Dear Distinguished Guests, Thank you all very much for joining us in the celebration of the 30th annual Asian/Pacific American (A/PA) Heritage Festival. For a moment, breathe deeply and take in this setting. This event, kicking off A/PA Heritage Month, is our community’s cherished springtime ritual of renewal. Today, at the foothills of the United Nations, at the lush respite of Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, we pay special attention to our rich Asian American traditions and celebrate our heritage, which represents our valued legacy from the past, a living record of how we live today, and what we can build now to pass on to future generations. A/PA communities across America are working to fully realize their dreams in these environs, a country where its citizens can mingle in the common pursuit of learning and advancement. It is a place where we were once immigrants, fresh from foreign lands, but still had equal claim to economic opportunity and rule of law. Today, in an ever more interwoven global economy, we remember the legacy our ancestors have left and use it to build new roads in the 21st century. The A/PA Heritage Festival also clearly demonstrates the valuable role served by public events as a platform to promote dialogue and engagement among the Asian American community and our treasured neighbors. We have been fortunate enough to indulge in building a series of powerful public-private partnerships. We hope to continue growing and involve even more stakeholders in hosting our annual community festival. We give special thanks to our partners including the NYC Parks Department, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Con Edison, Passport to Taiwan, Five Points NYC, State Farm, Chinatown Partnership, Citigroup, CUNY’s AAARI, Ito En, Goldman Sachs, Different Roads to Learning, and Fresh Concentrate for providing a foundation of trust and reciprocity. MASTERS OF CEREMONY AIR TABIGUE is a producer, host and stand up comedian from Long Island New York. In 2004, he won the Eastern Division of the First Asian American Stand Up Comedy Competition held by Takeout Comedy. He currently hosts and produces the Jammin Asian Variety Show at the Laugh Lounge. JEN KWOK is the world's only pianoplaying accountant turned ukulelestrumming comedian! A finalist in NBC's Stand-Up for Diversity, Jen was brought to national attention after only a few months of performing stand-up, and has quickly established herself as one of the quirkiest young comedians on the scene. Martial Arts A long-standing tradition at the Heritage Festival has been the exhibition of various schools of Martial Arts from across Asia and the Pacific. WU MEI KUNG FU ASSOCIATION - Wu Mei Pai is a classical Chinese martial art. Founded by Wu Mei, the daughter of a Ming Imperial general, it was subsequently developed and preserved at the southern Shaolin temple. Wu Mei Pai is unusually comprehensive: long and short in range, hard and soft in expression, and utilizing internal and external forces; it is at once a powerful system of selfdefense, a complex health and longevity practice, and a profound spiritual discipline. Seventh generation grandmaster Sifu Ken Lo teaches and oversees all classes at the Headquarters school. The class atmosphere is supportive, non-threatening, non-violent, and non-competitive. Students are taught individually in a group setting and will develop strength, power, flexibility, endurance, and skill. BYAKOKAN DOJO - Battojutsu is a form of Japanese swordsmanship. It's main characteristic is that it utilizes the idea of drawing and cutting in one motion although this idea is very interchangeable to iaido or iai jutsu. One key difference however is the emphasis on tameshigiri or test cutting in battojutsu. Toyama Ryu Battojutsu is an art that was formulated for the use by the Japanese military. The origin of the techniques come from the Omori set of Eishin Ryu and was formulated by the sword saint of that period, Nakayama Hakudo. Made for applicable battlefield use, the techniques of Toyama Ryu are done standing compared to that of many iaido schools which are mainly from a seated posture. KAVITA VYAS - MEHANDI ARTIST Mehandi, the art of painting designs on the skin of hands and feet, began over 100 years ago in India by the Muslims, mostly in Pakistan. It is also widely done by Arab peoples. This art form came about as a result of women whose hands are the only parts of their bodies visible. Kavita Vyas learned Mehandi from the master Mrs. Saroj Oza, who created the cone method. She taught Mehandi in India before coming to New York in 1996 for treatment of her polio condition. Kavita and her Mehandi art were covered on the 10 O’clock News on Channel 11 in 1996. Kavita also does fabric painting, clay pot painting and cosmetics for brides. YE XUN, DOUGH FIGURINE MASTER ARTIST Dough modeling is a traditional Chinese handicraft that has continued to develop for over 700 years. Mr. Ye Xun, born in Zhejiang, has combined the qualities of both his master teachers, the poetic sensibility of Master Zhao Kou Ming with the realistic representation of color and manner of Master Lang Shao An (his grandfather). His figures appear life-like with a sense of vitality in the scenes and characters of his work. His work include the famous mythological characters such as the Monkey King from "Journey to the West", the Eight Immortals and the Goddess of Mercy. He has also won numerous awards for his designs including First Place in the Zhejiang Provincial Competition for Best Design. JAMPA YOUDEN TIBETEN JEWERLY DESIGNER Jampa Youden grew up in one of the many nomadic communities in Tibet, where the land is vast (larger than Texas and California together), streams are crystal clear, where there are herds of sheep, birds, meadows of fragrant flowers and medicinal plants, surrounded by snow capped mountains. He learned to sing from his grandfather. The songs are of nomadic life since 70% of the Tibetan population is nomadic. From a family of singers, he and his brothers are often invited to sing at special occasions, weddings and parties. At age thirty he escaped with family members to Nepal before coming to the United States.. He thinks singing is like medicine. He says, "It is free to be happy." He tells of the Tibetan proverb, "When you are happy, you enjoy wine. When you are sad, you must tame your mind." He has also taught himself jewelry design. Taking his cue from traditional works he has brought this kind of design back in new materials, sizes and forms, sometimes using beads from Arizona.

MING LIANG LU: MASTER PAPERCUTTER OF PORTRAITS - Ming Liang Lu began studying calligraphy with his father at the age of five. He also studied carving, sculpture and engraving under the tutelage of renowned Shanghai artists such as Zheng Chi Lai, Shu Xun Long and Wu Su Wei. In 1981 he was commissioned to replicate a miniature scale model of Qing Pu Dai Guan Garden with 796 stone sculptures, some as small as a grain of rice. His sculptures were exhibited in the US from 1980 to 1985 and received wide acclaim. A creation from this period, "Dawn", was enlarged into a public art piece over five meters tall and is now permanently installed in the Shanghai Hua Xin Garden. He been in the US for nineteen years and continues to receive awards at various art shows here. ROSE SIGAL-IBSEN: CALLIGRAPHER Rose Sigal-Ibsen has practiced calligraphy for many years and won critical acclaim for her work. Born in Romania and migrating from Israel to the US, she worked as an enamelist after studying at FIT. In 1979 she began her study of Sumi ink at the KoHo School of Sumi-e in NY and later Chinese brushwork at the Zhejiang Academy in China. She has won Awards of Excellence from the Kampo Cultural Center and from the Manhattan Arts International magazine. She has exhibited widely, for example, in China at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, in Bucharest at the Roumanian Cultural Foundation, and in the US at the Steinhardt Conservatory and the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC.

Kid’s Corner This year’s festival will include a children’s activities area, where kids can learn more about some of the cultures through hands-on activities, a sampling of heritage and culture for younger minds. PROFESSIONAL FACEPAINTING Presented by Barbara Calvano & and her team of Motives makeup artists, in partnership with Rosalind De Innocentiis, of R-D Beauty. Thank you for demonstration how important (and success) public-private partnerships can be! They will be using facepainting make up from Motives Cosmetics by Loren Ridinger. JAPAN - FISH KITES In Japan, kids enjoy a special celebration each year on May 5th. It's called Children's Day. During the day, children fly kites, wear traditional clothing including a kimono, and eat tasty rice cakes wrapped in bamboo leaves. Families hang colorful kites and streamers from bamboo poles outside their homes. Come make a fish kite and then run with the wind to see them take off. THAILAND – ELEPHANT TREKKING Elephants have been revered in Thailand for many centuries. Famous as the strongest beasts of burden, in Thailand they were important in battle with kings mounted on Elephants and have been noted for their intelligence, memory and pleasant nature. The massive body symbolizes strength and peace. Come design your very own elephant in your choice of one of many scenic habitats. KOREA – DOLL MAKING These dolls showcase different traditional costumes- the most striking is without a doubt the Hanbok, worn by Koreans of all ages, particularly on traditional holidays and when attending social affairs with a traditional Korean theme. The Hanbok is characterized by its simple lines and the fact that it has no pockets. With its roots stretching back many centuries, it will continue to grace the streets of Korea for many years to come. PHILIPPINES – THE JEEPNEY: KING OF THE ROAD What do you do when you can’t find a taxi or bus? A symbol of Filipino ingenuity, creativity, festivity… step onto any Manila street and you immediately witness the effects of the reign of this ‘King of the Road.’ While adorned with many colors and
designs these steel works of art can carry 6 – 18 people and provide shade to all its guests. Join us as we create miniature models of the Jeepney. CHINA – DRAGON STREAMERS Usually depicted as a long, snake-like creature with numerous claws, the Chinese Dragon has long been a potent symbol of auspicious power in Chinese folklore and art. It symbolizes the bringing of good luck and prosperity in the year to come for all the human beings on earth. In this activity, we will design color-streamer Dragon Heads. PAKISTAN – CARPET GALLERY The town of Lahore, also known as the Heart of Pakistan, is the second largest city and is known for their famous carpet-makers using popular motifs such as medallions, paisleys, traceries, and geometric designs. Beautiful hand-knotted carpets are tremendous export of this South Asia country. In this activity, join us as we design our own rugs. NEPAL – BUTTERFLY ZONE Although it is a tiny country resting on the border between China and India, its environment is very unique. Did you know that the beautiful country of Nepal is the home to over 500 species of butterflies? Show off your creativity and design your very own butterfly design. HAWAI'I - LEI MAKING The Lei custom was introduced to the Hawaiian Islands by early Polynesian voyagers, who took an incredible journey from Tahiti, navigating by the stars in sailing canoes. With these early settlers, the Lei tradition in Hawaii was born. Leis were constructed of flowers, leaves, shells, seeds, nuts, feathers, and even bone and teeth of various animals.
