29 Annual Asian Pacific American Heritage Festival
WELCOME May 10, 2008 Dear Friends, Today is a glorious day !! On behalf of my Executive Board, I present to you the 29th Annual Asian Pacific American Heritage Festival. My team and I had worked hard to bring together a splendid line-up of Asian, Asian American and Pan-Asian artists for your hearing and viewing pleasure. In addition, we have an extraordinary selection of Asian delicacies to satisfy your epicurean delights. Moreover, when you get a chance to tear yourself away from the astonishing display of Asian Pacific American culture and art, look around and notice the Heritage Festival banners hanging proudly around Dag Hammarskjold Plaza. This year’s banners are specially colorful and vibrant which is very much like the rich and diverse cultural splendor on display today. In it’s 29th year, the Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans is delighted to start exciting new elements to the Heritage Festival – the 1st Annual CAPA Commercial Clip Competition with the theme “my CAPA Festival Experience”, a special exhibition open to festival goers at the Japan Society and spiritual cleansing & blessing at the gazebo organized by the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple. I hope you enjoy these new additions to the Heritage Festival. I’d like to make special mention the presence of Ms. Raj Kwatra who is in her eighties and had been a festival attendee for the past decade. In her frail physical condition, she had made several phone calls to the CAPA office to confirm the date and location of the Heritage Festival. Her determination for not missing today’s festival had inspired me to make sure that her festival experience is the best ever to date. At this point, I’d like to thank the Asian Pacific American community for their unwavering support of the Heritage Festival. Without this support, the Heritage Festival would not have been possible. Moreover, I’d like to thank Julie Azuma for her kindness, generosity and wisdom for guiding this year’s Executive Board. I’d like to thank our sponsors who through this challenging time had continued to support the Heritage Festival – Con Edison, Citi Foundation, Different Roads to Learning, Imaginasian TV, Sino Television, Buddha’s Light International Association, Chinese Radio Inc., Chung Wah Chinese Broadcasting Co. and Feng Shui Marketing. Thanks so much for celebrating with us today !! Cheers,

Chang joined WNBC from WNYC-TV, where he was host of his own talk show, New York Hotline. Prior to that, he was an investigative producer at ABC News. Chang is the recipient of numerous awards. In 1996, he won the prestigious Peabody Award for a series of reports he filed on accused drug-dealing murderers. In 2004, he won a New York Press Club award for his reports on a shooting at City Hall. He received an Edward R. Murrow Award in 2005 for a piece exposing police officers using a helicopter and high tech infra-red equipment to spy on private citizens. Chang has also won four Emmys; the Philadelphia, Denver and Detroit Press Association awards; and, the Associated Press and United Press International awards. Very active in Asian-American community affairs, Chang was both a national and local New York Board member of the Asian-American Journalists Association. NINA PINEDA, Eyewitness News Team Reporter Nina Pineda joined the Eyewitness News Team in October of 2000. Prior to making the move the "Big Apple" Nina worked in her hometown of Pittsburgh, "The Steel City" for the ABC affiliate WTAE-TV. Nina's first job in the news business was a position as the AFTRA (American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) reporter-trainee for WTTG-TV; the Fox affiliate in Washington, D.C. Before becoming a journalist, Nina's work included lobbying on Capital Hill for Governor Mario Cuomo's Washington Office and a position with the Presidential Inaugural Committee handling celebrity relations for former President Bill Clinton. Most recently, Nina helped the Eyewitness News Team cover the tragedy of the attack on America, September 11, 2001. "Three days before the attack I was covering the MTV Music Awards live from Lincoln Center, our anchors Bill Ritter and Diana Williams were joking with me on air about how terribly young the awardees were. 72 hours later, it was amazing how trivial that report seemed. Everyone's world turned upside down, and as journalists we were trying to get as close to the towers as possible that Tuesday morning. Many of us wound up running for our lives." For Nina, reporting on the tragedy live from Lower Manhattan and her subsequent reports from the family centers and hospitals has changed her entire outlook on the profession of journalism. "This is a time where a new generation of reporters has a chance to renew the public's view of the media. Never before has it been more important to provide our viewers with substantial information, unbiased accounts of the events which affect our world, and most of all, deliver reports with sensitivity and genuine caring for victims, no matter what the story is." "It's a privilege to cover the news in an area with the diversity of the metro area," Nina says. "Our viewers are the most savvy in the world. They count on us to give them 100% fair and balanced reporting, plus make our stories interesting to watch. It's a challenge I strive to deliver on every day." Nina is a summa cum laude graduate of Syracuse University with a BA in political science. Nina currently lives in Manhattan. Her interests are scuba diving, biking, politics and adventure travel.

The origin of the techniques come from the Omori set of Eishin Ryu and was formulated by the sword saint of that period, Nakayama Hakudo. Gallery hrs. are M-F 12:30 – 6:30pm DUONG TRUNG, Fortune Teller Duong Trung learned his trade from the elders of his family in Vietnam. He practices not only fortune telling but also the art of Feng Shui. Because of the occult nature of fortune telling, it is not a traditional practice to disclose the story of his personal and artistic development to the public. This practice, dating back to ancient times, is based on the five elements of metal, wood, water, fire and earth, as well as the eight trigrams of the Book of Change. The art of fortune telling is a metaphysical art with mythical and magical character. Its methods are seldom discussed openly. To practitioners, this is a "heaven’s secret" and its ways must not be disclosed. The tradition is disclosed strictly to disciples who are selected carefully based on their innate understanding into the nature of things.
KUNG SHI, Calligrapher Kung Shi first began studying painting with Sun Man Bein, a master painter in Guangzhou, at the age of fifteen towards the end of the Cultural Revolution. Shi’s older brother was an art student and a friend of Sun Man Bein when he introduced him. Shi brought his paintings to Sun’s home where Sun would critique his work and demonstrate brush strokes for Shi to go home and emulate. Sun Man Bein was able to show his young student works of other painters and calligraphers from his collection of books and encouraged him to study more such art albums. Kung Shi continued as his student for more than eight years, before he emigrated to New York City in 1979. His style of painting is based on a style from Shanghai, emphasizing brushwork, quite distinct from the Lingnan style prevalent in Guangzhou at the time that was concerned with subject matter and the question of light coming from the West through Japan. He continues to study calligraphy and teach his students with the same kind of individual attention he received from his master.
KAVITA VYAS, Mehandi artist Mehandi, the art of painting designs on the skin of hands and feet, began over 100 years ago in India by the Muslims, mostly in Pakistan. It is also widely done by Arab peoples. This art form came about as a result of women whose hands are the only parts of their bodies visible. Kavita Vyas learned Mehandi from the master Mrs. Saroj Oza, who created the cone method. She taught Mehandi in India before coming to New York in 1996 for treatment of her polio condition. Kavita and her Mehandi art were covered on the 10 O’clock News on Channel 11 in 1996. Kavita also does fabric painting, clay pot painting and cosmetics for brides.
YE XUN, Dough figurine master artist Dough modeling is a traditional Chinese handicraft that has continued to develop for over 700 years. Mr. Ye Xun, born in Zhejiang, has combined the qualities of both his master teachers, the poetic sensibility of Master Zhao Kou Ming with the realistic representation of color and manner of Master Lang Shao An (his grandfather). His figures appear life-like with a sense of vitality in the scenes and characters of his work. His work include the famous mythological characters such as the Monkey King from "Journey to the West", the Eight Immortals and the Goddess of Mercy. He has also won numerous awards for his designs including First Place in the Zhejiang Provincial Competition for Best Design.
Jampa Youden, TIBETAN JEWELRY DESIGNER AND FOLK SINGER Jampa Youden grew up in one of the many nomadic communities in Tibet, where the land is vast (larger than Texas and California together), streams are crystal clear, where there are herds of sheep, birds, meadows of fragrant flowers and medicinal plants, surrounded by snow capped mountains. He learned to sing from his grandfather. The songs are of nomadic life since 70% of the Tibetan population is nomadic. From a family of singers, he and his brothers are often invited to sing at special occasions, weddings and parties. At age thirty he escaped with family members to Nepal before coming to the United States.. He thinks singing is like medicine. He says, "It is free to be happy." He tells of the Tibetan proverb, "When you are happy, you enjoy wine. When you are sad, you must tame your mind." He has also taught himself jewelry design. Taking his cue from traditional works he has brought this kind of design back in new materials, sizes and forms, sometimes using beads from Arizona.

CHILDREN’S FAIR PROGRAM THIS PROGRAM IS MADE POSSIBLE BY GOLDMAN, SACHS & CO. WITH THE COOPERATION OF THE COALITION FOR ASIAN AMERICAN CHILDREN AND FAMILIES CACF’s Action Council teams up once again with volunteers from Goldman Sachs in presenting this year’s Children’s Fair for CAPA’s Asian Pacific American Heritage Festival. As part of this ‘Passport through Asia’, you will get the opportunity to design and create many arts and crafts from regions around Asia. Some of our ideas are cultural icons that you probably would recognize quickly. We’ve brought back huge favorites and have included new ones as well. And if that isn’t enough, get your face-painted and say hello to our clowns. Enjoy! [Japan
- Fish Kites]
In Japan, kids enjoy a special celebration each year on May 5th. It's called Children's Day. During the day, children fly kites, wear traditional clothing including a kimono, and eat tasty rice cakes wrapped in bamboo leaves. Families hang colorful kites and streamers from bamboo poles outside their homes. Run with the wind and see them take off.
[Thailand – Elephant Trekking] Elephants have been revered in Thailand for many centuries. Famous as the strongest beasts of burden, in Thailand they were important in battle with kings mounted on Elephants and have been noted for their intelligence, memory and pleasant nature. The massive body symbolizes strength and peace. Come design your very own elephant in your choice of one of many scenic habitats.
[Korea – Doll Making] These dolls showcase different traditional costumes- the most striking is without a doubt the hanbok, worn by Koreans of all ages, particularly on traditional holidays and when attending social affairs with a traditional Korean theme. The hanbok is characterized by its simple lines and the fact that it has no pockets. With its roots stretching back many centuries, it will continue to grace the streets of Korea for many years to come.
[Philippines – The Jeepney: King of the Road] What do you do when you can’t find a taxi nor bus? A symbol of Filipino ingenuity, creativity, festivity… step onto any Manila street and you immediately witness the effects of the reign of this ‘King of the Road.’ While adorned with many colors and designs these steel works of art can carry 6 – 18 people and provide shade to all its guests. Join us as we create miniature models.
[China – Dragon Streamers] Usually depicted as a long, snake-like creature with numerous claws, the Chinese dragon has long been a potent symbol of auspicious power in Chinese folklore and art. This activity incorporates the design of a dragon head similar to that seen in a traditional Dragon dance- spawned from great respect for this creature. This important icon of Chinese culture and tradition has spread throughout the world. It symbolizes the bringing of good luck and prosperity in the year to come for all the human beings on earth. In this activity, we will design color-streamer dragon heads.
[Pakistan – Carpet Gallery] The town of Lahore, also known as the Heart of Pakistan and it’s second largest city is known for their famous carpet-makers using popular motifs such as medallions, paisleys, traceries, and geometric designs. Beautiful hand-knotted carpets are tremendous export of this South Asia country. In this activity, join us as we design our own rugs.
[Nepal – Butterfly Zone] Although it is a tiny country resting on the border between China and India, its environment is very unique. While serving as home to several hundred species of orchids, did you know that the beautiful country of Nepal is the home to over 500 species of butterflies? Show off your creativity and design your very own.
