SURREY – Surrey’s wrestling community is mourning the loss of one of their own with the death of Randeep Sodhi, a two-time national champion. He competed, and later coached, through Surrey’s Hargobind Wrestling Club which he helped his uncle, Satnam Johal, establish in the late 1980s. “Unfortunately, we lost him far too early for his time,” Johal said Monday. “He drove himself to the hospital with abdominal pain. It turned out it was a pancreas infection and it just got worse. You are never prepared for something like this.” Sodhi’s accomplishments as a wrestler were many. He won a Commonwealth championship, two Canadian senior championships, was an eight time senior medallist and also won a Canadian junior championship. Sodhi, who died Friday, went on to become a popular coach at HWC, one who particularly enjoyed teaching the sport to kids. “He devoted his life to wrestling,” Johal said.

Company’s plan to replace aging track ties with creosote-soaked wood has Ocean Park man...

All railed up Ocean Park’s John Watkins says his search for facts about creosote, a wood preservative that is being used to replace 23,000 ❚PHOTO/Kevin Hill railway ties from Washington State, through White Rock and Surrey, shows the chemical poses a health risk. WHITE ROCK – Joggers Marisa BABIC and walkers won’t be able Staff Reporter to use White Rock’s pier and promenade for a time this week while Burlington Northern Santa Fe crews replace aging railway ties. BNSF regional spokesman Gus Melonas said the railway tie renewal is part of a $3-million project for track upgrades for B.C. “We apologize about any inconveniences for the public,” Melonas said, adding the closures are necessary to prevent injury. Melonas said a 48-person crew is expected to start replacing about 23,000 railways ties from Washington State, through White Rock and Surrey, to the Fraser River Bridge today. “We figure that it will take roughly four to five weeks to complete the entire project,” Melonas said. “Approximately 1,500 to 2,000 ties will be replaced each day.” Melonas said BNSF is working with the City of White Rock to notify the public about closures of the pier, promenade and adjoining parking lots. The closures are expected to last for two days, Tuesday and Wednesday, but that time-

line depended on progress made by crews on lthe line Monday. He said the job is a noisy one but noted the work will be done during daytime working hours. Crews using a specialized machine with an arm will pull out the old ties while another machine follows behind it slipping in the new ties. After all the new ties are spiked, a crane will pick up the old ones and load them onto rail cars for disposal south of the border.

GUS MELONAS/ “We haven’t found problems... Look at the telephone poles, they’re treated with the same product.”

Melonas said the refurbished track will improve railway safety for the company and the public. But an Ocean Park man said the creosotetreated ties pose a health risk to the public. John Watkins, a regular walker on the promenade, said the smell of the substance is

so strong that he’s quit his walking routine. “That’s 20 minutes of breathing these fumes,” Watkins said. Watkins said he noticed the new ties, neatly laid out in bundles all along the track, about a week ago, a sighting that sent him to the internet in search of information about creosote. Watkins said his search for facts about the wood preservative, which is regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, shows that coal-tar creosote poses a danger to the environment and a health risk to humans. Melonas rejected his claims. He said creosote has been approved as an acceptable product in the industry for years. “There are no bans, there are no restrictions for its use,” Melonas said. Melonas said the company has a total of 120 million ties on its network of railway lines across North America. “We haven’t found problems,” he said, adding there has been no pressure from federal agencies nor environmental or health monitoring agencies to stop use of creosote.

Students’ folded paper is ‘about hope’ for Japan

Party for the Planet rocks Surrey on April 16 SURREY – The City of Surrey is getting pretty good at throwing parties and this year’s Earth Day bash will be no exception. Party for the Planet will combine education about green living with entertainment. The headliner for this blowout is veteran Canadian folk-rock outfit, Spirit of the West. They will be joined on the BC Hydro Bike Powered Stage (all electricity for the stage will be provided by solar panels and bicyclists) by B.C. pop artist Hannah Georgas, Aidan knight, George Leach, Tambura Rasa, Cirque Surrey, children’s entertainers Bobs & Lolo and Elmo. The educational side will feature opportunities to learn about everything from agriculture, to transportation, to green energy and more. There will also be a zip line for the more adventurous. The free Party for the Planet is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, April 16 at Central City Plaza. For more information, visit www.surrey.ca.

SURREY – School kids in Surrey are using a traditional Japanese art form to help victims of modern day disaster. A Grade 6 class at Lena Shaw elementary spent the last day before spring break creating origami cranes, lotus blossoms and other designs which they later sold at recess and lunch to raise funds for victims of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that crushed parts of Japan. Principal Riz Hemraj said he’s very proud of his students and their fundraising campaign. “The Japanese people have given the art of origami to the world and this initiative allows us to use origami in giving back to Japan,” Hemraj said. The class was learning about Japanese culture and history as part of social studies when the 9-magnitude quake stuck the island nation, triggering a powerful tsunami that swept thousands to their death and damaging nuclear power stations. Student Shawna Lu, 11, said the campaign is a fitting way to help people in Japan. “We’re thinking globally but acting locally,” said Shawna as she made a series of intricate folds on her lotus flower. Her classmate Adel Ahmad said they want to help to let the people of Japan know that they’re not alone. “We’re here to help people in Japan with origami because there’s a lot of people suffering there.” Teacher Manj Jaswal said the fundraiser is aimed at helping his students wrap their heads around the popular concept of “thinking globally and acting locally,” as noted by Shawna. “It’s a hard concept to understand and it’s sad that this happened but it’s a learning experience for us and it’s helping other people,” Jaswal said. Nearly everyone at the Whalleyarea school is involved in a fundraiser for Japan. The Grade 2 class has made an origami curtain of cranes. On a large sheet of paper behind the cranes sus-

Premier helps break ground at Surrey hospital SURREY – Premier Christy Clark hit town Monday morning to launch the long-awaited $512-million Surrey Memorial Hospital expansion first announced by the provincial government three years ago. The project includes an eight-storey critical care tower, a new emergency department roughly five times larger than the current one and more. A total of 151 new beds will be added to SMH’s inventory. The emergency department component will be completed in 2013, with the tower opening for patients the following year. The expansion will also include renovations to the existing hospital that include added inpatient beds, a larger family birthing unit, a second maternity operating room and an expanded pharmacy. The project is a public-private partnership with Integrated Team Solutions contracted to design, build, finance and maintain the tower and emergency department over a 30-year operating term. Health services will be paid for by the provincial government and the Fraser Health Authority. A further $15 million will be contributed by the Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation.

Passport office is moving in north Surrey Student Shawna Lu, 11, says her school’s origami fundraising campaign is a fitting way to help people in Japan. pended by strings, are taped neatly printed touching and tender messages of hope. “Hope you are okay, Oh I want to help you, Peace and Hope, Everyone Stay Safe,” wrote seven-year-old Anthony Barbeary. The students will be sending their messages to Japan. Teacher Venessa Bentley said the youngsters originally wanted to build hotels for all the people left homeless

by the disaster but settled for sending “positive messages through the air.” “It’s about hope, that’s what we’ve been focusing on,” Bently said. After spring break, the Grade 3 class will be selling cookies to boost the school’s monetary contribution. Hemraj said all the cash raised through the various campaigns at the school will be sent to the Canadian Red Cross Japan relief effort. mbabic@thenownewspaper.com

Wooden railway ties’ ‘strong smell will go away’  continued from page 1 “Look at the telephone poles, they’re treated with the same product.” Melonas noted creosote odour eventually dissipates. “The strong smell will go away,” he said, although he was unable to offer a time line. But until that happens, Watkins said visitors to the promenade will be breathing the fumes. “The people walking along the promenade for their health are getting a dose

of this for five years,” he said. Watkins acknowledged that the cracked and aging railways ties need replacing but he suggested an alternative, concrete. Melonas said concrete ties are unsuitable for that stretch of railway. “Those are used in curvature and high tonnage areas in the northwest, primarily in the mountain grade area,” he explained. “We find this design is the acceptable practice for the operations along the waterfront.” mbabic@thenownewspaper.com

SURREY – Don’t plan on applying for a passport in Surrey next Monday as Passport Canada moves its local office to new digs in Central City. The old passport office in the Gateway tower at 13401 108th St. will close permanently at 4:30 p.m., Friday, March 25. The new office in Central City, 10153 King George Boulevard, won’t be open for business until Tuesday, March 29. The new office will be larger and will have seating for roughly twice as many people as the old accommodations and the parking headaches at the Gateway location will be a thing of the past. Transit is also readily available at the adjacent Surrey Central SkyTrain station. Anyone requiring passport services on Monday, March 28 (when the Surrey office will be closed) can call Passport Canada at 1-800-567-6868 for assistance and information on alternative sites.

Nominations sought for youth awards DELTA – There is still time to nominate an unsung hero for the third annual Delta Rotary Youth Awards. Nominations can be made for youths, aged 8-18, who are making a difference in their community or are overcoming hardships in their life. The awards are not necessarily for the sports or academic stars. “There are young people doing some really good things all around us but quite often we don’t even know it, they’re invisible,” said Andrew Block, Rotary Club of North Delta program co-ordinator. There are four categories available for nomination: compassion/ empathy, inner strength, helping hand and global. The deadline for nominations is April 15. The awards ceremony takes place on May 14. Every youth who is nominated is invited to attend the event for free. To nominate someone, call 604-590-0680 or Leslie Abramson at 604-946-0672. – Compiled by staff

ILLEGAL DUMPING / ABANDONED WASTE

Illegal dumping is a serious and growing problem in Surrey. Abandoned garbage is not only an eyesore but it impacts our City in many negative ways. Illegally dumped material makes neighbourhoods look filthy and unsanitary and also has serious effects on the environment, wildlife habitat and the ability of others to use and enjoy outdoor recreational areas. Let’s respect each other and dispose of waste properly. To find disposal locations, or report illegal dumping incidents, please visit www.surrey.ca or call Surrey’s Engineering Service Request Line at 604-591-4152.

Wraparound program in Surrey will help youth for five more years SURREY – Extended Ted COLLEY federal funding for Staff Reporter anti-gang programs is welcome news to Surrey school district officials. Prime Minister Stephen Harper was in town last week to announce his government will spend $37.5 million over five years to fund programs like Wraparound, a joint effort of the school district, Surrey RCMP, the city and the Integrated Gang Task Force to remove at-risk youth from the clutches of gangs. “We are thrilled because it ensures funding for this program for another five years,” school board chair Laurae McNally said Monday. “We call it Wraparound because all of these community agencies wrap around that child in jeopardy.” The program began in 2008 with three years of federal funding worth more than $888,000. McNally said she

doesn’t know yet how much of the money announced last week will be dedicated to Wraparound, but she guessed somewhere around $1 million would come its way. McNally said feedback from the federal government has been positive, so the continuation of funding isn’t a big surprise. “It’s good to have it official, though, and five years allows us to do proper planning.” The program provides support for students 11 to 17 years of age judged to be vulnerable to gang recruitment. A plan is created that extends into most parts of the youth’s life, wrapping the student in a network of support and encouragement. A team of five full-time district staff trained in youth intervention techniques and three police officers from the task force and the Surrey detachment devise and implement a plan for each student. tcolley@thenownewspaper

SURREY – Prosecutors will have to Ted COLLEY wait for another day to make their case Staff Reporter for having a Surrey sexual predator declared a dangerous offender. Kyle Berkson, 36 and of Surrey, was found guilty last month of breaking and entering with intent to commit sexual assault with a weapon, sexual interference and uttering threats. Berkson was convicted of sneaking into the Guildford home of a young girl – she was nine years old at the time – on the night of April 23, 2010 and molesting her in her bed. The girl, now 10, cannot be identified by order of the court. Prosecutor Lynett Jung was in Courtroom 103 at Surrey provincial court Friday morning to begin the process of having the guilty man declared a dangerous, or long-term, offender.

Jung said she was going to ask the judge to order a psychiatric assessment of Berkson as the first step in the process, but the guilty man’s lawyer, David Gable, didn’t show up. Jung tried several time to reach Gable by phone without success. Court officials were also unable to locate the lawyer in the Surrey courthouse. “I think he might in Abbotsford with another trial,” Jung told the young victim’s grandparents who sat at the rear of the tiny courtroom. The hearing was scheduled to begin at 9:30 that morning, but 90 minutes later, Gable had still not been located and the girl’s grandparents were informed it was unlikely the hearing would proceed that day. A new date had not been set when this story was filed. tcolley@thenownewspaper.com

Clark’s first week as B.C. boss shows signs of promise So far, so good. In her first week on the job, Premier Christy Clark (I still have trouble saying that) has Keith BALDREY displayed an acumen for shoring up party unity. She displayed a deft touch in appeasing both the conservative and liberal quarters of her coalition party and the evidence can be seen in her choices for cabinet and senior staff, as well as some key policies. Appointing Kevin Falcon as deputy premier and finance minister sent a strong signal to the conservatives in the party that their voices would be heard. Giving key posts to people like Rich Coleman, Shirley Bond, Mary Polak and Pat Bell reinforced that impression. Clark has put conservatives in portfolios that include finance, energy, aboriginal relations, solicitor general and the newly created jobs and tourism ministry. But perhaps just as importantly, Clark appointed an important federal Conservative as her principal secretary. Dimitri Pantazopoulous, who has a background in polling, is responsible for shaping longterm political strategy. His place in the premier’s office should provide an important link to Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s office. Maintaining good relations with the federal government is vital for Clark, who needs continued federal support on all kinds of infrastructure projects. Clark is understandably viewed with considerable suspicion by federal Conservatives, who see her as a thinly disguised booster of federal Liberals. But her moves in structuring both her cabinet and her senior staff should dispel some of those suspicions. And Clark’s positions on some

In fact, Day strongly voiced the view that it was important the B.C. Liberals stay together, noting any split on the right would lead to an NDP victory. Day carries far more weight with conservatives than Cummins, and his message of unity will likely rule the day (in fact, I wonder whether Clark may recruit him to run for the B.C. Liberals come the next election). The real test of B.C. Conservative strength will come when Clark calls a byelection in Vancouver-Point Grey. The riding is part of a federal riding that has shown strong support for federal conservatives over the years, but if the provincial party doesn’t put up some respectable voting results, it will be harder for it gain traction elsewhere in the province. Like I say, so far so good for the new premier. ••• Speaking of party unity, it’s interesting to check out where the dissident rump of NDP MLAs (the ones who knifed Carole James’ leadership) are lining up in the party’s leadership race. Most of the baker’s dozen have endorsed Mike Farnworth’s candidacy, while a smaller number have backed John Horgan. But none of them have endorsed

Adrian Dix. One non-dissident NDP MLA joked to me the dissidents were petrified at the prospect of Dix becoming leader, as they fear serious retribution from the Vancouver-Kingsway MLA. Dix’ take-no-prisoners approach worries many New Democrats, who see him as narrowing the party’s voter base rather than broadening it. But he has the dissidents most worried of all. Frankly, I can’t see dissident MLAs like Claire Trevena, Norm MacDonald, Jenny Kwan or Lana Popham faring very well in a Dixled party. They have reason to be worried. And the B.C. Liberals aren’t the only party that should be concerned about party unity. Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global BC Keith.Baldrey@globalnews.ca

key policies should also appease both elements in her party. Her support for the controversial Prosperity mine project near Williams Lake – something she brought up in her first conversation with the prime minister – will gain her support from the rural conservatives. And her decision to raise the minimum wage will please the liberals out there. That move was met with predictable squawking from the restaurant industry, but those complaints won’t have much resonance over time. If Clark continues to walk the political tightrope without slipping, she will make it much more difficult for a fringe right-wing party to drain enough votes from her party to allow the NDP to win the next election. Presumably, the biggest threat would appear to be the B.C. Conservative Party, which is close to recruiting retiring Conservative MP John Cummins as its leader, or at least as a candidate. But Cummins doesn’t have the profile to have much impact outside of his own riding of Delta. The NDP’s hopes for a bigger boost to the B.C. Conservatives were dashed – for now anyways – when two other retiring Conservative MPs (Stockwell Day and Chuck Strahl) declined to jump into bed with their provincial cousins.

wilt when confronted with the price. “You know, you could buy a small house in Winnipeg for that,” I’ll say, and the salesmen’s faces fall, and they move off in search of fresh prey. There are exceptions to my cheap/practical nature. I have a great deal of difficulty saying no to books, hence the appeal of the ebook reader. I fully expect that my obituary will include the phrase, “rescuers attempted to tunnel through the pile of books, but could not reach him in time.” On one occasion, when I was broke after a brief period of unemployment, I had to restrain myself from buying a $60 hardcover I had my eye on. I forced myself to save my pocket change until I could pay for it in coins. At least twice, my girlfriend and I have bought the same book on the same day, by accident. So my current bit of gizmo envy (I’ve been coveting a smart phone) will probably pass. I’ll go back to puttering along with wallet firmly in pocket. At least until I pass the bookstore. Hey, are the new paperbacks in?

MOTOR TREND CAR OF THE YEAR

Writer didn’t have tree facts

The Editor, Re: An item in the Now’s Roses and Rotten Tomatoes column, March 18. The writer noted the recent removal of a “beautiful tree” from in front of the Berkshire at 15325 17th Ave. and was chastising the perpetrator. Unfortunately, your writer has misinformed readers. This tree was one of six growing on city property in front of The Berkshire. When the City of Surrey arborist assessed it during the pruning done annually to maintain the health of our trees, the double-stemmed tree was found to have a large split in the trunk. The damage was such the tree could not be saved. More importantly, the potential threat to the health and safety of pedestrians and passers-by necessitated cutting down the tree. I spoke with the foreman who removed the tree and was told that the city plans to remove the stump and replace the tree later this year. Our residents value the trees near us and were relieved to know this tree will be replaced with a healthier one. Too bad your writer did not call the city before publicly scolding “whoever.”

I’ve been feeling a bit of gadget envy lately, an unfamiliar feeling for me. On the Gadget Matthew Obsessed CLAXTON Guy (GOG) spectrum, I’m decidedly on the low end. I am not, nor have I ever been, a major gear head, a tech guy, or a computer geek (other kinds of geek, yes, but not really computers). I sometimes wonder if this makes me unusual. A lot of advertising is aimed at GOGs. This can make me feel as if I’m the only one who doesn’t crave a brand new GPS device that speaks in English, French, Spanish, and Tuareg and comes with built-in clock, wireless 4G Internet, Swiss Army knife, fold-out sleeping bag, and shark repellent. I should note that, just because I don’t long for the latest stuff, it doesn’t mean I don’t want it. Sure, I’d love to have a new ebook reader, a topof-the-line $12,000 road bicycle, a ridiculously overpowered sports car. The first thing that seems to hold me back from plunging into stores, credit card-first, is the annoying practical voice that seems to emerge from the depths of my brain. So I look at the ebook reader, and I admire the interface, and ‘ooh’ and ‘ah’ over the fact that it can hold 11 million books the size of Moby Dick. And then I remember that I have a library card, and a stack of unread books still at home. I check out the sports car, and my first thought is, where do the groceries go? My second thought is, it uses how much gas? Some fleeting desires are more fleeting than others, I’ll admit. It also helps that I am a total cheapskate. I suspect this tendency was accidentally drilled into me by my father, who I am pretty sure never actually owned a new vehicle. He liked pickup trucks and he would sometimes swing by the dealerships on the weekends. He would kick the tires and ignore the salesmen, and then stare at the sticker price of a brand new half-ton, and mutter, “You could buy a farm in Saskatchewan for that.” As a result, my enthusiasm for high-end, top-ofthe-line goods tends to

The Editor, Elections are just around the corner and along with making the right choice, there’s another question that should come to one’s mind: Is the federal government going to be minority or majority? I know it’s hard to predict that right now but a majority government could have a huge impact on our great nation. The problem with a majority government arises when it tries to pass a bill. For a bill to become a law, more than half of the House of Commons must vote on it. So if the party has party discipline then no one is going to stop the bill from passing to Senate. This also brings another issue within our government. Is it really fair representation? Even though the governor general is supposed to be the most powerful person, apparently our prime minister has that status. And the backbenchers – people neither in cabinet nor shadow cabinet, don’t even have a lot of say in parliament. If they were elected to represent a riding, then they should have the equal amount of power as other members of the parliament as well. On the other hand, our PM has so much power and our honourable Stephen Harper showed that a few years ago – in 2008, when he prorogued parliament thus “resolving” the danger of coalition government. I don’t even know why we have a governor general when all he/she does is just sign a bill. I do like the system but I think our citizens should really think about the amount of power some people have in HOC.

B.C.’s royal weave Surrey was a stop for King George in 1939, and birth was given to a boulevard name Growing up in the U.K., I John LEE regularly hung out with the Special to the Now royal family. Well, not exactly — but I did see the Queen when she visited my hometown and I once glimpsed Prince Edward at an art gallery. And I swear Princess Diana smiled at me when she opened the mall I was working at as a teenager. Definitely. When I moved to British Columbia, I imagined my blue-blood hobnobbing days were over. But with Kate and William choosing Canada for their first post-wedding visit, it’s a reminder that my adopted home province has a long history of royal appointments. And, with a little sleuthing, “commoners” like us can follow in their regal footsteps. Vancouver has seen plenty of Royal Family action over the years. Charles and Diana opened Expo 86 here, staying at the thennew Pan Pacific Vancouver Hotel. They also took a trundle on the just-completed SkyTrain line from Waterfront to Patterson Station in Burnaby, and even met with dignitaries at Vancouver City Hall. But the camera-friendly couple was outshone by an even bigger royal visit almost 50 years before. The royal family was a distant and exotic presence for subjects of the Empire in the 1930s. So when King George VI and his consort Queen Elizabeth — recently portrayed in the Academy Award-winning The King’s Speech — crossed Canada by train in 1939,

the country was in awe. The Vancouver Sun reported that when the train stopped briefly in the Kootenay town of Revelstoke, it was surrounded by thousands of well-wishers. Rolling into the Lower Mainland, even larger crowds greeted them. Fervent flag-wavers lined the sidewalks as they drove around in an open-topped car to inaugurate the new Lions Gate Bridge and check out New Westminster, Surrey and Chilliwack. Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Park and Surrey’s King George Boulevard (and, later, its SkyTrain station) owe their names to this royal visit. If you fancy a palpable taste of their trip, nip into downtown’s Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. On the lobby wall, you’ll find photos of the royal visit — the couple officially opened the

swanky property — as well as a menu showing that they lunched on “stuffed eggs and chicken supreme.” It doesn’t sound nearly as appetizing as the sumptuous afternoon tea the hotel now serves. The couple also travelled by boat to Victoria; the province’s capital is named after the U.K.’s longest-serving monarch and it’s welcomed many royals over the years. Charles and Diana visited Vancouver Island in 1986, before flying on to a crowd-thronged Nanaimo to unveil a plaque that officially declared it the Harbour City. And the Queen, Prince Philip and Prince Edward were also on the Island for 1994’s Commonwealth Games, much of it staged at the University of Victoria.

First season your ribs with salt and pepper on both sides. Over high flame on your outdoor grill, completely sear both sides of the ribs until they are caramelized brown. Remove from the heat and coat both sides with your barbecue sauce of choice. Preheat your oven to 300 degrees and lay the sauce-coated racks of ribs on a baking sheet. Pierce the aluminum foil in the corner and gently pour out the liquid. Carefully remove and discard the aluminum foil. Gently brush the top of the ribs liberally with more barbecue sauce and finally broil the ribs on the tray in the oven for a few minutes until the sauce on the top has caramelized. Gently remove the ribs from the tray and transfer onto a platter by sliding a couple of long utensils (tongs, for example) underneath each rack in order to not disturb the shape of the racks. The utmost care must be used to keep the racks in

their original shape, as they will be so tender, that they will “fall off the bones”.

Dear Chef Dez, I boil my ribs to make them tender. Is there a better way that’s just as easy? Ted R., Sylvan Lake, AB Dear Ted, Boiling an ingredient in water never offers any additional flavour. I suggest seasoning and searing the meat first, and then using a braising technique to tenderize the meat. The luxurious wood-paneled Nechako rail coach where they were received during Expo ‘86 in Vancouver is now displayed at Prince George Railway & Forestry Museum. Local Ricky’s Awarded Franchisee of the Year “Whether they are still with us or have moved on, they all contributed towards this.” He said that Toni Baird, their front end supervisor, has done a great job. She was instrumental in the dinner changes they made. He would also like to thank kitchen manager Sarin Azad.

Last week, Ricky’s Restaurant at Central City Shopping Centre was named Ricky’s franchisee of the year in British Columbia. It is one of more than 25 locations. Avtar Bains and son Mike Bains are the owner operators of the restaurant. The family took over the business in 2005. Annual Ricky’s awards are given out to franchisees in a variety of categories, including operations and marketing. In past years, Ricky’s Restaurant in Central City won the award for community involvement three years in a row. And they are undoubtedly involved in their community. “We do a fundraiser every year for the Variety Club of British Columbia,” said Avtar. “We donate all proceeds from our two-day event. Last time we had our best year, raising over $10,000.” Avtar said it was gratifying to receive the award. “We are only part of that award. The Blackwood Partners Management Corporation team is another part of that award. They allow us to succeed in this environment. They provide the setting for us. “Rickys’ head office provides the other part of that.” He said the staff are also major contributors in this achievement.

032211

But this is their first time winning the franchisee of the year award. And it’s the big one, Avtar said. “This award is given for a combination of everything. “It’s a combination of sales increase, a high mark in operations, customer relations, your relationship with staff, relations with the community and innovativeness.” He explained that his restaurant was one of a leading restaurant in terms of innovativeness. “We have a more defined dinner atmosphere. We separated the day time service from the dinner service. “The attire is different, the atmosphere is much different during night time. “So we were a leading franchisee in that.”

But perhaps most importantly, Avtar thanked all of their guests. “They are the most important people. They are the majority of the reason why we won this award. They expect greatness from us and that forces us to work harder every day.” Avtar said he looks at this as an award for the entire area. “It’s an award for all of Central City. It’s a reflection of what’s happening all around us. “We’re finally coming of age. It’s no longer the Whalley stigma. In five years we’ve combated it and always tried to rise above all the negativity. “This may be a Ricky’s award, but I think it’s a Central City and Blackwood Partners award.” For more information, visit them online at www.rickyscentralcitymall.com. Central City Shopping Centre is located at 10153 King George Boulevard. Ricky’s is located at 1076 Central City.

R.C. Palmer’s Mike Zays (15) reacts to the defense of Tamanawis’s Nav Bains during early round action at the B.C. senior boys AAA hoop tourney in ❚PHOTO/Kevin Hill Langley. Palmer beat Tamanawis en route to the title.

The Surrey Eagles got their wish Michael BOOTH with a split on the road against the Sports Editor Powell River Kings to open their best-of-seven B.C. Hockey League Coastal Conference championship series on the weekend. After dropping a 4-2 decision in Game 1 Friday night, the Eagles bounced back in a big way to beat the top-ranked team in the BCHL 2-1 in overtime Saturday. “We got the split we needed and wanted,” said Eagles coach Matt Erhart. “If you get a split in the playoffs it’s always nice to win the second game. The guys all have a good feeling carry over for the trip back and it makes the day off better too. The guys were able to relax (Sunday) and get ready for the next game (Monday). “It’s a best-of-five series now and we have home ice for three of them. You obviously want to win every game but a split was what we were looking for in those first two games in Powell River.” The BCHL semifinal series could not have started worse for the Eagles as they found themselves trailing 3-0 after the first period Friday. Powell River scored two goals in the first seven minutes and then added a shorthanded marker to put the Eagles on their heels. Surrey regrouped during the first intermission and managed to cut the gap to a single goal in the middle frame thanks to tallies off the sticks of Jeff Vanderlugt and Hayden Trupp. The Eagles’ rally fell short and the Kings iced the game with an empty netter with seven second remaining in regulation time. “They came out hard in the first 10 minutes like they always do and we expected that,” Erhart said. “Trailing 3-0 like that was probably a bit unlucky for us because we had a couple of glorious chances we didn’t score on and then they came back and scored shorthanded on the same shift. So instead of trailing 2-1, we were down 3-0 and that’s a little too much to make up against a team like that. “Even though they got the empty netter at the end, it was good for our guys to know they could battle even though we were down against that team in their building.” Surrey bounced back nicely on Saturday night despite once again falling behind in the early going. The Kings opened the scoring at the 6:43 mark of the first period with a goal from Matt Garbowsky but Eagles goalie Karel St-Laurent shut the powerhouse Powell River offence down the rest of the way, setting the stage

for the Surrey comeback. The Eagles got the equalizer from Brad McGowan on a power play and then held on as St-Laurent turned aside 40 shots to carry the Birds into OT. “The tying goal on the

power play from McGowan was obviously key for our team,” Erhart said. “From there we played really solid in both ends. “It was more of a chess match for the last period because nobody wanted to make a mistake.” Forty seconds into the

extra session the Eagles got the break they were looking for when Brandon Morley intercepted a clearing attempt at the Powell River blue line. Morley dished the puck off to older brother Tyler, who then found Daniel Gentzler unguarded in the slot. The veteran

winger jammed the puck under Kings’ goalie Michael Garteig to give Surrey the win. The series now shifts to South Surrey Arena for Games 3 (played Monday night after the Now’s press deadline) and Game 4 tonight.

where they upended Kitsilano 65-64. Fleetwood followed that up with an inspired effort against Fraser Valley rival W.J. Mouat that fell four points short in a 57-52 loss. Avi Grewal scored 22 points in the win over Kits and then drained another 17 to lead all Dragons against Mouat. Dragons coach Nick Day said he was proud of his team’s showing against Mouat given the absence of two starters — Greg Rodgers (baseball commitment) and Ashtin Singh (flu). “Beating Kits was huge for us because moving up to the main draw was a big deal,” Day said. “Then we only lost by four points to Mouat in our next game, which was also big because we were missing two starters. Even without those guys we gave Mouat a really good run. We controlled the tempo for the most part and almost pulled off the upset.” The exhausted Dragons were tripped up 87-59 by Oak Bay Thursday and then lost 64-56 against Gleneagle before closing out the tourney in positive fashion with a 7464 win over Caledonia Saturday.

Palmer is a small, quick team and while they didn’t shoot particularly well either (24 of 76), they capitalized on our turnovers.” To their credit, the Wildcats didn’t stay down for long as they shook off the disappointment and went out and beat Argyle 76-66 on Thursday. Satvir Sahota sparked the Wildcats with 20 points. Playing their fourth game in four days Friday, The Wildcats sagged noticeably in a 67-33 loss to Charles Tupper but closed the tourney in style with an 89-77 win over Oak Bay Saturday. Sahota collected 25 points to finish the tourney on a high note. The Tamanawis Michael BOOTH Wildcats and the Sports Editor Fleetwood Park Dragons soaked up the atmosphere while combining to win five of 10 games at the B.C. High School Senior Boys AAA Basketball Championships in Langley last week. The Wildcats alternated wins and losses to wind up with a 3-2 record at the Langley Events Centre while Dragons started with a roar and closed with a win to finish at 2-3. Tamanawis opened the tourney with an impressive 71-41 romp over Mount Baker in Tuesday’s play-in game but ran into trouble in the first game of the main draw when they were rocked 62-44 by eventual champion RC Palmer of Richmond. Manny Dulay led the Wildcats with 13 points in the loss to Palmer, but the other numbers posted by Tamanawis were not nearly as positive — 17 of 66 shooting from the floor and 27 turnovers. “We played pretty horrible against Palmer, we didn’t play our game at all,” said Wildcats coach Surinder

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
