y About the Author z Roisin is well known and respected in Reflexology circles in Ireland and abroad. As a reflexology teacher she helped a lot of people. She taught in Belfast in the height of all the troubles with her good friend Martina Barrett. Her work in Belfast was recognised by The Irish Reflexology Institute, The President of Ireland Michael D Higgins, for which she was rewarded. Recognising that we all walk the same piece of Earth, and that the healing that was needed could be found in nature led her to write her book ‘The Crane Bag - Ogham Oils and Essences’, in which trees are our guide. With her information on the Spiritual aspects of trees makes this piece of work engaging and fruitful; and also helpful to nature. So what Tree are you? Find out. As a mother of six children, she has called many times on Neart her strength for support and Divine Mother never lets her down.

y A Song of Life z In Spring, I dug in the garden of my soul The uncultivated, un-trodden Earth. I planted the seeds of growth And watched them unfold to the sky. In summer, I saw them turn golden, Bathed by fusion of Earth and Light. I watched butterflies unexpectedly visit And dark strangers in the night. In Autumn, I struggled to reap the crop, Winnowing the chaff from the grain And, in the golden red sunset, It seemed like it might be all in vain. In dark winter, the seeds faced death, Meditation, investigation, confrontation, Annihilation, desolation, And, in unsuspecting moments, revelations of transformation. And, as the new dawn of Spring reappears, Awakening from imprisonment the seeds of Love To be replanted in the cultured Earth, They lovingly long for the light from above. As tears of healing engulf me like rain, I feel the freshness in my veins. On opening my tired eyes I see That I am becoming what I really am – me.
2
Relentless, I toil in the garden of love, Starlight, moonlight, sunlight, insight, And, as I look in the mirror, I see That I can become what I already am – me.

OGHAM UPRIGHT: By stepping out of the crowd and cleansing, you make a new beginning. REVERSED: Understand the purpose of your journey and focus on your goal.
y BIRCH / BEIT z The quintessence of Birch is EXPANSION Birch is about new beginnings, it is noteworthy that it was Birch which was used in “birching”. The idea being old devils could be beaten out of the individual thus helping him / her to make a new start. It is also noteworthy that we don’t advocate “birching”. Birch was one of the first trees to grow on bare soil. Choosing Birch means you are about to step out of the undergrowth. So it’s time to check the baggage, identifying and leaving behind that which no longer serves you. Physically, mentally and emotionally. Keeping the Birch in mind as you move along your path of awakening can be a wonderful reminder of what is possible, as this, the lady of the forest grew up and out of the undergrowth. Now is the time to open wide your arms to life, to shed some limitations - expansion is calling to you. 4
OGHAM UPRIGHT: You are protected against destructive forces and have control of your senses. REVERSED: You are not discerning enough.
y ROWAN / LUÍS z The quintessence of Rowan is PROTECTION On the landscape the Rowan is like a sentinel, vigilant and custodial. In some places it is known as “the whispering tree” quietly dispensing wisdom for the greater good. Its very essence is of protection, strong in stature, overseeing from its position higher up the mountain side. On our path to awakening there may be an impatience for answers, we can be in a hurry to get “there”. In this haste we can sometimes be easily convinced by people and things (including our own egoic mind) that are not always for our highest good. Choosing this, the whispering tree, you are invited to look at where and with whom you are placing your trust. It is asking you to be more discerning. The invitation is to be still and listen to your inner wisdom, to the whisperings of your intuition. Know that you are being looked after. Trust your intuition, it is always working in your best interests. “I am protected and indestructible. Come what may I am loved. I accept the sweetness and abundance of life and 5 acknowledge my gifts”.
OGHAM UPRIGHT: By forgiving yourself and others, in acceptance you are free flowing and have earned protection in disputes. REVERSED: It is time to forgive yourself and others and become more aware of the need for protection when in conflict.
y ALDER / FEARN z
The quintessence of Alder is EXPRESSION The Alder with its profusion of foliage epitomises the abundance and generosity of life within. The Alder reminds us that we have hidden powers within us that if tapped, provide magnificent resources that allow us to live out our highest ideals. Through unconscious nonacceptance of this we can become angry and frustrated with our lives, blaming ourselves and others for the perceived unhappy lethargic life we are experiencing. The wood of this majestic tree was once used to make bridges and boats. A means of taking us back home to the truth of who we are maybe? In choosing this card the Ogham invites you to look at the judgements you are forming and the grudges you are holding on to. Where and who can you forgive? Where can you let be? Where can bridges be built? The time has come to express the truth of who you are.
6

The quintessence of Willow is EMPATHY Bending over and dropping her tears into the water symbolises the quintessence of the Willow: EMPATHY. The Willow with its flexible body bends with the flow of nature indicating the cycles and rhythms, the ebb and flow of life. With empathy we become more connected and centred, allowing life to flow through us in all the forms that takes, knowing that this is the natural order of things. From this place of connectedness, wisdom arises. Choosing the Willow is an invitation to look at where there is space to be more empathic towards yourself. And to others. To notice if there are areas where you are being rigid and lacking understanding? 7
OGHAM UPRIGHT: You are aware of the part you play in the greater cosmic picture. REVERSED: You have a tendency to intro-version, it’s time to connect yourself to the greater whole.
y ASH / NUIN z The quintessence of ASH is UNIVERSAL TRUTH Ash, a noble of the wood, was seen as the feminine counterpart of the all father Oak. It is one of the sacred Druidic three, and is associated with applications of magic, healing and higher power in lore across the continents. This majestic tree its mass, height, and deeply embedded roots were all metaphors for the spiritually minded.
8
You have chosen the Ash as a powerful reminder that you are never alone, you are part of the greater cosmos; everything and everyone is connected, there is no separation, we are all part of the collective consciousness. The ash speaks to us of growth, expansion, and higher perspective. If we think symbolically we can liken our own soul-growth with that of the ash. With greater (higher) attainment, the more we need to stay grounded (well rooted). Now is the time to connect with your higher power, though meditation and stillness. Remember a magical powerful life is yours.
OGHAM UPRIGHT: By holding back and taking time to cleanse, it is possible to prepare for a new phase. REVERSED: You are trying to go forward too quickly.

It’s branches are twisted with sharp thorns, yet it’s blossoms a delicate beautiful white flower, there is much lore attributed to this tree, most notably a protector of the faeries. It is said to be feminine in its philosophy and is seen as being a crone of the trees - ‘Macha’. In some areas the hawthorn signifies good fortune, in others it signifies the opposite. And maybe it is both or neither. The choosing of this card is an invitation to you to identify what conflicting beliefs or stories are you holding on to, or being driven by. It is inviting you to notice with respect the ever evolving process of clearing old patterns of being. Without force, but through awareness, this cleansing requires patience, diligence, acceptance, compassion and forgiveness. The hawthorn is letting you know that now is the perfect time for your evolution to the next best 9 expression of yourself.

y OAK / DUIR z
The quintessence of OAK is ENDURANCE Ruled by Jupiter the OAK represents the connective wisdom of the earthly and spiritual realm. The Oak, the noblest of wood, can take up to 300 years to mature. Its roots travel as deep into the ground as its branches do to heaven. In Celtic lore this was taken as a sign that it should be honoured for its endurance. The Celtic “Duir can be translated to door; according to ancient lore on opening this door access to higher psychic connection was attained. Choosing the oak is an invitation to notice where there is a lack of stability and strength in your life. Is there an area where you are feeling off centre, unbalanced? Where are you feeling unsure? This, a noble of the woods is counselling you that you are stronger than your mind can imagine. You should know that you have an incredible ability to face the challenge of life head on.

They were eaten by the salmon, thus knowledge from the hazel was absorbed by the salmon; the last name of Fionn who later ate the salmon was Mac Coll (son of Hazel). In choosing this card you are asked to not merely take the fruit of knowledge and let it just be that, but to digest it along with all of your life experiences, allowing time for the lessons to be absorbed. This gives rise to the insights and to the very nature of life and your part within it. Thus taking you back home to the seat of your intuition, guiding you from moment to moment. Helping you to respond intuitively and intelligently to life rather than reacting from a limited place of fear or ignorance. Intuition is your highest connection.

y Apple / Quert z The quintessence of APPLE is DECISIVENESS In the orchard filled with many delicious apples all equally inviting, deciding which to choose can be difficult. In choosing the vine you are asked to look at your situation from a different perspective. The vine knows you are tired and need nourishment. It is strong and difficult to destroy. But it has the capacity to suffocate other plants in its path and obscure if left unchecked. Growing in a helix pattern the ivy represents the spiral of the self and the search for the self. It also symbolises the soul's wandering inward and outward seeking nourishment and experience from both inside and out to achieve awakening. This beautiful card is asking you to know that like the ivy too much outward seeking, accumulating of information, the addiction to more (which can sometimes happen on the path to awakening) has the capacity to suffocate and/or obscure the source of awakening, the truth within. This is an invitation to curtail your wanderings; be still and rest. Freedom is not always the ability for movement, the most precious freedom of all is to know that what you are is 15 already complete, awaiting patiently your homecoming.

In choosing this card you are invited to “tune in” to your centre, your place of wisdom and power. In doing so you are allowing your traverse through life to be one of ease and fluidity, where you may be bent by the travails of your journey but like the reed by the river’s edge will not be broken. You are flexible.

One wouldn't easily or readily pass through a blackthorn hedge unless there was no other choice. The pronunciation of ‘Straif’ is similar to strife, which is evocative of the feeling of this Ogham. Choosing this card may indicate that you are holding on tightly to old ways and facing challenges with anger and stubbornness and maybe some arrogance. This card is a tap on the shoulder to say there is nothing you can do now to alter the situation you find yourself in. Accept it and take from it the gift it is offering. This card is about learning lessons when choices are absent. It is an invitation to surrender to ‘what is’. It requires great wisdom to surrender. Within this surrender a new fulfilling phase of growth will emerge. 17

Lore tells us that the wood from this tree was used in the making of shields Choosing this tree is an invitation to notice the fear that is arising within you. Life is uncertain, everything is constantly changing, things are always happening, but it is the “story” we tell ourselves about what is happening that creates this fear. This is the natural order of things, like our breath, out breath follows in breath making room for the next in breath, and so it flows. When we obstruct this natural flow there is no space for growth. Notice where you are holding on, maybe an idea, a judgement, situation, or a belief. What are you not releasing and letting in? This fruit has brought much joy and laughter to children and adults alike throughout the years. The symbolism of the fruit of the Horse Chestnut is a powerful metaphor for life, the treasure that lies within. Choosing the Horse Chestnut is your permission slip to crack open, the shell that has been your protection. Now is the time to uncover the “all” of who you are. Fresh, wide-eyed and full of childlike wonder you now can experience the fullness of life with delight. 36

Another distinguishing feature of this majestic tree is its propensity to drop large boughs without prior warning, on still warm days. You have chosen this card to remind you that strength isn't in the holding on, your strength is in knowing when to release (as in the dropping of the bough). Because we are not always aware of residual memories that are carried within, the Elm invites you to return to your true nature ‌ that you are of love. Through the process of meditation and connecting with nature, tapping into your creative source, you release effortlessly the un-named but felt weight. This will clear the passage way to your divine face. 38
OGHAM UPRIGHT: Because of your links with the higher mind, you are able to honour your own individuality. You have become wise. REVERSED: By not listening to the elders your energy has become depleted and scattered. Trust and honour your true nature.

Just as the Arbutus, you don’t have to immediately shed last year's growth to make way for new gifs to present. It is unobtrusive in its movement, it doesn't force itself on the garden, yet is adored and brings its humility and light to sometimes darker spaces. In life there are many opportunities in every moment to fully experience the abundance of existence, but you have to give yourself fully over to the experiences with acceptance. If you stand outside the garden gate you will not be drawn into the tenderness of the sweet pea. And if you stand on the periphery of life you are a spectator with limited view. In choosing this card you are asked to graciously accept the invitation to fully engage with all that life has to offer. As in the garden you may not want or like all that is there, but unless you step through the gate you won't get to immerse yourself with that which will feed your soul and invite expansion. A life well lived is not about judging good or bad, but in gaining insight from 42acceptance and clear seeing of all that is.

Inula has the loveliest flower and its colour yellow lifts our spirits helping our solar plexus, where a lot of fear is stored, preventing us from progressing on our journey. There is abundant help for us. We need only to trust ourselves enough to ask. The Humming bird, is a bird of true amazment. It flaps its wings while picking off insects as food off the tree maintaining a perfect balance while all the time flapping its wings and creating the figure eight. It has to hover to feed while ensuring survival. Energy, light and healing is available to us through Inula.

Chaos on the planet leads us to the decision to find this balance within ourselves. The journey to the inner core of ourselves leads us to our soul path, where we discover again the mother in her many guises. There is an old Irish Proverb ‘Ni Neart Go Cur Le Chéile’. y A Story z Long long ago in Ireland there lived a very powerful race of people. Many invaders came here to rob and plunder and tried to control the native people, the native Irish. Tuatha De Danann were the native people, who were in power and they had a very particular type of spirituality. They were known as the people of the Light. They lived by the laws of nature and the seasons and were respected by the Fir Bolg who invaded the country. The Tuatha De Danann fought some of these invaders and won, but then came the Milesians from Spain and the Tuatha de Danann decided not to fight them. They allowed them to win and instead of fighting then they changed form and took off to the hills and woods and land where they have remained ever since. There they remained as the fairies or the SĂaga (SĂ) of which we hear so much. They look after the land, nature, the environment, trees etc. People think that they are gone, but they are alive in nature and when we walk on grass, or in the woods at the subconscious level we are making contact with them. They also live by Hawthorns and Blackthorns and this is where the story of not cutting down a hawthorn or blackthorn has originated. 60

Mhair siad de réir dlithe an nadúir agus na séasr agus bhí urraim is meas ag na Fir Bolg orthus, nuair a d’ionsaigh siadsan an tír. Throid Tuatha De Danann i gcoinne na nionróirí agus bhí an bua acu. Ina dhiaidh sin, áfach, tháinig lucht eile, na Míolaoisigh, ón Spáina agus chlaigh Tuatha De Danann rompu, gan dul i gcomhraic leo. Lig siad do na Míolaoisigh an bua a fháil agus thrith siad chuig na sleíbhte, áit a chuir siad futhu ó shoin. Thug siad aire don talamh agus don timpeallacht agus fós is iadsan na síopa, nó na daoine Sí, a chloistear morán futhu. Inniu ceapann daoine go bhfuil siad inithe ón tír ach tá láthaireacht acu fós sa nadúir. Gach uair a shiilimid sna páirceanna nó ins na coillte, táimid ag teangmháil leo go fochoinsiasach.
