Help your child understand that money matters

Great Grades reminder We’ve changed our Great Grades Program effective for this school year to make it more convenient for families. Please note: deposits will not be made for quarterly or trimester grades as they have in the past. Youth members in K-12 will receive $30 deposited into their account when they bring in their final report card at the end of the school year. Teaching children the importance of saving helps build a solid financial foundation. At CAP COM, you can open a Savings Account for your child as soon as you have the child’s Social Security Number. Along with learning how to save, kids can earn money for their Great Grades and with our Reading Programs. Our School Banking Program partners with more than 70 schools to promote financial literacy. Kids at participating schools can make deposits during school hours. Here are some tips to help you get your child started on the right path. Start early. As soon as your child starts counting, familiarize them with money. Since kids tend to learn by repetition, ensure they see you handle money repeatedly, whether counting it, putting coins into a jar or piggy bank, or even by introducing games that involve money. Set goals. Having a clear idea of what they’re saving for will help your child actually want to put their money into a piggy bank or Savings Account. Opening a CertifiKID is a great
way to help kids save money for long term goals. Set up direct deposit and teach them how savings can grow when you make regular, small deposits during the year. Communicate. Be upfront with your kids, teaching them the difference between needs and wants. Also, explain to them the importance of saving money, investing and spending their money wisely. Give an allowance. Once your children are old enough, start giving them an allowance for chores and other things they do around the house. Also teach them to save a part of their allowance for their piggy bank or savings account and allow them to spend what’s left on their goal (a book, toy, etc.). Manage their savings account. Bring them to CAP COM and help them do their banking. Keeping a record of the money they save will motivate them to keep saving and hopefully will give them a solid foundation for later in life. Scholarship: Are you studying Computer Technology? Starting college can be an exciting time. And, as you’re probably struggling with how you will pay for your education, it can be a little bit stressful, too. It’s no surprise to CAP COM College Bound Specialists Kim Donah and Ryan Chenot who meet regularly with families in various stages of their college bound journey. CAP COM’s College Bound Program is a unique service that helps families plan how to pay for college. We can help you navigate this difficult process. And, our free workshop series provides even more critical information for parents and students. We start the year with our FAFSA Workshop at the Albany Marriott on Wolf Road, January 13 (see box below). Parents will receive tips on filling out these mandatory forms. Here are just a few things to think about as you prepare: • To apply for federal aid, you must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. The deadlines vary by college, so apply early. • You will need to determine if you qualify to apply as a dependent or as part of a family unit. The FAFSA instructions will help you determine which is appropriate for your scenario.
• When filling out the FAFSA, you will need all financial information, including income, tax returns and investments, for yourself and your family (if you’re applying as part of a family unit). • As part of the FAFSA, you will choose up to 10 colleges to receive your application results. • A few weeks after completing the FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) in the mail and results from the colleges you selected. The SAR will tell you what kind of aid you can receive and how much. • Start researching scholarships so you aren’t relying on loans to pay your tuition. Once you’ve explored all scholarship and financial aid options, students may sometimes have a “gap” in their funding and how much they need to cover their expenses. Weigh in
Start by being honest about where your finances are right now. Make a list of all your debts and sources of income. When you know where you stand you can set better goals for the future.
Get organized
Organization is the key to making sure your bills get paid on time. Bill Pay can make it even quicker. You tell us what to pay, we send the check. Set up reminders so that you never miss a payment. You can even pay your bills using our mobile app.
Make saving a priority
Even if you start small, start somewhere. If you save $5 a week for four years, you’ll have just over $1,000. Consider a 52-week plan where you save $1 the first week, $2 the second, and so on. At the end of a year, you’ll have saved almost $1,400. Think about your savings as another bill; it’s just as important as your mortgage, car payment and utility bills. Set up a Club Account with direct deposit and save the money before you even have the chance to spend it. In fact, set up more than one Club Account! You can name the accounts whatever you want – Vacation Club, Money for College, Grocery Cash, Concert Fund, VISA Payment, Tax Money – as long as it motivates you to keep saving! Make your savings work harder for you. If you are saving for a long-term goal, consider a Savings Certificate and earn higher dividends on the money you set aside. Apply online or call us today!
Be prepared
Unexpected expenses happen – but with an emergency fund, you’ll be ready. Before you attempt to pay off any debt, set up an emergency Savings Account. A Money Market is also a good choice for an emergency fund. It will earn higher dividends and you can make limited withdrawals from it.* Most important, make sure you don’t spend it unless it truly is an emergency.
Take control of your debt
As 2014 draws to a close, you are probably already considering a few new resolutions for the year ahead. If getting control of your finances is one of those, we can help. We can provide you with the resources you need to make this next year your most financially fit year yet.

A year of hope As the holidays draw to a close, we are proud of all this credit union family has done to nurture our community. We supported the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart program, financial literacy and a new internship program at Proctors Theatre. We gave money for scholarships, for higher education facilities and to help area seniors remain independent in their homes. A gift to the St. Peter’s Health Partners capital campaign will help support the alignment of health care resources in Troy and we stood with the American Cancer Society once again this year as a flagship sponsor at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. On behalf of the CAP COM Cares Foundation, thank you for helping us make a difference. “Partnerships are the heartbeat of a better community,” said President/CEO Paula Stopera. “We are grateful for

the generous support of our members, staff and volunteers.” We sold out of Fall BIG Benefit Raffle tickets, raising more than $65,000 to fund our holiday giving efforts. With the help of our program partner, B. Lodges in Albany, we gave more coats this year than ever before. More than 250 children received a coat to keep them warm this winter. Coats were delivered to the Commission on Economic Opportunity’s (CEO) Head Start Program and Early Head Start Program in Troy. School banking partner schools received 80 of the nearly 300 Thanksgiving meals donated to families in our area. In partnership with Hannaford Supermarkets and Verizon Wireless, CAP COM filled each basket with all the ingredients for a healthy, traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Foundation volunteers delivered baskets to local
organizations including St. Catherine’s Center for Children, Commission on Economic Opportunity, Visiting Nurses Association, Marillac Family Shelter, Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County, St. Paul Center for Women and Children, Watervliet Head Start and to underprivileged families in the City of Cohoes. Santa surprised children at CEO and Marillac Family Shelter, helping to keep the spirit of the season alive. The Foundation delivered decorations and groceries to families at the
shelter to help them continue to honor their holiday traditions, even during difficult times. Toy collection bins in all of our branches helped support Albany PAL’s Pitch in for PAL Holiday Toy Drive, which provides more than 2,500 toys to children during the holidays each year. We are getting ready for another year of wonderful memories. Elections1 for three open seats on the Credit Union Board of Directors will be held at the meeting. The Nominating Committee has nominated three candidates for the three-year terms.
A Credit Union member since 1965, Harold Horning was the Credit Union CEO from 1984 to 1995. He’s been a Credit Union volunteer for more than 40 years and has been on the Board of Directors since 1974, serving as Chairman from 1997 until 2000. He has served on the CAP COM Financial Services Board of Managers and many other volunteer committees. Harold retired from NYNEX in 1984 after 31 years of employment and is an active member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, the NYNEX Alumni Council and is involved in various golf and bowling leagues.
Patricia Walbroehl has been a member since 1967 and on the Credit Union Board since 1978. She served on the Executive Committee and also as Board Secretary. She has served as a member of the CAP COM Financial Services Board of Managers, the New York Credit Union Association’s “Capital District Council,” the Credit Union Foundation Steering Committee and numerous other committees. A graduate of the Junior College of Albany and Russell Sage College, Patricia is retired from both Bell Atlantic and New York State. Currently, she oversees 67 homes as Board President within The Homestead Association.
Patrick Kelly has been a member of CAP COM since 1975 and a Credit Union volunteer for over 20 years. A member of CAP COM’s Board of Directors since 1992, Patrick is currently the board’s First Vice Chairman and is Chairman of the Board of Managers for the CAP COM Group. Patrick has chaired and served on several other volunteer committees. He is currently a manager at Verizon and enjoys spending his free time with family and friends.

Are you entering your 50s, but behind in your retirement planning goals? Don’t fret. There is still time to get your financial plan back on track. There are many steps that older investors can take to better prepare themselves financially for retirement. Here are six tips that may help you make the most of your final working years. Catch up. If you have access to a 401(k) or other workplace-sponsored plan, make the $6,000 catchup contribution that is available to participants aged 50 and older. Note that you are first required to contribute the annual employee maximum before making the catch-up contribution. Fund an IRA. Investors aged 50 and older can contribute $6,500 annually (the $5,500 annual contribution plus an additional catch-up contribution of $1,000). An investor in his or her 50s who contributes the maximum amounts to both a 401(k) and an IRA could accelerate retirement savings by more than $25,000 a year. Consider dividends. If you do not have access to a workplace-sponsored retirement plan, or you already contribute the maximum to your qualified retirement accounts, consider stocks that offer dividend reinvestment.1 Reinvesting your dividends may help to grow your account balance over time. Make little cuts. Consider how you can trim expenses while continuing to enjoy life. Some suggestions for quick savings: Eliminate or reduce premium cable channels that you do not watch, memberships that you do not use regularly, and frequent splurges on dining out or coffee runs. An extra $100 a month saved today could make a big difference down the road. Review strategies for postponing retirement. You may be able to learn new skills that could increase your marketability to potential employers. Even a part-time job could reduce your need to deplete retirement assets.

Social media has made the world smaller and helped bring people closer together. At the same time, it’s also exposed us to some new dangers. Here are some steps you can take to protect your personal information. • Don’t install any social media application that can make posts to your feed, access your account information, or see your friends list. That way, your name won’t be the reason someone else clicks a malicious link. • Don’t enter your credit card information on any service if you don’t intend to buy something. This will keep you safe from scams and help cut down on impulse purchases. • Review your privacy settings periodically and choose restrictive settings – make sure you know who can see your information online. • Don’t put personal information in your profile, such as date of birth, place of employment, address and phone number. • If you receive a request for money through email or social media, follow up through another means such as by phone or in person. Confirm the person is in need; then send money via a service you trust. • Change your social media passwords every six months, at least. Use complex passwords that don’t contain profile information.
