cfutch@theadvocate.com On most days, Erin Rolfs is a smart, responsible and effective marketing professional who talks, acts and dresses the part. But on a few precious days every year during Mardi Gras season, she puts on the costume of her alter ego, Baby Ruthless Rolfs, and makes bringing the funk to the Spanish Town parade her No. 1 priority. Rolfs and Aimee â&#x20AC;&#x153;Famous Amosâ&#x20AC;? Spangenberg founded the Prancing Babycakes dance troupe in 2008 with a core group of good friends, Rolfs said. Spangenberg moved to New Orleans and is no longer an ac-

tive member, Rolfs said, but is always with them in spirit. Troupe members gathered Sunday morning for their annual dress rehearsal. Along with the camellia blooms, winter in south Louisiana brings a few species of hummingbird, and Dennis Demcheck, an amateur bird watcher who has developed expertise over the years, and Jane Patterson, president of the Baton Rouge Audubon Society, shared their knowledge with Audubon members and the general public. Demcheck spoke Jan. 30 to a group of Baton Rouge Audubon Society members about the birds that are increasingly spending winters in the Baton Rouge area at the Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center in advance of the 2015 Hummingbird Tour Saturday of four area backyards with reliable hummingbird sightings. CASA members’work for social justice honored Advocate staff report Capital Area Court Appointed Special Advocates Association was a recipient of the Martin Luther King Social Justice Award given Jan. 17 by the Xi Nu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. at its Martin Luther King Honors Breakfast at Second Baptist Church. Awards were given to individuals and organizations that advocate for the community through mentoring, education and political awareness, a news release said. Honorees were recognized for their works in diversity and service in the community. CASA recruits, trains and supervises community volunteers who advocate for abused and neglected youth living in foster care to help them reach safe, permanent homes, Jennifer Mayer said in a news release. Since the program’s inception in 1992, more than 1,000 vol-

unteers have provided a voice for more than 2,100 children in East Baton Rouge Parish. As a disproportionate number of black youth are represented in foster care, CASA’s leadership understands the importance of inclusiveness and diversity, she said. The organization promotes these values in governance, management and advocacy. CASA provides diversity awareness and cultural competency training for its volunteers, board and staff in order to provide culturally sensitive advocacy for abused children. CASA also strives to maintain diversity among its leadership and volunteer base to reflect the diversity of children served by the organization. Advocate staff report East Baton Rouge Parish residents can provide input about how to recharge and enhance public schools during the Beyond Bricks EBR programs set through Feb. 12 across the parish. The program is driven by volunteers who are seeking to capture the community’s vision for education through 13 sessions and then determine the changes needed to fulfill the vision of a topnotch public school system, a news release said. Organizers called the program a one-on-one survey to gather from residents. “We continue to see input from citizens who want us to hear their voices about public schools,” said Anna Fogle, Beyond Bricks EBR Steering Committee chairwoman. “We are excited with the response as citizens are voicing their opinions and sharing what they know and what they hope our schools can achieve. Students plant trees as part of Coastal Roots program Advocate staff report Students from St. Joseph’s Academy traveled Jan. 19 to Fontainebleau State Park to participate in coastal restoration planting with the LSU Coastal Roots Program. Having grown bald cypress and catalpa trees in their school’s yard under the guidance of LSU School of Education and School of Plant, Environmental and Soil Sciences faculty, the students transplant-

ed the seedlings to the new site to provide food and habitat for the site’s animals, as well as to provide a way to stabilize the soil there, a news release said. Native plants grown by the students in their school-based nurseries are chosen by the restoration site manager based on a particular location’s needs. The LSU Coastal Roots Program provides an active learning situation in which students can explore strategies for sustaining coastal ecosystems and

develop an attitude of stewardship toward natural resources, the release said. The program does this through conducting an on-going school-based nursery program growing native plants and involving students in a hands-on habitat restoration planting. In addition, the program provides teachers and students with information on issues such as ecological stewardship, wetlands functions and values, wetland loss, habitat restoration and

conservation, and basic geoscience and horticultural skills. “Students participating in the LSU Coastal Roots Program are learning to be stewards of our natural resources. This means both educating ourselves about critical issues so we can make good decisions for our families and taking action to nurture the environment that nurtures us,” said LSU Coastal Roots Codirector Pam Blanchard, associate professor in the College of Human Sciences and Education.

The LSU Coastal Roots Program is an initiative of the LSU College of Human Sciences and Education and the College of Agriculture, the release said. The program includes approximately 45 schools in 19 parishes throughout southern Louisiana and one school in Chile, South America. Since the plantings began in 2001, 13,092 students in second through 12th grades have transplanted 109,470 school-grown restoration plants on 266 restoration trips across

south Louisiana. “As a college in the state’s flagship university, that mission also means being good stewards of one of our most precious and valued resources — our coast. Coastal Roots is an exceptional and enduring program that is affecting real change in our state while preparing our students to be active and engaged citizens and professionals,” said Damon Andrew, dean of the College of Human Sciences and Education.

Gant family moves into new Habitat home Advocate staff report Derrick Gant and his family moved into their new Mississippi Street home in January thanks to support from Habitat for Humanity, Catholic High School and Warrick Dunn’s Home for the Holidays program. On Jan. 23, the Catholic High School community dedicated the Habitat for Humanity home built for the Gant family. Catholic High alumnus Warrick Dunn, class of 1993, partnered with CHS and Habitat for Humanity to provide the Gant family’s down payment and home furnishings. Catholic High School wrapped up the school-sponsored Habitat for Humanity build Oct. 5. The two-year process included raising money to fund the house followed by building the house with CHS students, faculty, staff, alumni and volunteers, a news release said. The Catholic High School community raised $50,000 to financially support the construction. In 2011, Catholic High School announced it would sponsor and build a Habitat for Humanity house on its own. The cost to build a Habitat house is $75,000. The Catholic High student body committed to raise $50,000 and Habitat would then pay the remaining $25,000 for the Catholic High Habitat build. For the past 11 years, Catholic High has participated in the Habitat Youth Build, along with other area highs schools, providing labor for Habitat sponsored homes. This latest endeavor is an effort to sponsor a build entirely by the Catholic High community, providing both the labor and $50,000 of the $75,000 necessary for a Habitat home. The Catholic High School community held dances, candy sales, tailgates, pep rallies, tal-

Dunn’s charity works toward assisting single parents on their quest to home ownership by providing recipients with a fully furnished home and stocked kitchen and pantry. Cut the French bread in half lengthwise. Lightly brush the bottom of the bread with a thin coat of olive oil. Lay the two pieces side by side, be sure to keep each piece separate (open faced). Spread some BBQ sauce on each piece. Top each piece with sliced ham, sliced tomato, and sliced cheese. Grill the two ham melts so that the bread is crisp and cheese is melted (usually 3-6 minutes). After grilling, slice the two melts into 1-inch slices and serve.

Continued from page 1G Demcheck’s talk centered on the behaviors and preferences of the ruby-throated hummingbirds, some of whom live yearround in the area, and other types — the rufous, buff-belly, and black chin hummingbirds — that can be sighted in winter, where some groups recover after their migration, either from South and Central America, or from farther north. The best way to spot them is to provide them with attractive food and, maybe more importantly, Demcheck said, habitat. “Joan LeBlanc’s house is one of those magic spots. I don’t know what she does, but she always seems to have a lot of birds at her feeders,” he said just after arriving at LeBlanc’s home, which was one of four stops on the hummingbird tour. “Well, I don’t know what I do, either,” LeBlanc said, though according to Demcheck, her yard shows a few great examples of what bird lovers can do to encourage the birds to stick around. She has several small feeders in many areas of her backyard, which is preferable to one large bird feeder, for a couple of reasons. “The birds are not impressed by how large your container is. They won’t be more likely to come to a bigger feeder, and the chances are better that the sugar water will go bad in a larger container,” Demcheck said. “So it makes more sense to use several three-ounce feeders and forget about the large feeders.” Also, he said, plant flowers that bloom in winter. As with other types of birds, hummingbirds prefer natural nectar that flowers provide and, more importantly, the bugs that fly around those flowers. “The nectar is only a small part of the hummingbird diet,

Friends and a big idea

If there is a birthplace, however unofficial, it is the Red Star, a bar in downtown Baton Rouge, where the core group that would become the Babycakes would hang out. Robyn Belle, aka “The Digital Crawfish,” said she remembers the early discussions, probably over cocktails, about what they wanted to do with the dance troupe. The concept was inspired by all-female marching troupes like the Pussyfooters based in New Orleans, Belle said. They wanted to start their own group, mainly because it looked like fun. So they got together, picked a song and made up a dance routine.

The value of a good costume

Dressing the part is a big part of what helps Babycakes members step out of their “normal” lives and into the role of a sassy, outrageous, crowd-pleasing entertainer. “I am not Erin Rolfs when I have this costume on,” she said. “I transform into Baby Ruthless and adopt that character,” Rolfs said. Costumes include any number of sequined, bedazzled, jeweled, glittered and feathered pieces, both staples and accessories. There is no real collaboration here, and no rules, other than make sure it’s red, white and black, and don’t forget the

They get their vitamins and minerals from insects — another great reason to attract the birds. And that’s the reason that hummingbird food with supplements is unnecessary. “I never buy it. I just use sugar water. It’s less expensive, and it doesn’t go bad as fast.” LeBlanc passes by a stunted camellia bush that she calls her Charlie Brown camellia. “It’s sad looking, but I keep it there because the hummingbirds like it,” she said. And not just for bugs and

nectar. Demcheck also pointed out that less manicured plants and bushes give the birds good places to seek shelter from predators. “Those bushes that are so well manicured they look almost like solid blocks? Birds can’t use those. They need nooks and crannies, places to hide,” he said. Demcheck said the first thing he does when he buys a bird feeder is to take off the plastic flowers covering the feeding stations. “You’ve seen those, right? Birds don’t care about those. The red color of the feeder is

enough to attract them. Those plastic flowers are meant to attract the humans buying the feeders. They don’t do a thing for the birds,” he said. In fact, they may do a lot of harm. Hummingbirds need their peripheral vision to be able to see trouble coming, which could be predator birds, and is often other hummingbirds, who are very territorial, and will fight over food sources. “The plastic flowers mean they have to reach farther in to get to the food, and it can obstruct their vision. Also, it’s another part for mold to grow

on,” he said. Make sure the feeders are clear, rather than colored glass. “Again, that’s something to attract humans, not hummingbirds. If you can see the water, you can tell right away if the food is clear or cloudy,” he said. Cloudy food is rancid food, and that’s another thing that will keep the birds away. “Check your feeder often. Keep it full, and keep it clear. Food won’t last five days at my house. When it starts to get cloudy, it’s going bad, then it becomes hummingbird repellent,” he said. Buy feeders that can be

washed thoroughly, he said, and wash them regularly. The best food is one part sugar to four parts water, and one part sugar to three parts water in winter, he said. “Don’t bother with red dye. We know it doesn’t do any good, and it’s possible it may cause harm, but either way, it’s unnecessary,” he said. Given the birds time to find it, he said, and be patient. Create a legend

Rolfs paid more this year to have her boots professionally resoled than she paid for the boots, she said, but they have sentimental value to Rolfs, and a story that has become part of Baby Ruthless lore. “The story with the boots is that they were infused with special powers to make you dance because they were made from the fabric of Eddie Murphy’s couch after Rick James ruined the couch with his own dancing shoes,” Rolfs said. The legend comes from a skit on the “Chappelle’s Show” called “Charlie Murphy’s Real Hollywood Stories.” Charlie Murphy, Eddie Murphy’s brother, tells stories of hanging out with his famous brother in Hollywood, and one story of the time Rick James smeared dirt from the bottoms of his shoes on Eddie Murphy’s new couch. A lot of the Babycakes legends are inside jokes of inside jokes — all in good fun, and spun from a web of funny things that bear a grain of truth and much elaboration on that truth.

Pick a parade

Don’t be afraid to go too small, Belle said. “The first parade we marched in was the Art Car Parade,” she laughed. Eventually, the buzz spread and they started marching in the Spanish Town Mardi Gras Parade. “We march rain or shine,” Harris said. “We were there in torrential rain one year, and my boots sloshed every time I took

Don’t forget support

Each Babycakes member needs someone out of uniform to provide crowd control, help with costume issues and hold her stuff. These designated helpers are called Men on March, or MOMs. But they aren’t always men. “My mom is my MOM, actually,” Rolfs said. “I think if we’ve learned anything, it’s that you have to keep moving forward,” Rolfs said. “No, literally. The dances have to be such that you move ahead, or you’ll hold up the whole parade, and you don’t want to be the dance group that holds up the parade.”

Maintain a bond

At the heart of the marching group is a group of friends. “We’re mostly Type A personalities,” Harris said, “though not all.” She points out that there are members of the group who are reliably and fashionably late for almost everything. But everyone brings her own brand of Babycakes magic to the table, and that’s what makes it work, Harris said. They also make an effort to stay in touch throughout the year at regular get-togethers. The women have made a commitment to walk the fine line between putting on a good show and having fun with it. “We practice — we want it to look good, but we don’t want it to be stressful,” Rolfs said.
