SURREY – The City of Surrey and the Surrey school district are partnering to reopen the former East Clayton elementary school in September 2011 to help ease overcrowding at Hazelgrove Elementary in Cloverdale. The city will lease the East Clayton Elementary school building, which has five classrooms, to the school district until the end of June 2013. The reopened school will serve as an annex to Hazelgrove Elementary. “Our board has recognized the need for a new elementary school in the East Clayton area of Cloverdale for some time and it continues to be at the top of our board’s five-year capital plan submission to the Ministry of Education,” McNally said. She praised city officials for helping the school district deal with chronic overcrowding. “Reusing the former East Clayton school space with the assistance of the City of Surrey is another example of how our board is doing its best to manage our district’s growth while faced with a lack of new school funding.” Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts said Surrey’s school district has grown by 4,000 students in the last four years.
SURREY – Fellow musicians and total strangers are rallying around guitar player Michael Taylor after he was attacked at a Scott Road bus loop on the weekend. The Acoustic Groove band member was on his way home from a gig in Vancouver early Saturday when he was attacked on the sidewalk, after sharing a bus ride home with his alleged attackers. He went to hospital with cuts and abrasions and is now resting at home. Band member Tony Chamberlist said Taylor was “clobbered from behind...before he passed out, he felt a rain of fists down on him.” On the bus, some racial comments were made to Taylor, who is black, but police are not recommending charges under hatecrime legislation.

How young buckaroos can help feed Surrey’s hungry Marilyn Herrmann, executive director of the Surrey Food Bank, says with the price of rice – not to mention fuel – going up, the food bank is always looking at creative ways to stretch dollars and raise more donations to cover these added costs. One new initiative is the Kids Can
Rodeo. The challenge is for kids to form teams and collect donations of canned goods, then build a display at the Cloverdale Rodeo and Exhibition, based on a food bank theme or a rodeo theme. Read the full story and find out how you can help on page 7.

Teen charged with Laura Szendrei’s murder appears in court via video

SURREY – Mike and Rachael Szendrei had little to say as they walked out of Surrey provincial court Monday. “Bad times, bad times,” the grieving mother told reporters. The couple’s daughter, Laura Szendrei, who was fatally attacked in North Delta’s Mackie Park last September, would have been 16 on Saturday. The family marked what would have been a milestone birthday as best they could. “We blew out candles and let off balloons,” Laura’s aunt, Sharon Cicozzi, said outside the courthouse. The teen’s family also went to Mackie Park to see a bench the SurDel Girls Soccer Team had raised cash for, in her niece’s memory. The Szendrei family attended court Monday for another quick appearance by the young North Delta man accused of first-degree murder in the Burnsview Secondary student’s death. This time it was by video, and only for a few seconds. The accused was 17 when Laura was killed, so it is illegal to publish his name as the Youth Criminal Justice Act shields his identity. Laura died in hospital on Sept. 26, a day after she was viciously beaten in broad daylight while walking along a path in the Mackie Park forest, in

Monday’s hearing was initially to fix a date to arrange for a bail hearing. Crown prosecutor Wendy Stephen handed over to the teen’s defence lawyer a computer disc containing roughly 8,000 pages of documents resulting from the Delta police investigation, for review. The accused is expected to be back in court on April 26 to set a date for either a bail hearing or trial, Stephen said. The Crown plans to seek an adult sentence if he’s found guilty. That would work out to life without eligibility to apply for parole until 25 years are served. Under the YCJA,
a first-degree murder conviction carries a sentence of 10 years, with six in custody. Police have not released how Laura was killed. There’s speculation a baseball bat was used but police have not confirmed this. There was no sign of sexual assault. A Walk, Run and Roll event in Laura Szendrei’s memory will be held this Sunday, April 10, in North Delta. Cicozzi said about 750 people have registered so far, but organizers figure that number will swell to about 2,000. The five- and 10-kilometre event with start at Burnsview Secondary school at 11 a.m. and end at the same place, at 1 p.m. Money raised will go to the Laura Szendrei Memorial Scholarship Fund Society. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com
❚IN COURT/Judge hears closing arguments in Vic Fraser murder trial
Crown’s witnesses ‘unsavoury,’ says defence Tom ZYTARUK Staff Reporter
NEW WESTMINSTER – Defence lawyer Georgia Docolas advised a B.C. Supreme Court judge on Monday not to make too much of her client Gary Johnston’s confession to undercover cops that he killed Vic Fraser in Surrey in 1998. The statement was made during a so-called “Mr. Big” scenario involving police who were posing as gangsters. Citing case law, Docolas stated it stands to reason that when police set up in essence a job interview for a contract killer involving a “significant inducement” of cash, that there’s considerable risk the candidate might exaggerate their qualifications. Johnston, 53, is being tried for second-degree murder for the March
SURREY – Earth Day is such a hit in Surrey that this year the annual party will stretch over two days. Party for the Planet, the city’s earth-centred celebration presented by Coast Capital Savings, is slated to run Friday, April 15 from 4-9 p.m. and Saturday, April 16 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The free event will include a visit from Sesame Street’s Elmo, Canada’s first ever Bike Powered Main Stage and Surrey first Green Zip Line and Aerial Element System – a carbon-neutral physical adventure. The entertainment lineup for Friday features the Freshest DJ Collective and the Creation Story by KlaHow-Eya Youth Theatre Players. Saturday will see performances from Spirit of the West, Hannah Georgas, Aidan Knight, George Leach as well as Bobs & Lolo, Tambura Rasa, Shane Philip and Greg Sczebel. 1998 stabbing death of the 43-yearold Sapperton crane operator. The trial was heard in New Westminster. Fraser was stabbed nine times in the neck after interrupting a burglary at his sister’s bungalow in Bridgeview. Docolas argued that Johnston did not provide details to the undercover operatives that corroborated the crime scene, and that the Crown relied on the testimony of unsavoury witnesses to make its case. In his closing remarks, Crown prosecutor Lothar Kiner argued that despite “unsavoury pasts” of two key Crown witnesses, their accounts were made independently of one another and yet “corroborate each other remarkably.” Kiner was referring to the accused’s younger brother, Mike Johnston, a crack cocaine addict
who told police his older brother confessed to him the crime in detail, and Richard Smith, who had helped Johnston dispose of the body of a caretaker Johnston killed in Regina in November 1998. Smith told the court that Johnston confessed to the Surrey murder right after he had dispatched of the caretaker in a similar way by stabbing him in the neck. Moreover, Kiner noted, Johnston had confessed “with relish” to Fraser’s murder to undercover police officers posing as gangsters, when he was out on parole for the Regina homicide. Justice Robert Crawford must now decide what evidence is admissible in the case as the entire trial was heard in a voir dire, which is essentially a trial within a trial. The case was heard by Crawford without a jury.
SURREY – Make room in the trophy case for Surrey’s latest award, a Best Cultural Event win for last year’s Fusion Festival. The award was presented at the recent Canadian Event industry Awards Gala in Toronto. The Surrey Fusion Festival is B.C.’s largest multicultural celebration and last year featured more than 75 artists and headliners from around the world performing on four stages in Holland Park. Food and culture from a variety of countries around the globe were presented in 30 pavilions. Nearly 90,000 attended last year’s event. “The Fusion Festival is a signature event that brings people together to experience the music, dance, food and heritage of more than 50 distinct cultural groups while elevating awareness and appreciation within our multicultural community,” said Coun. Barinder Rasode, chair of the city’s diversity and inclusion advisory committee.
“Nasty” Dan sentenced to seven years SURREY – A Surrey man has become the second person in B.C. to be sentenced on a charge of commission of an offence for criminal organization. Daniel “Nasty” Michael MacNeil was sentenced to seven years in prison recently, in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver, after being found guilty of conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, commission of an offence for criminal organization, and possession prohibited and restricted firearms with ammunition. MacNeil and associates were the focus of a 15month drug trafficking investigation dubbed Project “E” Phaser. Insp. Trent Rolfe, senior investigator in the Surrey RCMP’s plainclothes unit, called MacNeil’s conviction “a major blow to the criminal commerce that flourishes when penalties are not severe.” Rolfe said the judge’s ruling confirms the “abhorrence” the public has for drug traffickers. Criminal organizations, he noted, thrive on profit obtained “from inflicting misery onto society and the court has sent a strong and clear message that will not be tolerated. We are very pleased.”
Man guilty of manslaughter in Surrey attack NEW WESTMINSTER – A Burnaby man has been found guilty of manslaughter in the death of a Surrey man he’d punched in the face at a Whalley beer and wine store two years ago. Faris Omerovic, 20, was found guilty Friday in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster and will be back in court on June 30 for a sentencing hearing. The victim, 54-year-old Sher Singh, was visiting an employee at Donegal’s Liquor Barn in the 12000-block of 96th Avenue on March 1, 2009 when he spotted Omerovic shoplifting and grabbed his arm. Omerovic punched Singh in the face, knocking him over, and Singh’s head hit the ground. Omerovic drove off and Singh also went home, where a family member found him dead in his room the following afternoon. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team arrested Omerovic almost a year later, after identifying him from the liquor store’s security tapes. – Compiled by staff

SURREY – A Surrey Marisa BABIC Staff Reporter high school student has won a chance to compete with other science wizards from around the world. Nick Johnston, a Grade 10 student at Semiahmoo Secondary, is one of the 20 students on TEAM Canada-ISEF who will represent the country at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair that will be hosted in Los Angles, California from May 8 to 13. A program of the Society for Science & the Public, the challenge is the world’s largest pre-college science competition. As part of Team Canada-ISEF, Nick will be competing against 1,600 young scientists from nearly 60 countries for more than US$4 million in scholarships and prizes. “It’s quite exciting. I get to take a trip and I get to meet a lot of people from around the world,” Nick said. Nick’s project, entitled “Computer Aided Telepathic Communication” aims to determine whether it’s possible to build word and letter combinations and communicate them using brain waves – essentially allowing people to communicate without speaking. In devising his theory, his first task was to reduce the roughly 500,000 words that make up the English language to 40 of the most basic sounds. Through repetition of a single sound he’s attempting to map a software wave with an imprint of that sound, with the goal of eventually stringing two or three sounds to form words. He’s still working out the kinks.
Nick said his project is based on existing science that’s currently used in medical applications and includes some original features. The ultimate goal is to enable a person to use a keyboard without touching it. “I envision one NICK JOHNSTON day instead of using a mouse and keyboard to play a video game, you can just imagine playing a video game and you’ll be playing one and I really think there’s potential for that,” he said. An A student, Nick is keeping his fingers crossed that a good showing at the international science fair will help to open doors to top technology schools. Doug Cooper, a manager at Intel of Canada, said the company promotes the competition to help advance Canada’s future technology workers. The company has sponsored the Canada-ISEF competition for 14 years. “Our economy is moving toward a direction that requires that we encourage our children to pursue these kinds of skills and career opportunities,” Cooper said. Cooper said winning at the fair is about more than just glory. “For a lot of them, the scholarships to a leading university in North America aren’t cheap and this can often make the difference for them about what kind of school they get into, so it’s really important.”

❚ NEWS ❚CHARITY/Rodeo fundraiser helps Surrey organization stretch dollars
Food bank feels pinch as cost of rice, fuel skyrockets Marisa SURREY – The rising BABIC price of food threatens to Staff Reporter take a bite out of the Surrey Food Bank’s tight budget. Executive director Marilyn Herrmann said the escalating cost of staples, which she buys in bulk to stretch tight dollars, will soon begin to erode the agency’s purchasing power. Prices haven’t skyrocketed yet, but Herrmann said they are inching upward and every expectation is that they’ll continue to climb. Rice is a key staple at the food bank. Herrmann buys 40-pound sacks of rice about every eight weeks. She’s currently paying $23 a sack but her supplier has warned her that the price will probably rise to $25 per sack by the time she makes her next purchase in May. “I know it sounds small, a couple of
dollars on a bag of rice, but when you’re buying three and four skids and there’s 40 bags on a skid that’s $80, times four,” Herrmann said. The supplier has advised her to stock up before the prices go up, but storage is a problem. MARILYN HERRMANN “Our challenge always is space. We don’t have the space to put 10 skids of rice in here at the old price,” she said. The rising cost of staples isn’t the only factor creating more financial pressure on the food bank. Higher gas prices at the pumps are also nibbling away at the agency’s operating funds.
To help reduce the cost of fill-ups, volunteer drivers are now much more strategic about their pickups of food donations and map their routes to save gas. The food bank’s fleet includes a oneton truck that makes up to 20 pickups a day, a larger five-ton truck that picks up food industry donations and travels as far as Langley, plus vans that are used for the agency’s hamper delivery program. While these efficiency savings might not seem significant, Herrmann noted that when you’re driving around in a city as large as Surrey, those miles quickly pile up. The food bank spends about $1,500 a month on gas to fuel its fleet of vehicles. These growing pressures to stretch dollars are forcing the Surrey Food Bank, which feeds about 15,000 people in Surrey and North Delta every month, to come up
with more fundraisers. One new initiative is the Kids Can Rodeo, a partnership between the Surrey Food Bank and the Cloverdale Rodeo and Exhibition Association. The challenge is for kids to form teams and collect donations of canned goods, then build a display at the rodeo, during the May long weekend, based on a food bank theme or a rodeo theme. “It’s a fun way for kids to support the food bank and be involved with the rodeo,” Herrmann said. “We’re hoping for 20 teams.” For a donation of a toonie, rodeo visitors will get a chance to vote for the best display. For more details about the Kids Can Rodeo visit the Surrey Food Bank’s website at www.surreyfoodbank.org.

Police say attack on musician not a hate crime; account set up to help

Instead, police recommend charges of assault causing bodily harm. Three boys and two girls, all between age 14 and 18, were involved in the incident, police say. “On the surface, it doesn’t appear to be a hate crime,” said Surrey RCMP spokesperson Corp. Drew Grainger, adding
investigators continue to review videotape of the attack and are talking to witnesses. Taylor and his wife expect the birth of a second child any day now. Chamberlist describes the musician as a “kind and gentle soul” who has a history of stepping up to protect others in a non-violent way. “Another passenger was being harassed by these kids, and Mike just stood his
ground,” he said. “We just want Mike to get better,” he added. “Every time we play at the hotel (venue in Vancouver), we ask to give Mike a ride home, but he’s always been very independent, and transit is his form of transportation.” Chamberlist said he and fellow Acoustic Groove band member Diane Lines are
amazed by the number of people who’ve called to show support for Taylor, with offers of cash donations and replacement instruments. During the attack, Taylor’s guitar went missing but has since been found and held as evidence. An account has been set up at Vancity to assist Taylor, account number 427245 at branch 18 in Coquitlam.

MP Hiebert’s income-splitting bill ‘fluff,’ says NDP opponent Keeping Ted COLLEY Staff Reporter
SURREY – The Conservative income-splitting plan for families announced by Prime Minister Stephen Harper is based on a private member bill drafted by a local MP. “It was my private member’s bill, M638,” said Conservative MP Russ Hiebert (White RockSouth Surrey-Cloverdale). “I introduced it in early February and if we weren’t into an election, we’d be debating it in the House next week.” The proposal would allow a spouse with higher earnings to transfer income to the spouse with a lower income to take advantage of a lower tax bracket. A family with one income earner making $70,000 per year would pay more tax than a family with two earners making $35,000 each. The incomesplitting program, available to families with children under 18 years, is intended to eliminate that imbalance. “Our party predicts about 1.8 million Canadian families will benefit and I estimate about

15,000 families in my riding will save money on their taxes. “It will mean about $1,300 in additional tax savings for the average family,” Hiebert said. He calculates the change would cost the federal government about $2.5 billion in revenues, but said he’s confident that can be absorbed without cutting services. There’s a hitch, though. The income splitting wouldn’t go into effect until the federal budget is balanced. The Conservatives predict that won’t happen until 2015. See LETTERS, page 11 NDP candidate, Susan Keeping, isn’t impressed. “It’s not going to kick in for four years. It’s actually a lot of fluff. Why are you now bringing up something that won’t take effect until 2015? There’s no guarantee they’ll balance the budget and there’s no guarantee they’ll still be in power then,” Keeping said. “I don’t understand why you would begin a campaign with such weak policy.” tcolley@thenownewspaper.com

NDP has a difficult choice when it comes to leadership Will NDP members choose a leader based on who is best suited to get the party elected to government, or who best repreKeith sents their politi- BALDREY cal philosophy or ideology? If the former is the basis for voting, Mike Farnworth should be the hands-down winner. If it’s the latter, then Adrian Dix may prove the victor. The latest Ipsos-Reid poll shows that Farnworth beats his rivals every which way when it comes to who stands the best chance of attracting voters to the NDP. The others aren’t even close to matching his popularity with the general public, or with people who voted NDP in the last election. He is also the only candidate who, when pitted head to head with Premier Christy Clark when it comes to who would make the best premier, offers a competitive contest. The others all lag Clark’s popularity by a wide margin. The online poll was conducted March 31-April 4, and with a sample size of 700 the margin of error is plus or minus 3.7 per cent. The poll is simply the latest one to show that Farnworth continues to best his rivals in general popularity. But will these polls influence the 28,000 or so party members when they begin voting for a new leader next week? The question of winning power versus maintaining ideological positions has long vexed many NDP members. Some seem more comfortable in the politically safe atmosphere of Official Opposition rather than in government, which requires constant compromising on many issues to maintain power. Farnworth is very much the most centrist candidate, which explains his broader appeal. Dix

sus 22 per cent). Farnworth trails Clark on this question as well, but the gap is sufficiently narrow (38 per cent for Clark to Farnworth’s 32 per cent) to suggest it would be a competitive contest between the two. Farnworth leads among general voters, NDP voters and even B.C. Liberal voters on every question. That’s why a number of B.C. Liberals have told reporters they are most worried about a potential victory by him on April 17, and why they are rubbing their hands with relish at the prospect of a Dix win. Of course, all polls are simply snapshots of public opinion. That opinion can swiftly change. Farnworth’s personal popularity, for example, could sour with people once more scrutiny is paid to his leadership and his party’s positions. The NDP leadership race has received scant media attention, which means no bad publicity has come their way. And a Dix victory may indeed fire up the party faithful and motivate more voters on the left to come out and vote in numbers not seen previously. Finally, one must consider the move of long-time federal Conservative MP John Cummins to
provincial politics. If he breathes life into the moribund B.C. Conservative party, he may take enough votes away from the B.C. Liberals to allow the NDP to win enough seats to form government even if its popular vote shrinks. A similar outcome occurred in the 1996 election, when Glen Clark won power with fewer votes than the B.C. Liberals because the B.C. Reform party took almost 10 per cent of the votes. And who was a key member of Clark’s strategy team? Why, Adrian Dix of course. Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global BC Keith.Baldrey@globalnews.ca

is a class warfare advocate, who unabashedly wants to push the party left because he feels that would motivate its core to get out and vote. Dix correctly notes more than a million voters simply don’t vote. Although I don’t think a majority of them necessarily adhere to socialist values, presumably a number of them are indeed disaffected NDP voters who may find Dix’s candidacy attractive. But the Ipsos-Reid poll seems to suggest otherwise. On the questions of who would be most likely to motivate people to vote for the NDP, Farnworth comes out on top by a wide margin (25 per cent versus just eight per cent for Dix and four per cent for John Horgan.). Dix, on the other hand, is the distinct choice among voters when asked who would be the least likely candidate to get people to vote for his party (19 per cent versus just nine per cent for Farnworth). Perhaps most telling, however, is how the candidates fare in a head-to-head matchup with Clark on the question of who would make the best premier. Clark has a wide lead over both Dix (44 per cent to 25 per cent for Dix) and Horgan (41 per cent ver-

Hiebert did all he could do The Editor, Re: “MP Hiebert ‘did nothing’ to help Afghan vet,” the Now, April 1. This story cuts to your heart – especially if you have a relative, let alone a son/daughter, serving in the military. To make this story even more tragic is the circumstance and the consequence of that action. I believe MP Russ Hiebert would want to do everything in his power to help Dan Scott. There was a great deal of action on this issue by soldiers who were caught in Dan Scott’s predicament and I know Hiebert will have done – and still will do – all he can to
change the legislation to be more supportive of these soldiers. If there is a majority Conservative government and the military is one of its top priorities, there will be changes made to better protect our loved ones in their time of need.

MP’s income bill great idea The Editor, I recently read with keen interest the private member’s bill put forth by Conservative MP Russ Hiebert proposing income splitting between spouses for families with children under 18. As a financial advisor for 27 years, this makes sense to me as an extension of the already established income splitting for pension income earners. The core of this initiative is to recognize the work that both parents deliver in raising a family. I recall many years ago when Prince Charles asked a lady in the crowd whether or not she worked outside the home. He was particularly sensitive to the fact that where one parent works for a salary perhaps the other parent works equally hard for the development of their children. It is fair to say that they both work. The benefit to society is
enhanced when time for family building is acknowledged as work, although unpaid. This proposed bill would recognize the contribution of both spouses as work by allowing the higher income spouses income to be shared within the nuclear family. I applaud this proposed bill that finally recognizes and provides a financial benefit to parents who work and raise a family in Canada.

Cadman has no credibility The Editor, I think MP Dona Cadman should run for cover any time the issue of taxes comes up. In a sneaky, underhanded backroom deal, her Conservative government brought us the HST. I guess when she mailed out her junk mail advertising on taxes, she forgot her Conservatives imposed the biggest tax grab in B.C. history. Cadman has no credibility when it comes to taxes or the HST. Wasn’t it Cadman who told reporters she would vote against the HST and then she didn’t even show up in the house? Now she’s trying to buy our votes with our money by saying she’s saving us money.

Trees had to go – live with it The Editor, Re: “A heritage heartbreak,” the Now, March 29. What did you intend to achieve by publishing this sob story? The road is needed, so the trees went. Reminds me of the same media hype generated during the Sea to Sky highway “cut versus tunnel” issue. Recall that some persons now have criminal records, as a result of civil disobedience. To what end? I have never seen, nor would I recognize, either a Southern red-backed vole or a Pacific water shrew. Were any successfully relocated prior to habitat disturbance, by the “concerned biologist?” Did he try? Thankfully, the eco-freaks had little say during the early clear-cut development days of Vancouver. I learned at an early age that “eggs must be broken, to make an omelette.” Give it a rest.

The Editor, Re: “MP Hiebert ‘did nothing’ to help Afghan vet,” the Now, April 1. Your front-page headline used scare quotes but was directly contradicted by the accompanying news story which indicated that Russ Hiebert did, in fact, do everything in his power to assist the wounded vet. This seems like a clear case of shoddy journalism to me, and it was egregious enough to motivate me to make a contribution to Russ Hiebert’s campaign tonight.

Many people assume that the most used spice is salt. However, salt is actually a mineral, not a spice. This leaves its sidekick, pepper, in the lead for the number-one position. Chef Peppercorns, as we know DEZ them, are the dried result of the piper nigrum berry and have been harvested for thousands of years. In ancient times, the value of this pungent spice was even elevated to the degree of being used as trading barter, much like currency. The four most popular types of peppercorns that dominate our current food markets are black, white, green and pink. Black peppercorns are obviously the most prevalent and also the least expensive. They are produced by harvesting the berries before they are fully ripe and drying them. The drying process is what gives them their black, hard wrinkled appearance and texture. These are not only the most popular but also the most pungent of the varieties. The best flavour and aroma is obtained by freshly grinding them directly on, or in, the dish being prepared. Pre-ground spices always lose their freshness and ability to season as time passes. Logically, fresher is always better. White peppercorns are derived from the same type of berries from which black peppercorns come, however, they are allowed to mature before harvesting. They are then either soaked or washed in water to remove the outer shell, which produces a white peppercorn with a milder taste. They are frequently utilized to season white sauces to ensure that the appearance of the sauce is not marred with black specs. Green peppercorns are one of my ultimate favourites in sauces. These peppercorns are harvested when still very immature, and either dried or preserved in brine. They offer a more natural temperate flavour; when brined, they are very soft and can be eaten whole. These are great for transforming ordinary gravy into a gourmet peppercorn sauce with the help of a jigger of brandy or wine. The dried green peppercorns can be rehydrated to make them pliable to accomplish this same task. They can also be mashed into a paste for different applications. Pink peppercorns are not actually peppercorns in the same definition as above-mentioned examples. They are berries that look

similar to the piper nigrum berry but are sweeter, milder and more aromatic. They can ripen to even a dark red in colour before harvesting. These are great in delicately flavoured recipes and offer great presentation as well. In light of all the choices you have, it should be apparent that pepper is nothing to sneeze at. Dear Chef Dez, A sales clerk at a department store told me that I should buy a hand-held pepper mill instead of using a shaker. She said that pepper freshly ground from a pepper mill is better than pepper purchased already ground. I guess this does make sense — is this true? If so, should I buy one of those salt mills too? Dear Gladys, This is true. Grinding pepper fresh from a mill releases the essential oils and aromatics trapped inside whole peppercorns, and the taste difference is incredible. Like other spices, once pepper is ground it is only a matter of time before it becomes stale. Salt mills, on the other hand, are more for aesthetic appeal. Salt minerals do not have essential oils and, thus, grinding them fresh will make no difference in taste. The only thing you will gain from using a salt grinder is the unique texture of the irregular shaped crystals falling on your food. Send your food/cooking questions to dez@ chefdez.com.

❚ LIVING ❚YOUR HEALTH
Water has vital role Everyone should have Patricia CHUEY the opportunity to view For Postmedia News the earth from space. Seeing the dominant blue colour of our globe might be a powerful reminder of the importance of water to the planet and to our health. Our body, like the earth, is 60 to 70 per cent water. We float in water even before we’re born. Survival is possible for a few weeks without food, but for only a few days without water. About two litres of water is lost daily through breathing, sweating and kidney function. Water is part of every cell in our bodies. It aids digestion and metabolism, and the body’s ability to burn calories. It helps muscles move without cramping, supports vision, brain and kidney function, and maintains blood pressure and body temperature. Lack of water can increase fat deposits, bloating and constipation. Tingling hands and feet, light-headedness and nausea are other clues to a fluid shortfall. And there are psychological effects that can impact your weight loss program: low energy, headaches or grouchiness from dehydration aren’t going to motivate you to prepare healthy meals or go for a walk. Dieters sometimes do crazy things with water. Filling four or more one-litre water bottles and staring at them in the fridge first thing in the morning is intimidating. All-ornothing thinking never works for permanent weight loss. How much do you require? Some say 10 cups a day, others four to six.
When asked, my answer is simply: “More.” Most of us need more water than we currently drink. But like all things in nutrition, balance is critical. Don’t go overboard, but do get enough. Avoid relying on thirst alone. By the time thirst kicks in, dehydration has begun. A simple tactic for meeting hydration goals is to drink water every time you eat, which in total should equal four to six cups. If you prefer to drink water before or after the meal rather than with your food, go for it. When eating salty or sweet foods, drink extra water to prevent thirst later. Other strategies: ❚ Drink water upon waking. Sleep is very dehydrating. ❚ When feeling ravenous, drink water first. This can take the edge off and buy time in choosing a healthier food option instead of the first thing in sight. ❚ Keep a water bottle handy at home, at work and in the car. ❚ Although liquid, don’t count alcohol in the daily total. It causes water loss, and all those calories will work against your goal to lose weight. ❚ Drink water as much in the winter as in the summer. Except during extreme exercise in hot weather, the body’s requirements for water remain the same year-round. ❚ During exercise, drink water every 15 to 20 minutes. Registered dietitian Patricia Chuey can be reached through www.patriciachuey.com.

WELSH RABBITS: Unusual places in North Wales
Wales, unlike MargaretDEEFHOLTS England, its rather Now Contributor staid neighbour, is a land of whimsy. It is early spring in Llangollen, North Wales and hedgerows like dark eyebrows run along the edges of fields where mother sheep fuss over their newly arrived lambs. Our mini-bus drops our group off at Plas Newydd, a Tudor style house, with a façade resembling rows of black and white dominoes. This was once the home of Lady Eleanor Butler and the Honourable Sarah Ponsonby — both born to minor nobility in Ireland — who, in order to avoid being forced into marriage, eloped to Wales and set up house here in 1780. Today this would hardly raise an eyebrow… but back then, what would the strait-laced society of the late 18th century have made of the “Ladies of Llangollen” as they came to be called? There is no hard evidence to prove that they were lovers but a display of memorabilia at Plas Newydd speaks for itself — sketches of them dressed alike in men’s waistcoats, skirts and top hats, and lavishly affectionate notes addressing one another as “my sweet love” or “my beloved.” Their dog was called Sappho, and in all the years they were together, they refused to spend a single night apart. Notwithstanding this, their genteel lifestyle gave them the appearance of two maiden aunts, quietly engrossed in gardening, writing and the study of literature. Lady Eleanor was a prolific correspondent and diarist, and Plas Newydd became the haunt of literati such as Byron, Shelley and Wordsworth, whose “Sonnet Composed at Plas Newydd” was penned in their garden. There were other notables too among their
In Wales, the fascinating Plas Newydd is now a museum run by the ❚PHOTO/Margaret Deefholts Denbighshire County Council. visitors, including European royalty, the Duke of Wellington and Josiah Wedgwood. To supplement their slender income (their outraged families had refused to extend any financial help), at the Queen’s request, King George III granted them a pension. Plas Newydd has an intricate wood-carved entrance, and bas-relief panels decorate the walls along the interior stairway. Overall the rooms are small and rather dark, but in my imagination I see Miss Sarah as she tidies up the coverlet of their double bed, while Lady Eleanor writes in her journal by the window, exchanging perhaps a fond look and a smile with her dear companion. Their relationship spanned more than 50 years, until they passed away, Eleanor in 1829, Sarah two
years later. The Ladies rest side-byside in St. Collen’s Churchyard in Llangollen, and Plas Newydd is now a museum run by the Denbighshire County Council. In contrast to this tranquil country estate, is a wacky, but undeniably popular resort (a rarebit of Welsh drollery?) in Snowdonia on the northwest coast of Wales. Portmeirion is the brain-child of a self-styled architect, Sir Clough Williams-Ellis who, undaunted by his failure to complete a degree in architecture, went on to create a fantastical world of buildings, statues and gardens. Dubbed by visitors as “zany” and “campy,” one wonders whether Sir Clough was either a dotty eccentric, or had a prankish sense of humour. Or perhaps both.

Dali-esque world of buildings in wild hues continued from page 20 Robin Llywelyn, Clough’s grandson and managing director of Portmeirion, leads our group through a cobalt blue painted archway and talks with great solemnity about the history of Portmeirion, but most of us aren’t listening. We are peering at our surroundings: a Dali-esque world of buildings in the wildest of hues — turquoise, burnt umber, purple, pink, mauve, terra-cotta, ink-blue and bright yellow. The structures run the gamut of architectural styles from Jacobean to Art Deco. An Italian piazza lies below us, and on a hill to one side, a stone bell tower that looks as though it once featured in the movie Vertigo. For the next half hour, we walk through the village, bemused. Portmeirion is the nearest thing I can imagine to a funky collection of DeMille-style Hollywood sets. Here an Athenian portico with pillared colonnades, there a mullioned-windowed Stratford-on-Avon cottage and, just across the way, a Spanish hacienda with a terracotta tile roof. In between, just for variety, are Ionic columns topped by bronze Burmese dancers, marble angels and a stone Hercules hefting the globe. The group gathers for tea at what is
probably the only elegant building on the property — the hotel, with its airy tea room and tastefully appointed restaurant. Discovering Welsh rare bits doesn’t just apply to places; it’s about their unique signage, too. In the village of Llangollen, I stop short before a sign that looks like a spill of Scrabble tiles: “Ysiopfachgardiauw rthybontdrosyrafonddyfrdwyynllangollen”. It means, “The little shop that sells cards by the bridge that crosses the river Dee in Llangollen.” Margaret Deefholts contributes to Surrey-based Travel Writers’ Tales, an independent newspaper syndicate that offers professionally written travel articles to newspaper editors and publishers. Surrey Knights swim club members gave their teammate some added vocal encouragement as he approached them during a freestyle competition Saturday morning. ❚FRASER VALLEY SOCCER LEAGUE
Peace Arch defends Pakenham crown their game with long balls and that gave them opportunities. In the first half we got back to what we usually do with possession football and the game seemed to open up a bit with more opportunities for us.” The game got off to a disastrous beginning for upstart North Delta as Peace Arch’s Jamie Williams created a turnover in the first minute of play and then dished the ball off to Ryan Horvath for a quick 1-0 lead. It was not the start the visitors wanted, nor what goalkeeper Shane Yarwood needed. Yarwood was playing his first premier league game in two years as yet another emergency replacement between the North Delta posts. North Delta suffered a massive loss early in the season when keeper Jon Frampton
passed away after a short battle with cancer. Since then the North Delta goal has featured a revolving door with steady stream of temporary fixes. Yarwood was the fifth goalkeeper to play with the team since September.
DAVE HLEUCKA/ “We had a few chances but we started playing their game with long balls and that gave them opportunities.” Undaunted by the ignominious start, North Delta battled back and managed to level the count in the 30th minute when Steve Otten scored on a goalmouth scramble. Just when it appeared the two sides would head into the break
tied 1-1, Peace Arch struck again late in the first half when Taki Vohalis scored off an indirect free kick. “That goal was a giant weight off our shoulders,” Hleucka said. “We really started to believe at that point that we could score at will and it was right before halftime, which was huge. We were right in their kitchen then and it forced them to adjust to us and play a little looser. It was a big goal in that it put us ahead but it also took the pressure off us and they had to open up more.” When play resumed, North Delta pressed hard for the equalizer and were almost rewarded when Lucas Johns broke free and cut toward the Peace Arch goal

It’s two troMichael BOOTH phies down and Sports Editor one to go for Peace Arch United. The Fraser Valley Soccer League premier champions added the loop’s Pakenham Cup to their resumé with a 4-1 win over North Delta SC at South Surrey Athletic Park Saturday afternoon. After a seesaw opening half, the defending Pakenham Cup champs wrested control of the contest in the final 45 minutes with two unanswered goals that turned a close game into a rout. “It was close for much of the game until partway through the second half,” said Peace Arch playing coach Dave Hleucka. “They kept us on our back foot for the first 25-30 minutes. We had a few chances but we started playing

❚ SPORTS ❚RUGBY
The youthful Sharks held their own early and were tied at 3-3 after 15 minutes. And then the dam burst as UVic pounded in four tries and booted a drop goal to build a commanding 30-3 halftime lead. The second half brought more of the same as the Vikings rang up four more tries before Bayside finally touched one down behind the goal line to cut the gap to 54-10. UVic immediately scored on their next possession to run the count to 59-10 before Bayside closed out the scoring with a late unconverted try. Peter Clifford scored one try, kicked a penalty and provided a successful convert to a total of 10 points in a losing cause. “We expected to give them a better game than that,” Benoit said. “Momentum is a funny thing and when you get off to a bad start, it sometimes snowballs on you and just gets worse. Truthfully though, with seven nationally-carded players, they’re very good and if they didn’t beat us with that lineup, I would really wonder about them.” The Sharks will try to put the bad
memories from their ill-fated Island cruise behind them when they take on the UBC Old Boys Ravens in Vancouver next Saturday (April 9). Benoit said most of the veterans will be back for a contest that could make or break the Sharks’ playoff hopes. “We had a bad weekend and now we have to move on,” Benoit said. “We have to put this behind us and look at the big picture, which is if we can win this week against the Ravens, we’re in the playoffs. The Ravens are a good team with a couple of national team players but we’ll be ready for them.” In other action, the Bayside first division side fell 36-12 to their UVic counterparts prior to the premier match. The third division Sharks turned in an outstanding performance in a 1717 tie with Kats. Bayside started the game with just 12 players but insisted on playing shorthanded to avoid being saddled with a default loss. Despite the manpower disadvantage, the Sharks scored a try in the final minute of play to steal a tie and two points in the standings.
❚FRASER VALLEY SOCCER LEAGUE
Peace Arch eyes run at Provincial Cup continued from page 25 only to be foiled by United goalkeeper Brian Brum. “We played really good soccer for the most part,” said a disappointed North Delta SC president John Gaull. “We gave up a really bad goal to start with but we recovered. We came back and got back into it and then gave up another bad goal at the end of the first half. When that happened we had to press forward and we almost tied it again in the second half.
If we had scored, then it would have been 2-2 and it’s a new game. Instead we had to move everybody forward and that left them with too much room.” The tide slowly turned after that as Peace Arch forwards were able to repeatedly slip behind the North Delta defence to create scoring chances. Yarwood made a couple of timely saves but United finally bagged the insurance marker when a low shot by Cory Gibson slipped through the North
Delta keeper’s hands. Peace Arch then put the game out of reach when Steve Dormer and Jason Dunnett broke in alone. It was a no-win situation for Yarwood as Dormer chipped the ball into the net for the final goal of the afternoon. With the premier and Pakenham Cup titles safely locked away in the team’s trophy cabinet, Peace Arch can now turn their attention to the upcoming Provincial Cup tourney. The annual soccer showcase features the top men’s premier teams from the Fraser Valley, Vancouver Metro and Vancouver
Island leagues competing for the provincial club championship and the right to represent B.C. at the national championships in October. Peace Arch has won the FVSL premier title and the Pakenham Cup several times but the Provincial Cup has never called South Surrey Athletic Park home. “It’s a big thing for a Fraser Valley team to compete in the Provincial Cup,” Hleucka said. “It’s the best teams from the three leagues and it’s not an easy thing to win. We’ve been consistent all year and we’re looking forward to it.”

I am one of those last-minute guys. Except for scheduled events and trips I am pretty well a make-it-up guy as the week goes along. Except this week. I am going to be firmly established in my Lazy Boy— portable computer and replay clicker at hand to watch the 2011 Masters. I can’t think of one died-in-the-wool golf fan who doesn’t have his favourite Masters year or moment. For many of us Canucks it was Mike Weir’s win in 2003. The victory turned a nation of hockey fans into golf fans. For me it was 25 years ago when Jack Nicklaus at 46, an age when you’re not supposed to win this event, scored a victory for the ages. As many writers pointed out this week it was by far one of the most gripping and thrilling events ever seen on sports television. That was reality TV at its finest. Jack, now 71, is still stunned at the reaction of the fans: “I don’t care where I go, I always run into somebody who says I had to do this or I had to do that or I had to this or I had to stop that,” Nicklaus said. “Amazing.” Lets re-live a bit of that final Sunday. Jack was not the leader going into the final day; in fact he was in ninth place, four strokes off the pace. A cast of future hall-of-famers was ahead of him: Price, Watson, Kite, Ballesteros, Langer and more. According to Kite, Nicklaus was not even a factor on the front nine “and then he lit it up.” He birdied 9, 10 and 11 and 13—remember, the leaders were behind Jack and by the noise they knew something was happening ahead. Then on 15, needing an eagle to have any chance, he rolled in that that brilliant 12-foot putt—then he was in the mix. CBS’s Ben Wright with the call: “Yes sir! The battle is joined. My goodness. There is life in the old Bear yet.” More birdies followed on 16 and 17, a routine par on 18, and then the wait. When Norman missed his par on 18 it was all over. At the age of 46 the Bear had beaten down the best. We all talk about how Tiger Woods won several tournaments because the others collapsed under relentless pressure. Maybe that’s what happened that day—roar upon roar, the crowd vacating the leaders to follow Jack. Maybe all that was too much for some of the greatest golfers in the world. So now we’re ready for another Masters this week. The kids, those under 29, have been the big winners this year. However, Michelson’s win on Sunday may be a turning point for the veteran. And how about Tiger? I’ve said repeatedly here that I have to see several good rounds back to back before I jump back on the bandwagon. He’s been improving; we’ll see. Ahh, the drama of TV sports.

Shorthanded Sharks no match for University of Victoria Vikings
The University Michael BOOTH of Victoria Vikings Sports Editor dined on fresh seafood Saturday as they chewed up the Bayside Sharks 59-15 in Canadian Direct Insurance premier rugby action on Vancouver Island. The Sharks hopped the ferry without the services of seven starters — almost half the starting lineup — who were absent due to injuries or work commitments. Without the veterans, Bayside was forced to field a young team that showed its inexperience against a Vikings side loaded with international-calibre talent. “For sure that was a factor Saturday,” said Bayside coach David Benoit. “We were playing UVic, who has seven national team players who train every day and are paid by Sport Canada, so they’re basically professional athletes. In order to compete against them, we’d have to have all our guys and be fit and healthy. “No excuses, we could have played better. We didn’t play as well as we could have but to go over there and get a result, we would have had to have all of our horses.”

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Fiat 500 is fun to drive, cleverly designed, and fuel efficient with an upbeat attitude, a lot of character — and it’s priced to compete. The North American edition is made at a Chrysler plant in Mexico, and they should start arriving at local dealers anytime now, but expect about a sixto eight-week delay between order and delivery.

button again. Fiat claims the 500 has more rear seat leg room and cargo room than the Mini Cooper, but the rear seat is not a place we would probably want to spend a lot of time in, and the cargo space is not huge. Mind you, with the rear seatbacks folded down, you could pack a lot of gear into the space that opens up. Overall, the new

that extends from the centre stack of the dash. A button on the dash engages a Sport mode that not only changes the shift pattern of the transmission, is also changes the weighting on the steering and the gas pedal action. Our only complaint was that when you move the shift lever to manual it reverts to normal mode, and you have to press the sport

Get ready to live the dolce vita, Canada — the Fiat 500, also known as the “Cinquecento,” will be on streets here soon. There’s been a lot of talk and speculation about this little car, and now we’ll see how it does in North America. The Italian mini car is the current Car of the Year in Europe, and early indicators of interest from buyers in Canada appear to be very positive. The official website (www. fiatcanada.com) got 60,000 hand-raisers interesting in buying the new 500 and a pre-sale of the first 500 (of the Fiat 500) sold out in just 12 hours. The Italian auto giant will sell its urban runabout through selected Chrysler dealerships, all of whom are making a significant investment in buildings, etc. Fiat currently holds a 25-per-cent stake in Chrysler and effectively runs the corporation. The Fiat 500 has city-friendly proportions and is at its best when asked to negotiate a tight parking spot or weave through congested city traffic. It comes in three models, and buyers have a choice of 14 exterior colours and 11 interior combinations. The 500 is powered by a new 1.4litre engine with a “MultiAir” technology invented by Fiat. The intake side of its four-valve combustion chamber arrangement can control both duration and lift of valve operation, in addition to timing. Another difference is that it’s achieved via high-pressure hydraulic activation using the engine oil. The result is more power and better fuel economy. Fiat claims the 500 can drive 780 kilometres on a full tank of gas, and it can hold 40 litres of fuel. The Cinquecento was last sold in Canada 27 years ago. The design of the new
to provide a softer surface for occupants in an impact and not to interfere with the array of hidden safety features of the car. The 500 comes standard with seven airbags and an occupant-protection structural cage that got a top rating in the European crash tests. It also comes standard with a full complement of active safety features including electronic stability control. The seventh airbag, one more than usual, is a driver knee airbag. The driver’s seat is height adjustable via a manual cranking system, but even in its lowest position it’s still taller than most cars. I had no problem with head or leg room, despite my aboveaverage build, and the interior feels surprisingly roomy considering its diminutive external dimensions. The overall powerto-weight ratio of the 500 is roughly the same as the Mini Cooper, so even though the power output from its engine (101-hp) is less, it moves along in a sprightly manner. We drove both the five-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmission versions. Both are good, but we were particularly impressed by the automatic. The auto shift lever is perfectly positioned close the steering wheel, on a shelf

car pays homage to that same little car, which was introduced to Italians all the way back in 1957. The new Fiat 500 is a blend of emotional heritage, a high level of standard features and rational appeal that have been combined with modern Italian style, technical brilliance and an affordable price. The base price of $15,995 for the Pop edition, is about $4,000 below the Mini Cooper, the car that Fiat people see as its primary competitor in the Canadian market. Sport ($18,500) and Lounge ($19,500) are the two highertrim level editions of the 500. Both come with unique body and interior features. Both a performance and a cabriolet (convertible) version of the 500 are also expected later in this year. The variety of paint colours available, which come in metallic, non-metallic and premium tri-coat pearl finishes, is very impressive. Add in the 11 interior choices and buyers have an opportunity to build, through the ordering process, a distinctive car to match their personal taste. The exterior colour choice is also the colour of the dash panel. In the original 500 this was a metal panel, but in the new 500 it’s a plastic panel that’s designed
