FITNESS + MOVEMENT Daily physical activity is essential if you hope to “live younger longer.” Canyon Ranch® makes it easy and natural for you to be active throughout your stay, and we’ll help you incorporate enjoyable new movement strategies into a wellness lifestyle at home. A program of regular exercise can prevent, improve and, in some cases, cure chronic illness, as well as boost immune system function. You’ll experience renewed energy, greater vitality and improved mood – an overall enhanced quality of life.

WHAT IS YOUR SKILL LEVEL? BEGINNER: All Levels, Level I, Level I/II Cardio – New or returning to a cardiovascular program/occasional walking, 15-‐20 minutes. Low to moderate intensity. Strength – New or returning to a strength program/no formal or specific weight-‐training program. Flexibility – New or returning to a flexibility program. Yoga – New or returning to a yoga practice. INTERMEDIATE: Level II, Level II/III Cardio – Current program consisting of 30 to 40 minutes of cardiovascular work three or four times a week. Moderate intensity. Strength – Current program including pushups, squats, lunges. Flexibility – Currently stretching on a regular basis at the beginning or end of a workout. Yoga – At least 6 months of practicing once a week, comfortable doing a Sun Salutation. ADVANCED: No limitations, Level II/III, Level III Cardio – Current program consisting of 40+ minutes of cardiovascular work four or more times a week. Moderate to high intensity. Strength – Current free-‐weight program consisting of multiplane movements on unstable surfaces. Flexibility – Currently stretching on a regular basis at the beginning or end of a workout. Yoga – Daily practice for several years that includes advanced poses.

Personal Fitness Training GOOD POSTURE FOR LIFE Good posture is an expression of self-‐confidence and grace, and can help you avoid chronic pain later in life. In this session, your posture and gait are assessed and you’ll receive customized instruction for movements to practice at home. 50 minutes. PERSONAL TRAINING Benefit from a private session with a Canyon Ranch fitness instructor. Choose from the many classes offered in This Week at Canyon Ranch. Available as an individual, duet or group private session. 50 minutes. KINESIS Rediscover harmony between mind and body with the Kinesis® movement system. Specially designed cables, grips and weight stacks ensure that your movements are easy, natural and unrestricted. Kinesis is great for muscular strength and endurance and improves balance, stability and flexibility. 50 minutes. TRX TRX Suspension Training® allows you to work out using your body weight. You’ll focus on developing strength, endurance, balance and flexibility. 25 minutes. Mind-‐Body Private Training PILATES This mental and physical conditioning system can benefit anyone from professional athletes to those with chronic pain issues. Pilates uses specially designed equipment to strengthen and stretch the whole physique, building core strength, increasing flexibility and much more. Individual, duet and small group (3 to 5 guests) private sessions. Also available as group clinics at various levels. All levels. 50 minutes. YOGA A skilled yoga teacher corrects or enhances your poses, provides tips on alignment, breathing and intention. A great way to refine your practice whether you’re a beginner, intermediate or advanced practitioner. 50 or 110 minutes.

EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY Canyon Ranch exercise professionals are among the best in the world, and they can be invaluable in helping you establish or build upon a customized exercise routine – whatever your current fitness level. Our highly trained exercise physiologists are knowledgeable in the science of exercise and can assess your preferences, health history, goals and needs – then design a program just for you to take home. Physiological Assessments BODY COMPOSITION ANALYSIS BOD POD® is the gold standard tracking system used to determine body composition (fat and fat-‐free mass). A full test requires only about five minutes, and provides highly accurate, safe, comfortable and fast results. An exercise physiologist will review and explain the results of your test. 25 minutes. COMPREHENSIVE EXERCISE ASSESSMENT Get the type of evaluation and advice that professional athletes enjoy. Part I – Begin with an extensive assessment of your fitness. Tests include a Body Composition Analysis, flexibility testing, upper-‐ and lower-‐body strength assessment, and a submaximal treadmill test to estimate aerobic capacity and determine your optimal target heart rate training zone. 50 minutes. Part II – An exercise physiologist reviews your test results with you and compares them to norms for your age. Together, you’ll develop an exercise prescription for improving your fitness in areas important to you. 50 minutes. Follow-‐Up – Recommended if you have completed the Comprehensive Exercise Assessment previously and want to track fitness changes and update your exercise program. 80 minutes. DISCOVER YOUR FITNESS AGE How old you are and how old you feel may be two different things. Your physiological age is an indication of how well your body is holding up with the passage of time. By learning your fitness age in each of five areas, you’ll discover which areas stand to benefit most from your attention. Part I – An exercise physiologist will administer the following tests: • • • •
Body composition to assess fat and lean muscle mass Submaximal exercise test to determine aerobic capacity and VO2 maximum Muscle strength and power testing, including upper and lower body Evaluation of balance

Part II – An exercise physiologist reviews your test results and what they reveal about your fitness age. An exercise prescription for improvement will be provided. 50 minutes. Follow-‐Up – Recommended if you have completed Discover Your Fitness Age previously and want to track fitness changes and update your exercise program. 80 minutes. METABOLIC EXERCISE ASSESSMENT Discover your aerobic fitness level (VO2 max) with a machine used by NASA to assess astronauts, and learn how many calories you really burn when you work out. This service is recommended for people who want to change body composition, learn the most effective way to burn body fat, determine aerobic threshold, increase stamina and fitness or improve sports performance. Part I – An exercise physiologist administers a submaximal exercise test while you exercise on your choice of cardiovascular exercise equipment: elliptical trainer, rowing machine, stationary bike or treadmill. Note: This test cannot be performed in a pool. 50 minutes. Part II – After analyzing the data, your exercise physiologist will explain your results and design an exercise program to maximize your workout and enhance your training program. 50 minutes. Body Therapy LOOK AFTER YOUR FEET This session includes a comprehensive assessment for common foot problems such as plantar fasciitis, bunion, shin splints and foot pain. After checking your joint and muscle function, an exercise physiologist may use different treatment methods, including manual muscle therapy, isometric training and various therapy devices. You’ll receive advice on proper shoe selection, and tools and resources to help you take care of your feet. Please dress for exercise. 50 minutes. MUSCULOSKELETAL ISSUES This is a truly comprehensive assessment and treatment session that looks at the body as a whole. You’ll receive a detailed assessment, and an exercise physiologist will use state-‐of-‐the-‐art therapy equipment to treat the following common issues: • • • • •

LOW LEVEL LASER THERAPY Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is a laser or LED light therapy that improves the healing of tissue (skin, muscle, tendon, bone and nerves), reduces inflammation and relieves pain. It works by stimulating and encouraging cellular function and is used to treat pain from arthritis, tendonitis and other conditions. Please dress comfortably. 25 minutes. NEUROMUSCULAR ASSESSMENT Neuromuscular Assessment (NA) is a systematic approach that evaluates the body, identifies weak or inhibited muscles, then treats muscular imbalances that contribute to pain, injury, or lack of performance. NA addresses the underlying cause of a problem, rather than just treating its symptoms. In this three-‐step service, a specialist will help restore your body’s natural alignment and movement. Follow-‐up sessions may be recommended, depending on your needs. Step I – Range of Motion Test. An exercise physiologist will identify restrictions in movement to help locate muscles that may be inhibited or weakened. Step II – Muscle Test. The muscle testing process is what really sets NA apart from other types of therapy. Pain in one part of your body can result from a problem in an entirely different area. The exercise physiologist tests your muscle response, focusing on the origin of your problem. Step III – Treatment. Your exercise physiologist uses a precise palpation technique with fingertips to activate the weakened muscle. Please dress for exercise. 50 minutes. Follow-‐Up – Recommended if you have completed the Neuromuscular Assessment previously and want to track fitness changes and update your exercise program. 50 minutes. Workout ATHLETIC CONDITIONING IN THE WATER Conditioning in the water offers unique benefits for all fitness levels. Cardiovascular health, muscular strength, power and endurance can be safely improved through activities like water walking and running, aquatic jump-‐training, tethering, resistance training and deep-‐water work. An exercise physiologist will show you how to train for a specific sport or increase your overall fitness level – while decreasing your risk of injury. 50 minutes.

PERSONALIZED TRAINING FOR SPECIAL NEEDS If you have a condition that limits you, this session can help you safely become more active. Common concerns include diabetes, recovery from stroke, arthritis, circulation problems, neuromuscular disease, recovery from surgery, joint replacement, and balance and agility issues. Other possible topics include pre-‐ or postnatal exercise, exercise for women at various stages of life and exercise for travel. 50 minutes. Program Design EXERCISE FOR BONE HEALTH If you want to prevent bone loss (osteopenia or osteoporosis), appropriate exercise can help. An exercise physiologist recommends safe, effective exercises based on the results of your bone density or body composition evaluation, or on your risk factors. You’ll receive a personal exercise prescription including cardiovascular exercise, resistance training and balance/agility work. 50 minutes. EXERCISE FOR WEIGHT LOSS & BODY DEFINITION Fat reduction and muscle definition are achievable goals. Meet with an exercise physiologist to design a customized exercise program that will optimize your exercise time, maximize metabolism, increase lean body mass, enhance muscle and promote weight loss. 50 minutes. EXERCISE FOR YOUTHFUL AGING People lose 250 grams of muscle tissue every year after age 30. Eventually, this results in limitations in movement we think of as “old age.” This regression in strength, flexibility, balance and agility is not only preventable but reversible with only 45 minutes of physical activity three times a week, done in the right way. Join an exercise physiologist to find out where you are in the process – and how to improve. 50 minutes. SPORTS PERFORMANCE This is the perfect service if you are training for a competition or event. An exercise physiologist will assess your training program, take you through appropriate exercises and give you precise, written instructions to take with you. You will learn how to prepare most efficiently during the weeks leading up to, the morning of and during the event, and how best to recover physically afterwards. Sessions include: • • • • • •

If you are suffering from a sports-‐related injury or chronic pain, the doctor will approach the problem from Western and Eastern medical perspectives to hasten your recovery, and plan your care with the help of our exercise physiologists and physiotherapists. 50 minutes. Physiotherapy LYMPHEDEMA TREATMENT A physiotherapist will apply effective methods of treatment based on your particular needs including physiotherapy, massage, compression and recommendations for self-‐ care at home. The goal is to help restore function, reduce physical and psychological discomfort, and prevent the development of infection. 50 minutes. SPINAL CARE PROGRAM Following an assessment by a physiotherapist, you’ll receive a personalized rehabilitation program to address chronic neck and back pain, as well as any musculoskeletal limitations. 50 minutes. NO SWEAT EXERCISE PLAN A physiotherapist will design an exercise plan to accommodate your specific needs. You’ll learn how to perform effective exercises without overexertion. This service may be helpful if you have certain chronic conditions, are in treatment for cancer, or are recovering from surgery. 50 minutes. PHYSIOTHERAPY Physiotherapy can help restore movement and function when you are affected by injury, illness or disability – by using physical intervention such as manual therapy techniques or massage. MANUAL THERAPY A physiotherapist will address your issues with musculoskeletal pain and/or limited mobility through hands-‐on techniques including manipulation, mobilization and massage. KINESIO TAPING Developed by a physiotherapist, the Kinesio Taping Method is designed to prolong the

effects of physiotherapy by changing muscle tone, moving lymphatic fluids, correcting movement patterns and improving posture. DRY NEEDLING A physiotherapist may use this technique to release or inactivate trigger points by inserting a “dry” needle (one without medication or injection) through the skin into areas of the muscle. The goal is to relieve pain or improve range of motion. Unlike the traditional Chinese practice of acupuncture, dry needling is part of modern Western medicine. PHYSIO PILATES With guidance from your physiotherapist, Pilates can be effective in restoring function following an illness or injury.
