TO THE SOUTHERN GREAT BARRIER REEF

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is one of the world’s most iconic destinations for travellers. It is 2,300 kilometres long and approximately 344,400 square kilometres in size – which is about 70 million football fields, or the size of Japan. Given it size, there are still parts of the reef where visitors can feel like intrepid explorers, as if they were discovering places no one else has ever seen.

The Southern Great Barrier Reef offers visitors the chance to see large hard coral reefs firsthand and join colourful fish and big marine life like turtles and manta rays for a snorkel. At just over 4 hours drive from Brisbane, this unique region can easily be included as part of a larger itinerary and the snorkelling is within easy reach, right off the beach.

ACCESSIBILITY The Southern Great Barrier Reef starts only a short 4 hour drive or a 45 minute flight from Brisbane. You can reach the reef on a short day trip, or alternatively you can stay on an island of the Southern Great Barrier Reef, where the reef can be accessed straight from the beach on Lady Elliot, Heron, Wilson, Great Keppel and Pumpkin Islands.

GIANT MARINE LIFE Due to cooler waters in the Southern Great Barrier Reef there are slightly different types of coral to other parts of Great Barrier Reef, and an abundance of plankton which support GIANT marine life, like turtles and manta rays. A once-a-year phenomenon when corals reproduce. The timing is linked to the lunar cycle and water temperatures. Divers say it looks like an underwater snowstorm.

See turtles laying their eggs and hatching on many of our beaches and islands. Ranger-guided tours are available at Mon Repos beach near Bargara (Nov-Mar), and many of our islands offer guided turtle encounters.

Home to 80% of Australia’s breeding population of bent-wing bats, see the emergent flight of thosands of these tiny creatures from a cave at dusk on a ranger-guided tour near Rockhampton.

Our waters are abundant with seasonal migrating humpback whales. Whale watching tours depart from Bundaberg, Town of 1770 and Yeppoon, and you can spot whales from many of our islands and beaches when in season.

DESTINATION ECO CERTIFICATION

The globally recognised ECO Destination Certification process through Ecotourism Australia is complex and recognises the efforts of the tourism industry, local government and the entire community towards all aspects of regional sustainability.

The Bundaberg Region was the second destination in Queensland and fifth in Australia to achieve the prestigious credential in January 2023. Following independent assessment across 91 criteria, the region achieved the certification at the Ecotourism level which is defined as a “nature-based tourism destination with a strong commitment to ecotourism principles. This involves cultural and natural interpretation and education for visitors, and local business engagement in sustainability”.

Gladstone and the Capricorn Coast are on track to achieve ECO Destination Certification mid way through 2024.

DAY 1 - BUNDABERG & MON REPOS

Foodies, you have come to the right place! Bundaberg’s rich red volcanic soil, abundant rivers and surrounding seas are the source of never ending seasonal produce. Whether you arrive via the sweeping streets of hinterland towns Childers and Gin Gin or fly into the heart of Bundaberg, you will be greeted by our rich patchwork of green farmlands and agricultural abundance.

Enjoy the cafe culture in our historical buildings and explore the exploding artisan food and drinks industry in the corner butcheries and bakeries, breweries and distilleries, and the farmer-led markets.

From November to March, witness a miracle at the Mon Repos Turtle Encounter, a unique rangerguided turtle experience where you will see endangered Loggerhead mumma turtles nesting or baby turtles hatching. Book early!

DAY 2 - BUNDABERG

Spend your morning on the beaches of our coastline. From the family friendly Kellys Beach with a man-made swimming lagoon and patrolled section, to the white sands of Elliott Heads, a kite-surfer’s delight, to the miles-long expanses of Woodgate Beach in the south or the untouched sands of Moore Park Beach, there is something for everyone.

Spend some time in the village of Bargara, just 15 minutes from Bundaberg, before you wind your way home via the criss-cross grids and rows of seasonal produce and road-side market stalls.

The small village of Byfield is a haven for craft and nature lovers, especially the world-class potter’s gallery known as Nob Creek Pottery.

One of Australia’s best-kept island secrets is 14 kilometres off the coast from Yeppoon. Expect to see dolphins, turtles and whales in season. Fish the rich waters, snorkel or experience the coral reefs from a glass bottom kayak or simply wander the secluded beaches. Perfect for safe swimming and snorkelling most of the year round.

From Yeppoon visit the Southern Great Barrier Reef’s closest island to the mainland - Great Keppel Island. Bundaberg is rich with year-round fresh produce and iconic drinks. Enjoy a visit to the famous Bundaberg Rum Distillery or The Bundaberg Brewed Drinks Barrel, or meet the artisan producers on a guided cellar door tour.

Explore the red dirt roads to purchase direct from local farmers at the roadside stalls, or go behind the farm gates at Macadamias Australia on their Orchard Tour. Choose from the ever-changing local cafe menus and creative dishes as chefs showcase the best and freshest produce the region has-to offer. You are guaranteed to go home with a full tummy when you visit Australia’s Tastiest food bowl.

Bargara is a 13 kilometre drive through lush sugarcane fields from Bundaberg. It is a popular seaside area which harbours a peaceful and relaxed community ideal for family holidays. Roam secluded beaches or snorkel coral straight off the coast at Barolin Rocks.

Boasting open surf beaches and still water swimming areas, Bargara is also home to the largest turtle rookery in Australia on Mon Repos Beach, where you can join a ranger-led tour to see these magnificent creatures nest and hatch (Nov – March).
