FROM THE EDITOR

What an exciting place to be. Cape Town – South Africa’s oldest CBD – is also, in many ways, its youngest at heart, with every kind of amenity, place of interest and cultural venue that you could hope to find in a city. Around 20 years ago, the Cape Town Central City was a place that moved strictly to a 9-to-5 rhythm. It emptied out at the end of each working day, and at weekends it was a lonely, no-go zone. That’s all dramatically changed, largely because of the commitment and drive of the Cape Town CCID and the City of Cape Town, backed by the support of retailers, gallery owners, restaurateurs and others. Working on the premise of ‘Build it and they will come’, they teamed up to create a downtown that was safer and irresistibly inviting. And, sure enough, the people came! There’s a whole new, enthusiastic influx of visitors – local and international – who come, work, play and stay. Weekly, monthly, seasonal and annual events, from the sociable buzz of First Thursdays to the inspiring Cape Town Fringe, Infecting the City and Cape Town International Jazz Festival. It’s become the most dynamic, forward-looking and cosmopolitan CBD of any in South Africa. Take a look inside this booklet and you’ll see why we love it.

WELCOME TO THE

CAPE TOWN CENTRAL CITY VISIT | SHOP | EAT | PLAY | STAY

This guide to just some of what our downtown has to offer, is brought to you by the Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID). We’re a non-profit organisation that operates within a very specific geographic area (see the map of our boundaries on pg 62) and we ensure that our CBD is SAFE | CLEAN | CARING | OPEN FOR BUSINESS. We are here to ensure that your experience of the Central City is the best it can be, and to do this we provide top-up services to those of our primary partners at the City of Cape Town and the South African Police Service (SAPS). We operate across four departments, namely, Safety & Security, Urban Management, Social Development and Communications.

You’ll see our CCID presence clearly throughout the CBD, from the branded black and green uniforms of our 230 public safety officers, our teams of professional cleaners in yellow overalls and the members of our Straatwerk work opportunity programmes involved in everything from graffiti removal to road and pavement maintenance. For more information on the work we do, please visit our website capetownccid.org where you will also find hundreds more venues to explore. Or catch us on Facebook (facebook. com/CapeTownCCID and facebook. com/CityViewsCapeTown) as well as on Twitter (@CapeTownCCID) and Instagram (instragram.com/CapeTownCCID).

TIPS FOR MAKING YOUR CENTRAL CITY EXPERIENCE MORE ENJOYABLE Just as you would in any busy downtown anywhere, be sensible and be aware: LONG BREE

ON THE STREET

Don’t walk in deserted or dark areas, and plan your route beforehand. Keep belongings close and avoid the obvious visibility of valuables and cash. Don’t use your cellphone while walking. Keep it safely tucked away. Using headphones may distract you from what’s happening around you. Tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to return.

IN YOUR CAR

Ensure your parked car is properly locked, or you could fall victim to “remote jamming” devices. Park in well-lit areas, and keep your valuables out of sight (even when driving). Keep a distance between your car and the one in front so you can change lanes if you need to drive away quickly. Don’t give lifts to strangers and beware of begging at intersections. Rather GIVE RESPONSIBLY (see right).

Our CCID Public Safety Officers are on duty 24/7 throughout our area and you can always get hold of us anywhere within the Cape Town CBD by calling the CCID 24-hour HOTLINE SECURITY NUMBER:

HOTEL SAFETY

Place your valuables/ passport in a hotel safe. Never leave your personal property unattended. Close and lock your door when you are in your room. Don’t open the door without first checking who’s there. Use registered, qualified tour guides.

OUT & ABOUT

Don’t leave handbags or cases under tables, on the backs of chairs or on restroom hooks. Don’t leave cellphones or wallets on tables, or your drink unattended. Keep your credit card in sight at all times. Use ATMs in well-lit and safe places, be alert of others around you and never be distracted by strangers who want to ‘help’.

Do you want to GIVE RESPONSIBLY while you’re in the CCID? Donate R10 to our NGO partners by SMSing “Give” to 38088, or donate any amount of your choice by downloading the free SnapScan app onto your smartphone and scanning the code seen here. For more info on our NGO partners, visit giveresponsibly.co.za

THE COMPANY’S GARDEN

The Company’s Garden

19 Queen Victoria Street P10 These gardens, established by the Dutch East India Company in 1652 as a fruit and veg patch to supply passing ships, are an oasis of greenery. Buy a bag of nuts to feed the squirrels and wander the tree-lined walkways among statues, memorials and museums.

MUSEUMS

District Six Museum 25A Buitenkant Street, 021 466 7200, Districtsix.co.za P32 The residents of the area between the Central City and Woodstock, known as District Six, were forcibly removed and the homes flattened under the Group Areas Act, an apartheid law that forbade interracial neighbourhoods. The museum evokes the old suburb, its atmosphere, culture and characters – most of whom were relocated to the Cape Flats.

Iziko Museums

Iziko Planetarium 25 Queen Victoria Street, 021 481 3900, Iziko.org.za P10 At the planetarium, the so-called Minolta star machine and multiple projectors beam onto the domed ceiling, creating the dreamy feeling of gazing upwards from a campfire. Shows for teens and adults take place daily, while Davy Dragon entertains five- to 10-year-old astronomers at weekends. A recent refurb has made a visit here a super-hi-tech experience.

Run by Prins & Prins jewellers, this museum tells the story of a ‘girl’s best friend’, from when diamonds began forming three billion years ago onwards. Exhibits cover notable South African finds, including the Cullinan Diamond.

South African Jewish Museum 88 Hatfield Street, 021 465 1546, Sajewishmuseum.co.za, Holocaust.org.za P10 South Africa’s Jewish community has long been at the forefront of the country’s intellectual and cultural life, and includes renowned figures such as novelist Nadine Gordimer, politician Helen Suzman and painter Irma Stern. The Isaac Kaplan netsuke (Japanese miniatures) collection is one of the world’s largest privately held collections – and one of the most impressive. Africa’s first Holocaust Centre, housed in the same complex, recalls one of the darkest episodes of the 20th century. The museum-cum-memorial mixes interpretive panels and archival photos with recreated environments and multimedia displays. Age 16 and over only.

Die Groote Kerk Adderley Street, 021 422 0569, Grootekerk.org.za P11 This venerable old church with its beautiful interior was the first Christian place of worship erected at the Cape, soon after the Dutch arrived in 1652. Its cornerstone was laid in 1700 and it remains the mothership of the Dutch Reformed Church in Cape Town.

Evangelical Lutheran Church 98 Strand Street, 021 421 5854, Lutheranchurch.org.za P3 Dating back to 1774, this is South Africa’s oldest church in permanent service and forms part of the country’s oldest city block. Look out for the carvings inside by German sculptor Anton Anreith, whose work is regarded as the pinnacle of the Cape Baroque style.

NICHOLAS SPAGNOLETTI founder and co-owner of Alexander Bar, Café & Theatre I’m always curious about what’s happening elsewhere, so I often take a walk up Bree, Loop or Long and go to different places for lunch or coffee. My current favourites include Olami, 61+Ate and Obi. I generally prefer the directness of small theatre, where there’s nowhere to hide. But for a spectacle,

there’s nowhere better than the Artscape Opera House. And The Fugard is just fantastic – I’ve seen some of the best theatre I’ve seen in the whole world there. I think international visitors have always been trying to explore town, it’s just that now there’s more for them to find! The big change is that locals are spending

more time in the CBD at night. Places like The Village Idiot have made an entire crowd who previously would have partied in Claremont come to town. I would like to see a much larger portion of buildings being used for affordable housing.

BRIAN OXLEY Presenter: Magic 828 radio The best part about Cape Town is the cosmopolitan atmosphere; the energy of the oceans and the city combined – you can literally feel the buzz in your soul. The theatres are incredible, from The Fugard, where

everything from The Rocky Horror Show to real-life drama is staged, to the fabulous productions of Artscape. My wife is an artist, so I really appreciate the myriad galleries in the CBD too.

In the CBD of the future, I’d love to see a circular raised monorail system, similar to the one in Sydney, Australia, which is a tourist attraction plus a useful transport facility. It’s a practical and fun solution to moving people around, plus you get to see some great architecture up close.

IN THE Here’s our guide to helping you make the most of your visit to the Cape Town Central City in comfort and safety.

CENTRAL

CITY

GETTING AROUND One of the great things about the Cape Town Central City is how easy it is to get around on foot. Within just under two square kilometres, you’ll find just about everything that you could want in a vibrant downtown – major museums, plenty of eateries, exciting art galleries, stores, bars and theatres. For general info, call the City of Cape Town’s Transport Information Centre (TIC), 24/7 on 0800 65 64 63. A great way to get about is by bicycle: Cape Town Cycle Hire (021 434 1270, Capetowncyclehire.co.za) and Bike and Saddle (Bikeandsaddle.com 021 813 6433). Or hire a motorbike or scooter at Cape Bike Rentals (186 Bree Street, 021 426 5851). The MyCiTi buses have revolutionised transport in Cape Town. They’re clean, reliable and easy to access. Note: you can’t buy a ticket on board – it’s a no-cash system – so you do need to get a travel card in advance from major stations and selected convenience stores (Myciti.org.za). The CitySightseeing hop-on-hop-off buses are a great way to explore the city (Citysightseeing.co.za).

Minibus taxis are everywhere but they’re not everyone’s choice. There are numerous metered sedan taxi companies; Rikkis (Rikkis.co.za) offers shuttle, sharecab and door-to-door services; Excite Taxis (021 448 4444) are another option; and the popular international brand Uber (Uber.com) is well established here. If you’d like to take a train on Metrorail (021 449 6478, Metrorail.co.za) from the Cape Town Railway Station in Adderley Street, do travel during peak times and in first class, and don’t take any valuables. Report any incidents to the Railway Police (021 443 4327).

SECURITY The CCID has a large contingent of uniformed public safety officers who patrol the Central City. The 24-hour number is 082 415 7127. CCTV, monitored parking marshals and these guards have greatly improved security in the Central City. EXPLORING THE CITY MyCiTi, Cape Town’s scheduled, reliable bus service is the perfect way to explore the heart of the city without worrying about traffic and finding somewhere to park. Get your myconnect card Every passenger aged 4 years and over needs their own card. Get yours from a MyCiTi station kiosk for R30. There are three in the city centre – Thibault Square, Adderley Street and Civic Centre.

Load money for travel You can choose to load money as Standard, and use it for small purchases at retailers, or save 30% by loading Mover points. You also save more by avoiding the busy peak periods on weekdays when higher fares are charged.

Tap in and out Fares are charged according to the distance you travel. Tap in at a station entrance or on a bus and again when you leave the bus at a stop or exit via a station. The correct fare will be automatically deducted.

Need help? Call our 24-hour Transport Information Centre on 0800 65 64 63 for assistance with routes, schedules and fares, and connections to other public transport modes.
