SURREY – Chin Injeti is a Grammy winner, thanks to his work on Eminem’s Recovery, voted Best Rap Album in Los Angeles Sunday night. The musician/producer has called Surrey home for the past 12 years. On Monday afternoon, Injeti was still in Los Angeles after soaking up the Grammy awards the

night before. “It’s so crazy, so crazy, man – it hasn’t really settled in,” he told the Now. “I was screaming like a kid last night and, oh man, it’s amazing.” Injeti has never before been nominated for a Grammy, although he earned Juno awards with his Toronto-based soul/funk band, Bass is Base, in the early 1990s. For Eminem’s mega-seller Recovery album, Injeti has writing/performing credits on a pair

of tracks, “Almost Famous” and “Talkin’ to Myself.” “It’s amazing to be part of it. I’m so proud,” said Injeti. It’s a landmark week for Injeti, whose new album, D’Tach, is released today (Tuesday) on Sparks Records. Later this month, on Feb. 25 at the iconic Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, he opens for saxophone legend Maceo Parker, who played on James Brown’s most celebrated albums.

In recent years, Injeti’s production work with studio partner DJ Khalil has been featured on albums by 50 Cent, Dr. Dre, Kanye West, Drake and other hip-hop stars. Born in India, Injeti’s family moved to Canada when he was five, where he earned a degree in music education at the University of Toronto. Yes, loud commercials are annoying but so are politicians who play silly political games

etting noticed can be difficult for a backbencher in Ottawa, but Fleetwood-Port Kells Conservative MP Nina Grewal has found a way. With her announcement late last week that she has tabled a private member’s bill to force broadcasters to turn down the volume on TV commercials, Grewal created her very own Warhol moment and drew the attention of the national media. Her bill will doubtless be popular with many Canadians annoyed by the auditory assault of television ads, but is it the best use of Parliament’s time? We don’t think so. Before we take the time to debate the pros and cons of loud TV commercials, perhaps we might want to see what can

We don’t want to hear it either, Nina. be done to protect Canadians from a fragile and faltering global economy. The Canadian economy relies heavily on selling our wares abroad. If those foreign economies that constitute our customer

base go sideways, we’ll be in trouble. We might also ask our politicians to develop strategies to help us navigate the consequences, whatever they may be, of the unrest that is sweeping the Arab world. Some of those Arab countries have oil. Unrest there could be felt here. We might even go so far as to request that our elected representatives in Ottawa – of all political stripes – stop playing their silly political games and spend more time thinking about why we sent them there and less time plotting ways to stay there. We would prefer all of these issues take precedence over the volume of television pitchmen. We hope you would, too. Nor are we convinced this issue represents the best use of Nina Grewal’s time.

North Delta will ‘walk, run and roll’ in memory of slain teen Laura Szendrei NORTH DELTA – Nearly Tom five months after popular ZILLICH Staff Reporter teen Laura Szendrei was murdered in broad daylight, Darlene McLean’s daughter still won’t go for a jog outdoors. “Neither will her friends, because it’s a matter of them feeling safe,” McLean said. “I was angry about that, that they’d run on a treadmill inside instead of going outside to get their exercise.” To help make North Delta a safer place, McLean and others are organizing a Walk, Run and Roll in memory of Laura Szendrei on Sunday, April 10. The event began life several months ago as a “take back the streets” rally, but police and politicians were concerned the message was too aggressive. Organizers agreed, giving the event a “Walk, Run and Roll” title and a goal of raising funds for two sports scholarships in Laura’s name. “Our goal is to bring the community together, that’s what we want to happen,” said McLean, whose job is to attract sponsors to what could become an annual event. “Excitement is building, and people are getting into it,” she added. As of Monday, more than 1,700 Facebook users indicated they’d attend the event, which will start and finish at the soccer field at Burnsview Secondary and weave through the streets of North Delta along two routes (one five kilometres, the other 10). SURREY – A Surrey family is hoping the public can help locate one of its missing members. Nikita Cheryl-Lynn Jack dropped off her three-year-old daughter at her cousin’s home on Thursday, Feb. 10. She was to pick up the girl that evening, but has not been seen or heard from since, which the family says is very unusual. She was reported missing on Feb. 12. Jack is described as aboriginal, 23 years old, five foot five with a medium build. She has two tattoos of initials – “NJ” on the top of her left hand and “ZK” on the top of her right hand. Housing project breaks ground SURREY – All three levels of government and the YWCA have banded together to fund a new $12.5-million supportive housing project for women and their children in danger of becoming homeless. The bulk of the cost will be borne by the province with a contribution of nearly $9 million. Ottawa will kick in more than $438,000, while the City of Surrey will provide land valued at $1.4 million and a $1.1-million tax break. The YWCA will provide an equity contribution of more than $634,500 and will manage and operate the building once complete. The province will also provide annual operating funds of $212,000. The project is known as Alder Gardens and will include 36 apartments at 13788 71st Ave. where other amenities, including counselling, will be available. Alder Gardens is part of an agreement between Surrey and the provincial government to build 110 units of new supportive housing in two developments. The second project is the Creekside Health and Housing Centre, 13670 94A Ave. where construction is scheduled to begin this year. – Compiled by staff

Instead of handing out Valentine’s cards, though, the police were presenting them with tickets to the tune of $167 during a traffic enforcement blitz at King George Boulevard and 88th Avenue around noon Monday. These motorists have been driving traffic cops to distraction. “The person that’s doing it never thinks that a collision is going to involve themselves because their explanation is they’re doing it safely,” Const. Raymond Lee said at the scene. “What people do now is they know we’re actively enforcing it so they try to hide it, which makes it even more dangerous. So they put it in their lap. “What we’re looking for now is people looking into their lap while they’re at a light or driving. We’re looking for the eyes down at the lap, it’s a real tell-tale sign.” Monday’s blitz was part of a monthlong campaign to curb distracted drivers. Since the beginning of February, RCMP traffic cops throughout the Lower Mainland have issued 705 tickets, and 1,287 since the beginning of the year. It’s not just cellphone users and texters

Surrey man charged in girlfriend’s death A Surrey man has been charged with manslaughter after his girlfriend’s body was found wrapped in plastic in North Vancouver’s Kirkstone Park. Harvey Frank Bracken, 48, was arrested in Burnaby on Friday. He appeared in North Vancouver provincial court Monday. The family of Jennifer Ferguson, also known as Jennifer Sondergaard, reported the 40year-old woman missing from her home in the 14600-block of 84th Avenue on Jan. 30, about a week after they last saw her. Homicide

investigators believe she was killed in Surrey. Her body was found on Feb. 2. She had three children, in their mid-teens to early 20s. Cpl. Dale JENNIFER FERGUSON Carr, spokesman for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said police had Bracken under surveillance from ground and by helicopter

for 10 days before arresting him. Bracken had been identified as a suspect within days after Ferguson’s body was found and police did the next-of-kin notification with help from Coquitlam RCMP Victim Services. Police held back the identity of the victim from the media for several days due to “strategic investigational considerations,” Carr said. Investigators have not revealed how Ferguson was killed. SURREY – Former Tom Surrey border guard Daniel ZYTARUK Staff Reporter Greenhalgh could be facing up to three years in prison. A jury deliberated for less than four hours before finding him guilty last October of three counts of sexual assault and one count of breach of public trust for illegally stripsearching four young women at the Peace Arch border crossing in 2007. Both the Crown and defence made sentencing submissions on Friday, in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster. Brotherly love not enough to avoid stabbings Tom ZYTARUK Staff Reporter

SURREY – Surrey RCMP investigated two stabbing cases this weekend involving brothers. Two teenaged brothers were stabbed during a fight at the Scott Road SkyTrain station at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Police said the brothers, aged 15 and 16, sustained stab wounds that required stitches but weren’t considered life threatening, after getting into a fight with unknown suspects. In an unrelated case, a fight erupted between three brothers in a basement suite in the 12300-block of 90th Avenue shortly before noon Sunday, leaving the eldest, age 22, suffering from serious stab wounds to his abdomen and cuts to his face. His youngest brother, age 19, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a weapon. They’d apparently been in an alcohol-fueled fight over a “family issue,” police said. The victim’s injuries are considered serious but not life threatening. Names have not been released. tzytaruk@thenow newspaper.com.

How I long for the good ol’ days of leadership selection The B.C. Liberals have done the smart thing and changed the way of choosing their next leader to ensure all Keith BALDREY regions of this diverse province have a say in the matter. Unfortunately, it appears the NDP won’t be doing that and instead will be using the one member-one vote method, which was once trendy but which now can create more problems than it solves. The way of choosing political leaders has varied over the years. For decades, the preferred option was a delegated convention, which saw people – often committed party loyalists and activists – elected by fellow party members in their home ridings to attend a convention to vote for a new leader. I’ve had the good fortune to have attended several exciting – even historic – delegated leadership conventions over the years, and frankly they can be riveting events. I covered the 1983 Progressive Conservative convention in Ottawa, where Brian Mulroney defeated Joe Clark in an electrifying contest that captivated the nation (I was working for the old and now defunct Columbian newspaper, based in New Westminster). On the last ballot, as it became apparent Clark was about to lose power, I noticed everyone had pretty much deserted him. He sat with a knot of supporters in the stands of the old Civic arena. I went up and sat just behind him, and watched the bedlam below as Mulroney took over his party. A year later, the B.C. NDP met in the PNE Agrodome to pick a successor to Dave Barrett. It went

because the outcome of each was not really in doubt). Campbell was the first B.C. leader chosen by the one memberone vote system, and frankly it was a rather lifeless, limp affair. The NDP recently made the switch to the same system, and one has to wonder whether the party is having second thoughts. While there were certainly flaws with the delegated system (i.e. the disastrous choice of Skelly), the fact is it was a system that could breath enormous energy and excitement into a political party. By contrast, the one memberone vote system focuses on the initial excitement of signing up members, but doesn’t necessarily sustain that excitement (or even the commitment to the party of those who take part in mass signups). As well, the system is open to manipulation, as one particular community or constituency can swamp everyone else through mass sign-ups. And the odds of fraud being committed may increase with so many people taking out membership forms. By moving to a regional, weighted system – in which all party members do indeed get to cast a

ballot, but in which that ballot is counted at the local (riding) level, and not as part of a provincewide pool – the B.C. Liberals have taken a significant step away from the pure one member-one vote system, and have inched closer to the old delegate system. Hopefully, the NDP will eventually get to the same spot. The pendulum may be actually be swinging back to the old days, which in this case may be a rare bit of good news for our political system. five ballots, before an obscure Vancouver Island MLA – Bob Skelly – emerged the winner because two top candidates (Dave Vickers and Bill King) simply could not support each other, and so allowed an unexceptional candidate to sneak up the middle. I have particular fondness for that convention because I won the media pool (along with fellow Vancouver Sun reporter Tom Barrett), as we were the only ones to foresee the unlikely Skelly victory. But the greatest leadership convention in B.C. history may well have been the 1986 convention in Whistler, where Bill Vander Zalm was picked to succeed Bill Bennett as leader of the Social Credit party. There were 12 candidates in that race, which meant 12 hospitality tents, 12 open bars and 12 barbecues open for almost a week at the end of July. Vander Zalm was picked after several ballots in the sweltering convention centre, and the seeds of the eventual destruction of the political dynasty were sown. The conventions that picked Mike Harcourt, Gordon Campbell, Glen Clark and Ujjal Dosanjh were far less dramatic (perhaps

Muslim ideals incompatible with Canadian way of life The Editor, Re: “Curbing number of Muslims would ‘turn page on failed policies,” the Now, Feb. 11. Thank you for including this excellent and thought-provoking article by Tom Zytaruk. Although some would think of the CHP as out of touch, candidate Mike Stouten makes a lot of valid points. When he says it’s about protecting Canadian values as outlined in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, he’s absolutely correct. All Canadians should value, and be prepared to defend, the freedoms for which many brave men and women fought and died for us to enjoy. The fact is that Islam, as expressed in the Quran, is

incompatible with Canadian societal values. How many Muslim countries can we point to as a model of tolerance, freedom of expression, human rights, gender equality, social justice and other democratic values? In fact, sharia law is quite the opposite and countries that practice it are repressive and brutal in the extreme. If this were not so, I might rethink my position. I have read what the Quran says about infidels and how they are to be treated, and I recommend others do the same, it will open your eyes. We cannot remain passive on this issue or Canadian leaders will be forced to admit the failure of our multicultural model.

Cyclists avoid cycling lanes because of drivers’ ignorance The Editor, Re: “Bicycle lanes being wasted,” the Now letters, Feb. 11. I would be glad to tell the letter writer why some cyclists do not always use the bicycle lanes. My husband bikes to work every day, (yes, he uses the bicycle lanes), and he frequently has problems with drivers. He has been honked at, yelled at, sworn at and nearly knocked off his bike. All this has happened while he was

using the bicycle lane. Drivers do not seem to realize what a bicycle lane is. And so, the problem does not lie with the cyclists (who are quite literally being pushed off the road). Drivers, on the other hand, need to pay more attention and be courteous to cyclists. Like the signs say, “Share the road!”

In a colourful room at Christ the Redeemer Anglican Church in Cloverdale, she’s the leader of popular Gymboree play classes for the preschool set — a familiar face and first teacher for many local children. At month’s end, however, Plangg will pack away mascot Jimbo the Clown one last time and close the doors of the fun-filled facility. “It’s time to pass the baton,” said Plangg, who is looking to sell franchise rights for the Surrey, White Rock and Delta region. The Gymboree parent company is mandating all franchisees operate in commercial space with a larger variety of class options, and identical look and feel for each space. Plangg isn’t ready to make the switch. “I’ve always wanted to run it as my own thing, and I don’t want to take on the huge quest of moving this whole business and taking it to another level, which is necessary,” she told the Now. “I got into this as a mom-and-pop operation and do as many things as I could on my own during as many days of the week as I could.” Plangg’s son, now 23, attended Gymboree class in Calgary. When the family moved to Port Moody, she set out to launch similar classes here, as a self-employment venture, and found space on Bell Road, at Old McLellan. “Back then, we were surrounded by forests and practically no houses. That’s changed,” she said with a laugh. Gymboree class attracts mostly babies and toddlers, with emphasis on physical activity. Clients come and go — and sometimes come back a few years later, from as far afield as Abbotsford and Chilliwack. “I won’t see someone for four or five years, sometimes even 10 years, and they’re back with another child. Well, whoops! ‘We’ve had another one,’ you know? We haven’t seen second-generation kids, though — not quite.” The youngest child at one of Plangg’s classes

opted for one drink each. I remember my husband saying back then, “One day, it won’t be like this. But for now, let’s just appreciate what we do have.” Ever since, I don’t think there has been one day that has passed that either of us hasn’t appreciated what we have together. We send one another flowers when we are feeling down (yes, I send them too). We call to check in to see how the other is doing each day. We spend time at night after the kids are in bed to talk about our day. Every day we say, “I love you,” and we still hold hands when we are together. We also set one night aside each month for a special dinner — although, with the kids around, sometimes we can’t actually get out of the house. So instead, we opt for a special dinner in — to enjoy after the kids are in bed. This year, for our anniversary, we are headed back to Waterfront Hotel for a weekend stay and celebratory drink in its lounge. Only this time, we can afford it, and there won’t be any peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on the menu. And that’s something we can definitely appreciate.

Although Valentine’s Day was yesterday and the day made for lovers has passed, my husband and I are, instead, celebrating today. That’s because our wedding anniversary is the day Kelley after Valentine’s Day. With 14 years under our belt, I’ve definitely learned a thing or two about marriage. Everyone always wants to know the secret to a long and happy marriage. What I’ve discovered is that there is no secret or mystery to it — it’s just about two people loving one another for better or for worse, and truly appreciating each other. When my husband and I were in our early 20s, we were inseparable. We spent every waking minute together. Within the first year of dating, my husband asked me to marry him. After we were married, we didn’t have much money. We rented a one-bedroom apartment and survived on macaroni and cheese and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches most of the time. When I was in university, there was one particular night when we travelled to Vancouver for dinner. We decided to visit the Waterfront Hotel lounge. Is there anything I can do to protect my interest in the home without separating and starting a court proceeding? Yes, there is. Under a statute called the Land (Spouse Protection) Act, you can file a lien in the Land Title Office against your family home. After filing that lien, your wife would not be allowed to sell the family home without your consent. Such a lien can only be filed if the property was used as the family home and if it is solely in the other spouse’s name. If your wife has already transferred the home to someone else for less than market value, you might have a claim under the Fraudulent Conveyance Act and sue her and the transferee to have the home transferred back to your wife. You need to speak to a lawyer as soon as possible to deal with your concerns.

Hoop battles heat up as playoffs begin

Surrey’s high Michael BOOTH school boys’ Sports Editor class AAA basketball teams wrapped up the regular season last week and immediately began preparation for the division playoffs, which get underway today (Feb. 15). The final week of the season settled the pecking order for both the Fraser Valley West and Fraser Valley Central divisions. The Enver Creek Cougars, ranked eighth in B.C., completed an undefeated run through the Central zone while in the West, the Tamanawis Wildcats held off the North Delta Huskies and White Rock Christian Warriors

to nail down the top spot. Tamanawis and North Delta finished with identical 9-1 records but the Wildcats earned first place base on a win over the Huskies. The top eight teams from each division advance to the Fraser Valley championship tournament and this week’s zone tournaments are critical for seeding. “The Valley tournament is always tough and there are no easy games,” said Tamanawis coach Surinder Grewal. “They say the Fraser Valley is one of the toughest, if not the toughest, zones to get out of and make it to the provincials. We beat up on each other so much and if you

can make it out, you’re more than ready for the provincials.” In the Central division, Enver Creek clinched first place with a 72-49 win over previously undefeated Fleetwood Park Dragons Tuesday before closing out the schedule with a 73-55 win over Kwantlen Park Thursday. The Dragons bounced back from Tuesday’s loss to defeat Clayton Heights 64-53 on Thursday night to assure themselves of a second place finish. The top eight teams in the Central now playoff for the division’s playoff title beginning tonight. The teams take Wednesday off before concluding

with games Thursday and Friday. “It’s going to be an interesting playoff for sure,” said Enver Creek coach Rick Inrig. “Eight teams move on to the Fraser Valleys and there are a lot of teams that will battle well. Everybody will be fighting for placement and even though we’re in the Fraser Valleys, there’s still pressure. You want to be doing as well as you can and getting a good seeding position for the main tournament.” The West playoffs will follow a different format with the top five teams earning a bye through today’s opening round. Eagles top Kings to clinch second golf report The Surrey Michael BOOTH Sports Editor Eagles knocked off league-leading Powell River Kings to clinch second place in the B.C. Hockey League’s Coastal Conference standings - and then promptly fell flat on their faces with two discouraging losses to end a three game weekend road swing. Outscored 8-1 in their last two outings against the Kings, the Eagles turned the tables with a 6-4 win in Powell River Friday. The next night Surrey was tripped up 5-1 in Victoria by the Grizzlies, followed by a 3-1 loss Sunday in Alberni Valley. “Fifteen games into the season we set a goal of finishing second and we’re pretty proud of that,” said Eagles coach Matt Erhart. “Now we have 15 games left to get focused for the playoffs. We know where we start (at home) so our job now is to get ready for this week and get some more wins on the board.” Surrey kicked off the weekend with an impressive showing against the normally stingy Powell River defence. The Eagles blitzed the Kings for four first period goals and then survived a second period scare before nailing down their first win over Powell River in 2011.

After josh Monk opened the scoring, the Eagles added three more goals in the final 10 minutes of the opening frame to take the commanding lead. Tyler Morley led the way with two goals while Colton Mackie bagged the fourth. The Kings stormed back in the second period, scoring three times in the first seven minutes to cut Surrey’s lead to one. Erhart called a time out to settle his team down and the move paid off in the form of two Surrey goals 30 seconds apart to drain the momentum from the Kings. Brad McGowan’s goal turned the tide before Morley netted his third goal of the evening. Powell River added a power play goal late in the middle frame but that was as close as they would come. “We prepped really hard for that game and we tried a few different things to create more offence and it worked,” Erhart said. “We obviously worked hard to beat them in their building but we also got a few bounces go our way that we hadn’t got the last few times we played them. Two of our goals in the first period came on the kind of awkward bounces that Powell River had gotten when we played them before.” The win, coupled with Victoria’s 3-

2 loss to Coquitlam, sewed up second place in the standings for Surrey. The Eagles were still riding the emotional high of Friday’s win when they arrived in Victoria Saturday and were promptly mauled 5-1 by the Grizzlies. Victoria badly outplayed the Eagles in the first period, outshooting the Birds 20-13 and scoring three unanswered goals. Monk scored Surrey’s lone goal of the night in the second period before the Grizzlies iced the game with two more goals in the third. Surrey wrapped up the weekend in Port Alberni where the host Bulldogs skated away with a two-goal win. Surrey opened the scoring with Morley’s fourth goal of the weekend less than two minutes after the opening faceoff but that was it for the Eagles’ highlights. The Bulldogs scored two goals less than three minutes apart late in the opening frame and then added a power-play marker in the second period to close out the scoring. Surrey concludes the regular season with three games this week. The Eagles play a home-and-home set with the Express beginning Wednesday at South Surrey Arena followed by a rematch Friday in Coquitlam. Next. The Vancouver Pro Tour? No, wrong and in fact the tour hasn’t started yet. Don’t you know it’s still winter in Canada? The correct answer is the Champions Tour. What! I think most who play golf around the Lower Mainland would have been surprised to hear it was two Canadians who finished tied for second and sixth on the weekend on that tour. Rod Spittle of St Catharines, Ont. is the one who tied for second. In fact, if he had made a putt on 18 would have tied the eventual winter Tom Lehman and gone into a playoff. Spittle is not a golf household name but he is playing on the Champions Tour as a result of qualifying for the tour on a Monday last year, making the tournament and then winning a tournament — that rarely ever happens. Jim Rutledge, a B.C. player from Victoria who was the oldest player to ever get his card through Qualifying School to play on the PGA Tour, has played everywhere and certainly that experience allowed him to post a 67, which tied for the lowest score in the final round. Spittle never played professional golf for 25 years after graduating with an MBA from Ohio State — he sold insurance. He turned pro at 50 when he became eligible for the Champions Tour. A lot of disappointment for five years, but he could afford to keep at it until, as we noted, he broke through last year.
