” Surrey opened the week on the road Wednesday where they derailed the Coquitlam Express 5-2. After falling behind early, the Eagles scored three straight goals to take a commanding lead. Coquitlam narrowed the gap to 3-2 in the second period before Surrey pulled away with two unanswered goals in the final frame. Vanderhoek, Scott Holm, Jeff Vanderlugt, Michael Stenerson and Colton Mackie each scored once for Surrey. “Coquitlam’s playing desperate hockey right now and they had a good push at us,” Erhart said. “We got goals from all four lines and we played a really solid road game. We had 40 shots again on them and this time we managed to score five. It was a good road game and we did a really good job of limiting their chances.” The Eagles hit the road this weekend for games in Powell River, Victoria and Port Alberni.

020411

The Surrey Michael BOOTH Eagles crashed Sports Editor to earth with a pair of home-ice losses to Coastal Conference rivals in B.C. Hockey League action last week. Surrey extended its win streak to six games with a 5-2 win in Coquitlam Wednesday but the run of success ended the following night when the league-leading Powell River Kings blanked the Eagles 3-0 at South Surrey Arena. Surrey’s woes continued Friday when another visiting goalie stole the show to help the Victoria Grizzlies knock off the Eagles 3-1. Surrey remains in second place in the conference standings well behind Powell River. The two losses ended a tough stretch of schedule in which the Eagles played six games in eight days. “I told the guys that this is what it’s like in the playoffs so there’s no need to make excuses about a schedule or anything like that,” said Eagles coach Matt Erhart.

the provincial championship event. The Cormack rink — Cormack and teammates Frank LaBounty, Vince Miele and Allison Duddy — opened with a 6-3 win over the Jim Armstrong rink and then dispatched Bob MacDonald 10-2 to earn a bye in

to the final. The MacDonald foursome advanced to Sunday’s final where they gave up six points in the first four ends and wound up on the short end of an 8-3 final score against Cormack’s rink.

Phil Reimer’s

Sharks let win slip through fingers golf report

Squandered Michael BOOTH opportunities Sports Editor unraveled an otherwise strong showing by Bayside Sharks in a 16-10 loss to Capilano in Canadian Direct Insurance premier league rugby action at South Surrey Athletic Park Saturday. The loss leveled the Sharks’ record at 1-1 after two weeks of play. Bayside coach David Benoit said Capilano provided a much stiffer test for the Sharks than Cowichan did in a onesided romp one week previously. “Last week we looked good because we were never under any pressure,” Benoit said. “This was our first real exposure to pressure in a game situation and having to perform at a higher speed. We have two weeks until our next game and I’m hoping we’ll be in better form then. “It’s just basic catching and passing that let us down, basic errors that

www.jptoyota-surrey.com

robbed us of momentum.” By Benoit’s count, the Sharks outchanced the visitors 13-2 in the games but bobbled the ball on at least 20 occasions. To make matters worse, the Sharks were whistled for nine penalties in the first half alone. “Capilano is well structured defensively and hard to score against but we were our own worst enemies,” Benoit said. “It was a bad day at the office because in our first phase moves, we just didn’t execute. Capilano has a good young team but this was a game that we definitely let get away from us. It was a frustrating game.” Prop Taylor Stogryn was named the man of the match for Bayside while Benoit singled out the strong play of winger Jesse Train in just his second start at premier level. In CDI first division play, the Sharks fell 33-19 to Capilano despite

a pair of tries from Zach Thorpe. Senirusi Rauge also scored a try for Bayside while Dan Dixon and Mike Pinfield each slotted home one conversion.

❚ Elsewhere, the Surrey Beavers headed south of the border where they dropped a narrow 22-18 decision to Seattle in B.C. Rugby Union first division play. Flanker Paul Kelly scored Surrey’s only try of the opening half to lift the Beavers to a 13-10 lead at the break. Seattle took over in the second half with two tries, one of which was converted, before the Beavers closed out the scoring with a late unconverted effort by Bret Huber. Beavers coach Kevin Taylor singled out backs Chris Black and Clay Ross and forwards Nick Halstrom and Aaron Dennoyer for their contributions against Seattle.

Golfers make a lot of money in a tournament and just one seventh-place finish or better will clear the medical hurdle for Mike. His next opportunity comes on Feb. 17 when he plays at one of his favourite courses—Riviera. He won there in his Masters winning year of 2003 — has it been that long ago — and in ’04. Mike is 40 now; his caddy has left to join Sean O’Hair. As you get older obstacles can play on your mind. Stephen Ames did not have a great season last year, finishing the season with a back injury and so far this year his best finish was at the Bob Hope Classic where he finished 33rd. Keep in mind that Stephen is only six years away from the Champions Tour. While golfers win at 46 on the PGA Tour, it gets increasingly tougher. Meanwhile our best hope, Graham De Laet – given his near million-dollar season last year – is out after a minor operation and not expected back until March.

One thing our Canadians have is time. It’s early in the season and it will take until mid-summer to determine if this large contingent has the right stuff. Meanwhile you can lend some support when they are expected to all be here for the Canadian Open when it’s played at Shaughnessy this year. It must be frustrating for the PGA Golf scene when they see top players like Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, Retief Goosen, Steve Stricker and others like John Daly, who is a draw, playing in Europe this past week while the PGA Tournament with a few exceptions, like Phil Mickelson, lacks the depth of field you would expect of a tournament that draws one of the biggest if not the biggest crowd of the year. That cold weather they had, that happens a lot in the desert at this time of year. About five years ago some friends were scheduled to play and had to cancel because of snow. I played with some friends who are members at a very expensive private course in South Florida. I rented some clubs, expecting that they would compare to a private club in Canada. What I got was a mixture of old beat up clubs with one of the members having to go back and ask them to put in a sand wedge in my bag. Be proud B.C. – our private clubs where I have noticed rentals are a lot, and I mean a lot, superior.

Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
