After being diagnosed, Cedotal said, he talked with a therapist but said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;She mostly talked to my mom instead of me, and it felt like I was invisible.â&#x20AC;? Everything changed for Cedotal when he started going to therapy sessions at Horses of Hope in Denham Springs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love it here; my anger issues I had, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s helping a lot,â&#x20AC;? Cedotal said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It helps control the stress and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a stress reliever.â&#x20AC;? Cedotalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mother, Rachel Araque, said she will be forever grateful to

Class learns basics, history of quilting process Many motivated by family memories

Special to The Advocate LIVINGSTON â&#x20AC;&#x201D; A group of quilting enthusiasts gathered at the Livingston Parish Library Thursday to learn about the age-old art of quilt making. The dozen women, led by Becky Guillot, president of the Livingston Parish Quilting Guild, received an overview of the history of quilt making and were introduced to the basics of the hobby. Class participants said they wanted to know more about quilting because making quilts brought back fond memories of their mothers, grandmothers, aunts and friends who made hand-crafted covers they remember fondly from their youth. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a pleasure to put together something as beautiful and useful as a quilt,â&#x20AC;? said Guillot, who is retired from LSU, where she worked in personnel. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Designing the quilt cover gives one a great deal of satisfaction, and when the quilt is finished, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a feeling of satisfaction and joy in knowing that a project has been completed.â&#x20AC;?

Seventh Ward School turns 100

cmarceneaux@theadvocate.com DENHAM SPRINGS â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Former students, some from the 1940s and 1950s, will have a chance to travel back in time Feb. 27 when they celebrate the 100th anniversary of Seventh Ward School, now an elementary school. The school, which still contains a part of the original structure completed for the 1915 school year and located in Ward 7 after the former Wardline School closed, was a single wooden structure with no cafeteria or indoor plumbing, said former teacher Charmaine Vernon. Now retired after 20 years at Sev-

enth Ward, Vernon spent more than a year interviewing former principals, staff members and students to gather material for the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history. The former students she interviewed recalled learning much more than reading, writing and arithmetic. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Teachers would arrive early, light the wood stove and make hot chocolate on cold winter mornings for students,â&#x20AC;? Vernon said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the beginning, the men of the community cut the trees to build the first lunch room in the parish,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It sat on wood blocks cut from trees. Students were responsible for cleaning the lunch tables,

sweeping the floor every day and mopping on Fridays. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The men of the community kept the firewood cut for the teachers and students,â&#x20AC;? she said. Despite the workload, the students were able to make regular visits to Clarence Joe Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Neal Jr.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s store, formerly on La. 16, which in the 1950s was a gravel road. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t buy jawbreakers,â&#x20AC;? Continued from page 1G teachers were available to the 94 students during the school’s first year, and 85 library books accommodated students in grades one through 10, she said. Vernon also learned from Frances Boyd, a former volunteer librarian who worked at the school in the 1990s, that during the Depression, Seventh Ward was one of the first places in the parish to offer a “soup kitchen.” “Boyd kept interesting items about the school in a simple box,” Vernon said. “Since she was designated as historian, she felt it was important, so she typed it up.” The school was a shelter for families during hurricanes Betsy and Camille, Vernon said. In 1981, school officials talked about closing the now iconic school; however, residents strongly urged school board members to keep it open, Vernon said. Many of the former students recalled May Day, which was held annually for more than 20 years. It featured a king, queen, a court, elaborate decorations and entertainment. Today, the school “really is

a community school,” Vernon said. “We have a sense of community,” Vernon said. “We have third and fourth generations attending the school.” The school is housed in a brick building, which was expanded each decade and contains 20 classrooms for 20 teachers and three teachers aides and their 350 students. The school boasts five school bus drivers, five cafeteria personnel, a secretary, two custodians, a principal and many parent volunteers, Vernon said. “Our library, which was reorganized in 1986, now houses more than 5,000 books” and other equipment such as laptop computers, Vernon said. Following lunch on Feb. 27, school officials will honor former teachers and principals with a presentation at 1 p.m. during which the school’s first principal, S.R. Lowe, will be memorialized. Later that day, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., there will be an open house for former students and parents, teacher and celebration organizer Laura Dunlap said. A tour of the school will include viewing of a 200-year-old oak tree that still shades the back of the school by the playground equipment.

Fifty-three 4-H members from the parish prepared 82 dishes and competed in six cookery contests for the opportunity to compete at the Area Cookery Contest. The first-place winner in the seafood, poultry, egg, beef and sugar divisions will compete in April at the Area Cookery Contest in Ponchatoula, a news release from LSUAgCenter said. Kimberly Knighten, of United Healthcare, held an educational program for the youth and had them design skits about healthy living, the release said. Dr. Health E. Nominations open for DSHS Athletic Hall of Fame Advocate staff report The Denham Springs High School Athletic Hall of Fame and its title sponsor, Sport-NCenter, will open nominations for the fifth class of inductees. Nominations for the class of 2015 will be accepted until March 31. “It’s hard to believe the Hall of Fame has come so far in such a short time,” said Kelly Jones, Denham Springs High School principal. “After we asked Butch Wax, Pee Way Day, Jim Spring and Robert Graves to form a steering committee, it just took off.

Once I decide the child is appropriate for the program, we take them around and introduce them to all the horses. Almost 95 percent or more of the time the horse will give me a cue that he’s ‘picking’ the kid.” Cedotal and the mare named Blue he works with have developed a special connection. “This was the first time in 25 years that Blue has ever ‘picked’ someone,” Bombet said.

“They developed solid nomination and selection ground rules that have protected the process from controversy and, in cooperation with the Denham Springs Athletic Association, we have ended each yearly cycle with a first-class induction banquet at Forrest Grove Plantation. We are the most proud of the widespread community support the Hall of Fame enjoys and also the integrity of the selection process that has earned the public’s trust.” Forty-three sports figures have been inducted, Spring said. One star athlete, former

Australian exchange student Katrina Hibbert, has been selected but not yet inducted due to scheduling and travel difficulties, he said. During the past four years, 33 athletes, eight coaches and two supporters have been enshrined. Two of these were inducted in the dual category of athletecoach. Anyone with an interest in Yellow Jacket athletics may submit a nomination; however, individuals may not nominate themselves, a news release from Springs said. Nominations must conform to the Hall of Fame nomination guidelines available at www.den-

Bombet’s partner, Carrie Parascandolo, said that in therapy, “They don’t always ride; a lot of what we do happens on the ground. A huge part of it is brushing the horse, feeding it and creating a connection between the horse and the client. Just the process of brushing is a very relaxing process, and it helps the kids open up when they’re physically doing something else.” Bombet was inspired to begin practicing equine therapy because “all I ever wanted to do was work with kids with behavioral problems. After church one day, we were having coffee and a lady told me about her therapy riding program. A light went off and I became driven to figure out how I could do that and do it as a nurse.” Although Bombet has been doing equine therapy for nearly 15 years, she met her partner, Parascandolo, about two years

ago at a seminar for equine therapy at LSU, and together they incorporated Horses of Hope shortly after meeting. “It’s just been a beautiful connection that God has put us together,” Parascandolo said. “We haven’t had the finances to do a lot, so we kind of had to take it slow.” “This is my dad’s property and he’s donating the lease to us,” Parascandolo said. “It’s not fancy and we don’t have the money to buy a really expensive barn, but that’s not what it’s about. God works through the horses regardless of how pretty the barn is.” Cedotal spent part of his session in the round pen training his horse to create what Parascandolo calls a “heart connection.” Cedotal did a series of activities in the round pen, which served to create this connection and allowed him to place an “invisible halter” on Blue and lead

her around the pen. “We tried other therapy but this is the one that worked,” Araque said. “We started coming here and it’s been a lifesaver.” For Bombet, the horses have been a symbol of hope that have gotten her through some rough times. “The name Horses of Hope really came because of the hope I never lost; because I was always able to keep my horses even during hard financial times,” Bombet said. Bombet believes the horses were not just meant for her to enjoy, though. “We believe that God works through the horse to help the child or the family heal,” she said. Livingston Chamber opens new building Advocate staff report The Livingston Parish Chamber of Commerce cut the ribbon on its new building last month. Business leaders, chamber members, the board of directors, stakeholders and public officials attended the event, according to a news release from the chamber. “It’s an enormous undertaking and we couldn’t be prouder to represent the business community in the parish as a whole through this venture,” Chamber CEO April Wehrs said.“The grounds and the

building are just beautiful and are a very welcoming and professional environment for business.” The chamber represents businesses of all sizes, the release said. “This has been part of the chamber strategic plan and to see it come to fruition is very rewarding,” Wehrs said. “I have been involved three years now and am proud to be on the board of directors of this great organization,” said chamber Chairman Wayne Dugas, of Lard Oil Co. “It’s a great day for businesses in Livingston Parish.”

Guillot said she has made quilts for her two children and for her three grandchildren and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re gifts that will last for a lifetime. Guillot told the quilting class that she learned to sew in high school in Plaucheville, a small rural community in Avoyelles Parish. Almost all residents of Plaucheville are descendents of the Acadian people exiled from their Eastern Canadian homes more than two centuries ago, she said. Quilt making was an essential chore in such rural communities, Guillot said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I want to learn how to quilt because my mother used to make quilts,â&#x20AC;? Suetta Burneysaid. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is something I always wanted to do, and I know that I will finish my first quilt with what I am now learning.â&#x20AC;? Sandra Richmond, of Walker, said she has just started quilting but wanted to learn more about the art. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My grandma quilted, and I am interested in keeping up the tradition. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve just retired and now I have time to learn how to quilt. I just didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the time before but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m here to learn.â&#x20AC;? Guillot led participants through the basics of quilting, and demonstrated different squares, or designs, that go into creating the top of the quilt. Squares can be cut and sewn in a variety of ways and she demonstrated, for example, how to make pinwheels, which are a common quilt motif.

Each participant was equipped with scissors, needles, thread, thimbles and rulers. She admonished them to make their stitches neat and flat so that there is no â&#x20AC;&#x153;bumpâ&#x20AC;? in the finished product. Guillot uses patterns from books which she said are available at three quilt shops that serve the Baton Rouge area. Quilts also need a backing and a center called batting, a layer of fiber that can be cotton, polyester, wool or other fibers. To complete the ensemble, the quilter lays the backing on a floor or very large table, places the batting over the backing, and then the top. Guillot showed participants how to pin the three layers together. Once the quilt â&#x20AC;&#x153;sandwichâ&#x20AC;? is assembled, the quilting stitching across the entire quilt begins, she said. Before modern sewing machines were available, this time-consuming stitching was done by hand, usually on a quilting frame, Guillot said, adding that her grandmother would stitch the quilts from a frame suspended from a ceiling. Quilting in rural America gave women time for fellow-

ship and probably much gossiping, she said. The quilting bee remains a staple of earlier, more carefree times, Guillot said. Guillot said she uses what is known as a longarm sewing machine to make the final stitching much easier than completing the task by hand. She said commercial firms offer stitching services and will complete the final stage of the quilt. Carefully choosing fabric for the top is critical, Guillot said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a fabric snob â&#x20AC;Ś and look for good, high quality fabric for my patters,â&#x20AC;? she said. Since the cost of fabric has risen considerably over the past several years, Guillot said a queen-sized quilt can cost as much as $400. Another cost, she said, are the gadgets a quilter has to assemble, such as special rulers for quilting. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget to get a ripper â&#x20AC;Ś no quilting kit is complete without a ripper. If you quilt, you will rip,â&#x20AC;? she said, laughing. Guillot said that estimating the value of a quality, wellsewn and designed quilt is difficult. The expense and hard work that goes into making a quilt is rewarding, Guillot said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It looks like quilting can be a lot of fun,â&#x20AC;? said Sarah Watson, a novice quilter who attended the class. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important is that it reminds me of my grandmother. We have pictures of us as kids cuddled up under quilts my grandma made. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important for me to continue this great tradition. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m determined to finish my first quilt.â&#x20AC;?
