Formally known as the West Ascension Parish Hospital Service District, the hospital collects a half-cent sales tax on the parish’s west bank. The hospital’s sales tax revenue rose nearly 70 percent between 2013 and 2014 from $1.3 million to $2.2 million. Jane Arboneaux, the hospital’s office manager, said this

month that the majority of the increase stems from the CF Industries expansion. The Mississippi River fertilizer complex is the world’s largest nitrogen plant and has been undergoing a $2.1 billion expansion since mid-2013, bringing as many as 2,500 temporary workers to the river community. Though the boost in sales tax revenue has provided a shot in the arm, patient revenues still comprise 70 percent of the

East Ascension High students learn about job opportunities at EMS Day BY DARLENE DENSTORFF

ddenstorff@theadvocate.com GEISMAR — East Ascension High School student Dena Lolley, 17, carefully stepped into a pair of firefighter’s boots Friday, leaning on a friend to make sure she didn’t fall. Lolley, who said she wants to be paramedic, was taking part in the fifth annual EMS Day for high school students from St. Amant, East Ascension and Dutchtown. Program organizer Ronnie Harper said the daylong program is designed to introduce students to a “wide array of job opportunities in the field of first responders.” Many students, he said, are interested in nursing but they don’t have any idea what types of nursing jobs are available. The program, moved from the Dutchtown High School parking lot to inside the gym due to rain, featured 10 stations from state and local agencies and an EMS team representing industry. In one corner of the gym, Lolley and a group of East Ascension students were learning about what it takes to be a firefighter and paramedic from members of the Prairieville Fire Department. Firefighters Kirby McGregor, Tim Geisler, Robert Musselman, Ray Poche and Jim Cooper talked about the equipment needed for fire and rescue calls. McGregor demonstrated how he can get into his fire gear in less than two minutes. It took Lolley about seven minutes to don the suit, helmet and other equipment. Representatives from Baton Rouge EMS, Acadian Ambulance, Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, Louisiana Fire Marshal’s Office and Louisiana National Guard talked about their jobs and the education needed for the professions. In addition to learning about career and education opportunities, the students learned

about safety. Representatives from Rubicon’s EMS team talked about rescues and safety at their Geismar facility. State Police Trooper Jared Sandifer talked to students about the dangers of drinking and driving. Students learned

lessons on what it’s like to drive impaired when they rode a tricycle while wearing special goggles that simulate a 0.07 to 0.1 blood alcohol level. “They get the chance to ask questions from people who do the jobs they are interested in,” said William Lelonde, who

teaches a first responder class at East Ascension. Lelonde praised Harper for his efforts in bringing the three schools together for the event. He said students attending the program were enrolled in the schools’ emergency medical responder classes.

Q: A:

INVESTMENTS

Will chasing “hot” investments improve my returns?

Investors tend to convince themselves that recent investment performance represents the future. The problem with chasing today's investment options is that by the time you hear about the latest “hot” performers, you may have already missed out on all or most of the opportunity to participate in the price appreciation. Chasing past winners can also lead to overtrading too often increasing the chance you'll buy high and sell low. One potential solution: work with a financial advisor. In fact, some have found that investors who work with a financial advisor tend to hold on to their investments longer and realize better returns than do-it-yourselfers.

AUTOMOTIVE TIRES, SERVIcES, & AccESSORIES

Q: A:

AT stands for all-terrain. These tires perform well in a variety of off-highway conditions and on the road. The tread pattern is designed so that the lugs are closer together making it more aggressive for tough terrains. The pattern also makes for a quieter ride on the streets. These tires are perfect for the driver who likes to jump off the road and be ready for anything! For your AT Tires visit Skid Marks Tire Pros, 5 locations to serve you better in the Baton Rouge area!

Q: What is the best mattress for me? A:

Today there are many choices. Traditional innerspring still leads the pack and continues to offer great value and reasonable prices. Hybrid series which is a traditional innerspring mattress base with a heavy layer of memory foam on top has become popular. The next step us is full memory foam with a wide price range, some offer body sensing temperature gel. High quality air mattress are a small part of the business, but do have many fans. While cheap mattress are just that and offer limited comfort and life, medium priced mattress sets are still great value and consumers do not have to spend a fortune for a good night's sleep.

for my kid?

Like a lot of things in sports, a major part of hitting is having the right mental attitude. If your kid likes the look and feel of a certain bat, they have a better chance of hitting with it. The technology in bats only comes into play for a small percentage of the elite kids, and if you have that kid, then look to get the best. If not, any price point will probably work out fine. Remember though, that the kid needs to really like the bat first and foremost.

community Deadline nears for two Sheriff’s Office grants Advocate staff report April 1 is the deadline to apply for two grants through the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Jeff Wiley said Ascension Parish students can apply for the Louisiana Sheriffs’ Scholarship Program and the Dawn Shivers Memorial Scholarship fund. The Louisiana Sheriffs’ Scholarship Program will award scholarships providing assistance to worthy Louisiana students in furthering their education and training with resources made available through the Louisiana Sheriffs’ Honorary Membership Program, Wiley said in a news release. Wiley will award a $1,000 scholarship to the recipient and a $500 scholarship to an alternate for the 2014-2015 school year. Winners will be announced in May. “Louisiana sheriffs are pleased with the program’s ability to bring scholarships to Louisiana students bound for higher education. To continue

to do so, and fund other important projects and initiatives, continued support of the honorary membership program is essential,” Wiley said. Wiley established a scholarship fund for graduating high school seniors in honor of Dawn Shivers, a retired employee of the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office who died in May 2013 after fighting a long battle with cancer. This year will be the second year for the scholarship fund. “The purpose of the Dawn Shivers Memorial Scholarship fund is to honor her sweet spirit and continue her legacy as a vessel through Christ, and to also encourage others who may be fighting the same cancer battles to keep pushing and stay strong,” Wiley said. Applications are being provided to area high schools and also can be obtained from the Sheriff’s Office in Donaldsonville and Gonzales. Those investments helped upgrade the hospital, meaning it was entitled to a better reimbursement. As part of the program, teacher leaders guide weekly professional development and provide individual coaching in classrooms. Evaluations of teacher’s practices are followed by feedback and support. A performance-based compensation system rewards educators for adding skills and student development. “Because of TAP, I have been able to create a pipeline of leaders that can support other teachers and students on campus,” Meyers said. Meyers said she knew the school would be highlighted at the conference because a TAP film crew followed her around for three days in February, “but I had no idea we were going to win $50,000.” The experience “has been a bit overwhelming” for Meyers, who

She credited her staff for dedicating hours to planning and implementing strategies designed to improve student performance. “We haven’t really celebrated with the students and staff, but we will,” she said Monday. She’s had little time to decide how to spend the money but she has some ideas. At the top of her list is the need for additional technology

at her school, which has about 570 students in prekindergarten through fifth grade. She’s also thinking about using some of the money to hire an additional mentor teacher for the program. The Ascension Parish School Board provides $5,000 teacher stipends for four mentor teachers and Meyers said an additional mentor teacher would help provide more support to teachers and students. The Pecan Grove delegation demonstrated one of its TAP meetings at the conference, and other Ascension Parish Schools were highlighted in workshops

It wasn’t the first time Ascension Parish schools have been honored at the conference. Two years ago, Meyers said, the parish system was named a district of distinction for its efforts to use the TAP program to improve student achievement. In 2011, Lowery Intermediate School in Donaldsonville was

recognized for the school’s progress using a national pay-for-performance school reform model. Lowery was one of three schools in the nation to receive the TAP Ambassador award in 2011. At the Friday and Saturday conference, Superintendent Patrice Pujol was part of a panel discussion on the program. Teachers from each of the par-

ish’s TAP schools attended the conference, Pujol said. Pujol said TAP has created a system of collaboration and support for teachers that then provides support for students. She said that in addition to aiding learning at the 10 TAP schools, non-TAP schools use successful strategies “that help our kids every day.”

schools School Board OKs buying tract by Dutchtown High BY ELLYN COUVILLION

ecouvillion@theadvocate.com GONZALES — The Ascension Parish School Board on Tuesday approved the $200,100 purchase of a 6-acre tract off La. 74 near Dutchtown High School, with an eye to one day building a road that will provide another access route to the Geismar school, which now has its sole entrance and exit on La. 73. In the meantime, the property will provide field space for student athletics, as well as spillover parking for games, said Chad Lynch, planning and construction director for the

school district. In answer to board member Shawn Sevario’s question about the timeline for a possible road through the property from the school campus to La. 44, Superintendent Patrice Pujol said a funding source for the road hasn’t yet been identified. Once funding is secured, it should take about six months for the road to be built, Lynch said, with about three months for the design phase and another three months for construction. Also on Tuesday, the board gave the go-ahead to cooperative agreements with two other

government agencies: n The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office for its use of a building on the former campus of West Ascension Elementary School on St. Patrick Street in Donaldsonville as a satellite location of the Sheriff’s Office. The elementary school site has been closed for more than 10 years. n The 23rd Judicial District Court to house the Families in Need of Services program in a building on the former campus of G.W. Carver Primary School in Gonzales. The primary school moved to a new site last year.

Lots of action on diamond at shootout Lots of action took place at the Jay Patterson Shootout this weekend that highlighted area teams. The action was almost nonstop as baseball teams from all over the state took part. Games were played in Gonzales and St. Amant. The action took off with Dutchtown taking on Shaw in the opener at St. Amant. The Griffins lost 10-4. The Brother Martin Crusaders took a close game, 4-3, from Destrehan at Spartan field in that site’s opener. The Jesuit Blue Jays played the Gators in the nightcap. The game went back and forth as Tyler Dixon hit an RBI double in the third to pull the Gators within two as the inning ended 4-2. A solo home run by Adam Sevario and a 3-run homer by Brock Owen gave the Gators a 6-4 lead at the end of five. Brock Gonzales hit a single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give St. Amant an 8-7 victory. Archbishop Rummel took a 6-5 victory from the Spartans in a nail-biter to close out day one at East Ascension stadium. The Spartans took on Brother Martin on day two and lost 6-3 in the opener, while Shaw handed St. Amant a 16-0 shellacking at Gator field in the morning game there.

In day two at Spartan field, the Griffins lost to the Crusaders 8-1, while Destrehan shut out Shaw at Gator field 2-0. The Griffins took the field again and lost 11-1 to the Blue Jays, while Rummel overcame a 9-0 deficit to beat Destrehan by the score of 20-17 at St. Amant. In their second game of day two in Gonzales, the Spartans took on Jesuit. Charles Stevens hit a 2-run double to tie the game 4-4 at the end of the first inning. The Spartans took the lead 5-4 in the second and added another run to make it 6-4 at the bottom of the third inning. A 6-run fifth inning gave the Spartans a 12-7 lead, and EA held on to take the game 12-10. St. Amant defeated Rummel 8-1 at Gator field. The Gators ended the game with a 6-4-3 double play. In day three of the Shootout at Spartan field, Dutchtown took on Rummel. At the end of three innings, Rummel held

a 4-1 advantage. The Griffins hit the comeback trail as they tightened the game to 4-3 at the end of five innings. A 2-run double by Nick Ourso in the sixth inning gave the Griffins a 5-4 lead, and they added a run in the seventh inning to take a 6-4 victory. The Griffins ended up with a 1-3 weekend. In the finale, EA took on Shaw in what started off as a pitchers’ duel. They were scoreless through four innings. That’s when Kade Waguespack hit a sacrifice fly to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead that they never gave up. East Ascension took the game 5-2 and ended the weekend at 2-2. The finale at Gator field had St. Amant taking on Brother Martin, and the Gators wasted no time as they took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning on a three-run homer by Justin Duhon. Things went downhill after that as the Gators lost to the Crusaders 18-9 and finished the weekend with a 2-2 record. There were some positives this weekend as our parish teams were able to get ready for district play on the diamond.

Spring is in the air

It seems like overnight the woods have gone from wintertime gray to spring green; a

pleasant change from the last few weeks of Old Man Winter hanging on as long as he could. The birds are out in full array as they start to conduct their mating rituals, and their songs seem to have some extra cheer to them. This weekend, humans seemed to have taken on their spring attitudes, as well. After a couple of weeks of what I would call “fonky” weather, the sun came out and the temperature warmed up nicely. That had us stirring around a lot: Folks took on yard work and the highways filled to capacity with some heading to the nearest place of business where lawn and garden supplies were available. Some of the folks were heading to La. 30 to take part in what has become one of the premier activities around our area. The Louisiana Sportsman Show has become one of the great events at Lamar-Dixon Expo Center that mark the beginning of spring. The break in the weather on Saturday saw over-capacity crowds filing in organized chaos past each booth to see what the vendors had to offer at show prices. One would think that hunting and fishing would be all there was to see, but would be mistaken.

Advocate photo by LYLE JOHNSON

The Louisiana Sportsman Show at Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales was well-attended as the clouds parted and temperatures warmed up. There was available for purchase every type of gizmo and gadget needed to make your life better, from new-fangled propane burners for crawfish boiling, self-priming siphon hoses (of which I bought a couple) to just about anything you could think of and many you never would have thought of. Some of my favorite booths to visit were the spices and pre-mixed meals that were offered, and the samples were a nice touch. If you planned

things just right, an appetite could be filled without having to spend any money on food for those on a tight budget. Spring has arrived, so it’s time to get busy for the things you like to enjoy when the forces of winter have been broken. Lyle Johnson covers sports for The Ascension Advocate.
