cfutch@theadvocate.com Growing lettuce is harder than Eden Guirard realized, the Episcopal fifth-grader said Feb. 5, standing in front of lush, green heads of varying sizes growing in a hydroponic system she and classmates Joshua Gregoire and Crawford Grigsby constructed. Their teacher, Sonny James, guided them as part of a fifthgrade science class project. A lot of things went wrong before they figured it out, Guirard said. But it was the successes that brought the students before
the Episcopal High student body Feb. 6, presenting their results in a presentation in the school’s Visual and Performing Arts Center. They took turns explaining the trial-and-error process of setting up the hydroponic system, feeding the plants with a liquid solution of nutrients and constantly monitoring the conditions of the system to make sure they fell within acceptable parameters. “We went out and read the temperature and pH and TDS (total dissolved solids in the nutrient mixture),� Grigsby said. “Only, one time, we had to
check TDS in the freezing cold, while it was raining,� Gregoire added. It was then that the fifthgrade class decided to ask for help from the senior honors thesis program, and the collaborative effort became part of the presentation. Seniors Monty Travis and Kendall Ravey devised and installed remote sensors to test for all the things the students had to test manually, along with wireless capability to send the data to a computer set up in James’ warm, dry classroom. More than 1,470 people volunteered with the international mission groups Children’s Cup and Feed My Starving Children to pack 272,160 meals to feed hungry African children during an ambitious “mobile packâ€? event Friday and Saturday at Healing Place Church. “We hit our goal,â€? reported Jim Brock, a volunteer coordinator for the Prairievillebased Children’s Cup, and a shipping container filled with the food, enough to feed 745 children for a year, will soon be on its way to southern Africa. The volunteers, from dozens of churches, schools, businesses and youth and civic groups, also donated $50,000 for the shipping, but an additional $12,000 is still needed, organizers said. Raised beds have a few advantages over traditional row gardens for smaller backyard spaces, Babin said, including
improved yield and drainage and easier access for garden maintenance if well planned. They also offer a good solution for areas with poor soil. Choosing the site is the top priority, Babin said. Over 550 Shenandoah students compete in academic events

Shenandoah Elementary School held its annual Jump Rope for Heart and Academic Olympics on Feb. 6. More than 550 students competed in academic events, a news release from the school said. The event was meant to foster a larger sense of community, and gave students a chance to meet other teachers and students, the release states. Activities included ice and salt sculptures, a Louisianathemed scavenger hunt, en-
gineering projects, a greaterthan-and-less-than bean bag toss, flying disc, the Internet Science Spin, Back-to-theBoard English, language arts and more, the release said. For 13 years, Shenandoah Elementary students have participated in Jump Rope for Heart, which benefits the American Heart Association. Students in pre-K through fifth grade took turns jumping rope for as long as possible, the release said. The students were encouraged to gather pledges from family and community members to raise money.

potential problems, and Babin advises beds be no more than 4 feet wide — but can be any length — so plants are easily accessible for maintenance and harvest. This allows for two adjacent 24-inch squares on each row. Extra-large plants like tomatoes will take up one entire 24-inch square; large plants can be planted every 12 inches, or two per square; medium plants need 4 to 6 inches per plant; and smaller crop seeds can be scattered over a square and thinned to every 3 inches. The spacing allows for air flow and room for the plant to grow to its most productive size. Another helpful consideration is how wide a pathway one needs between beds. Generally 1 to 2 feet is fine, but gardeners who use wheelchairs may need more room to maneuver. Measure and mark the area with stakes and remove the grass, put down weedblocking material and create the sides of the bed. Generally, 8 inches is enough room for most vegetable crops, he said, though they can be made as tall as necessary to create ease of use. This is especially
helpful to gardeners with mobility issues, he said. Pretty much any material can be used to construct a raised bed, he said — stacked lumps of broken concrete, concrete blocks and cross ties are all good options, he said, but he showed many examples of creative recycled solutions, including wine bottles, used tires and even a bed frame. Fill the bed with soil and organic material — composted cow manure is a favorite for Babin — and send a soil sample to the LSU Agricultural Center’s Soil Test and Plant Analysis Lab, Babin said, and amend the soil as instructed. Irrigation also is critical to a successful garden, he said, and raised-bed gardeners may want to look into options for irrigation systems that send water directly to the roots and decrease the amount of labor involved. Their periodic harvests — 36 heads of lettuce so far — supplement the Episcopal School salad bar. “That’s pretty impressive, to me,” James said. Guirard said she does not grow lettuce at home. “I’m mostly interested in hydroponic systems,” she said. The project was presented to the EHS student body as part of its Senior Launch Day, a relatively new event on campus that showcases the best work of senior students, said Scott Engholm, who has been teaching at Episcopal for seven years. While seniors have long presented their academic projects as part of the senior honors thesis program at the school, Engholm said, the students within the program decided to invite all disciplines, including performing and visual arts, athletics, and the entrepreneurship and engineering programs, to present their best work. The honors graduates of the class of 2014 wanted to emphasize all student achievement, both academic and extracurricular. But it did begin, Engholm said, with the honors thesis program, which sophomores

Those accepted into the honors program begin searching for an independent thesis project during their junior year and work up to the showcase on Launch Day during their senior year. It is totally student-driven, Engholm said, in every aspect from the research project selection to the planning and execution of the Launch Day, itself. The seniors who don’t opt to present a thesis project themselves organize and plan the event, which stretches across the campus, with groups of high school students divided
up into smaller groups that rotate locations every 20 minutes. This allows students to view more than one presentation over the two-day program. “We even have the juniors volunteer to run things on the day of so the seniors who planned the event can relax and enjoy everything,” he said. Head of Schools Hugh McIntosh said he is continually impressed by the ideas generated by students every year and said it comes from looking at students as individuals. “It’s the kind of personalized education we like to promote here,” he said.

Continued from page 1G good feelings the volunteers experienced — the story is about the children both here and over there. “I want to feed hungry children,” said Jéan Treas, 8, a member of a Healing Place team, as she weighed a 380gram bag holding a cup of rice, a cup of soy meal, a spoonful of powdered vitamins and a scoop of dried carrots and potato flakes. “We’re doing this to make sure no more kids are hungry in Africa,” said Renee Knighten, 10, a member of Girl Scout Troop 10055, as she scooped rice into a bag that, when cooked, will feed six children. “We need to show them how important it is to give back to the community,” added Scout mother Shata Chapman. The floor of the cavernous Healing Place arena was transformed into a food processing plant as volunteers, all wearing head nets, manned a dozen U-shaped tables in three, twohour shifts on Friday afternoon and evening and again in three, two-hour shifts on Saturday. The process of scooping and filling and heat-sealing the individual bags took the volunteers just a few minutes, and a 36bag box was quickly filled and carried to an awaiting pallet. “We were blown away” with the response, said Ben Rodg-
