imon Fraser University’s Surrey campus is making global connections and some of them could have a big impact on the City of Surrey. Members of SFU’s staff recently returned from India as part of the City of Surrey’s mission to connect with companies that could be potential business partners. The most notable were Mario Pinto, SFU Vice-President Research and Dr. Erik Kjeang, researcher in the School of Engineering Science. Pinto made the trip to connect with members of the Bollywood film industry and establish future internship positions in India for SFU students. “We approached them to see if we could form these linkages for our students. We were very successful because they’re willing to accommodate our international co-op students,” said Pinto. Through these meetings, Pinto also discussed the opportunity for actors and producers from Bollywood to come here. “We had very positive signals that they would like to come here and film. It would certainly be a boon to the city of Surrey,” said Pinto. see GROWTH page 3 

❚FATAL CRASH

HEARTBREAKING LOSS Feeling lucky on Friday, victim rights champion was killed on his way from buying lottery ticket

Family and friends say Bob Selig was a “simple, honest man.”

Tom ZYTARUK Staff Reporter

SURREY – A Surrey champion of victims’ rights has sadly become a victim himself. Bob Selig, 80, of Whalley was killed Friday afternoon when his sedan was broadsided by a pickup truck that Surrey Mounties suspect may have blown though a stop sign. The crash happened about two blocks away from Selig’s house as he was heading home after buying a lottery ticket. “Maybe we’ll hit the big one,” he’d told his wife, Pat, as he left for the store. That ticket, she said Monday, is still inside his shirt pocket. Bob and Pat became outspoken advocates of victims’ rights after a man high on cocaine stabbed their daughter, Laurie Wood, to death in 1992, in Cloverdale. “We feel that we owe it to Laurie to try and get some good out of a

terrible thing like this,” Selig said at the time. Wood, 33, had been killed while attempting to save her friend Caren Rainey, who was also stabbed to death. Rainey, 33, was four months pregnant and Wood left behind three young children. The killer was acquitted of second-degree murder but found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 10 years in prison – a sentence Selig considered “ludicrous” and a “slap on the wrist.” The Seligs lent their considerable support to Crime, Responsibility

and Youth (CRY), a Surrey victims’ rights group that was launched by Chuck and Dona Cadman after their son Jesse was murdered in 1992. Chuck became MP for Surrey North and held the position until he died of cancer in 2005. Today, Dona Cadman is the Conservative MP for that riding. “He was a very kind man, very giving,” Dona Cadman said of Bob Selig. “He and Chuck had a very special bond. He was a good guy. He’s going to be missed.”

❚ NEWS ❚POLITICS/Farnsworth announces plans to improve care in Surrey

NDP touts health-care fixes

SURREY – NDP Matt leadership candidate LAW Now Contributor Mike Farnworth and Surrey-Fleetwood MLA Jagrup Brar met media outside of Surrey Memorial Hospital Friday to announce their plans for improving health care in the area. They announced three key solutions for problems facing Surrey hospitals that they intend to fight for. The biggest is a plan to fast track the building of a new emergency room at Surrey Memorial Hospital that was supposed to be completed in 2010. “If the Port Mann Bridge can be fast tracked, there is no reason why the people in Surrey, and Delta and the surrounding area should continue to wait for health care,” said Farnworth. The second part of the plan is the creation of a 24/7 health clinic that would help to relieve pressure on emergency rooms for non-acute health issues. “Given the growth rate here in Surrey, I think this is an ideal location for a facility like that. Once people know that a thing like that is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, people will in fact use it,” added Farnworth. The third part of the plan involves consulting with the community and health-care programs at local universities. Farnworth wants to work with the Kwantlen Polytechnic University

The crash happened at the intersection of 128th Street and 103rd Avenue, at about 5:15 p.m. Surrey RCMP Insp. Dave Attfield said it appears the pickup truck, driven by a 28-year-old Langley man, “either failed to stop at the stop sign or failed to clear the intersection before proceeding.” “While there is no initial indication of impairment, the investigation is in its early stages,” Attfield added.

By working with these institutions, Farnworth hopes to make a connection with the people who are training the nurses of the future. Farnworth also took the opportunity to discuss his campaign for leadership of the provincial NDP. “I’m working as hard as I can to convince the members that I’m the

best candidate to unite our party and to come out of it and go forward and win an election,” he said. “There’s five strong candidates in this race and all I know is that I’m running to be the one that finishes top on the ballot.” After 10 years, Farnworth believes that British Columbians are ready for a change in government. “The B.C. Liberals seem to think it is just a case of changing leaders. My view is the public are two steps ahead of them and want a change,” he said.

Selig died at the scene. His daughter, Debbie 0’Bee, said he was a “simple, honest man who loved his family and honoured his friends.” “His loss leaves a terrible ache in our lives and we have just started our journey of missing him dearly.” Police are asking witnesses to the crash to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502. Growth a priority for SFU Surrey campus  continued from page 1 Anupam Kher, an award-winning Indian actor, had even expressed an interest in setting up an acting school in the City of Surrey in conjunction with SFU. He has teamed up with Luminous Power Technologies Ltd., a large Indian-based company that specializes

Coroner will investigate mysterious death SURREY – A Coroner’s Act investigation has been ordered into the mysterious death of Ernestine AnneMarie Gagnon, 37. The Surrey RCMP serious crimes section awaits toxicology results, hoping they’ll shed light on how Gagnon, a Surrey resident, ended up dying at the edge of a road near Green Timbers Forest. A passerby found her body lying on the gravel shoulder of 92nd Avenue, near 144th Street, at about 10:20 p.m. on Feb. 21. “We suspect she may have been involved in the sex and drug trade in the area,” Cpl. Drew Grainger said. That said, he added, “no foul play is suspected at this time.” Gagnon was white, had blond hair, and was wearing jeans and a white winter coat. Police are hoping to speak with anyone who might have seen Gagnon or spoken with her in the hours prior to her death. They are asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

in power products like batteries and renewable/alternate energy solutions. “India is a good potential market for this technology, it is a very cost conscious market where conventional fuel-cell technology has had a hard time being commercialized,” said Kjeang. “They’re (Luminous) looking into teaming up with us to develop our fuel-cell technology into an actual product that can be commercialized on the Indian market.” Kjeang said the fuel-cell technology could be coupled with low cost solar

cells to produce an inexpensive clean energy system in rural communities that are off the grid. Simon Fraser University is putting a lot of emphasis on the growth of the Surrey campus. “I think in terms of our growth as a university Surrey is really our priority,” said SFU president Andrew Petter. “We very much want to move forward with the MoU we signed with government in 2006 to double the size of this campus and to be part the growth of the Surrey city centre.”

SURREY – A Surrey teenager accused of making prank calls to restaurants and hotels in North Vancouver is facing 19 criminal charges. The 16-year-old boy, whose identity is shielded by the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was arrested in Nanaimo. He’s accused of pretending to be a fire marshal. As such, he allegedly had three North Van restaurants and a hotel turn on their fire sprinklers, causing about $100,000 in damage. “The boy is known to police as a result of previous similar behaviour,” said Cpl. Devries, of the North Vancouver RCMP. “In the days following the incidents we received a number of tips from across the country, all of which pointed to this individual.”

Surrey hit-and-run theft victim dies SURREY – The Cloverdale man who was run over by his own car as thieves stole it from his driveway has died in hospital. The theft happened last Sunday. Khammone Phommavong, 60, died Friday afternoon. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is helping the Surrey serious crimes section investigate. “It is being treated as a homicide based on the information we have at this point,” RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen said. The RCMP has not identified any suspects. Phommavong was hit around 3:30 a.m. on March 6 when he attempted to stop his car from being stolen in the 5900-block of 168A Street. Emergency crews found Phommavong lying in his driveway with multiple injuries. He was taken to hospital and put into a medically-induced coma while doctors treated his injuries. His car was recovered a few blocks away shortly after the incident. “Understandably, as any family would be, they’re extremely distraught,” Thiessen said. “Initially it didn’t appear that the injuries were such that he would lose his life, but unfortunately, he did take a turn that ultimately resulted in him passing away.”

City of Surrey sues former planner SURREY – The city alleges he stole public money to buy a house, so Surrey is suing a former planner to recover the cash. Documents filed nearly a year ago in B.C. Supreme Court seek damages from Akonyu Akolo, once the city’s area planner for South Surrey. The writ accuses Akolo of breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, fraud, misappropriation and conversion of funds. None has been proven in court. The city claims Akolo, who was fired from his job when irregularities were brought to the city’s attention, used city money to purchase a home in North Delta. Akolo has also been the subject of a Surrey RCMP criminal investigation, but no charges have been laid thus far. – Compiled by staff

Surrey hopes for lower numbers as city counts homeless Wednesday SURREY – More than Ted COLLEY 700 volunteers will hit Staff Reporter Metro Vancouver streets Wednesday to count the homeless. Some of them will be working in Surrey where a total of 386 homeless people were counted in 2008, the last time the regional count was taken. The count has taken place every three years since 2002. The count helps municipalities and the provincial government plan and develop policies to assist the less fortunate. Surrey Coun. Judy Villeneuve, council liaison on the Surrey Homelessness and Housing Society, hopes this year’s total will reverse the past trend of steady increase in the number of people without a home. “I know in Surrey we’ve had a very focused effort to house people that’s been very successful, so I hope it’s not increasing,” Villeneuve said. “We’ve housed over 380 people in the last three years.” During the 24 hours of counting, volunteers will be on the lookout for those living on the street, people in homeless shelters, those with no fixed address in hospitals, jails and other temporary facilities and those temporarily staying with friends and family. Villeneuve said there is a particular interest in locating youth who are couch

surfing, jumping from one friend’s place to another to keep a roof over their heads. “Those people are homeless, they’re just not on the street yet. They are the people we really want to connect with, those in danger of being homeless.” Finding all of the city’s homeless has been a challenge in the past, but Villeneuve said she’s confident most, if not all, will be found this year. “The street is a community. Kwantlen students are ‘disappointed’ after red tape blocks final U-Pass deal

SURREY – Red tape Marisa BABIC is being blamed for Staff Reporter delaying launch of the U-Pass program for students at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and Douglas College. The U-Pass program, which allows students to use buses, SkyTrain, Seabus and the West Coast Express for a monthly fee of $30 per month was set to start in time for the summer semester. “We’re extremely disappointed and frustrated,” Matt Todd, a spokesman for the Kwantlen Student Association, said Monday. The U-Pass program is a partnership between TransLink, the provincial government and a coalition of Metro Vancouver public post-secondary institutions that provides cheaper transit options for students. Todd said the contract with TransLink is close to finalization but a few “small” administrative snags, which he characterized as of a “bureaucratic red tape” nature, are blocking the final deal. In Kwantlen’s case, the U-Pass delay is also delaying the launch of a private intercampus shuttle bus. Kwantlen Polytechnic University opted to develop its own Multipass program, a program that combines U-Pass and a private shuttle bus service between its four campuses in the region, for a monthly fee

“The interim contract has worked extremely affectively. ILLEGAL DUMPING / ABANDONED WASTE

Illegal dumping is a serious and growing problem in Surrey. Abandoned garbage is not only an eyesore but it impacts our City in many negative ways. Illegally dumped material makes neighbourhoods look filthy and unsanitary and also has serious effects on the environment, wildlife habitat and the ability of others to use and enjoy outdoor recreational areas. Let’s respect each other and dispose of waste properly. Q

My husband and I have been married for 15 years and have two children. I was a stay at home mother for our entire marriage. We have now separated and my husband states that because he was the only income earner, I am not entitled to a division of the family assets. Is he correct?

A

David C. Halkett Family Law

604.581.7001

Your husband is most definitely not correct. In British Columbia, marriage is considered an economic partnership. Once a married couple separates, they are entitled to apply for a division of family assets. The starting point is an equal division of all assets used for a family purpose. Such assets can include (amongst others) the family home, RRSPs, employment pensions and household goods and effects. The longer the marriage, the less likely a court will deviate from an equal division of the family assets although both parties are entitled to ask the court to divide the assets unequally if an equal division would be unfair in a specific set of circumstances. You should seek legal advice regarding your entitlement to a division of assets.

Abbott ‘can hit ground running’ on issues

 continued from page 1

“I’m happy because George Abbott, I think, is a very good listener, he’s reflective,” McNally said. She said he’s also familiar with the pressing issues facing school districts in the province. Abbott was the education minister for a few weeks earlier this year but then dropped the portfolio to run in the Liberal leadership race. “On a lot of issues, he can hit the ground running. It’s not like we’re starting at square one all over again,” McNally said. The Surrey school district is currently facing a budget shortfall and chronic overcrowding. McNally acknowledged the treasury board controls the purse strings when it comes to funding, but she feels optimistic that Abbott will give the cash strapped school district a sympathetic ear. She noted Abbott has met with school officials in the past and is well aware of the growth pressures facing Surrey, the

largest school district in the province. Surrey-Cloverdale MLA Kevin Falcon has been appointed as finance minister, a development McNally considers “a bonus.” “Kevin Falcon is on record saying we need new schools and some of the worst crises are in his very own backyard.” McNally said Trustee Terry Allen plans to serve notice of motion at this Thursday’s school board meeting that will urge senior school officials to travel to Victoria as soon as possible to plead the school district’s case for more cash. Meanwhile, some key NDP leaders are critical of the new Liberal cabinet. 10 ways Premier Clark can prove she’s serious about change Just hours before Christy Clark was sworn in as this province’s 35th premier, a B.C. Liberal MLA joked to me Keith BALDREY that it was the dawn of another “New Era,” similar to the one that ushered in the Gordon Campbell government in 2001. “Sure glad I saved all those New Era signs!” said Ralph Sultan, the MLA from West VancouverCapilano. But how much of a New Era will it really be? The proof will be in how much Clark is willing to review or revisit some key issues that began to wear on the Campbell administration. She has a number of challenges in all kinds of areas. So what better time to offer her some advice on what to do first? From this perspective, here are some of the things that should be topping the new premier’s to-do list: 1. Raise the minimum wage. Clark has promised to raise it, after consultation with various stakeholders. But let’s hope this process doesn’t drag on for months without any action being taken as it’s embarrassing that this province has the lowest minimum wage in the country. 2. Restore the independence of the B.C. Utilities Commission, reexamine the Green Energy Plan, the role of independent power production, and BC Hydro’s mammoth proposed 50 per cent increase in rates (over five years). 3. Conduct an independent review of paying the legal bills arising from the BC Rail trial. The whole episode cost taxpayers more than $12 million, and raised serious questions about the effectiveness of the special prosecutor system (not to mention paying the legal fees of defendants who

K-12 education system. Every year we see school boards clashing with the government on this issue. Every year, the government argues the dollar-per-pupil amount is going up, and every year school boards scream it’s not enough money to prevent layoffs, larger classes and school closures. 8. Include rising Medical Service Plan premiums and an increased carbon tax when it comes to measuring the full impact of government policies on a family’s pocketbook. The MSP hikes, in particular, have been dropped on the public with little or no debate, and they are bound to have a significant impact on middle-class families. 9. If the carbon tax does indeed stay, at least examine the merits of using the revenues from it to help fund public transit. TransLink is facing serious unfunded liabilities in the months and years ahead, and who knows? Maybe the carbon tax is the way to close the gap on that front. 10. Sort out once and for all the uncertainty over BC Ferry rates. There are three solutions to the problem: increase the government subsidy, increase rates or cut services. Clark’s insistence the $25

million that’s needed to keep fares down can be found within BC Ferries’ administration is nonsense. She has to make the tough call here, and it probably will mean raising the subsidy in some way. Clark has made it clear she intends to bring about real change to her government. That would mean distancing herself from some of the policies that were near and dear to Gordon Campbell. Tackling these 10 issues would go a long way toward showing she’s serious. Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global BC Keith.Baldrey@globalnews.ca

pleaded guilty). 4. Stop fighting with the independent children’s representative, Mary-Ellen Turpel-Lafond. While the advocate may stretch her mandate a bit far at times, the B.C. government needs to take significant steps to show it’s serious about implementing child protection reforms that she and others (such as Ted Hughes) have demanded. 5. Reinstate all gaming revenues going to charities and non-profit organizations. Again, Clark has promised to do this and she has the latitude in the current budget to do just that. The B.C. Liberals inflicted significant political damage on themselves by cutting these grants, for relatively minor financial savings. 6. Find a way to fend off a looming contract showdown with the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation. This may prove impossible (the union is incapable of realistic negotiations) but before throwing in the towel, Clark would be best be advised to try a conciliatory approach with a group she fought with when she was education minister. 7. Revisit the funding formula when it comes to financing the

The Editor, I read your article about the auto vandalism that might have happened because of trees that are ruining views. I sat down to the paper right after I came in from my back porch wishing the 60- to 100-foot monster evergreens in my neighbourhood were kept topped. I don’t want the trees taken right down, just maintained. I never hear about this as a compromise – it is either chop them down or not. Why isn’t topping these trees in White Rock an option? Why is there not a bylaw in place to make owners responsible to keep their trees under a required height and the cities to maintain the ones on their land too (in populated areas)? Owners not only ruin peoples’ views by allowing these monsters to grow but they can be unsafe in our weather.

Bus stop smoking should stop The Editor, Re: The bus stop at King George station on Whalley Ring Road (under the SkyTrain lines). There is plenty of room and area to stand without getting wet from the rain. But usually there is at least one person smoking and the breeze picks the smoke up and spreads it around. You just can’t get away from it. It is unfortunate but true that if you light up at the bus stop every-

Hemp should be considered

The Editor, Why do we continue to sit on our hands and wait until the eleventh hour before we reduce our environmental footprint and take action on renewable energy? Instead of propping up oil cartels and foreign manufacturers, our governments should be supporting Canada’s major research universities with funding to develop alternative energy sources and to find alternatives to petrochemicals in manufacturing processes. Why can’t we encourage the use of hemp as a renewable energy source and as an alternative to petrochemicals? Hemp is easily grown here in B.C. and it produces more biomass per acre than any other plant material. We need to start thinking outside of the box and getting ourselves beyond the gas pump. We can have our cake and eat it too, bringing good paying manufacturing jobs back into Canada and sustaining greater employment while also lowering our environmental footprint with renewable energy.

out of bus shelters and out of line by inconsiderate smokers. I have politely asked them to smoke away from the shelter or the line, but with very few exceptions, they tell me – often quite rudely – that if I don’t want to breathe their smoke, I should move away. I sincerely hope that Surrey council passes a bylaw that would make it illegal to smoke within seven metres of bus shelters and queues, and I have written to Mayor Dianne Watts to that effect. I hope they post permanent signage at bus shelters and stops making it clear that it is illegal to smoke within seven meters. And most of all, I hope they enforce the law.

The Editor, Re: Proposed waste incineration facility in North Surrey. There has been some reaction from the east end of the valley (as usual), opposing any kind of progress to possible solutions to the Lower Mainland’s waste disposal. The continuing objections just forestall a solution. The objectors need to get involved in finding a solution other than trucking or rail shipment to some other part of the planet. Europe uses a type of incineration technology to handle its waste within cities and neighbourhoods; surely those people are just as concerned about their living conditions as we are. We should be investigating how to apply and improve the incineration process instead of just putting our heads in the sand. Incineration locally requires a careful consideration of the location, but it seems to be a win-win if done right. When we became more environmentally conscious a few years ago there were three Rs, represented by the arrows in the eco logos: reduce, recycle, reuse. Why do so many local people continually think there is a fourth: redistribute? It’s time to handle our waste locally.

OnCooking

There are a number of novelty consumables that consistently reappear in the marketplace during the days leading up to March 17. These most undoubtedly include greentinted beverages like beer and milkshakes, for example. Chef DEZ Although this may be an amusing way to recognize St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, a culinary adventure of Irish cuisine would be more nostalgic. This is a perfect excuse to share my personal recipe for Guinness Beef Stew. It is fairly easy to prepare, has great complex flavour, and it definitely will help to make the dinner table a celebratory venue in recognition of St. Patrick’s Day. Enjoy, and happy cooking!

Guinness Beef Stew

Irish eyes will smile Thursday Things will be rocking Thursday for the Irish — and those who’ll just pretend to be Irish for St. Patrick’s Day. Of course, big celebrations are planned at local Irish restaurants and bars, including Slainte By the Pier, located across from the pier in White Rock. Elsewhere, local musician Pat Chessell is a busy man Thursday, with three shows on his calendar. He starts his day at 11 a.m. at Kitslano’s Wolf and Hound, followed by a 2-6 p.m. set at Ceili’s club in Vancouver. That night, Chessell and his band play Dublin Crossing pub until the wee hours, at 18789 Fraser Hwy.

Recipe created by Chef Dez (Gordon Desormeaux): “A combination of Guinness, red wine and beef broth makes a deliciously complex broth for the hearty stew. Thickening the stew is optional.” Ingredients: 4 tbsp. canola oil 1 kg cubed beef chuck stewing meat Salt & pepper 4 medium carrots, sliced thick 2 celery stalks, sliced 1 medium onion, diced small 6 garlic cloves, chopped small 2 stalks fresh rosemary, chopped 3 bay leaves 1 - 440ml can of Guinness beer 1 cup full bodied red wine 1 cup beef broth 2 tbsp. dark brown sugar 2 large red-skinned potatoes, diced large 2 tbsp. cornstarch with a few tbsp. red wine, optional Method: 1. Heat a heavy bottomed large pot over medium high heat. 2. Toss the stew meat with 1 tablespoon of the oil and salt and pepper. 3. Add the other 3 tablespoons of oil to the heated pot. Brown the stew pieces in the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pot. As the pieces are browned, remove and set aside. 4. Lower the heat to medium and add the carrot, celery, onion, garlic, rosemary and more salt & pepper. Cook for approximately two minutes until the vegetables have softened a bit. 5. Add the bay leaves, Guinness, wine, broth, brown sugar, potatoes and the reserved browned stew meat. Bring to a boil and then cover, reduce the heat to low and simmer for 1.5 to two hours until the meat is tender. Season to taste with salt and pepper and serve. Optionally, if you want a thicker broth, mix the cornstarch with the few tablespoons of wine and stir it into the finished stew. Bring to

Frustrated with hearErin MCPHEE Postmedia News ing of the continued launch of programs and initiatives focused on getting kids healthy with little payoff, Matt Young, owner of Innovative Fitness, opted to take matters into his own hands. According to the professional training company founder, families are well aware of the importance of healthy living — what they need is help to do so. “We think we’ve come up with a way to do that,” he says. Young’s 60 Minute Kids’ Club is currently being piloted in five schools in B.C., including Surrey’s Southridge School, and five in Ontario. A 60-minute a day, 60-day activity challenge, it’s designed to decrease childhood obesity and increase awareness of the importance of eating right and exercising amongst children ages five to 13. What Young hopes sets his program apart from others and increases its chance of success is that it provides an incentive, holds people accountable and conducts follow-up. The next session of the kids’ club launches April 15 and participation is currently open to schools across Canada. Young created a program for kids focused on increasing activity, not weight loss. The kids’ club operates by seeing schools sign up to participate. Program ambassadors attend and make two presentations: one to parents

❚ KIDS & FAMILIES

I understand my son better, thanks to workshop to attend his workshop. When Macdonald took the stage, he initially pointed out one of the main issues that harm boys from a young age. It’s that parents tend to see them all one particular way. It turns out, there is a gender matrix that shows a whole rainbow of different types of boys who range from the “Spider-man” type boy (extremely sensitive who feels and internalizes a great deal) all the way to the opposite end of the scale with the “Rambo” type boy (who is very high-strung and is constantly taking chances, and keeps parents on their toes). There is also a mid-range to the scale, which is a combination of these two extremes. How we as parents respond to each type of boy in the gender matrix will affect the way they see themselves. If we know how to respond to a certain type of boy in the matrix, we can influence a better outcome. Instead of using blame or shame as a way to interact with our son when things go off-track, a parent needs to respond to

the type of son they have with understanding. A parent cannot force their son to be a certain way. There are also different learning styles for boys. A teacher in the audience advised he was having difficulty with a hearing-impaired 13-year-old boy who has become despondent and less engaged in learning. After a few back-and-forth questions between him and McDonald, it turned out that the communication between the school and the parents was failing him. It wasn’t the boy’s fault, but rather the way he was being taught. His parents didn’t want to use sign language at home, and his school was using a method of teaching that didn’t work for the type of learner he was. Neither truly had a good picture of what was going on. However, as a result, the boy was becoming more and more isolated. It’s a pattern that McDonald was very quick to pick up on — and one that he sees too often. Some boys are visual, while others are auditory learners. The ones who are visual thrive on using the visual/ spatial side of their brain. They love concepts and have an intuitive understanding of steps involved without being told. They may struggle with converting pictures into words on paper, but they love to solve problems. And yes, they also love and excel at video games. The auditory learners are the ones who learn mostly through being told how to do something. They wait to be shown how to solve a problem, and are able to express their thoughts more clearly, both verbally and on paper. Neither learner is better than the other. Parents and teachers just need to figure out where each boy is on the spectrum, appreciate their weaknesses and discover the best method to teach them. In short, we need to be an advocate for our sons and work hand-in-hand with the school system. I not only walked away from the workshop with a better understanding of my son, but also a deeper respect and appreciation for the boy he is, as well. Mom’sLife

A couple of weeks ago, my sister called to ask if I would be interested in attending a workshop about mentoring boys. Although I have a son who is seven, I wasn’t entirely sold on the notion that I needed a four-hour workshop about how to help succeed. After all, I Kelley thought, isn’t he right on track? SCARSBROOK Despite my own confidence about my son, I decided to do some research on the workshop. Barry Macdonald, who is an educator and a registered clinical counsellor, runs the Mentoring Boys workshops in many regions across Canada, for both parents and educators. He has also authored two books, including Boy Smarts (published in 2005) and the more recent Boys on Target. I was intrigued to hear his point of view, so I decided

Sharks! Jane CASSIE Hammerhead, Now Contributor white-tip, grey reef, oh my! Although the purpose of my trip to Palau, a pristine archipelago that peppers the western corner of Micronesia, is for a little beach bliss, I also plan to venture beneath the waves where the 600,000-squarekilometre, first officially-recognized world shark sanctuary has been declared. This tropical oasis, coined the seventh underwater wonder of the world, is aimed at preserving more than 135 types of vulnerable fish. But how close can I get to these swimmers before I feel the same? After chatting with Tova Bornovski, general manager of Fish ‘n Fins and founding member of Micronesia Shark Foundation, and Dermot Keane, managing director of Sam’s Tours and creator of The Palau Shark Sanctuary, my preconceived fears are alleviated. “People are terrified of sharks and there’s absolutely no reason,” Bornovski says assuredly. “In the 12 years that we’ve been operating, there hasn’t been an attack on any divers.” Just hearing the ‘S’ word conjures up images in my mind of Jaws, the 1975 Hollywood blockbuster that kept me out of the water for months. As if on the same wavelength, Bornovski continues, “It’s a big misconception — and one that the author, Peter Benchley, regretted helping create. In fact, before passing away he donated proceeds from his book to shark preservation.” It’s clearly an issue that she’s passionate about. Since 2002, when Micronesia Shark Foundation was formed, Bornovski has worked diligently at educating, researching and advocating for shark protection on both the local and national level. And it’s finally paying off. Keane has also played an instrumental role in getting the guarded shark park off the ground. Networking with Palau’s Conservation Society, battling antienvironmental legislation, crossing politically-sensitive boundaries — on many occasions he’s had to go out of his ocean-side comfort zone. And now, thanks to the tireless contributions from both these

activists, Palau’s president, Johnson Toribiong, has climbed aboard this shark fishing-ban boat. He’s declared that all waters within the Exclusive Economic Zone will be a marine mammal sanctuary — not just for sharks, but for other endangered species like dugong sea cows, whales and dolphins. Preservation and conservation are key watchwords for this small independent nation of 20,000 residents. And it’s for good reason! While living at the convergence of three major ocean currents, they’re embraced by an eco-rich biosphere that boasts more than 1,400 species of fish, 500 types of coral, 30 varieties of whales and dolphins, and the world’s finest display of sharks. During this week, I also discovered a number of eco-treats for land lovers. Dolphins Pacific, the world’s largest interactive marine centre of its kind, taught me about the behaviours of their resident mammals. The River Boat Jungle Cruise provides close encounters with flying fruit bats and jaw-gaping crocodiles. And Palau’s International Coral Reef Center gave me a science and ecology lesson second to none. A number of sleek white-tip sharks swim next to other

ocean lovers in their large outdoor habitat and they certainly don’t seem to be a threat. But are we to them? Why is it such a big deal that we protect them? Keane indicates that it’s all about balance. If these predators at the top of the food chain are significantly threatened, the populations of fish below will increase. This will lead to a decimation of their food source and eventually that population will decline too — which will affect everything from our fishing industry to tourism. And all for a little shark fin soup. Through education and research, Bornovski is determined to see that this doesn’t happen. She’s created an underwater data collection form that’s being used by her guides whenever they witness sightings. “Although it only takes a couple of minutes to fill out, I have to dangle the carrot,” she says with a wide grin. “The employee who brings in the most data by next month will be presented with a dive computer at Shark Week.” This annual event, now in its ninth year will take place at Fish ‘n Fins from March 19 to 26 and will lure everyone from local dignitaries to divers. Maybe even me. Unlike Bornovski’s guides, after staying at the posh Palau Pacific Resort, I wouldn’t need a lot of enticement to return; chic spacious suites, a rainforest spa, an infinity pool, all overlooking a sensuous sandy shoreline. Who knows, maybe when I return, I’ll even have time for a little beach bliss.

Chiefs extend series with Game 5 win

Sports

The Langley Michael BOOTH Chiefs extended Sports Editor their playoff lives with a wild and sloppy 7-5 win over the Surrey Eagles in Game 5 of their B.C. Hockey League playoff series at South Surrey Arena Sunday. The result left the Eagles with a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven affair with Game 6 Monday night in Langley and Game 7, if necessary, in South Surrey tonight (March 15). After splitting the first two games in Surrey last week, the Eagles edged the Chiefs 4-3 and 3-2 in Langley to take a commanding 3-1 lead into Sunday’s Game 5 clash. The close-checking, defensive hockey that the playoffs are famous for quickly evaporated Sunday when the goaltenders for both teams turned in mediocre performances. Chiefs’ goaltender Wyatt Galley waved at two long shots that allowed the Eagles to stay close, but those gaffes were answered by a series of strange-angle goals surrendered by Surrey goalie Karel St-Laurent. The veteran puck-stopper was yanked 35 seconds into the third period after a routine shot slid by him to give Langley a 6-3 lead. “I think both goalies were off their angles,” said Eagles coach Matt Erhart. “Karel really hasn’t had a bad game for us this year and I was hoping after we made it 5-3 that he would finish strong. He’s so mentally strong I thought he would shut them down in the third but it was just one of those games.” Andrew Hunt replaced StLaurent in the Eagles’ net and the intensity dropped off noticeably until Surrey was given new life midway through the period with a highlight reel shorthanded goal by Steve Koshey. The Eagles’ blue liner took the puck in his own zone, ran over Langley’s Brad McBride at centre ice, recovered the puck and carried it into the Chiefs’ end where he sidestepped one defender before

The Eagles ramped up the pressure after that and were rewarded when Scott Holm scored to pull the Eagles to within one. Surrey kept pressing but were unable to come up with the equalizer before Matt Ius scored into an empty net to seal the win for Langley. Ius finished the game with two goals and three helpers to lead all scorers with five points. Brandon Morley, Daniel Gentzler and Tim Coish also scored goals for Surrey. “To beat a team in the playoffs — especially a team like Langley — four times in a row is extremely difficult,” Erhart said. “Langley played pretty desperate although in the first 10 minutes of the game we had the puck in their zone for maybe

eight minutes. Langley played desperate and their top players were their top players in that game.” Surrey began the weekend in Langley where they swept a pair of games at the Langley Events Centre. In Game 3 Thursday, Surrey built up a 4-0 second-period lead and then withstood a furious Chiefs rally to earn a 4-3 win. Richard Vanderhoek scored twice for Surrey while singles came from Jeff Vanderlugt and Bard McGowan. The following night Vanderlugt played the hero when he scored an unassisted goal in the second overtime period to lift Surrey to a 3-2 win. Vanderhoek netted a pair of goals for Surrey in regulation time. The disappointment of Sunday’s

loss was tempered by the knowledge the Eagles have played so well on the road this season. Surrey has won all four playoff games away from South Surrey Arena this spring and with no time off between games, Erhart said it’s easy to put Sunday’s loss behind them. “It’s kind of like after we lost Game 1 — there’s no time to think about it,” he said. “We just turned our attention to the next night and said, ‘Let’s go do it.’ I told the guys after the game (Sunday), ‘Boys we’re up 3-2 in the series so we’re in a good spot. Let’s not worry about this.’ “We’ll tweak a few things here and there but we know we can beat these guys. We have to be mentally strong because that’s part of being in the playoffs.”

Crusaders’ golden dreams end in bronze

The Holy Cross Michael BOOTH Crusaders settled for a Sports Editor bronze medal after hammering Vernon 74-44 in the third place game at the 2011 B.C. Senior Girls AA Basketball Championships in Kamloops last weekend. Seeded fourth after winning the Fraser Valley title earlier this month, the Crusaders were aiming for a gold medal showing in Kamloops even before they received added inspiration when it was learned star forward Tessa Beauchamp has suffered a relapse in her battle with cancer. “The team has known about it for three weeks and they’ve been extremely supportive,” said Crusaders coach Steve Beauchamp, Tessa’s father. “They kind of went through this last year when Tessa was

so sick so it was hard for them to accept. They’re all great friends and when we told them, they spent a long time together in the locker room. It was pretty emotional for everybody.” The fired up Crusaders walloped Windsor 81-45 in their opener and then overcame a stumbling block when they beat Sa-Hali 78-62 in Thursday’s quarterfinal round. Beauchamp led the way with 30 points and 10 rebounds while Michelle Bos chipped in with 16 points and 11 rebounds. “That was a real emotional game for us because of our history with Sa-Hali,” Steve Beauchamp said. “Sa-Hali represented a big obstacle for us because they had knocked us out of the winners side of the tournament in each of the last two years. So beating them was very emotional for us

and it was a hard fought game so we had to little tight and made some uncharacteristic battle pretty hard.” mistakes and I think that’s all from the girls The Crusaders’ championship dreams wanting to get to that championship game were ruined in the semifinals where they so badly. Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

DriveBC is the Province of British Columbia’s most popular website, and it’s been overhauled and improved to make it more user-friendly, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Shirley Bond announced recently. “Our DriveBC website is an invaluable tool, with details of current highway conditions, travel advisories and scheduled construction work,” said Bond in a press release. “We’re always looking for ways to improve the services we deliver. We’ve done that with DriveBC, giving you all the information you’ve come to rely on, in a more userfriendly package.” The highlight of the new website is an enhanced map view of the province’s highway network. Users can roll over icons on the map to get details of highway events, road conditions and webcam information. As with the previous version of DriveBC, highway events are also available in list form. The popularity of the site is almost as impressive as the scope of information provided. The website’s numbers include:
