T

hey were expecting to see a scary monster, a big bogeyman. But the image Rachael and Mike Szendrei had conjured up was a far cry from the skinny kid who appeared in Surrey provincial court Monday, charged with first-degree murder in the beating death of their 15-yearold daughter, Laura, in North Delta’s Mackie Park last September. “I’d like to rip his head off,” the burly – and

clearly enraged – dad told reporters outside the courthouse. The accused, he remarked, is “a little chicken head. It’s lucky it wasn’t me he ran into.” “I hope his family feels like I feel inside.” Laura’s mother was surprised when she laid eyes on the teen, saying she’d expected a “big bogeyman, a scary monster.” Prosecutor Wendy Stephen said the Crown will seek an adult sentence for the 18-year-old North Deltan, if he’s found guilty. That would work out to life without eligibility to apply for parole until 25 years are served.

The accused was 17 when Laura was killed, so it is illegal to publish his name as the Youth Criminal Justice Act shields his identity. Under the YCJA, a first-degree murder conviction carries a sentence of 10 years, with six in custody. The accused remains in custody and his next court appearance is scheduled for March 7. Meantime, Rachael Szendrei let out a big “Whoo!” when police revealed Monday they’d laid a charge in Laura’s savage death. She said the family had unveiled the girl’s gravestone on Sunday.

❚LAURA SZENDREI/Community reacts to arrest of young suspect

Teen charged with murder  continued from page 1 “Today we are here with mixed emotions. We feel the same depth of loss, grief and heartbreak but today for the first time we also have a sense of relief,” Rachael said. “Daily we face the reality that Laura will not be in her room or at the dinner table; she won’t be at the school, the soccer field or at family celebrations. She is simply not coming back.” Laura died in hospital on Sept. 26, one day after she was viciously beaten in broad daylight in Mackie Park, while walking through the forest in the 8200-block of 110th Street in North Delta. Her murder shook the community. Delta police Sgt. Sharlene Brooks said the accused was arrested early Sunday morning near the Surrey-Delta border but she wouldn’t say where. She said she didn’t know if it was at a park. Students and staff at Burnsview Secondary school, where Laura had attended, refused to comment on the arrest Monday morning. Chelsea Jewell, who turned 19 on Sunday, is friends with Laura’s sister, Sarah. She paid her respects at a roadside memorial to Laura, near the crime scene, a couple hours after news of the arrest broke. She said there’s a feeling of relief in the neighbourhood. “It’s an amazing feeling,” she said. “It’s the best birthday present I’ve ever got, that’s for sure. “I came here the day it happened and I’m here now. It’s kind of like a closure for me, I guess, in a roundabout sense.” Jewell said she’d talked with Laura’s sister, Sarah, on Monday morning. “Her (Laura’s) sister doesn’t know what she feels. I talked to Sarah this morning, I said, ‘I send out my prayers for you and your parents’ and everything and she sounded happy, really really happy. Her and her sister were like me and my sister, they were best friends.” She confirmed she knew the accused and expressed shock and disbelief that he is the police’s suspect. “I don’t believe it,” she said. “I don’t know, I don’t think I have the right to say yes or no... but in my opinion I don’t think so.” During a press conference Monday, Brooks said police have no evidence to suggest Laura knew her accused killer. She said the investigation is still active but police don’t believe anyone else was involved. The accused doesn’t have a history with police, she added. “It’s very difficult to answer whether it was random or targeted,” Brooks said of the killing. “There’s two avenues in which someone could be targeted. Specifically as a person, or because an opportunity presented itself. We believe an opportunity presented itself.” Police have not released how Laura was killed. There’s speculation a baseball bat was used but police have not confirmed this. There was no sign of sexual assault. More than 55 police officers have worked on the case, sifting through some 500 tips from the public. Early in the investigation, police indicated they may have identified a person of interest they were looking for, who was seen leaving Mackie Park wearing a backpack on the afternoon Szendrei was attacked. Brooks said this person was located but eliminated as a suspect. Meanwhile, Delta police continue to investigate two other attacks on women in North Delta. In both cases the culprit snuck up from behind and struck the women on the head with an unknown object. On May 24, an 18-year-old woman was hit

On June 7, a woman in her early 50s heard heavy footsteps from behind before she was struck on the back of her head, while she was jogging near Burns Bog, in the 10600-block of Santa Monica Drive. A couple weeks after Laura’s murder, Delta parks and recreation cut tree limbs and widened pathways in Mackie Park in an effort to make it safer. There is a movement afoot to have the park renamed after her. A Walk, Run and Roll event will go ahead as scheduled in North Delta on April 10, said organizer Brian White. “I think there’s some relief, but there will be a lot of kids still scared in the community, some apprehension. I don’t think anybody should let their guard down just because an arrest has been made.” tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

SURREY – The arts centre’s main stage will close for two months this summer for major upgrades to the space. New seats, carpet, paint and electrical work are part of the renovation project in the 402-seat theatre, which hasn’t been given a significant facelift in close to 25 years. A funding announcement from the federal government is expected Tuesday at the opening night of The Sea Horse, an Arts Company on Tour production. To get the job done, the City of Surrey will match $118,000 in grant money from Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, said Sheila McKinnon, the city’s manager of arts services. Another $45,000 was raised during a public Stand Up for the Arts campaign, launched in November 2009 to replace the theatre’s aging seats. “We’ll be able to give the whole audience chamber a facelift,” McKinnon told the Now on Monday. “It’s exciting. It’s going to make a huge difference in there, and bring it in line with the look of the rest of the building (which was last renovated in 2001).” MP Nina Grewal (Fleetwood-Port Kells) will be at the arts centre tonight to make a funding announcement, on behalf of James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. The busy theatre at Bear Creek Park will close for renovations this coming August and September, McKinnon said. Seats can still be purchased by the public through the Stand Up for the Arts Campaign, she added. For as little as $350, or us much as $500, depending on the location of the seat in the theatre, patrons can “buy” a seat complete with nameengraved brass plaque on the armrest. tzillich@thenow newspaper.com

SURREY – Surrey’s Ted COLLEY new hospital will treat its Staff Reporter first patient in just 100 days and billionaire Jimmy Pattison is cutting a cheque with a lot of zeros on it to help get things off to a good start. The Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation launched its “100 Days to Give” campaign Monday, hoping to raise $10 million for equipment and other resources for the new health centre. Pattison’s donation is $5 million, half of what’s needed. “This region has seen such tremendous development in recent years,” Pattison told a large crowd of dignitaries gathered at the new hospital Monday. “I am pleased to be able to join this community effort to attract new doctors by purchasing medical equipment.” In return for his generosity, the new

facility at Fraser Highway and 140th Street will be known as the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre, scheduled to open in June. The centre will offer day surgery, diagnostic procedures and specialized health programs under one roof. The new centre is intended to relieve pressure on the overburdened Surrey Memorial Hospital. Coast Capital Savings president and CEO Tracy Redies also announced her organization will contribute a further $500,000 to the campaign and challenged other Surrey businesses to make their own donations. MLA Dave Hayer was on hand to represent the provincial government, which contributed capital funding for the $237million centre. tcolley@thenownewspaper.com

Girl’s missing insulin pump found SURREY – Well, that Tom ZYTARUK was quick. Staff Reporter Shortly after today’s issue of the Now newspaper hit doorsteps this morning, featuring a front page photo and story of Chiara de Maere, a diabetic Surrey girl whose $7,000 insulin pump mysteriously disappeared from a change room at a local swimming pool, her dad received a call to come pick the pump up at the pool.

He said the staff had been reading the Now when he got there. A manager told the Now that the pump had been located inside a locker. “All’s well that ends well,” she said. The 10-year-old girl’s dad couldn’t agree more. “I’m pretty ecstatic,” he said. “I’m just super excited. Thanks for the story. That’s probably what made the difference out there.”

Grade 11 gym class mandatory for high school kids. “At the present time, there’s no requirement for a Grade 11 or 12 student to take physical education. It’s voluntary,” he said. At Thursday’s school board meeting, Masi will be urging his fellow trustees to support his motion directing staff to investigate the feasibility of introducing a compulsory physical education program. “I think it would be a very good positive move for us to take,” he said. School board chairwoman Laurae McNally said Monday she’ll support Masi’s motion calling for a staff examination of the issue. But McNally said the proposal, which appears well intentioned, raises a lot of questions. “I’m going to support the motion to get a report from staff because I’ve got all sorts of questions,” she said. McNally said she would need to see a staff report before she’d be able to offer an informed comment on the proposal. SURREY — All Marisa BABIC Surrey high school Staff Reporter kids might be doing push-ups if trustee Reni Masi has his way. Masi said a recent study about obesity and links to diabetes and other diseases shows that the average school-aged child spends up to six hours of screen time per day. Eating supersize meals, sitting in front of computers at school and then later at home, combined with hours of TV watching, all contribute to the obesity epidemic. Masi said teens RENI MASI need more exercise. “They’re sedentary roughly six hours a day and diabetes is now becoming a young person’s disease — it never was — and the sedentary lifestyle has an affect on that,” Masi said. Concerned about the growing obesity trend and its associated health problems exacerbated by an inactive lifestyle, Masi is pushing to make

Atkinson will leave Kwantlen helm with pride after three years of progress SURREY – Changing Marisa BABIC the name of a post-secStaff Reporter ondary institution is easy. Changing attitudes is a lot harder. After three years of work transforming Kwantlen Polytechnic University from a college to a university, president and vicechancellor David Atkinson is leaving his post to join Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton. In reflecting on his term in office in an interview with the Now, Atkinson said he considers helping to foster a new mindset about the university as one of his major accomplishments. “Attitudes have changed,” he said. “People are beginning to believe that they are truly at a university and they don’t have to second-guess their legitimacy anymore.” There’s still a long way to go, he added quickly, but he’s proud of the strides made. He originally applied for the job because of the huge challenges it presented and said it has been deeply gratifying to lead the university during the sweeping changes. “It was that uniqueness that drew me here in the first place and the opportunity to lead the transformation of the institution was enormously appealing,” he said. Shaping a new culture as part of this transformation was both his toughest challenge and greatest satisfaction. “Whenever you create a new institution like this there is a huge cultural shift,” he said. Part of the challenge was to manage the expectations of younger faculty members who were impatient for change with those of senior faculty members who long taught

disciplines that were not “traditionally part of a university” and felt threatened by change. “It was a matter of getting people to row in the same boat.” Judging by his comments, Atkinson sounded fairly pleased DAVID ATKINSON with the way he has managed to steer that ship. While there are still differences “of attitudes and values,” Atkinson believes that mostly everyone at the university has managed to come together. Under his tenure, the university has expanded its educational offerings to 135 programs. In the past year, the Ministry of Education has approved more than a dozen new degree programs for Kwantlen. Although it is customary to wind down in the waning days of any job, Atkinson plans to keep busy right up until the end. “I’ll be here until June 30 and as I’ve told everybody, I’m never a lame duck,” he said. Pushing through two more degree programs for September 2011 with the ministry and collective bargaining with staff are just a couple of the key issues on his plate. “Sometimes when you’re leaving they give you a lot more freedom, but there’s some things I want to conclude, there are things that are underway that need to be finished. I’m going to do everything I can to make sure that happens,” he said. mbabic@thenownewspaper.com

There’s method to ‘AnyoneBut-Clark’ madness Can Christy Clark be stopped from winning the B.C. Liberal party leadership? That question must weigh heavy on the Keith BALDREY minds of her three opponents as the campaign heads into its final week. She is the perceived front-runner in the race (even the other candidates agree on that) and if her campaign’s own polling is accurate, she is tantalizingly close to becoming the next premier of B.C. She claims to have more than 40 per cent support when all ridings are counted. That translates to more than 3,400 “points” in the party’s weighted electoral system, which would put her about 850 points short of a majority victory (there are 8,500 points – 100 per riding – so a majority win is 4,251 points). If there is no first-count winner, of course, then the second choices of those who voted for candidates who are dropped from the ballot are then counted. If, say, Mike de Jong finishes last on the first count, those who voted for him would have their second choices redistributed among the other candidates. Presumably, Clark would pick up at least some of that support, which would push her even closer to victory. And that’s when things will become very interesting. After this second count, the third-place candidate would drop off the ballot. That means it’s likely that either George Abbott or Kevin Falcon would drop, and their pool of voters would have their second choices redistributed. Presumably, this would be a much larger number than voted for de Jong, which in turn increas-

ABC (Anyone But Clark) front in the party. Abbott and Falcon will likely try to send messages to each other’s supporters (and to de Jong’s as well) to make them the second choice, and not Clark. But the unique electoral system the party is using will make it more difficult for the ABC movement to pick up steam. The main impediment is the fact that everyone votes once and sits back and watches candidates drop and the second-choices get redistributed (and, in certain scenarios, third choices as well, but I’m not going to get into the intricacies of that). So there’s no chance for a dropped candidate to turn to his supporters and lead them over to another candidate, as can happen at delegated conventions. That sort of thing can build momentum for the candidate getting that kind of push, but it won’t happen here. But there is one aspect of this electoral system that may be the great equalizer and may be Abbott and/or Falcon’s best way of beating Clark: the vital need for the winning candidate to identify supporters, and then getting them to actually vote.

Clark can be tracking high in the polls, but if her team does not identify their supporters and get them to vote in sufficient numbers, the stage will be set for Abbott or Falcon to leapfrog her on the third count. But I’m not betting against her (or on her either; the secondchoice element makes things too unpredictable). In any event, the winner will be announced at 6:30 this Saturday evening (tune into Global, as we’ll be covering it live). Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global B.C. es the chances that Clark will get some support from this group. Despite their clashes in the campaign, it’s easy to see a lot of Abbott supporters naturally making Clark their second choice. After all, there is not a wide philosophical gap between the two candidates. On paper, it’s easy to say there’s no way Falcon supporters would list Clark as their second choice. The two candidates, after all, are polar opposites and represent the most conservative and liberal bases of the party. But since we’re talking about potentially thousands of voters, it’s not difficult to imagine a small percentage of Falcon supporters actually listing Clark as an attractive second option. That, combined with the second-choice support she gets from de Jong, should push her over the top. Well, maybe. Clark’s polling may be overstating her support, and it may well be true that very few people supporting other candidates end up making their second-best choice. But her front-runner status is why we are seeing, in the last weeks of the campaign, an attempt to forge a not-so-subtle

Nina’s campaign is plain silly

Nina right to fire back

The Editor, Re: “Surrey MP lambastes the Now for ‘cheap shot’ editorial,” the Now letters, Feb. 18. Surrey MP Nina Grewal’s response to your editorial criticizing her for wasting time with frivolous nonsense such as crusading against loud commercials on TV was predictably indignant, selfrighteous, and pedantic. They may be a bit of a pain, but since it’s unlikely that any of her constituents – seniors, disabled, whomever – haven’t learned how to use the volume control on a remote control clicker, then how can her private member’s bill be viewed as anything but silly?

The Editor, Re: “Surrey MP lambastes the Now for ‘cheap shot’ editorial,” the Now letters, Feb. 18. Hurray for MP Nina Grewal. It’s great to see such a hard-working politician sticking up for herself after such a scathing editorial full of contradictions. The Now would have you believe that her expenses were too high while at the same time they complain that she has to do more to sell Canada abroad? Huh? I believe I read in this very publication that Grewal accompanied the prime minister on business trips to India selling Canada. Did that slip the Now’s mind? We deserve better from our local newspaper.

MP personifies waste

The Editor, Re: “Drop ridiculous grab for attention, Nina,” the Now, Feb. 15. Nina Grewal’s introduction of a bill to make the volume of TV commercials consistent with the program is exactly the type of government waste that has to stop, unless this seems to be a priority in her riding and we do not have any other pressing issue to be concerned about. Why would anybody vote for this kind of representation in Ottawa? This should serve as a large red flag as to who to vote for in the next election.

Vic Hry, Surrey

At least Nina’s trying The Editor, Re: “Drop ridiculous grab for attention, Nina,” the Now, Feb. 15. Nina Grewal is, as you note, a backbencher, which is about the least important member of Parliament that you can be. Your votes are pretty much determined by party politics and if you are lucky, you might even be asked to sit on any number of meaningless committees with far less significance to Canada. To actually feel useful there is

very little a backbencher can do, except pick up on something like a bill to ensure commercials do not exceed program audio levels by the incredible amount they do. Without this issue, Nina could be just another deadhead in Ottawa. Good for her for trying to find something that benefits Canadians, no matter how insignificant the Now considers it to be.

Letters

The Editor, Re: “Drop ridiculous grab for attention, Nina,” the Now, Feb. 15. Though I agree with Nina Grewal’s noise level bill, I would like her to tell us what bills she has sponsored and seen passed in Parliament – a long list of very timely and relevant bills would be nice. She might have sent me something in the flyers she mails, but lately have been throwing them away unread.

Bush should be arrested

The Editor, As an American citizen and Canadian permanent resident, I say that George W. Bush should be arrested as a war criminal if he sets foot into Canada. The facts are indisputable. He knowingly lied about weapons of mass destruction to start a war in Iraq. He admittedly tortured prisoners against all international treaties. The results of his policies are 100,000 dead in Iraq, a failed war in Afghanistan, and an Iran that has become free to spread radicalism without the containment of a hostile Iraq. If Bush comes to Surrey, he should be given an ongoing ticket to the Hague to stand trial.

SURREY — Chanel-clad Marisa BABIC fashion editors who drape Staff reporter themselves over those little gilt chairs at the shows might want to jot the name Earl Mabaquaio into their notebooks. The up-and-coming young designer, still a student, made a splash during Montreal Fashion Week (Feb. 7-10). Mabaquaio, a third-year design student at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, impressed the judges of the 2011 TELIO Design Competition with his creation and won top spot in “Canada’s Breakthrough Designer” category. “I feel very honoured to have been chosen for it,” Mabaquaio said modestly during an interview with the Now. The competition, hosted by the Quebecbased textile company and aimed at encouraging the development of Canadian designers, is open to third- and fourth-year design students. Aspiring fashion designers from 20 fashion design schools across Canada competed for scholarships totalling $10,000 by creating a unique design based on a theme chosen by the textile company. Aside from the accolades, Mabaquaio also won a $3,500 scholarship. After poring over a mass of submitted fashion illustrations, the judges pare them down to a couple dozen of the best entries and these students then advance to compete with fabric and scissors. The competition was fierce. Mabaquaio, 23, said an early sneak peek to size up the talent of the other designers based on their illustrations left him plagued with selfdoubt, feeling out of his league. “I was just in awe that I would be competing alongside the most talented designers in my generation of students from all different schools and different provinces,” he said. This year’s design students were asked to create a garment based on the theme “Great Canadian North,” and the judges were look-

Mabaquaio’s design is a silver and blue sequined dress with loose, cap-style sleeves and a decidedly icy, glacial look. The judges obviously agreed that its deceptively simple lines but complex construction captured the spirit of the Great Canadian North for the 21st century. “It’s so important to design for your woman now and for the woman of tomorrow,” he said, explaining his preference for sleek, modern style. “I went for a really simple silhouette and a really simple garment.” As every couturier knows, pulling off the simple stunningly is a lot harder than embellishing a garment with frou-frou to create

faux style. “To the untrained eye, it’s just another dress. But to all the fashion people who know garment construction and who have been following fashion for a long time, they know it’s difficult,” he notes. Mabaquaio admits he was a bit squeamish about working with sequins. Fussy glittery gowns often run the risk of looking garish or costume-y, but he’s satisfied that he was able to capture elegance. Originally, Mabaquaio planned to go to medical school but changed his mind along the way. “I was planning to go into medicine but then I just felt I needed to feed a creative spirit,” he said. His ultimate goal is to own his own design company that would allow him to “push forward my vision.” “That’s the ultimate dream. I don’t know when that’s going to happen but I’m definitely working on it.” mbabic@thenownewspaper.com

Rice sure is nice, but quinoa is even better OnCooking

Thanks to proteinheavy and low-carb diets, the awareness of carbohydrate levels is very prevalent in our society. However, starches are making their way back to Chef our dinner tables. DEZ Pasta, potatoes and rice aren’t all bad, but let’s compare them to quinoa. Ask any dietician and they will most likely tell you that our diets should include a balanced combination of almost all foods — all foods in moderation, that is. White rice grains are less nutritious because the milling process strips the grain of the bran. Brown rice has approximately the same

number of calories and carbohydrates as white rice. The difference is, brown rice has just the outer husk removed from the rice grain, whereas white rice has the husk and the bran removed. If eating white rice is not a concern for you, then there are a number to choose from: long-grain, short-grain, basmati, jasmine, etc. Out of all of these options, I normally choose basmati for my busy lifestyle. It cooks the fastest; once the water comes to a boil, cover and simmer for 10 to 12 minutes and then serve. It is very fragrant and the delicate grains are a compliment to many rice recipes. Short-grain rice is very popular with sushi making. It is mixed with a brine to aid in the binding qualities needed for shaping

and to give it the distinct sushi rice flavour. For my sushi rice, I dissolve one tablespoon of salt and one-quarter cup of sugar into one-third of a cup of rice vinegar, over medium heat. This will make enough to season approximately three cups dry shortgrain rice, cooked. Wild rice is a grain that is actually classified as a “grass.” When compared to cooked brown and white rice, it offers lower calories, lower carbohydrates and higher protein. Quinoa (pronounced “keen-wah”) is also known as Inca rice, but it’s really a seed, not a grain. It comes from broadleaf plants originally native to the Inca people of South America. It has a somewhat similar appearance to couscous-shaped pasta. Quinoa

is superior to other grains because it is a complete protein, containing a balanced set of essential amino acids. It offers similar protein and carbohydrate levels as wild rice, a similar calorie count as white or brown rice, but with a higher natural fat content and a nutty flavour. Quinoa can be cooked in the same manner as rice, or, for more texture, cooked without a lid. We sauté the dry grains in olive oil and garlic before adding liquid, and then we stir occasionally, without a lid, until all the liquid is absorbed and evaporated. If you are tired of serving rice, this makes for a great alternative. Chef Dez is a food columnist, culinary instructor and cooking show performer. Visit him online at www.chefdez.com.

The basic treatment for constipation is to increase dietary fiber and water consumption. When this is not enough, we address the underlying cause of constipation, an overstressed and under-functioning bowel. To reduce stress on the digestive tract and restore normal bowel function, we avoid adverse foods reactions with either a hypoallergenic diet or by food allergy testing and utilize a combination of supplemental fibers and nutritional stool softeners. For constipation that does not respond to these dietary and nutritional treatments, we restore normal bowel function with acupuncture, more aggressive digestive support and colon hydrotherapy. Colon Hydrotherapy involves flushing the colon with sterilized filtered water which results in the removal of accumulated toxins and stimulation of bowel activity.

Apple Auto Glass meets industry-leading standards for quality work and customer service, and trained technicians will ensure your auto glass is safely replaced.

Do I need to go to ICBC to get a glass claim?

604-575-7494 Do I need a Power of Attorney? Every adult should have Power of Attorney. In BC, a Power of Attorney is a document that allows you to authorize another individual to make legal and financial decisions on your behalf. It is extremely important to have Power of Attorney: if both you and your spouse (or any two individuals) are on the title to your property, in order to sell or refinance the property you need the signatures of both parties. You cannot sign on your spouse’s behalf unless you have a Power of Attorney. In order to grant a Power of Attorney to someone, you need to have the mental capacity to do so. If that capacity fails, due to the accident or illness, you will need to apply for a committeeship. For that you will need a lawyer and to apply to the court to have someone appointed. This procedure takes time and will cost several thousand dollars. A Power of Attorney is made once and it is valid for a lifetime; it is a very inexpensive reassurance that no matter what, somebody will be there to help you. For more questions about Power of Attorney, please contact me directly.

Q A

How long do dentures last? This is a very common question, and the answer depends on many things. If the dentures are worn in your pocket, they will probably last forever, however dentures are and were meant to be worn in the mouth. The best thing denture wearers can do if their denture is more than 3 years old and it has not been looked at by a dental professional, is to call our office. I’d be happy to see you and give you some complimentary advice. Don’t wait until you feel like something is wrong - that’s how irreversible damage to the structure that supports the denture can occur, and that is exactly what we would like to prevent. Call us today for your complimentary consultation.

604-536-6414

Is water good for you? “Of course?” Well, sort of. Water should have a pH of 8; and a molecular structure of 3-6. If not, water carries contaminants and toxins AND is too big to cross a the cellular membrane. It puts more stress on the liver (to detox) and the kidneys (to eliminate). For instance, fluoride and chloride are toxic and cause problems to your teeth and every system in your body. An analysis of 170 different varieties of bottled water revealed: 20% of the companies wouldn’t answer where the water came from; 32% wouldn’t disclose information on any water treatment or purity of water; 18% don’t reveal where the water is from. The Environmental Working Group in 2009 revealed 38 contaminants in bottled water, with each of 10 tested brands containing an average of 8 chemicals, including: DBPs (disinfetnbyproducts), Industrial Chemicals, Caffeine, Tylenol, Nitrate, Arsenic and Bacteria. The water bottle plastics contain a variety of harmful chemicals that can leach into the water: Cancer-causing PFOAs, PBDEs (flame retardant chemicals (reproductive/thyroid issues)), Reproductive toxins (phthalates) and BPAs (interferes with endocrine systems, i.e. estrogens). The author of the initial book published in the 1960s claiming that we should drink 8 cups of water per day – acknowledged that it was an idea – NOT science based.Yet, subsequently, it was presented as a scientific fact. FALSE!!! Let’s think: we are supposed to be 78-82% water - what is the % of water in fruits and vegetables. Think before you drink.

What can Dynamic Blood Analysis tell me regarding my state of health?

Dynamic Blood Analysis consists of analyzing the blood as both a live and dried sample using a specialized microscope. Since the blood circulates throughout every cell of our being, it provides us with a clear picture of the state of physical and mental/emotional health.

Dynamic Blood Analysis can reveal: • Cell damage caused by free radicals • Cell size and shape abnormalities from immune disorders • Liver, bowel or other organ toxicity • Heavy metal toxicity • Nutritional deficiencies/excesses •Vitamin/Mineral deficiencies • Poor circulation, oxygen levels and abnormal blood clotting • Fatigue & dehydration and their consequences on the body • Presence of Candida/Yeast/Fungi • Bacterial or Parasitic Infections • Allergies • Hormonal imbalances • Early warning detection of degenerative disease factors We are often unsure of what to take or do in order to feel better. Dynamic Blood Analysis allows your body to reveal exactly what is needed right now, whether it be dietary adjustments, lifestyle changes, key supplements and remedies, or specific therapies.

Eagles draw first-round date with Express

Sports

Here we go Michael BOOTH again. Sports Editor The Surrey Eagles closed out the B.C. Hockey League’s regular season Saturday and immediately began preparing for their opening playoff series against a familiar foe — the Coquitlam Express. Surrey played 22 of their 60 league games — more than one third of the schedule despite playing in a 16-team league — against Coquitlam and Langley, just for the right to play the Express at least four more times. It marks the third straight season the Eagles have a familiar playoff opponent after facing Langley in each of the last two seasons. “It’s probably the best case for us in terms of travel and, of course, there’s familiarity as well,” said Eagles coach Matt Erhart. “We’ve played them 12 times plus two exhibition games so that’s 14 games already and we could end up playing them 21 times (if the series goes the full seven games). Last year it was Langley we played 12 times plus six more in the playoffs. “So yeah, we know them pretty well. They’re a talented team offensively and they can take the one opportunity you might give them and make you pay for it.” The Eagles and Express play the first two games of the series Friday (Feb. 25) and Saturday at South Surrey Arena before the action shifts to Coquitlam for Game 3 Monday. Surrey closed out the regular season by splitting a home-and-home set with Coquitlam before wrapping things up with a 4-1 loss to Salmon Arm on home ice Saturday. The visiting Silverbacks are one of the top teams jockeying for position in the BCHL’s Interior Conference while the Eagles had already sewn up second place in the Coastal Conference and the fans were treated to an entertaining

Surrey Eagles forward Colton Mackie (14) cuts to his left to avoid a check from Salmon Arm’s Brett Knowles in B.C. Hockey League action Saturday at South Surrey Arena. The Eagles closed out the regular season with a 4-1 loss to Salmon Arm and immediately began preparations for their first❚PHOTO/Garrett James — BCHL round playoff series against Coquitlam beginning Friday. contest. Surrey outshot the ’Backs 13-8 in the opening frame before Salmon Arm rallied with a strong second period to take a 2-1 lead. The game turned in the middle of the third period when Salmon Arm struck for two goals 35 seconds apart to effectively put the matter out of reach. “It was a really good hockey game but, unfortunately, it was a loss,” Erhart said. “It was 2-1 in the third period and we made one turnover in the neutral zone and they got an odd-man rush to make it 31. The next shift pushed it into their end because we had nothing to lose and a couple of guys got caught deep, which gave them another

odd-man rush and they scored on that. “It was a really good thing to happen right before the playoffs because it shows how one little turnover might be the difference in a game.” Brad McGowan scored the lone Surrey goal to wind up tied for second in the BCHL scoring derby with 36 goals and 89 points. Surrey opened the week with a two-game set against Coquitlam. Surrey took the opener Wednesday 7-3 on home ice before dropping the rematch 7-4 Friday in Coquitlam. Robert Lindores scored a pair of goals in the Surrey win. Erhart used Friday’s road game

as an opportunity to rest some key personnel, icing a team of just 15 skaters and with backup goalie Andrew Hunt between the pipes. “It was a good opportunity for some guys to get some extra ice time,” Erhart said, “but that extra ice time may have hurt us because some guys made some mistakes defensively in some situations. “They scored in the first minute of the game and it seemed like we were playing catch-up for the rest of the night. It was just one of those games where it seemed like every third or fourth shot went in. It was pretty sloppy to say the least.” McGowan, Riley Sweeney, Scott Holm and Brandon Morley provided the goals for Surrey in the loss.

❚ SPORTS ❚SENIOR BOYS BASKETBALL

Dragons slay Cougars to grab fifth seed in Valley tourney The Fleetwood Park Michael BOOTH Dragons turned the Sports Editor tables on rival Enver Creek, upending the previously undefeated Cougars 91-83 in the Fraser Valley Central Zone playoff final Friday night at the home of the big cats. The win marked a 31-point turnaround for the Dragons after they fell 72-49 to eighth-ranked Enver in league play on Feb. 8. “Our guys played much better in that game than we did here (two weeks ago),” said Fleetwood coach Mike Sweeney. “We were pretty tight playing at home in front of our crowd but we were much better Friday. It’s tough to play a team three times and beat them every time. There were a lot of things that we didn’t do very well against

them earlier that we tried to take care of better in the playoffs and we were able to do that.” Harp Grewal scored 33 points in Friday’s final to secure MVP honours. The Dragons were helped in their quest by the absence of Cougars big man Rajan Rai, who is out of the lineup indefinitely following an emergency appendectomy. The Cougars were further hampered by whistle-happy officiating that repeatedly sent Dragons to the free throw line. “Missing Rajan hurt us and of course 54 fouls doesn’t help,” Enver coach Rick Inrig said tersely. “At the end I had just one starter left on the floor. Fleetwood Park played well but we came back from 17 points down before Parvez (Jhaj) and

Vikash (Pillai) fouled out. Marc (Mincielli) was the only starter left on the floor.” The Dragons are now seeded fifth in the Fraser Valley tournament that begins with a single game elimination round on Friday (Feb. 25). The loss drops Enver down to the eighth seed. Meanwhile, the Tamanawis Wildcats avenged their only loss in league play by beating White Rock Christian 80-63 in the Valley West zone final on Friday. The Wildcats finished first in the West but still had something to prove against the perennial powerhouse from South Surrey. Shooting guard Gagan Sahota led the charge with 23 points while point guard Manny Dulay dished out 13 assists to help the Tamanawis cause.

“I was pleasantly surprised by my team’s intensity in those three games,” said Tamanawis coach Surinder Grewal. “They’ve come ready to play and guys are stepping up for us. I think they realized the early success we had was based on talent and talent alone. The loss to White Rock really woke them up and showed them that we can’t just rely on talent alone.” The Wildcats are seeded fourth for the Valley tourney while White Rock has the sixth seed. Other schools making the cut include Seaquam (11th seed), Clayton Heights (14), North Delta (19), Sullivan Heights (20), Queen Elizabeth (22), Kwantlen Park (26), L.A. Matheson (27), Princess Margaret (29), Fraser Heights (30), Earl Marriott (31) and Guildford Park (32).

For most drivers, filling up at the pump is an automatic routine. But considering that cars are typically one of our largest investments, it’s important to remember that building good habits for the way we take care of them can mean the difference between trouble-free driving and costly repairs. According to a recent Angus Reid survey, one in four Canadians asked don’t keep up with the recommended maintenance schedule for their vehicles and one in three aren’t seeking the correct grade of fuel as recommended by their vehicle’s manufacturer. While most engines will work regardless of the fuel grade or quality, a big part of engine maintenance is making sure you select the right type of gasoline for your vehicle. And ensuring your fuel has enough cleaning agents is a great head start to protecting your engine.

❚ Cleaning Agents The enemy of engine efficiency is engine “gunk,” or harmful carbon deposits left behind on intake valves and fuel injectors. This gunk acts like a sponge, absorbing and trapping gasoline. Choosing a gasoline for your vehicle is like choosing a meal for your body — healthy habits can make a difference. Yet over half of Canadians surveyed don’t take any action to protect or clean their engines from the build-up of harmful carbon deposits. Fortunately, preventing engine gunk is easy. For example, all Shell nitrogen enriched gasolines are designed to protect your engine from gunk and even help clean engine gunk left by lower-quality gasolines.

Good habits at the pump help your vehicle

❚ Top Tier-certified Gasoline No matter what octane level is required for your vehicle, be certain you’re using a high-quality gasoline that meets Top Tier gasoline standards. Industry research confirms that a clean engine can result in better fuel efficiency, reduced emissions and overall optimal engine performance.

❚FUEL ECONOMY

❚ Octane You probably associate octane with the number you see at the pumps, but the technical explanation for octane is the measure of the fuel’s ability to resist “engine knock.” If you use a lower octane rating in an engine designed to use higher octane fuel, engine knocking might occur, causing the car to shudder and lose performance. If your vehicle’s engine is designed to run on regular grade unleaded gasoline, that’s all it should require. However, using octane above the recommended level won’t harm the engine. If you’re experiencing engine knocking in an older car that recommends low octane, using a higher octane grade may help correct the problem. If you have a performance or luxury vehicle that requires a higher octane level, using that specified rating will help achieve optimal engine performance.
