‘That whole beautiful green strip of forest right on the edge of the Fraser River has been nuked completely’

Another election: How we got here Ted COLLEY Staff Reporter

The Conservatives won 99 seats that time out, the NDP took just 19 and the Bloc Quebecois came out with 54 seats. One seat went to an independent. Eighteen months later, Canadians once again went to the polls to elect a minority Conservative government. Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s party held 124 seats, with the Liberals, NDP and Bloc winning 103, 29 and 51, respectively. Once again, a lone seat when to “other.” That Parliament lasted fewer than two years. On Oct. 14, 2008, the Conservatives won 143 seats (still a minority) with the Liberals, NDP and Bloc counting 77, 37 and 49 seats, respectively, while the remaining two seats were won by “other.”

A heritage ‘heartbreak’

North Delta biologist says massive clear cut ‘a real kick in the gut’

NORTH DELTA – It’s Tom ZYTARUK a heartbreaking sight for Staff Reporter North Delta residents who played as children in the forests and gullies along the Fraser River. Great swaths of tall trees have been cut down to make way for the South Fraser Perimeter Road, transforming the once lush hillside to a scene reminiscent of the cratered war fields of 1917 Belgium. Locals knew it was going to happen, but to actually see the extensive clear-cutting, and the mud and wreckage the machinery has left behind, is hard to take in.

“It’s a real kick in the pants is what it is, a kick in the gut,” says Don DeMille, a biologist and North Delta resident. “That whole beautiful green strip of forest right on the edge of the Fraser River has been nuked completely. “It’s a real blow to the heritage of Delta,” he said. “That great long continuous green strip undoubtedly houses rare species.” Southern red-backed voles and Pacific water shrews have been found in the area, he noted. “In the United States, we would have just said ‘We can’t build a highway, or we can’t build it here, we’ll have to move it,’ but we don’t have any of the legislation that the United States has for protecting rare and endangered species.” The South Fraser Perimeter Road will connect with highways 1, 15, 17, 91, 99 and the Golden Ears Bridge. It’s scheduled to be completed in 2013, with a $1.2-billion price tag. The project has been in the works for some 20

years now but the clear-cutting is fairly recent. The four-lane expressway will run about 40 kilometres from DeltaPort Way in South Delta to 176th Street in Surrey’s Port Kells, hugging the Fraser River shoreline for a large part of the route. Seven environmentally sensitive streams are in its way. DeMille worked at one time with Environment Canada. Afterward, he did some work on local streams under a program called Fisheries Renewal, and knows them well. DeMille and Delta North NDP MLA Guy Gentner recently toured the area being cleared near Gunderson (Annieville) Slough, as well as the old Glenrose Cannery site, and the pair ran into some grief from project workers. “All of a sudden we’ve got these guys not only shoving a road down our throats but telling us to get off, keep off, get out,” DeMille lamented.

SURREY – Frequent federal elections and minority governments are becoming fixtures in Canadian politics. Yet another election has been called for May 2. It will be the fourth federal election in less than seven years and, if the results follow the trend set by those previous trips to the polls, we will have a fourth minority government as well. This latest round of minority Parliaments began June 28, 2004, when the shortlived minority of Liberal Paul Martin was elected with 135 of 308 seats in the House of Commons.

Clear-cutting is ‘sad stuff’

❚ONLINE/For updates on this story, see thenownewspaper. com

Standoff in Newton

 continued from page 1 Gentner said the MOTH workers (ministry of transportation and highways) were “upset with us. We weren’t impeding.” “It’s sad stuff, very sad,” the MLA said of the clear cutting that’s already been done. “Heartbreaking.” Besides the environmental destruction, many homes have also been expropriated by the provincial Liberal government to make way for the highway – roughly 75 in the historic North Delta community of Sunbury alone. Besides these, Gentner is also concerned about what impact the clearing and construction will have, not only on established archaeological sites like St. Mungo and Glenrose, where remnants of 4,500-year-old log posts from a fish weir still jut out from the shore, but also on ravines like that of McAdam Creek. First Nations people used to winter in such ravines, he noted. “There’s probably lots of artifacts.” Gentner compares the local situation to a recent case on Vancouver Island, where an Oak Bay woman got stuck with a $600,000 archaeological bill after unknowingly building her house on an unregistered aboriginal midden. “I don’t see (the same) oversight or due diligence to what happened here,” Gentner remarked. DeMille, for his part, says that while creeks are subject to protective guidelines he’s astonished the Fraser doesn’t get the same consideration. “This is the biggest salmon stream, best salmon stream in the world, salmon river, rather, the Fraser, and there’s no protection – you can nuke it right to the shoreline because those guidelines, for convenience, were chosen not to apply to this.” Nevertheless, he fears they’ve gone too far with McAdam Creek. “That’s the part that really got me. I knew all of this was going to go on, but when I got to McAdam and I saw that the trees were cut right down and into the valley, which is not supposed to happen because of the streamside protection guidelines.” All said, DeMille figures the road project at this stage is pretty much “unstoppable,” but others disagree. Eric Doherty, spokesman for an organization called Against the Pave, believes opponents of the SFPR project still have a “pretty good chance” of stopping it. “It’s very unpopular,” he noted. According to the website gatewaysucks.org, “Mass Direct Action Against Climate Crime” will be staged against the SFPR during the Easter long weekend, beginning Friday, April 22. Its organizers are calling on all residents, students, parents, elders, streamkeepers, tree planters, guerilla gardeners, blockaders, rebels, climate defenders, farmers and freeway fighters to meet at 2 p.m. April 22, at the Annieville Supermarket at 10996 River Rd., to “Join the Wave Against the Pave!” Doherty said the group has in the past hung banners off of the bulldozers. Last October the group, armed with spades and wheelbarrows, dug up a freeway construction site in Surrey and in December used sand from a SFPR construction site to build a dike that blocked access to provincial cabinet offices. “We are ratcheting up our tactics as we go,” Doherty said. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

Police officers with guns drawn take cover behind a vehicle as they investigate a report of an armed man who was ❚PHOTO/Ted Colley allegedly holed up in a Newton townhouse at 121st Street and 66th Avenue on Monday afternoon. SURREY – Mounties Tom armed with machine guns ZYTARUK Staff Reporter surrounded a Newton townhouse Monday afternoon while negotiators tried to talk a man out. Insp. Dave Attfield of the Surrey RCMP said the man barricaded himself in the townhouse, in the 12100-block of 66th Avenue at about 12:30 p.m. after allegedly chasing a woman out of the

residence with a machete. Police found the woman in a nearby alley. “She’s fine,” Attfield said. More PHOTOS, thenownewspaper.com The Emergency Response Team was called in and the man had still not come out of the townhouse by Now press time late Monday afternoon.

As the afternoon wore on, Mounties pushed their yellow tape barricades further and further back along neighbouring streets. One Mountie warned onlookers to back off in case shots were fired. Attfield could not confirm at press time if the man was armed with a gun, but that was the rumour circulating among onlookers. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

❚MURDER TRIAL

Baby dumping mom back in court April 4

Lawyer hammers brother

SURREY – A young Surrey woman who pleaded guilty to dumping her dead baby boy in the garbage in 2010 will be back in Richmond provincial court April 4 to fix a sentencing date. Courtny Dawn Taylor, 22, gave birth in the bathroom of her boyfriend’s home in Richmond. The court heard she told him she’d miscarried. The boy’s body was thrown into a dumpster behind a school. Police later found part of the baby’s body at the Burns Bog landfill, following a three-day search. Because only part of his body was found, an autopsy couldn’t determine if he’d been born alive or dead. The Crown is seeking a conditional sentence of 18 months plus three years probation while the defence is seeking a conditional discharge, arguing that the publicity has been punishment enough. – Tom Zytaruk

SURREY – The Tom ZYTARUK defence lawyer for Staff Reporter Gary Donald Johnston turned tables on the accused’s brother Mike Johnston in court Monday, charging that he knew intimate details about Vic Fraser’s murder not because his brother told him about it, but because he was there. “You knew Vic Fraser was stabbed because you were there,” defence lawyer Darcy Lawrence charged. “You were there when Mr. Fraser was murdered, not your brother Gary.” Mike Johnston repeatedly denied the lawyer’s accusations. His older brother, 53-year-old Gary Johnston, is being tried for second-degree murder in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster. Fraser, a 43-year-old crane operator from New Westminster, was stabbed nine times in the neck when he apparently interrupted a burglary at his sister Jeanie’s bungalow in Bridgeview, on March 10, 1998. The younger Johnston testified as a Crown witness against his brother. The

court heard Mike, a crack addict, was arrested five months after Fraser was killed, on an unrelated matter, and was desperate to get back on the street for a fix. The court heard that he told police what his brother Gary had told him about the murder, and that he’d helped him burn the crime scene clothing in a friend’s fireplace in Vancouver. But Lawrence charged that it was really the other way around. “That’s why you wanted to burn the clothes, because you were there,” the lawyer charged. “No,” Mike Johnston replied. “It’s you who had everything to lose.” “No,” he shot back. His brother Gary was arrested in September 2009 – more than 11 years after Fraser was slain – while out on parole for another killing in Regina. He’s alleged to have told undercover police who were posing as gangsters that he killed Fraser. The trial continues. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

Surrey wife-killer Mukhtiar Panghali will be eligible for parole in 11 years is an aggravating factor since the act is often committed in private in the marriage home. Apart from betraying the reasonable expectation of safety within such a relationship, the murder of a spouse allows the killer the opportunity to destroy evidence before going to police. Holmes said the evidence showed Panghali took advantage of those circumstances to try and cover his tracks. “The evidence reveals chilling deliberateness is both his words and his actions,” she said.

Holmes said the impact of Manjit’s murder on her family and friends – in particular the couple’s eight-year-old daughter, Maya – must also be considered when determining sentencing. “It is difficult to imagine how Maya will work through the psychological effect of knowing her own father strangled her mother, burned her body and left it to be found by passersby,” Holmes said. She found Panghali’s participation in a 12-step program and another to help him control violence to be mitigating factors in sentencing. Along with that, Holmes noted he has no prior criminal record and there was no evidence of violence in the marriage prior to the night of the killing. – Ted Colley

NEW WESTMINSTER – A Surrey teacher who murdered his pregnant wife will serve at least 11 more years in jail before being allowed to ask for parole. Mukhtiar Panghali, 39, was sentenced to life in prison in a New Westminster courtroom Friday, with no possibility of parole before 15 years. Panghali was convicted last month of the October 2006 murder of his wife, Manjit. Panghali will get credit for the four years he spent behind bars while awaiting the outcome of his trial. He was also given a concurrent sentence of three-and-a-half years for interfering with the dead woman’s body. Panghali drove Manjit’s body to a lonely beach in Delta and set it on fire. Manjit’s elder sister, Jasmine Bhambra, said she was satisfied with the sentence. “It’s not going to bring her back, but at least he’ll be in there for a long, long time. The whole thing is really, really sad.” Bhambra said she believes her sister was murdered simply because Panghali wanted her “out of the way.” “They had talked about a divorce, but he told her divorce was out of the question.” B.C. Supreme Court Justice Heather Holmes noted the prosecution had asked for a 20-year parole disqualification, while the defence sought something between 10 and 13 years. DELTA – Since the Run for Life began nine years ago, there have been more and more reasons for organizer Shelley Donald to keep the event alive. It started as the “Relay for a Friend,” after one of Donald’s friends was diagnosed with cancer. Donald and several others organized car washes and barbecues to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. Since the event began, the number of Donald’s friends and family who have been affected by cancer has increased. “Every year our ‘why’ for doing it became a little more important,” said Donald.

This year’s Run for Life is dedicated to North Deltan Megan McNeil, who recently lost her four-year battle with cancer. McNeil was an inspiration to everyone who met her. “She was just so inspirational for such a young girl and just the fact of being diagnosed with cancer so young,” said Donald. In honour of Megan, most of the money raised this year will go the The James Fund for Neuroblastoma Research. Neuroblastoma is a cancer that usually affects children under five years old. It is responsible for eight to 10 per cent of all childhood cancers and is the most common tumor in babies.

“I’m hoping that through the run, and the Canadian Cancer Society as well, that more will find out about the James Fund and helping children’s cancer,” said Donald. The Run for Life has raised more than $50,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society since it began. There will be food and prizes donated by community businesses. The five-kilometre run kicks off at 9 a.m. on Sunday, April 3 at the Sungod Recreation Centre in North Delta. A fun one-kilometre kids run begins at 10:30 a.m. For more information on the run, or to register, visit www.runforlife.bc.ca. – Matt Law

Teachers won’t have much luck with wage demands I attended the 95th convention of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation last week and met a lot of enthusiastic, earnest, Keith BALDREY optimistic and dedicated teachers who all made a plausible case for being paid more money. They also made a solid case for improving learning conditions in their classroom. Unfortunately for them (and their students), I don’t see much hope for either a salary increase or significant changes taking place in their classrooms. Faced with a large, lingering deficit, the provincial government will not sign a new collective agreement with the BCTF that includes a wage increase, at least for a year or two. If the government were to fold and give teachers a raise, the 300,000 other public sector union employees whose contracts expire next spring would rightly expect similar increases, thus increasing the deficit even more. The BCTF has signaled it will be asking for a double-digit pay hike, which is somewhat silly given the current economic situation. No other profession is getting anywhere close to double-digit wage increases and the BCTF’s argument that its members should be paid what their counterparts are paid in Alberta and Ontario is irrelevant. The BCTF also argues the government made an exception with the B.C. Nurses’ Union and gave its members a wage increase while insisting other unions stick to a zero-zero program. Yes, the nurses did get a wage increase but they are in a unique position in which they hold considerable leverage over their employer. There is a shortage of

accordingly and jettison the unrealistic wage demands in favour of pressuring the government to step up to the plate on classroom conditions. It’s an issue that will also garner more public support. While the B.C. Liberals keep pointing out that funding for the K-12 system keeps increasing on a per-pupil basis, the reality is that schools keep being closed and teachers find their working conditions deteriorating. Parents are acutely aware of the situation and represent a powerful voting bloc come election time. Quite apart from giving teachers a big wage increase, the B.C. Liberals are on shakier ground if they ignore classroom working conditions. It was good to see Education Minister George Abbott become the first education minister in 10 years to attend a BCTF convention. He was warmly greeted by union members, who have had bitter battles with the B.C. Liberal government. Three of the last BCTF contracts were imposed by the legislature after negotiations proved hopeless. Hopefully, the good will Abbott established there will translate into actual progress in the classroom – even if teachers don’t get a raise.

••• NDP leadership candidate Adrian Dix takes great exception to my reporting last week that some of his caucus colleagues have been joking about why none of the so-called dissidents have endorsed his candidacy. The reason, they joke, is that they are afraid of Dix because he may exact revenge for the way they stabbed Carole James in the back. Nothing could be further from the truth, Dix insists. He says the party is coming together and party unity is of paramount importance to him. “I’m the unity candidate,” he told me. nurses and their skills are vitally needed. But there is no shortage of teachers, which greatly weakens the BCTF’s bargaining position when it comes to wages. However, the teachers’ union appears to have a much more reasonable argument to make when it comes to classroom learning conditions. Many teachers at the BCTF convention had poignant stories of trying to teach 30 kids, when as many as six to a dozen of them had various learning or behavioural disabilities. The government has understandably refused the BCTF’s attempts over the years to gain more formal control over classroom conditions, but this power struggle has allowed those conditions to deteriorate in many cases. The steady rise in the number of special needs students – coupled with cuts to teaching positions designed to teach those same kids – has created a crisis in some classrooms, the BCTF argues with conviction. BCTF president Betty Lambert has told me that classroom composition and not wages is the number-one issue “by far” with most teachers. Perhaps, then, the BCTF should bargain their new contract

Take railway ties in stride

Let’s ban grass-cutting too

The Editor, Re: “All railed up,” the Now, March 22. I am embarrassed by John Watkin’s outburst about the replacement of Burlington Northern Santa Fe railway ties. Why? Doesn’t BNSF have every right to repair its own property? What’s the alternative? Have the ties rot, thus risking derailment? Thankfully, it is maintaining its property. So the ties smell for a little while. It’s not permanent, for goodness sake. Is the promenade and pier the only place where people can walk for their health in White Rock and Surrey, our City of Parks? Remember the recent land slides onto the tracks, which were the fault of the City of Surrey? Was there an indignant outburst on BNSF’s part? Why antagonize the BNSF? Maybe it will retaliate by sounding the whistle non-stop all the way through White Rock, Ocean Park

The Editor, Re: “All railed up,” the Now, March 22. John Watkins addresses the health risks related to railway ties, but only does so when his walk was disturbed by an odour he wasn’t familiar with. I can’t stand the smell of freshly cut grass and suffer from extreme allergies to the same – I suggest we put a ban on lawn cutting. I also have a strong dislike for exhaust fumes from local transit buses. I sometimes get such a headache when I take in a big unfortunate whiff – I suggest we completely remove transit from our roads. I also feel the danger imposed by Little League ball players in our local baseball diamonds when they hit one out of the park. The other day I saw one hit a tree. Oh my! I suggest we ban all community sports in South Surrey and White Rock. Suffice it to say, I do not agree with this local stroller and feel if

The Editor, Re: “Surrey will go to polls for federal election this spring,” the Now’s online edition. Stephen Harper thinks that an election now is “unnecessary.” Well, I’m not surprised. Gambling his slim seven-per cent lead against the possibility of being evicted from Sussex Drive can’t be much fun. I would also bet that he would prefer not to go to the polls right after his contempt of Parliament. In fact, Harper has never shown much love for the democratic process. Given the choice, he would probably just govern indefinitely, without ever bothering with the inconvenience of elections. Unfortunately for Harper, Canadian democracy doesn’t work that way and when a government has lost the confidence of the house, an election becomes very necessary indeed. Despite the Conservative Economic Fiction Plan, Canada is deep in debt and getting deeper. Five years of generous corporate tax cuts, coupled with lavish military spending, have hurt our ability to provide necessary services to citizens. As a result, 65 per cent of Canadians now disapprove of Harper. Two thirds of the country wants a change of government. An election campaign is the best possible way to examine the alternatives to a widely unpopular

Of course election is necessary – Harper has to go

Creosote smell is normal

The Editor, Re: “All railed up,” the Now, March 22. This man must have led a very sheltered life. Growing up here as a kid the smell of the creosote ties was simply normal. We spent many hot summer days walking along the tracks to our favourite beach areas in Ocean Park. The pilings on the pier and other coastal docks have the very same odour. I worked for a wood preservative plant in the late ’70s in Burnaby, where we hand-stacked freshly treated ties in the hot summer sun for eight hours a day. We handled them right out of the retort chamber, hot and smouldering. I also worked with the track crew for Burlington Northern replacing ties when the work was all done by hand, not machines. I have never had any heath problems working with creosote.

ILLEGAL DUMPING / ABANDONED WASTE

Illegal dumping is a serious and growing problem in Surrey.

Let’s respect each other and dispose of waste properly. To find disposal locations, or report illegal dumping incidents, please visit www.surrey.ca or call Surrey’s Engineering Service Request Line at 604-591-4152.

Abandoned garbage is not only an eyesore but it impacts our City in many negative ways. Illegally dumped material makes neighbourhoods look filthy and unsanitary and also has serious effects on the environment, wildlife habitat and the ability of others to use and enjoy outdoor recreational areas.

As parents, we need to ask ourselves, are we over-protecting our children in the name of safety?

Living

Mom’sLife Most parents had a childhood full of adventure and freedoms their children will likely never know, but is this a good thing or not? It’s a question that needs some consideration. the parents in the area attended together, and you felt safe because there was always someone you could run to, even if it wasn’t your own parent. Traffic also scares me. Despite living in a relatively quiet neighbourhood with very few cars, I am scared that drivers, who do come up the back lane, aren’t careful enough when they come around our corner. It’s also why I shudder at the thought of allowing my seven-year-old son to walk to school on his own (which is only a block-and-a-half away). I feel kids are vulnerable, partly because their peripheral vision isn’t as good as adults. And also because adults on the roads have become more and more distracted while driving.

Every now and then I ask myself if I am essentially “bubble wrapping” my children from the world. Be careful on the swing. Don’t go on the road. Slow down. Never talk to strangers. Put on more sunscreen. Tighten your seat belt. The other day, my daughter and son both were trying to climb a tree in our backyard. My first instinct was to tell them to get down immediately for fear they would fall and break something. But something inside me stopped me from doing it. Perhaps I got a glimmer of myself at that age, exploring. So I kept quiet and observed. And they were just fine. If you consider yourself to

be an over-protective parent at times like me – rest assured, there are good things to be said about it as well. I am able to drive them to all their lessons, cheer at their games and be here whenever they need me. However, I now realize it is also good to let them go out on a limb every once in awhile (so to speak) without me constantly by their side. The other day at my five-year old daughter’s gym, I was watching her class from upstairs, when they took Kelley a water break SCARSBROOK and went out of sight. A few moments later they returned to the gym floor, minus my daughter. I waited and waited, looked over the railing, and then counted to 10. After what seemed like an hour (I think it was around three minutes), I quickly descended the stairs to locate her. She was having an extra long water break, and by the time I arrived on the gym floor, she was back with her fellow gym mates. So what did I think had happened to her? Was it that someone had been waiting by the gym door, for a stray child like my daughter to get close enough, so that they could steal her away to a running van waiting in the back alley? Maybe. But then my rational brain takes hold, and I am able to laugh at my foolishness. Am I crazy? Has the line between caring and smothering become blurred for parents like me? It’s a far cry from the generation I grew up in when I would be able to ride on my bike to my friend’s house, go to the corner store and have the run of the street when I was my daughter’s age. Now I can’t imagine allowing my daughter to do any of that alone. Better safe than sorry, I tell myself, as I shake my head, when my daughter asks if she can ride down the street on her bike by herself. I’m not sure what is to blame for my over-protective nature. I would like to blame all the horrible news stories that validate my worst fears every now and then, with a tale of an unsuspecting parent and an all-too vulnerable child at the hands of a kidnapper who was lying in wait. Or is it the idea that when I was a child, there was a community of adults watching over me that simply doesn’t exist today? There were designated block watchers in my neighbourhood, and everyone knew everyone’s child. There were parties that all

The heart was once also believed to be the centre of love and other emotions. Many feel a heart can break and that it can know no bounds of love. Although there is mystery surrounding matters of the heart, there is much known about the physical makeup of the heart. Here are seven facts about the human heart: Heart attacks and heart disease may be viewed as an illness that primarily affects men. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Women have more cases of heartrelated illnesses than men, and heart disease kills 500,000 American women, which is 50,000 more women than men. A bigger heart isn’t necessarily a sign a person is more inclined toward love. An enlarged heart is actually a medical condition, which can lead to heart failure. A hearty laugh is good for the heart – it can actually cause the lining of blood vessels to relax, enabling more blood to flow through for at least 45 minutes afterward. Romantic endeavours in the bedroom can be as good for the heart as a brisk 15-minute walk. Intimate acts can burn up to 200 calories and be the cardiovascular exercise a person needs. A glass of wine can be good for the heart because of the antioxidant properties in grapes. Alcohol can also thin the blood, enabling better flow. Just be sure to stick to one or two drinks per day. people who are really rude because it’s made me appreciate others who make a positive difference in my life. It has almost reached the point that if someone cuts me off in traffic or honks for no good reason, I smile inwardly and say ”thank you” to myself. Instead of the more customary hand signals, I’ve been tempted to give angry drivers a thumbs up in appreciation, but I’ve held back, realizing that my happiness was not their original intent and not wanting to add fuel to their fury. The grumpy and indifferent people in the world help me appreciate the sparklers in my life – my

friends. I could be totally healthy, physically fit, wealthy and successful, but if I didn’t have my friends, I would not be happy. My friends help me through the darkest times in my life – illness and accidents, failures and breakups, tragedy and grief. No matter what life presents, my friends bring me hope and happiness. Sometimes we have friends who justify our bad behaviour and bad habits. In their company, we may drink more and abuse our bodies more. In fact they are like alcohol and recreational drugs, we associate them with good times while they really bring us down. These are our travelling companions on the road to self-destruction. You can recognize your true friends because you’re better together than you would be apart.

Real friends bring out the best in one another. We help each other achieve our potentials. We can do more together than we could alone. My best friends know the real me. They sometimes see me better than I see myself. They recognize the best in me, remind me of my dreams and push me to be my best. They recognize the worst in me, call me on it but love me nonetheless. My best friends tell me the truth – even if I don’t want to hear it – because I need to know. Happiness is being in the presence of a friend. HOW 2 ... shop for a lawnmower

things to know 1. Consider the size of your lawn. For

lawns less than 1/2 an acre, choose a 20” to 22” mower. For lawns between a 1/2 acre and 3/4 acre, choose a 21” to 22” mower with higher horsepower.

2. Also consider the type of terrain. For

hills, use a self-propelled lawn mower. For rough terrain, a high-wheel mower provides easy maneuverability. For mowing around obstacles, a rear bagger allows maneuverability for faster, easier work.

3. Push mowers are a fine choice if you

want exercise. However, if you have a larger yard (more than 10,000 square feet), rough terrain, health concerns or are worried about being out in the sun too long, consider a selfpropelled lawn mower.

4. Be aware of some of the

common terms: Mulching — cuts grass clippings into fine pieces that can help fertilize your lawn. Rear Bagger — collects clippings for an immaculate lawn. A rear bag is preferable to a side bag for use around fences, trees and obstacles. Side Discharge — clippings are dispersed back onto the lawn. Use if you have few obstacles to deal with or to cut high grass.

5. Also, consider the 3-In-1 option.

This unit can be converted from side discharge to rear bagger. A 3-in-1 lawn mower is capable of performing mulching, bagging and side discharge functions.

The type of lawnmower that is best for you depends on the size of your lawn, the size of your budget and your specific mowing needs. Make sure you understand your options to ensure you choose a mower that best suits you and your yard.

Are you tired of that old lawnmower that you picked up from a garage sale, or are you buying a lawnmower for the first time? Sometimes it is hard to decide what you need (or want) when it comes to lawnmowers. You will run across a variety of options, different qualities and a wide range of prices when shopping for a lawnmower. Learning about the options, and what they are intended for, will help you to choose the right product. There are many factors to consider that can affect lawn care needs, such as where you live, what the terrain is like and the size lawn you have, not to mention grass type and how fast it grows. Likewise, not all mowers have the same features or offer the same mowing options or performance. When you factor in environmental concerns as well as how much time, effort and money you are able to expend in caring for your lawn, choosing

the right mower may seem like a daunting task. At Fraser Valley Equipment, they can help make this task an easy one. But only you can make the final decision and choose which unit is the best for all your needs. Be sure to play with the mower, sit on the garden or lawn tractor and test every mechanism you can. Try the seat on the

riding mower, pull the recoil starter on the gas mower, operate the bail that adjusts the speed on the self-propelled mower. Does the mower convert easily between cutting operations? Do the wheels adjust easily or take some effort? Look at your choices. Ask questions. Only then can you be assured that the mower you buy will be the mower that best fits your personal needs.

HOW 2 ...have Fruit Fresh from Your Backyard!

At Art’s Nursery we can help you get started on your Edible Landscaping project! We are located in the Port Kells area of Surrey and have been in business for almost 40 years.

Take an honest look at your drainage, soil type and sun conditions. There are fruits you can grow in almost any situation. Pay attention to where the sun shines in your yard bearing in mind seasonal variations and leaf canopy. Dig a test hole in the chosen planting site and observe the soil type. Fill the hole with water and note how long it takes for the water to drain; you’ll want the water to drain in less than 30 minutes. Avoid planting in areas that had puddling during the winter.

2. Choose the right plant for the

right place! Based on your observations, choose the right fruit. We can help you if you’re not sure. Most apples, pears and plums, cherries and raspberries and blueberries require six hours of sunlight a day to produce their full sugars. Huckleberries, salmonberries and other native berries along with some varieties of

blueberries and a handful of heritage apples can make do with a bit less light. Balcony only? No problem, many fruits are happy in a large pot including dwarf apple trees.

3. It takes two to tango. For most

fruits you’ll need a second one as a pollinizer. For example if you have a Heritage Cox Orange Pippin apple tree, a Liberty apple tree which blooms at the same time would be a good choice for a pollinizer. If you have a Reka blueberry, a Bluecrop which blooms close to the same time would be a good choice. There are some self fertile fruit varieties, ask us about them, but you will produce much more than double the fruit with a second variety planted nearby.

4. Encourage pollinators. If you

want fruit, you will want to encourage bees and other pollinators. There are more than 80 different types of native bees alone, each one having a favorite food, not to mention

the flies (yes, I said flies) that pollinate your pears. This means avoid pesticides period. Plant flowering covercrops and perennials to feed them throughout their active season; this will encourage them to stick around. Don’t be too tidy in your garden in the fall. Many species overwinter in the hollow stems of spent perennials. Weeds are not always bad. Clover and dandelions, are favorite foods of many species of bees. Expect to see some bugs on your fruit. A healthy garden has a healthy bug population.

5. Choose a healthy plant. Inspect your chosen fruit plants. You will want one free from wounds and disease with a good root system. Avoid pot bound plants or those with twisting or girdling roots. Go early and take the time to choose the right plant. Do your research and ask questions. Go ahead, we love to help!

There are several reasons why one should have a Will. When you with without a will: 1) If you have children under the age of 19 you give up your rights to appoint a guardian for your children. you do not know who might volunteer to be a guardian, nor do you know who will be appointed. 2)Without aWill, your estate does not have an Executor. An administrator then has to be appointed by the court and this process takes time. 3) You do not have control of who gets what from your estate, when, or how. Every adult should have aWill; surprisingly, many don’t . There are limited drug therapy options for Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS. As a result, there are many frustrated people suffering with this condition. Research indicates that IBS is caused by excessive activity of the nerves and muscles surrounding the colon and by an overgrowth of bacteria within the colon. A recent study showed that high doses of certain friendly bacteria, known as probiotics, resulted in significant reduction of IBS symptoms.

Why do I need a will?

In our experience, avoidance of certain foods for a specific period of time often results in significant reduction or elimination of symptoms. To diagnose which foods are involved we will use food allergy testing or elimination and challenge diets, where foods are eliminated and then reintroduced in a controlled manner. Do not let your IBS ruin your life – there are effective natural therapies like diet therapy and probiotics.

How long do dentures last? This is a very common question, and the answer depends on many things. If the dentures are worn in your pocket, they will probably last forever, however dentures are and were meant to be worn in the mouth. The best thing denture wearers can do if their denture is more than 3 years old and it has not been looked at by a dental professional, is to call our office. I’d be happy to see you and give you some complimentary advice. Don’t wait until you feel like something is wrong - that’s how irreversible damage to the structure that supports the denture can occur, and that is exactly what we would like to prevent. Anti-oxidants – all the confusion – what is it all about? Anti-oxidants (A/O) eliminate free radicals (FR). FR occur with every enzyme process in the body & from the food & water we ingest. We need more A/O than ever before. A/Os do a variety of other functions as well. There are a wide variety of A/Os; that come in many foods, i.e., acai berry, blueberries. The Master A/O is made in every cell of your body. When taken in food or supplement, it breaks down into 3 amino acids, a sulfur and a thiol – & you excrete the parts you really need b) even if it stayed whole, it doesn’t transport into the cell. However, there is a composition patent that provides all of the nutrients, in the right ratios, so that cells can make huge amounts, quickly, ie., 292% increase within two months. Glutathione (GSH) re-cycles itself & all other A/Os, – so you need a lot less of them. In addition, it is involved in numerous other functions throughout the body. If a cell doesn’t have enough GSH, it willdie. It protects your DNA from becoming cancerous; & your mitochondria, which produces the fuel of the cell; it is an anti-inflammatory & a chelator; it extends your teleomeres (anti-aging); it is involved directly or indirectly with every hormone in the body; & much more. MOA, CCHP, Certified Colon Hydrotherapy Practitioner

What are the benefits of a having a Colon Hydrotherapy treatment? There are many benefits to colon hydrotherapy, but the most important benefit is relieving the body of toxic build-up.

Whereas accumulated fecal matter promotes the growth of undesirable bacteria and their toxic by-products, a clean colon allows beneficial bacteria to proliferate. These beneficial bacteria manufacture important vitamins, including biotin, which is essential for the proper breakdown of carbohydrates, proteins and fats; cobalamin (vitamin B12), which promotes red blood cell formation and assists in the production of neurotransmitters (chemicals that transmit nerve impulses); and vitamin K, a key factor in normal blood-clotting and in the development of healthy bone structures. Colon Hydrotherapy improves muscle tone and facilitates peristalsis’ movement in the bowel, which is so beneficial to the sluggish colon. This process provides relief from and prevents chronic constipation. It also helps to remove stagnant fecal matter, thus eliminating bacteria. toxins, gas, mucus parasites, and cellular debris which allows the colon to perform its natural function of absorption more effectively. Despite daily elimination, many people are not aware that they may have a bowel problem.Very often, the complete length of the colon is impacted with old, hardened fecal matter leading only a narrow channel for small, softer feces to pass through.

Midget teams win big

Hurricanes drop notch The Punjab Hurricanes have been bumped from premier league to division 1 after Sunday’s 5-0 loss to Columbus FC. The game was a do-ordie for the Hurricanes, who needed the win to stay in the premier league. With 25 minutes to go in the second, Columbus scored on a counterattack. The Hurricanes sacrificed the defence to try and tie the game but their gamble backfired and Columbus scored four in the last 10 minutes.

Three Surrey midget hockey teams came home with medals last week. The tier 1 team took the provincial title after beating Cloverdale 4-3 last Wednesday. Surrey opened the game with three goals in the first period and one in the second. Cloverdale came back in the second period, putting two in the Surrey net. Surrey hung on in the third to take the win despite another goal by Cloverdale. The midget tier 4 team took top spot in their division Thursday after beating Saanich 5-1 at home. Scoring started in the second with Surrey getting two. The third period scoring was opened by Surrey, but Saanich answered with one. Surrey’s midget tier 2 team took bronze in last Wednesday’s game, beating Port Alberni 3-1. Goaltending made the difference right from the start. Surrey’s goalie, Brendan Duff, stopped Port Alberni from taking an early lead after a quick shot in the first minute of play.

Clean sweeps for Surrey teams

It was perfect Matt LAW weekend for the Now Contributor Surrey United soccer club, which took top spots in the Imperial Cup final. The women maintained their perfect record this season by shutting out the North Shore Renegades in a 3-0 win at South Surrey Athletic Park on Sunday. The game was scoreless after the first half, but Randee Hesmus made it 1-0 for Surrey in the first three minutes of the second. Playing off the momentum, Katie Thorlakson scored at the 68th minute, giving the team some security. By the end of the game Surrey was dominating and put a final goal in

the net with some nice headwork by number 19, Karm Jawanda. It was an all Surrey showdown for the men’s final later that afternoon at Cloverdale Athletic Park. Surrey United Firefighters were up against ICST Pegasus in a fastpaced match. Angus Burk of Surrey United opened the scoring in the first half. Pegasus came back to take control of the game but couldn’t get anything past Surrey United’s keeper, Paul Shepard. Pegasus’ Niko Marcina finally beat Shepard with 15 minutes to go, tying the game 1-1. United wasn’t going to have any of that and got lucky with a

bounce off the crossbar, which Niall Thompson buried in the net with his head. “Towards the end we just kept fighting on and a chance came up and I capitalized on it and that created more space,” said Thompson. United got lucky again in the final few minutes with a breakaway effort by Rizal Ganief, who managed to get it easily past Pegasus’ keeper Amar Dhinsa to finish the game 3-1. Both teams move on to the provincial cup. “I thought it was a great game and it was a great day. It’s going to be interesting going into provincials if we meet up with them again,” said Thompson.

❚ SPORTS ❚COASTAL CONFERENCE

Surdel Girls Soccer Club

Eagles out of playoffs with 4-1 loss

First to Hadwin, who hails from Abbotsford and is playing on the Canadian Tour (which smartly is playing where it’s nice and warm before heading back to Canada). Bogotá was the city and Hadwin was hotter than the weather. He went out and shot a sizzling 62 on Saturday to take a six-stroke lead going into the final day. He coasted to a final round three-under-par— a six-stroke win. He collected over $23,000 for his efforts and, more importantly, it has to be a huge confidence boost. Meanwhile Laird, the pride of Scotland, went out and won the Arnold Palmer PGA Tournament on a really tough Bayhill course with a 75! I know – a 75; it just doesn’t happen. Right. He was comfortably moving along when he put his shot into the water on 11. However with par fives being his friend all week and with new leader Steve Marino falling back after a double bogey on 17, Laird went into the lead and covered 87 feet of green with two putts on 18 to win by one. Most amazingly, it was his two birdies and two pars on the final holes that clinched it for him. That also clinched the day for Scotland. Paul Lawrie of Scotland started the day with a win on the European Tour, and Laird finished it for Scotland with a midnight win (Scottish time). Tiger Woods looked like he was going to get his second top-10 of the last two weeks but it was not to be and he finished 24th. That will be Tiger’s last tournament until he tees it up in The Masters. Could Sergio Garcia finally be getting his game into shape? He finished in the top 10 for the second week, and the wonder kid who has had more ups and downs than the PNE Coaster is finally starting to see his putts go in the hole—his Achilles heal. On the Nationwide Tour, Brett Wetterich held on to win by one. Jon Mills was the closest Canadian in 13th place. Chip Shots Vancouver and British Columbia are most definitely the golf capital of Canada for 2011. The PGA Tour is coming, with the RBC Canadian Open scheduled for Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club from July 21-24, right after the British Open. Also scheduled for our part of the world is the Canadian Junior Boys Championship, to be played at Morgan Creek, the Canadian Junior Girls at Quilchena (now known as the QClub) in Richmond, and the Canadian Women’s Amateur, which will be played at Duncan Meadows on Vancouver Island. them 21-7. The Eagles came back with a stronger third period, outshooting the Kings 17-10 but struggled to put the puck in the net. Schuler got his second goal of the night when he beat St-Laurent unassisted, just after the six-minute mark. Eagles forward Daniel Gentzler

This week’s hot topics: Adam Hadwin’s blowout win on the Canadian Tour in Bogotá, Colombia, and Martin Laird’s final round, which went from everything is OK, to shocking collapse, to everything is OK.

After forcing a game six in the coastal conference against the Powel River Kings, the Surrey Eagles lost 4-1 at home on Friday – ending their playoff chances. It looked as though the Kings would walk away with the series in game five, but the Eagles came back to win the game 3-1. The sixth game didn’t go as well. The Eagles were outplayed in the first period with the Kings outshooting them 16-6. But Powel River couldn’t get anything by Eagles’ goalie Karel St-Laurent. Scoring opened in the second period when Kings’ forward Daniel Schuler put one past St-Laurent only three minutes in. The Kings got their second just shy of four minutes after the first goal. The Kings outplayed the Eagles for a second period outshooting

SUDOKU Fun By The Numbers

Like puzzles? Then you'll love Sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your Sudoku savvy to the test!

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

are built into its rear seat, protecting the outboard seating positions, plus it has front seat knee bolster bags that both protect and help to correctly position the front seat occupants in a collision. It’s the first passenger car to receive maximum scores (for occupant protection) in both the European frontal offset collision and the side-impact crash (against a moving deformable barrier) tests. The European New Car Assessment Program (EuroNCAP) has been providing crash test ratings since 1997. The base engine in the Cruze, a 1.8-litre, four-cylinder (LS trim), and its optional 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder (LT and LTZ trim) produce an identical (138) maximum horsepower number. The performance difference is in the higher torque output (148 lb.-ft) of the turbo engine and the lower engine speed (1,850 rpm) at which it’s provided. The 1.4-litre’s turbocharger is a unique design that’s incorporated into the exhaust manifold as a single component. This saves weight, helps the engine to warm up faster and reduces exhaust emissions. Both engines run on regular gas and come with six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions. In addition to more power at low engine speeds, the turbo engine also provides better fuel economy. There’s a delayed release on the turbo/ manual combination, which will come as a “Cruze Eco” edition with a special wheel and aero package and it’s expected to achieve a 5.0-litre/100km highway fuel economy rating. The Cruze comes

package, rear park assist and climate control air conditioning. The LT trim line is expected to account for 70 per cent of sales and there’s an extra bonus if you order a Cruze before next Jan. 10. A “first to Cruze” program gives you the choice of a free set of winter tires or an Apple iPad with OnStar MyLink Apps installed. GM is listening to customers a lot differently than in the past, according to Williams. And the Chevrolet Cruze design team engineers sure did their homework. – By David Chao and Bob McHugh

Do you have a Chevette or an older Cavalier in your past car ownership history (most of us do) and perhaps a few not-sofond memories to go with them? Even GM admits that maybe its older compact car creations weren’t the best – but the new Chevrolet Cruze is very different. Kevin Williams, new president and managing director of GM Canada, points to the hot-selling Chevrolet Equinox, the GMC Terrain, the Buick Regal and Buick LeCrosse as product examples of the new GM. “These are proof points that GM can deliver ... something that we haven’t always delivered on in the past,” conceded Williams. No longer concerned about being No. 1 in the market place, the focus of the new GM is on having sustainable profitable growth. “No more chasing market share, with incentives or unprofitable fleet business,” said Williams. “If we are number two, but profitable – we are comfortable with that. The core vision of the new GM is designing, building the world’s best vehicles.” While Cruze is new to Canada, it’s actually a proven product that’s already sold in 60 countries around the world. Near-midsize interior dimensions make the Cruze the roomiest car in its class and it comes with two new high-efficiency engines that allow it to offer impressively frugal fuel economy numbers. Overall fit and finish is also on par with the best in this market sector and particularly impressive is the level of exterior noise suppression. Although GM was not able to supply any comparison numbers (to my surprise), cabin quietness would get my vote for best in class and as good as some far more expensive vehicles. Cruze also offers segment-leading passive safety features with 10 standard airbags, which is four more than generally considered the norm. Two extra airbags
