YMCA promotes diabetes awareness Tuesday is American Diabetes Association Alert Day and the YMCA of the Capital Area wants area residents to know their risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, as well as preventive steps to reduce the chances of developing the disease, a news release said. The YMCA encourages anyone who wants to lose 7 percent of their body weight to take the online risk assessment at www.ymcabr. org/dpp on March 24 and 25. All participants who complete the online risk assessment will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win three prizes valued at $150 including a Fit Bit, 3-month family membership to the Y and a $50 gas card. New buddies bond at field day 6th-graders pair with pre-K students for service project

BY C. J. FUTCH

cfutch@theadvocate.com Sixth-grader Andrew Granger and his classmates at Parkview Baptist joked March 6 with a group of kindergartners from Gardere Community Christian School while they ate lunch on campus. They were fueling up for the next round in what had already been a day full of fun and games for the GCCS students, ranging from prekindergartners to seventh-graders, said Paige White, as Parkview hosted a field day for the new school on its campus. Granger, like most of the Parkview sixth-grade class, was

paired with a “little buddy for the day, acting as a guide and playmate through several stations that included field day games on the football field, inflatable bouncy houses in the gym and a worship service in the auditorium. The field day was part of the Parkview students’ day of service project this year, Principal Joana Dieterich said. “We do a service component as part of every school year, she said. “A good service project is hard to find for sixth-graders because not everyone can accommodate 113 sixth-graders, she said, laughing. Jeff More, a former teacher at Parkview who started teaching at

GCCS when it opened this year, told his former colleagues at Parkview how much his students could use a day of fun, he said. It turned out to be a perfect match, Dieterich said. “Since we have the facilities, we decided to just bring the students here.â€? More agreed, adding that the missions of both schools are wellmatched — the inclusion of faith in the education process and a commitment to see every student get into college. “It makes sense that the two schools should build a partnership,â€? he said. äSee BUDDIES, page 4G

Amanda Owens paints at the One Stop Drop In Center in Mid City.

Darrell Blanks and Amanda Owens paint for different reasons. Blanks’ art eases physical pain — he is diabetic and has arthritis in his spine. “Painting relaxes me, which helps with the pain, he said. Owens paints to work things out in her mind. She lives with posttraumatic stress disorder, she said, and painting allows her the chance to back away from the mental noise that sometimes overwhelms her, to organize her thoughts, and make sense of the world around her. “It’s an escape for me, she said. “I work things out in my head when I’m painting, almost without realizing it.

“FLAVOR SAYS IT ALL”

When you think of Louisiana, you think of flavor. When you think of flavor, you always think of Manda Fine Meats! Pineapple Glazed Ham

Ingredients:

Manda Honey Ham or Chef Master Honey Ham 24 oz Pineapple Juice 1 cup Brown Sugar 1 tbs Soy Sauce 1 tbs Lemon Juice 2 tsp Ground Cloves Sliced Pineapples (for garnishing)

Mix the pineapple juice, brown sugar, soy sauce, lemon juice, and cloves in a saucepan and boil until the mixture is reduced by half. The mixture should be like a syrup, if it is not thick enough, continue reducing until you reach a consistency of syrup. Lay the ham in a baking dish and spread the pineapple mixture over the ham. Cover the ham with aluminum foil and bake at 300º for 3 hours (1½ hours for a half ham). After 3 hours, lay some sliced pineapples on top of the ham and continue baking for another 30 minutes.

Runnels students place second in essay contest Advocate staff report Runnels Junior High School students Caroline Henning and Anna Claire Pousson won second place in the 2014-15 Bishop Stanley J. Ott Knights of Columbus Patriotic Essay A n n a C l a i r e Contest, school officials said. The contest drew more than 275 submissions from public

and private schools in the Baton Rouge area. This marks the sixth consecutive year that junior high students from Runnels have placed among the top three finishers in the annual writing contest, a news release said. The theme, C a r o l i n e “How Do You Show Your Patriotism for Your Country?” proved a meaningful

one to Anna Claire and Caroline. “In my essay,” Caroline said, “I explained how some people show patriotism by shooting off fireworks or cheering for Olympic teams, but for kids my age, it’s sometimes hard to show patriotism. For me, it’s feeling thankful for the freedoms we have in America.” Anna Claire said the focus of her essay was giving back to members of the armed forces in the community with kindness in small ways. “Small

deeds — like opening a door for a disabled veteran — can be more important than big deeds,” she said. Caroline and Anna Claire wrote their essays as an assignment in English, and teacher Kylie Harbin submitted them, along with those of their classmates, to the contest. At a Knights of Columbus Essay Contest recognition banquet on March 21, Caroline and Anna Claire will receive plaques and cash awards in the amount of $100 each.

Advocate staff report Mason Schapp, seventh-grader at Parkview Baptist School, took over for middle school Principal Joana Dieterich on March 6. Schapp said the dullest part of the job was payroll, and his favorite part of the day was helping set up for the sixthgraders’ day of service, in which Parkview sixth-graders played field day games with students visiting campus from Gardere Community Christian School. Dieterich said Schapp helped with a discipline issue and had to review the budget to explain to teachers why they couldn’t have a raise, he said. “It’s really hard to read some Advocate photo by C.J. ART

Continued from page 1G the exhibit will take place. But what makes the accomplishment even more remarkable is the obstacles Blanks and Owens must overcome just to get to the studio, said Elizabeth Whitley, who hosts a weekly painting session at their “studio,” which is really just a community meeting room at the One Stop Drop In Center, run by the Capital Area Alliance For the Homeless in Mid City. The homeless artists who use the sessions to paint take turns setting up before and cleaning up after the sessions. The sessions are well-attended, she said, with a core group of about 5 to 10 painters and sculptors of differing skill levels, and almost all are either homeless or on the edge of homelessness. Blanks lives camping out where he can, and Owens, who just found an apartment, was also camping outside a couple of weeks ago. “People have no idea how fast they can find themselves in our situation,” Owens said. “Everybody has their own reason for being here.” The six artists seated around the table on March 11 all nod, adding to the chorus of stories they’ve heard, or lived. People have gotten laid off suddenly, gotten sick, had a loved one get sick or die — the list goes on. Once you’ve lost your address, everything else becomes more difficult — getting medicine,

Continued from page 1G The students had some hand in designing the field day, said Paige White, who, along with Jonathan White, coordinated the joint venture from Parkview’s end. “They have been so excited,” she said. “We talked to our students beforehand and let them know that they should let their buddy decide what games to play.” Granger and his buddy

beside each piece. The work styles differ as greatly as the stories the artists tell, and Whitley said she loves walking into the space. Blanks, who has never had any formal art training, said his first sketch was of a lamb. “I was real young. I saw this lost lamb (in a drawing), and I didn’t want the lamb to be lonely, so I drew another one,” he said. He likes to get lost in his paintings, he said, adding detail until it feels done. Owens had always drawn, but she hadn’t tried painting until 2010. “I never thought I had a talent for it,” she said, laughing. When a hard thump to the table made everyone pull paintloaded brushes back from their canvases with a gasp, they took it in stride. “That’s what I love about working in paint. It doesn’t matter. If you mess up, you just paint over it and start over. It’s aggravating, but it’s nothing you can’t fix,” she said. While several of the artists in the group have been featured in the National Alliance on Mental Illness art show in Baton Rouge, which promotes awareness about mental illness, Whitley said, she hopes their inclusion in the juried art show at Burden will spark more interest in the work being produced at the center. To see more examples of the artwork created at the One Stop, visit the alliance’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ onestopartists.

#itsnotaboutme. They’ve been encouraging its use on social media to get students thinking about ways to give of themselves. The day also included a lunch spread for Gardere teachers provided by the parent-teacher organization, which Dieterich said, is part of the service their parents provide for teachers once a month. It is always highly anticipated, she said. Parkview students divided up into teams that were re-

sponsible for setting up games, serving concessions and cleaning up in addition to acting as buddies for the day. The school also held a school supply drive for the next class of GCCS students. More said he and White hope to keep the tradition going and collaborate on projects. “For the first year, we wanted to give them time to get to know each other. I’m very excited about the possibility of deepening that relationship.”

played a lot of games that involved racing. “He really likes to run, so we’ve been doing a lot of running,” he said. Granger said he was surprised to realize that a day of serving others doesn’t have to feel like work. “This has been fun.” The project supports an idea the school has been promoting this year, White said, about turning their focus away from self and toward others. The campaign, “My Selfie-less Life,” has been all about listening to the needs of others. It’s on the T-shirts they’re wearing, along with the hashtag

BREC plans golf league for junior participants Advocate staff report

First lady Supriya Jindal reads March 10 to students at Merrydale Elementary School. Jindal visited the school to announce that the foundation, with bronze partner, Entergy Louisiana, had awarded one ActivTable for the kindergarten classrooms and 15 tablets for the first-grade classrooms at Merrydale Elementary School.

BREC’s golf department is bringing the PGA Junior League Program, golf’s version of Little League, to the Baton Rouge area, BREC officials said. BREC will host the following Junior League information and registration meetings: from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. April 7 at Webb Memorial Golf Course, and April 9 at City Park Golf Course, a news release said. The Junior Golf League program includes junior boys and girls, ages 13 and under. BREC’s leagues will consist of four to six teams with eight to 11 players per team. Team competitions square off in a series of nine-hole matches. The matches are then broken down into threehole “flags,” played in a scramble format, the release said. BREC will refine the traditional PGA league format by having two divisions: a developmental league for newer players, and a more advanced league, known as the competitive division, comprised of

more experienced players. The advanced league will utilize both scramble and best ball formats in their matches. Competitive league play begins May 28, with developmental league play following on June 2. The season runs through mid-July when both teams play in local championships. State and regional competition will occur between allstar teams from various Louisiana cities, with the possibility of BREC’s team qualifying for the national championship in the fall. PGA professional Jack Terry, BREC’s player development manager, will coordinate and supervise the league. Teams will wear uniforms with numbers, hold practices like other team sports and participate in scheduled matches. Teams play from designated tees based on their skill level. Just as in other junior team sports, Junior League golfers will be coached by volunteer parents, and onlookers are invited to attend. For information, call Terry at (225) 272-9200, ext. 366, or visit golf.brec.org.

drick Martin, state director for the program. This is the 53rd year the program has been operating, he said. In fact, Eddrick Martin was a senator 20 years ago when he was a student at Southern University Lab School. Program participation depends on each school, Eddrick Martin said. Schools can send as many students as they can manage to see the process in action, he said. At the club level, Youth Legislature programs across the state give students the tools they need to learn and practice both government functions and parliamentary procedure, but to be elected to office, students must present an original bill for vote. There are also judicial and international components to the program, he said. Current Governor Folasade Lapite, a Neville High School senior from Monroe, started her involvement in the program through debate club at Head & THroaT Colds Pink Eye Sinus Infections Migraines/Headache Strep Throat Ear Infections

her school and served as a legislator her first year, then later served as a Supreme Court justice. One day, she hopes to study medicine and perhaps use that knowledge to work on global health policies, she said. State officeholders meet once a month in Baton Rouge, Eddrick Martin said, and participate in planning the conferences. “They do most of the work, I just offer guidance,” he said. Meanwhile, Maxwell Martin said the skills he has learned at the conferences will help him no matter what career he chooses. Researching the bills, he said,

made him more aware of issues affecting the people in his state. His first year as a youth legislator, Maxwell Martin introduced an equal pay for women bill, and saw it through to passage. “It won best bill in the house, so I’m really proud of that,” he said. Last school year, Martin helped a team that created the Heroes at Home bill, a measure that would provide housing and job assistance to returning military veterans if needed as a means of transitioning back to civilian life. That, he said, won best bill in the Senate that year. For the December session, Martin expanded his knowl-
