Councillor: vandalism linked to tree issue WHITE ROCK – If a Ted COLLEY tree doesn’t fall in White Staff Reporter Rock, do a councillor’s tires get slashed? Maybe. Coun. Helen Fathers believes someone vandalized two of her family’s cars Friday night because she is against cutting down several trees on Royal Avenue to improve the view for some residents there. Fathers said the vandal, or vandals, struck sometime between 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Friday. Two vehicles were sprayed with paint and three tires – two on Fathers’ pickup and one on the family sedan – were slashed. Fathers conceded she has no proof the attack is linked to the tree issue, but said she can’t think of any other reason for someone to do this. “The police have told me it was targetted. There was no other vandalism on our street, so I guess one could make that link, yeah.” A number of residents have applied to have three trees on city land in the 15100block of Royal Avenue cut down because they block their view of the bay. Other nearby residents have opposed the idea, but in January, city council voted to allow the cutting. The council members present – both Fathers and Mayor Catherine Ferguson were absent – voted unanimously to have the trees removed in the stated belief that there is “an obligation on the part of the city to preserve what people had when they came here.” The policy states simply that applications to remove trees that block views “may be considered.” Fathers said the January decision was ill conceived because council failed to give proper consideration to the opposing view. “The other side of the story was never properly presented,” Fathers said. “Under our tree management policy, we

SURREY – A woman in her mid-20s was pulled from the water by the RCMP dive team after her car crashed through a barrier and into the Serpentine River in South Surrey Monday morning. The crash happened at about 9:50 a.m. The woman was the only occupant of the vehicle, a dark-coloured newer Honda Civic, according to police. She was driving southbound in the 4600-block of King George Boulevard when the accident happened. The B.C. RCMP Underwater Recovery Team pulled her from the submerged car and tried to revive her before she was taken by air ambulance to hospital. Her condition was not known by press time. Police are still investigating the exact cause of the crash and were not able to confirm early reports that she had been trying to pass another vehicle when she lost control of the car. Speed may have been a factor though. Anyone with information on the crash who has not yet spoken to police is asked to contact RCMP Deas Island Traffic Services at 604946-2184.

Educators hope for best from Clark SURREY – Surrey school district Ted COLLEY officials and the city’s teachers’ union Staff Reporter are waiting to see what difference – if any – Christy Clark’s ascension to the premier’s office will make in the education budget. Unlike the vast majority of B.C. school districts where enrolment is falling, Surrey’s continues to grow, grow at a rate that easily outstrips the money available to build new schools and pay enough teachers. “I am very interested in the fact that she made family the top priority in her platform,” school board chair Laurae McNally said Monday. “There’s nowhere else in B.C. where enrolment is growing like it is in Surrey. Between 800 and 1,000 people are moving into Surrey every month and 30 per cent of them are under 19 years of age,” McNally said. “You want young families? We got ’em.” McNally said she hopes that growth will spur Clark to authorize more money for building schools here.

She acknowledged that Clark, as education minister, was largely unmoved by requests for better funding, but hopes perhaps things will be different this time around. McNally isn’t the only one anxious to see what Clark has up her sleeve. Surrey Teachers’ Association president Denise Moffatt is hanging her hopes on a new relationship with Clark, who was less than friendly to the teachers’ union as minister. “It’s no secret that the historical relationship between Ms. Clark and the BCTF has been strained, but she has said she wants change. We’re hopeful that signals a new direction,” Moffatt said. She said Clark has to recognize Surrey needs more from Victoria in both operating and capital funding to keep teachers employed in the district and so that new schools can be built. “It’s incumbent on Ms. Clark to listen to those concerns. We hope she’s going to make Surrey a priority.”

Clark cleaned up in Surrey SURREY – Premier designate Christy Tom ZYTARUK Clark did well in Surrey and North Delta Staff Reporter in Saturday’s Liberal leadership race, beating local candidate Kevin Falcon soundly in all three ballots. It began as a four-way race between Clark, SurreyCloverdale MLA Falcon, and his Liberal caucus colleagues George Abbott and Mike de Jong. The latter was knocked out after the first ballot, and Abbott after the second. Of our nine local ridings, Clark won the first ballot in Delta North, Surrey-Newton, Surrey-Green Timbers, Surrey-Whalley and Surrey-Panorama – all ridings that elected NDP MLAs, with the exception of SurreyPanorama, held by Liberal MLA Stephanie Cadieux, who endorsed Falcon in the race. Falcon won in his hometown Surrey-Cloverdale as well as Surrey Fleetwood and Surrey-Tynehead. Abbott led in Surrey-White Rock on the first ballot, endorsed by veteran Liberal MLA Gordon Hogg, the MLA for that riding. With de Jong out of the race on the second ballot, Clark again dominated the local field, winning in Delta North, Surrey-Fleetwood, Surrey-Green Timbers, Surrey-Newton, Surrey-Panorama and Surrey-Whalley, with Falcon hanging onto Surrey-Cloverdale and Surrey-Tynehead, and Abbott still leading in Surrey-White Rock. Abbott then dropped out, leaving Clark and Falcon to battle it out in the third and final ballot. Not much changed there, except that Clark gained Surrey-White Rock. Falcon, a star minister in former premier Gordon Campbell’s cabinet, was not available for comment on Monday. Liberal party spokesman Russell Lolacher said Falcon was “not doing any media” at press time and is spending time with his family. Clark will be B.C.’s 35th premier and the second woman, after former Surrey-Newton Socred Rita Johnston, to hold that office in this province. She has not been elected as an MLA. It’s speculated she might run in Campbell’s Vancouver riding if he decides not to run again. Hogg dispelled rumours he won’t be running again, which would open Surrey-White Rock for her. “I have not said I am not running,” Hogg told the Now on Monday. Clark’s win, he noted, represented a “large and important statement” from the party’s membership that the party “needs to separate from what the Campbell legacy was.” “Across all of Surrey, Christy did very well.” Clark did, however, serve as a cabinet minister in Campbell’s government as well as deputy premier, before leaving provincial politics to become a radio show host for CKNW. Surrey-Whalley NDP MLA Bruce Ralston said he was surprised Clark won. He thought Falcon would’ve. It will be a big challenge for her to pull the Liberal caucus together, he noted. During the leadership race, 21 Liberal MLAs had endorsed Abbott and 20, Falcon. None endorsed Clark. During the leadership race Clark ran on a “family first” platform. During her time with the Campbell government, Clark served as minister of education and minister of children and families. Under the latter, Ralston recalled, she presided over a “drastic” 40 per cent budget cut and chalked up a “disastrous” record as minister of education. “She was very confrontational,” Ralston said. “She has a record that isn’t anything to brag about, as far as we’re concerned.” Surrey-Newton NDP MLA Harry Bains said she’s being called “Bill Vander Zalm in a skirt.” “That’s what I heard on the street,” he said. “There’s a reason why they (Liberal MLAs) didn’t support her. She’s considered to be not a team player by many of those.”

SURREY – Surrey school trustees showered the Relate Church with praise at Thursday’s school board meeting. Trustees acknowledged the church for “adopting” four schools to help through a variety of programs throughout the year. Members of the congregation help students and their families from Old Yale Road, Forsyth Road, Hjorth Road and K.B. Woodward elementaries. Over the past two years, they have distributed 2,300 boxes of toys to families during the holiday season and made up and delivered 160 Christmas hampers. They also distributed 80 summer hampers in June. As well, volunteers knitted 1,000 mittens, scarves and hats and baked 2,400 cookies for students and their families. – The Now

DELTA – Former longtime Delta school trustee Caroline Porter has passed away. Porter was 67 when she died Feb. 15. Born in Armagh, Northern Ireland, Porter immigrated to Canada in 1967. She served on the Delta school board from 1981 until she retired in 1993, spending nine of those years as chairperson. Porter, who raised her four children while working as a registered nurse and manager at Richmond Hospital, helped guide the school district though a period of student growth, labour unrest, fiscal restraint and education reform. A memorial service took place on Feb. 22 in Richmond. – The Optimist

SURREY – For the second time in a month a police car has struck a pedestrian in Surrey. An unmarked Surrey RCMP SUV that was making a left turn on a green light at 104th Avenue and 154th Street hit a 21-year-old Langley man early Friday morning. “He was treated and released (from hospital) very quickly,” Sgt. Drew Grainger said. The driver was a traffic cop. This case is being investigated in-house. The victim was using a crosswalk, Grainger said. Meanwhile, Abbotsford Police expect to release in about a month the results of their investigation into a Jan. 31 crash where a Surrey Mountie hit and killed an 18-year-old woman on King George Boulevard in Whalley. – Tom Zytaruk

But for Delta students Logan Bragg and Christian Deane, the words roll off the tongue. The Grade 7 boys have teamed up on a science project that will be among those showcased at Delta school district’s Science Fair hosted at Scottsdale Mall on March 9. The theme of this year’s “Minds on Discovery” Delta Science Fair is the environment. The team’s objective was to produce a biogas as an alternative to fossil fuels in order to help reduce the advance of global warming. The lads admit they were a bit surprised with the successful results of their experiment. “It was an amazing project,” said Logan, 12. “We were trying to demonstrate how we could produce biogas from basically putting different types of biomass like carrots and bananas into a bottle with water and manure and we actually managed it,” he explained. “I thought it would produce a little bit of gas but I didn’t think we could

The boys tracked the progress of their project over several days, carefully recording data and snapping pictures along the way. They discovered that heat accelerated the decom-

position process, which was promoted by the bacteria in the manure. One of the balloons placed atop the bottles filled with the biomass was puffed up at its biggest on Day 7 of the experiment at a temperature of 21C. Christian refers to a popular movie to help explain the potential of their concept. He recounted a segment in Back to the Future 3, when the professor goes forward in time and runs out of fuel but then scoops some bananas out of a compost bin and stuffs them into the fuel tank and the car’s magically re-fueled. “That’s what we’re thinking could possibly happen in the future by using this process, but much quicker by heating it to much higher temperatures.” The team’s project was chosen as one of the best at Gray Elementary, earning the boys the right to advance to the district fair. Principal Jeff McCallum said he’s very impressed with the calibre of the project. “We’re pretty proud of these guys.” Winners of the Science Fair will advance to the Regional Science Fair and those winners will win a trip to the Canada Wide Science Fair slated for May in Toronto. mbabic@thenownewspaper.com

Surrey man walks 90km in Iraq to help children orphaned by war

To reduce potential risks, the team walked alongside thousands of Shiite Iraqis who were walking that same stretch of highway on a religious pilgrimage. Al-Hassani said Canadian officials in the country also maintained contact with the walkers, helping to ensure their safety. “To be honest we felt really, really safe,” he said. Even though there were a few bombings, Al-Hassani said none of the targets were close enough for them to hear the blasts. Merging with the masses didn’t mean that their message was lost though. AlHassani said the team received plenty of media attention, especially after news agency Reuters picked up their story and other media outlets in the region piled on. “We got lots of media attention, that’s what made me nervous,” he said with a laugh, alluding to the shaky start. Al-Hassani, one of the founders of Child Aid International, believes the team accomplished its goal, raising awareness about the plight of children orphaned by war and reaching their fundraising target of $200,000. SURREY – Nearly Marisa BABIC everybody on the team Staff Reporter had sore feet and blisters, but they made it. Surrey resident Nouri Al-Hassani and his team completed a 90-kilometre walk along a dodgy stretch of highway in Iraq aimed at raising funds through Child Aid International to help Iraqi children orphaned by war. Al-Hassani, 41, was a member of the “Walk for Life” team that included three other Canadian men and two American women who made the three-day trek from Najaf to Karbala in southern Iraq in January. Al-Hassani, who fled his native Iraq in 1991, stayed on for a while after the walk to catch up with friends and family and only recently returned back home to Surrey. “It was an amazing experience.” Despite training for the walk, AlHassani admits the journey was a tougher test of endurance than he had anticipated it would be. “I thought 90 K was going to be easy to walk in three days,” he said. The walk got off to a slow start. “The first day we didn’t even reach 20 K,” which meant that on the second and final day of the walk, when pretty much everybody’s strength was starting to wane, they had push themselves all the harder to

Liberal party’s decision to adopt a weighted voting system for choosing their next leader was supposed to Keith BALDREY help candidates such as George Abbott, but the system showed the wide appeal of Christy Clark more than anything. Clark won the leadership by a narrow margin – 52 per cent versus 48 per cent – over Kevin Falcon, but a riding-by-riding analysis of the vote shows her victory was not quite as narrow as that result would indicate. The weighted voting system assigned every riding 100 points, which meant all ridings counted the same no matter how many party members voted in the riding. The 223 members in VancouverHastings had as much clout as the 3,210 members in Surrey-Newton. One thing that is quickly apparent from a look at a riding-by-riding breakdown is how well Clark did in NDP territory. On the final count, Clark won every NDP-held riding except two. In many cases, her lead over Falcon was substantial enough to give her almost twice the points from the riding as went to Falcon. She took almost 59 per cent of the points in NDP ridings, compared to Falcon’s 42 per cent. That accounted for almost half of her overall point total. She also beat Falcon in the suburbs of Metro Vancouver (eight ridings to six on the final count), the Interior and North (12 to eight), Vancouver (eight to three), Surrey (five to three) and Vancouver Island (12 to two). She even narrowly took more ridings than Falcon in the Fraser Valley and the Okanagan. Clark also bested Falcon in ridings that saw large sign-ups of

––– Christy Clark’s main message during her successful campaign was her desire to bring real change to the B.C. Liberal government. So how does that translate into

changes at the cabinet table? Because she had the support of only one MLA – Harry Bloy – Clark doesn’t really owe many people any favours. But the political reality of keeping her coalition party together means she must keep key supporters of rival Kevin Falcon in the fold. So don’t expect cabinet stalwarts such as Falcon, Rich Coleman, Pat Bell, Shirley Bond, Barry Penner or George Abbott to form an exodus from the head table. But I’m not so sure certain others – notably Kevin Krueger and perhaps Iain Black, Murray Coell, Ida Chong, Randy Hawes and even Colin Hansen – should feel totally secure in their posts. To demonstrate real change, Clark is going to have to bring in some new faces. And that means some current ministers have to pay the ultimate price. Her real challenge, however, is dealing with two independent MLAs – Bill Bennett and Blair Lekstrom – who left the B.C. Liberal caucus on unhappy terms. Clark has been criticized as being a threat to party unity and of being the kind of leader who could wreck the so-called free enterprise

coalition. Bringing Bennett and Lekstrom back into caucus – perhaps not cabinet – would go a long way to show that maintaining party unity is indeed something she is capable of. The night of her leadership win, all the MLAs joined her on the stage in a show of at least public unity. Watching from the floor was Bennett – who seems ready to rejoin his colleagues. members. In ridings with more than 1,000 voters, she came out on top by a margin of seven to five over Falcon. Clark’s victory got an early push from the supporters of Mike de Jong, almost half of whom picked her as their second choice. On the final count, she got second-choice support from about one-third of those who backed George Abbott. In other words, Clark’s support was fairly widespread (though not necessarily that deep) and not confined to one particular area of the province. There were only a couple of areas (the west side of Vancouver, the odd pocket in the Interior) where she failed to attract much support. The breadth of her support may bode well for her when she gets around to calling a general election. Clark’s victory explodes the myth that, among B.C. Liberal voters, she was strong only in urban or suburban regions.

Skate park waste of cash The Editor, Re: “Surrey’s $1.34M covered youth park will be first of its kind in B.C.,” the Now’s online edition. Upon reading your article about the building of the first covered skate park in Surrey located at Tom Binnie Park, I thought this

amount ($1.34M) to build it is a complete waste of money. Why isn’t this money being used to help homeless people or another good cause? The location is in Whalley, near the Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre and Mayor Dianne Watts seems to be in favour of it. Perhaps Watts should go around to all the other skate parks in Surrey and see how they mostly sit empty. This is because the skate parks are not for the youth to enjoy, they cannot call it a place to hang out, somewhere they feel comfortable. Why? It is because they are not allowed to paint graffiti there, something all of the other municipalities and cities allow. If Watts would care to observe other skate parks around the other cities and communities, she would find them quite popular in comparison.

If the skate parks are supposed to be for the youth and that particular culture, then the youth should be allowed to paint there. I think the city should be more concerned with graffiti all over the rest of Surrey and not in the skate parks where, perhaps, it belongs.

Give it a rest, non-smokers The Editor, Re: “Bus stop ban on smokes is news to Martin,” the Now, Feb. 25. Oh, please – I am so tired of reformed smokers who are determined to govern the lives of the wicked or misguided people who still smoke. I truly do understand that smoke wafting into non-smokers’ homes – or into their faces – is unpleasant, not to mention unhealthy. But with all due respect, when you build your home with windows and doors less than 7.5 metres from a bus stop (or the street), why wouldn’t you reasonably expect some nuisances? I was a heavy smoker for decades and am very happy to say I quit about 15 years ago. However, not once did I ever blow smoke in people’s faces, or throw cigarette butts to the ground

to litter the countryside. Nor do I believe either is common these days. This is supposed to be a free country and under conditions where a non-smoker is unable to escape someone else’s thoughtless smoke, surely a simple “Please either move away from me with your cigarette,” or “Put it out,” would suffice. There are already lots of smoking rules, laws and bans. We have enough non-enforceable laws already in place. Non-smokers, give it a rest.

The Editor, As a concerned resident of Cloverdale, I am adamantly opposed to the proposed building of a cellphone tower on 168th Street and 66th Avenue. My husband and I cannot believe the City of Surrey would consider allowing the proposed construction of this tower, when it will be right next door to an Alzheimer’s facility, not to mention, the surrounding homes, Northview golf course and Cloverdale Athletic Park. I have done my research and am fully aware of the potential for severe health consequences that this tower would bring upon our community, as well as losses of property values. I ask other concerned citizens to please contact their MLAs and Mayor Dianne Watts as soon as possible – these towers have a way getting approved and built very quickly.

A sure sign of Bollwitt’s reach is her Miss 604 account on Twitter, which boats more than 19,300 followers — many more than Premier-elect Christy Clark’s 3,362, for example, CTV anchor Tamara Taggart’s 6,696 and ex-Canuck Trevor Linden’s 11,869 (all numbers as of Monday, Feb. 28). She even bests the Vancouver Sun’s 17,201 followers and the 11,504 claimed by local newsies’ go-to radio station, CKNW. She uses Twitter to effectively drive online traffic back to her Miss 604 blog site. “There’s no real strategy with it, and I don’t ask people to follow me (on Twitter),” Bollwitt said. I don’t do promotions where someone has to follow me to enter a contest, that kind

of thing. I just do what I normally do, with reTweets and promoting other people and things I’m writing about. My five-year-old daughter could make even the most polished professional negotiator break a sweat. Here’s how a typical conversation goes after I pick her up from preschool: Kelley SCARSBROOK “Mommy, can I have a play date today, please?” she asks in her sweetest voice. “No, mommy has a ton of things to do at home today, and it’s not a good day for it,” I say, shaking my head emphatically. “But last week you said that I could have one, and now you’re breaking your promise.” “No, mommy is not breaking her promise,” I explain. “It’s just that I need time to prepare for a play date. Our house is very messy today, and I need to clean it.” “Not my room. I made my bed, so we can play there, while you clean the house,” she replies without missing a beat. “Yes, I suppose…” “And we can do makeup and dress up,” she adds with a smile. “No, no makeup today. I don’t want you two to do that,” I say, finding myself drawn to the possibility of hosting the play date. Then she brings out the big guns. “And you gave my brother two play dates last week, and I only had one, so it’s not fair. Please mom, please. I beg you.” (Insert quivering lip here). “OK, let’s have a play date, but it’s only going to be for an hour and a half,” I say, thinking I still have the upper hand. “You can go and get your friend, and we’ll take

her home with us.” “Yay, you’re the best mom ever!” And then gives me a big hug. And somehow, by the end of that conversation, I feel as though the idea was a good one, and that I’m the best mom in the world. Wow, this kid is good. It’s amazing that children at this age have already mastered how to manipulate the world around them to get what they need and want. As parents, we must of course, always have rules and boundaries for our children. But it’s interesting to see how children will constantly challenge those boundaries. As adults, we are often scared to ask for what we truly want. We tend to shy away from negotiating with others, both personally and professionally. It’s as if somehow along the way, we have lost our ability to fearlessly ask for what we want in life. Business schools tout negotiation skills as one of the most important skills to posses, and we see thousands of people driven to motivational speakers who empower them with it. It’s a skill that seems to have eluded us in adulthood. So how did we lose it? Why do we see so much risk and danger when asking for what we desire? If the end result of what we seek out is a “no,” is that really the worst outcome? The next time you find yourself against a “no” situation, ask yourself what a five-yearold might do. Posts more personal previously  continued from page 11 “It’s funny,” she continued, “because Les Than Jake played the Commodore a couple years ago and I got to interview them, so it was like my digital world coming full-circle, which was exciting for me.” Bollwitt’s Miss 604 blog came to life in 2004 with relatively few posts, mostly about life in Surrey — “news” of a coyote on her driveway, maybe — and tidbits about a Canucks game or episode of The Amazing Race. By 2006, she began taking it seriously, studying the craft of blogging at conferences and writing about events, food and other things of greater interest to her and, strategically, her readers. “The food stuff just happened,” she related, “because there’s just so much going on in that scene, especially downtown (Vancouver).… It’s fun to go out and eat and take really cool photos with my great new camera and post those images. I like to post those just before lunch, too, just to make people hungry.” A cute caricature of Bollwitt graces Miss604.com, and her bio is detailed there. As for her posts, they used to be much more personal. “I try to keep a balance with that, because being online you need to have that interaction with people and be a human being, but there is a barrier you have to put up to not let the online world get too close. You know, I say I live downtown, the West End, but I never say exactly where. And my family members and parents, they

aren’t named either. When we go away, because we do post that we are going somewhere, I always get a house-sitter, just in case. You’re putting it out there.” Just last week, Bollwitt was in Ghana to blog about The Bicycle Factory, a campaign by Cadbury to deliver more than 4,500 bikes to communities in the African nation this year. The chocolate maker invited her there, perhaps realizing the kind of pull Miss 604 has here in Metro Vancouver. Most people don’t know Bollwitt’s day job is building Wordpress-created websites with Sixty4media, a company she launched with her husband. “That’s my career,” she said. “It pays the rent and puts food on the table, so it’s my top priority.… But I wouldn’t have Sixty4media without Miss 604. People know they can come to me to get a website built because they heard about it through Miss604, so they really work hand in hand.” Banner ads on Miss604.com mean the blog site “does pretty well” for Bollwitt. “It pays my car payment, let’s put it that way — it can’t pay the rent yet,” she said. “The thing is, I don’t write the site as though it’s a business, I write it as though it’s still a blog — a professional, responsible one. If it were a true business, I’d have more content, maybe more writers, and it’d look a little different, with ads wrapped around the words and all kinds of things to make money. I haven’t fully committed to that, and I’m not sure I ever will.”

And the winner is… Daniel Meloche, judged B.C.’s Best Young Designer in a competition among six finalists who each decorated a condo at the new Morgan Crossing development in South Surrey. Meloche, a graduate from the Art Institute of Vancouver, is an interior designer and project co-ordinator for Northland Properties. In his suite at Morgan Crossing, Meloche favoured “a clean and contemporary design aesthetic with striking pops of colour and strong lighting elements.” The furnished design suites are open for public viewing every Saturday and Sunday until March 20. Meloche will be on site each weekend from noon to 3 p.m. to offer general design advice to visitors who tour the suites. As his prize, Meloche will choose either an all-expenses paid trip to New York City to attend the Architectural Digest Home Design Show, or the cash equivalent. “The judges were looking for the designer that really captured their target market,

while remaining true to their own design aesthetic,” said Kari Henshaw, a judge in the competition and principal at Insight Design Group. “It’s a tough balance to achieve, and Daniel accomplished it with thoughtfulness, cleverness and a well executed design.” Meloche said he’s overwhelmed by the contest win, and thankful. “The competition was not only a great test of skill, but also a test of strategy in orchestrating my design vision on budget and on time,” he said. “Every competition has its up and downs, but through all the hours of painting, ironing, shopping, and some more painting, there was nothing more rewarding than the final result, and the reaction of people who come through my suite.” Public voting also determined a winner in the “fan favourite” category. Burnaby’s Joanna Kado won the category by designing a suite that featured “warm colours, urban influences and layers of textures.” Kado’s prize is $2,000 cash.

The Surrey Michael BOOTH Eagles used Sports Editor home ice to grab a quick 2-0 series lead in their bestof-seven set with the Coquitlam Express to the B.C. Hockey League playoffs last weekend. The Eagles overcame a shaky start to trim the Express 4-2 in Game 1 Friday night at South Surrey Arena and then dominated throughout in a 4-1 Game 2 win Saturday. The games have been wide open affairs with the Eagles averaging over 40 shots per night (83 in the two games) while the Express have kept pace with 61 of their own on the weekend. While those numbers may seem high, Eagles coach Matt Erhart is happy with the way his defenders have maintained a disciplined approach in their own end. “We charted their shots (in the first game) and I think they only had eight that came from within 10 feet of the net,” Erhart said. “We did a good job of keeping their shots to the outside and we did a good job of not over-chasing the puck. We want to control the slot and not chase some of their skilled players around.” Erhart then added, “One of the keys so far has been special teams. We’re 10 for 10 on the penalty kill and three for eight on the power play so that’s been good so far.” Saturday night the Eagles were in full flight and only the solid play of Express netminder Khaleed Devji kept his team within reach. After opening the scoring with a Brad McGowan power-play marker in the first period, the Eagles stretched their lead with second period goals from Richard Vanderhoek and Jeff Vanderlugt. Surrey pushed their advantage to 40 when Vanderhoek netted his second of the game on a third-period power play before Coquitlam’s Alex Petan spoiled Karel St-Laurent’s

We had really good puck possession and puck control and they were chasing the puck for most of the night.” The series opened Friday night where both teams needed a period or so to shake off the opening night jitters. Tied 1-1 after the first period, Surrey gained a measure of separation with a pair of second period goals only to have Coquitlam answer with a goal of their own

to cut the gap to one. McGowan’s second goal of the evening midway through the third period proved to be the back-breaker and the Eagles held on for a 4-2 win. Scott Holm collected three assists to lead all scorers in the game while Vanderhoek and Tyler Morley also scored for Surrey. The series now shifts to Coquitlam, a change that amounts to more than just location. The Eagles will have to adjust from playing on the Olympic-sized ice at South Surrey Arena to competing in the much smaller confines of the Coquitlam Sports Centre. “We took care of what we needed to take care of at home and now

we have to keep it going on the road,” Erhart said. “The games tend to be more high scoring there just because it’s a tighter rink with more scoring areas. We need to realize we need to be urgent with the puck and be aware that if we get halfbeat out of the corner, they’re pretty close to the net, unlike in our rink where there’s time to recover. It sounds cliché but we need to keep the game simple, put a lot of shots on net and use the smaller rink to our advantage.” Game 3 was played Monday night with Game 4 slated for this evening (March 1) at 7 p.m. Game 5, if necessary, goes Thursday at South Surrey Arena.

SGS athletes shine at U.S. meet

Two Surrey Gymnastics Society athletes turned in impressive performances south of the border at the 28th annual Maltnomah Athletic Club competition in Portland, Oregon last week. Competing in the Level 10 (14-15 year old) category, Surrey’s Gordie Kordas placed fourth overall in the all-around

rankings while competing against athletes from Washington, Oregon and California. Kordas placed second on three in three individual events (floor, rings and high bar) as well as a sixth-place showing on the parallel bars. Meanwhile in the Level 9 (14-15 year old) category, Malcolm Herbert finished second in the

all-around standings with victories on four of the six individual events — pommel horse, rings, parallel bars and high bar. SGS athletes will be busy this coming weekend (March 4-6) when the club hosts its annual Surrey Classic and Carol Lenz competitions at the Guildford Recreation Centre.
