transformation? We often talk about transformation at Canyon Ranch, and I'm aware this can sound scary to some people – as if we’re suggesting there’s something wrong that needs to change right now. That’s not it at all. In fact, I'm talking about transformation in the most positive way – an aspect of growth and evolution that carries us to greater fulfillment. I see it as a flowering or an unfolding, reaching a new level of personal empowerment. I’ve seen this in countless guests, and I know about it personally. My life was transformed when I went to Ojai spa in 1978, hoping to lose some weight. I found myself in exactly the right place at the right time. I was reenergized by healthy living and my newfound love of exercise, and I felt better than I ever knew I could. That’s when the transformation happened – I moved from that daily state of “I feel fine (or not) today” to a critical change within: “I feel great. Period.”

Mel Zuckerman | Co-founder

That transformation was so powerful that I came back to Tucson and, at age 50, gave up a successful career so Enid and I could create a place devoted to healthy living. The goal was to live in that environment the rest of our lives and to help other people discover healthy living. We’re thankful we've been able to do that. I have adapted to the aging process, too, accepting that it’s normal that I can’t do everything I once could – but I can still give everything I do my 100% effort. Many Canyon Ranch guests can, in their own ways, relate to the transformation I experienced. Sure, it’s easy to feel good when you’re at the Ranch, but the ultimate transformation occurs when you take that feeling home – along with the wisdom, tools and commitment to achieve your goals. People tell me every week how Canyon Ranch saved their lives. That’s the positive power of transformation. In the end, it’s all very personal. The most honest relationship you’ll ever have is with yourself – no secrets there! – and only you know what you need and what you’re ready for. Be your own best friend in this. Have a quiet sit-down with yourself, and be honest about your intentions, what you want, and what you’re willing to do. When time, purpose and opportunity come together, you can turn understanding into action. Transformation is a beautiful thing!

To know and not to do is not yet to know. – BUDDHIST PROVERB

Remember those classic cartoon characters – like the Roadrunner, beep beep! – whose legs spun endlessly in a circle? Ellipticals, introduced in the 1990s, create a similar movement. Gym equipment has undergone a revolution since those days of simple, single-function machines. In real life, legs need to move in multiple planes, change direction and function optimally in daily situations, says Christina Lopez, fitness director at Canyon Ranch in Tucson. “When elliptical trainers hit the market, they quickly populated gyms and became the most popular cardio machines. The combination of offering a nonimpact upper and lower body exercise was an instant favorite to many; so much so that they’ve been going strong for around 20 years – but the time of the elliptical is coming to an end. Today’s workout equipment focuses on greater versatility, with natural human movement at front and center.”

TAKING A NEW DIRECTION “The plane of motion for everything from bicycles to rowing machines and ellipticals is straight forward,” says Christina, “but during daily activities, we don’t move in a straight line for long periods of time. Machines like the Techno Gym Cardio Wave allow the user to move laterally, as well as from front to back. “Instead of forcing the body to move in a predetermined path, more equipment is allowing for natural body paths, and offering more variety,” she says. “For example, with our AMT, or Adaptive Motion Trainer, you can climb, cycle, jog or run without ever changing machines. It’s everything an elliptical is, and more. You can use the elliptical motion, longer strides, or even a stair-stepping motion. Best of all, the motion can even be switched on the fly, which makes workouts more fun and less monotonous.” ●

MoveStrong:

FITNESS MEETS PLAYTIME

Wouldn’t it be great to recapture the simple joy of movement you felt as a child on the playground apparatus? It was perfect exercise, but it felt like play. For the nearest equivalent, check out MoveStrong® – the exciting workout equipment recently added at Canyon Ranch in Tucson, along with a similar structure in Lenox. With countless customizable stations, MoveStrong lets you work on strength, balance, agility, mobility and endurance, using your body weight to build strength and fitness that carries over to everyday activities. “Think of it as a jungle gym for adults. It puts the ‘fun’ back into functional fitness,” says Christina.

What’s this signature fragrance like? Close your eyes and imagine … a clean, invigorating scent with essential oils of lemon, cedar wood and bergamot, and with notes of lemongrass, sage and other aromatics. You’ll find out for yourself on your next Canyon Ranch visit: These products are the new featured amenities in resort guest rooms and spa locker rooms, and, beginning next month, they'll be available from our online store. The Canyon Ranch collection features ingredients chosen for exceptional skin and hair care benefits – specifically: Dilo oil – The sacred dilo tree, known as the “tree of a thousand virtues,” is indigenous to tropical Southeast Asia. Dilo oil is harvested from the fruit of the tree, after the kernel is dried for two months. Rich in essential natural lipids to help restore the skin’s firmness and elasticity, it is the key ingredient in our soothing moisturizer and revitalizing body wash.

Susan Docherty | CEO

Chia seed oil – Derived from a protein source once prized by the Aztecs, chia seed oil is a remarkable ingredient for hair care. It promotes a healthy scalp due to high levels of omega fatty acids, which possess soothing, anti-inflammatory properties as well as protective antioxidant benefits. It enhances shine and retains moisture for smoother, softer, healthier-looking hair. This collection of luxurious body care products reflects the nearly 40-year commitment of Canyon Ranch to provide transformative wellness experiences to help you live your fullest life – not just while you’re on vacation, but long after you return home. I can’t wait to hear your feedback on this new collection – just one of many exciting new Canyon Ranch ventures you’ll be hearing about in the coming months! Wishing you good health & happiness,

“I

Inge Solheim

t’s not the polar bear you see that’s dangerous – it’s the one you don’t see.” Celebrated polar explorer and international safety expert Inge Solheim’s guiding principle is to be fully prepared for every conceivable situation.

“I plan for things not to go wrong,” says Inge, who has led adventure-focused events at Canyon Ranch in Tucson and Lenox. “I learn about the environment, speak to local experts and make sure I have the right kit. If you have a positive, solution-oriented attitude, you can achieve anything.” As a child, Inge was inspired by his grandfather’s stories of famous polar explorers. Now he leads customized expeditions for people who dream of adventure. At Canyon Ranch, he’s spoken about how to set “big, hairy goals” and the inner dialogue necessary for achieving success. Born in a Norwegian village amid icy mountains and fjords, Inge has led expeditions to both poles, including a group of wounded servicemen and England’s Prince Harry. No one gets preferential treatment, and everyone is tested to the utmost – from climbing a frozen waterfall to digging a cave in a cliff of snow to sleep in. The Canyon Ranch mission to help people make positive life changes and achieve personal goals, both physical and mental, resonates powerfully with him. In his icebound arena of unforgiving terrain and extreme conditions, he’s dedicated to helping each group member to develop latent strengths, conquer weaknesses

or fears, and promote personal growth as they overcome barriers they may have thought impossible. While Inge takes people to the extremes, his basic approach compares with building an exercise regimen at the Ranch; it grows from your starting point, so you can pursue your own goals. That could mean great adventures in the wild or something closer to home. Inge’s off-the-charts type-A personality, and his uncanny ability to read each person at the deepest level, are fully focused on helping people discover their capabilities by testing their limits to the max. At the same time, he says, “I try to have a ‘servant leadership’ style. It’s their adventure. My job is to try to understand who they are, and make this work for them. It may turn out to be a lifechanging journey. “Training is key. It might take a month, or a year. I push hard, learn each person‘s risk tolerance and pain threshold, how they react when they’re tired, hungry; how they treat themselves and others around them. When I see an interest or a talent, I encourage that.” It’s vital to be consciously positive in your inner dialogue, he says, echoing the theme of one of his Canyon Ranch presentations. For example, “If you say you’re scared of heights, it becomes a mantra. I tell people, ‘Do what it takes to reach your goal.’” Polar exploration sounds like the ultimate dangerous occupation, but Inge says, “I take less risk than most people do in everyday life.” Driving in traffic is actually more dangerous and unpredictable than an Arctic expedition, he says. “In a hostile place, the risk is reduced by being competent and well-prepared. I have a stress-free job.” ●

hat do you love most about a Canyon Ranch vacation? Is it the crystalline seascape with graceful white sails in the distance? The intriguing whispers of Aegean myths?

CONNECTION | WINTER into SPRING 2016 | canyonranch.com

Canyon Ranch Wellness Resort at Kaplankaya, Turkey, opens this summer and will be an exquisite addition to our family of destination spas. The spectacular coastline and clear views to Greek islands will thrill you as you enjoy your favorite Ranch activities, spa services, fitness and nutrition expertise – plus an ambience and scenery unique to this location. “We’re taking our modern approach to wellness to a part of the world where healthy traditions go back thousands of years,” says Aras Erekul, MD, Wellness Program Director for global development of Canyon Ranch. As a native of Turkey, he brings invaluable insights and perspective to this project. “This is a special place, not far from the Temple of Apollo. Farther north, there’s a site that honors the goddess of Hygieia. Both are so appropriate to Canyon Ranch.” Dr. Erekul explains that Apollo was the god of healing, while Hygieia was the goddess of wellness. “She represented feeling good every day, which is the ultimate goal of Canyon Ranch,” he says. “In a way, Canyon Ranch is our temple to Hygieia.” He also points to the prime Aegean location, honoring the tradition of thalassotherapy, or the use of sea water for medicinal purposes. “People long ago understood the health benefits you can draw from water,” he says. “It’s a practice we’ll continue at Canyon Ranch with many aquatic offerings.” Water opportunities will include everything available at the U.S. resorts and at Canyon Ranch SpaClub® in Las Vegas – plus a whole sea at your feet. So in one day you could have a stress-melting Watsu treatment, experience an authentic hamam (the original Turkish steam bath), unwind in the expansive aquathermal cabins of our signature Aquavana suite, then lounge on a pristine beach for pure relaxation. Of course, you can also snorkel, kayak, sail, fish, swim – or go scuba diving to explore waters with abundant flora and colorful creatures. You might even see a sunken wreck! “This area is rich in historical treasures, under water and on land,” Dr. Erekul says. “Daily hikes will go through legendary terrain and to archeological ruins.” In addition to all the outdoor activities, fitness classes, spa treatments, and excursions to nearby antiquities, you’ll find the full complement of integrative health specialists at Canyon Ranch at Kaplankaya.

“The integrative wellness approach will match what you find at the resorts,” he says. “We’re assembling a team of experts in medicine, nutrition, exercise physiology and complementary specialties. It will be an extraordinary group.” Canyon Ranch culinary experts are also excited about reaching new shores. The resort’s two lovely restaurants – complete with staggering views – will serve wholesome cuisine using the freshest and finest seasonal, local ingredients. Expect amazing seafood and regional flavors. Wait till you taste the local olive oils! “This year-round resort will have everything you expect at Canyon Ranch,” says Dr. Erekul; “the setting, the history, the sea – it’s all very inspiring.”

I

f you could choose one character trait for yourself – and who says you can’t? – the smartest choice may be resilience. Research points to resilience as the quality most likely to enhance and prolong your life. Happily, experts say it’s a quality anyone can cultivate with hard work, a willingness to face difficult challenges head-on, and some simple daily practices. “Resilience is the capacity to constructively cope with adversity,” says Jeff Rossman, PhD, Director of Life Management at Canyon Ranch in Lenox. “Resilient people can face changes, loss and setbacks without breaking down emotionally or physically.”

Resilience in the face of

change Resilience can protect against depression – a significant benefit in light of the Centers for Disease Control estimate that 9 percent of Americans (28 million) have reported depressive episodes and 3.4 percent (nearly 11 million) suffer from major depression. “Resilient people are less likely to suffer from depression, and when they do, they recover more rapidly,” says Diane Downing, MD, a physician at Canyon Ranch in Tucson. Furthermore, Dr. Downing says, the research tells us that people lacking resilience often cling to negative emotions – a trait that correlates to higher incidence of breast cancer, cardiovascular disease and heart attacks. Such individuals are known as Type D (for distressed) personalities and tend toward pessimistic habits of thought. However, don’t despair if you’re often disposed to view the glass as half-empty. While it’s true that some resilient people seem to have been born that way, it’s possible to train yourself to become more resilient.

8

CONNECTION | WINTER into SPRING 2016 | canyonranch.com

Here are 10 ways you can build resilience, starting today: 1. Allow yourself to feel and accept, rather than avoid, difficult emotions. Resilience is not about denying feelings of sadness, anger or fear in response to adversity. It is about acknowledging those feelings and taking constructive action anyway. 2. Let go of judgment and blame, which tend to drain energy. 3. Find meaning in your personal challenge. Rather than asking, Why did this have to happen to me? ask: What can I do about it? What can I learn from this? or How can I become a better person as a result of going through this experience? 4. Nurture a sense of humor. The ability to see the absurdity in life helps you keep things in perspective. Plus, laughter feels good! 5. Reach out to others for sharing and support. Nonresilient types turn inward and ruminate when times get tough. This seldom accomplishes anything. 6. Believe in your ability to cope with whatever challenge life brings. If necessary, boost your self-confidence by taking on tasks you can control, such as learning a new skill, working on an ambitious project, or seeking out new adventures. 7. Help others. Resilient people know that altruism is not only good in itself; it can be a great stress reliever. 8. Cultivate a connection to something greater than yourself, whether it’s spirituality, religion, a set of core principles, the beauty of nature, or making the world a better place.

“Overall, people who rate higher on the resiliency scale tend to have better physical health and life satisfaction,” Dr. Downing says. “We may not have the power to change everything, but we really can positively influence our overall health through self-esteem, an optimistic outlook and healthpromoting behaviors.” One of her patients, a memorably resilient woman, has pancreatic cancer. “This is a disease that can take a person’s life in a very short time, often within three months. Knowing her state of mind and overall state of health, I’m not surprised that she has done amazingly well – and it’s been 15 months since her diagnosis.”

Be the change that you wish to see in the world. – MAHATMA GANDHI

Dr. Rossman has a similar story. “A good friend of mine went through a several-year battle with a rare advanced stage cancer. A minister, George displayed extraordinary resilience in coping with his illness. He drew heavily on his faith and connection with something greater than himself. He also reached out to family and friends for help.

“George knew what resilient people know – that we can get through tough times better when we confide in others and reach out for support.“ ●

9. Writing can be an invaluable tool to build resilience. Taking a few minutes a day to keep a gratitude journal can transform your life. Another option: Release the negativity within by writing down your feelings on a piece of paper – then burn it! 10. Don’t fear change – learn to accept it, even embrace it. Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”

CANYON RANCH INSTITUTE

T

ransformations in self, philanthrophy & community When one person makes positive changes in life, it can inspire a ripple effect. In the case of Richard Carmona, MD, MPH, FACS, the world has benefitted from his unlikely journey from poor kid – very poor kid – in New York City to 17th Surgeon General of the United States. As a child, he knew hunger and homelessness. He got health care only when his grandmother’s home remedies of herbs and incantations failed. Dr. Carmona remembers going to Richard Izquierdo, MD, who served the city’s poorest people at his tiny Bronx office. “He put the first stitches in my head,” he recalls. Dr. Carmona dropped out of high school, joined the U.S. Army, earned his GED, and served as a Special Forces medic and weapons specialist. After Vietnam, he went on to college, medical school, a master’s degree in public health and four years as America’s top doctor. “After I served as Surgeon General, Mel and Enid Zuckerman asked me to help with their philanthropy,” says Dr. Carmona, who had known Canyon Ranch and its founders for years. “I believed in their goals, and they’d always been generous, but it was a random approach. How could they tell if they were making a lasting difference?” That’s when Dr. Carmona became Vice Chairman of Canyon Ranch and President of Canyon Ranch Institute (CRI), transforming wellintentioned giving into smart philanthropy. “I got together the best team, starting with Jennifer Cabe, our executive director,” he says. “We had permission to use Canyon Ranch intellectual property to set up public health programs in low-income areas. The first place we tackled was right where I started, in the South Bronx. If we could make a big difference there, we could do it anywhere.”

saw his old South Bronx neighborhood as the perfect place to pilot a community health program based on the weeklong Life Enhancement Center experience at Canyon Ranch in Tucson. The Canyon Ranch Institute Life Enhancement Program was introduced in 2007, and so far more than 700 people have participated nationwide in underserved communities. The results are impressive: Graduates adopt healthier behaviors, lose weight, are less depressed, lower their blood pressure, manage stress better, know more about health and improve their eating habits. “There’s a network of health now. We've seen sustainable improvement across the communities – better health literacy, kids getting vaccinated, fresh fruit is available where it didn’t used to be, and support for fitness and nutrition.” Because of its success, the Canyon Ranch Institute Life Enhancement Program has expanded to many low-income communities, rural and urban, and new CRI programs are being developed. “Our sole purpose is to encourage better health, and the enthusiasm is contagious. We see families transformed, exercising together, kids being more active, planting community gardens,” Dr. Carmona says. “We are health entrepreneurs who partner with our investors to make real, sustainable change. The possibilities are endless.” ●

Spiritual Awareness

Grows

Nature often reflects the journey of our lives. One lovely example is at the Spiritual Wellness Center at Canyon Ranch in Tucson. Less than two years ago, the site was barely a dream. Then the ground was cleared, a Meditation Garden was planted, and the transformation began. From fledgling plants and seeds, the secluded, enclosed haven has grown into a lush hideaway with seating, artwork and fountains; it’s the outdoor focal point of the tranquil and welcoming center. “You could call our Meditation Garden the physical manifestation of transformation, always growing and maturing,” says Director of Spiritual Wellness Stephanie Ludwig, PhD, MDiv. “It’s a place where that temporary sense of tranquillity can inspire a new way of thinking and living.” The garden is open to all Canyon Ranch guests for meditation or pure pleasure. Many find it the perfect spot for contemplating life’s blessings, challenges and transitions. They can cultivate peace and clarity by tapping into their inner wisdom. “People want to understand spirituality in their lives,” Dr. Ludwig says. “We all have different questions: How do I incorporate spirituality into daily life? … How do I share what’s most meaningful to me?” She believes it enriches your spirit when you honor personal evolution, relationships and milestones – whenever that may be meaningful to you. “Big life passages can occur at any time in life, not just confirmations, weddings and such. You're the one who really knows when you're ready to declare an intention, make a vow or move into a new stage. You don’t need a white-dress day to recognize an occasion.”

While at Canyon Ranch in Tucson or Lenox, guests have the opportunity to explore their spirituality with the gentle guidance of experts. Private sessions might include a spiritual journey within, a guided labyrinth experience, addressing grief and loss, and other areas. Dr. Ludwig says certain Ranch services have particularly broad resonance, such as: Rite of Passage. This is chance to create a private ceremony to mark significant life change, choice or transition. It might be to celebrate an achievement, welcome new parenthood, enter retirement, begin or end a relationship, note a milestone birthday or any other event of meaning to you. Imparting Your Spiritual Legacy. Beyond traditional assets and treasured items, you can leave the ones you love with a lasting and meaningful gift that expresses your values, wisdom, life stories and beliefs. You could explore the possibilities of a video, letter, or making something by hand that conveys what you feel. “We provide a safe and nurturing place at the Ranch for self-discovery and growth,” Dr. Ludwig says. “Like our gardens, we grow richer every day.” ●
