The Rev. Charles Brown Sr., a member of the council, cited the former Wishing Well bar building on Lessard Street — which has been in major disrepair for years — as an example of such structures.
“The landowner next to this property is trying to fix up his property, but he can’t because this building is hovering over his land, Brown said. “I’d be upset if I was him. Councilman Emile Spano also expressed his frustration with the lack of action in having such structures removed, especially in his district. “I’ve been fighting this for eight years, Spano said. “The system we have in place doesn’t work. The LSU Agricultural Center’s Home Vegetable Gardening Symposium will be from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. March 5 at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center, 9039 St. Landry Road, Gonzales. Homeowners will learn more about growing vegetables in their home gardens, a news release said. Topics will include general vegetable production practices, insect identification and control, disease management techniques and information on raised bed vegetable gardening, including research being conducted on growing plants for raised beds. Attendees will view the outdoor demonstration gardens at Lamar-Dixon.
Art exhibit planned
The works of artist Merriann Hornsby will be display through February at the Ascension Parish Library’s Gonzales Branch, 708 S. Irma Blvd. Hornsby’s art chronicles the life of George West, also known as the River Preacher. West, a native of Ascension Parish, began preaching along the Mississippi River area in 1941. In his later years, he returned to the area and could be found, almost daily, at the ferry landing in Baton Rouge, in his long white robe and tall white cross and preaching the gospel. Hathron said smiling confidently. The 10-year-old, who attends Lowery Elementary School in Donaldsonville, planned to not only secure his spot in the Special Olympics Area Games, March 4-5 at Woodlawn High School in Baton Rouge, during the time trials, he planned to win all three of his scheduled events, adding that he’d probably place first or second. “Last year, I was first in long jump,â€? Construction is expected to start in March on River Parishes Community College’s $9.2 million Center for Advanced Technology. It will be the first project funded through Legislative Act 360, which was passed in 2013 and provides funding of more than $200 million for 28 workforce and technology training projects across the state. The technology center will sit directly behind River Parishes Community College’s Edenborne development campus in Gonzales, which opened its doors in May at its new location after a 10-year stint in Sorrento. Heavy rains forced officials with the Louisiana Community and Technical College and RPCC foundation boards to break ground Feb. 4 under a tent. RPCC Chancellor Dale Doty said architectural and construction companies interested in bidding on the project have until Thursday, Feb. 12, to submit qualifications and credentials. Then, in two weeks, five or six companies will be provided the opportunity to bid on the design build project. The contractor will be selected in March and dirt work on the site should begin immediately after the company is selected, Doty said. Doty said the industrial construction boom in the area is creating the need for more well-trained workers and the technical center will fill that void. However, he said, it was 32 area companies and residents that kicked in the remaining money needed to build the center. RPCC foundation board President Lilly Murphy said members of the foundation had äSee TECHNOLOGY, page 2G

around 45 days to raise the 12 percent needed to match the state funding. She praised area business and industry for “coming to the plate” to make the project happen. Murphy and several foundation board members waited in a line after the Feb. 4 ceremony to take their turn at gold shovels to turn dirt for the project. The narrow tented area made it impossible for everyone to line up at once for the ceremonial ground-breaking photo. Standing next to Murphy, foundation member Ryland Percy, who lead the fundraising team, said the new center will provide the space to train more workers for jobs in the River Parishes area. Percy said the new technology center will include open air welding bays and an industrial tower “just like the ones you see at a plant.” He said BASF donated the tower. Monty Sullivan, the president of the Louisiana community Technical College System, said the center will change the lives of students living in the area. He said training center graduates will be well-trained for jobs or to continue their education at area colleges and universities. Sullivan said breaking ground in 18 months since the Act 360 was passed “is nothing short of extraordinary.” He said lots of parishes wanted to be the first to build as part of the push for more technology education centers. The new center, which is expected to be open in a year,

He said the initial drawings for the 42,000-square-foot center were completed in January. The new center will replace the Sorrento campus, which sees about 350 students taking classes in process technology, instrumentation, drafting, welding and other job skills classes and more than 400 students attending adult education classes.
The new center will feature an operating chemical plant facility for process technology students that will allow them to “get a good idea of what it’s like to work in a plant and … work shift work.” He said RPCC will be able to customize training programs for business and industry in the River Parishes thanks to the added space the new center will provide. He said the college’s goal is to follow the students throughout their careers through entry-level training to courses offered to aid with advancement.

Gators even up district race with comeback victory
The St. Amant Gators boys knotted up the 5-5A district ASCENSION basketball race ATHLETICS with a scorching come-from-behind victory Friday at the Gold Dome, 53-50, handing the Catholic High Bears their first district loss. With the Gators trailing the Bears (18-6, 5-1) 44-34 late in the third quarter, Courtney Julian made string music, hitting a threepointer that started the Gators’ comeback. Julien led the way in a 10-0 run midway through the fourth quarter and along with Nick Griffin combined to make four straight free throws to lead the St. Amant rally and win. Julien hit two free throws with 14.7 seconds left that accounted for the final score, but St. Amant had to withstand one final attempt from Catholic. Toliver Freeman, who was the Bears’ leading scorer with 17 points, got a screen at the top of the key from Grant Scerlor but his three-pointer with five seconds to go was off the mark. St. Amant’s Crandell Christoff snatched the rebound and held the ball until the buzzer sounded, sending St. Amant’s bench and home crowd into a frenzy. Courtney Julien led the Gators with 20, Nick Griffin scored 12 and Christoff scored 11 points.

Gators bowl over opponents to win Coca-Cola Invitational
Winning the recent Coca-Cola Invitational Tournament in Baton Rouge, from left, are St. Amant bowlers Prentiss Stanley, Eric Konow, Jack Douglas, Blaycen Breaux, Brandon Ocmand and Christian Ocmand with coach Kyle Manton.
The St. Amant Gators’ boys bowling team won the Coca-Cola Invitational Tournament on Saturday in Baton Rouge at All Star Lanes. The squads bowled what are called Bakers’ games, wherein five bowlers bowl one frame each then repeat to finish the game. The team’s best five out of seven games score was 1088, and in the final game they bowled a 256 to defeat 17 other teams from around the state.

Tyler Teague, Teal Smith top team in Fishing for Tucker tournament Tyler Teague and Teal Smith worked the Atchafalaya Basin to catch a limit of five bass weighing 16.86 pounds to win the $2,500 first-place award in the recent fifth annual Fishing for Tucker Team Bass Tournament. The top team also caught a bass weighing 6.09 pounds to take top honors for big bass and a $500 prize. A mere 4/100ths of a pound separated second-place finishers Charles Major and Wayne Tucker from the winners. Their limit of five bass weighing 16.82 pounds that earned the team $1,100 was anchored by a 6-pound kicker, which was good for second-place big bass and $250. There were many records set on this beautiful day. A record number of 126 teams participated in the tournament. Sixty-nine of those teams brought a limit of five bass to the scales, and a whopping $22,546 was raised to help offset the costs of Tucker’s mitochondrial disorder. It took 13.77 pounds to crack the top 18 and earn a check and over 15 pounds to get in the top 10. The rest of the top 10 included:
