Sometimes, they even nap quietly …shhh, don’t wake them! After they wake up, they’ll be ready for an adventure!

While they sleep, they dream of all the places they want to visit in Virginia. After a wake and a shake, Bella and DJ pack their suitcases and set off! 6
They start their adventure with a bike ride around Richmond. 7
They bump their bikes along through Shockoe Bottom and buy fresh veggies from the Farmer’s Market.

Bella and DJ park their bikes and make tracks to the train station, where they buy tickets to‌ 9
Virginia Beach! DJ builds top-notch sand castles, while Bella goes treasure hunting. 11
The pups sniff out a treat in a beach bag and hop in. Before they know it, they’re boarding a plane to Winchester! 12
As soon as the plane lands, Bella and DJ head straight for the orchard! They pick apples, run between the trees and make applesauce. 13

Bella and DJ hitch a ride to Arlington. DJ begs to cross the Potomac and see the White House, but Bella wants to stay in town and shop. 15
Next, they hop in a car. Bella navigates as DJ drives through the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. 16
They arrive in Blacksburg and gear up for a game. Go Hokies! 17
After the game, Bella and DJ hike the Appalachian Trail. Ahh‌they love the fresh, clean air. 18
Whew! After all of their travels, Bella and DJ are happy to be home again. 19
After they unpack, they gobble a snack, then curl up for a nice, cozy nap. 20
ZzZzZz…while Bella and DJ snooze, they imagine their next adventure…sweet dreams, pups! 21

about the author Samantha Willis is a freelance writer and native Virginian. “The Little Adventures of Bella and DJ” is her first book. She is passionate about reading, and aims to inspire young people to express themselves through writing. She lives in Midlothian, Virginia with her husband Jamaal and two dogs, Bella and DJ.
about the illustrator Kelly Cleary drew on her experiences growing up in Virginia to illustrate this book. She combined her love of animals and the outdoors with her degree in Fine Arts from The College of William and Mary to bring to life the real Bella and DJ. This is the third published children’s book she has illustrated.
