History The folding rule is a STABILA invention. In 1865, in a small village in Germany, the foundation stone was laid for an ideas factory, whose inventions and patents simplified, improved and revolutionised measurement. The insistence on top quality runs like a marking thread throughout our company’s history.

How seriously do you take your work? Any craftsman, architect or DIY enthusiast who is serious about his work sooner or later chooses the products with the black and yellow trademark. Measuring instruments that are accurate and remain accurate and where all the components are of the same high quality.

STABILA 2–3

Our best tool: an inventive mind

From 1865 to the present day: inventions + patents + innovations

As with many things in life, the same applies to measuring instruments: top quality may be a little more expensive initially but it pays for itself over the years. As an example: with a low-quality spirit level, the vial is glued, screwed or jammed in. Even if it was accurately positioned during assembly, every time it is used, it can change its position. If you then bring the vial bubble horizontal, the measurement surfaces are tilted. STABILA therefore manufactures spirit levels with firmly cast in, electronically measured vials. One of our many patents. So, with STABILA, horizontal stays horizontal. For which we give a 10-year guarantee.

The best idea of all time for measuring: the foldable rule.

+Easy to carry – measuring straight lines: the spring joint allows the sections to lock tightly together when opening or closing the rule.

+The principle of the tape measure owes its origin to the coilable rule.

+Unbreakable acrylic glass vials

bring the age of ordinary glass to an end for spirit levels.

+Robust, distortion-free, light metal spirit levels replace the wooden spirit levels that have been used for centuries.

+A patent which has still to be

surpassed provides spirit levels with life-long accuracy – STABILA casts the vials permanently into place in the profile.

+Just as unique: the spiked hook at the end of the pocket tape measure prevents the end from slipping.

Creative idea: STABILA incorporates a laser into the spirit level. A precision base-plate allows all-round measurement; the sighting system means that the instrument can be used over long distances.

+Spirit levels become more innovative

every year: patented impact protection for brick-layers, special models for electricians and plumbers with standard measurement systems, extra-strong rare earth magnets and anti-slip stoppers to prevent movement, electronic spirit levels with acoustic signals, telescopic systems for extremely long spirit levels.

+And, of course, the laser also benefits

from the wealth of inventions discovered by this long-established company: the unique protector system protects the lasers used on construction sites if they fall over or are dropped. Other lasers are equipped with an integral protective frame and their height can be varied. A special laser revolutionised pipe-laying and cable installation in wooden framework walls and beam construction. Receivers for lasers with a modulated pulse line and a new generation with digital displays complete the range of modern measuring technology.

• Fast self-levelling quality pendulum laser switch on and get going. • The ultra-sharp, wide-angle horizontal line is always easily visible. The wideangle aperture provides an extra-long line. You can make even faster and more accurate progress with your work.

Plumb-level line laser Type LA-2PL Laser functions

• Bi-directional plumb laser: plumb up/down from floor to ceiling at the same time easy marking and transfer even in high rooms and poor weather. • Quality made in Germany. You know what you’ve got.

The new performance class from STABILA makes you perform better: the wide-angle horizontal laser line and two plumb lasers optimise the most important laser functions when erecting wood or metal structures. Can be used anywhere. The Type LA-2PL plumb-level line laser can be used on the floor, on a tripod, on building components and, as illustrated here, on the rotating multi-purpose platform.

LA-2PL

The LA-2PL is the first STABILA laser with a modulated pulse line. The extra-wide 150° aperture for the horizontal laser line makes the LA-2PL perhaps the longest spirit level in the world. A spirit level which can go round corners like child’s play. You can use the REC 210 Line receiver to extend the range of functions and applications: See page 38.

The LA-2PL can be positioned among suspended ceiling support profiles using the multi-purpose platform and wall mounting bracket.

The wall bracket can be secured by screws or nails.

Rare-earth magnets clamp the multi-purpose platform to iron and steel: 5 times more firmly than conventional ferrite magnets.

The extendable centering feet fix the laser into a tube. The plumb up and down function is centred in this way.

STABILA recommends the high-performance Type REC 210 Line receiver and the NL levelling rod. Further information on pages 38–39.

With STABILA’s automatic pendulum rotation laser, you can work at an unbelievable speed with the greatest accuracy. Once erected, the unit is immediately ready for use. The selflevelling range of 1° enables the unit easily to be adjusted for large irregularities of up to 9° by inclining the casing manually. The whole laser casing is fitted with slip-on covers on the high-grade steel handles.

This type of construction enables the laser beam to be adjusted vertically by approx. 12 cm directly on the unit. The rotary laser beam, together with the receiver, also enables you to work without a problem over large distances outdoors.

Tripods Tripods are one of the most important tools when working with lasers. With the aid of a laser mounted on a tripod (depending on the type and height of the tripod) virtually every height from 50 cm to 285 cm can be levelled horizontally. Modern tripods are made from aluminium and are therefore very light but also very sturdy. The different designs of the leg extension and locking mechanisms also enable the tripod to be erected quickly on uneven surfaces. Measuring surface with bridging plates – for bridging uneven areas of wood or masonry.

The measuring surfaces The measuring surfaces on spirit levels can be designed in various ways. In most cases, the complete body of the spirit level, including the measuring surface, is powder-coated, painted or anodised, but on some spirit levels the measuring surface is also milled flat after the coating process. In every case, it is important that the surface be completely smooth. For this reason, not every side of a spirit level can be used as a measuring surface.

1

The end caps Permanent impact-resistant plastic end caps are used to protect the measuring surfaces. The upright height of the level’s hollow profile must be appropriately dimensioned to provide good shock-absorption. STABILA also provides end caps with practical additional functions.

The aluminium spirit level profile The profile constitutes an extension of the vial and must therefore be made of a lasting and stable material. This material combines great practicality, low weight and optimum handling. Smooth rectangular profile

At last, a spirit level especially for electrical and installation work. The STABILA solution: Marking holes at standardised distances, with each hole located perfectly! Now you can measure and mark out horizontals or verticals and the distance between sockets or switches in a single operation. That demonstrably saves time and money. On the one hand, it saves on mental arithmetic and having to juggle with several measuring instruments – while, on the other hand, you save money on retouching the plaster. In accordance with DIN 49075, the distance for combinations of drill holes is 71 mm.

Materials and coating For wooden rules, the most important factor for optimum unbreakability is to use choice, well stored, highly elastic woods as the primary material. For plastic rules, glass fibrereinforced plastic provides the greatest durability. The coating on the wooden rules must be able to handle every adversity. They are protected against damp, sun and mechanical abrasion. This is the only way to ensure the scale’s good, long-term legibility.

Their quality is recognisable by:

3

Construction of a joint with a concealed rivet

High quality steel plate joint with side tongues

1 2 High-quality finish folding rule head STABILA has a long tradition of only using choice, high-quality beech as the base material for its wooden rules. This makes the rules especially hard-wearing.

The environmentallyfriendly lacquer to the company’s own formulation, provides unsurpassed weather and abrasion resistance.

3

The joints STABILA predominantly uses joints made from hardened spring steel, which ensure precise engagement and good spring action long-term. Catches and end cams provide strong retention, guaranteeing accuracy. Its special construction makes the joint operate smoothly over a long period. Highly durable glass fibre-reinforced polyamide joints are used on some models.

2

The printing A quality rule can be immediately recognised by the marking on its first section. Look for four important pointers: 1. the nominal length 2. the rule’s accuracy classification which is indicated in Roman numerals 3. EU type approval certification 4. the CE and metrology marks. And last but not least, the manufacturer’s name, in other words the

brand which confirms the rule’s origin and construction. The graduation scale, the most important feature, must be printed clearly and show an obvious distinction between units and tens. A double millimetre scale (on the upper and lower edge) increases the rule’s usefulness.

STABILA rules 78–79

The unique advantage of a measuring tape is that it can provide measurements up to 100m long in a compact form. There are different types of measuring tapes to suit different applications and different measurement distances. Pocket tape measures: Usable anywhere, small, light and easy to carry, on your belt or in your pocket, and ideal for measurements up to approx. 10 m. Cased measuring tapes: For measuring distances up to 30 m. Open-frame measuring tapes: For measuring distances up to 100 m, as commonly required in road construction and landscaping work.

All about measuring tapes

Particular features indicating the quality of the measuring tape are: 1. The accuracy. The following details are marked at the beginning of high-quality measuring tapes: nominal length, the CE and metrology mark, the accuracy class and the manufacturer’s brand. 2. The tape’s composition. • For pocket tape measures, the tape’s durability is an important factor: for this reason, most steel tapes are concave and have a resistant coating to protect the graduated scale from abrasion by particles of dirt. • Cased and open frame measuring tapes with steel or fibreglass tapes. Steel measuring tapes suffer from more significant changes in length, depending on the temperature but require less traction force for precise measurements than fibreglass tapes. The design and the material protect the steel tape against friction and breaking.

3. The tape end. Special end hooks for different applications: folding hook, plumblines, eyes, rings, etc., included in the measurement or not. A STABILA patent on pocket tape measures: the only hook that does not slip. A spikes hook whose little sapphire spikes enable it to hold on all by itself. Standard designs for the beginning of the tape: For cased measuring tapes, a pull ring. For open-frame measuring tapes, a particularly large pull-ring with notches for vertical measurement. Different tape beginnings available.

4. The casing. Different materials are used to provide protection and easy, long-term safe handling. For cased and open frame measuring tapes, this is usually ABS plastic but metal is also used for some individual casings and frames. The mechanical parts of open frame measuring tapes are made from steel, aluminium or high-quality plastic. On pocket tape measures, the gripping area is often covered with soft rubber.

5. Useful additional functions increase the measuring tape’s practicality: for instance, buffers on the tape mouth, a tape return brake, a blade lock and a variety of end hooks. Almost without exception, STABILA pocket tape measures have the patented spikes hook that prevents the hook from slipping on smooth surfaces.

All about levelling boards, wedge shape darbies and feather edges • Profiled shapes for producing finished surfaces are feather edges.

Levelling boards, wedge shape darbies and feather edges are simple but effective tools used as an aid in producing large, smooth surfaces. To ensure that these tools last and remain accurate for a long time, they are made from drawn aluminium profile. The distinction between the individual categories comes from their area of application, which dictates the shape of their cross-section.

• Profiles for skimming and levelling materials are wedge shape darbies.

It is much easier to work with levels if they are equipped with additional components. In the first place, this involves horizontal and vertical vials. To improve handling, a handhold is often integrated into the profile. For rapid and accurate results, these products are available in different lengths, giving you the opportunity to have the appropriate length of tool for your particular working surface.
