Excerpts Glenelly has to be one of the nicest tasting experiences we have ever had and we have been doing this for a while now. Our host, Crescenda, was the most knowledgeable tasting room assistant we have ever had the pleasure to meet. She was pleasant, polite, passionate, entertaining, well presented, well spoken, just plain amazing. L’Ormarins: a magnificent host, and gave us what was tantamount to a proper yet fun lecture on wine and the producer. There was not a single question any of us winos could ask her that she did not have a good, well thought out answer for.

Seidelberg: We then ventured into a territory which was unfamiliar to our hostess and not in her script, you could see the stress lines appear on her face. Eventually, after having to excavate the recesses of her general knowledge on the farm, we discovered that it offers visitors the chance to partake in glass-blowing (if you missed it on your way in), they have the oldest guesthouse (4-star) located on the property and if you pre-book, you could get an exclusive cellar tour in German with Mr Seidel himself. Now that’s how you tickle interest.

Backsberg: As an entrant in the category for “Sustainable Wine Tourism Practices”, Backsberg would definitely get my vote – whilst they may not be completely on the organic/biodynamic bandwagon they definitely lead the pack when it comes to sustainable practices in this country.

Thank you so much again for giving me the opportunity to participate in a small way, in the important work you are doing. Apart from the real pleasure of spending a wonderful day in the winelands with interesting people, I am really grateful for the insight I have gained into the concept of GWC. It is really an inspiring way of sharing ideas for the development of wine tourism world wide. More than this, to demand and strive for excellence in what we do to showcase South African Wines, and everything that compliments and enhances this important industry. Being part of the Great Wine Capitals Bloggers tour for the second year in a row made me realise just how much I love visiting the beautiful establishments the South African winelands have to offer. Being part of this initiative taught me a whole bunch of things. Firstly, there’s more to an tasting experience than meets the eye. Secondly, the wineries in South Africa are putting in a lot of time, effort and money to sustain good practices and provide visitors with the best experiences imaginable. For this I salute them and thank them for allowing us to experience life’s little pleasures on their doorsteps. Winetimes

Words can not describe the magnificent food of Chef Richard Carstens. Richard has been labeled by many as South Africa’s “molecular” chef and rightfully so. Our lunch at Tokara was out of this world and one that we will remember for many months to come. The service was excellent and the wine list offered something for everyone’s palate and pocket. The dishes are not overly expensive and offer impeccable value for money. Best restaurant in the winelands currently? Absolutely. Best in South Africa? Quite possibly. SpitorSwallow (visited 322 wineries in SA- 68% of SA's wine farms).

We had a fabulous day, travelling from one wine farm to the next and we were blown away by nearly all of the farms. If this is the state of South African wine farms, we will have no trouble producing another overall winner like Steenberg Estate did last year. Batonage
