❚DEFYING EXPECTATIONS

Rochette in Surrey for talk Tom ZILLICH

Staff Reporter

SURREY – Olympic figure skater Joannie Rochette and former governor general Michaelle Jean will be in Surrey for a day-long April 15 event expected to attract hundreds of female business leaders. The $249-a-head “Defying Expectations” gathering will be hosted by Surrey-based Maximum Impact Training & Development in the auditorium of Peace Portal Alliance Church in South Surrey. In addition to Rochette and Jean, Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts and Patricia Graham, editor-in-chief of The Vancouver Sun newspaper, will also address the conference. Maximum Impact has staged similar, but smaller, leadership-development events in recent years, mostly of the luncheon kind. “We’ve had some great speakers, but I’ve always wanted to take this up a notch,” said Jamie MacDonald, the company’s managing partner. “We’re very excited.... Building our community in Surrey is what we’re all about.” Rochette is best known for her emotional bronze medal-winning performance at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. She skated at the Games despite the loss of her mother, who died of a heart attack while in Vancouver to watch her daughter compete. At the Games’ closing ceremony, she was the flag bearer for the Canadian team and was recently voted female athlete of the year by The Canadian Press. For event details, visit www.maximumimpact.ca.

❚COURTS/Gary Johnston being tried for Vic Fraser’s 1998 murder in Bridgeview

Trucker killed for money: Crown SURREY Tom ZYTARUK – Jeannie Fraser Staff Reporter used to play crib with Gary Johnston, drive him to the beer store, and lend him videos, coffee and smokes. She had him over on Christmas Day, 1997. “I invited Gary to come over to enjoy some of my baking,” she explained to Justice Robert Crawford, in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster. On Monday, Fraser laid eyes on Johnston for the first time in a long while, and he waved to her from the prisoner’s box. You’ve put on weight, she remarked. “Fifty pounds, I bet.” Johnston is being tried for second-degree murder for the March 10, 1998 killing of her brother Vic Fraser, a 43-year-old crane operator from New Westminster. Vic had been at Jeannie’s little yellow bungalow in Bridgeview when he was killed. During the Crown’s opening

statement Monday, at the outset of the trial, prosecutor Adam Jantunen told Crawford what he could expect to hear over the next month. The brother and sister had owned neighbouring houses in Bridgeview and while he rented his out, she lived with her teenaged son in hers. Jeannie Fraser testified that Vic had called her some hours before he was killed and told her he suspected his renters were harbouring a marijuana grow op. He’d asked the police to investigate it but they told him they couldn’t help him, so he’d check it out himself later that morning, she said he told her. Jeannie left her key under a mat and went to work. Vic was planning to meet her boyfriend, Tim Bailey, at her house, and then they’d go over to the rental house together to talk with the tenants. In Jantunen’s opening statement, the court heard that when

Jeannie Fraser knew the man who is on trial for killing her brother, Vic Fraser. Bailey arrived, he found Vic dead on the floor inside the house, covered in blood, then ran to a neighbour’s house to call 911. It’s the Crown’s theory that Johnston, who was a friend of the tenants, needed cash and, knowing Jeannie’s routine, broke into her place. Surprised by Vic, the

Crown alleges, Johnston grabbed a couple of knives from the kitchen counter and stabbed him at least nine times in the neck, breaking one of the blades off inside his throat, and then hit him over the head with a clay object and kicked him in the ribs. The Crown alleges Johnston waited around for Vic to die before making off with his wallet and the knife handles, which were later chucked into the river. The clothes he’s alleged to have worn during the murder were burned sometime later in a buddy’s fireplace. A few months later, Johnston left Surrey for Regina, where he stayed at his friend Rick Smith’s place. In November that year he killed a caretaker named Wayne Griffith inside Smith’s residence, by stabbing him in the neck multiple times, and is alleged to have told Smith “I f-ked up, I killed the

❚NEWS ❚INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY/First annual event tackles subject of gender inequality in India, and here in Surrey

Students walk for ‘missing girls’

SURREY – More Matt LAW than 70 people turned Now Contributor out for the first annual Global Walk for India’s Missing Girls at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Surrey campus on Saturday. The event was organized to bring awareness to female infanticide and feticide in India and around the world. Similar walks were held in 15 countries around the globe to coincide with International Women’s Day events. A number of prominent figures in the South-Asian community, including Sukh Dhaliwal, MP for Newton-North Delta, delivered speeches and participated in the walk. Pawan Dhillon, a Surrey maternity doctor originally from India, admitted that the gender bias in Canada is not as bad as in India, but she still sees it. “Certainly there is gender inequality between males and females. I have been in deliveries where after I’ve announced ‘It’s a baby girl,’ it’s been met with silence. It’s not a common occurrence, but it is still there and it’s something that we need rectify in our own country as well.” A study conducted in India from 1996-98 found that 76 per cent of all induced abortions were motivated by sex selection. Fifty million girls were eliminated from India’s population in 2003 in what Dhillion refers to as “the biggest genocide in India’s history.” In India, doctors who offer to identify the sex of a fetus are struck off the medical registrar and could face fines and up to three years in prison. No doctor has ever been convicted. Canada is not immune from this type of practice. There are cases in the Lower Mainland where couples have crossed

But Dhillon is hopeful for the future of young Indian women in Canada. “You know there’s nothing stopping a girl child in Canada to go as far she

wants. She needs support and encouragement and she needs to know that her family is with her and that’s what I try to convey to my patients when they come with these types of concerns.” All of the people who spoke at the event were passionate about the role

youth will play in changing gender inequalities around the world. Garima Kaur, an exchange student from India and one of the event’s organizers, was excited about the turnout for the event’s first year and plans to hold next year’s walk at Bear Creek Park.

❚POLICE SHOOTING

Memorial on King George refutes media descriptions

A memorial to shooting victim Adam Brian Purdie has been set up by friends where the 28-year-old was shot ❚PHOTO/Matt Law Wednesday night.

SURREY – A Matt LAW memorial with Now Contributor flowers, photos and notes from loved ones has been set up on King George Boulevard where Adam Brian Purdie was shot by RCMP last week. Purdie’s friends are angry at how he is being portrayed in the media, specifically saying that there is too much focus on his criminal past. Many of the 28year-old’s friends have left angry messages toward the media on a Facebook memorial page. One friend critical of the coverage said Purdie had “been clean” for years and the media has ignored his community work. Some messages have also been posted about how Purdie had touched many lives and helped people clean up in detox programs. The Vancouver Sun has report-

ed that Purdie’s girlfriend had recently broken up with him and he had been drinking in several local bars. He had also made statements about “going out” with some fanfare. Purdie was shot after police noticed an assault-type .22-calibre rifle in his car during a routine traffic stop. A replica handgun was also found in the vehicle. The incident began when Purdie sped away from a routine traffic stop on the 15400-block of 16th Avenue in South Surrey Wednesday night. Surrey RCMP Cpl. Drew Granger said Purdie “became engaged in a lethal confrontation with our uniformed member with what is believed to be an assault rifle.” A spike belt was used to stop Purdie’s Chrysler 300 on King George Boulevard, after which a

police cruiser forced the car to the side of the road. An external investigation into the shooting is being conducted by the Saanich police department, as is routine in such cases. “We don’t know if there was an exchange of gunfire as of yet. Our investigators are working on that,” said Sgt. Dean Jantzen, of the Saanich police. Purdie was sentenced to four years in 2004 after being convicted of assaulting a police officer, possessing a firearm without a licence and pointing a gun at a former girlfriend and her new boyfriend. His sentence was reduced to two years less a day for time served. Saanich police have released few details on the shooting and expect it to be a “long and tedious investigation,” Jantzen said. matt@mattlaw.ca

of authority not only tormented his victims, it damaged the reputation of the Canadian Border Service Agency, and that of the Canadian public as a whole. Crimes like his are rare in Canada, he added, and would “shock and appall nearly every Canadian.” As a border guard, Greenhalgh was entrusted with enormous power, which he “knowingly, flagrantly and repeatedly” abused with apparent indifference to the suffering of his victims, Verhoeven said. And yet, he noted, the former guard has shown no sign of remorse. The judge noted Greenhalgh refused to discuss the offences with a psychiatrist prior to sentencing. Outside court, defence lawyer Stephanie Vyas said Greenhalgh maintains he’s innocent and will launch an appeal of his conviction. The psychiatrist found him a moderate risk to reoffend, unless he finds himself once again in a position of authority. In such circumstances, the psychiatrist said, he’d be a high risk. The names of Greenhalgh’s victims are shielded by a court-ordered publication ban. The court heard he was 31 when the crimes were committed, has two children and was married to another border guard. The couple is now separated. His ex submitted a statement to the court concerning the devastating impact his crimes have had on her and their children, compounded by his abuse of trust as a fellow border guard. After he was arrested and fired from the CBSA, Greenhalgh found work in construction but has been laid off, used up his employment insurance benefits and has been living in his parents’ basement rent free, with them paying for his legal costs. Speaking with reporters outside the courthouse, Crown prosecutor Winston Sayson said Greenhalgh’s “despicable” and “detestable” deeds are “an affront to all Canadians.

SURREY – A former Tom ZYTARUK Surrey border guard found Staff Reporter guilty of three counts of sexual assault and one count of breach of public trust for illegally strip-searching four young women at the Peace Arch border crossing in 2007 has dodged federal prison by just one day. Justice Frits Verhoeven sentenced Daniel Johnson Greenhalgh to two years less one day in provincial jail to be followed by three years probation. A two-year sentence would have landed him in federal prison, where he’d do harder time with hardened criminals considering he used to carry a badge. A jury in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster deliberated for less than four hours before finding him guilty in October, following a lengthy trial. Three of his victims were U.S. citizens and the fourth a Canadian. The court heard Greenhalgh threatened the women with detention or a criminal record to get them to strip and then touched their privates as they stood in their underwear. The assaults took place in a construction zone and men’s public washroom near the Douglas – aka Peace Arch – border crossing. Verhoeven said the disgraced border guard used “relentless lies, intimidation and threats” to have his way with his victims. Undergoing a legitimate strip search can be humiliating and degrading enough, he noted, but what Greenhalgh did was worse because the women knew there was no basis for the searches but were forced to comply anyway and “reluctantly surrendered.” One victim said in her impact statement that she has since needed counselling and is cynical toward authority figures following the “insult to her dignity.” Another said she’s afraid of travelling, and of people in positions of authority. Verhoeven said Greenhalgh’s gross abuse

Man hit in own driveway by car thieves

SURREY – A 60-year-old Surrey man is in a medically-induced coma after he was hit by a vehicle while thieves stole his car Sunday night. Emergency crews attended a pedestrian accident at 3:34 a.m. on Sunday in the 5900-block of 168A Avenue. The man was found lying in his driveway

with multiple injuries. RCMP recovered the man’s vehicle a few blocks from his home shortly after. He is listed as critical but in stable condition. The Surrey RCMP is appealing to the public for help in finding a second vehicle involved in the incident. It is

a 1995, red, Ford Windstar minivan with the licence plate 287 XGH. The van was stolen two days earlier from the same location. It has a distinct logo on the driver’s side, reading “Happy Cleaning.” Anyone with information is asked to call Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-622-TIPS. – Matt Law

Casinos are here to stay because gov’t needs the money The debate over whether or not a giant casino should be built in downtown Vancouver has shone a bright light on Keith BALDREY a political reality that some people simply won’t accept. The fact is, governments at all levels have become so heavily dependent on gambling revenues that they now comprise the cornerstone of budgets and therefore are directly linked to all kinds of public services, from health care to education to capital projects. There are currently 17 casinos in Metro Vancouver, with almost 500 gaming tables and 10,000 slot machines. They generate a lot of money. The provincial government collects more than $1 billion annually from the B.C. Lottery Corporation, which oversees gambling (including lotteries) in the province. About 20 per cent of that money over three years is earmarked for distribution to non-profit organizations and charities (one can certainly argue the amount should be greater), and a smaller amount is put in a health-care spending account. The proposed casino attached to the new BC Place would be three times the size of the existing Edgewater casino nearby. It would house 1,500 slot machines, 150 gaming tables and employ 2,000 people full-time. As many as 6,000 people are expected to visit the facility every day of the week, generating more than a half billion dollars annually in economic activity. Opponents of the casino claim it would be a stain on the neighbourhood (home to BC Place and Rogers Arena, which aren’t exactly calm, quiet places) and would attract criminal behaviour,

gambling as some sort of social evil that will ruin the youth of society are missing the larger point: it is an industry that is here to stay, and will undoubtedly grow as governments use them as a convenient crutch to help ward off boosting taxes or cutting services. Frankly, as someone who will probably never visit the proposed new casino, I’d rather see the casino patrons spend their own money to help pay for healthcare, sports teams and arts groups, rather than having the government reach into my pocketbook even further than it does right now. ____________________________ The furor within the NDP over its insistence that leadership candidates hand over their passwords to social media forums such as Facebook and Twitter may be resolved by the time you read this, but nevertheless the party has demonstrated its unerring ability to shoot itself in the foot. One candidate, Nicholas Simons, has balked at disclosing his passwords, arguing that not only would his privacy be violated, but so too would be the privacy of individuals he has communicated with on those social media sites. Simons is not an unknown

commodity. He has been vetted already by the party’s candidate screening policy, and he has been elected twice. He represents the party as an MLA, and is delegated to perform various duties on behalf of the party. As a duly elected MLA, one presumes the party already has a fair degree of trust in him. As well, parliamentary convention dictates that all MLAs are to be presumed “honourable members” of the legislature. So why doesn’t the NDP treat him as such, and presume him to be an “honourable member”? Violating his privacy would seem to run counter to that. including money-laundering and gang activity. Plus, it would be a noisy addendum to a sporting facility and would send all the wrong kinds of signals to young people attending a BC Lions or Vancouver Whitecaps game. Unfortunately for the opponents, however, is the fact that governments make the decision on whether or not casinos are established, and because the amount of money to be gained from their creation is so enormous and consistent, it’s almost impossible to say no. Municipal governments love having casinos within their borders, as they get a big slice of the revenue pie as well. The municipalities that have casinos get tens of millions of dollars in return, and that funds all kinds of projects and services that might not exist otherwise. In fact, gaming has become so big in this province that without it, the provincial and municipal governments would undoubtedly raise taxes – income and/or property – or cut services, or both. That, combined with the realization that gaming revenues have a positive impact on everything from Little League baseball to parent advisory councils to arts groups, is a big reason why opposition to gaming has gradually diminished over the years. Changes did come about, albeit in small increments. Not ignoring the real needs of oppressed women in the world at large, I am, for now, putting focus on the positives women have achieved. Women have held the highest office of some of the most advanced countries. We have also travelled to space. Women today can be found in professions that were once men’s domain. Even though International Women’s Day is a celebration, it is also a reminder to keep on fighting for women’s justice and equality. Individually we all can show our commitment in helping women achieve their goals. First, I’d like to call out to all men. You all have mothers and a good percentage of you are in relationships. Some of you may have a sister or two. I want you to show your appreciation for the women in your life. Show them respect, acknowledge their achievements and let them know that they too are worthwhile creations of God. Show this love and appreciation through respectful behaviour toward the women in your everyday life. Show them you don’t need a special day like Mother’s Day or even International Women’s Day to remind you how to treat them. Next call is to the boys. You are men in grooming. Some of you may not have had the best examples of how women should be treated, but that does not give

you permission to treat women badly. You can discard the negative and learn how to have positive relationships. Positive relationships start with mutual respect. Lastly this call is to all women. In my line of work I have heard many a horror story from women about their bad mother-in-law, or sister-in-law or stepmother or the evil daughter-in-law and occasionally even a bad mother. You are women and yet you can be your own gender’s worst enemy. With women like you out there, how can men be taught not to oppress women? Just as men need to show respect to women, so do women to each other. International Women’s Day is a day to honour women and all that we do. We are nurturers, we are healers and we kiss boo boos away. Let’s respect women every day of the year instead of just on designated days. To all who want to show their respect, men and women alike, bring your children, grandchildren and the whole family to any one of the many rallies being held all over Metro Vancouver. A local one is: Women on the Bridge for Peace Date: March 8, 2011 When: 4:30 to 7 p.m. Where: Peace Arch Provincial Park, Surrey

The Editor, On the afternoon of Tuesday, March 1, this retired couple had the unanticipated need to put our “social safety net” to the test. In the cold, blustery afternoon, as we made our way home to Ocean Park on Highway 99 after spending a lovely day with friends in Vancouver, the front right tire blew out on our 2002 Passat. We pulled off the highway to consider our options as everincreasing traffic rushed past. When we decided to call a tow truck, we discovered to our chagrin that we had left our cellphone plugged into its charger at home. Fortunate in our misfortune, we thought we would be able to walk a short distance “cross country” to the Delta Fire Rescue/Emergency Services Training Station near the Ladner Trunk Road turnoff in the hopes of using their telephone. Through the cold wind and threatening rain we went to be greeted at the station by Battalion Chief (Training) Ken Johnson, who kindly took us in and assessed our problem. Imagine our surprise when Mr. Johnson promptly gained the assistance of Warren Tucker (captain of the training division) and they sprang into action. Within 20 minutes our spare tire was installed and we were on our way home. We would like to express our gratitude to the fine gentlemen and to commend them for their professional expertise in helping us out of unexpected difficulty.

Subjugated by the men in the family, controlled by society at large, not allowed to own property, Harvinder no voice to SANDHU defend you. In fact, you are considered the property of your father, brother and, when married, you are then your husband’s property! Forget equal pay, forget justice – the law is on the side of men, you have no rights. You are a woman. This was the life women faced hundreds of years ago. This is still true today in many countries. Your gender determines what kind of life you will live. Women have come very far in the rights they have, but the work is still not done. Women in westernized countries are still fighting for equal pay for equal work, while women living in oppressed countries are fighting to have a voice. Today, March 8, is International Women’s Day. We need to participate and show our support for those living in oppressive conditions. International Women’s Day was created in response to the oppression and inequality of women. This day came into being in the early 1900s when women finally started making some headway with their demands for those among them who worked.

New Stride program finds new homes for horses after they’ve left the track

E

ver wonTom ZYTARUK der where Staff reporter racehorses go when they’re ready to retire from the track? Of course you have. Thanks to programs like the New Stride Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, they need not be doomed for the knackers, or groped at in some petting zoo. It’s New Stride that looks for new homes for these horses, which have been injured or deemed “non-competitive” for racing. The Hastings Park Racecourse, in Vancouver, founded the New Stride program in 2002. When the horses are done racing, they go to a main foster farm in Abbotsford and eventually are adopted out. These are beautiful animals, bred into racing and worth anywhere from thousands to millions of dollars. Typically, five to 10 horses are cared for at the Abbotsford farm at any given time, and up to 30 come through the program every year. They take a break from racing for some months before heading into new riding programs. It’s an alternative to auctioning them off. New Stride volunteers help with grooming, groundwork, training, rehabilitation and finding suitable foster homes. Kalyn Chalupa is a New Stride volunteer. “We try to expose them to as many different things as we can — different people riding them, taking them out on trails and just finding out what they’re going to be suitable for.”

Kalyn Chalupa helps to care for and rehabilitate former racehorses, including Regal Isolation (left) ❚PHOTO/Kevin Hill and Glo, at a stable in the Panorama Ridge area of Surrey. She also operates a foster farm in Surrey, in Panorama Ridge. “What I am is another foster home, but it’s more for like oneon-one training,” she said. “Thoroughbreds are very versatile. They can go on to be competitive show horses, they can be trail and pleasure horses, they can be brood mares. They’re just good all-arounders.” Chalupa currently has two horses — Regal Isolation (aka Johnny), and Glo. Chalupa has a prospective adopter for Glo, but she’s keeping Johnny, who has “paid his way,” having won several races in his time. “He just lost interest in racing,” Chalupa explained. “He wasn’t too old, he’s only five, he just lost interest in racing and now I’m going to keep him. I think he’ll be

a really great show horse.” Chalupa’s into jumping. “So Johnny’s going to go on to do that.” Glo is a three-year-old who came into New Stride as a yearling, after her owners weren’t able to care for her. “Many of the trainers at the racetrack, they put the well-being of the horse ahead of financial gain for themselves and will often give them to good homes,” Chalupa noted. “When they put them into the New Stride program they don’t receive any money for them.” She said trainers try very hard to find new homes for these horses. “It’s a top priority for them. “We’ve had horses adopted out within months and we’ve

‘Tynehead’ talk Saturday

had horses that have been in the program for years,” Chalupa said. “Many of them are young but were either too slow or were injured when they were young. We get horses of all ages. We have a couple of long-term residents at New Stride that will probably be there forever and we have ones that come in and people are just fighting to adopt them, it all depends on the horse. We have a very careful screening process for prospective adopters. They have to go through many steps before they can actually take the horse home.” Anyone interested in learning more about the New Stride program can check out www.newstride.com. tzytaruk@ thenownewspaper.com.

❚TELEVISION SHOW

Search for Canada’s ‘worst driver’ in Surrey Discovery channel’s Canada’s Worst Driver is again searching for Surrey’s most dismal drivers. Gearing up for the seventh season, the TV show aims to improve city streets one bad driver at a time. Producers are currently seeking nominations for Surrey motorists in desperate need of driver’s training. Those selected for the program will be flown to the “Driver’s Rehabilitation Centre” in Ontario, where they will undergo a series of in-car challenges designed to improve core driving skills such as merging, parallel parking and reversing. “This is more than just a TV show,” says host and writer Andrew Younghusband. “That’s why it works. We take driver’s training seriously, which means that when you leave the driver’s rehabilitation centre, you have truly improved behind

the wheel.” In each episode, one of the eight driving students selected for the show will graduate from the driver’s rehab centre, returning home with enhanced driving skills and newfound confidence. “By helping the bad drivers, we’re not only changing their lives, we’re also changing viewers’ lives,” adds Younghusband. “I know this because dozens of viewers have written me to say that they avoided accidents because of techniques they learned by watching our show.” Nominations can be submitted by email to driver@propertelevision.com or by phone, 1-866-598-2591, from now until the end of March. Producers will be in Surrey in April to meet with potential candidates. For show info, visit www.worstdriver.ca.

176 Street/Barnston Drive Overpass

Upcoming Traffic Pattern Changes and Construction Drivers are advised that beginning early March 2011 through fall 2011, construction and permanent traffic pattern changes will occur in two phases at the 176th Street Interchange and Barnston Drive in Surrey. These changes are necessary to construct an overpass at Barnston Drive East, connecting the communities of Fraser Heights and Abbey Ridge. Phase 1 (Early March 2011 to late March 2011) • Creation of work areas along both sides of 176th Street will begin for construction of the Barnston Drive Overpass requiring slight shifts in the alignment of 176th Street between 100th Avenue and 104th Avenue. •

Construction of a new intersection at 177A Street and Daly Road will begin. When complete this intersection will provide local residents with alternate access to 176th Street and Highway 1.

On March 11, 2011, the southern intersection of Barnston Drive East and 176th Street will be permanently closed. Traffic on 176th Street will still be able to access Highway 1 westbound.

Phase 2 (Late spring to summer 2011) • The northern intersection of Barnston Drive East and 176th Street will be permanently closed. •

In July 2011, following completion of the 2010/2011 school year, the intersection at 100th Avenue and 176th Street will be permanently closed.

Once complete in fall 2011, local residents will see a reduction in highway traffic diverting through local streets and will have access to a new intersection at Daly Road, providing local traffic with access to Highway 1 via 176th Street and connections to Fraser Heights via 104th Avenue.

‘No-show’ gala staged by Surrey Foundation Time is running out to get involved in Surrey Foundation’s “No-Show Celebrity Gala,” a different kind of fundraiser. The foundation’s idea is to host a virtual gala, one people can attend right at home while raising funds for important community projects in Surrey. Participants pay $50 for a stay-at-home ticket then pick a night they can stay home and enjoy with family. Raffle tickets are also for sale for $25, for meals, spa packages and shopping sprees. “Dressing up for a gala is a lot of fun, but the bill can really add up quickly,” said Kim Angel, executive director of Surrey Foundation.

“Gown, new shirt and tie, hair, manicure, accessories, shoes, babysitting, taxi… and that’s not counting two tickets at a typical $150 each! Besides, we’re all super-busy at this time of year, caught somewhere between Christmas and spring break, and somehow a little ‘down time’ with friends and family seems so hard to get.” All funds raised go to support more initiatives of Surrey Foundation and SurreyCares project. Participants will receive a tax receipt for the $50 tickets. The raffle closes March 10, and everything ends March 15. For details, click on www.noshowgala.org.

Relay for Life events on spring calendar The recruitment drive is on for the annual Relay for Life events held in the South Fraser area. The Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life gives you and your community the opportunity to celebrate cancer survivors, remember and honour loved ones lost to cancer and fight back against all cancers. Relay teams are needed, as are volunteers, sponsors and donations for those already signed up to participate. “A personal fight against cancer takes courage,” say event organizers in an

appeal for help. “A community’s fight takes commitment. This year, we need your help to spread the word in your community and invite the Fraser Valley to join us in the fight back against cancer.” Locally, Relay for Life events are planned for May 13 in Delta (at North Delta Secondary), June 11 in Surrey (Millennium Amphitheatre, Cloverdale), June 24 in White Rock/South Surrey (Centennial Park) and May 27 in Langley (McLeod Athletic Park). Sharks show grit in loss

Sports

After absorbing a beatMichael BOOTH ing from the powerhouse Sports Editor Castaway Wanderers in the opening half, the Bayside Sharks salvaged some pride in the final 40-minutes of their Canadian Direct Insurance premier rugby match Saturday at South Surrey Athletic Park. The Sharks fought back with four tries in the second half to earn a bonus point in the standings despite losing by a final count of 52-28. “They had a Canadian national team standoff, an ex-Canadian scrum-half and a current Canadian fullback and the match-up just wasn’t there for us,” said Bayside coach David Benoit. “They really took advantage of the fact that we have some younger guys out there. The territory and the possession they got from it were huge for them. They got every bounce and every little mistake we made they made us pay for it.” Trailing 38-0 at the break, the Sharks were determined to battle back in the second half. Bayside reset their goal to earning a bonus point (scoring four tries or losing by less that seven points), then proceeded to make good on their quest. “They (the Castaways) didn’t make any subs or ease up at all, our guys just got mad,” Benoit said. “Our pride was being questioned and obviously the guys weren’t happy about the way the first 40 minutes went.” In the second half, the Sharks outscored the Island visitors 28-14 while capturing the precious point in the standings. Senirusi Roque led the charge with a pair of tries while Taylor Stogryn scored another. Peter Clifford rounded out the Sharks’ scoring with a try and four successful conversions. The bonus point proved to be a big boost to Bayside as it moved the Sharks into sole possession of sixth place in the eight-team CDI table. Bayside now needs to win next week in Burnaby to secure a spot in the second round of the premier schedule. The top six teams remain at the premier level while the bottom two drop down to division one after next week. “That bonus point was massive for us,” Benoit said. “What happens now is, if we win in Burnaby, we’re in. We know we didn’t match up well with the Castaways, but we match up well with a lot of the other teams. It all starts with Burnaby though and if we don’t beat Burnaby, we don’t deserve to be in the next round.”

Eagles, Chiefs renew rivalry

If the best rivalries are Michael BOOTH forged in the heat of playoff Sports Editor competition, exhibit ‘A’ for the argument will be on display this week at South Surrey Arena and the Langley Events Centre. For the third consecutive year — and 11th time in the Surrey Eagles’ 20-year B.C. Hockey League history — the Eagles and the Langley Chiefs will square off in a playoff series. The first team to win four games advances to the BCHL’s semifinal round while the loser has the entire summer free to plot their revenge. “Even when I was playing and they were the Chilliwack Chiefs, it was always our biggest rivalry,” said Eagles coach Matt Erhart. “We looked forward to playing them in the regular season and if we got them again in the playoffs, it was a whole other level of intensity. I think the numbers are we’ve played them in 10 playoff series over the years and, as you would expect, each team has won five of the series.” Surrey edged out Langley for second place in the BCHL’s Coastal Conference standings during the regular season and both teams wasted little time in moving through the first round

of the playoffs. Erhart said both of those first round series were tame compared to what awaits when the Eagles and Chiefs square off in the playoffs. “The Coquitlam series at times had some real playoff intensity to it,” he said. “They’re not an overly physical team and, in terms of physical play and aggression, we were probably the aggressor in the Coquitlam series. Langley is much more physical and I would expect it will be kind of a 50-50 thing as to who the aggressor will be. That in turn will lead to more bad blood, a more intense rivalry and more uptempo hockey.” The series was supposed to begin tonight (March 8) but a scheduling conflict involving the B.C. Senior Boys AAA Basketball Championships in Langley next week forced the hockey teams to make way for the hoopsters. The playoff schedule was moved up by a day with the Eagles Game 1 last night (results were not available at the Now’s press deadline) and Game 2 tonight at South Surrey Arena. The scene then shifts to Langley for Games 3 and 4 on Thursday and Friday nights, respectively. Game time each night is 7 p.m.

Dragons, Wildcats seize provincial berths

Surrey and Michael BOOTH North Delta Sports Editor schools sent six teams to the Sweet 16 portion of the Fraser Valley Senior Boys’ AAA Basketball Championships but only two are moving on to the provincials next week. The Tamanawis Wildcats and the Fleetwood Park Dragons are both headed to B.C. high school basketball’s big dance beginning March 15 in Langley. The Wildcats overcame injury problems to earn the seventh Fraser Valley berth in the provincials while the Dragons proved all of their detractors wrong in grabbing

the eighth and final B.C. berth available to Fraser Valley teams. “It’s always great to qualify for that tournament but for this group of guys even more so,” said Dragons coach Mike Sweeney. “Nobody had talked about them all year, even leading into the Fraser Valley tournament. All of the kids have played together since Grade 8 so it’s great for them to do this in their final year together.” The Dragons served notice they were ready to roar when they upended then eighth-ranked Enver Creek in the Valley Central zone final. In the double-

knockout Sweet 16 phase of the Fraser Valley tourney, the Dragons fell 75-61 to Heritage Woods before bouncing back to eliminate Brookswood 67-51. In their next win-or-go-home game, the Dragons upended perennial power White Rock Christian 7262 to end the Warriors’ season and assure Fleetwood a spot in the provincial tourney, “It was good to do both in one game,” Sweeney said. “It was a really great feeling for the guys to win and qualify for the BCs and to be able to do it against White Rock was pretty good as well. There were a lot of smiling faces

that night for sure.” After losing 79-65 to Pitt Meadows, the Dragons closed out the Valley tourney with a 76-57 loss to Tamanawis in the seventhplace game Saturday night. The team they lost to that night also battled hard to attain their goal of reaching the BCs. After blasting Brookswood 80-60 in their first game, the Wildcats lost the services of point guard Manny Dulay during a 74-52 quarter-final loss to Heritage Woods. The Wildcats kept working hard and managed to clinch a provincial berth when they eliminated Seaquam 65-58 Thursday

night. Tamanawis then lost 61-46 to Gleneagle before closing with Saturday’s win over Fleetwood. “All of the other guys had to make a huge adjustment when Manny went down because they’re not used to bringing the ball up and controlling the tempo the way Manny does,” said Wildcats coach Surinder Grewal. “That was a big loss for us but the guys kept working hard and were focused to making it to the provincials.” Both Fleetwood Park and Tamanawis will start the B.C. tourney with play-in games Tuesday (March 15).

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

If you go ahead with a private purchase, ICBC also recommends that the seller accompanies you to an Autoplan broker’s office to complete the

3. Take a history lesson: A vehicle history report can tell you a lot about the car you’re thinking of buying, like whether it’s been in a major crash and subsequently written off and rebuilt, has any liens on it or if it’s flood-damaged. ICBC recommends the CarProof Verified B.C. report. This will give you details on all ICBC claims, plus information from insurers and vehicle databases across Canada and the U.S. You can compare the two reports on icbc.com. 4. Give it your own inspection: Since 1981, every vehicle has been manufactured with a vehicle identification number. You should confirm that the VIN on the dashboard matches the vehicle registration form. Check for signs of tampering with the VIN, like loose or mismatched rivets, scratched numbers, tape, glue or paint. You should also inspect the odometer for signs of tampering — look to see if the numbers are aligned and that the mileage is consistent with the condition of the vehicle. 5. Bring in the professionals: After you’ve done your homework and taken the vehicle for a good test drive on local roads and on the highway, get a professional inspection done by a qualified mechanic. If you’re not sure who should inspect the vehicle, then BCAA’s standard vehicle inspection is a good choice. A little research can go a long way in protecting you when you’re buying a used vehicle. Arm yourself with as much knowledge as possible before signing on the dotted line and handing over payment. If at any point along the process something causes you concern, your best option may be to walk away from the sale. Remember, if a deal on a vehicle seems too good to be true — it probably is.

Good car, right price

model when it comes to performance, though the prospects are improved by the more-responsive 2.5L. On the bright side, the Jetta retains the German feel that separates it from its American and Asian counterparts, with the firm-but-comfortable ride that we’ve come to expect from Volkswagen vehicles.

WHITE ROCK

By David Chao

2092 152 STREET SOUTH SURREY

Environment

Bowing somewhat to North American tastes, the Jetta has increased in size, both inside and out. There’s lots of room in both the front and back seats, and the trunk is impressively large for a compact car. Controls are logically placed and easy to use, but it would have been nice to see the stereo display located at the top of the dashboard in plain view, instead of the two large vents taking up space. As interesting as the base Trendline trim might be for under $16k, it’s hard to recommend a car that doesn’t include air conditioning or remote keyless entry. The Trendline+ adds these features, while cruise control shows up on the Comfortline.

DO A COMPLETE

For the past two decades, the story on the Jetta has been the same thing: “good car, too expensive.” Jetta owners loved their German-engineered compact sedans dearly, but in comparison to less-expensive Honda Civics and Toyota Corollas, it was difficult to compete directly on price alone. As a result, the Jetta settled into something of a niche role, with a loyal fanbase and a host of admirers, while the Civic and Corolla dominated sales. For its part, Volkswagen seemed fine with that. Preferring to position the Jetta as a premium alternative, the automaker decided to sell it alongside the City Jetta, which was essentially the previous model at a lower price. However, that strategy—while intriguing—could only go so far in a segment that has gotten increasingly competitive in recent years. With a new crop of value-priced compacts arriving for 2011, headlined by exciting new entries such as the Chevrolet Cruze and Hyundai Elantra, Volkswagen had to reconsider the Jetta sales model. The result is a brand new, 2011 Volkswagen Jetta that sells for just $15,875, which is a significant drop from the 2010 model’s $22k starting price. And while the redesigned, sixth-generation sedan is an excellent car, that price reduction is what makes it a potential game changer. Though the Jetta still has upmarket appeal, it’s now priced like the mass-market compacts to which it’s been compared. There’s only one major sticking point, and you’ll find it under the hood. In order to get the price down, VW has equipped sub-$20k Jettas with its decades-old 2.0L inline-four, which produces a subcompact-like 115-hp and 125 lb-ft of torque. To get the excellent 2.5L inline-five that served as the base engine in last year’s model, you have to spend $21k. Mind you, consumers who have always wanted a Jetta (but ended up with something else) can finally justify the purchase—and that’s really the point. Volkswagen has taken the Jetta closer to what it once was, without compromising what it has become. That alone will turn window shoppers into Jetta owners.

Features

The Jetta ranges in price from $15,875 to $26,655, and is available in Trendline, Trendline+, Comfortline, Sportline, and Highline trims. Standard equipment on the Spartan Trendline includes ABS, traction control, tilt/telescope steering, four-speaker CD/MP3 stereo, and six airbags. Notable features available as options or on higher trims include air conditioning, fog lamps, cruise control, remote keyless entry, heated front seats, Bluetooth, six-speaker audio, and a sunroof. Fuel efficiency for the 2.0L gasoline engine is rated at 9.1L/100km in the city and 6.0L/100km on the highway, while the TDI diesel is rated at 6.7L/100km and 4.6L/100km, respectively.

Thumbs up

Lower price; sleek styling; huge trunk.

Thumbs down

Mediocre base engine; limited features on base models. The bottom line More competitive than before, the Jetta is becoming a comeback car of the year.

Competitors

Chevrolet Cruze

$14,995 is the starting price for the much-anticipated Cruze, which employs a 1.8L inline-four with 136-hp and 123 lb-ft of torque or a turbocharged 1.4L inline-four with 138-hp and 148 lb-ft of torque, as well as a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. GM has seriously impressed with its post-bankruptcy vehicle offerings. The Cruze is easily the best compact car the automaker has produced.

Design

Performance

The base 2.0L inline-four generates 115-hp and 125 lb-ft of torque, while the 2.5L inline-five pushes 170-hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. Both engines get a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. Down the line, the the turbocharged 2.0L from the previous model will return (good for 200-hp), along with a 1.4L hybrid powertrain with 150-hp and a seven-speed direct-shift gearbox. Of course, what many people really want in their Jetta is VW’s turbocharged TDI 2.0L diesel, producing 140-hp and 236 lb-ft of torque and connected to a six-speed manual or direct-shift gearbox. Handling is reasonably good, but the steering is a tad light for my taste and doesn’t provide much road feedback. In combination with the 2.0L engine, that makes for a very relaxed base

Honda Civic

Starting at $14,990, the Civic features a 1.8L inline-four with 140-hp and 128 lb-ft of torque, a 2.0L inline-four with 197-hp and 139 lb-ft of torque, or a hybrid powertrain producing 110hp and 123 lb-ft of torque. Introduced for 2006, the current model is at the end of its fiveyear cycle. Honda has just taken the wraps off of a redesigned, 2012 model that represents a progression of the ultra-popular compact car.

Premium Synthetic Oil Change

Hyundai Elantra

2.0 L NON TURBO

The superbly styled Elantra sells for $15,849, powered by a 1.8L inline-four with 148-hp and 131 lb-ft of torque, and comes with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Hyundai is starting to put serious pressure on its rivals. After getting its quality issues sorted out, the Korean automaker has raised the bar on design, producing some of the prettiest cars on the market. ■

The best overall descriptor for the Jetta is “simple”, and with that goal in mind the designers have done a fantastic job. It’s a very elegant car, with clean lines and pleasing proportions. Though some consumers might find it a bit too generic for their tastes, it’s very easy on the eyes. A prominent badge and trademark grille treatment clearly define the Jetta as a Volkswagen, but there’s a decidedly Audiish feel to it that’s particularly noticeable in the back, from the curve of the rear deck to the shape of the tail lamps. Inside, the Jetta continues the simple styling with a businesslike interior that isn’t fancy, but comes across as very well organized and comfortable. With solid-feeling plastics and sturdy controls, build quality is a definite high point in the Jetta. As with its predecessor, it feels like the upscale car that Volkswagen envisions it being.
