Janice Hymel, of Denham Springs, started attending the shows years ago, although she couldn’t remember exactly when. “It’s like the shows in Branson,” the 74-year-old said. “It’s good entertainment, it’s the atmosphere — good wholesome hot dogs and popcorn.” Hymel, who attended Saturday night’s show, said she is still impressed with the amount of talented performers who grace the stage. “They have youth night in about two months and that is something to see,” Hymel said. Hymel said having the shows performed in the original building adds to the ambiance of the evening. “It’s a historical building,” Hymel said. “You’re right in the setting of a country show. It’s small, it’s compact.” Bob Forrest and his girlfriend, Rudy Grabert, also attended the Saturday show and have been going to the Old South Jamboree for about four years. “Branson, Missouri, has nothing on this,” Grabert said. Jones took over for Hodges about 10 years ago when he showed up to play for an audience of about 30 people. The 50year tradition was dying, Jones said. “After a few months, he (Hodges) asked me to run the show,” Jones said. “I told him, you can’t charge $10 a head and

Current, former SLU professors produce CD Advocate staff report

Several current and former members of the Southeastern Louisiana University music program have produced a CD of original music for saxophone with piano and electronic sounds, university officials said. The album “Embers” is named for the title piece, composed by Kari Besharse, lecturer of music, a news release from the university said. “The work combines facets of contemporary music with new technological resources, traditional instruments and ensembles,” said Besharse, who coordinated the production. As-

sisting in production were instructor Philip Schuessler and Richard A. Schwartz, previously with Southeastern and now with Eastern New Mexico University. “The synthetic sounds used in the album include electronic accompaniment, electronic sounds and live sounds from nature that all interplay,” Besharse said. The album is available through Centaur Records, one of the oldest and largest independent classical labels. Cover art was designed by Southeastern art instructor Ben Diller. Performers on the album include Schuessler and Schwartz and Southeastern professor and Grammy-nominated pianist

Kenneth Boulton. “We have a wide diversity of talent at Southeastern that allowed us to develop a jazzy-classical sound with lots of interplay using only a few instruments and synthetic sound,” Schuessler said. Tracks on the album include composer Ray Pizzi’s “Combat Zone” featuring Schwartz on alto saxophone; “Intervals I” by Schuessler with Schwartz on saxophone and Boulton on piano; “Angels,” composed by professor Stephen Suber, which recalls the memories of “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” with Schwartz and Boulton; Schuessler’s “Interruptions III” featuring Schwartz

on saxophone with electroacoustic music; Schuessler’s “Driftwood Box Puzzle” with Schwartz on saxophone and Schuessler on piano; and Besharse’s “Embers” featuring Schwartz and Schuessler.”“I was truly honored when Richard Schwartz wanted to include my composition “Angels” in the project,” Suber said. “This is an ideal situation for any composer — to have my composition performed and recorded by performers of the highest caliber, to have my piece played with loving attention to detail and accuracy, and to hear my work being brought to life almost as I imagined it would sound. I am thrilled with the result.”

HHMS Torbotics team to host robot reveal Advocate staff report

Matt Seguin is the Southeast District Junior Livestock Show king. The show was Feb. 2-6 in Covington.

Walker junior named Livestock Show king Advocate staff report Matt Seguin, 16, recently was named king of the 80th annual Southeast District Junior Livestock Show in Covington. Seguin, the son of Harold and Renette Seguin, is a resident of Pine Grove and a junior at Walker High School. “Family is very important to me, and I am lucky to have such a great family,” Seguin said. “They help me in many ways and are the reason I have achieved success in many areas.” Seguin is member of Walker High School’s 4-H and Future Farmers of America clubs and also is active in other school, church and family activities, a news release from the LSU AgCenter said. “I became involved in 4-H while I was in elementary school and am now in my eighth year as a member at Walker High School,” he said. “I am also a member of the Walker FFA chapter, where I have served as vice president for two years.” Seguin said his Christian faith also is important. He volunteers at his church as an usher and participates in the church youth group, the release said. Seguin stays busy with dairy and poultry projects, raising chickens and dairy heifers, the release said. “By taking care of my animals each day, I am learning how to one day take care of a family,” Seguin said. He now helps other students learn the basics of raising animals. “Many younger students now come to me for help with their projects,” he said. “Recently, I led a poultry workshop at our parish project training day, where I taught (them) about the different breeds and varieties of chickens.” He also taught other youths how to show chickens, how to leg band a chicken and general care-taking tips, the release said. Seguin said he will use the things he learned during that workshop to train the poultryjudging team he started at the Walker FFA two years ago. “As you can see, my poultry project is my passion,” Seguin said. “But I have also raised several dairy heifers over the years.” Local farmers also loan Seguin their heifers to show, and they’re his sole responsibility, the release said. “My grandpa grew up on a dairy farm, so learning about and raising dairy cows gives me an opportunity to spend time with and learn from him,” he said. “Being in 4-H and FFA has helped me to become a better person through the knowledge I have gained, also the leadership opportunities and community service projects.” Seguin was judged on his resume, livestock project, 4-H/ FFA activities, leadership and community service and an interview. Ken Guidry, LSU AgCenter agent in St. James Parish, said this year marked the 80th anniversary of the Southeast District Junior Livestock Show, which was Feb. 2-6 at the Livestock Show Facility on the St. Tammany Parish Fairgrounds in Covington.

Hammond High Magnet School Torbotics Team 2080 has begun the 2015 season and wants people to attend the robot reveal from noon to 2 p.m. Feb. 14 at HHMS, 45168 River Road. Students have been working on a new challenge called Recycle Rush, a news release from HHMS said. This year’s challenge is to build a robot that can pick up and stack trash bins as high as possible, the release said. Team members have been using recycled parts and materials to build the robot in hopes of winning this season’s upcoming competitions. HHMS Torbotics Team 2080 will take it on the road to Perry, Georgia, later this month to compete in the Georgia Southern Classic competition. Follow up competitions later in the season will be in New Orleans, and the students have big hopes to compete in the first World Championship again in St. Louis, the release said. “The mission of the Torbotics Team is to inspire students and communities to engage in science, technology, engineering and math by providing programs that expand their interest and knowledge in these

fields,” said Colin Gaydos, First Torbotics Competition member. Because of the rise in popularity of this program, Torbotics Team 2080 at HHMS has expanded this year and is made up of three levels of teams starting with a ninth-grade freshman team that learns initial engineering concepts in hopes of moving up to the 10th grade First Tech Challenge team that focuses on programming, the release said. Juniors and seniors work within the scope of the First Robotics Competition team and actually build the robots to use in the competitions. “This year looks to be our best year yet,” said Brody Stevens, senior chairman’s committee member. “The team is ahead of schedule on the robot build and is making final preparations for our Chairman’s presentation.” Catherine Cangelosi and Kyle Eleser, Chairman’s Committee members said another Chairman’s award in February will guarantee a bid to the World Championship and is a main goal of the committee, the release said. Information on the program and on the Torbotics Summer camps can be found at www. torbotics2080.org.
