WELCOME TO OUR WORLD Information on Cape Vincent is as close as your browser. Click on www.capevincent.org and you’ll get information on places to shop, restaurants, places to stay, village services, marinas and lots of photos. If you have questions, email thecape@tds.net and we will get right back to you.

Check us out on facebook. WATCHING THE BIG SHIPS Ship-watching is another attraction for visitors. On most days one can see giant lakers and ocean-going vessels making their way into or out of the Great Lakes. And between them you’ll likely see Horne’s Ferry. Cape Vincent is an official port of entry from early May to mid October. The only auto/passenger ferry across the St. Lawrence River departs from the ferry dock almost hourly. The ferry connects Cape Vincent with Wolfe Island, Ontario, Canada. A short drive across the island connects visitors with another ferry to the historic city of Kingston. Visitors should ensure they have the correct government issued identity documents when planning to visit Canada or the United States. And this includes children. Visitors can enjoy great boating on the St. Lawrence and through the 1000 Islands. Many boaters are completely unaware that scores of historic wrecks of ships have their last resting place on the bed of the St. Lawrence. Underwater diving is taught in Cape Vincent and scuba divers preparing to explore the clear waters can often be seen at the riverside park at the east end of the village.

A PLACE FOR ARTISTS The almost 200 year-old Tibbetts Point Lighthouse is a “must see” for visitors and some 10,000 people each year enjoy wandering the grounds, viewing distant islands and ships through the telescope or browsing through items in the Visitor’s Center, Museum and Gift Shop. The former Light Keeper’s Quarters are now the home of Hostelling International and during summer months people from all over the world can be seen staying there. Tibbetts Lighthouse, the stone houses in the village and the many scenic waterscapes make great subjects for artists, photographers and plain sight-seeing. Right in the center of the village overlooking the river is The Breakwater Gallery where visitors can attend classes or view the many paintings and photographs on display. If you take a great photo, send it in to the Cape Vincent Chamber of Commerce’s annual photo contest. Fine eating establishments for all tastes can be found in and around Cape Vincent. Motels, B&Bs and Cottages most with great scenic views are located on the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario. Many of these units are equipped with housekeeping facilities. Two New York State Parks are located on the river a short distance from the village and offer spectacular sights. A late season event is the Cape Vincent Oktoberfest. The event draws hundreds of visitors from far and wide to be entertained by the Bavarian Band, traditional dancers and singers. Of course there are steins, beers and wines from local vineyards, plus bratwursts, lots of good food plus vendors.

Cape VinCent “Where Lake & River Meet” by Rev. Robert D. Egby

CAPE VINCENT: JEWEL OF THE THOUSAND ISLANDS Cape Vincent is great for fishing, hunting, camping, cruising, water sports including scuba diving, hiking and ATV, history and sightseeing. It’s also a great place for artists so bring easels, oils and pastels and cameras too! If you look at the map of Lake Ontario where it flows into the great St. Lawrence River and Seaway, the village is right where the two meet. Its famous lighthouse built in 1827 stands as a sentinel over the meeting. The village in northern New York State has a strong French heritage. Napoleon Bonaparte was to have settled in Cape Vincent, seeking refuge after the wars in Europe. Army veterans and evacuees from France settled in the area and were major contributors to the growth and identity of the region. The village celebrates its history with a colorful French Festival held the 2nd Saturday in July. Thousands gather to witness spectacular entertainment and fireworks, music by visiting bands, browse the scores of crafters booths and displays, and watch the annual parades. The village and region abound in old stone buildings, a mark of the European settlers. In fact you can learn more about the village’s glorious past by visiting the Cape Vincent Historical Museum, which itself occupies an elegant stone building. The Museum’s home served as a barracks for soldiers during the War of 1812.

STAYING FOR A WHILE? Cape Vincent School is on Esselstyne Street in Cape Vincent. This elementary school is in the Thousand Islands Central School District. The Thousand Islands High School is close to Route 12E midway between Cape Vincent and Clayton. You can find out more about schools by going to www.1000islandsschools.org. Getting to Cape Vincent is a breeze. The highways are excellent. If you are coming from the south on Interstate 81 take exit 46 and follow the signs to “Cape Vincent.” If you have a GPS navigator the zip code for the Cape is 13618. If you are coming from Canada over the International Bridge, take the 12E exit for Clayton through to the Cape. If you are coming from Canada, the Kingston-Wolfe-Cape Vincent ferry drops you right in the village center.

Cape Vincent, a Witness to History Written by Dennis McCarthy, St. Lawrence Historical Foundation

Statically located on the South shore of St. Lawrence River were she meets the headwaters at Lake Ontario, Cape Vincent has been a witness to the military conflicts that defined both the United States and Canada. During the French and Indian War, armies of both the Imperial French and the British sailed by and stopped on the shores of Cape Vincent. In 1760, eleven thousand soldiers under British General Jeffery Amherst moved past and camped near Cape Vincent on their epic journey to the Battle of Isle Royal at present day Ogdensburg and their Conquest of Canada. A few years later in 1777, a British Army would camp for several weeks on Carleton Island under Col. Barry St. Ledger on their way to the Mohawk Valley and the siege at Fort Stanwix (Rome NY). The British found the town of Cape Vincent’s location to be so strategic that it built a major supply base and Fort Haldimand on Carleton Island in 1778. This military base played an important role in the supply of the western posts at Niagara and Detroit. Several ships of the line were built at the naval yard at the head of the Island. During the Revolutionary War, many raids were launched from the base on Carleton Island. Many notable and notorious people visited there including Joseph Brant the Indian chief, Walter Butler the Tory Commander and Captain George McDougall, who was an ancestor of Hillary Clinton, to name a few. From the end of the Revolution to the beginning of the War of 1812, the base at Carleton Island acted as a relocation point for British Loyalists from the Mohawk Valley including Molly Brant and many others. With the outbreak of the War of 1812, Cape Vincent became one of the most exposed locations on the US and Canadian border. It was necessary to have armed forces at Cape Vincent since the enemy had a large force nearby at Kingston, Ontario, Canada. The first combat of the War of 1812 took place in Cape Vincent in June 1812. Abner Hubbard, a Cape Vincent resident captured Fort Haldimand on Carleton Island which was still occupied by the British even though the island had been ceded to the US in 1796. On several occasions in the summer of 1813 both Americans and British soldiers and sailors came to conflict at the Village of Cape Vincent, then known as Gravelly Point. The history books tell of several attacks that took place in Cape Vincent where soldiers fought to the death. There were ship landings, stores were plundered, and barracks were burned. For a few weeks in late 1813, an American Army of 10,000 under General Wilkinson used Grenadier Island near Tibbetts Point as a staging area for an invasion of Canada. The Army rowed a flotilla of 250 whale boats down the St. Lawrence in early November. General Wilkinson briefly stopped at Cape Vincent while the American Lake Ontario Fleet under Commander Chauncey with over 1000 sailors and 10 major war ships sailed past to protect the exposed army in transit. For a week while the Army under Wilkinson moved, the Fleet stayed at anchor off the still formidable remains of Fort Haldimand on Carleton Island to prevent its being reoccupied. With the end of the War of 1812 Cape Vincent moved to a period of peaceful prosperity, growth and commerce

This venerable stone structure was used as a barracks to house soldiers during the War of 1812. Later on, the Forsythe Brothers manufactured ironwork for sailing vessels and cookstoves during its days as a foundry and machine shop. It has also served as a Town Barn and the Chamber of Commerce offices. In May of 1992, the Museum was dedicated.
